A theory describing above-threshold ionization of atoms and ions in a strong electromagnetic field is presented. It is based on the widely known strong field approximation and incorporates the Coulomb interaction between the photoelectron and the nucleus using the method of complex classical trajectories. A central result of the theory is the Coulomb-corrected ionization amplitude whose evaluation requires little extra numerical effort. By comparing our predictions with the results of ab initio numerical solutions for two examples we show that the new theory provides a significant improvement of the Coulomb-free strong field approximation. For the case of above-threshold ionization in elliptically polarized fields a comparison with available experimental data is also presented.
It is shown that the criticism of Voitkiv [Phys. Rev. A 74, 027403 (2006)] is based on one assumption, which is false for an ionized electron, initially bound by the Coulomb potential, in a strong circularly polarized laser field. A certain new Coulomb correction to the Volkov wavefunction is proposed.
We perform a detailed analysis of how the interplay between the residual binding potential and a strong laser field influences above-threshold ionization (ATI), employing a semi-analytical, Coulomb-corrected strong-field approximation (SFA) in which the Coulomb potential is incorporated in the electron propagation in the continuum. We find that the Coulomb interaction lifts the degeneracy of some SFA trajectories, and we identify a set of orbits which, for high enough photoelectron energies, may be associated with rescattering. Furthermore, by performing a direct comparison with the standard S…
The domain of validity of the Coulomb-Corrected Strong Field Approximation (CCSFA) is going to be analyzed in relation to the semi-classical dynamics of electrons during ionization of hydrogen-like targets. Our analysis is limited to ionization driven by Ti-sapphire laser pulses with intensities up to roughly 10$^{14}$ Wcm$^{-2}$. For such parameters, the effects related to radiation pressure are small and the laser field can be described in the dipole approximation. By applying the Magnus expansion for the exact retarded electron propagator we obtain an {\it effective action} which is free of…
We investigate the role of the Coulomb interaction in strong field processes. We find that the Coulomb field of the ion makes its presence known even in highly intense laser fields, in contrast to the assumptions of the strong field approximation. The dynamics of the electron after ionization is analyzed with four models for an arbitrary laser polarization: the Hamiltonian model in the dipole approximation, the strong field approximation, the Coulomb-corrected strong field approximation and the guiding center. These models illustrate clearly the Coulomb effects, in particular Coulomb focusing …
Aiming at the investigation of above-threshold ionization in super-strong laser fields with highly charged ions, we develop a Coulomb-corrected strong field approximation (SFA). The influence of the Coulomb potential of the atomic core on the ionized electron dynamics in the continuum is taken into account via the eikonal approximation, treating the Coulomb potential perturbatively in the phase of the quasi-classical wave function of the continuum electron. In this paper the formalism of the Coulomb-corrected SFA for the nonrelativistic regime is discussed employing velocity and length gauge. …
Using the semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization we investigate the interference structures emerging in strong-field photoelectron holography, taking into account the Coulomb potential of the atomic core. For every kind of the interference pattern predicted by the three-step model, we calculate the corresponding structure in the presence of the Coulomb field, showing that the Coulomb potential modifies the interference patterns significantly.
The analytic expression for the cross section of low-energy electron scattering in a strong Coulomb field is obtained. It is shown that in a wide energy region this cross section differs essentially from that obtained in the first Born approximation.
Non-dipole effects in strong-field photoelectron momentum spectra have been revealed experimentally [C.T.L. Smeenk et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 193002 (2011); A. Ludwig et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 243001 (2014)]. For certain laser parameters and photoelectron momenta the spectra were found to be shifted against the laser propagation direction whereas one would naively assume that the radiation pressure due to the $\vec{v}\times\vec{B}$-force pushes electrons always in propagation direction. Only the interplay between Lorentz and Coulomb force may give rise to such counterintuitive dynamics.…
We develop a relativistic Coulomb-corrected strong field approximation (SFA) for the investigation of spin effects at above-threshold ionization in relativistically strong laser fields with highly charged hydrogen-like ions. The Coulomb-corrected SFA is based on the relativistic eikonal-Volkov wave function describing the ionized electron laser-driven continuum dynamics disturbed by the Coulomb field of the ionic core. The SFA in different partitions of the total Hamiltonian is considered. The formalism is applied for direct ionization of a hydrogen-like system in a strong linearly polarized l…
Signatures of the Coulomb corrections in the photoelectron momentum distribution during laser-induced ionization of atoms or ions in tunneling and multiphoton regimes are investigated analytically in the case of an one-dimensional problem. High-order Coulomb corrected strong-field approximation is applied, where the exact continuum state in the S-matrix is approximated by the eikonal Coulomb-Volkov state including the second-order corrections to the eikonal. Although, without high-order corrections our theory coincides with the known analytical R-matrix (ARM) theory, we propose a simplified pr…
Despite its long standing usefulness for the analysis of various processes in intense laser fields, it is well-known that the so-called strong-field KFR or SFA ansatz does not account for the final-state Coulomb interaction. Due to its importance for the ubiquitous ionisation process, numerous heuristic attempts have been made during the last several decades to account for the final state Coulomb interaction with in the SFA. Also to this end an ad hoc model with the so-called Coulomb-Volkov final state was introduced a long time ago. However, till now, no systematic strong-field S-matrix expan…
We study ionization of atoms in strong elliptically-polarized laser fields. We focus on the physical origin of the offset angle in the photoelectron momentum distribution and its possible relation to a specific time. By developing a model which is based on strong-field approximation and considers the classical Coulomb scattering, we are able to quantitatively explain recent attoclock experiments in a wide region of laser and atomic parameters. The offset angle can be understood as arising from the scattering of the electron by the ionic potential when the electron exits the laser-Coulomb-forme…
We present a simple quantum mechanical model to describe Coulomb explosion of H$_2^+$ by short, intense, infrared laser pulses. The model is based on the length gauge version of the molecular strong-field approximation and is valid for pulses shorter than 50 fs where the process of dissociation prior to ionization is negligible. The results are compared with recent experimental results for the proton energy spectrum [I. Ben-Itzhak et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 073002 (2005), B. D. Esry et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 013003 (2006)]. The predictions of the model reproduce the profile of the spectru…
An approximation-free, numerically efficient algorithm is presented for the Hamiltonian eigen-states of the Stark-Hydrogen problem describing a quantum particle exposed to the central Coulomb force and a homogeneous external field. As an example of application in a state-expansion with continuous energy, we calculate the time-dependent wavefunction of an electron tunneling from a hydrogen atom suddenly exposed to an external electric field.
A new variational basis with well-behaved local approximation properties and multiple output is proposed for Coulomb systems. The trial function has proper behaviour at all Coulomb centres. Nonlinear asymptotic parameters are introduced softly: they do not destroy the self-optimized local behaviour of the wave function at vanishing interparticle distances. The diagonalization of the Hamiltonian on a finite Hilbert subspace gives a number of meaningful eigenvalues. Thus together with the ground state some excited states are also reliably approximated. For three-body systems all matrix elements …
We perform a detailed analysis of the different types of orbits in the Coulomb Quantum Orbit Strong-field Approximation (CQSFA), ranging from direct to those undergoing hard collisions. We show that some of them exhibit clear counterparts in the standard formulations of the strong-field approximation for direct and rescattered above-threshold ionization, and show that the standard orbit classification commonly used in Coulomb-corrected models is over-simplified. We identify several types of rescattered orbits, such as those responsible for the low-energy structures reported in the literature, …
We consider the interaction of hydrogen-like atoms with a strong laser field and show that the strong field approximation and all its variants may be grouped into a set of families of approximation schemes. This is done by introducing an ansatz describing the electron wave packet as the sum of the initial state wave function times a phase factor and a function which is the perturbative solution in the Coulomb potential of an inhomogeneous time-dependent Schrödinger equation. It is the phase factor that characterizes a given family. In each of these families, the velocity and length gauge versi…
The process of $e^+e^-$ production in the superposition of a Coulomb and a strong laser field is considered. The pair production rate integrated over the momentum and summed over the spin projections of one of the particles is derived exactly in the parameters of the laser field and in the Born approximation with respect to the Coulomb field. The case of a monochromatic circularly polarized laser field is considered in detail. A very compact analytical expression of the pair production rate and its dependence on the polarization of one of the created particles is obtained in the quasiclassical…
The role of Coulomb focusing in above-threshold ionization in an elliptically polarized mid-infrared strong laser field is investigated within a semiclassical model incorporating tunneling and Coulomb field effects. It is shown that Coulomb focusing up to moderate ellipticity values is dominated by multiple forward scattering of the ionized electron by the atomic core that creates a characteristic low-energy structure in the photoelectron spectrum and is responsible for the peculiar energy scaling of the ionization normalized yield along the major polarization axis. At higher ellipticities, th…
We consider the electron-positron pair production by a photon in Coulomb field near threshold. We obtain the analytical results for the particle energy spectrum and angular distribution exactly in the parameter $Ze^2/\hbar v$. We show that Furry-Sommerfeld-Maue approximation for the wave functions used by Nishina, Tomonaga and Sakata is not sufficient and leads to wrong results.
We find that Coulomb focusing persists even when the Coulomb field is barely noticeable compared with the laser field. Delayed recollisions proliferate in this regime and bring back energy slightly above the 3.17 U_p high-harmonic cutoff, in stark contradiction with the Strong Field Approximation. We investigate the nonlinear-dynamical phase space structures which underlie this dynamics. It is found that the energetic delayed recollisions are organized by a reduced number of periodic orbits and their invariant manifolds.
