We study the ground-state properties of the double-chain Hubbard model coupled with ferromagnetic exchange interaction by using the weak-coupling theory, density-matrix renormalization group technique, and Lanczos exact-diagonalization method. We determine the ground-state phase diagram in the parameter space of the ferromagnetic exchange interaction and band filling. We find that, in high electron density regime, the spin gap opens and the spin-singlet $d_{xy}$-wave-like pairing correlation is most dominant, whereas in low electron density regime, the fully-polarized ferromagnetic state is stabilized where the spin-triplet $p_{y}$-wave-like pairing correlation is most dominant.
Possibility of superconductivity from electron repulsion in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice, which has a spin gap at half filling, is explored with the repulsive Hubbard model in the fluctuation-exchange approximation. We find that, while superconductivity is not favored around the half-filling, superconductivity is favored around the quarter-filling. Our results suggest that the Fermi surface nesting is more important than the spin dimerization for superconductivity.
After receiving a number of comments and reviews from our colleagues who have suggested that our results could be greatly improved by other methods of extrapolation, we have decided to withdraw our paper entitled "Absence of superconductivity in the 2D Hubbard model" until we can perform these calculations.
We reexamine the possibility of d-wave superconductivity in the hole-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model. In terms of the gauge field description of the spin fluctuations, we show that d-wave superconductivity is unstable in the perturbative region with respect to the on-site Coulomb repulsion, U. Whereas in the region where d-wave superconductivity is possible, there is a strong constraint on the gap of superconductivity. Analysis of the localized spin moments suggests that there is another d-wave (d_{x^2-y^2}-wave) pairing due to the short-range antiferromagnetic correlation.
We analyze the competition of magnetism and superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with a moderate interaction strength, including the possibility of incommensurate spiral magnetic order. Using an unbiased renormalization group approach, we compute magnetic and superconducting order parameters in the ground state. In addition to previously established regions of Neel order coexisting with d-wave superconductivity, the calculations reveal further coexistence regions where superconductivity is accompanied by incommensurate magnetic order.
We report exact calculations of magnetic and superconducting pair-pair correlations for the half-filled band Hubbard model on an anisotropic triangular lattice. Our results for the magnetic phases are similar to those obtained with other techniques. The superconducting pair-pair correlations at distances beyond nearest neighbor decrease monotonically with increasing Hubbard interaction U for all anisotropy, indicating the absence of frustration-driven superconductivity within the model.
We study the effect of buckling and breathing phonons, relevant for cuprate superconductors, on the d-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model by employing dynamical cluster Monte Carlo calculations. The interplay of electronic correlations and the electron-phonon interaction produces two competing effects, an enhancement of the effective d-wave pairing interaction, which favors d-wave superconductivity, and a strong renormalization of the single-particle propagator, which suppress superconductivity. Due to the later effect we find that buckling and breathing phonons suppres…
We propose theoretically that a magnetic field can realize spin-triplet superconductivity in repulsively interacting electron systems having strong ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. We confirm the general idea for the low-density Hubbard model on a triangular lattice, whose Fermi surface consists of disconnected pieces, by calculating the pairing susceptibility in a moderate magnetic field with the quantum Monte-Carlo method combined with the dynamical cluster approximation.
In order to clarify whether the odd-frequency superconductivity can be realized or not, we study a quasi-one-dimensional triangular lattice in the Hubbard model using the random phase approximation (RPA) and the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation. We find that odd-frequency spin-singlet p-wave pairing can be enhanced on a quasi-one-dimensional isosceles triangular lattice.
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional Hubbard model based on the optimization variational Monte Carlo method. We use a wave function that is an off-diagonal type given as $ψ=\exp(-λK)P_Gψ_0$, where $ψ_0$ is a one-particle state, $P_G$ is the Gutzwiller operator, $K$ is the kinetic operator, and $λ$ is a variational parameter. The many-body effect plays an important role as an origin of spin correlation and superconductivity in correlated electron systems. We examine the competition between the antiferromagnetic state and superconducting state by varying the Coulo…
We review magnetic and superconducting instabilities in the t-t' Hubbard model on the two-dimensional square lattice as obtained with functional one-loop renormalization group techniques. Special emphasis is put on ferromagnetic and triplet superconducting tendencies that could be relevant to the triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4.
Using a recently developed renormalization group method for fermionic superfluids, we determine conditions for d-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model at moderate interaction strength, and we compute the pairing gap in the superconducting regime. A pairing instability signaled by a divergent flow in the Cooper channel leads to a superconducting state in all studied cases. The next-to-nearest neighbor hopping $t'$ plays a crucial role in the competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. A sizable $t'$ is necessary to obtain a sizable pairing gap.
The Hubbard model with local on-site repulsion is generally thought to possess a superconducting ground-state for appropriate parameters, but the effects of more realistic long-range Coulomb interactions have not been studied extensively. We study the influence of these interactions on superconductivity by including nearest and next-nearest neighbor extended Hubbard interactions in addition to the usual on-site terms. Utilizing numerical exact diagonalization, we analyze the signatures of superconductivity in the ground states through the fidelity metric of quantum information theory. We find …
A variational Monte Carlo calculation is used for studying the ground state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model, including hopping between both nearest and next-nearest neighbor sites. Superconductivity with d-wave symmetry is found to be restricted to densities where the Fermi surface crosses the magnetic zone boundary. The condensate energy is much larger for hole doping than for electron doping. Superconductivity is kinetic energy driven for hole doping, but potential energy driven for electron doping. Our findings agree surprisingly well with experimental data for layered cuprates, both f…
The Roth's two-pole approximation has been used by the present authors to investigate the role of $d-p$ hybridization in the superconducting properties of an extended $d-p$ Hubbard model. Superconductivity with singlet $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing is treated by following Beenen and Edwards formalism. In this work, the Coulomb interaction, the temperature and the superconductivity have been considered in the calculation of some relevant correlation functions present in the Roth's band shift. The behavior of the order parameter associated with temperature, hybridization, Coulomb interaction and th…
We apply a renormalization group approach to the determination of the phase diagram of the t-t' Hubbard model at the Van Hove filling, as function of t'/t, for small values of U/t. The model presents ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting phases. Antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity arise from the same interactions, and compete in the same region of parameter space.
The CuO-planes of high-T_c superconductors were found to consist of geometric stripes with alternating superconducting and antiferromagnetic areas. Here we will investigate the repulsive Hubbard model of striped clusters as a possible microscopic description of the superconducting elements. The focus of our attention lies on the superconducting properties. We report in agreement with the square Hubbard model a signal in the d-wave channel and investigate its dependence on system size, cluster shape and interaction strength.
The two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model has been investigated by a variety of methods, from small to large U. Superconductivity with d-wave symmetry is consistently found close to half filling. After a brief review of the various methods a variational many-electron state is discussed in more detail. This trial state is a natural extension of the Gutzwiller ansatz and provides a substantial improvement thereof.
The density-matrix renormalization group method is used to study the ground state of the two-chain zigzag-bond Hubbard model at quarter filling. We show that, with a proper choice of the signs of hopping integrals, the ring exchange mechanism yields ferromagnetic spin correlations between interchain neighboring sites, and produces the attractive interaction between electrons as well as the long-range pair correlations in the spin-triplet channel, thereby leading the system to triplet superconductivity. We argue that this novel mechanism may have possible relevance to observed superconductivity…
We present a theoretical study of superconductivity of polarons in the Hubbard-Holstein model. A residual kinematic interaction proportional to the square of the polaron hopping energy between polarons and phonons provides a pairing field for the polarons. We find that superconducting instability in the d-wave channel is possible with small transition temperatures which is maximum in the large to small polaron cross-over region. An s-wave instability is found to be not possible when the effective on-site interaction between polarons is repulsive.
We present a stability analysis of the 2D t-t' Hubbard model on a square lattice for t' = -t/6. We find possible phases of the model (d-wave Pomeranchuk and superconducting states, band splitting, singlet and triplet flux phases), and study the interplay of them.
We discuss the possibility of spin-triplet superconductivity in a two-dimensional Hubbard model on a triangular lattice within the third-order perturbation theory. When we vary the symmetry in the dispersion of the bare energy band from D_2 to D_6, spin-singlet superconductivity in the D_2-symmetric system is suppressed and we obtain spin-triplet superconductivity in near the D_6-symmetric system. In this case, it is found that the vertex terms, which are not included in the interaction mediated by the spin fluctuation, are essential for realizing the spin-triplet pairing. We point out the pos…
We present a systematic stability analysis for the two-dimensional Hubbard model, which is based on a new renormalization group method for interacting Fermi systems. The flow of effective interactions and susceptibilities confirms the expected existence of a d-wave pairing instability driven by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. More unexpectedly, we find that strong forward scattering interactions develop which may lead to a Pomeranchuk instability breaking the tetragonal symmetry of the Fermi surface.
The cluster size dependence of superconductivity in the conventional two-dimensional Hubbard model, commonly believed to describe high-temperature superconductors, is systematically studied using the Dynamical Cluster Approximation and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations as cluster solver. Due to the non-locality of the d-wave superconducting order parameter, the results on small clusters show large size and geometry effects. In large enough clusters, the results are independent of the cluster size and display a finite temperature instability to d-wave superconductivity.
A variational ground state of the repulsive Hubbard model on a square lattice is investigated numerically for an intermediate coupling strength (U = 8t) and for moderate sizes (from 6 x 6 to 10 x 10). Our ansatz is clearly superior to other widely used variational wave functions. The results for order parameters and correlation functions provide new insight for the antiferromagnetic state at half filling as well as strong evidence for a superconducting phase away from half filling.
To understand the interplay between nematic fluctuation and superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, we performed a systematic study of the realistic two-orbital Hubbard model by using the constrained-path quantum Monte Carlo method. Our numerical results showed that the on-site nematic interaction induces a strong enhancement of nematic fluctuations at various momentums, especially at ($π$,$π$). Simultaneously, it was found that the on-site nematic interaction suppresses the ($π$,0)/(0,$π$) antiferromagnetic order and long-range electron pairing correlations for dominant pairing chann…
We reexamine whether the essence of high-Tc superconductivity is contained in doped Hubbard models on the square lattice by using recently developed pre-projected Gaussian-basis Monte Carlo method. The superconducting correlations of the dx2-y2 wave symmetry in the ground state at distance r decays essentially as inverse cubic of r. The upper bound of the correlation at long distances estimated by this unbiased method is 0.001, indicating that recent extensions of dynamical mean-field theories and variational methods yielded at least an order of magnitude overestimates of it. The correlations …
Using the variational Monte-Carlo method we find that a relatively weak long-range electron-phonon interaction induces a d-wave superconducting state of doped Mott-Hubbard insulators and/or strongly-correlated metals with a condensation energy significantly larger than can be obtained with Coulomb repulsion only. Moreover, the superconductivity is shown to exist for infinite on-site Coulomb repulsion, removing the requirement for additional mechanisms such as spin fluctuations to mediate d-wave superconductivity. We argue that the superconducting state is robust with respect to a more intricat…
We study the spin-fluctuation-mediated $s\pm$-wave superconductivity in the bilayer Hubbard model with vertical and diagonal interlayer hoppings. As in the two-leg ladder model with diagonal hoppings, studied previously by the present authors, superconductivity is strongly enhanced when one of the bands lies just below (or touches) the Fermi level, that is, when the band is incipient. The strong enhancement of superconductivity is because large weight of the spin fluctuations lies in an appropriate energy range, whereas the low energy, pair-breaking spin fluctuations are suppressed. The optimi…
A refined variational wave function for the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model is studied numerically, with the aim of approaching the difficult crossover regime of intermediate values of U. The issue of a superconducting ground state with d-wave symmetry is investigated for an average electron density n=0.8125 and for U=8t. Due to finite-size effects a clear-cut answer to this fundamental question has not yet been reached.
We study the renormalization of the quasiparticle properties in weak ferromagnetic metals, due to spin fluctuations, away from the quantum critical point for small magnetic moment. We explain the origin of the s-wave superconducting instability in the ferromagnetic phase and find that the vertex corrections are small and Migdal's theorem is satisfied away from the quantum critical point.
We study the occurrence and the origin of ferromagnetic fluctuations in the longitudinal spin susceptibility of the $t$-$t'$-Rashba-Hubbard model on the square lattice. The combined effect of the second-neighbor hopping $t'$ and the spin-orbit coupling leads to ferromagnetic fluctuations in a broad filling region. The spin-orbit coupling splits the energy bands, leading to two van Hove fillings, where the sheets of the Fermi surface change their topology. Between these two van Hove fillings the model shows ferromagnetic fluctuations. We find that these ferromagnetic fluctuations originate from…
Spin and charge fluctuations and superconductivity in Na_0.35CoO_2*1.3H_2O are studied based on a multi-orbital Hubbard model. By applying the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation, we show that the Hund's-rule coupling between the Co t2g orbitals causes ferromagnetic spin fluctuation. Triplet pairing is favored by this ferromagnetic fluctuation on the hole-pocket band. We propose that, in Na_0.35CoO_2*1.3H_2O, Co t2g orbitals and inter-orbital Hund's-rule coupling play important roles on the triplet pairing, and this compound can be a first example of the triplet superconductor mediated b…
It is shown, using asymptotically exact methods, that the two dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with strongly modulated interactions exhibits ``high temperature superconductivity". Specifically, the explicit modulation, which has the same symmetry as period 4 bond-centered stripes, breaks the system into an alternating array of more and less heavily hole doped, nearly decoupled two-leg ladders. It is shown that this system exhibits a pairing scale determined by the spin-gap of the undoped two-leg ladder, and a phase ordering temperature proportional to a low positive power of the inter-ladde…
A microscopic theory of superconductivity in the extended Hubbard model which takes into account the intersite Coulomb repulsion and electron-phonon interaction is developed in the limit of strong correlations. The Dyson equation for normal and pair Green functions expressed in terms of the Hubbard operators is derived. The self-energy is obtained in the noncrossing approximation. In the normal state, antiferromagnetic short-range correlations result in the electronic spectrum with a narrow bandwidth. We calculate superconducting Tc by taking into account the pairing mediated by charge and spi…
We study superconductivity in two-band models where one of the bands does or does not intersect the Fermi level depending on the parameter values. Applying a many-variable variational Monte-Carlo method for a Hubbard model on two-leg ladder and bilayer square lattices, we show that superconductivity can be enhanced in a parameter regime where the edge of one of the bands is near the Fermi energy, that is, when the band is incipient. The resemblence of the present results to those obtained by a weak coupling method in a recent study suggests that, even in the large $U$ regime, the suppression o…
In this paper we revisit the glass model describing the macroscopic behavior of the High-Temperature superconductors. We link the glass model at the microscopic level to the striped phase phenomenon, recently discussed widely. The size of the striped phase domains is consistent with earlier predictions of the glass model when it was introduced for High-Temperature Superconductivity in 1987. In an additional step we use the Hubbard model to describe the microscopic mechanism for d-wave pairing within these finite size stripes. We discuss the implications for superconducting correlations of Hubb…
In a recent X-ray absorption study in boron doped diamond, Nakamura et al. have seen a well isolated narrow boron impurity band in non-superconducting samples and an additional narrow band at the chemical potential in a superconducting sample. We interpret the beautiful spectra as evidence for upper Hubbard band of a Mott insulating impurity band and an additional metallic `mid-gap band' of a conducting `self-doped' Mott insulator. This supports the basic framework of a recent theory of the present author of strongly correlated impurity band superconductivity (SCIBS) in a template of a wide-ga…
Divergencies appearing in perturbation expansions of interacting many-body systems can often be removed by expanding around a suitably chosen renormalized (instead of the non-interacting) Hamiltonian. We describe such a renormalized perturbation expansion for interacting Fermi systems, which treats Fermi surface shifts and superconductivity with an arbitrary gap function via additive counterterms. The expansion is formulated explicitly for the Hubbard model to second order in the interaction. Numerical soutions of the self-consistency condition determining the Fermi surface and the gap functio…
It is rigorously shown that the two-dimensional Hubbard model with narrow bands (including next nearest-neighbor hopping, etc.) does not exhibit $d_{x^2 -y^2}$-wave pairing long-range order at any nonzero temperature. This kind of pairing long-range order will also be excluded at zero temperature if an excited energy gap opens in the charge excitation spectrum of the system. These results hold true for both repulsive and attractive Coulomb interactions and for any electron fillings, and are consistent with quantum Monto Carlo calculations.
Motivated by superconductivity (SC) in layered nitrides, we study an ionic-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, which consists of two sublattices with an energy-level offset, by using an optimization variational Monte Carlo method. Parameter values for the Coulomb interaction and the energy-level offset, to realize a band insulator in non-doped state, are evaluated, and the SC state is investigated in a carrier-doped band insulator. It is found that, in a weakly doped band insulator, spin fluctuation remains and the spin-singlet d-wave SC state is realized. Present results support an unconven…
We briefly overview the importance of Hubbard and Anderson-lattice models as applied to explanation of high-temperature and heavy-fermion superconductivity. Application of the models during the last two decades provided an explanation of the paired states in correlated fermion systems and thus extended essentially their earlier usage to the description of itinerant magnetism, fluctuating valence, and the metal-insulator transition. In second part, we also present some of the new results concerning the unconventional superconductivity and obtained very recently in our group. A comparison with e…
Doped Hubbard model is a simple model for the high-Tc cuprate superconductors, while its ground state remains a challenge. Here, by performing state-of-the-art variational Monte Carlo calculations for the strong-coupling Hubbard model, we find evidences that the d-wave superconducting phase emerges always near the phase separation region and the superconducting order has one-to-one correspondence with the enhancement of charge compressibility. The order as well as the phase separation are vulnerable to realistic intersite Coulomb interaction while the superexchange interaction enhances both. A…
We investigate the behavior of weak ferromagnetic metals close to the ferromagnetic critical point. We show that in the limit of small magnetic moment the low temperature metallic phase is rigorously described by a local ferromagnetic Fermi liquid that has a momentum-independent self-energy. Whereas, non-Fermi liquid features develop at higher temperatures. Furthermore, we find that an instability towards s-wave superconductivity is possible when the exchange splitting is comparable to the superconducting gap.
We study by the Gutzwiller approximation the melting of the valence bond crystal phase of a bilayer Hubbard model at sufficiently large inter-layer hopping. We find that a superconducting domain, with order parameter $d_{z^2-r^2}$, $z$ being the inter-layer direction and $r$ the intra-layer one, is stabilized variationally close to the half-filled non-magnetic Mott insulator. Superconductivity exists at half-filling just at the border of the Mott transition and extends away from half-filling into a whole region till a critical doping, beyond which it gives way to a normal metal phase. This res…
Single- and multi-band Hubbard models have been found to describe many of the complex phenomena that are observed in the cuprate and iron-based high-temperature superconductors. Simulations of these models therefore provide an ideal framework to study and understand the superconducting properties of these systems and the mechanisms responsible for them. Here we review recent dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations of these models, which provide an unbiased view of the leading correlations in the system. In particular, we discuss what these simulations tell us about superconductivity in…
We demonstrate a robust frustration-driven charge-order to superconductivity transition in the half-filled negative-U extended Hubbard model. Superconductivity extends over a broad region of the parameter space. We argue that the model provides the correct insight to understanding unconventional superconductivity in the organic charge-transfer solids and other quarter-filled systems.
The superconducting instabilities of the doped repulsive 2D Hubbard model are studied in the intermediate to strong coupling regime with help of the Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA). To solve the effective cluster problem we employ an extended Non Crossing Approximation (NCA), which allows for a transition to the broken symmetry state. At sufficiently low temperatures we find stable d-wave solutions with off-diagonal long range order. The maximal $T_c\approx 150K$ occurs for a doping $δ\approx 20%$ and the doping dependence of the transition temperatures agrees well with the generic high-…
We transform the quartic Hubbard terms in the extended Hubbard model to a quadratic form by making the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation for the electron operators. This transformation allows us to derive exact results for mass operator and charge-charge and spin-spin correlation functions for s-wave superconductivity. We discuss the application of the method to the d-wave superconductivity.
We have rigorously shown that a strong Hubbard repulsion can cause superconductivity. The model, which has a particular set of local symmetries, manifests the phase diagram of many unconventional superconductors; anti-ferromagnetism paramagnetism, superconductivity, and even ferromagnetism are all observed. The key technique in the analysis is an exact non-linear fermion transformation, which preserves the correlated motion of electrons while removing the strong interactions. Using resolvent formalism, it is exactly shown that two holes at the Mott point bind to form a localised Cooper pair. A…
Bilayer Moiré structures are a highly tunable laboratory to investigate the physics of strongly correlated electron systems. Moiré transition metal dichalcogenides at low-energies, in particular, are believed to be described by a single narrow band Hubbard model on a triangular lattice with spin-orbit coupling. Motivated by recent experimental evidence for superconductivity in twisted bilayer materials, we investigate the possible superconducting pairings in a two-dimensional single band Rashba-Hubbard model. Using a random-phase approximation in the presence of nearest and next-nearest neighb…
The dual-fermion approach offers a way to perform diagrammatic expansion around the dynamical mean-field theory. Using this formalism, the influence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations on the self-energy is taken into account through ladder-type diagrams in the particle-hole channel. The resulting phase diagram for the (quasi-)two-dimensional Hubbard model exhibits antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity. Furthermore, a uniform charge instability, i.e., phase separation, is obtained in the low doping regime around the Mott insulator. We also examine spin/charge density wave fluctuations …
We propose a mechanism of superconductivity from purely repulsive interactions in the strong coupling regime, where the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) mechanism such as the spin-fluctuation approach is difficult to apply. Based on the SU(2) slave-rotor representation of the Hubbard model, we find that the single energy scale for the amplitude formation of Cooper pairs and their phase coherence is separated into two energy scales, allowing the so called pseudogap state where such Cooper pairs are coherent locally but not globally, interpreted as realization of the density-phase uncertainty pri…
We devise a computational approach to the Hubbard model that captures the strong coupling dynamics arising when the Fermi level is at a Van Hove singularity in the density of states. We rely on an approximate degeneracy among the many-body states accounting for the main instabilities of the system (antiferromagnetism, d-wave superconductivity). The Fermi line turns out to be deformed in a manner consistent with the pinning of the Fermi level to the Van Hove singularity. For a doping rate $δ\sim 0.2$, the ground state is characterized by d-wave symmetry, quasiparticles gapped only at the saddle…
We study a three-dimensional single-band repulsive Hubbard model at weak coupling. We establish the superconducting phase diagram in the parameter space of the chemical potential and the out-of-plane hopping strength. The model continuously connects the Hubbard model in two and three dimensions. We confirm previously-established results in these limits, and identify a rich structure of competing order parameters in between. Specifically, we find five types of $p$- and $d$-wave orders. In several regions of the phase diagram, even when the Fermi surface is a corrugated cylinder, the ground stat…
The weak-coupling renormalization group method is an asymptotically exact method to find superconducting instabilities of a lattice model of correlated electrons. Here we extend it to spin-orbit coupled lattice systems and study the emerging superconducting phases of the Rashba-Hubbard model. Since Rashba type spin-orbit coupling breaks inversion symmetry, the arising superconducting phases may be a mixture of spin-singlet and spin-triplet states. We study the two-dimensional square lattice as a paradigm and discuss the symmetry properties of the arising spin-orbit coupled superconducting stat…
The two-orbital superconducting state is modeled by on-site intra-orbital negative-U Hubbard correlations together with inter-orbital pair-transfer interactions. The critical temperature is mainly governed by intra-orbital attractive interactions and it can pass through an additional maximum as a function of band filling. For the certain number of electrons the clear interband proximity effect is observable in the superconducting state of the band with a smaller gap. The influence of band fillings and orbital site energies on the temperature dependencies of two-component superconductivity cohe…
