Tracks and isochrones have been computed in the range of initial masses 0.15 - 20 Mo for a grid of 39 chemical compositions with the metal content Z between 0.0001 and 0.070, and helium content Y between 0.23 and 0.46. The Padova stellar evolution code has been implemented with updated physics. New synthetic TP-AGB models allow the extension of stellar models and isochrones until the end of the thermal pulses along the AGB. Software tools for the bidimensional interpolation (in Y and Z) of the tracks have been tuned. This first paper presents tracks for low mass stars (from 0.15 to 2.5 Mo) with scaled-solar abundances and the corresponding isochrones from very old ages down to about 1 Gyr. Tracks and isochrones are made available in tabular form for the adopted grid of chemical compositions in the plane Z-Y. An interactive web interface will allow users to obtain isochrones of whatever chemical composition and also simulated stellar populations with different Y(Z) helium-to-metal enrichment laws.
We present a large set of theoretical isochrones, whose distinctive features mostly reside on the greatly improved treatment of the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phase. Essentially, we have coupled the TP-AGB tracks described in Paper I, at their stages of pre-flash quiescent H-shell burning, with the evolutionary tracks for the previous evolutionary phases from Girardi et al. (2000). Theoretical isochrones for any intermediate value of age and metallicity are then derived by interpolation in the grids. We take care that the isochrones keep, to a good level of detail, the …
The focus of this study is on the treatment of those stellar regions immediately adjacent to convective zones. The results of hydrodynamical simulations by Freytag et al. (1996, A&A313,497) show that the motion of convective elements extends well beyond the boundary of the convectively unstable region. We have applied their parametrized description of the corresponding velocities to the treatment of overshoot in stellar evolution calculations up to the AGB (Pop.I, M_zams=3M_sun).
We present a large grid of stellar evolutionary tracks, which are suitable to modelling star clusters and galaxies by means of population synthesis. The tracks are presented for the initial chemical compositions [Z=0.0004, Y=0.23], [Z=0.001, Y=0.23], [Z=0.004, Y=0.24], [Z=0.008, Y=0.25], [Z=0.019, Y=0.273] (solar composition), and [Z=0.03, Y=0.30]. They are computed with updated opacities and equation of state, and a moderate amount of convective overshoot. The range of initial masses goes from 0.15 M_sun to 7 M_sun, and the evolutionary phases extend from the zero age main sequence (ZAMS) til…
We present a brief summary of the ISO survey of AGB stars in 8 populous intermediate age clusters of the Magellanic Clouds. Totally, more than 100 AGB and RGB stars were observed at 4.5, 6.7 and 12 $μ$m. We introduce a new method to estimate effective temperatures of oxygen-rich AGB stars, and derive precise bolometric magnitudes and effective temperatures for a large population of AGB objects in both LMC and SMC. The derived stellar parameters are used to construct observed HR diagrams which are employed further to estimate cluster ages using the isochrone fitting. We show that proposed metho…
We present a study of the stellar content of the open cluster M67. We have computed new evolutionary sequences of stellar models with solar abundance that cover all phases of evolution from the Zero-Age Main Sequence to the bright end of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). We examine the fit between the calculated and the observed red giant branch (RGB) in particular, and discuss factors that most influence its quality. The distinct color gap between the RGB and the clump giants is compared with the temperature gap between the He-burning tracks and the computed 5 Gyr isochrone. This purely diff…
Detailed atmospheric abundances have been calculated for a sample of A-G supergiant stars with IR fluxes and/or high galactic latitudes. HD 172481 and HD 158616 show clear indications of being post-AGB stars that have experienced third dredge-up. HD 158616 is carbon-rich while the abundance pattern of HD 172481 and its large Li enhancement gives support to the hot bottom burning scenario that explains paucity of carbon-rich stars among AGB stars. HD 172324 is very likely a hot post-AGB star that shows a strong carbon deficiency. HD 725, HD 218753 and HD 331319 also appear to be evolved objects…
The discrepancy between the Pleiades cluster distance based on Hipparcos parallaxes and main sequence fitting is investigated on the basis of Stromgren photometry of F-type stars. Field stars with the same metallicity as the Pleiades have been selected from the m1 index and a technique has been developed to locate the ZAMS of these field stars in color-magnitude diagrams based on the color/temperature indices b-y, v-y, and beta. Fitting the Pleiades to these ZAMS relations results in a distance modulus of 5.61+/-0.03 mag in contrast to the Hipparcos modulus of 5.36+/-0.06 mag. Hence, we cannot…
We report on a multi-epoch study of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy, made with the Infrared Survey Facility, over an area of about 42'x42'. The colour-magnitude diagram shows a broad well-populated giant branch with a tip that slopes down-wards from red to blue, as might be expected given Fornax's known range of age and metallicity. The extensive AGB includes seven Mira variables and ten periodic semi-regular variables. Five of the seven Miras are known to be carbon rich. Their pulsation periods range from 215 to 470 days, indicating a range of initial masses. Three of the Fornax Miras are …
In this paper, we discuss how the integrated properties of intermediate-age single burst population, especially in the near-infrared, behave as a function of age and metallicity. Our models take into account all stellar evolutionary phases that affect the evolution of the integrated optical and near-infrared spectrum of such a population. Particular care was dedicated to the Asymptotic Giant Brach stars, which can be dominant at near-infrared wavelengths. First we present new synthetic model that takes into account the relevant physical processes that control the evolution through the thermall…
We present uvbybeta CCD photometry of the central region of the double cluster h and chi Persei. We identify 350 stars, of which 214 were not included in Oosterhof catalogue. Our magnitude limit V=16.5 allows us to reach early F spectral type and obtain very accurate fits to the ZAMS. We derive reddening values of E(b-y)=0.44+-0.02 for h Persei and E(b-y)=0.39+-0.05 for chi Persei. From the ZAMS fitting, we derive distance moduli V0-Mv=11.66+-0.20 and V0-Mv=11.56+-0.20 for h and chi Persei respectively. These values are perfectly compatible with both clusters being placed at the same distance …
The upper Asymptotic Giant Branch is populated with oxygen rich and carbon rich Long Period Variables. These stars are essential contributors to the near-IR light of intermediate age stellar populations. Individual observed spectra of LPVs are so diverse that they cannot be used directly in the synthesis of galaxy spectra. In this paper, the library of individual spectra of Lancon and Wood (2000) is used to construct averages that can be incorporated conveniently in population synthesis work. The connection between such spectra and stellar evolution tracks is discussed [...]. For instance, we …
We present new synthetic models of the TP-AGB evolution. They are computed for 7 values of initial metal content (Z from 0.0001 to 0.03) and for initial masses between 0.5 and 5.0 Msun, thus extending the low- and intermediate-mass tracks of Girardi et al. (2000) until the beginning of the post-AGB phase. The calculations are performed by means of a synthetic code that incorporates many recent improvements, among which we mention: (1) the use of detailed and revised analytical relations to describe the evolution of quiescent luminosity, inter-pulse period, third dredge-up, hot bottom burning, …
We reexamine the theoretical instability domain of pulsating PG1159 stars (GW Vir variables). We performed an extensive g-mode stability analysis on PG1159 evolutionary models with stellar masses ranging from 0.530 to 0.741 Mo for which the complete evolutionary stages of their progenitors from the ZAMS, through the thermally pulsing AGB and born-again phases to the domain of the PG1159 stars have been considered. We found that pulsations in PG1159 stars are excited by the kappa-mechanism due to partial ionization of carbon and oxygen, and that no composition gradients are needed between the s…
Deep J, H, and K images are used to probe the evolved stellar contents in the central regions of the Sculptor group galaxies NGC55, NGC300, and NGC7793. The brightest stars are massive red supergiants (RSGs) with K ~ 15 - 15.5. The peak RSG brightness is constant to within ~0.5 mag in K, suggesting that NGC55, NGC300, and NGC7793 are at comparable distances. Comparisons with bright RSGs in the Magellanic Clouds indicate that the difference in distance modulus with respect to the LMC is = 7.5. A rich population of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, which isochrones indicate have ages between …
We aim to identify the stellar populations (mostly red giants and young stars) detected in the ISOGAL survey at 7 and 15micron towards a field (LN45) in the direction l=-45, b=0.0. The sources detected in the survey of the Galactic plane by the Infrared Space Observatory are characterized based on colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams. We combine the ISOGAL catalog with the data from surveys such as 2MASS and GLIMPSE. Interstellar extinction and distance are estimated using the red clump stars detected by 2MASS in combination with the isochrones for the AGB/RGB branch. Absolute magnitude…
A new set of evolutionary synthesis spectra are presented for {\bf S}imple {\bf S}tellar {\bf P}opulations ({\bf SSP}s) covering ranges in metallicity from $ 0.02 \leq Z/Z_{\odot} \leq 2.5$ and ages from $4\cdot 10^6$ yr $\leq t \leq 16$ Gyr. They are based on the most recent isochrones from the Padova group that extend earlier models by the inclusion of the thermal pulsing AGB phase for stars in the mass range $2 M_{\odot} \leq m \leq 7 M_{\odot}$ in accordance with the fuel consumption theorem. We show that with respect to earlier models, inclusion of the TP-AGB phase leads to significant ch…
We extend to lower metallicities recent evolutionary computations devoted to Magellanic Clouds stars, presenting and discussing new stellar models with Z=0.0002, 0.0004, 0.0006, 0.001 and suitable assumptions about the original He content. As in the previous paper, evolutionary results are compared with observational data to properly calibrate the assumptions about the efficiency of the surface convection. On this basis, we follow the evolution of stellar models in the mass range 0.6 to 11Mo from the Main Sequence (MS) to the C ignition or the onset of thermal pulses in the advanced Asymptotic…
We have investigated the spectro-photometric properties of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and their contribution to the integrated infrared emission in simple stellar populations (SSP). Adopting analytical relations describing the evolution of these stars in the HR diagram and empirical relations for the mass-loss rate and the wind terminal velocity, we were able to model the effects of the dusty envelope around these stars, with a minimal number of parameters. We computed isochrones at different age and initial metal content. We compare our models with existing infrared colors of M g…
Carbon stars are known to exhibit systematically redder near-infrared colours with respect to M-type stars. In the near-infrared colour-magnitude diagrams provided by the 2MASS and DENIS surveys, the LMC C-type stars draw a striking red tail, well separated from the sequences of O-rich giants. So far, this conspicuous feature has been absent from any set of available isochrones, even the few existing ones that include the TP-AGB evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars. To investigate such issue we simulate the complete 2MASS Ks vs.(J-Ks) data towards the LMC by means of a population synt…
A study of the stellar population of the M31 spiral arm around OB association A24 was carried out based on the photometric data obtained from deep V and JHK imaging. The luminosity function was obtained for -7 <~ Mbol <~ -3.5 by applying the extinction correction corresponding to Av=1 and the bolometric correction BC(K) as an empirical function of (J-K)o. In comparing the observed color-luminosity diagrams with semitheoretical isochrones modified for the dust-shell effects, we found the young population of t <~ 30 Myr with supergiants of Mbol <~ -5, the bulk of the intermediate-age population …
In this work we analyse the role of low- and intermediate-mass stars in contributing to the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium. First we present new sets of stellar yields basing on the results of updated evolutionary calculations, which extend from the ZAMS up to the end of the AGB phase (Girardi et al. 2000; Marigo et al. 1999a). These new yields, that present a significant dependence on metallicity, are then compared to those of other available sets (Renzini & Voli 1981; van de Hoek & Groenewegen 1997). The resulting differences are explained in terms of different model assumpti…
The evolution of a zero metallicity 9 M_s star is computed, analyzed and compared with that of a solar metallicity star of identical ZAMS mass. Our computations range from the main sequence until the formation of a massive oxygen-neon white dwarf. Special attention has been payed to carbon burning in conditions of partial degeneracy as well as to the subsequent thermally pulsing Super-AGB phase. The latter develops in a fashion very similar to that of a solar metallicity 9 M_s star, as a consequence of the significant enrichment in metals of the stellar envelope that ensues due to the so-calle…
LI-LMC 1813 is a dust-enshrouded Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star, located in the small open cluster KMHK 1603 near the rim of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Optical and infrared photometry between 0.5 and 60 micron is obtained to constrain the spectral energy distribution of LI-LMC 1813. Near-infrared spectra unambiguously show it to be a carbon star. Modelling with the radiation transfer code Dusty yields accurate values for the bolometric luminosity, L=1.5 x 10^4 Lsun, and mass-loss rate, Mdot=3.7(+/-1.2) x 10^-5 Msun/yr. On the basis of colour-magnitude diagrams, the age of the cluste…
I briefly introduce a database of models that describe the evolution of star clusters in several broad-band photometric systems. Models are based on the latest Padova stellar evolutionary tracks - now including the alpha-enhanced case and improved AGB models - and a revised library of synthetic spectra from model atmospheres. As of today, we have revised isochrones in Johnson-Cousins-Glass, HST/WFPC2, HST/NICMOS, Thuan-Gunn, and Washington systems. Several other filter sets are included in a preliminary way, like those used by the EIS and SDSS projects. The database contains also integrated ma…
New near-infrared observations of NGC6528 are presented. The JHK observations complement a previous HST/NICMOS data set by Ortolani et al. (2001), in that they sample a larger area, contain a more numerous sample of red giant stars, and include the K band. Also, archival HST data sets (separated by 6.093 years) were used to proper-motion decontaminate the near-infrared sample and extract a clean VJHK catalogue. Using the present wide colour baseline, we compared the cleaned colour-magnitude diagrams of NGC6528 with those of NGC 6553 and NGC104 and derived new estimates of reddening and distanc…
We have made a parametric study of s-process nucleosynthesis in the metal poor ([Fe/H]=-2.7) stars LP625-44 and LP706-7. We find that a high neutron exposure and a small overlap factor are necessary to fit the abundance pattern observed in these two metal-deficient stars, particularly the abundance ratios, Pb/Ba $\approx 1$ and Ba/Sr $\approx 10$. We have also constructed stellar models to better understand how such s-process conditions could arise. We have calculated a 2$M_\odot$ model star with metallicity [Fe/H]=-2.7 from the ZAMS up to AGB phase. We find that for such low-metallicity stars…
It is notoriously difficult to measure the winds of solar-type stars. Traditional spectroscopic and radio continuum techniques are sensitive to mass loss rates at least two to three orders of magnitude stronger than the Sun's relatively feeble wind. Much has been done with these methods to probe the more massive outflows of younger (T Tauri) and older (giant, AGB, supergiant) cool stars, but the main sequence remains terra incognita. This presentation reviews the limits on traditional diagnostics and outlines more recent ideas such as Lyman alpha astrospheres and charge-exchange X-ray emission…
We investigate the pulsational properties of RSG models --- which we evolve from ZAMS masses in the range 10 to $20 \Msun$ --- by means of linear and non-linear calculations. We find period and growth rate of the dominant fundamental mode to increase with increasing luminosity-to-mass ratio $L/M$. Our models obtain relatively large $L/M$ values due to the inclusion of rotation in the evolutionary calculations; however, the largest values are obtained at and beyond central He-exhaustion due to major internal rearrangements of the nuclear burning regions. Our non-linear calculations as well as t…
We present an analysis of the response of a radiative region to waves generated by a convective region of the star; this wave treatment of the classical problem of ``overshooting'' gives extra mixing relative to the treatment traditionally used in stellar evolutionary codes. The interface between convectively stable and unstable regions is dynamic and nonspherical, so that the nonturbulent material is driven into motion, even in the absence of ``penetrative overshoot.'' These motions may be described by the theory of nonspherical stellar pulsations, and are related to motion measured by helios…
We present asteroseismological inferences on RX J2117.1+3412, the hottest known pulsating PG1159 star. Our results are based on full PG1159 evolutionary models recently presented by Miller Bertolami & Althaus (2006). We performed extensive computations of adiabatic g-mode pulsation periods on PG1159 evolutionary models with stellar masses ranging from 0.530 to 0.741 Mo. PG1159 stellar models are extracted from the complete evolution of progenitor stars started from the ZAMS, through the thermally pulsing AGB and born-again phases to the domain of the PG 1159 stars. We constrained the stellar m…
Using the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained F110W (J-band) and F160W (H-band) images of three fields in NGC3379, a nearby normal giant elliptical galaxy. These images resolve individual red giant stars, yielding the first accurate color-magnitude diagrams for a normal luminous elliptical. The photometry reaches 1 magnitude below the red giant branch tip with errors of < 0.2 mags in F110W-F160W. A strong break in the luminosity function at F160W = 23.68 +/- 0.06 is identified as the tip of the red giant branch (RGB)…
