Using numerical diagonalization techniques, we explore the effect of local and bond disorder on the finite temperature spin and thermal conductivities of the one dimensional anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. High-temperature results for local disorder show that the dc conductivties are finite, apart from the uncorrelated - XY case - where dc transport vanishes. Moreover, at strong disorder, we find finite dc conductivities at all temperatures $T$, except T=0. The low frequency conductivities are characterized by a nonanalytic cusp shape. Similar behavior is found for bond disorder.
We study an anisotropic version of the $J_1-J_2$ model with S=1. We find a second order transition from a Néel $Q=(π,π)$ phase to a disordered phase with a spin gap.
We use the two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to study the effects of frustration in Heisenberg models for $S=1/2$ to S=4 in a two-dimensional anisotropic lattice. We find that as in $S=1/2$ studied previously, the system is made of nearly disconnected chains at the maximally frustrated point, $J_d/J_{\perp}=0.5$, i.e., the transverse spin-spin correlations decay exponentially. This leads to the following consequences: (i) all half-integer spins systems are gapless, behaving like a sliding Luttinger liquid as in $S=1/2$; (ii) for integer spins, there is an intermediate disord…
We use a recently proposed perturbative numerical renormalization group algorithm to investigate ground-state properties of a frustrated three dimensional Heisenberg model on an anisotropic lattice. We analyze the ground state energy, the finite size spin gap and the static magnetic structure factor. We find in two dimensions a frustration-induced gapless spin liquid state which separates two magnetically ordered phases. In the spin liquid state, the magnetic structure factor shows evidence that this state is made of nearly disconnected chains. This spin liquid state is unstable against unfrus…
We study a class of disordered continuous classical spin systems including the kagome Heisenberg magnet. While each term in its local Hamiltonian can be independently minimised, we find {\it discrete} degenerate ground states whose number grows exponentially with system size. These states do not exhibit zero-energy `excitations' characteristic of highly frustrated magnets but instead are local minima of the energy landscape, albeit with an anomalously soft excitation spectrum. This represents a spin liquid version of the phenomenon of jamming familiar from granular media and structural glasses…
We study the evolution of magnetic excitations in the disordered two-dimensional antiferromagnet Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4. A gigantic magnetic gap greater than 40 meV opens at x = 0.27 and increases with Ru concentration, rendering the dispersive magnetic excitations in Sr2IrO4 almost momentum independent. Up to a Ru concentration of x = 0.77, both experiments and first-principles calculations show the Ir Jeff = 1/2 state remains intact. The magnetic gap arises from the local interaction anisotropy in the proximity of the Ru disorder. Under the coherent potential approximation, we reproduce the experimen…
Motivated by puzzling characteristics of spin-glass transitions widely observed in pyrochlore-based frustrated materials, we investigate effects of coupling to local lattice distortions in a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the spin-glass transition temperature $\TSG$ is largely enhanced by the spin-lattice coupling, and furthermore, becomes almost independent of $Δ$ in a wide range of the disorder strength $Δ$. The critical property of the spin glass transition is indistinguishable from that of the canonical Heisenber…
Excitation by light pulses enables the manipulation of phases of quantum condensed matter. Here, we photoexcite high-energy holon-doublon pairs as a way to alter the magnetic free energy landscape of the Kitaev-Heisenberg magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$, with the aim to dynamically stabilize a proximate spin liquid phase. The holon-doublon pair recombination through multimagnon emission is tracked through the time-evolution of the magnetic linear dichroism originating from the competing zigzag spin ordered ground state. A small holon-doublon density suffices to reach a spin disordered state. The phase tra…
The $S=1/2$ Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention as an exactly solvable example with a quantum spin liquid ground state. In a properly oriented external magnetic field, chiral Majorana edge modes associated with a quantized thermal Hall conductance emerge, and a distinct spin-disordered phase appears at intermediate field strengths, below the polarized phase. However, since material realizations of Kitaev magnetism invariably display competing exchange interactions, the stability of these exotic phases with respect to additional couplings is a key issue. Here, we report a…
The interplay of different scattering mechanisms can lead to novel effects in transport. We show theoretically that the interplay of weak impurity and Umklapp scattering in spin-1/2 chains leads to a pronounced dip in the magnetic field dependence of the thermal conductivity $κ$ at a magnetic field $B \sim T$. In sufficiently clean samples, the reduction of the magnetic contribution to heat transport can easily become larger than 50% and the effect is predicted to exist even in samples with a large exchange coupling, J >> B, where the field-induced magnetization is small. Qualitatively, our th…
We use a strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG) method and ground-state quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations to study S=1/2 spin chains with random couplings, calculating disorder-averaged spin and dimer correlations. The QMC simulations demonstrate logarithmic corrections to the power-law decaying correlations obtained with the SDRG scheme. The same asymptotic forms apply both for systems with standard Heisenberg exchange and for certain multi-spin couplings leading to spontaneous dimerization in the clean system. We show that the logarithmic corrections arise in the valence-bond (sing…
Only 3% hole doping by Li is sufficient to suppress the long-range antiferromagnetic order in La2CuO4. Spin dynamics in such a disordered state was investigated with measurements of the dynamic magnetic structure factor S(omega,q), using cold neutron spectroscopy, for La2(Cu0.94Li0.06)O4. The S(omega,q) is found to sharply peak at (pi,pi), and its dynamics to be relaxational. Confirming theoretical expectation for the quantum disordered 2D S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the energy scale saturates at a finite value at low temperatures. Possible connection to the ``pseudo spin gap'' phenomeno…
We study the disordered Heisenberg spin chain, which exhibits many body localization at strong disorder, in the weak to moderate disorder regime. A continued fraction calculation of dynamical correlations is devised, using a variational extrapolation of recurrents. Good convergence for the infinite chain limit is shown. We find that the local spin correlations decay at long times as $C \sim t^{-β}$, while the conductivity exhibits a low frequency power law $σ\sim ω^α$. The exponents depict sub-diffusive behavior $ β< 1/2, α> 0 $ at all finite disorders, and convergence to the scaling result, $…
Using the Resonant Valence Bond (RVB) concept and the Schwinger-boson mean field approximation, we investigate a two dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We find that increasing the coupling ratio ($α=J_{y}/J_{x}$), a disordered-ordered phase transition appears beyond a critical value ($α_{c}$). When $α>α_{c}$ there exists a finite $T_{N}$ beyond which an ordered-disordered phase transition occurs, while for $α<α_{c}$ there always exists a gap. Also we find that a decoupling temperature $T_{D}$ exists for 1D and 2D isotropic case, when $T$ approaches $T_{D}$ the RVB order parame…
The spin-1/2 Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain is considered within the perturbative strong-coupling approach, which is developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intradimer and the Ising interdimer couplings. Although the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain exhibits just intermediate plateaux at zero, one-quarter and one-half of the saturation magnetization, the perturbative treatment up to second order stemming from this exactly solvable model additionally corroborates the fractional one-third plateau as well as the gap…
We present large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a two-dimensional (2d) bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with random dimer dilution. In contrast to the exotic scaling scenarios found in many other random quantum systems, the quantum phase transition in this system is characterized by a finite-disorder fixed point with power-law scaling. After accounting for strong corrections to scaling, characterized by a leading irrelevant exponent of ω= 0.48, we find universal, i.e., disorder-independent, critical exponents z=1.310(6) and ν=1.16(3). We discuss the consequences of these findings a…
A novel nonlinear sigma model method is proposed for the two-dimensional J1-J2 model, which is extended to include plaquette-type distortion. The nonlinear sigma model is properly derived without spoiling the original spin degrees of freedom. The method shows that a single disordered phase continuously extends from a frustrated uniform regime to an unfrustrated distorted regime. By the continuity and Oshikawa's commensurability condition, the disordered ground states for the uniform J1-J2 model are plaquette states with four-fold degeneracy.
We study the dynamical response of frustrated, quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets at finite temperatures. We allow for the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We concentrate on a model of weakly coupled planes of anisotropic triangular lattices. Combining exact results for the dynamical response of one dimensional Heisenberg chains with a Random Phase Approximation (RPA) in the frustrated interchain couplings, we calculate the dynamical susceptibility in the disordered phase. We investigate the instability of the disordered phase to the formation of collect…
We present a theory based on Green's function formalism to study magnetism in disordered Heisenberg systems with long range exchange integrals. Disordered Green's function are decoupled within Tyablicov scheme and solved with a CPA method. The CPA method is the extension of Blackmann-Esterling-Beck approach to system with environmental disorder term which uses cumulant summation of the single-site non crossing diagrams. The crucial point is that we are able to treat simultaneously and self-consistently the RPA and CPA loops. It is shown that the summation of s-scattering contribution can alway…
The phase diagram of Kane-Mele-Heisenberg (KMH) model in classical limit~\cite{zare}, contains disordered regions in the coupling space, as the result of to competition among different terms in the Hamiltonian, leading to frustration in finding a unique ground state. In this work we explore the nature of these phase in the quantum limit, for a $S=1/2$. Employing exact diagonalization (ED) in $S_z$ and nearest neighbor valence bond (NNVB) bases, bond and plaquette valence bond mean field theories, We show that the disordered regions are divided into ordered quantum states in the form of plaquet…
Using equivalencies between different models we reduce the model of two spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains crossed at one point to the model of free fermions. The spin-spin correlation function is calculated by summing the perturbation series in the interchain coupling. The result reveals a power law decay with a nonuniversal exponent.
Disordered systems form one of the centrestages of research in many body sciences and lead to a plethora of interesting phenomena and applications. A paradigmatic disordered system consists of an one-dimensional array of quantum spin-1/2 particles, governed by the Heisenberg spin glass Hamiltonian with natural or engineered quenched disordered couplings in an external magnetic field. These systems allow disorder-induced enhancement for bipartite and multipartite observables. Here we show that simultaneous application of independent quenched disorders results in disorder-induced enhancement, wh…
Inelastic neutron scattering is employed to study transverse spin correlations of a Heisenberg $S=1/2$ chain compound in a magnetic field of 7.5 T. The target compound is the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg $S=1/2$ chain material 2(1,4-Dioxane)$\cdot$2(H$_2$O)$\cdot$CuCl$_2$, or CuDCl for short. The validity and the limitations of the scaling relation for the transverse dynamic structure factor are tested, discussed and compared to the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid theory and to Bethe-ansatz results for the Heisenberg model.
We discuss the transition strength between the disordered ground state and the basic low-lying triplet excitation for the Heisenberg chain with alternating exchange based on series expansions in the interdimer interaction up to tenth order. We demonstrate that the wave vector dependence of the simple dimer approximation is strongly modified in higher orders.
A recently derived general formula and older numerical results are combined to deduce the behavior of the transverse correlation exponent for the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain in an applied magnetic field: eta = 1/2 - (2.0)m +O(m^2), where m is the magnetization per site. A comparison with the O(3) non-linear sigma-model is also made.
Imperfections in correlated materials can alter their ground state as well as finite-temperature properties in significant ways. Here, we develop a method based on numerical linked-cluster expansions for calculating exact finite-temperature properties of disordered lattice models directly in the thermodynamic limit. We show that a continuous distribution for disordered parameters can be achieved using a set of carefully chosen discrete modes in the distribution, which allows for the averaging of properties over all disorder realizations. We benchmark our results for thermodynamic properties of…
The effect of a single static impurity on the many-body states and on the spin and thermal transport in the one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg chain at finite temperatures is studied. Whereas the pure Heisenberg model reveals Poisson level statistics and dissipationless transport due to integrability, we show using the numerical approach that a single impurity induces Wigner-Dyson level statistics and at high enough temperature incoherent transport within the chain, whereby the relaxation time and d.c. conductivity scale linearly with length.
The exact amplitude for the asymptotic correlation function in the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is determined: <S^a_0 S^b_r> goes to (-1)^r delta^{ab}(ln r)^{1/2}/[(2 pi)^{3/2}r]. The behaviour of the correlation functions for small xxz anisotropy and the form of finite-size corrections to the correlation function are also analysed.
The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is expected to have an extended symmetry, [SU(2)xSU(2)]/Z 2 , in the infrared limit, whose physical interpretation is that the spin and dimer order parameters form the components of a common 4-dimensional vector. Here we numerically in- vestigate this emergent symmetry using quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a modified Heisenberg chain (the J-Q model) in which the logarithmic scaling corrections of the conventional Heisenberg chain can be avoided. We show how the two- and three-point spin and dimer correlation func- tions approach their forms constrained…
We develop a low-temperature expansion for the finite temperature dynamical structure factor of the spin half Heisenberg chain with alternating nearest neighbour exchange in the limit of strong alternation of the exchange constants. We determine both the broadening of the low lying triplet lines and the contribution of the thermally activated intraband scattering.
We consider the anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain in a transverse magnetic field at zero temperature. We first determine all components of the dynamical structure factor by combining exact results with a mean-field approximation recently proposed by Dmitriev {\it et al}., JETP 95, 538 (2002). We then turn to the small anisotropy limit, in which we use field theory methods to obtain exact results. We discuss the relevance of our results to Neutron scattering experiments on the 1D Heisenberg chain compound ${\rm Cs_2CoCl_4}$.
We overview some recent work and present new results on the ground state properties and the spectrum of excitations of the two-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Spontaneous dimer order is present in the quantum disordered phase of this model. We study the stability and analyze the structure of the spectrum, including the two-particle singlet excitation branch throughout the disordered phase, as well as in the vicinity of the Neel critical point. The variation of the dimer order parameter is also given, and it is argued that near the critical point it reflects the presence of t…
The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ delta-chain (sawtooth chain) with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg basal chain and Ising apical-basal interactions is studied. The basal-apical interactions involve the bond alternation. The limiting cases of the model include the symmetrical delta-chain and the antiferromagnetic chain in the staggered magnetic field. We study ground state properties of the model by the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. The ground state phase diagram as a function of the bond alternation consists of magnetic and various non-magnetic phases. All phases ex…
The Kato-Bloch perturbation formalism is used to present a density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method for strongly anisotropic two-dimensional systems. This method is used to study Heisenberg chains weakly coupled by the transverse couplings $J_{\perp}$ and $J_{d}$ (along the diagonals). An extensive comparison of the renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo results for parameters where the simulations by the latter method are possible shows a very good agreement between the two methods. It is found, by analyzing ground state energies and spin-spin correlation functions, that ther…
We describe a method for calculating dynamical spin-spin correlation functions in the finite isotropic and anisotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models. Our method is able to produce results with high accuracy over the full parameter space.
We present a model compound for the $S$=1/2 ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain composed of the verdazyl-based complex $[$Zn(hfac)$_2]$$[$4-Cl-$o$-Py-V-(4-F)$_2]$. $Ab$ $initio$ MO calculations indicate a predominant ferromagnetic interaction forming an $S$=1/2 ferromagnetic chain. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate a phase transition to an AF order owing to the finite interchain couplings. We explain the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization curve above the phase transition temperature based on the $S$=1/2 ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The magnetization curve in the order…
The stability of the disordered ground state of the classical Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet is studied within extensive Monte Carlo simulations by introducing an additional exchange interaction $J'$ that interpolates between the pyrochlore lattice ($J'=0$) and the face-centered cubic lattice ($J'=J$). It is found that for $J'/J$ as low as $J'/J\ge 0.01$, the system is long range ordered : the disordered ground state of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet is unstable when introducing very small deviations from the pure $J'=0$ limit. Furthermore, it is found that the selected phase is a colli…
Using both exact diagonalizations and diagonalizations in a subset of short-range valence bond singlets, we address the nature of the groundstate of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the square lattice with competing next-nearest and next-next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings (J1-J2-J3 model). A detailed comparison of the two approaches reveals a region along the line (J2+J3)/J1=1/2, where the description in terms of nearest-neighbor singlet coverings is excellent, therefore providing evidence for a magnetically disordered region. Furthermore a careful analysis of dimer-di…
Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, we carry out a large scale numerical calculation for the S=2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. Performing systematic scaling analysis for both the chain length $L$ and the number of optimal states kept in the iterations $m$, the Haldane gap $Δ(2)$ is estimated accurately as $(0.0876\pm0.0013)J$. Our systematic analysis for the S=2 chains not only ends the controversies arising from various DMRG calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, but also sheds light on how to obtain reliable results from the DMRG calculations for other c…
In disordered spin systems with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange, transitions into and out of a magnetic-field-induced ordered phase pass through a unique regime. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the zero-temperature behavior, these intermediate regions are determined to be a Bose-Glass phase. The localization of field-induced triplons causes a finite compressibility and hence glassiness in the disordered phase.
We examine the interplay of interaction and disorder for a Heisenberg spin ladder system with random fields. We identify many-body localized states based on the entanglement entropy scaling, where delocalized and localized states have volume and area laws, respectively. We first establish the quantum phase transition at a critical random field strength $h_c \sim 8.5\pm 0.5$, where all energy eigenstates are localized beyond that value. Interestingly, the entanglement entropy and fluctuation of the bipartite magnetization show distinct probability distributions which characterize different quan…
Motivated by puzzling spin-glass behaviors observed in many pyrochlore-based magnets, effects of magnetoelastic coupling to local lattice distortions were recently studied by the authors for a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 047204 (2011)]. Here, we extend the analyses with focusing on the critical property of the spin-glass transition which occurs concomitantly with a nematic transition. Finite-size scaling analyses are performed up to a larger system size with 8192 spins to estimate the transition temperature and critical exponents. The exponent…
We investigate real-space localization in the few-particle regime of the XXZ spin-$1/2$ chain with a random magnetic field. Our investigation focuses on the time evolution of the spatial variance of non-equilibrium densities, as resulting for a specific class of initial states, namely, pure product states of densely packed particles. Varying the strength of both particle-particle interactions and disorder, we numerically calculate the long-time evolution of the spatial variance $σ(t)$. For the two-particle case, the saturation of this variance yields an increased but finite localization length…
A mixed Ising-Heisenberg spin system consisting of triangular XXZ-Heisenberg spin clusters assembled into a chain by alternating with Ising spins interacting to all three spins in the triangle is considered. The exact solution of the model is given in terms of the generalized decoration--iteration map and within the transfer-matrix technique. Exact expressions for thermodynamic functions are derived. Ground state phase diagrams, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the system are examined.
The field-induced antiferromagnetic ordering in systems of weakly coupled S=1/2 dimers at zero temperature can be described as a Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet quasiparticles (singlet quasiholes) in the ground state. For the case of a Heisenberg bilayer, it is here shown how the above picture is altered in the presence of site dilution of the magnetic lattice. Geometric randomness leads to quantum localization of the quasiparticles/quasiholes and to an extended Bose-glass phase in a realistic disordered model. This localization phenomenon drives the system towards a quantum-disordered p…
We derive upper bounds for spin velocity in half-integer-spin Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains. We relate these upper bounds to the instability of the gapless state, which is observed in frustrated systems.
We obtain the logarithmic corrections to the dynamic response function and NMR T_1 and T_{2G} rates in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain using perturbative renormalization group in the leading irrelevant operator. The result is compared with NMR experiments in Sr_2CuO_3.
Using the recently introduced adaptive density-matrix renormalization-group method, we study the many spin-spin correlations of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with random coupling constants, namely, the mean value of the bulk and of the end-to-end correlations, the typical value of the bulk correlations, and the distribution of the bulk correlations. Our results are in striking agreement with the predictions of the strong-disorder renormalization group method. We do not find any hint of logarithmic corrections neither in the bulk average correlations, which were recently rep…
We consider a mechanism for competing interactions in alternating Heisenberg spin chains due to the formation of local spin-singlet pairs. The competition of spin-1 and spin-0 states reveals hidden Ising symmetry of such alternating chains.
We investigate the low-temperature properties of the one-dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg model with geometric fluctuations induced by aperiodic but deterministic coupling distributions, involving two parameters. We focus on two aperiodic sequences, the Fibonacci sequence and the 6-3 sequence. Our goal is to understand how these geometric fluctuations modify the physics of the (gapped) Haldane phase, which corresponds to the ground state of the uniform spin-1 chain. We make use of different adaptations of the strong-disorder renormalization-group (SDRG) scheme of Ma, Dasgupta and Hu, widely emplo…
Low energy properties of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with Fibonacci exchange modulation are studied using the real space renormalization group method for strong exchange modulation. It is found that the ground state of this model belongs to a new universality class with logarithmically divergent dynamical exponent which is neither like Fibonacci XY chains nor like XY chains with relevant aperiodicity.
Thermodynamic properties of the quantum Heisenberg spin chains with S = 1/2, 1, and 3/2 are investigated using the transfer-matrix renormalization-group method. The temperature dependence of the magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat, spin-spin correlation length, and several other physical quantities in a zero or finite applied field are calculated and compared. Our data agree well with the Bethe ansatz, exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo results and provide further insight into the quantum effects in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains.

Corrections to the asymptotic correlation function in a Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain are known to vanish slowly (logarithmically) as a function of the distance r or the chain size L. This leads to significant differences with numerical results. We calculate the sub-leading logarithmic corrections to the finite-size correlation function, using renormalization group improved perturbation theory, and compare the result with numerical data.
Excited states of spin-chains play an important role in condensed matter physics. We present a method of calculating the single magnon excited states of the Heisenberg spin-chain that can be efficiently implemented on a quantum processor for small spin chains. Our method involves finding the stationary points of the energy vs wavenumber curve. We implement our method for 4-site and 8-site Heisenberg Hamiltonians using numerical techniques as well as using an IBM quantum processor. Finally, we give an insight into the circuit complexity and scaling of our proposed method.
