We present an efficiently pumped single photon source based on single quantum dots (QD) embedded in photonic crystal nanocavities. Resonant excitation of a QD via a higher order cavity mode results in a 100$\times$ reduced optical power at the saturation onset of the photoluminescence, compared with excitation at the same frequency, after the cavity mode is detuned. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this excitation scheme leads to selective excitation of QDs coupled to the cavity by comparing photoluminescence and auto-correlation spectra for the same excitation wavelength with and without the cavity mode. This provides much cleaner conditions for single photon generation.
A theoretical model for the phonon-mediated off-resonant coupling between a quantum dot and a cavity, under resonant excitation of the quantum dot, is presented. We show that the coupling is caused by electron-phonon interaction in the quantum dot and is enhanced by the cavity. We analyze recently observed resonant quantum dot spectroscopic data by our theoretical model.
We report on the realization of a double barrier resonant tunneling diode for cavity polaritons, by lateral patterning of a one-dimensional cavity. Sharp transmission resonances are demonstrated when sending a polariton flow onto the device. We use a non-resonant beam can be used as an optical gate and control the device transmission. Finally we evidence distortion of the transmission profile when going to the high density regime, signature of polariton-polariton interactions.
We demonstrate off-resonant coupling between a single quantum dot and a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity, under resonant excitation of the quantum dot or the cavity. These results are consistent with previous descriptions of off-resonant coupling as an incoherent phonon-mediated process. The extension of this phenomenon to a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity presents interesting possibilities for coherent control of this interaction by tailoring the phonon density of states.
We present an off-resonant excitation scheme that realizes pronounced stationary inversion in a two level system. The created inversion exploits a cavity-assisted two photon resonance to enhance the multi-photon regime of nonlinear cavity QED and survives even in a semiconductor environment, where the cavity decay rate is comparable to the cavity-dot coupling rate. Exciton populations of greater than 0.75 are obtained in the presence of realistic decay and pure dephasing. Quantum trajectory simulations and quantum master equation calculations help elucidate the underlying physics and delineate…
In an optomechanical setup, the coupling between cavity and resonator can be increased by tuning them to the same frequency. We study this interaction between a carbon nanotube resonator and a radio-frequency circuit. In this resonant regime, the vacuum optomechanical coupling is enhanced by the DC voltage coupling the cavity and the mechanical resonator. Using the cavity to detect the nanotube's motion, we observe and simulate interference between mechanical and electrical oscillations. We measure the mechanical ring-down and show that further improvements to the system could enable measureme…
We employ a master equation approach to study the second-order quantum autocorrelation functions for up to two independent quantum dot excitons, coupled to an off-resonant cavity in a photonic crystal - single quantum dot system. For a single coupled off-resonant exciton, we observe novel oscillatory behaviour in the early-time dynamics of the cavity autocorrelation function, which leads to decreased antibunching relative to the exciton mode. With a second coupled exciton in the system, we find that the magnitude and the lifetime of these oscillations greatly increases, since the cavity is the…
We experimentally demonstrate that the Mollow triplet sidebands of a quantum dot strongly coupled to a cavity exhibit anomalous power induced broadening and enhanced emission when one sideband is tuned over the cavity frequency. We observe a nonlinear increase of the sideband linewidth with excitation power when the Rabi frequency exceeds the detuning between the quantum dot and the cavity, consistent with a recent theoretical model that accounts for acoustic phonon-induced processes between the exciton and the cavity. In addition, the sideband tuned to the cavity shows strong resonant emissio…
We study the spectrum of a one-dimensional Kitaev chain placed in a microwave cavity. In the off-resonant regime, the frequency shift of the cavity can be used to identify the topological phase transition of the coupled system. In the resonant regime, the topology of the system can be controlled via the microwave cavity occupation and, moreover, for a large number of photons (classical limit), the physics becomes similar to that of periodically-driven systems (Floquet insulators). We also analyze numerically a finite chain and show the existence of a degenerate subspace in the presence of the …
Recent experiments have demonstrated that for a quantum dot in an optical resonator off-resonant cavity mode emission can occur even for detunings of the order of 10 meV. We show that Coulomb mediated Auger processes based on additional carriers in delocalized states can facilitate this far off-resonant emission. Using a novel theoretical approach for a non-perturbative treatment of the Auger-assisted quantum-dot carrier recombination, we present numerical calculations of the far off-resonant cavity feeding rate and cavity mean photon number confirming efficient coupling at higher densities of…
We study the transport properties of a wire-dot system coupled to a cavity and a photon reservoir. Tuning the photon energy, Rabi-resonant states emerge and in turn resonant current peaks are observed. We demonstrate the effects of the cavity-photon reservoir coupling, the mean photon number in the reservoir, the electron-photon coupling and the photon polarization on the intraband transitions occurring between the Rabi-resonant states, and on the corresponding resonant current peaks. The Rabi-splitting can be controlled by the photon polarization and the electron-photon coupling strength. In …
The polarization dependence of nonequilibrium transitions in a multistable cavity-polariton system is studied under a nanosecond long resonant optical excitation at the normal and magic angle incidences with various polarizations of the pump beam. The temporal correlations between the frequency, intensity, and optical polarization of the intra-cavity field, which all undergo sharp threshold-like changes due to the spin dependent interaction of cavity polaritons, are visualized. The observed dynamics cannot be reproduced within the conventional semi-classical model based on the Gross-Pitaevskii…
Resonant photoelastic coupling in semiconductor nanostructures opens new perspectives for strongly enhanced light-sound interaction in optomechanical resonators. One potential problem, however, is the reduction of the cavity Q-factor induced by dissipation when the resonance is approached. We show in this letter that cavity-polariton mediation in the light-matter process overcomes this limitation allowing for a strongly enhanced photon-phonon coupling without significant lifetime reduction in the strongly-coupled regime. Huge optomechanical coupling factors in the PetaHz/nm range are envisaged…
We study the dynamics of molecular nanomagnets through a fully quantum mechanical model describing high-spin and high-anisotropy magnetic molecules subjected to a time-dependent magnetic field along the quantization axis, which continuously inverts the population of spin states. Crystals of molecular nanomagnets placed inside a resonant cavity interact with a quantized electromagnetic field. Relaxation of excited states takes place by means of spin-photon interaction, allowing stimulated emission of radiation and creating a maser effect.
We report vertically-illuminated, resonant cavity enhanced, graphene-Si Schottky photodetectors (PDs) operating at 1550nm. These exploit internal photoemission at the graphene-Si interface. To obtain spectral selectivity and enhance responsivity, the PDs are integrated with an optical cavity, resulting in multiple reflections at resonance, and enhanced absorption in graphene. Our devices have wavelength-dependent photoresponse with external (internal) responsivity~20mA/W (0.25A/W). The spectral-selectivity may be further tuned by varying the cavity resonant wavelength. Our devices pave the way…
We perform theoretical calculations to study steady-state electron transport in a double quantum dot, DQD, coupled to a quantized cavity photon field both in resonance and off-resonance regimes considering weak and strong coupling. In the resonant strong coupling regime, photon exchanges between the energy states of the DQD and the cavity are found reflecting multiple Rabi-resonances. The electron occupation of the states and the transport current can be smoothly increased by tuning the cavity-environment coupling strength. Making the system off-resonant, but still in the strong coupling regim…
We study a model for a pair of qubits which interact with a single off-resonant cavity mode and, in addition, exhibit a direct inter-qubit coupling. Possible realizations for such a system include coupled superconducting qubits in a line resonator as well as exciton states or electron spin states of quantum dots in a cavity. The emergent dynamical phenomena are strongly dependent on the relative energy scales of the inter-qubit coupling strength, the coupling strength between qubits and cavity mode, and the cavity mode detuning. We show that the cavity mode dispersion enables a measurement of …
We present a medium-dependent quantum optics approach to describe the influence of electron-acoustic phonon coupling on the emission spectra of a strongly coupled quantum-dot cavity system. Using a canonical Hamiltonian for light quantization and a photon Green function formalism, phonons are included to all orders through the dot polarizability function obtained within the independent Boson model. We derive simple user-friendly analytical expressions for the linear quantum light spectrum, including the influence from both exciton and cavity-emission decay channels. In the regime of semiconduc…
We demonstrate Resonant Tunneling Diodes, embedded in double metal cavities, strongly coupled to the cavity field, while maintaining their electronic properties. We measure the polariton dispersion and find a relative vacuum Rabi splitting of 16%, which explicitly qualifies for the strong-coupling regime. Additionally we show that electronic transport has a significant influence on the polaritons by modulating the coupling strength. The merge between electronic transport and polaritonic physics in our devices opens up a new aspect of cavity quantum electro-dynamics and integrated photonics.
We developed a theory of electron scattering by a short-range repulsive potential in a cavity. In the regime of ultrastrong electron coupling to the cavity electromagnetic field, the vacuum fluctuations of the field result in the dynamical stabilization of a quasistationary polariton state confined in the core of the repulsive potential. When the energy of a free electron coincides with the energy of the confined state, the extremely efficient resonant nonelastic scattering of the electron accompanied by emission of a cavity photon appears. This effect is discussed as a basis for possible free…
We investigate the influence of a quantized photon field on thermoelectric transport of electrons through a quantum wire embedded in a photon cavity. The quantum wire is connected to two electron reservoirs at different temperatures leading to a generation of a thermoelectric current. The transient thermoelectric current strongly depends on the photon energy and the number of photons initially in the cavity. Two different regimes are studied, off-resonant and resonant polarized fields, with photon energy smaller than, or equal to the energy spacing between some of the lowest states in the quan…
Transport properties of a quantum dot coupled to a photon cavity are investigated using a quantum master equation in the steady-state regime. In the off-resonance regime, when the photon energy is smaller than the energy spacing between the lowest electron states of the quantum dot, we calculate the current that is generated by photon replica states as the electronic system is pumped with photons.Tuning the electron-photon coupling strength, the photocurrent can be enhanced by the influences of the photon polarization, and the cavity-photon coupling strength of the environment. We show that th…
The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond has been established as a prime building block for quantum networks. However, scaling beyond a few network nodes is currently limited by low spin-photon entanglement rates, resulting from the NV center's low probability of coherent photon emission and collection. Integration into a cavity can boost both values via the Purcell effect, but poor optical coherence of near-surface NV centers has so far prevented their resonant optical control, as would be required for entanglement generation. Here, we overcome this challenge, and demonstrate resonant addr…
Cavity-coupled nanoelectric devices hold great promise for quantum technology based on coupling between electron-spins and photons. In this study, we approach the description of these effects through the modeling of a nanodevice using a quantum master equation. We assume a quantum ring is coupled to two external leads with different temperatures and embedded in a cavity with a single photon mode. Thermospin transport of the ring-cavity system is investigated by tuning the Rashba coupling constant and the electron-photon coupling strength. In the absence of the cavity, the temperature gradient …
A plasmonic coupled-cavity system, which consists of a quarter-wave coupler cavity, a resonant Fabry-Perot detector nanocavity, and an off-resonant reflector cavity, is used to enhance the localization of surface plasmons in a plasmonic detector. The coupler cavity is designed based on transmission line theory and wavelength scaling rules in the optical regime, while the reflector cavity is derived from off-resonant resonator structures to attenuate transmission of plasmonic waves. We observed strong coupling of the cavities in simulation results, with an 86% improvement of surface plasmon loc…
We consider an array of coupled cavities with staggered inter-cavity couplings, where each cavity mode interacts with an atom. In contrast to large-size arrays with uniform-hopping rates where the atomic dynamics is known to be frozen in the strong-hopping regime, we show that resonant atom-field dynamics with significant energy exchange can occur in the case of staggered hopping rates even in the thermodynamic limit. This effect arises from the joint emergence of an energy gap in the free photonic dispersion relation and a discrete frequency at the gap's center. The latter corresponds to a bo…
We investigate the effectiveness of a microwave cavity as a mediator of interactions between two resonant exchange (RX) qubits in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) over long distances, limited only by the extension of the cavity. Our interaction model includes the orthonormalized Wannier orbitals constructed from Fock-Darwin states under the assumption of a harmonic QD confinement potential. We calculate the qubit-cavity coupling strength in a Jaynes Cummings Hamiltonian, and find that dipole transitions between two states with an asymmetric charge configuration constitute the relevant RX quoit…
We report observation of the nonlinear Meissner effect (NLME) in Nb films by measuring the resonance frequency of a planar superconducting cavity as a function of the magnitude and the orientation of a parallel magnetic field. Use of low power rf probing in films thinner than the London penetration depth, significantly increases the field for the vortex penetration onset and enables NLME detection under true equilibrium conditions. The data agree very well with calculations based on the Usadel equations. We propose to use NLME angular spectroscopy to probe unconventional pairing symmetries in …
The thermoelectric effect in a quantum dot system connected to two electron reservoirs in the presence of a photon cavity is investigated using a quantum master equation in the steady-state regime. If a quantized photon field is applied to the quantum dot system, an extra channel, the photon replica states, are formed leading to a generation of a photon-induced thermoelectric current. We observe that the photon replica states contribute to the transport irrespective of the direction of the thermal gradient. In the off-resonance regime, when the photon energy is smaller than the energy differen…
We study electron transport through double quantum dots (DQD) coupled to a cavity with a single photon mode. The DQD is connected to two electron reservoirs, and the total system is under an external perpendicular magnetic field. The DQD system exhibits a complex multi-level energy spectrum. By varying the photon energy, several anti-crossings between photon dressed electron states of the DQD-cavity system are found at low strength of the magnetic field. The anti-crossings are identified as multiple Rabi resonances arising from the photon exchange between these states. As the results, a dip in…
We study the optical emission from single semiconductor quantum dots coupled to the optical modes of photonic crystal nanocavities. For dots that are both spectrally and spatially coupled, auto-correlation measurements reveal efficient single photon generation, with a drastically reduced lifetime due to the Purcell-effect. However, the multi-photon emission probability is enhanced compared to the same QD transition when it is detuned from the cavity mode by controlled $N_2$-deposition. This indicates the presence of an emission background that is shown to be related to the dot using photon cro…
Microwave cavities with high quality factors enable coherent coupling of distant quantum systems. Virtual photons lead to a transverse exchange interaction between qubits, when they are non-resonant with the cavity but resonant with each other. We experimentally probe the inverse scaling of the inter-qubit coupling with the detuning from a cavity mode and its proportionality to the qubit-cavity interaction strength. We demonstrate that the enhanced coupling at higher frequencies is mediated by multiple higher-harmonic cavity modes. Moreover, in the case of resonant qubits, the symmetry propert…
A network of quantum-mechanical systems showing long lived phase coherence of its quantum states could be used for processing quantum information. As with classical information processing, a quantum processor requires information bits (qubits) that can be independently addressed and read out, long-term memory elements to store arbitrary quantum states, and the ability to transfer quantum information through a coherent communication bus accessible to a large number of qubits. Superconducting qubits made with scalable microfabrication techniques are a promising candidate for the realization of a…
We propose a way to increase the lifetime of two-dimensional direct excitons and show the possibility to observe their macroscopically coherent state at high temperatures. For a single GaAs quantum well embedded in photonic layered heterostructures with subwavelength period, we predict the exciton radiative decay to be strongly suppressed. Quantum hydrodynamic approach is used to study the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless crossover in a finite exciton system with intermediate densities. Below the estimated critical temperatures, drastic growth of the correlation length is shown to be accompanie…
Pure dephasing is widely used in the literature to explain experimental observations on quantum dots in cavities. In many cases, its use is not enough and extra terms need to be "fictitiously" added to accomplish with the observed data as it is the case of cavity pumping of an unknown source. Here we controvert the validity of the pure dephasing mechanism as a source of decoherence and present a theoretical study based on the phonon-mediated coupling that can explain the emission spectrum and photon auto- and cross-correlation results in recent experiments without the need of any artificial as…
This work discusses theoretically the behavior of a microwave cavity and a Cooper pair beam splitter (CPS) coupled non-resonantly. The cavity frequency pull is modified when the CPS is resonant with a microwave excitation. This provides a direct way to probe the coherence of the Cooper pair splitting process. More precisely, the cavity frequency pull displays an anticrossing whose specificities can be attributed unambiguously to coherent Cooper pair injection. This work illustrates that microwave cavities represent a powerful tool to investigate current transport in complex nanocircuits.

Indistinguishable single photons are necessary for quantum information processing applications. Resonant or quasiresonant excitation of single quantum dots provides greater single photon indistinguishability than incoherent pumping, but is also more challenging experimentally. Here, we demonstrate high signal to noise quasiresonant excitation of InP/InGaP quantum dots. The excitation is provided via second harmonic generated from a telecommunications wavelength laser resonant with the fundamental mode of a photonic crystal cavity, fabricated at twice the quantum dot transition wavelength. The …
