The flux excess of elliptical galaxies in the far-ultraviolet can be reproduced by population synthesis models when accounting for the population of old hot helium-burning subdwarf stars. This has been achieved by Han and coworkers through a quantitative model of binary stellar evolution. Here, we compare the resulting evolutionary population synthesis model to the GALEX far-near ultraviolet colors (FUV-NUV) of Virgo cluster early-type galaxies that were published by Boselli and coworkers. FUV-NUV is reddest at about the dividing luminosity of dwarf and giant galaxies, and becomes increasingly blue for both brighter and fainter luminosities. This behavior can be easily explained by the binary model with a continuous sequence of longer duration and later truncation of star formation at lower galaxy masses. Thus, in contrast to previous conclusions, the GALEX data do not require a dichotomy between the stellar population properties of dwarfs and giants. Their apparently opposite behavior in FUV-NUV occurs naturally when the formation of hot subdwarfs through binary evolution is taken into account.
We draw a quantitative comparison of the distribution of the galaxies and the intra-cluster gas in the Virgo cluster by extending the morphological analysis by Binggeli et al. (1987) to the intra-cluster gas. We use the Virgo Cluster Catalog in combination with data from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The galaxy distribution and the gas distribution are relatively similar. In both wavebands the irregular structure of Virgo can be decomposed into three major subclusters centred on M87, M49, and M86. A new statistical method of subcluster decomposition is applied. Radial galaxy and X-ray density prof…
We have determined spectroscopic ages of elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster using spectra of very high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N/A > 100). We observed 8 galaxies with the Subaru Telescope and have combined this sample with 6 galaxies previously observed with the WHT. To determine their ages we have used a new method based on the Hgamma_sigma age indicator, which is virtually independent of the effects of metallicity. Apart from ages we have estimated abundances of various elements. In this paper we present the observations, the data reduction and the reliability of the Hgamma_sigma meth…
We have employed FORS1/2+VLT to acquire deep B and R CCD images of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the direction of the Virgo cluster. For each dwarf we measure the R-band surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) magnitude \bar{m}_R and the (B-R) colour in a number of fields at different galactocentric distances. From the field-to-field variation of the two quantities we determine the SBF distance by means of the (B-R)-\bar{M}_R relation. The derived distances of the dwarfs are ranging from 14.9-21.3Mpc, with a mean 1sigma uncertainty of 1.4Mpc, confirming that there is considerable depth in the d…
We explore the origin of the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) of early type galaxies in the Virgo cluster using spectra of very high S/N ratio for six elliptical galaxies selected along the CMR. The data are analysed using a new evolutionary stellar population synthesis model to generate galaxy spectra at the resolution given by their velocity dispersions. In particular we use a new age indicator that is virtually free of the effects of metallicity. We find that the luminosity weighted mean ages of Virgo ellipticals are greater than ~8 Gyr, and show no clear trend with galaxy luminosity. We als…
We present new imaging and spectroscopic observations of six ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, along with re-analysed data for five Fornax Cluster UCDs. These are the most luminous UCDs: -14<Mv<-12 mag. Our HST imaging shows that most of the UCDs have shallow or steep cusps in their cores; only one UCD has a flat ``King'' core. None of the UCDs show tidal cutoffs down to our limiting surface brightness. Spectroscopic analysis shows that Virgo UCDs are older than 8 Gyr and have metallicities in the range [Z/H]=-1.35...+0.35 dex. Five Virgo UCDs have super-solar alpha/Fe a…
We have used the WFPC2 camera of the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain deep F814W images of a blank field in the Virgo Cluster located 41 arcmin northwest of M87. We perform star counts in that field, and in another Virgo field observed by Ferguson, Tanvir & von Hippel (1998), and show that, when compared to the Hubble Deep Field North and South, the Virgo Cluster contains an excess of objects with magnitudes I > 27. We attribute this excess to a population of intracluster red-giant branch (IC-RGB) stars. By modeling the luminosity function of these stars, we show that the tip of the Virgo RGB …
The Virgo and Fornax clusters of galaxies play central roles in determining the Hubble constant H_0. A powerful and direct way of establishing distances for elliptical galaxies is to use the luminosities of the brightest red-giant stars (the TRGB luminosity, at M_I = -4.2). Here we report the direct observation of the TRGB stars in a dwarf elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. We find its distance to be 15.7 +- 1.5 Megaparsecs, from which we estimate a Hubble constant of H_0 = 77 +- 8 km/s/Mpc. Under the assumption of a low-density Universe with the simplest cosmology, the age of the Univers…
We present UBVRI surface photometry for 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with previously measured kinematic properties. The global optical colors are red, with median values for the sample of 0.24 +/- 0.03 in (U-B), 0.77 +/- 0.02 in (B-V), and 1.02 +/- 0.03 in (V-I). We recover the well known color-magnitude relation for cluster galaxies, but find no significant difference in dominant stellar population between rotating and non-rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies; the average age of the dominant stellar population is 5-7 Gyr in all 16 galaxies in this sample. Analysis of optica…
We report the initial results of a survey for intracluster planetary nebulae in the Virgo Cluster. In two 16' x 16' fields, we identify 69 and 16 intracluster planetary nebula candidates, respectively. In a third 16' x 16' field near the central elliptical galaxy M87, we detect 75 planetary nebula candidates, of which a substantial fraction are intracluster in nature. By examining the number of the planetaries detected in each field and the shape of the planetary nebula luminosity function, we show that 1) the intracluster starlight of Virgo is distributed non-uniformly, and varies between sub…
We use masses, radii, and luminosities of the detached eclipsing binary OGLEGC17 derived from photometric and spectroscopic observations to calculate the age and distance of the globular cluster omega Cen. Age versus turnoff mass and age versus luminosity relations from Girardi et al. (2000) yield two independent estimates of the age, 9.1<t<16.7 Gyr and 12.9<t<18.5 Gyr. The distance and distance modulus derived by use of the infrared versus surface brightness relation are d =5385+-300 pc and (m-M)_V=14.06+-0.11. Distances derived from our infrared surface brightness versus color relation and t…
The currently available values and confidence limits for Omega_m0, H_0 and globular cluster ages still indicate that the dark energy that dominates the Universe could also be a form of quintessence or phantom energy. In fact, current cosmological values favor phantom energy. To increase the likelihood of a cosmological constant as dark energy instead of phantom energy, the possibilities seem to lie in reducing globular cluster ages, the Hubble constant, or both, and possibly advancing the epoch of globular cluster formation. For a set of possible dark energy equations of state that includes th…
We investigate current problems in obtaining reliable ages for old stellar systems based on stellar population synthesis modelling of their integrated spectra. In particular, we address the large ages derived for the globular cluster 47 Tuc, which is at odds with its Color-Magnitude-Diagram (CMD) age. Using a new age indicator, Hgamma_sigma<130, which is particularly effective at breaking the degeneracy between age and metallicity, we confirm the discrepancy between the spectroscopic age and the CMD age of 47 Tuc, in that the spectroscopic age is much older. Nebular emission appears unlikely t…
The planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) technique for determining distances to galaxies now has been applied to 34 galaxies, including 6 in the Virgo cluster and 3 in the Fornax cluster. Of these, 16 galaxies are late-type or spirals and presumably contain Cepheid variables useful for verifying the PNLF method. For 7 of these galaxies, Cepheid distances exist; the PNLF distances agree with the Cepheid distances within the dispersion of 8% and within a zero-point offset of 1%. In addition, 3 small groups were studied (NGC 1023, Leo I, and Coma I) where both spiral and elliptical distanc…
We report on the discovery of an isolated, compact HII region in the Virgo cluster. The object is located in the diffuse outer halo of NGC 4388, or could possibly be in intracluster space. Star formation can thus take place far outside the main star forming regions of galaxies. This object is powered by a small starburst with an estimated mass of $\sim 400\msun$ and age of $\sim 3\myr$. From a total sample of 17 HII region candidates, the present rate of isolated star formation estimated in our Virgo field is small, $\sim 10^{-6} Msun arcmin}^{-2} yr^{-1}$. However, this mode of star formation…
We present spatially-resolved internal kinematics and stellar chemical abundances for a sample of dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster observed with Keck/ESI. We find that 4 out of 17 dEs have major axis rotation velocities consistent with rotational flattening, while the remaining dEs have no detectable major axis rotation. Despite this difference in internal kinematics, rotating and non-rotating dEs are remarkably similar in terms of their position in the Fundamental Plane, morphological structure, stellar populations, and local environment. We present evidence for faint under…
NGC 4649 (M60) is one of a handful of giant Virgo ellipticals. We have obtained Gemini/GMOS spectra for 38 GCs associated with this galaxy. Applying the multi-index chi^2 minimisation technique of Proctor & Sansom (2002) with the single stellar population models of Thomas, Maraston & Korn (2004) we derive ages, metallicities and alpha-element abundance ratios. We find several young (2--3 Gyr old) super-solar metallicity GCs, while the majority are old (>10 Gyrs), spanning a range of metallicities from solar to [Z/H]=-2. At least two of these young GCs are at large projected radii of 17-20 kpc.…
We study the old problem of the uniqueness of chemical evolution models. We showed in Molla et al. (1999) that multiphase models for three Virgo cluster galaxies were able to reproduce the observed radial distributions of spectral indices Mg2 and Fe52. But those models may fit the present-epoch radial distributions with different star formation histories. The two spectral indices are in turn affected by the well known age-metallicity degeneracy which prevents the disentagling of age and metallicity for single stellar populations. In this work we face both issues by analyzing a set of multiphas…
We present radial velocities for 144 globular clusters around the Virgo gE NGC 4472 (M49), and ages and metallicities from co-added spectra of 131 clusters. We confirm our earlier finding that the metal-poor clusters have a significantly higher velocity dispersion than the metal-rich clusters, and we find little or no rotation in the metal-rich clusters. The velocity dispersion profile is consistent with isotropic orbits for the clusters and the NGC 4472 mass distribution inferred from X-ray data. Our sample of clusters spans a metallicity range of -1.6 < [Fe/H] < 0 dex. The metal-poor and met…
The Virgo Cluster is the dominant mass concentration in the Local Supercluster and the largest collection of elliptical and lenticular galaxies in the nearby universe. In this paper, we present an introduction to the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey: a program to image, in the F475W and F850LP bandpasses (Sloan g and z), 100 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. We describe the selection of the program galaxies and their ensemble properties, the choice of filters, the field placement and orientation, the limiting magnitudes of the…
New calibrations of spectrophotometric indices of elliptical galaxies as functions of spectrophotometric indices are presented, permitting estimates of mean stellar population ages and metallicities. These calibrations are based on evolutionary models including a two-phase interstellar medium, infall and a galactic wind.Free parameters were fixed by requiring that models reproduce the mean trend of data in the color-magnitude diagram as well as in the plane of indices Hbeta-Mg2 and Mg2-<Fe>. To improve the location of faint ellipticals(MB > -20) in the Hbeta-Mg2 diagram, down-sizing was introd…
The correlation between [Mg/Fe] and galaxy mass found in elliptical galaxies sets a strong constraint on the duration of star formation. Furthermore, the colour-magnitude relation restricts the range of ages and metallicities of the stellar populations. We combine these two constraints with a model of star formation and chemical enrichment including infall and outflow of gas to find that the trend towards supersolar [Mg/Fe] in massive ellipticals excludes a pure metallicity sequence as an explanation of the colour-magnitude relation. An age spread is required, attributable either to a range of…
Top of the wish list of any astronomer who wants to understand galaxy formation and evolution is to resolve the stellar populations of a sample of giant elliptical galaxies: to take spectra of the stars and make Colour-Magnitude Diagrams going down to the oldest main sequence turn-offs. It is only by measuring the relative numbers of stars on Main Sequence Turnoffs at ages ranging back to the time of the earliest star formation in the Universe that we can obtain unambiguous star formation histories. Understanding star formation histories of individual galaxies underpins all our theories of gal…
Using single channel infrared photometry from the literature, a provisional K-band diameter--velocity dispersion relation for elliptical galaxies in the Coma and Virgo clusters is derived. The Coma cluster relation has \~1.5 times lower scatter at K than in B or V. Excluding 4 outliers, the RMS scatter at K for 24 galaxies in Coma is only 4.8% in distance, close to the limit implied by the observational errors. Distance estimates based on the IR \Dsig relation will be more accurate than those derived from optical data. The improvement in the infrared is attributed to a decrease in sensitivity …
We present the results of a Keck spectroscopic study of globular clusters associated with the Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical VCC 1386. We analyze blue spectroscopic absorption lines from 3500-5500 A for 13 globular cluster candidates and confirm that five are associated with VCC 1386. By comparing metal and Balmer line indices of these globular clusters with alpha-enhanced single stellar population models we find that these systems are metal poor with [Fe/H] < -1.35 and old, with ages > 5 Gyr at 3 sigma confidence, placing their formation at z >1. This is one of the first spectroscopic studies…
A simple model of chemical enrichment in cluster early-type galaxies is presented where the main parameters driving the formation of the stellar component are reduced to four: infall timescale (tf), formation epoch (zF), star formation efficiency (Ceff) and fraction of gas ejected in outflows (Bout). We find that only variations in Bout or Ceff can account for the colour-magnitude relation, so that the most luminous galaxies had low values of ejected gas and high efficiencies. The combination of chemical enrichment tracks with population synthesis models is used to explore the correlation betw…
As a result of an extensive observational campaign targeting the Virgo cluster, we obtained integrated (drift-scan mode) optical spectra and multiwavelength (UV,U,B,V,H) photometry for 124 and 330 galaxies, respectively, spanning the whole Hubble sequence, and with m_p<=16 (M_p<=-15). These data were combined to obtain galaxy SEDs extending from 2000 to 22000 A. By fitting these SEDs with synthetic ones derived using Bruzual & Charlot population synthesis models we try to constrain observationally the SFH of these galaxies. Assuming a Salpeter IMF and an analytical form for the SFH, the fit fr…
The giant elliptical galaxy M86 in Virgo has a ~28 kpc long dust trail inside its optical halo that points toward the nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy, VCC 882. The trail seems to be stripped material from the dwarf. Extinction measurements suggest that the ratio of the total gas mass in the trail to the blue luminosity of the dwarf is about unity, which is comparable to such ratios in dwarf irregular galaxies. The ram pressure experienced by the dwarf galaxy in the hot gaseous halo of M86 was comparable to the internal gravitational binding energy density of the presumed former gas disk in V…
Direct identification of the progenitors of supernovae (SNe) is rare because of the required spatial resolution and depth of the archival data prior to the SN explosions. Here we report on the identification of the progenitors of two nearby SNe in the Virgo cluster: SN 2006my in NGC 4651 and SN 2006ov in M61. We obtained high-quality ground-based images of SN 2006my with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, and are able to locate the site of the SN on pre-SN {\it Hubble Space Telescope} ({\it HST}) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images to a high precision (1$σ$ uncertainty of $\pm0\farcs$05). We…
We present an analysis of the optical colors of 413 Virgo cluster early-type dwarf galaxies (dEs), based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data. Our study comprises (1) a comparison of the color-magnitude relation (CMR) of the different dE subclasses that we identified in Paper III of this series, (2) a comparison of the shape of the CMR in low and high-density regions, (3) an analysis of the scatter of the CMR, and (4) an interpretation of the observed colors with ages and metallicities from population synthesis models. We find that the CMRs of nucleated (dE(N)) and non-nucleated dEs (dE(nN…
The stellar population and star clusters around six regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are studied to understand the correlation between star formation and cluster formation rates. We used the stellar database of the OGLE II LMC survey and the star cluster catalogues. The observed distribution of stellar density on the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) were compared with the synthetic ones generated from the stellar evolutionary models. By minimising the reduced chi-square values, the star formation history of the regions were obtained in terms of the star formation rates (SFRs). All t…
We compare optical and near infrared colours of globular clusters in M87, the central giant elliptical in Virgo, and NGC 4478, an intermediate luminosity galaxy in Virgo, close in projection to M87. Combining V and I photometry obtained with the WFPC2 on HST and Ks photometry obtained with the NIRC on Keck 1, we find the broad range in colour and previously detected bi-modality in M87. We confirm that NGC 4478 only hosts a blue sub-population of globular clusters and now show that these clusters' V-I and V-K colours are very similar to those of the halo globular clusters in Milky Way and M31. …
Keck/ESI spectroscopy is presented for six Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies. The mean line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion are resolved as a function of radius along the major axis of each galaxy, nearly doubling the total number of dEs with spatially-resolved stellar kinematics. None of the observed objects shows evidence of strong rotation: upper limits on v_rot/sigma are well below those expected for rotationally-flattened objects. Such limits place strong constraints on dE galaxy formation models. Although these galaxies continue the trend of low rotation velocities o…
The processes of star formation are fundamentally different from those of planet formation. Since the mass of a very-low-mass object alone doesn't allow us to uniquely determine its basic nature, we have to look at its other characteristics, such as its motion, its age, its atmospheric composition, its internal structure and composition, etc., in order to ascertain its formation mechanism.
Understanding the origin and evolution of dwarf early-type galaxies remains an important open issue in modern astrophysics. Internal kinematics of a galaxy contains signatures of violent phenomena which may have occurred, e.g. mergers or tidal interactions, while stellar population keeps a fossil record of the star formation history, therefore studying connection between them becomes crucial for understanding galaxy evolution. Here, in the first paper of the series, we present the data on spatially resolved stellar populations and internal kinematics for a large sample of dwarf elliptical (dE)…
We present a population synthesis study of NGC4435, an early-type Virgo galaxy interacting with NGC4438. We combine new spectroscopic observations obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope IRS instrument with IRAC archival data and broad band data from the literature. The IRS spectrum shows prominent PAH features, low ionization emission lines and H_2 rotational lines arising from the dusty circumnuclear disk characterizing this galaxy. The central SED, from X-ray to radio, is well fitted by a model of an exponential burst superimposed on an old simple stellar population. From the lack of high…
(abridged) We introduce and discuss the properties of a theoretical (B-K)-(J-K) integrated colour diagram for single-age, single-metallicity stellar populations. This combination of integrated colours is able to largely disentangle the well known age-metallicity degeneracy when the age of the population is greater than ~300 Myr. We discuss in detail the effect on this colour-colour diagram of alpha-enhanced metal abundance ratios, the presence of blue horizontal branch stars unaccounted for in the theoretical calibration, and of statistical colour fluctuations in low mass stellar systems. In t…
We report discovery of young embedded structures in three diffuse elliptical galaxies (dE) in the Virgo cluster: IC 783, IC 3468, and IC 3509. We performed 3D spectroscopic observations of these galaxies using the MPFS spectrograph at the Russian 6-m telescope, and obtained spatially resolved distributions of kinematical and stellar population parameters by fitting high-resolution PEGASE.HR synthetic single stellar populations (SSP) in the pixel space. In all three galaxies, the luminosity weighted age of the nuclei, about 4 Gyr, is considerably younger than population in the outer regions of …
