The influence of dark matter inhomogeneities on the angular size-redshift test is investigated for a large class of flat cosmological models driven by dark energy plus a cold dark matter component (XCDM model). The results are presented in two steps. First, the mass inhomogeneities are modeled by a generalized Zeldovich-Kantowski-Dyer-Roeder (ZKDR) distance which is characterized by a smoothness parameter $α(z)$ and a power index $γ$, and, second, we provide a statistical analysis to angular size data for a large sample of milliarcsecond compact radio sources. As a general result, we have found that the $α$ parameter is totally unconstrained by this sample of angular diameter data.
A cosmological model with pressurelless matter and a fluid of negative pressure is studied. At perturbative level, fluctuations of both fluids are considered. It is shown that at least at very large scales, the fluid of negative pressure, which represents the dark energy content of the universe, clusters like the dust fluid. Numerical integration reveals that this behaviour may also occur at scales smaller than the Hubble radius.
The shape of the angular power spectrum of galaxies in the linear regime is defined by the horizon size at the matter-radiation equality. When calibrated by cosmic microwave background measurements, the shape of the clustering spectrum can be used as a standard ruler to estimate angular diameter distance as a function of redshift at which galaxy clustering is measured. We apply the proposed cosmological test of Cooray et al. (2001) to a recent set of luminous red galaxy angular clustering spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey between redshifts of 0.2 and 0.6. Using the overall shape of the…
We quantify the angular clustering of radio galaxies in the NVSS and FIRST radio surveys using the two-point correlation function and the moments of counts-in-cells - both important points of comparison with theory. These investigations consistently demonstrate that the slope of the correlation function for radio galaxies agrees with that for optically-selected galaxies, gamma = 1.8. We describe how to disentangle the imprint of galaxy clustering from the two observational problems: resolution of radio galaxies into multiple components and gradients in source surface density induced by difficu…
We study the CMB anisotropy induced by the non-linear perturbations in the massive neutrino density associated to the non-linear gravitational clustering proceses. Our results show that for the neutrino fraction in agreement with that indicated by the astroparticle and nuclear physics experiments and a cosmological accreting mass comparable with the mass of known clusters, the angular resolution and the sensitivity of the CMB anisotropy measurements from the Planck surveyor will allow the detection of the dynamical effects of the neutrino gravitational clustering.
We present the CMB anisotropy induced by the non-linear perturbations in the massive neutrino density associated to the non-linear gravitational clustering. We show that the non-linear time varying potential induced by the gravitational clustering process generates metric perturbations that affect the time evolution of the density fluctuations in all the components of the expanding Universe, leaving imprints on the CMB anisotropy power spectrum at subdegree angular scales. For a neutrino fraction in agreement with that indicated by the astroparticle and nuclear physics experiments and a cosmol…
We measure the angular correlation function of radio galaxies selected by the 843 MHz Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS). We find that the characteristic imprint of large-scale structure is clearly detectable, and that the survey is very uniform. Through comparison with similar analyses for other wide-area radio surveys - the 1400 MHz NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and the 325 MHz Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS) - we are able to derive consistent angular clustering parameters, including a steep slope for the clustering function, $w(θ) \propto θ^{-1.1}$. We revise upwards previous…
Using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method we perform a global analysis constraining the dynamics of dark energy in light of the supernova (Riess "Gold" samples), galaxy clustering (SDSS 3D power spectra and SDSS lyman-αforest information) and the latest three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations. We have allowed the dark energy equation of state to get across -1 and pay particular attention to the effects when incorrectly neglecting dark energy perturbations. We find the parameter space of dynamical dark energy is now well constrained and neglecting dark energy …
We show that future Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray samples should be able to distinguish whether the sources of UHECRs are hosted by galaxy clusters or ordinary galaxies, or whether the sources are uncorrelated with the large-scale structure of the universe. Moreover, this is true independently of arrival direction uncertainty due to magnetic deflection or measurement error. The reason for this is the simple property that the strength of large-scale clustering for extragalactic sources depends on their mass, with more massive objects, such as galaxy clusters, clustering more strongly than lower …
We provide a generic but physically clear discussion of the clustering properties of dark energy models. We explicitly show that in quintessence-type models the dark energy fluctuations, on scales smaller than the Hubble radius, are of the order of the perturbations to the Newtonian gravitational potential, hence necessarily small on cosmological scales. Moreover, comparable fluctuations are associated with different gauge choices. We also demonstrate that the often used homogeneous approximation is unrealistic, and that the so-called dark energy mutation is a trivial artifact of an effective,…
The integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) as measured through its correlation with galaxies provides a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of the dark energy through its large scale clustering properties. Ultimately, a deep all-sky galaxy survey out to z~2 can make a 10sigma or ~10% measurement of the correlation and limit ~3% changes in the gravitational potential or total density fluctuation due to dark energy clustering on the Gpc scale. A canonical single scalar field or quintessence model predicts that these clustering effects will appear on the…
We explore the possibility of improving the $Λ$CDM model at megaparsec scales by introducing a scalar interaction which increases the mutual gravitational attraction of dark matter particles. Using N-body simulations, we study the spatial distribution of dark matter particles and halos. We measure the effect of modifications in the Newton's gravity on properties of the two-point correlation function, the dark matter power spectrum, the cumulative halo mass function and density probability distribution functions. The results look promising: the scalar interactions produce desirable features at …
Density profiles of cosmological virialized systems, or dark halos, have recently attracted much attention. I first present a brief historical review of numerical simulations to quantify the halo density profiles. Then I describe the latest results on the universal density profile and their observational confrontation. Finally I discuss a clustering model of those halos with particular emphasis on the cosmological light-cone effect.
(abridged) A wide-field galaxy redshift survey allows one to probe galaxy clustering at largest spatial scales, which carries an invaluable information on horizon-scale physics complementarily to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Assuming the planned survey consisting of z~1 and z~3 surveys with areas of 2000 and 300 square degrees, respectively, we study the prospects for probing dark energy clustering from the measured galaxy power spectrum, assuming the dynamical properties of dark energy are specified in terms of the equation of state and the effective sound speed c_e in the context o…
In this paper we study the angular momentum properties of simulated dark matter halos at high redshift that likely host the first stars in the Universe. Calculating the spin distributions of these $10^6 - 10^7 \Msun$ halos in redshift slices from $z = 15 - 6$, we find that they are well fit by a log-normal distribution as is found for lower redshift and more massive halos in earlier work. We find that both the mean value of the spin and dispersion are largely unchanged with redshift for all halos. Our key result is that subsamples of low and high spin $10^6 \Msun$ and $10^7 \Msun$ halos show d…
Two methods of constraining the properties of dark energy are weak lensing tomography and cluster counting. Uncertainties in mass calibration of clusters can be reduced by using the properties of halo clustering (the clustering of clusters). However, within a single survey, weak lensing and halo clustering probe the same density fluctuations. We explore the question of whether this information can be used twice -- once in weak lensing and then again in halo clustering to calibrate cluster masses -- or whether the combined dark energy constraints are weaker than the sum of the individual constr…
We reconsider the inference of spatial power spectra from angular clustering data and show how to include correlations in both the angular correlation function and the spatial power spectrum. Inclusion of the full covariance matrices loosens the constraints on large-scale structure inferred from the APM survey by over a factor of two. We present a new inversion technique based on singular value decomposition that allows one to propagate the covariance matrix on the angular correlation function through to that of the spatial power spectrum and to reconstruct smooth power spectra without underes…
We show the apparent redshift-space clustering of galaxies in redshift range of 0.2--0.4 provides surprisingly useful constraints on dark energy component in the universe, because of the right balance between the density of objects and the survey depth. We apply Fisher matrix analysis to the the Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), as a concrete example. Possible degeneracies in the evolution of the equation of state (EOS) and the other cosmological parameters are clarified.
We critically examine the reliability of the dark matter clustering in high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations on scales below the mean separation length of particles. The particle discreteness effect imposes the two fundamental limitations on those scales; the lack of the initial fluctuation power and the finite mass resolution. We address this problem applying the dark halo approach and are able to discuss separately how those two limitations affect the dark matter clustering in $N$-body simulations at early epochs. We find that limitations of the dark matter clustering are primari…
We analyze the uncertainties in the amplitudes of the spatial correlation functions estimated from angular correlations in a sample from the APM Galaxy Survey, with $b_J=17-20$. We model the uncertainties in the selection function and in the evolution of clustering. In particular we estimate $σ_8^{APM}$, the rms galaxy number fluctuations in spheres of radius at $8 \Mpc$, from the measured angular variance in the APM. The uncertainty in $σ_8^{APM}$ has three main contributions: 8\% from sampling and selection function uncertainties, 7\% from the uncertainty in the evolution of clustering and 3…
Understanding the clustering of galaxies has long been a goal of modern observational cosmology. Utilizing our photometric redshift technique a volume limited sample containing more than 2 million galaxies is constructed from the SDSS galaxy catalog. In the largest such analysis to date, we study the angular clustering as a function of luminosity and spectral type. Using Limber's equation we calculate the clustering length for the full data set as r0=5.77+/-0.10 Mpc/h. We find that r0 increases with luminosity by a factor of 1.6 over the sampled luminosity range, in agreement with previous red…
There has been some recent activity in trying to understand the dark matter clustering properties in the quasilinear regime, through resummation of perturbative terms, otherwise known as the renormalized perturbation theory (astro-ph/0509418), or the renormalization group method (astro-ph/0606028). While it is not always clear why such methods should work so well, there is no reason for them to capture non-perturbative events such as shell-crossing. In order to estimate the magnitude of non-perturbative effects, we introduce a (hypothetical) model of sticky dark matter, which only differs from…
Observing dark energy dynamics is the most important aspect of the dark energy research. In this paper we perform an analysis of the constraints on the property of dark energy from the current astronomical observations. We pay particular attention to the effects of dark energy perturbations. Using the data from SNIa (157 "gold" sample), WMAP and SDSS we find that the best fitting dark energy model is given by the dynamical model with the equation of state across -1. Nevertheless the standard \LambdaCDM models are still a very good fit to the current data and evidence for dynamics is currently …
We study the evolution of galaxy clustering in various cosmological models with quintessence. We investigate how the analytical predictions vary with change of dark energy equation of state $w_X$. Comparing these predictions against available data we discuss to what extent the problems of galaxy biasing can be modelled. This will be key in constraining the dark energy equation of state with future galaxy surveys. We use a compilation of various surveys to study the number density and amplitude of galaxy clustering from observations of the local universe at $z \sim 0$ to that of the Lyman break…
We present the first analysis of large-scale clustering from the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic legacy survey: SWIRE. We compute the angular correlation function of galaxies selected to have 3.6 micron fluxes brighter than 32 muJy in three fields totaling two square degrees in area. In each field we detect clustering with a high level of significance. The amplitude and slope of the correlation function is consistent between the three fields and is modeled as $w(theta)=Aθ^{1-γ}$ with $A=(0.6\pm0.3)\times10^{-3}, γ=2.03\pm0.10$. With a fixed slope of $γ=1.8$, we obtain an amplitude of …
We discuss some recent progress in constructing analytic approximations to the galaxy clustering. We show that successful models can be constructed for the clustering of both dark matter and dark matter haloes. Our understanding of galaxy clustering and galaxy biasing can be greatly enhanced by these models.
We highlight a viable mechanism leading to the formation of dark energy structures on sub-horizon cosmological scales, starting from linear perturbations in scalar-tensor cosmologies. We show that the coupling of the dark energy scalar field, or Quintessence, to the Ricci scalar induces a "dragging" of its density perturbations through the general relativistic gravitational potentials. We discuss, in particular, how this process forces dark energy to behave as a pressureless component if the cosmic evolution is dominated by non-relativistic matter. This property is also analyzed in terms of th…
Redshift distortions, both geometrical and kinematical, of quasar clustering are simulated, for the Two-Degree Field QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ), showing that they are very effective to constrain the cosmological density and equation of state parameters, Omega_{m0}, Omega_{x0} and w. Particularly, it emerges that, for the cosmological constant case, the test is especially sensitive to the difference Omega_{m0} - Omega_{Lambda 0}, whereas, for the spatially flat case, it is quite competitive with future supernova and galaxy count tests, besides being complimentary to them.
We have studied galaxy two-point angular correlations as a function of color using 4-m plate photometry in two independent fields. Each field consists of over 2900 galaxies with magnitudes 20<B_J <23.5 in an area of approximately 750 arcmin^2 . We find that the autocorrelation amplitude of the bluest 15% of galaxies is surprisingly strong, with a relative increase in clustering amplitude of a factor of 6 over that of the complete data set, while exhibiting a power law slope consistent with the canonical value of -0.8. These very blue galaxies are also found to be weakly correlated with galaxie…
The faint radio point sources that are unresolved in cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy maps are likely to be a biased tracer of the large-scale structure dark matter distribution. While the shot-noise contribution to the angular power spectrum of unresolved radio point sources is included either when optimally constructing the CMB angular power spectrum, as with WMAP data, or when extracting cosmological parameters, we suggest that clustering part of the point source power spectrum should also be included. This is especially necessary at high frequencies above 150 GHz, where the clu…
We investigate the structure of the dark matter halo formed in three different cold dark matter scenarios. We performed N-body simulations of formation of 13 cluster-sized halos. In all runs, density cusps proportional to $r^{-1.5}$ developed at the center. This result was independent of the cosmological models we simulated. We could not reproduce the cusp shallower than $r^{-1.5}$, which was obtained in some of previous studies. We also found that in all runs the density structure evolves in a self-similar way, even in $Ω\ne 1$ universes. These results show that the formation of structural fo…
We use FRIIb radio galaxy redshift-angular size data to constrain cosmological parameters in a dark energy scalar field model. The derived constraints are consistent with but weaker than those determined using Type Ia supernova redshift-magnitude data.
We identify close pairs of galaxies from 278 deg^2 of Sloan Digital Sky Survey commissioning imaging data. The pairs are drawn from a sample of 330,041 galaxies with 18 < r^* < 20. We determine the angular correlation function of galaxy pairs, and find it to be stronger than the correlation function of single galaxies by a factor of 2.9 +/- 0.4. The two correlation functions have the same logarithmic slope of 0.77. We invert Limber's equation to estimate the three-dimensional correlation functions; we find clustering lengths of r_0= 4.2 +/- 0.4 h^{-1} Mpc for galaxies and 7.8 +/- 0.7 h^{-1} Mp…
A phenomenological model for the clustering of dark matter halos on the light-cone is presented. In particular, an empirical prescription for the scale-, mass-, and time-dependence of halo biasing is described in detail. A comparison of the model predictions against the light-cone output from the Hubble Volume $N$-body simulation indicates that the present model is fairly accurate for scale above $\sim 5h^{-1}$Mpc. Then I argue that the practical limitation in applying this model comes from the fact that we have not yet fully understood what are clusters of galaxies, especially at high redshif…
Non-linear gravitational clustering in a universe dominated by dark energy, modelled by a `quintessence' scalar field, and cold dark matter with space-time varying mass is studied. Models of this type, where the variable mass is induced by dependence on the scalar field, as suggested by string theory or extra-dimensions, have been proposed as a viable solution of the coincidence problem. A general framework for the study of the non-linear phases of structure formation in scalar field cosmologies is provided, starting from a general relativistic treatment of the combined dark matter-dark energy…
We present a stochastic approach to the spatial clustering of dark matter haloes in Lagrangian space. Our formalism is based on a local formulation of the `excursion set' approach by Bond et al., which automatically accounts for the `cloud-in-cloud' problem in the identification of bound systems. Our method allows to calculate correlation functions of haloes in Lagrangian space using either a multi-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation with suitable boundary conditions or an array of Langevin equations with spatially correlated random forces. We compare the results of our method with theoretical …
We develop a phenomenological model to predict the clustering of dark matter halos on the light-cone by combining several existing theoretical models. Assuming that the velocity field of halos on large scales is approximated by linear theory, we propose an empirical prescription of a scale-, mass-, and time-dependence of halo biasing. We test our model against the Hubble Volume $N$-body simulation and examine its validity and limitations. We find a good agreement in two-point correlation functions of dark matter halos between the phenomenological model predictions and measurements from the sim…
We investigate the clustering properties of high-redshift galaxies within three competing scenarios for assigning luminous galaxies to dark matter halos from N-body simulations: a one galaxy per massive halo model, a quiescent star formation model, and a collisional starburst model. We compare these models to observations of Lyman-Break galaxies at z~3$ With current data and the simple statistic used here, one cannot rule out any of these models, but we see potential for finding distinguishing features using statistics that are sensitive to the tails of the distribution, and statistics based o…
Current and upcoming wide-field surveys for weak gravitational lensing and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect will generate mass-selected catalogues of dark matter halos with internal or followup photometric redshift information. The angular power spectrum of these halos provides additional information that complements the previously-studied number counts. In particular, using the shape of the linear power spectrum as a standard ruler that is calibrated by cosmic microwave background measurements, we find that a survey of 4000 sqr. deg. and a mass threshold of 10^14 M_sun can be used to determine t…
We study the clustering properties of galaxy clusters expected to be observed by various forthcoming surveys both in the X-ray and sub-mm regimes by the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. Several different background cosmological models are assumed, including the concordance $Λ$CDM and various cosmologies with dynamical evolution of the dark energy. Particular attention is paid to models with a significant contribution of dark energy at early times which affects the process of structure formation. Past light cone and selection effects in cluster catalogs are carefully modeled by realistic scal…
The passage from angular to spatial correlations, in the case of spatial clustering length depending on the average distance between nearby objects is studied. We show that, in a number of cases, the scaling law of angular correlation amplitudes, which holds for constant spatial clustering length, is still true also for a luminosity dependent spatial correlation. If the Limber equation is then naively used to obtain `the' spatial clustering length from the angular function amplitude, a quantity close to the average object separation is obtained. The case of cluster clustering is explicitly con…
In this paper we study the clustering of SZ-selected galaxy clusters on a past light-cone, particularly paying attention to the possibility of constraining properties of dark energy. The prospects of detecting baryonic features in the cluster power spectrum for a wide and shallow survey like PLANCK, and for an SPT-like narrow and deep survey are discussed. It is demonstrated that these future blank sky SZ surveys will have capability to improve significantly over the recently announced detection of baryonic oscillations based on the SDSS Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) sample. We carry out parameter…
We investigate the clustering of high redshift galaxies in five variants of the cold dark matter (CDM) scenario, using hydrodynamic cosmological simulations that resolve the formation of systems with circular velocities $v_c \geq 100 \kms$ ($Ω=1$) or $v_c \geq 70 \kms$ ($Ω=0.4$). Although the five models differ in their cosmological parameters and in the shapes and amplitudes of their mass power spectra, they predict remarkably similar galaxy clustering at $z=2$, 3, and 4. The galaxy correlation functions show almost no evolution over this redshift range, even though the mass correlation funct…
We develop the formalism required to interpret, within a CDM framework, the angular clustering of sources in a deep radio survey. The effect of nonlinear evolution of density perturbations is discussed as is the effect of the assumed redshift distribution of sources. We also investigate what redshift ranges contribute to the clustering signal at different angular scales. Application of the formalism is focussed on the clustering detected in the FIRST survey but measurements made for other radio surveys are also investigated. We comment on the implications for the evolution of clustering.
Two-body scattering and other discreteness effects are unimportant in cosmological gravitational clustering in most scenarios, since the dark matter has a small particle mass. The collective field should determine evolution: Two-body scattering in simulations violates the Poisson-Vlasov equations. We test this in PM, P$^3$M, Tree, and NGPM codes, noting that a collisionless code will preserve the one-dimensional character of plane wave collapse. We find collisionality vanishing as the softening parameter approaches the mean interparticle separation. Solutions for the problem are suggested, inv…
We investigate the structure of the dark matter halo formed in the cold dark matter scenarios by N-body simulations with parallel treecode on GRAPE cluster systems. We simulated 8 halos with the mass of $4.4\times 10^{14}M_{\odot}$ to $1.6\times 10^{15}M_{\odot}$ in the SCDM and LCDM model using up to 30 million particles. With the resolution of our simulations, the density profile is reliable down to 0.2 percent of the virial radius. Our results show that the slope of inner cusp within 1 percent virial radius is shallower than -1.5, and the radius where the shallowing starts exhibits run-to-r…
We discuss the angular clustering of galaxy clusters at z > 1 selected within 50 sq. deg from the Spitzer Wide-Infrared Extragalactic survey. We employ a simple color selection to identify high redshift galaxies with no dependence on galaxy rest-frame optical color using Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 micron photometry. The majority (>90%) of galaxies with z > 1.3 are identified with [3.6] - [4.5] > -0.1 AB mag. We identify candidate galaxy clusters at z > 1 by selecting overdensities of >26-28 objects with [3.6] - [4.5] > -0.1 mag within radii of 1.4 arcminutes, which corresponds to r < 0.5 Mpc/h a…
We investigate an analytic model to compute nonlinear power spectrum of dark matter, galaxies and their cross-correlation. The model is based on Press-Schechter halos, which cluster and have realistic dark matter profiles. The total power spectrum is a sum of two contributions, one from correlations betwen the halos and one from correlations within the same halo. We show that such a model can give dark matter power spectra which match well with the results of N-body simulations, provided that concentration parameter decreases with the halo mass. Galaxy power spectrum differs from dark matter p…
We present a preliminary measurement of the angular clustering of faint ($R \le 25$) field galaxies in which we concentrate on the behavior of $w(θ)$ on small angular scales ($θ\ls 10''$). The galaxies are strongly clustered and $w(θ)$ is well-characterized by a power law of the form $A_w θ^{-δ}$. The best-fitting value of the power law index, $δ$, is, however, steeper than the fiducial value of $δ= 0.8$, indicating there are more pairs of galaxies separated by $θ\ls 10''$ in our sample than would be otherwise expected. Using the best-fitting form of $w(θ)$, we estimate that $\sim 10%$ of the …
For faint photometric surveys our ability to quantify the clustering of galaxies has depended on interpreting the angular correlation function as a function of the limiting magnitude of the data. Due to the broad redshift distribution of galaxies at faint magnitude limits the correlation signal has been extremely difficult to detect and interpret. We introduce a new technique for measuring the evolution of clustering. We utilize photometric redshifts, derived from multicolor surveys, to isolate redshift intervals and calculate the evolution of the amplitude of the angular 2-pt correlation func…
We perform a detailed analysis of the statistical significance of a concentration of Lyman break galaxies at $z \sim 3$ recently discovered by Steidel et al. (1997), using a series of N-body simulations with $N=256^3$ particles in a $(100\himpc)^3$ comoving box. While the observed number density of Lyman break galaxies at $z\sim3$ implies that they correspond to systems with dark matter halos of $\simlt 10^{12}M_\odot$, the resulting clustering of such objects on average is not strong enough to be reconciled with the concentration if it is fairly common; we predict one similar concentration ap…
The two-point correlation of the 4th (current) BATSE catalog (2494 objects) is calculated. It is shown to be consistent with zero at nearly all angular scales of interest. Assuming that GRBs trace the large scale structure in the universe we calculate the angular correlation function for the standard CDM (sCDM) model. It is shown to be $\le 10^{-4}$ at $θ\simeq 5^\circ$ if the BATSE catalog is assumed to be a volume-limited sample up to $z \simeq 1$. Combined with the error analysis on the BATSE catalog this suggests that nearly $10^5$ GRBs will be needed to make a positive detection of the tw…
We have run Monte Carlo simulations, for quasar clustering redshift distortions in the Two-Degree Field QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ), in order to elicit the power of redshift distortions (geometric Alcock-Paczynski and linear kinematic) to constrain the cosmological density and equation of state parameters, Omega_{m0}, Omega_{x0}, w, of a pressureless matter + dark energy model. It turns out that, for the cosmological constant case (w = -1), the test is especially sensitive to the difference Delta := Omega_{m0} - Omega_{Lambda 0}, whereas for the spatially flat case (k = 0), it is quite competiti…
The density profile and the clustering of dark matter (DM) halos are two very important ingredients for understanding many observations of galaxies. In this talk, I present our new results for these two quantities from a large set of high quality N-body simulations. We show that in an Einstein de Sitter Universe about 35 percent of the halos could not be fitted by the Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) profile because of too significant substructures, another 50 percent with less substructures can be reasonably described by the NFW profile, and the rest with the least substructures can be fitted by …
Observations are compared to conflicting predictions about self-gravitational structure formation by the hydro-gravitational theory (HGT) of Gibson 1996-2003 versus cold-dark-matter hierarchical-clustering-cosmology (CDMHCC) and the Jeans 1902 criterion. According to HGT, gravitational structures form immediately after mass-energy equality by plasma fragmentation at 30,000 years when viscous and weak turbulence forces first balance gravitational forces within the horizon L_H = ct < L_J = c/[3ρG]^1/2, contrary to the Jeans 1902 criterion. Buoyancy forces fossilize the 10^-12 s^-1 rate-of-strain…
We compare the specific angular momentum profiles of virialized dark halos in cold dark matter (CDM) and warm dark matter (WDM) models using high-resolution dissipationless simulations. The simulations were initialized using the same set of modes, except on small scales, where the power was suppressed in WDM below the filtering length. Remarkably, WDM as well as CDM halos are well-described by the two-parameter angular momentum profile of Bullock et al. (2001), even though the halo masses are below the filtering scale of the WDM. Although the best-fit shape parameters change quantitatively for…
A growing neutrino mass can stop the dynamical evolution of a dark energy scalar field, thus explaining the 'why now' problem. We show that such models lead to a substantial neutrino clustering on the scales of superclusters. Nonlinear neutrino lumps form at redshift z \sim 1 and could partially drag the clustering of dark matter. If observed, large scale non-linear structures could be an indication for a new attractive 'cosmon force' stronger than gravity.
We study the angular momentum profile of dark matter halos for a statistical sample drawn from a set of high-resolution cosmological simulations of $256^3$ particles. Two typical Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models have been analyzed, and the halos are selected to have at least $3\times 10^4$ particles in order to reliably measure the angular momentum profile. In contrast with the recent claims of Bullock et al., we find that the degree of misalignment of angular momentum within a halo is very high. About 50 percent of halos have more than 10 percent of halo mass in the mass of negative angular mome…
The angular distribution of galaxies encodes a wealth of information about large scale structure. Ultimately, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) will record the angular positions of order 10^8 galaxies in five bands, adding significantly to the cosmological constraints. This is the first in a series of papers analyzing a rectangular stripe 2.5x90 degrees from early SDSS data. We present the angular correlation function for galaxies in four separate magnitude bins on angular scales ranging from 0.003 degrees to 15 degrees. Much of the focus of this paper is on potential systematic effects. We …
We use a very large simulation of structure growth in a LCDM universe -- the Millennium Simulation -- to study assembly bias, the fact that the large-scale clustering of haloes of given mass varies significantly with their assembly history. We extend earlier work based on the same simulation by superposing results for redshifts from 0 to 3, by defining a less noisy estimator of clustering amplitude, and by considering halo concentration, substructure mass fraction and spin, as well as formation time, as additional parameters. These improvements lead to results with less noise than previous stu…
We present extended simulations of the distribution of galaxy clusters in different dark matter models, using an optimized version of the Zel'dovich approximation. Six different dark matter models are studied: Standard CDM, Open CDM, Tilted CDM, Cold + Hot DM, low-density CDM with cosmological constant, and low Hubble constant ($h=0.3$) CDM. We compare simulations with an Abell/ACO redshift sample. We find that the models that best reproduce the clustering of the real data sets are the Cold + Hot DM model and the CDM model with a cosmological constant. The probability density function of all m…
