We report the experimental observation of an enhancement in the yield of high-order harmonics using an array of gas jets as the source medium. By comparing the experimental outcome for jet arrays of different spacings with the predicted harmonic intensity in the case of slit sources of equivalent lengths, we clearly show how the periodic modulation of the gas density can improve the harmonic yield. This behavior may attributed to a quasi-phase-matching effect which increases the length of coherent harmonic build-up during propagation by partially counteracting the dephasing induced by free electrons.
It is demonstrated by single-atom simulations that X-ray signals in the 3.4 to 4 keV region from an 8 micron laser driven high harmonic generation can be increased by more than two orders of magnitude when a single-cycle pulse centered at 800 nm is added. The ionization probability of a helium atom by the two-pulse field is set to 4.56x10^-5, which is needed for balancing the index of refraction of free electrons with that of neutral helium atoms to achieve phase matching.
Resonances in the photo-absorption spectrum of the generating medium can modify the spectrum of high order harmonics. In particular, window-type Fano resonances can reduce photo-absorption within a narrow spectral region and, consequently, lead to an enhanced emission of high-order harmonics in absorption-limited generation conditions. For high harmonic generation in argon it is shown that the 3s3p6 np 1P1 window resonances (n=4,5,6) give rise to enhanced photon yield. In particular, the 3s3p6 4p 1P1 resonance at 26.6 eV allows a relative enhancement up to a factor of 30 compared to the charac…
Enhancing high harmonic generation in a short-pulse two-color laser field by controlling the atomic-electron subcycle detachment and acceleration dynamics
High harmonic generation (HHG) provides a flexible framework for the development of coherent light sources in the extreme-ultraviolet and soft x-ray regimes. However it suffers from low conversion efficiencies as the control of the HHG spectral and temporal characteristics requires manipulating electron trajectories on attosecond time scale. The phase matching mechanism has been employed to selectively enhance specific quantum paths leading to HHG. A few important fundamental questions remain open, among those how much of the enhancement can be achieved by the single-emitter and what is the ro…
Second-order nonlinear optical processes do not manifest in the bulk of centrosymmetric materials, but may occur in the angstroms-thick layer at surfaces. At such length-scales, quantum mechanical effects come into play which could be crucial for an accurate description of plasmonic systems. In this article, we develop a theoretical model based on the quantum hydrodynamic description to study free-electron nonlinear dynamics in plasmonic systems. Our model predicts strong resonances induced by the spill-out of electron density at the metal surface. We show that these resonances can boost secon…
There is an active demand to develop efficient nanoscale nonlinear sources for applications in photonic circuitry, quantum optics and biosensing. To this end, plasmonic systems have been utilized to boost the nonlinear signal generation, however high efficiencies of frequency conversion for realistic applications remain a challenge. Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) nanocavities are good candidates for strongly concentrating the fields at the nanoscale to enhance the optical nonlinearities, however they typically suffer from the requirement to have a quadrupolar resonance at the emission wavelength.…
High harmonic generation (HHG) from condensed matter phase holds promise to promote future cutting-edge research in the emerging field of attosecond nanoscopy. The key for the progress of the field relies on the capability of the existing schemes to enhance the harmonic yield and to push the photon energy cutoff to the extreme ultraviolet (XUV, 10-100 eV) regime and beyond towards the spectral "water window" region (282-533 eV). Here, we demonstrate a coherent control scheme of HHG, which we show to give rise to quantum modulations in the XUV region. The control scheme is based on exploring su…
Second harmonic generation (SHG) with a material of large transparency is an attractive way of generating coherent light sources at exotic wavelength range such as VUV, UV and visible light. It is of critical importance to improve nonlinear conversion efficiency in order to find practical applications in quantum light source and high resolution nonlinear microscopy, etc. Here an enhanced SHG with conversion efficiency up to the order of 0.01% at SH wavelength of 282 nm under 11 GW/cm2 pump power via the excitation of anapole in lithium niobite (LiNbO3, or LN) nanodisk through the dominating d3…
Recent progresses in femtosecond ytterbium-doped fiber laser technology areopening new perspectives in strong field physics and attosecond science. Highorder harmonic generation from these systems is particularly interesting because it provides high flux beams of ultrashort extreme ultraviolet radiation. A lot of efforts have been devoted to optimize the macroscopic generation parameters. Here we investigate the possibility of enhancing the single-atom response by producing high-harmonics from the second, third and fourth harmonics of a turnkey Yb-fiber laser at 1030 nm. We show that the harmo…

We report the realization and characterization of parametric amplification in high harmonic generation around 100 eV using He gas in a double gas jet arrangement. The delay of the seed XUV pulse with respect to the amplifier gas jet was scanned by changing the distance between the gas jets. Experiments and numerical calculations show that parametric amplification occurs within a temporal window of several optical cycles. Strong correlation between the seed and amplifier was observed in a shorter, few optical cycles delay range, which appeared as a modulation of the XUV intensity with an unexpe…
We demonstrate a new high-order harmonic generation mechanism reaching the `water window' spectral region in experiments with multi-terawatt femtosecond lasers irradiating gas jets. A few hundred harmonic orders are resolved, giving uJ/sr pulses. Harmonics are collectively emitted by an oscillating electron spike formed at the joint of the boundaries of a cavity and bow wave created by a relativistically self-focusing laser in underdense plasma. The spike sharpness and stability are explained by catastrophe theory. The mechanism is corroborated by particle-in-cell simulations.
High-order harmonic generation with bicircular fields - the combination of counter-rotating circularly polarized pulses at different frequencies - results in a series of short-wavelength XUV harmonics with alternating circular polarizations, and experiments show that there is an asymmetry in the emission between the two helicities: a slight one in helium, and a larger one in neon and argon, where the emission is carried out by p-shell electrons. Here we analyze this asymmetry by switching to a rotating frame in which the field is linearly polarized; this induces an effective magnetic field whi…
High-harmonic generation in two-colour ($ω-2ω$) counter-rotating circularly polarised laser fields opens the path to generate isolated attosecond pulses and attosecond pulse trains with controlled ellipticity. The generated harmonics have alternating helicity, and the ellipticity of the generated attosecond pulse depends sensitively on the relative intensities of two adjacent, counter-rotating harmonic lines. For the $s$-type ground state, such as in Helium, the successive harmonics have nearly equal amplitude, yielding isolated attosecond pulses and attosecond pulse trains with linear polaris…
We explore photon vortex generation in synchrotron radiations from a spiral moving electron under a uniform magnetic field along z-axis using Landau quantization. The obtained wave-function of the photon vortecies is the eigen-state of the z-component of the total angular momentum (zTAM). In m-th harmonic radiations, individual photons are the eigen-state of zTAM of m. This is consistent with previous studies. Using the presently obtained wave-functions we calculate the decay widths and the energy spectra under extremely strong magnetic fields of 10^12 - 10^13 G, which are observed in astrophy…
Resonant metasurfaces are an attractive platform for enhancing the non-linear optical processes, such as second harmonic generation (SHG), since they can generate very large local electromagnetic fields while relaxing the phase-matching requirements. Here, we take this platform a step closer to the practical applications by demonstrating visible range, continuous wave (CW) SHG. We do so by combining the attractive material properties of gallium phosphide with engineered, high quality-factor photonic modes enabled by bound states in the continuum. For the optimum case, we obtain efficiencies ar…
We investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from noble gas clusters in a supersonic gas jet. To identify the contribution of harmonic generation from clusters versus that from gas monomers, we measure the high-order harmonic output over a broad range of the total atomic number density in the jet (from 3*10^16 cm^{-3} to 3x10^18 cm{-3}) at two different reservoir temperatures (303 K and 363 K). For the firrst time in the evaluation of the harmonic yield in such measurements, the variation of the liquid mass fraction, g, versus pressure and temperature is taken into consideration, which …
In [I.R. Khairulin et al., submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.] we propose a method for amplifying a train of sub-femtosecond pulses of circularly or elliptically polarized extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation, constituted by high-order harmonics of an infrared (IR) laser field, in a neon-like active medium of a plasma-based X-ray laser, additionally irradiated with a replica of a fundamental frequency laser field used to generate harmonics, and show the possibility of maintaining or enhancing the ellipticity of high-harmonic radiation during its amplification. In the present paper we describe this p…

The spectroscopic techniques for time-resolved fine analysis of matter require coherent X-ray radiation with femtosecond duration and high average brightness. Seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), which use the frequency up-conversion of an external seed laser to improve temporal coherence, are ideal for providing fully coherent soft X-ray pulses. However, it is difficult to operate seeded FELs at a high repetition rate due to the limitations of present state-of-the-art laser systems. Here, we report the novel self-modulation method for enhancing laser-induced energy modulation, thereby signific…
