We explore tidal interactions of a galactic disk with Toomre parameter Q ~ 2 embedded in rigid halo/bulge with a point mass companion moving in a prescribed parabolic orbit. Tidal interactions produce well-defined spiral arms and extended tidal features such as bridge and tail that are all transient, but distinct in nature. In the extended disks, strong tidal force is able to lock the perturbed epicycle phases of the near-side particles to the perturber, shaping them into a tidal bridge that corotates with the perturber. A tidal tail develops at the opposite side as strongly-perturbed, near-side particles overtake mildly-perturbed, far-side particles. The tail is essentially a narrow material arm with a roughly logarithmic shape, dissolving with time because of large velocity dispersions. Inside the disks where tidal force is relatively weak, on the other hand, a two-armed logarithmic spiral pattern emerges due to the kinematic alignment of perturbed particle orbits. While self-gravity makes the spiral arms a bit stronger, the arms never become fully self-gravitating, wind up progressively with time, and decay after the peak almost exponentially in a time scale of ~ 1 Gyr. The arm pattern speed varying with both radius and time converges to Omega-kappa/2 at late time, suggesting that the pattern speed of tidally-driven arms may depend on radius in real galaxies. We present the parametric dependences of various properties of tidal features on the tidal strength, and discuss our findings in application to tidal spiral arms in grand-design spiral galaxies. We discuss the transport of angular momentum induced by tidal effects in a disk surrounding a star in a pre-main sequence binary system. We consider the effect of both density and bending waves. Although tidal effects are important for truncating protostellar disks and for determining their size, it is unlikely that tidally-induced angular momentum transport plays a dominant role in the evolution of protostellar disks. Where the disk is magnetized, transport of angular momentum is probably governed by MHD turbulence. In a non self-gravitating laminar disk, the amount of transport provided by t…
The effects of binary tidal forces on transport within an accretion disk are studied with a time-dependent hydrodynamical model of a two-dimensional isothermal accretion disk. Tidal forces quickly truncate the accretion disk to radii of order half the average radius of the Roche lobe, and excite a two-armed spiral wave that remains stationary in the rotating reference frame of the binary system. We measure an effective alpha of order 0.1 near the outer edge of the disk in all of our models, independent of the mass ratio, Mach number, and radial density profile. However, in cold disks with high…
We present VLT observations of the interacting system AM 1353-272. Using the FORS2 instrument, we studied the kinematics of the ionized gas along its prominent tidal tails and discovered strikingly large velocity gradients associated with seven luminous tidal knots. These kinematical structures cannot be caused by streaming motion and most likely do not result from projection effects. More probably, instabilities in the tidal tails have lead to the formation of kinematically decoupled objects which could be the progenitors of self-gravitating Tidal Dwarf Galaxies.
We have studied a sample of 24 edge-on interacting galaxies and compared them to edge-on isolated galaxies, to investigate the effects of tidal interaction on disk thickening. We found that the ratio h/z of the radial exponential scalelength h to the scale height z is about twice smaller for interacting galaxies. This is found to be due both to a thickening of the plane, and to a radial stripping or shrinking of the stellar disk. If we believe that any galaxy experienced a tidal interaction in the past, we must conclude that continuous gas accretion and subsequent star formation can bring back…
We investigate the tilting and warping of galactic disks in response to tidal torquing. The strength of the torque is determined from cosmological N-body simulations. We find the tidal torques to be dominated by substructure in the galactic halo, such as dwarf satellites, and by a misalignment between the disk angular momentum and the figure axes of the dark matter halo. The radial dependence of the torque can approximated by a power law of index -2.5. A massless disk subjected to such a torque develops a trailing warp similar to those seen in a large number of disk galaxies, i.e. the inner re…
Geometrically thick disks may form after tidal disruption events, and rapid accretion may lead to short flares followed by long-term, lower-level emission. Using a novel accretion disk code which relies primarily on global conservation laws and the assumption that viscosity is everywhere positive, a broad range of physically allowed evolutionary sequences of thick disks is investigated. The main result is that accretion in the thick disk phase can consume only a fraction of the initial disk material before the disk cools and becomes thin. This fraction is ~0.5-0.9 for disruptions around 10^6 t…
Several interacting systems exhibit at the tip of their long tidal tails massive condensations of atomic hydrogen, which may be the progenitors of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies. Because, quite often, these tails are observed edge-on, projection effects have been claimed to account for the large HI column densities measured there. Here we show that determining the velocity field all along the tidal features, one may disentangle projection effects along the line of view from real bound structures. Due to its large field of view, high spectral and 2D spatial resolutions, Fabry-Perot observations of the io…
The discovery of now about 20 extrasolar planets orbiting solar-type stars with properties quite different from those in our Solar System has raised many questions about the formation and evolution of planets. The tidal interaction between the planet and the surrounding disk determines the orbital properties and the mass of the planet. We have performed numerical computations of a planet embedded in a protoplanetary disk and found that for typical values of the viscosity the planet may easily grow upto ten Jupiter masses. New results on the mass evolution and the migration of the planet are pr…
We use a set of high-resolution N-body simulations of binary galaxy mergers to show that the morphologies of the tidal features that are seen around a large fraction of nearby, massive ellipticals in the field, cannot be reproduced by equal-mass dissipationless mergers; rather, they are well explained by the accretion of disk-dominated galaxies. In particular, the arm- and looplike morphologies of the observed tidal debris can only be produced by the kinematically cold material of the disk components of the accreted galaxies. The tidal features that arise from such "cold-accretion" events onto…
We consider the dynamics of a protostellar disk surrounding a star in a circular-orbit binary system. Our aim is to determine whether, if the disk is initially tilted with respect to the plane of the binary orbit, the inclination of the system will increase or decrease with time. The problem is formulated in the binary frame in which the tidal potential of the companion star is static. We consider a steady, flat disk that is aligned with the binary plane and investigate its linear stability with respect to tilting or warping perturbations. The dynamics is controlled by the competing effects of…
We study the formation of tidal tails in pairs of merging disk galaxies with structural properties motivated by current theories of cold dark matter (CDM) cosmologies. In a recent study, Dubinski, Mihos & Hernquist (1996) showed that the formation of prominent tidal tails can be strongly suppressed by massive and extended dark haloes. For the large halo-to-disk mass ratio expected in CDM cosmologies their sequence of models failed to produce strong tails like those observed in many well-known pairs of interacting galaxies. In order to test whether this effect can constrain the viability of CDM…
We present deep optical B, V, R images of a sample of 10 interacting systems which were selected for their resemblance to disturbed galaxies at high redshift. Photometry is performed on knots in the tidal features of the galaxies. We calculate a grid of evolutionary synthesis models with two metallicities and various burst strengths for systems consisting of some fraction of the stellar population of a progenitor spiral plus starburst. By comparison with two-color diagrams we interpret the photometric data, select from a total of about 100 condensations 36 star-forming objects that are located…
We present a detailed analysis of the properties of warps and tidally-triggered perturbations perpendicular to the plane of 47 interacting/merging edge-on spiral galaxies. The derived parameters are compared with those obtained for a sample of 61 non-interacting edge-on spirals. The entire optical (R-band) sample used for this study was presented in two previous papers. We find that the scale height of disks in the interacting/merging sample is characterized by perturbations on both large (~disk cut-off radius) and short (~z0) scales, with amplitudes of the order of 280pc and 130pc on average,…
We have reported in a previous paper (AAS 116, 417, 1996) B, V and I band photometric data for a sample of 24 edge-on interacting spiral galaxies, together with a control sample of 7 edge-on isolated galaxies. We discuss here the main result found in this study: the ratio h/z of the radial exponential scalelength h to the constant scaleheight z is about twice smaller for interacting galaxies. This is found to be due both to a thickening of the plane, and to a radial stripping or shrinking of the stellar disk. If we believe that any galaxy experienced a tidal interaction in the past, we must co…
The tidal disruption of a star by a supermassive black hole is expected to lead to a short bright flare followed by an extended period of low-level emission. Existing models of the late-time accretion of the stellar debris via a thin disk imply that the Galactic Center source Sgr A* should be brighter than currently observed by several orders of magnitude. A similar problem exists for M31 and M32. This problem could be avoided if thin disk accretion transitions to low radiative efficiency accretion (e.g., ADAF, CDAF) at low accretion rates (via ``evaporation'' of the thin disk). Alternatively,…
We investigate the linear tidal perturbation of a viscous Keplerian disk by a companion star orbiting in a plane inclined to the disk. We consider m=1 perturbations with odd symmetry with respect to the z=0 midplane. Since the response of a viscous disk is not in phase with the perturbing potential, a tidal torque is exerted on the disk, resulting in a decrease of its angular momentum. This tidal torque is found to be comparable to the horizontal viscous stress acting on the background flow when the perturbed velocities in the disk are on the order of the sound speed. If these velocities remai…
The propagation and evolution of planet-generated density waves in protoplanetary disks is considered. The evolution of waves, leading to the shock formation and wake dissipation, is followed in the weakly nonlinear regime. The local approach of Goodman & Rafikov (2001) is extended to include the effects of surface density and temperature variations in the disk as well as the disk cylindrical geometry and nonuniform shear. Wave damping due to shocks is demonstrated to be a nonlocal process spanning a significant fraction of the disk. Torques induced by the planet could be significant drivers o…
We present low-resolution spectroscopy of the ionized gas in a sample of optical knots located along the tidal features of 14 interacting galaxies and previously selected as candidates of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs). From redshift measurements, we are able to confirm their physical association with the interacting system in almost all cases. For most knots, the oxygen abundance does not depend on the blue luminosity. The average, 12+log(O/H)=8.34+-0.20, is typical of TDGs and comparable to that measured in the outer stellar disk of spirals from which they were formed. A few knots showing low m…
We present Gemini optical spectroscopy of three young star clusters in the western tidal tail of NGC3256. Compact star clusters (as opposed to dwarf-galaxy candidates) in tidal tails are rare, with these three clusters the first for which detailed quantitative spectroscopy has ever been obtained. We find that two of these clusters appear to be coeval, while the third is approximately two times older~200 Myr vs.~80 Myr). All three clusters are massive (1-3 x 10^5 msun) and appear to be of roughly solar metallicity. Additionally, the three clusters appear to be relatively large (R_eff = 10-20 pc…
Among the various phenomena observed in interacting galaxies is the ejection due to tidal forces of material into the intergalactic medium and its subsequent rearranging which can lead to the formation of self-gravitating tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs). We investigate this process with a detailed multiwavelength study of the interacting system Arp 245 (NGC 2992/3) and a numerical model of the collision. The system is observed at an early stage of the interaction, about 100 Myr after perigalacticon, though at a time when tidal tails have already developed. Our HI map shows prominent counterparts t…
(Abridged) We investigate how galactic disks react to external tidal torques. We calculate the strength and radial dependence of torques on disks that arise from a misalignment between the disk and the main axis system of a flattened dark matter halo. We find that except for in the very inner regions, the torques are well-described by a power law of the form $τ\propto r^{-2.5}$. The magnitude of the torque is large enough for the entire disk to react to the torque in less than the Hubble time. We demonstrate analytically that disks which are originally located in the $xy$-plane and which are s…
We explore the possibility that extended disks, such as that recently discovered in M31, are the result of a single dwarf (10^9--10^10 Msun) satellite merger. We carry out N-body simulations of dwarf NFW halos with embedded spheriodal stellar components on co-planar, prograde orbits in a M31-like host galaxy. As the orbit decays due to dynamical friction and the system is disrupted, the stellar particles form an extended, exponential disk-like structure that spans the radial range 30--200 kpc once they have relaxed. The disk scale-length correlates with the initial extent of the stellar compon…
We use numerical simulations to investigate the orientation of the angular momentum axis of disk galaxies relative to their surrounding large scale structure. We find that this is closely related to the spatial configuration at turnaround of the material destined to form the galaxy, which is often part of a coherent two-dimensional slab criss-crossed by filaments. The rotation axis is found to align very well with the intermediate principal axis of the inertia momentum tensor at this time. This orientation is approximately preserved during the ensuing collapse, so that the rotation axis of the…
We examine the effect of different dark matter halo potentials on the morphology and kinematics of tidals tails in a merger model of NGC 7252. We find that models of merging galaxies with low halo masses of Mh = 4-8 M{disk+bulge} (Mdb) can fit the observed morphology and kinematics of the NGC 7252 tails while galaxies with high mass halos (Mh = 16-32 Mdb) fail in this respect. In high mass models, the deep potential only allows weakly bound disk material (stars or gas) at R > 5 disk scale lengths to be ejected in tidal tails which tend to fall back onto the parent galaxies before the final mer…
We present an extensive parameter survey to study the influence of halo mass profiles on the development of tidal tails in interacting disk galaxies. We model the galaxies using a fixed exponential disk with a central bulge and vary the halo potential over a range of parameters using both the Hernquist and NFW mass distributions, probing the effect of the halo mass, extent and concentration. We examine the consistency of the results against both observational and theoretical constraints on halo profiles and comment on the failures and weaknesses of different models. Galaxies with rising or fla…
We present the results of new radio interferometer HI line observations for the merging galaxy pair NGC 4038/9 (`The Antennae'), obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The results improve substantially on those of van der Hulst (1979) and show in detail the two merging galactic disks and the two tidal tails produced by their interaction. The small edge-on spiral dwarf galaxy ESO 572-G045 is also seen near the tip of the southern tail, but distinct from it. It shows no signs of tidal interaction. The northern tidal tail of the Antennae shows no HI connection to the disks and has …
The formation of tidal dwarf galaxies (TDG) inside tidal arms of interacting disk galaxies has been studied with N-body and N-body/SPH simulations at different resolutions. In pure N-body simulations no bound objects are formed at high resolution. At low resolution bound objects can form in tidal tails in agreement with previous work. We conclude that tidal dwarf galaxies are not likely to form by pure collisionless collapse in tidal tails. However, the presence of a sufficiently massive and extended gas component in the progenitor disk supports the formation of bound stellar objects in the ti…
We present the first fully sampled map of 12CO (1-0) emission from M82 covering the entire galaxy. Our map contains a 12 x 15 kpc^2 area. We find that extraplanar CO emission, previously reported at short distances above the galactic plane, extends to heights of up to 6 kpc above the disk. Some of this emission is associated with tidal arms seen in HI, implying either that M82 contained substantial amounts of molecular gas in the outer disk, or that molecular gas formed after the tidal features. CO emission along the direction of the outflow extends to distances of 3 kpc above and below the di…
Large-field multi-color images of 20 galactic globular clusters are used to investigate the presence of tidal tails around these stellar systems. Field and cluster stars are sorted with the help of color-magnitude diagrams, and star-count analysis is performed on the selected cluster stars in order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of their surface density. We study the overdensities of these stars using the wavelet transform of the star counts in order to filter the background density noise and to detect the weak structures, at large scale, formed by the numerous stars previously members …
The recently discovered Virgo stellar over-density, which expands over \~1000deg^2 perpendicularly to the Galactic disk plane (7< Z <15 kpc, R~7 kpc), is the largest clump of tidal debris ever detected in the outer halo and is likely related with the accretion of a nearby dwarf galaxy by the Milky Way. We carry out N-body simulations of the Sagittarius stream to show that this giant stellar over-density is a confirmation of theoretical model predictions for the leading tail of the Sagittarius stream to cross the Milky Way plane in the Solar neighborhood. Radial velocity measurements are needed…
We report the discovery of a giant, loop-like stellar structure around the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4013. This arcing feature extends 6 arcmin (~26 kpc in projected distance) northeast from the center and 3 arcmin (~=12 kpc) from the disk plane; likely related features are also apparent on the southwest side of the disk, extending to 4 arcmin (~17 kpc). The detection of this low surface-brightness muR= 27.0+0.3-0.2 mag/sqarcsec) structure is independently confirmed in three separate datasets from three different telescopes. Although its true three dimensional geometry is unknown, the sky- pro…
The kinematics of tidal tails in colliding galaxies has been studied via Fabry-Perot observations of the Halpha emission. With their large field of view and high spatial resolution, the Fabry-Perot data allow to probe simultaneously, in 2-D, two kinematical features of the tidal ionized gas: large-scale velocity gradients due to streaming motions along the tails, and small-scale motions related to the internal dynamics of giant HII regions within the tails. In several interacting systems, massive (10^9 Msun) condensations of HI, CO and stars are observed in the outer regions of tails. Whether …
Recent spectroscopic observations of galaxies in distant clusters have revealed that the rate of star formation in star-forming galaxies is significantly suppressed with respect to their counterparts in the field at a similar redshift. It is, however, highly uncertain which physical processes are responsible for this suppression. We present the results of a numerical investigation of how the global tidal field of a cluster dynamically influences the reservoir of halo gas surrounding a disk galaxy as it falls into the cluster from the surrounding field. We find that the tidal field of the clust…
With the aid of simple numerical models, we discuss a particular aspect of the interaction between stellar orbital periods inside elliptical galaxies (Es) and the parent cluster tidal field (CTF), i.e., the possibility that collisionless stellar evaporation from Es is an effective mechanism for the production of the recently discovered intracluster stellar populations (ISP). These very preliminary investigations, based on idealized galaxy density profiles (such as Ferrers density distributions) show that, over an Hubble time, the amount of stars lost by a representative galaxy may sum up to th…
The influence of rotation and magnetic fields on the physical properties of isothermal gas clouds is discussed. The presence of rotation and/or magnetic fields results in an increase of the critical cloud mass with respect to gravitational instability for clouds of a given temperature and external pressure. Rotating clouds have higher densities. Consequently, they are more stable against tidal shear than non-rotating clouds. They can approach the Galactic Centre up to a radius of ~2 pc without being disrupted by the tidal shear due to the gravitational potential. For smaller radii the clouds e…
We conduct high-resolution collisionless N-body simulations to investigate the tidal evolution of dwarf galaxies on an eccentric orbit in the Milky Way (MW) potential. The dwarfs originally consist of a low surface brightness stellar disk embedded in a cosmologically motivated dark matter halo. During 10 Gyr of dynamical evolution and after 5 pericentre passages the dwarfs suffer substantial mass loss and their stellar component undergoes a major morphological transformation from a disk to a bar and finally to a spheroid. The bar is preserved for most of the time as the angular momentum is tra…
We examine the tidal disruption of satellite galaxies in a cosmological simulation of the formation of a disk galaxy in the $Λ$CDM scenario. We find that the disruption of satellite galaxies in orbits roughly coplanar with the disk leads naturally to the formation of ring-like stellar structures similar to that recently discovered in the outer disk of the Milky Way. Two interpretations appear plausible in this context. One is that the ring is a transitory, localized radial density enhancement reflecting the apocenter of particles stripped from a satellite during a recent pericentric passage (a…
In order to understand the extended massive tidal tails of the globular cluster Pal5, its very low mass and velocity dispersion, and its size, which is much larger than the theoretical tidal radius, we performed more than 1000 N-body simulations. Tidal shocks at disk crossings near perigalacticon dominate the evolution of extended low-concentration clusters, resulting in massive tidal tails and often in a quick destruction of the cluster. The overlarge size of Pal5 can be explained as the result of an expansion following the heating induced by the last strong disk shock ~150Myr ago. The models…
We present models of interacting galaxies in order to study the development of spatial offsets between the gaseous and stellar components in tidal tails. Observationally, such offsets are observed to exist over large scales (e.g., NGC 3690; Hibbard et al. 2000), suggesting an interaction between the tidal gas and some (unseen) hot ISM. Instead, our models show these offsets are a natural consequence of the radially extended HI spatial distribution in disk galaxies, coupled with internal dissipation in the gaseous component driven by the interaction. This mechanism is most effective in systems …
Tidal streams of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr) may be showering dark matter onto the solar system and contributing approx (0.3--23)% of the local density of our Galactic Halo. If the Sagittarius galaxy contains WIMP dark matter, the extra contribution from the stream gives rise to a step-like feature in the energy recoil spectrum in direct dark matter detection. For our best estimate of stream velocity (300 km/sec) and direction (the plane containing the Sgr dwarf and its debris), the count rate is maximum on June 28 and minimum on December 27 (for most recoil energies), and th…
