We present the results of an effort to identify and study a sample of the likely progenitors of elliptical (E) and lenticular (S0) K+A galaxies. To achieve this, we have searched a sample ~11,000 nearby (m(r)<16) early-type galaxies selected by morphology from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Main spectroscopic sample for actively star-forming E and S0 galaxies. Using emission line ratios and visual inspection of SDSS g-band images, we have identified 335 galaxies from the SDSS Fourth Data Release (DR4) as actively star-forming E and S0 galaxies. These galaxies make up about 3% of the total early-type sample and less than 1% of all Main galaxies with m(r)<16. We also identified a sample of ~400 K+A galaxies from DR4 with m(r)<16; more than half of these are E and S0 galaxies. We find that star-forming early-type galaxies and K+A galaxies have similar mass distributions; they are on average less massive than typical early-type galaxies but more massive than the average star-forming galaxy. Both of these types of galaxies are found in higher fractions among all galaxies in lower density environments. The fractions of star-forming E and S0 galaxies and E and S0 K+A galaxies depend on environment in nearly the same way. Model spectra fit to the stellar continua of the star-forming E and S0 galaxies showed that their properties are consistent with star formation episodes of <1 Gyr in duration. The modelling results imply that on average, the star formation episodes will increase the stellar masses by about 4%. There is also evidence that the star-forming regions within these galaxies are rotationally supported.
We summarize the HI properties of early-type galaxies, in particular the differences in HI morphologies observed in early-type galaxies of different luminosities. We find that in low-luminosity early-type galaxies the HI is almost always in a disk-like structure, with central surface densities high enough for star formation to occur. In a few luminous early-type galaxies the HI is also in a disk or in a ring-like structure, but in most luminous early-type galaxies the HI has a relatively irregular morphology. The surface densities in the HI disks in luminous early-type galaxies are lower than …
Clusters of galaxies are strong emitters of EUV and soft X-rays substantially in excess of the contribution from the hot intra-cluster medium at X-ray temperatures. After the initial discovery of EUV excess emission in the Virgo cluster, the phenomenon was reported also for the Coma, A1795 and A2199 clusters. Recent reobservations confirmed the finding, and further searches on a large sample of nearby galaxy clusters are clearly revealing the cosmological impact of the discovery.
We present a study of the connection between star-forming galaxies, AGN host galaxies, and normal early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using the SDSS DR5 and DR4plus data, we select our early-type galaxy sample in the color versus color-gradient space, and we classify the spectral types of the selected early-type galaxies into normal, star-forming, Seyfert, and LINER classes, using several spectral line flux ratios. We investigate the slope in the fundamental space for each class of early-type galaxies and find that there are obvious differences in the slopes of the fund…
We present an analysis of the far-ultraviolet upturn phenomenon (UVX) observed in elliptical galaxies and spiral galaxy bulges. Our premise is that the UV radiation from these systems emanates primarily from extreme horizontal branch (EHB) stars and their progeny. We re-derive the broad-band UV colors $1500-V$ and $2500-V$ for globular clusters and elliptical galaxies from the available satellite data and investigate color-color and color-line strength correlations. We also provide the ingredients necessary for constructing models with arbitrary HB morphologies.
We find a strong correlation between the effective radius of the largest early-type galaxies in compact groups of galaxies and the velocity dispersion of the groups. The lack of a similar correlation for late type galaxies is supportive of the so called second generation merging scenario which predicts that ellipticals should dominate the internal dynamics of the groups, while late-type galaxies are mainly recent interlopers which are still in an early stage of interaction with the group potential.
We discuss the properties of the HI in low-luminosity early-type galaxies. The morphology of the HI is more regular than that of the HI in many more-luminous early-type galaxies. The HI is always distributed in a disk and is more centrally concentrated. The central HI surface densities are higher than in luminous early-type galaxies and are high enough for star formation to occur.
We have found the stellar populations of early-type galaxies are homogeneous with no significant difference in color or Mg2 index, despite the dichotomy between X-ray extended early-type galaxies and X-ray compact ones. Since the X-ray properties reflect the potential gravitational structure and hence the process of galaxy formation, the homogeneity of the stellar populations implies that the formation of stars in early-type galaxies predat es the epoch when the dichotomy of the potential structure was established.
We study the Fundamental Plane of field early-type galaxies at intermediate redshift, using HST WFPC2 observations and deep Keck spectroscopy. Structural parameters and internal velocity dispersions are measured for eighteen galaxies at 0.15 < z < 0.55. Rest frame M/L_B ratios are determined from the Fundamental Plane and compared to those of cluster early-type galaxies at the same redshifts. The systematic offset between M/L ratios of field and cluster early-type galaxies at intermediate redshift is small, and not significant: <ln M/L_B>(field) - <ln M/L_B>(cluster) = -0.18 +- 0.11. The M/L r…
The interplay between dust and molecules is of fundamental importance in early galaxy evolution. First we present the prediction for the dust emission from forming galaxies. Then we discuss the observational strategy for molecules in early galaxies by infrared absorption lines of a bright continuum source behind the clouds. By combining these two approaches, we will be able to have a coherent picture of the very early stage of galaxy evolution.
We briefly discuss the main differences between the HI properties of luminous and low-luminosity early-type galaxies. In luminous early-type galaxies the HI is often irregularly distributed, but in a few cases regular HI disks, of low surface density, are seen. In low-luminosity galaxies, the HI is more often in a disk with high central surface densities. This suggests a different evolution of the gas in these two groups of galaxies.
Gravitational lenses are a unique new constraint on the structure of galaxies. We review the evidence that most lenses are early-type galaxies, the optical properties of the lens galaxies, the evidence against constant M/L models, recent work on the axis ratios of the mass distribution, and the role stellar dynamics plays in gravitational lensing.
We have obtained integral field spectroscopy of a small sample of early-type galaxies to study the kinematical coupling between the stellar and gaseous components in their central regions.
Old, metal-poor globular clusters trace the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies. Their are the best probes, at low redshift, of the building-up of galaxy halos at high redshift. Their properties constrain the characteristics of their progenitors. Recent results suggest that DLAs at z>3 are the likely hosts for their formation. Finally, they shed light on the old, metal-poor halos probably present around all early-type galaxies.
We have systematically investigated the ASCA spectra of 12 early type galaxies. This paper presents the global spectral properties of these systems based on a larger sample than in any previous ASCA study.
We review the most recent observational results on the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies and their mass assembly by focusing on: the existence, properties and role of distant old, massive, passive systems to z~2, the stellar mass function evolution, the ``downsizing'' scenario, and the high-z precursors of massive early-type galaxies.
We present an observational study of the Lx vs Lb sigma^2 relation for early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster based on the XMM-Newton survey data. Compared to a similar relation for a sample dominated by field early-type galaxies, the Coma cluster galaxies show a flatter slope. Our calculations show that adiabatic compression produces a flattening in the Lx vs Lb sigma^2 relation that is in remarkable agreement with the observed effect. Our scenario is further supported by the observed compactness of the X-ray emission of Coma galaxies.
We used the galaxy spectra obtained in the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS) to separate early- and late-type galaxies in the ENACS clusters, by applying a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in combination with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). We represented the spectra by 15 Principal Components, which form the input for the ANN. The latter was trained with morphological types from Dressler, and its success rate was estimated from an independent testing set of galaxies. The success-rate for an early- (E+S0) vs. late-type (Sp+Irr) classification is close to 75 %; somewhat higher for t…
Morphological and spectroscopic studies of high redshift clusters indicate that a significant fraction of present-day early-type galaxies was transformed from star forming galaxies at z<1. On the other hand, the slow luminosity evolution of early-type galaxies and the low scatter in their color-magnitude relation indicate a high formation redshift of their stars. In this paper we construct models which reconcile these apparently contradictory lines of evidence, and we quantify the effects of morphological evolution on the observed photometric properties of early-type galaxies in distant cluste…
We present velocity dispersion measurements for 69 faint early-type galaxies in the core of the Coma cluster, spanning -22.0<M_R<-17.5 mag. We examine the L-σrelation for our sample and compare it to that of bright ellipticals from the literature. The distribution of the the faint early-type galaxies in the L-sigma plane follows the relation L ~ σ^{2.01\pm0.36}, which is significantly shallower from L ~ σ^4 as defined for the bright ellipticals. While increased rotational support for fainter early-type galaxies could account for some of the difference in slope, we show that it cannot explain i…
We examine whether early-type galaxies in clusters may have evolved from later types by the fading of their disks (e.g., as a result of ram-pressure stripping or strangulation) or by enhancement of the bulge luminosity (e.g., due to tidal interactions and mergers). For this purpose, we compare the bulge and disk luminosities of early- and late-type galaxies and of galaxies at different radial distances from the cluster center. We find that, in order for early-type galaxies, including S0s, to have evolved from late-type galaxies, their bulge luminosities must have been physically enhanced. Disk…
Early-type galaxies are not the simple Population II systems they have long been assumed to be. While upwards of 80% of the stellar mass of early-type galaxies likely formed at high redshift, small frostings of intermediate-age stellar populations (a few to 20% percent by mass of 1-2 Gyr old stars) are present in nearly every field and group early-type galaxy and in at least some cluster early-types. These frostings of young stars have little effect on the determination of photometric redshifts, thanks to the age-metallicity degeneracy of broad-band colors, but even mild bursts of star formati…
Early-type galaxies from CfA catalogue were assotiated with IRAS FSC sources. In given sample IR and optical properties were used to obtain some classification of these objects. The existance of significant classes can be evidence of presence one main type of the dust in each galaxy. Physical interpretation of obtained classes was discussed. The dust mass in two classes of galaxies can be calculated using evolution modelling. In this case we can obtain a estimations for chemical composition and initial mass function in these galaxies.
We have developed an efficient photometric technique for identifying young early-type galaxy candidates using a combination of photometric redshifts, spectral-type classification, and optical/near-infrared colors. Applying our technique to the GOODS HST/ACS and VLT/ISAAC data we have selected a complete and homogeneous sample of young elliptical candidates among early-type field galaxies. The distribution of structural parameters for these candidates shows that their selection, which is based on early spectral types, is fully consistent with early morphological types. We investigate the evolut…
We present an observational survey program using planetary nebulae, globular clusters, and X-ray emission to probe the halos of early-type galaxies. We review evidence for scanty dark matter halos around ordinary elliptical galaxies, and discuss the possible implications. We also present measurements of rotation in the halos.
Rampazzo et al. 2005 (Paper I) presented a data-set of line-strength indices for 50 early-type galaxies in the nearby Universe. The galaxy sample is biased toward galaxies showing emission lines, located in environments corresponding to a broad range of local galaxy densities, although predominantly in low density environments. The present addendum to Paper I enlarges the above data-set of line-strength indices by analyzing 18 additional early-type galaxies (three galaxies, namely NGC 3607, NGC 5077 and NGC 5898 have been already presented in the previous set). As in Paper I, we measured 25 li…
In this paper we present new high resolution VLA 1.4 GHz radio continuum observations of five FIR bright CO-rich early-type galaxies and two dwarf early-type galaxies. The position on the radio-FIR correlation combined with striking agreements in morphology between high resolution CO and radio maps show that the radio continuum is associated with star formation in at least four of the eight galaxies. The average star formation rate for the sample galaxies detected in radio is approximately 2 solar masses per year. There is no evidence of a luminous AGN in any of our sample galaxies. We estimat…
Studying 3 samples of early-type galaxies, which include approximately 8800 galaxies and cover a relatively ample magnitude range ($<ΔM>$ $\sim 5$ $mag$), we find that the coefficients as well as the intrinsic dispersion of the Fundamental Plane depend on the width of the magnitude range within which the galaxies are distributed. We analyse this dependence and the results show that it could be due to the fact that the distribution of galaxies in the space defined by the variables $\log (r_{e}), <μ>_{e}, \log(σ)$ depends on the luminosity.
Statistical properties of X-ray luminosity and temperature are studied for 52 early-type galaxies based on the ROSAT PSPC data. All of the X-ray luminous galaxies show largely extended emission with a radius of a few times of 10$r_e$, while X-ray faint galaxies do not show such a component. This leads to a division of early-type galaxies into two categories: X-ray extended and X-ray compact galaxies. Except for a few galaxies in dense cluster environments, the luminosity and temperature of X-ray compact galaxies are well explained by a kinematical heating of the gas supplied by stellar mass lo…
In this paper we propose that the compressive tidal field in the centers of flat-core early type galaxies and ultraluminous galaxies compresses molecular clouds producing dense gas obseved in the centers of these galaxies. The effect of galactic tidal fields is usually considered disruptive in the literature. However, for some galaxies, the mass profile flattens towards the center and the resulting galactic tidal field is not disruptive but instead it is compressive within the flat-core region. We have used the virial theorem to determine the minimum density of a molecular cloud to be stable a…
We show that the observed relationship between the fraction of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) found in globular clusters (GCs) and the GC-specific frequency for early-type galaxies is consistent with an LMXB formation model in which the field population of LMXBs is formed in situ via primordial binary formation. The suggestion that a significant fraction of the field LMXB population in early-type galaxies was formed in GCs is not required by the data. Finally, we discuss observational studies that will test this model more thoroughly.
As the Chandra X-ray Observatory mission matures, increasing numbers of nearby galaxies are being observed multiple times, sampling the variability of extragalactic X-ray binaries on timescales extending from seconds to years. We present results on luminous low-mass X-ray binaries from several early-type galaxies. We show that instantaneous LMXB luminosity functions of early-type galaxies do not significantly change between observations; a relatively low fraction of sources are strongly variable on <~ 5 yr timescales. We discuss the implications that a relatively small number of transient LMXB…
Several lines of evidence suggest that early-type galaxies might have been very dusty during their initial evolutionary stages, characterized by intense star formation activity. The radio selection has provided, by far, the richest samples of high-$z$ galaxies, most likely of early type, which may therefore yield crucial direct information on the period when the bulk of stars were born. In order to investigate the role of dust in these phases, we have analyzed recent observations of a number of high-$z$ radio galaxies in the framework of a self-consistent scenario for the evolution of early ty…
Using a semi-analytical model for galaxy formation, combined with a large N-body simulation, we investigate the origin of the dichotomy among early-type galaxies. We find that boxy galaxies originate from mergers with a progenitor mass ratio $n < 2$ and with a combined cold gas mass fraction $F_{\rm cold} < 0.1$. Our model accurately reproduces the observed fraction of boxy systems as a function of luminosity and halo mass, for both central galaxies and satellites. After correcting for the stellar mass dependence, the properties of the last major merger of early-type galaxies are independent o…
We study the radial distribution of supernova Ia (SNe Ia) in morphologically selected early-type host galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and discuss its implications for the progenitor systems of SNe Ia. While new observations of early-type galaxies suggest that they contain small fractions of young stellar populations, they are also the most likely hosts for long time delay SNe Ia. We find that there is no statistically significant difference between the radial distribution of SNe Ia and the light profile of their early-type host galaxies, which are dominated by old, metal-rich…
In a recent paper Loveday et al. (1992) have presented new results on the luminosity function for a sample of galaxies with $b_J \le 17.15$. After having morphologically classified each galaxy (early--type, late--type, merged or uncertain), they have estimated the parameters of a Schechter luminosity function for early-- and late--type galaxies. However, in their sample there is a bias against identifying early--type galaxies at large distances and/or faint magnitudes: in fact, many of the early--type galaxies at faint magnitudes have probably been classified as ``uncertain". As discussed in L…
We show the possibility to exploit the non-linear behaviour of artificial neural network (ANN) for the identification of the early-type component of the population of the core of clusters of galaxies. We result in a measurement of the luminosity function of the E/S0 galaxies which disfavours the hypothesis of a universal LF and calls for dynamical influences.
We present the rest-frame colour-magnitude diagram for 35 early-type galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field with median redshift 0.9. Although with considerable scatter, a red sequence well-described by the passive evolution of an intrinsically old stellar population is observed. Comparison with the passively evolved colour-magnitude relation of the rich Coma cluster ($z=0.023$) indicates that around half of the early-type galaxies in the field at this redshift are as old as those in rich clusters.
We have extended our H alpha objective prism survey of 8 low-redshift clusters (viz. Abell 262, 347, 400, 426, 569, 779, 1367 and 1656) to include a complete sample of early-type galaxies within 1.5 Abell radii of the cluster centres. Of the 379 galaxies surveyed, 3% of E, E-S0 galaxies, 6% of S0s and 9% of S0/a galaxies were detected in emission. From a comparison of cluster and supercluster field galaxies, we conclude that the frequency of emission-line galaxies (ELGs; W_lambda >/= 20 angstroms) is similar for field and cluster early-type galaxies. A similar result has previously been obtain…
We present an unbiased method for evaluating the ranges of ages and metallicities which are allowed by the photometric properties of the stellar populations that dominate the light of early-type galaxies in clusters. The method is based on the analysis of morphologically-classified early-type galaxies in 17 clusters at redshifts 0.3<z<0.9 and in the nearby Coma cluster using recent stellar population synthesis models that span a wide range of metallicities. We confirm that metallicity effects must play a role in the origin of the slope of the color-magnitude relation for cluster early-type gal…
Color gradients in early-type galaxies contain valuable clues about their formation and evolutionary histories and mechanisms. We examine color gradients in 1,700 early-type galaxies in 159 galaxy clusters spanning a redshift range of 0.05 to 0.2. We find that color gradients strongly depend on the environment where galaxies reside, with steeper color gradients in poor rather than rich clusters. No dependence of color gradients on galaxy luminosity is found in either rich or poor clusters. The difference in color gradients can be explained by a change in the internal metallicity and/or an age …
A recent analysis of the IRAS database indicates that the massive star formation rates in early-type (Sa-Sab) spirals are comparable to the massive star formation rates in late-type spirals. $Hα$ imaging of some of the infrared luminous early-type spirals reveals two types of galaxies. One type shows clear signs of interaction, whereas the other type appears to host a nuclear starburst. The occurence of nuclear starbursts in early-type spirals may be related to the propensity for such galaxies to also host Seyfert nuclei. The evidence for interactions suggests that early-type spirals are evolv…
We study a unique proto-cluster of galaxies, the supergroup SG1120-1202. We quantify the degree to which morphological transformation of cluster galaxies occurs prior to cluster assembly in order to explain the observed early-type fractions in galaxy clusters at z=0. SG1120-1202 at z~0.37 is comprised of four gravitationally bound groups that are expected to coalesce into a single cluster by z=0. Using HST ACS observations, we compare the morphological fractions of the supergroup galaxies to those found in a range of environments. We find that the morphological fractions of early-type galaxies…
This paper presents data on the ENEARc subsample of the larger ENEAR survey of the nearby early-type galaxies. The ENEARc galaxies belong to clusters and were specifically chosen to be used for the construction of a D_n-sigma template. The ENEARc sample includes new measurements of spectroscopic and photometric parameters (redshift, velocity dispersion, line index Mg_2, and the angular diameter d_n) as well as data from the literature. New spectroscopic data are given for 229 cluster early-type galaxies and new photometry is presented for 348 objects. Repeat and overlap observations with exter…
We present spatially resolved kinematics and stellar population parameters for three low-luminosity galaxies in the NGC128 group obtained by means of 3D spectroscopy. We briefly discuss their evolutionary scenarii.
We present a study of the internal kinematics and stellar populations of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster based on integral-field spectroscopic observations with Gemini South GMOS and VLT-VIMOS. Seven galaxies in a luminosity range of -21.3 < M_B < -17.7 have been observed with these integral field units (IFU). As first results, velocity and line strength maps are presented for NGC 1427 and NGC 1419.
We report on a uniform comparative analysis of the fundamental parameters of early-type galaxies at z~1 down to a well defined magnitude limit (M_B\leq -20.0 in the field and M_B\leq -20.5 in the clusters). The changes in the M/L_B ratio from z~1 to today are larger for lower mass galaxies in all environments, and are similar in the field and in the clusters for galaxies with the same mass. By deriving ages from the M}/L_B ratio, we estimate the formation redshift for early-type galaxies as a function of galaxy mass and environment. We find that the age of early-type galaxies increases with ga…
Most gravitational lenses are early-type galaxies in relatively low density environments -- a ``field'' rather than a ``cluster'' population. We show that field early-type galaxies with 0 < z < 1, as represented by the lens galaxies, lie on the same fundamental plane as those in rich clusters at similar redshifts. We then use the fundamental plane to measure the combined evolutionary and K-corrections for early-type galaxies in the V, I and H bands. Only for passively evolving stellar populations formed at z > 2 (H_0=65 km/s Mpc, Omega_0=0.3, Lambda_0=0.7) can the lens galaxies be matched to t…
We have surveyed an optical/IR selected sample of nearby E/S0 galaxies with and without nuclear dust structures with the VLA at 3.6 cm to a sensitivity of 100 $μ$Jy. We can construct a Radio Luminosity Function (RLF) of these galaxies to ~10^19 W/Hz and find that ~50% of these galaxies have AGNs at this level. The space density of these AGNs equals that of starburst galaxies at this luminosity. Several dust-free galaxies have low luminosity radio cores, and their RLF is not significantly less than that of the dusty galaxies.
We derive the star formation histories of early-type galaxies at z = 1.2 in both low and high density environments. To this purpose, we compare the co-added spectroscopic and 8-9 band photometric data of 43 mass selected early-type galaxies in the massive cluster RDCS J1252.9-2927 and the GOODS/CDF-S field with a large grid of composite stellar population models. We find that the cluster early-type galaxies formed the bulk of their stars approximately 0.5 Gyr earlier than early-types in the field, whereas field early-types presumably finish forming their stellar content on a longer time scale.…
The luminosity dependence of kinematical and isophotal properties of elliptical galaxies is investigated using numerical simulations of galaxy merging, combined with semi-analytical models of hierarchical structure formation. Mergers of spiral galaxies as the only formation mechanism for elliptical galaxies can neither reproduce the kinematical and photometric properties of very massive elliptical galaxies nor the change from rotationally flattened disky to anisotropic boxy systems with increasing luminosity. We present numerical simulations showing that binary mergers of early-type galaxies o…
The slow evolution of the M/L ratios, colors, and line strengths of cluster early-type galaxies to z=1 suggests that their stars were formed at very high redshift. At the same time, morphological studies of distant clusters indicate significant evolution in the early-type galaxy population. Striking evidence for strong morphological evolution in clusters is the discovery of a large number of red merger systems in the cluster MS 1054-03 at z=0.83. The presence of these mergers is qualitatively consistent with predictions from hierarchical galaxy formation models, and is direct evidence against …
We present a spectroscopic sample of 48 early-type galaxies in the rich cluster Abell 2218 and 50 galaxies in Abell 2390. Since both samples are very similar, we combine them and investigate a total number of 98 early-type galaxies at z~0.2. A subsample of 34 galaxies with HST structural properties is used to construct the Fundamental Plane. Elliptical and S0 galaxies show a zeropoint offset of m_r~0.43 mag with respect to the local Coma FP. Both sub-samples, ellipticals and lenticulars, exhibit a similar, mild evolution and small scatter. The moderate amount of luminosity evolution is consist…
We have studied the population-density relation in very sparse environments, from poor clusters to isolated galaxies, and we find that early-type galaxies with a young stellar population are preferably found in the lowest density environments. We show a marginal indication that this effect is due to an enhancement of the stellar formation independent of the morphological segregation, but we failed to find any effect from the internal dynamics.
Growing evidence for the existence of two classes of ellipticals calls for a comparison of the properties of their globular cluster systems. I compiled information on the properties of over 50 globular cluster systems of faint and bright early-type galaxies, and investigated them in the light of the properties of the parent galaxies. The properties of globular cluster systems appear to separate into two classes rather than to follow continuous relations with their host galaxy properties. Globular cluster systems in faint, disky early-type galaxies with unresolved cores appear essentially unper…
The mid infrared emission of early type galaxies traces the presence of intermediate age stellar populations as well as even tiny amounts of ongoing star formation. Here we discuss high S/N Spitzer IRS spectra of a sample of Virgo early type galaxies, with particular reference to NGC 4435. We show that, by combining mid infrared spectroscopic observations with existing broad band fluxes, it is possible to obtain a very clean picture of the nuclear activity in this galaxy.
We use our new stellar population models, which include effects from variable element abundance ratios, to model the Ca4227 absorption line indices of early-type galaxies (Trager et al.), and to derive calcium element abundances. We find that calcium, although being an alpha-element, is depressed with respect to the other alpha-elements by up to a factor 2. This confirms quantitatively earlier speculations that early-type galaxies are calcium underabundant. We find a clear correlation between alpha/Ca ratio and central velocity dispersion, which implies that more massive galaxies are more calc…
Close examination of so-called "pseudobulges" in several early-type disk galaxies indicates that they are actually composite structures consisting of both a flattened, kinematically cool disklike structure ("disky pseudobulge") and a rounder, kinematically hot spheroidal structure ("classical bulge"). This indicates that pseudobulges, thought to form from internal secular evolution, and classical bulges, thought to form from rapid mergers, are not exclusive phenomena: some galaxies can have both.
It has been reported recently that there are some early-type spiral (Sa--Sab) galaxies having evident star-forming regions which concentrate in their own central 1-kpc. In such central region, is the mechanism of the star formation distinct from that in disks of spiral galaxies? To reveal this, we estimate the star formation efficiency (SFE) in this central 1-kpc star-forming region of some early-type spiral galaxies, taking account of the condition for this 1-kpc region to be self-gravitating. Using two indicators of present star formation rate (H$α$ and infrared luminosity), we estimate the …
The HST/ACS images of GOODS-South have been used to select a sample of early-type galaxies, based on morphology and on the Kormendy relation. The classification scheme does not use galaxy colours, hence it does not bias against young stellar populations. The 249 galaxies (i_AB<24) paint a complex formation picture. Their stellar populations show gradients which readily rule out a large range of ages among and within galaxies. On the other hand, there is a decrease in the comoving number density, which suggests a strong bias when comparing local and distant early-type galaxies. This bias can be…
In the light of the recent finding that nebular emission lines are commonly found in the inner regions of early-type galaxies, we evaluate their effect to stellar absorption-line indices. We derive analytical expressions for changes induced by the presence of nebular emission lines, both for atomic and molecular absorption-line indices. We find that the [NI] emission-line doublet at 5199 A can significantly affect Mgb line-strength measurements. For typical equivalent widths of the [NI] doublet in nuclei of early-type galaxies featuring nebular emission, the Mgb index is artificially enhanced …
