In this paper we continue studying the decay of unstable FZZT branes initiated in [1],[2]. The mass of tachyonic mode in this model can be chosen arbitrarily small and we use it as a perturbative parameter. In [2] a time-dependent boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) describing the decay process was studied and it was shown that in a certain sense this BCFT interpolates between two stationary BCFT's corresponding to the UV and IR fixed points of the associated RG flow. In the present work we find in the leading order vertex operators of the time-dependent BCFT. We identify the "in" and "out" vertex operators assigned to the UV and IR fixed points and compute the related Bogolyubov coefficients. We show that there is a codimension one subspace of the out-going states for which pair creation amplitudes are independent of the initial wave function of the tachyonic mode. We demonstrate that such amplitudes can be computed within the framework of first quantized open string theory via suitably defined string two-point functions. We also evaluate a three point function which we interpret as an amplitude for string triplet creation due to interaction. Some peculiarities of scattering amplitudes in the presence of tachyonic modes in the far past are discussed.
We study Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov-Teschner (FZZT) branes in Witten-Kontsevich topological gravity, which includes Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity as a special case. Adding FZZT branes to topological gravity corresponds to inserting determinant operators in the dual matrix integral and amounts to a certain shift of the infinitely many couplings of topological gravity. We clarify the perturbative interpretation of adding FZZT branes in the genus expansion of topological gravity in terms of a simple boundary factor and the generalized Weil-Petersson volumes. As a concrete illustration we…
We describe how the matrix integral of Imbimbo and Mukhi arises from a limit of the FZZT partition function in the double-scaled c=1 matrix model. We show a similar result for 0A and comment on subtleties in 0B.
We revisit the annulus amplitude of FZZT branes with general matter sectors (r,s) using the recent development of matrix model and minimal Liouville gravity. Following the boundary description of the 1-matrix model and bulk resonance transformation between primary operators we find the consistency of the brane decomposition into (1,1)-branes. We also investigate the corresponding results obtained directly from the minimal Liouville gravity and demonstrate the perfect agreement with the matrix results.
Minimal string theory has a number of FZZT brane boundary states; one for each Cardy state of the minimal model. It was conjectured by Seiberg and Shih that all branes in a minimal string theory could be expressed as a linear combination of the brane associated to the identity operator of the minimal model with complex shifts in the boundary cosmological constant. Subsequently it was found that this identification of FZZT branes does not hold exactly for some cylinder amplitudes but was spoiled by terms that are associated with vanishing worldsheet area and are therefore non-universal. In this…
We study boundary states in (p,q) minimal superstring theory, combining the explicit form of matter wave functions. Within the modular bootstrap framework, Cardy states of (p,q) minimal superconformal field theory are completely determined in both cases of the different supercharge combinations, and the remaining consistency checks in the super-Liouville case are also performed. Using these boundary states, we determine the explicit form of FZZT- and ZZ-brane boundary states both in type 0A and 0B GSO projections. Annulus mplitudes of FZZT branes are evaluated and principal FZZT branes are ide…
We study the annulus amplitudes of (p,q) minimal string theory. Focusing on the ZZ-FZZT annulus amplitude as a target-space probe of the ZZ brane, we use it to confirm that the ZZ branes are localized in the strong-coupling region. Along the way we learn that the ZZ-FZZT open strings are fermions, even though our theory is bosonic! We also provide a geometrical interpretation of the annulus amplitudes in terms of the Riemann surface M_{p,q} that emerges from the FZZT branes. The ZZ-FZZT annulus amplitude measures the deformation of M_{p,q} due to the presence of background ZZ branes; each kind…
We point out that insertions of matrix fields in (connected amputated) amplitudes of (generalized) Kontsevich models are given by covariant derivatives with respect to the Kontsevich moduli. This implies that correlators are sections of symmetric products of the (holomorphic) tangent bundle on the (complexified) moduli space of FZZT Liouville branes. We discuss the relation of Kontsevich parametrization of moduli space with that provided by either the (p,1) or the (1,p) boundary conformal field theories. It turns out that the Kontsevich connection captures the contribution of contact terms to …
In this paper we provide a universal description of the behavior of the basic operators of the Schwarzian theory in pure states. When the pure states are energy eigenstates, expectation values of non-extensive operators are thermal. On the other hand, in coherent pure states, these same operators can exhibit ergodic or non-ergodic behavior, which is characterized by elliptic, parabolic or hyperbolic monodromy of an auxiliary equation; or equivalently, which coadjoint Virasoro orbit the state lies on. These results allow us to establish an extended version of the eigenstate thermalization hypot…
We continue to investigate the physical interpretation of the Riemann zeta function as a FZZT brane partition function associated with a matrix/gravity correspondence begun in arxiv:0708.0645. We derive the master matrix of the $(2,1)$ minimal and $(3,1)$ minimal matrix model. We use it's characteristic polynomial to understand why the zeros of the FZZT partition function, which is the Airy function, lie on the real axis. We also introduce an iterative procedure that can describe the Riemann $Ξ$ function as a deformed minimal model whose deformation parameters are related to a Konsevich integr…
We investigate the physical interpretation of the Riemann zeta function as a FZZT brane partition function associated with a matrix/gravity correspondence. The Hilbert-Polya operator in this interpretation is the master matrix of the large N matrix model. Using a related function $Ξ(z)$ we develop an analogy between this function and the Airy function Ai(z) of the Gaussian matrix model. The analogy gives an intuitive physical reason why the zeros lie on a critical line. Using a Fourier transform of the $Ξ(z)$ function we identify a Kontsevich integrand. Generalizing this integrand to $n \times…
The resolvent operator plays a central role in matrix models. For instance, with utilizing the loop equation, all of the perturbative amplitudes including correlators, the free-energy and those of instanton corrections can be obtained from the spectral curve of the resolvent operator. However, at the level of non-perturbative completion, the resolvent operator is generally not sufficient to recover all the information from the loop equations. Therefore it is necessary to find a sufficient set of operators which provide the missing non-perturbative information. In this paper, we study generaliz…
We study the annulus amplitudes in the (2,4) minimal superstring theory using the continuum worldsheet approach. Our results reproduce the semiclassical behavior of the wavefunctions of FZZT-branes recently studied in hep-th/0412315 using the dual matrix model. We also study the multi-point functions of neutral FZZT-branes and find the agreement between their semiclassical limit and the worldsheet annulus calculation.
The exact FZZT brane partition function for topological gravity with matter is computed using the dual two-matrix model. We show how the effective theory of open strings on a stack of FZZT branes is described by the generalized Kontsevich matrix integral, extending the earlier result for pure topological gravity. Using the well-known relation between the Kontsevich integral and a certain shift in the closed-string background, we conclude that these models exhibit open/closed string duality explicitly. Just as in pure topological gravity, the unphysical sheets of the classical FZZT moduli space…
We study both bosonic and supersymmetric (p,q) minimal models coupled to Liouville theory using the ground ring and the various branes of the theory. From the FZZT brane partition function, there emerges a unified, geometric description of all these theories in terms of an auxiliary Riemann surface M_{p,q} and the corresponding matrix model. In terms of this geometric description, both the FZZT and ZZ branes correspond to line integrals of a certain one-form on M_{p,q}. Moreover, we argue that there are a finite number of distinct (m,n) ZZ branes, and we show that these ZZ branes are located a…
We study both the classical and the quantum target space of (p,q) minimal string theory, using the FZZT brane as a probe. By thinking of the target space as the moduli space of FZZT branes, parametrized by the boundary cosmological constant x, we see that classically it consists of a Riemann surface \CM_{p,q} which is a p-sheeted cover of the complex x plane. However, we show using the dual matrix model that the exact quantum FZZT observables exhibit Stokes' phenomenon and are entire functions of x. Along the way we clarify some points about the semiclassical limit of D-brane correlation funct…
Loop amplitudes in (p,q) minimal string theory are studied in terms of the continuum string field theory based on the free fermion realization of the KP hierarchy. We derive the Schwinger-Dyson equations for FZZT disk amplitudes directly from the W_{1+\infty} constraints in the string field formulation and give explicitly the algebraic curves of disk amplitudes for general backgrounds. We further give annulus amplitudes of FZZT-FZZT, FZZT-ZZ and ZZ-ZZ branes, generalizing our previous D-instanton calculus from the minimal unitary series (p,p+1) to general (p,q) series. We also give a detailed …
We explore the non-singlet sector of matrix quantum mechanics dual to $c=1$ Liouville theory. The non-singlets are obtained by adding $N_{f}\times N$ bi-fundamental fields in the gauged matrix quantum mechanics model as well as a one dimensional Chern-Simons term. The present model is associated with a spin-Calogero model in the presence of external magnetic field. In chiral variables, the low energy excitations-currents satisfy an ${SU(2N_{f})}_{\tilde{k}}$ Kǎc-Moody algebra at large $N$. We analyse the canonical partition function as well as two and four point correlation functions, discuss …
We interpret the matrix boundaries of the one matrix model (1MM) recently constructed by two of the authors as an outcome of a relation among FZZT branes. In the double scaling limit, the 1MM is described by the (2,2p+1) minimal Liouville gravity. These matrix operators are shown to create a boundary with matter boundary conditions given by the Cardy states. We also demonstrate a recursion relation among the matrix disc correlator with two different boundaries. This construction is then extended to the two matrix model and the disc correlator with two boundaries is compared with the Liouville …
We study FZZT-branes and open string amplitudes in (p,q) minimal string theory. We focus on the simplest boundary changing operators in two-matrix models, and identify the corresponding operators in worldsheet theory through the comparison of amplitudes. Along the way, we find a novel linear relation among FZZT boundary states in minimal string theory. We also show that the boundary ground ring is realized on physical open string operators in a very simple manner, and discuss its use for perturbative computation of higher open string amplitudes.
We study the boundary N=2 Liouville theory based on the ``modular bootstrap'' approach. As fundamental conformal blocks we introduce the ``extended characters'' that are defined as the proper sums over spectral flows of irreducible characters of the N=2 superconformal algebra (SCA) and clarify their modular transformation properties in models with rational central charges. We then try to classify the Cardy states describing consistent D-branes based on the modular data. We construct the analogues of ZZ-branes (hep-th/0101152), localized at the strong coupling region, and the FZZT-branes (hep-t…
The c=1 Liouville theory has received some attention recently as the Euclidean version of an exact rolling tachyon background. In an earlier paper it was shown that the bulk theory can be identified with the interacting c=1 limit of unitary minimal models. Here we extend the analysis of the c=1-limit to the boundary problem. Most importantly, we show that the FZZT branes of Liouville theory give rise to a new 1-parameter family of boundary theories at c=1. These models share many features with the boundary Sine-Gordon theory, in particular they possess an open string spectrum with band-gaps of…
This thesis discusses the worldsheet geometries in the (p,q) minimal model coupled to 2D euclidean Quantum Gravity with particular focus on non-compact geometries. We first calculate the FZZT-FZZT cylinder amplitudes for all pairs of Cardy matter states thereby generalizing the result obtained in arXiv:hep-th/0406030 and discuss the decompositions of the cylinder amplitudes in terms of solutions to the homogeneous Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We then show, that the principal ZZ boundary conditions in Liouville theory can be viewed as effective boundary conditions obtained by integrating out the ma…
We show how a boundary state different from the (1,1) Cardy state may be realised in the (m,m+1) minimal string by the introduction of an auxiliary matrix into the standard two hermitian matrix model. This boundary is a natural generalisation of the free spin boundary state in the Ising model. The resolvent for the auxiliary matrix is computed using an extension of the saddle-point method of Zinn-Justin to the case of non-identical potentials. The structure of the saddle-point equations result in a Seiberg-Shih like relation between the boundary states which is valid away from the continuum li…
The FZZT and ZZ branes in (p,p+1) minimal string theory are studied in terms of continuum loop equations. We show that systems in the presence of ZZ branes (D-instantons) can be easily investigated within the framework of the continuum string field theory developed by Yahikozawa and one of the present authors (hep-th/9609210). We explicitly calculate the partition function of a single ZZ brane for arbitrary p. We also show that the annulus amplitudes of ZZ branes are correctly reproduced.
We demonstrate that a Hermitian matrix model can be derived from level truncated open string field theory with Chan-Paton factors. The Hermitian matrix is coupled with a scalar and a $U(N)$ vector which are responsible for the D-brane at the tachyon vacuum. Effective potential for the scalar is evaluated both in finite and large $N$. Increase of potential height is observed in both examples. The large $N$ matrix integral is identified with a system of $N$ ZZ branes and a ghost FZZT brane.
We argue that topological matrix models (matrix models of the Kontsevich type) are examples of exact open/closed duality. The duality works at finite N and for generic `t Hooft couplings. We consider in detail the paradigm of the Kontsevich model for two-dimensional topological gravity. We demonstrate that the Kontsevich model arises by topological localization of cubic open string field theory on N stable branes. Our analysis is based on standard worldsheet methods in the context of non-critical bosonic string theory. The stable branes have Neumann (FZZT) boundary conditions in the Liouville …
We propose a paradigm for realizing the SYK model within string theory. Using the large $N$ matrix description of $c<1$ string theory, we show that the effective theory on a large number $Q$ of FZZT D-branes in $(p,1)$ minimal string theory takes the form of the disorder averaged SYK model with $J ψ^{p}$ interaction. The SYK fermions represent open strings between the FZZT branes and the ZZ branes that underly the matrix model. The continuum SYK dynamics arises upon taking the large $Q$ limit. We observe several qualitative and quantitative links between the SYK model and $(p,q)$ minimal strin…
We study open strings in the noncritical $c=1$ bosonic string theory compactified on a circle at self-dual radius. These strings live on D-branes that are extended along the Liouville direction ({\it FZZT} branes). We present explicit expressions for the disc two- and three-point functions of boundary operators in this theory, as well as the bulk-boundary two-point function. The expressions obtained are divergent because of resonant behaviour at self-dual radius. However, these can be regularised and renormalized in a precise way to get finite results. The boundary correlators are found to dep…
We determine all the correlators of the H3+ model on a disc with AdS2-brane boundary conditions in terms of correlators of Liouville theory on a disc with FZZT-brane boundary conditions. We argue that the Cardy-Lewellen constraints are weaker in the H3+ model than in rational conformal field theories due to extra singularities of the correlators, but strong enough to uniquely determine the bulk two-point function on a disc. We confirm our results by detailed analyses of the bulk-boundary two-point function and of the boundary two-point function. In particular we find that, although the target …
We compute the emission of closed string radiation from homogeneous rolling tachyons. For an unstable decaying D$p$-brane the radiated energy is infinite to leading order for $p\leq 2$ and finite for $p>2$. The closed string state produced by a decaying brane is closely related to the state produced by D-instantons at a critical Euclidean distance from $t=0$. In the case of a D0 brane one can cutoff this divergence so that we get a finite energy final state which would be the state that the brane decays into.
We clarify some aspects of the map between the c=1 string theory at self-dual radius and the topologically twisted cigar at level one. We map the ZZ and FZZT D-branes in the c=1 string theory at self dual radius to the localized and extended branes in the topological theory on the cigar. We show that the open string spectrum on the branes in the two theories are in correspondence with each other, and their two point correlators are equal. We also find a representation of an extended N=2 algebra on the worldsheet which incorporates higher spin currents in terms of asymptotic variables on the ci…
We present new rolling tachyon solutions describing the classical decay of D-branes. Our methods are simpler than those appearing in recent works, yet our results are exact in classical string theory. The role of pressure in the decay is studied using tachyon profiles with spatial variation. In this case the final state involves an array of codimension one D-branes rather than static, pressureless tachyon matter.
We use an argument analogous to that of Kachru, Pearson and Verlinde to argue that cascades in L^{a,b,c} quiver gauge theories always preserve the form of the quiver, and that all gauge groups drop at each step by the number M of fractional branes. In particular, we demonstrate that an NS5-brane that sweeps out the S^3 of the base of L^{a,b,c} destroys M D3-branes.
We study the tachyon and the RR field sourced by the $(m,n)$ ZZ D-branes in type 0 theories using three methods. We first use the mini-superspace approximation of the closed string wave functions of the tachyon and the RR scalar to probe these fields. These wave functions are then extended beyond the mini-superspace approximation using mild assumptions which are motivated by the properties of the corresponding wave functions in the mini-superspace limit. These are then used to probe the tachyon and the RR field sourced. Finally we study the space time fields sourced by the $(m,n)$ ZZ D-branes …
Type 0A string theory in the (2,4k) superconformal minimal model backgrounds, with background ZZ D-branes or R-R fluxes can be formulated non-perturbatively. The branes and fluxes have a description as threshold bound states in an associated one-dimensional quantum mechanics which has a supersymmetric structure, familiar from studies of the generalized KdV system. The relevant bound state wavefunctions in this problem have unusual asymptotics (they are not normalizable in general, and break supersymmetry) which are consistent with the underlying description in terms of open and closed string s…
Investigations for decay of unstable D-brane and rolling of accelerated D-brane dynamics have revealed that various proposed prescriptions give different result for spectral amplitudes and observables. Here, we study them with particular attention to unitarity and open-closed channel duality. From "ab initio" derivation in the open string channel, both in Euclidean and Lorentzian worldsheet approaches, we find heretofore overlooked contribution to the spectral amplitudes and obervables. The contribution is fortuitously absent for decay of unstable D-brane, but is present for rolling of acceler…
The dynamics (in light-cone time) of the tachyon on an unstable brane in the background of a dilaton linear along a null coordinate is a non-local reaction-diffusion type equation, which admits a travelling front solution. We analyze the (in-)stability of this solution using linearized perturbation theory. We find that the front solution obtained in singular perturbation method is stable. However, these inhomogenous solutions (unlike the homogenous solution) also have Lyapunov exponents corresponding to unstable modes around the (meta-)stable vacuum.
We elaborate on the decay of branes inside throat geometries that are supported by flux carrying charges opposite to the brane. Our main point is that such backgrounds necessarily have a local, possibly diverging, pile up of brane-charges dissolved in flux around the anti-brane due to the (fatal) attraction of the flux towards the brane. We explain that this causes enhanced brane-flux annihilation and is in tension with the idea that anti-branes can be used to construct meta-stable vacua. We argue that stable configurations -- if they at all exist -- are not obtainable within SUGR. The problem…
We construct the boundary ground ring in c < 1 open string theories with non-zero boundary cosmological constant (FZZT brane), using the Coulomb gas representation. The ring relations yield an over-determined set of functional recurrence equations for the boundary correlation functions, which involve shifts of the target space momenta of the boundary fields as well as the boundary parameters on the different segments of the boundary.
We develop the general formalism of string scattering from decaying D-branes in bosonic string theory. In worldsheet perturbation theory, amplitudes can be written as a sum of correlators in a grand canonical ensemble of unitary random matrix models, with time setting the fugacity. An approach employed in the past for computing amplitudes in this theory involves an unjustified analytic continuation from special integer momenta. We give an alternative formulation which is well-defined for general momenta. We study the emission of closed strings from a decaying D-brane with initial conditions pe…
We consider the inhomogeneous decay of an unstable D-brane of bosonic string theory in a linear dilaton background in a light-cone frame. At the lowest level, the dynamical equation that describes this process is a generalisation (that includes nonlocality and time delay) of a reaction-diffusion equation studied by Fisher (and others). We argue that the equation of motion of the cubic open string field theory is satisfied at least to the second order when we start with this `Fisher deformation', a marginal operator which has a simple pole term in its OPE. We also compute the one-point function…
An sp-brane can be viewed as the creation and decay of an unstable D(p+1)-brane. It is argued that the decaying half of an sp-brane can be described by a variant of boundary Liouville theory. The pair creation of open strings by a decaying s-brane is studied in the minisuperspace approximation to the Liouville theory. In this approximation a Hagedorn-like divergence is found in the pair creation rate, suggesting the s-brane energy is rapidly transferred into closed string radiation.
We consider the inhomogeneous decay of an unstable D-brane. The dynamical equation that describes this process (in light-cone time) is a variant of the non-linear reaction-diffusion equation that first made its appearance in the pioneering work of (Luther and) Fisher and appears in a variety of natural phenomena.
We consider the emission of two closed string tachyons from a decaying Dp-brane in bosonic string theory. We study the high energy limit of the emission amplitude by using an analogue to electrostatics. The case where the emitted strings have equal energies is analyzed in detail, and we obtain a relatively simple result for the emission amplitude. We identify expected poles for s- and t-channel emission. In the high energy limit, the amplitude decays exponentially (~e^{-2πω}) or faster in the energies ωof the closed strings.
We present an exact time-dependent solution to the effective D-brane world-volume theory which describes an inhomogeneous decay of a brane-antibrane system. We compute the quantum energy flux induced by the particle creation in this inhomogeneous and time-dependent background. We find that this calculation is essentially equivalent to that of the moving mirror system. In the initial stage, the energy flux turns out to be thermal with the temperature given by the inverse of the distance between the brane and the antibrane. Later it changes its sign and becomes a negative energy flux. Our result…
We present an exact representation for decaying ZZ-branes within the dual matrix model formulation of c=1 string theory. It is shown how to trade the insertion of decaying ZZ-branes for a shift of the closed string background. Our formlaism allows us to demonstrate that the conjectured world-sheet mechanism behind the open-closed dualities (summing over disc insertions) is realized here in a clear way. On the way we need to clarify certain infrared issues - insertion of ZZ-branes creates solitonic superselection sectors.
We study the {\em quantum} decay of D0-branes in two-dimensional 0B string theory. The quantum nature of the branes provides a natural cut-off for the closed string emission rate. We find exact quantum mechanical wavefunctions for the decaying branes and show how one can include the effects of the Fermi sea for any string coupling (Fermi energy).
We study the scattering of long strings in c = 1 string theory, both in the worldsheet description and in the non-singlet sector of the dual matrix quantum mechanics. From the worldsheet perspective, the scattering amplitudes of long strings are obtained from a decoupling limit of open strings amplitudes on FZZT branes, which we compute by integrating Virasoro conformal blocks along with structure constants of boundary Liouville theory. In particular, we study the tree level amplitudes of (1) a long string decaying by emitting a closed string, and (2) the scattering of a pair of long strings. …
The tremendous progress achieved through the study of black holes and branes suggests that their time dependent generalizations called Spacelike branes (S-branes) may prove similarly useful. An example of an established approach to S-branes is to include a string boundary interaction and we first summarize evidence for the death of open string degrees of freedom for the homogeneous rolling tachyon on a decaying brane. Then, we review how to extract the flat S-brane worldvolumes describing the homogeneous rolling tachyon and how large deformations correspond to creation of lower dimensional str…
We propose a formalism inspired by matrix models to compute open and closed topological string amplitudes in the B-model on toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. We find closed expressions for various open string amplitudes beyond the disk, and in particular we write down the annulus amplitude in terms of theta functions on a Riemann surface. We test these ideas on local curves and local surfaces, providing in this way generating functionals for open Gromov-Witten invariants in the spirit of mirror symmetry. In the case of local curves, we study the open string sector near the critical point which leads…
We further investigate the dimensional duality (D-duality) proposed in arXiv:0705.0550 by mainly focusing on the properties of D-branes in this background. We derive the world-sheet correspondence of static D-branes, and discuss the fate of non-static D-branes from the world-sheet viewpoint. The quantum string production with or without D-branes is also studied from the time-like Liouville theory. We find that the closed string production from the background is much larger than that from D-branes decaying into nothing.
We study the time evolution of the one-loop diagram in Sen's rolling tachyon background. We find that at least in the long cylinder case they grow rapidly at late time, due to the exponential growth of the timelike oscillator terms in the boundary state. This can also be interpreted as the virtual open string pair creation in the decaying brane. This behavior indicates a breakdown of this rolling tachyon solution at some point during the evolution. We also discuss the closed string emission from this one-loop diagram, and the evolution of a one-loop diagram connecting a decaying brane to a sta…
We examine the issue of the cosmological constant in the $many$ $inflating$ branes scenario, extending on two recent models by I.Oda and Randall-Sundrum. The exact solution in a closed form is found in the slow roll approximation of the radion. Defining an effective expansion rate, which depends on the location of each brane in the fifth dimension and demanding stability for this case we show that each positive tension brane has a localized, decaying cosmological constant (the opposite process applies to the negative energy branes [4]) . The reason is that the square of the effective expansion…
We present a novel scenario where matter in a spacetime originates from a decaying brane at the origin of time. The decay could be considered as a ``Big Bang''-like event at X^0=0. The closed string interpretation is a time-dependent spacetime with a semi-infinite time direction, with the initial energy of the brane converted into energy flux from the origin. The open string interpretation can be viewed as a string theoretic non-singular initial condition.
We consider a complex scalar field in (p+3)-dimensional bulk with a negative cosmological constant and study global vortices in two extra-dimensions. We reexamine carefully the coupled scalar and Einstein equations, and show that the boundary value of scalar amplitude at infinity of the extra-dimensions should be smaller than vacuum expectation value. The brane world has a cigar-like geometry with an exponentially decaying warp factor and a flat thick p-brane is embedded. Since a coordinate transformation identifies the obtained brane world as a black p-brane world bounded by a horizon, this s…
We study the Schwinger effect in a system of non-parallel D1-branes for the bosonic strings using the path integral formalism. We drive the string pair creation rate by calculating the one loop vacuum amplitude of the setup in presence of the background electric filed defined along one of the D1-branes. We find an angle dependent minimum value for the background field and show that the decaying of vacuum into string pairs takes place for the field above this value. It is shown that in $θ\rightarrow\fracπ{2}$ limit the vacuum becomes stable and thus no pair creation occurs.
Fluxes can decay via the nucleation of Brown-Teitelboim bubbles, but when the decaying fluxes induce D-brane charges this process must be accompanied with an annihilation of D-branes. This occurs via dynamics inside the bubble wall as was well described for (anti-)D3 branes branes annihilating against 3-form fluxes. In this paper we extend this to the other Dp branes with p smaller than seven. Generically there are two decay channels: one for the RR flux and one for the NSNS flux. The RR channel is accompanied by brane annihilation that can be understood from the Dp branes polarising into D(p+…
