We present the analysis of a total of 177h of high-quality optical time-series photometry of the helium atmosphere pulsating white dwarf (DBV) EC 20058-5234. The bulk of the observations (135h) were obtained during a WET campaign (XCOV15) in July 1997 that featured coordinated observing from 4 southern observatory sites over an 8-day period. The remaining data (42h) were obtained in June 2004 at Mt John Observatory in NZ over a one-week observing period. This work significantly extends the discovery observations of this low-amplitude (few percent) pulsator by increasing the number of detected frequencies from 8 to 18, and employs a simulation procedure to confirm the reality of these frequencies to a high level of significance (1 in 1000). The nature of the observed pulsation spectrum precludes identification of unique pulsation mode properties using any clearly discernable trends. However, we have used a global modelling procedure employing genetic algorithm techniques to identify the n, l values of 8 pulsation modes, and thereby obtain asteroseismic measurements of several model parameters, including the stellar mass (0.55 M_sun) and T_eff (~28200 K). These values are consistent with those derived from published spectral fitting: T_eff ~ 28400 K and log g ~ 7.86. We also present persuasive evidence from apparent rotational mode splitting for two of the modes that indicates this compact object is a relatively rapid rotator with a period of 2h. In direct analogy with the corresponding properties of the hydrogen (DAV) atmosphere pulsators, the stable low-amplitude pulsation behaviour of EC 20058 is entirely consistent with its inferred effective temperature, which indicates it is close to the blue edge of the DBV instability strip. We review the basic concepts, the present state of theoretical models, and the future prospects for theory and observations of pulsating stellar atmospheres. Our emphasis is on radially pulsating cool stars, which dynamic atmospheres provide a general example for the differences with standard static model atmospheres.
In the light of the recent and unexpected discovery of a brand new type of white dwarfs, those with carbon-dominated atmospheres, we examine the asteroseismological potential of such stars. The motivation behind this is based on the observation that past models of carbon-atmosphere white dwarfs have partially ionized outer layers that bear strong resemblance with those responsible for mode excitation in models of pulsating DB (helium-atmosphere) and pulsating DA (hydrogen-atmosphere) white dwarfs. Our exciting main result is that, given the right location in parameter space, some carbon-atmosp…
Seismological observations with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) allow the determination of the subsurface compositional structure of white dwarf stars. The hot DO PG 1159 has a helium surface layer with a mass of 0.001 Msun, while the cooler DB white dwarf GD 358 has a much thinner surface helium layer of 10^-6 Msun. These results imply that either there is no evolutionary relation between these two stars, or that there is an unknown mass loss mechanism. To investigate possible evolutionary links between these objects, we computed evolutionary sequences of white dwarf models including time-dep…
The present letter is aimed at exploring the influence of overshooting during the central helium burning in pre-white dwarf progenitors on the pulsational properties of PG1159 stars. To this end we follow the complete evolution an intermediate-mass white dwarf progenitor from the zero age main sequence through the thermally pulsing and born-again phases to the domain of the PG1159 stars. Our results suggest that the presence of mode-trapping features in the period spacings of these hot pulsating stars could result from structure in the carbon-oxygen core. We find in particular that in order to…
We report the analysis of optical spectra of the extreme helium star LSS 3184 (BX Cir) to determine its effective temperature and gravity throughout its pulsation cycle. The spectra were also used to measure its chemical abundances. We report rest gravity, log g = 3.38 +/- 0.02, and a chemical abundance mixture consistent with those reported earlier in a study using an optical spectrum with lower spectral resolution and a lower signal to noise ratio. Our analysis decreases the upper limit for the H abundance to H < 6.0 (mass fraction < 7.1 x 10^-7). Our gravity corresponds to stellar mass M = …
To improve the understanding of the pulsational instabilities of some of the PG1159-type pre-white dwarfs we performed detailed stability analyses on helium star evolutionary models. With the canonical chemical compositions, pulsational instabilities were encountered for all stellar masses considered (0.57, 0.63, 0.7 M_sol). The blue boundary agrees satisfactorily with observations. The red edge, on the other hand, is found to extend lower temperatures than presently admitted by observers. The dependence of the pulsational instabilities on helium or even hydrogen abundance in the stellar envel…
We report the discovery of a strong magnetic field in the unique pulsating carbon-atmosphere white dwarf SDSS J142625.71+575218.3. From spectra gathered at the MMT and Keck telescopes, we infer a surface field of B_s ~1.2 MG, based on obvious Zeeman components seen in several carbon lines. We also detect the presence of a Zeeman-splitted He I 4471 line, which is an indicator of the presence of a non-negligible amount of helium in the atmosphere of this Hot DQ star. This is important for understanding its pulsations, as nonadabatic theory reveals that some helium must be present in the envelope…
We report on our findings of the bright, pulsating, helium atmosphere white dwarf GD 358, based on time-resolved optical spectrophotometry. We identify 5 real pulsation modes and at least 6 combination modes at frequencies consistent with those found in previous observations. The measured Doppler shifts from our spectra show variations with amplitudes of up to 5.5 km/s at the frequencies inferred from the flux variations. We conclude that these are variations in the line-of-sight velocities associated with the pulsational motion. We use the observed flux and velocity amplitudes and phases to t…
Recent observations and theoretical investigations of neutron stars indicate that their atmospheres consist not of hydrogen or iron but possibly other elements such as helium. We calculate the ionization and dissociation equilibrium of helium in the conditions found in the atmospheres of magnetized neutron stars. For the first time this investigation includes the internal degrees of freedom of the helium molecule. We found that at the temperatures and densities of neutron star atmospheres the rotovibrational excitations of helium molecules are populated. Including these excitations increases t…
The atmospheres of cool, helium-rich white dwarfs constitute an exotic and poorly explored physical regime of stellar atmospheres. Under physical conditions where the temperature varies from $\rm 1000K$ to $\rm 10000K$, the density can reach values as large as $\rm 2 g/cm^{3}$, and the pressure is as high as $\rm 1 Mbar$, the atmosphere is no longer an ideal gas and must be treated as a dense fluid. Helium atoms become strongly correlated and refraction effects are present. Opacity sources such as $\rm He^{-}$ free-free absorption must be calculated with a formalism that has never been applied…
Here, we present near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 15 helium atmosphere, metal-rich white dwarfs obtained at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. While a connection has been demonstrated between the most highly polluted, hydrogen atmosphere white dwarfs and the presence of warm circumstellar dust and gas, their frequency at the helium atmosphere variety is poorly constrained. None of our targets show excess near-infrared radiation consistent with warm orbiting material. Adding these near-infrared constraints to previous near- and mid-infrared observations, the frequency of warm circ…
Four members of the new class of pulsating sdB stars are analysed from Keck HIRES spectra using NLTE and LTE model atmospheres. Atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, log(He/H)), metal abundances and rotational velocities are determined. Balmer line fitting is found to be consistent with the helium ionization equilibrium for PG1605+072 but not so for PG1219+534 indicating that systematic errors in the model atmosphere analysis of the latter have been underestimated previously. All stars are found to be helium deficient probably due to diffusion. The metals are also depleted with the notable exce…
We present detailed analysis of the vertical pulsation mode cross-section in ten rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars based on spectroscopic time-series observations. The aim of this analysis is to derive from observations a complete picture of how the amplitude and phase of magnetoacoustic waves depend on depth. We find common features in the pulsational behaviour of roAp stars. Within a sample of representative elements the lowest amplitudes are detected for Eu II (and Fe in 33 Lib and in HD 19918), then pulsations go through the layers where Halpha core, Nd, and Pr lines are formed. There RV…
Pulsation influences atmospheric structures of variable AGB stars (Miras) considerably. Spectral lines of the CO dv=3 vibration-rotation bands (at 1.6mue) therefore have a very characteristic appearance in time series of high-resolution spectra. Coupled to the light cycle they can be observed blue- or red-shifted, for some phases even line doubling is found. This is being explained by radial pulsations and shock fronts emerging in the atmospheres. Based on dynamic model atmospheres synthetic CO line profiles were calculated consistently, reproducing this scenario qualitatively.
A model of a mixed helium-hydrogenic atmosphere of the isolated neutron star 1E1207.4-5209 is proposed. It is based on the assumption that the main components in the atmosphere are the exotic molecular ions $He_2^{3+}$ and $H_3^{2+}$ with the presence of $He^{+}, (HeH)^{2+}, H_2^{+}$ under a surface magnetic field $\approx 4.4 \times 10^{13}$ G. In addition to two absorption features observed by {\it Chandra} observatory (Sanwal et al, 2002) the model predicts one more narrow absorption feature at $\approx 400$ eV.
This work presents a new method to compute time and wavelength dependent center-to-limb brightness distributions for Classical Cepheids. Our model atmospheres are based on second-order accurate 1-D hydrodynamic calculations, performed in spherical geometry. The brightness intensity distributions, and the resulting limb darkening, are computed through the dynamic atmospheres by using a full set of atomic and molecular opacities. Our results confirm important differences with respect to equivalent hydrostatic models. The amount of limb darkening, and the shape of the limb profiles, show a strong…
We investigate the dissociation equilibrium of $\rm H_2$ in very cool, helium-rich white dwarf atmospheres. We present the solution of the non-ideal chemical equilibrium for the dissociation of molecular hydrogen in a medium of dense helium. We find that at the photosphere of cool white dwarfs of $T_{\rm eff}\rm=4000 K$, the non-ideality results in an increase of the mole fraction of molecular hydrogen by up to a factor of $\sim 10$, compared to the equilibrium value for the ideal gas. This increases the $\rm H_{2}-He$ CIA opacity by an order of magnitude and will affect the determination of t…
In previous attempts to perform seismic modelling of pulsating subdwarf-B stars, various mode identification techniques are used with uncertain results. We investigated a method so far neglected in sdB stars, but very successful for Main Sequence pulsators, that is, mode identification from the line-profile variations caused by stellar pulsation. We report the calculation of time-resolved synthetic spectra for sdB stars pulsating with various combinations of pulsation modes; these calculations were carried out over appropriate ranges of effective temperature, surface gravity and helium abundan…
In solar EUV spectra the He I and He II resonance lines show unusual behaviour and have anomalously high intensities compared with other transition region lines. The formation of the helium resonance lines is investigated through extensive non-LTE radiative transfer calculations. The model atmospheres of Vernazza, Avrett & Loeser are found to provide reasonable matches to the helium resonance line intensities but significantly over-estimate the intensities of other transition region lines. New model atmospheres have been developed from emission measure distributions derived by Macpherson & Jor…
We determine the ratio of helium- to hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarf stars as a function of effective temperature from a model atmosphere analysis of the infrared photometric data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey combined with available visual magnitudes. Our study surpasses any previous analysis of this kind both in terms of the accuracy of the Teff determinations as well as the size of the sample. We observe that the ratio of helium- to hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarfs increases gradually from a constant value of ~0.25 between Teff = 15,000 K and 10,000 K to a value twice as large in the r…
Recent observations of thermally emitting isolated neutron stars revealed spectral features that could be interpreted as radiative transitions of He in a magnetized neutron star atmosphere. We present Hartree-Fock calculations of the polarization-dependent photoionization cross sections of the He atom in strong magnetic fields ranging from 10^12 G to 10^14 G. Convenient fitting formulae for the cross sections are given as well as related oscillator strengths for various bound-bound transitions. The effects of finite nucleus mass on the radiative absorption cross sections are examined using per…
We present precise relative radial velocity (RV) measurements for the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star 33 Librae measured from high resolution data spanning the wavelength interval 5000--6200 A. We find that pulsational radial velocity amplitude determined over a broad wavelength range (~100 A) depends on the spectral region that is examined and can be as high as 60 m/s at 5600 A and as low as 7 m/s in the 5900 A region. RV measurements of individual spectral lines can show even higher RV amplitudes. The acoustic cross-sections of the atmosphere, i.e. the phase and amplitude of the pulsation…
This is to notify colleagues that our ApJ paper and corresponding astro-ph version are being withdrawn. Optical spectroscopy obtained with a 3m class telescope gave no indication of any features in the spectrum of 'GD248B' whatsoever. In addition to our proper motion data and optical photometry, all was consistent with our original interpretation for this object. However, very high SNR optical spectroscopy obtained at the Keck 10m revealed absorption features and points to a background subdwarf K7/M0 star moving at very high velocity with nearly identical proper motion to GD248, but alas, not …
We present an analysis of 40 cool helium-rich white dwarfs found in the Hamburg/ESO survey. They were selected for follow-up spectroscopy because of their U-B colour below -0.18, the absence of strong absorption lines, and a continuum shape similar to that of a quasar. Effective temperatures for individual stars were determined by fitting model atmospheres of nearly pure helium with a small admixture of hydrogen. As a consequence of the selection criteria all but one sample stars have Teff below 20000 K. Four stars clearly show helium and hydrogen lines in their spectra. In the spectra of anot…
Models of the solar transition region made from lines other than those of helium cannot account for the strength of the helium lines. However, the collisional excitation rates of the helium resonance lines are unusually sensitive to the energy of the exciting electrons. Non-thermal motions in the transition region could drive slowly-ionizing helium ions rapidly through the steep temperature gradient, exposing them to excitation by electrons characteristic of higher temperatures than those describing their ionization state. We present the results of calculations which use a more physical repres…
In this work, we present the theoretically expected rates of pulsation period change for V777 Her (DBV) variable stars. To this end we employ new evolutionary models representative of pulsating DB white dwarf stars computed in a self-consistent way with the predictions of time-dependent element diffusion. At the hot edge of the DB instability strip, the envelopes of the models are characterized by a diffusion-induced double-layered chemical structure. We compute the numerical values of rates of period change by solving the equations of linear, adiabatic, nonradial stellar oscillations. We exam…
We present an improved version of the method of photometric mode identification of Heynderickx et al. (1994). Our new version is based on the inclusion of precise non-adiabatic eigenfunctions determined in the outer stellar atmosphere according to the formalism recently proposed by Dupret et al.(2002). Our improved photometric mode identification technique is therefore no longer dependent on ad hoc parameters for the non-adiabatic effects. It contains the complete physical conditions of the outer atmosphere of the star, provided that rotation does not play a key role. We apply our improved met…
We are searching for new He atmosphere white dwarf pulsators (DBVs) based on the newly found white dwarf stars from the spectra obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. DBVs pulsate at hotter temperature ranges than their better known cousins, the H atmosphere white dwarf pulsators (DAVs or ZZ Ceti stars). Since the evolution of white dwarf stars is characterized by cooling, asteroseismological studies of DBVs give us opportunities to study white dwarf structure at a different evolutionary stage than the DAVs. The hottest DBVs are thought to have neutrino luminosities exceeding their photon l…
A detailed analysis of the very cool white dwarfs SDSS 1337+00 and LHS 3250 is presented. Model atmosphere calculations with improved collision-induced absorptions by molecular hydrogen indicate that a pure hydrogen composition can be ruled out, and that the strong infrared absorption observed in these cool stars is better explained in terms of collisions of H2 with neutral helium. It is shown that even though the overall shape of the observed energy distributions can be reproduced reasonably well with helium-rich models, the peak of the energy distribution near 6000 A is always predicted too …
We present a detailed analysis of a large spectroscopic and photometric sample of DZ white dwarfs based on our latest model atmosphere calculations. We revise the atmospheric parameters of the trigonometric parallax sample of Bergeron, Leggett, & Ruiz (12 stars) and analyze 147 new DZ white dwarfs discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The inclusion of metals and hydrogen in our model atmosphere calculations leads to different atmospheric parameters than those derived from pure helium models. Calcium abundances are found in the range from log (Ca/He) = -12 to -8. We also find that fits of…
We investigate the evolution of cooling helium atmosphere white dwarfs using a full evolutionary code, specifically developed for following the effects of element diffusion and gravitational settling on white dwarf cooling. The major difference between this work and previous work is that we use more recent opacity data from the OPAL project. Since, in general, these opacities are higher than those available ten years ago, at a given effective temperature, convection zones go deeper than in models with older opacity data. Thus convective dredge-up of observationally detectable carbon in helium …
We explore different evolutionary scenarios to explain the helium deficiency observed in H1504+65, the most massive known PG1159 star. We concentrate mainly on the possibility that this star could be the result of mass loss shortly after the born-again and during the subsequent evolution through the [WCL] stage. This possibility is sustained by recent observational evidence of extensive mass-loss events in Sakurai's object and is in line with the recent finding that such mass losses give rise to PG1159 models with thin helium-rich envelopes and large rates of period change, as demanded by the …
PG 1605+072 has unique pulsational properties amongst the members of the new class of pulsating sdB (EC 14026) stars. It has the longest periods and the richest, most puzzling frequency spectrum (55 periods). We present a quantitative analysis of a Keck HIRES spectrum using NLTE and LTE model atmospheres. Atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, log(He/H)), metal abundances, and the rotational velocity are determined. He, C, N and O are subsolar as well as the intermediate mass elements Mg and Si, whereas Ne and Fe are solar. This abundance pattern is caused by diffusion. PG 1605+072 displays cons…
Material accreted onto a neutron star can stably burn in steady state only when the accretion rate is high (typically super-Eddington) or if a large flux from the neutron star crust permeates the outer atmosphere. For such situations we have analyzed the stability of nonradial oscillations, finding one unstable mode for pure helium accretion. This is a shallow surface wave which resides in the helium atmosphere above the heavier ashes of the ocean. It is excited by the increase in the nuclear reaction rate during the oscillations, and it grows on the timescale of a second. For a slowly rotatin…
HeH$^+$ is found to be the dominant positive ion over a wide range of temperatures and densities relevant to helium rich white dwarfs. The inclusion of HeH$^+$ in ionization equilibrium computations increases the abundance of free electrons by a significant factor. For temperatures below 8000 K, He$^-$ free-free absorption is increased by up to a factor of 5, by the inclusion of HeH$^+$. Illustrative model atmospheres and spectral energy distributions are computed, which show that HeH$^+$ has a strong effect upon the density and pressure structure of helium rich white dwarfs with teff < 8000 K…
Abundance analysis of the cool extreme helium (EHe) star LSS 3378 is presented. The abundance analysis is done using LTE line formation and LTE model atmospheres constructed for EHe stars. The atmosphere of LSS 3378 shows evidence of H-burning, He-burning, and s-process nucleosynthesis. The derived abundances of iron-peak and alpha-elements indicate absence of selective fractionation or any other processes that can distort chemical composition of these elements. Hence, the Fe abundance (log epsilon(Fe) = 6.1) is adopted as an initial metallicity indicator. The measured abundances of LSS 3378 a…
White dwarfs represent the endpoint of stellar evolution for stars with initial masses between approximately 0.07 msun and 8-10 msun, where msun is the mass of the Sun (more massive stars end their life as either black holes or neutron stars). The theory of stellar evolution predicts that the majority of white dwarfs have a core made of carbon and oxygen, which itself is surrounded by a helium layer and, for ~80 per cent of known white dwarfs, by an additional hydrogen layer. All white dwarfs therefore have been traditionally found to belong to one of two categories: those with a hydrogen-rich…
We studied the class of DB white dwarf stars, using re-calibrated UV spectra for thirty four DBs obtained with the IUE satellite. By comparing the observed energy distributions with model atmospheres, we simultaneously determine spectroscopic distances (d), effective temperature (Teff), and surface gravities (log g). Using parallax measurements and previous determinations of Teff and log g from optical spectra, we can study whether the atmospheres of eleven DB stars are consistent with pure He or have a small amount of H contamination. We also report on our observations of seventeen stars with…
We present a detailed calculation of model atmospheres for DA white dwarfs. Our atmosphere code solves the atmosphere structure in local thermodynamic equilibrium with a standard partial linearization technique, which takes into account the energy transfer by radiation and convection. This code incorporates recent improved and extended data base of collision induced absorption by molecular hydrogen. We analyse the thermodynamic structure and emergent flux of atmospheres in a range 2500 < Teff < 60000$ K and 6.5 < log g < 9.0. Bolometric correction and colour indices are provided for a subsampl…
Three members of the new class of pulsating sdB stars (sdBV or EC 14026 stars) are analysed from Keck HIRES spectra using line blanketed NLTE and LTE model atmospheres. Atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, He/H), metal abundances and rotational velocities are determined. As is typical for sdB stars, all programme stars are found to be helium deficient, with a He abundance ranging from 1/80 solar for Feige 48 to 1/3 solar for PG 1219+534, probably due to diffusion. Most metals are also depleted. The abundances of C, O, Ne, Mg, Al and Si in the high gravity programme stars KPD 2109+4401 and PG 1…
We present time-resolved optical spectrophotometry of the pulsating hydrogen atmosphere (DA) white dwarf G 117-B15A. We find three periodicities in the pulsation spectrum (215s, 272s, and 304s) all of which have been found in earlier studies. By comparing the fractional wavelength dependence of the pulsation amplitudes (chromatic amplitudes) with models, we confirm a previous report that the strongest mode, at 215s, has l=1. The chromatic amplitude for the 272s mode is very puzzling, showing an increase in fractional amplitude with wavelength that cannot be reproduced by the models for any l a…
This paper reviews the results obtained so far with the newly developed tomographic technique, which probes the velocity field across the atmosphere of long-period variable (LPV) stars. The method cross-correlates the optical spectrum with numerical masks constructed from synthetic spectra and probing layers of increasing depths. This technique reveals that the line doubling often observed in LPV stars around maximum light is the signature of the shock wave propagating in the atmosphere of these pulsating stars. Applications to the Mira variables RT Cyg and RY Cep are presented, revealing the …
In this paper we report on the real nature of the star HD 145792, classified as He weak in {\it ``The General Catalogue of Ap and Am stars''}. By means of FEROS@ESO1.52m high resolution spectroscopic data, we refined the atmospheric parameters of the star, obtaining: T$_{\rm eff}$ = 14400 $\pm$ 400 K, $\log g$ = 4.06 $\pm$ 0.08 and $ξ$ = 0 $^{+0.6}$ km s$^{-1}$. These values resulted always lower than those derived by different authors with pure photometric approaches. Using our values we undertook an abundance analysis with the aim to derive, for the first time, the chemical pattern of the st…
The helium-atmosphere (DB) white dwarfs are commonly thought to be the descendants of the hotter PG 1159 stars, which initially have uniform He/C/O atmospheres. In this evolutionary scenario, diffusion builds a pure He surface layer which gradually thickens as the star cools. In the temperature range of the pulsating DB white dwarfs (T_eff ~ 25,000 K) this transformation is still taking place, allowing asteroseismic tests of the theory. Objective global fitting of our updated double-layered envelope models to recent observations of the pulsating DB star CBS 114, and to existing observations of…
We investigate the potential of multi-colour photometry for partial mode identification in both long- and short-period variable subdwarf B stars. The technique presented is based on the fact that the frequency dependence of an oscillation's amplitude and phase bears the signature of the mode's degree index l, among other things. Unknown contributing factors can be eliminated through the evaluation of the amplitude ratios and phase differences arising from the brightness variation in different wavebands, theoretically enabling the inference of the degree index from observations in two or more b…
