Baryons in the massive Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in 1+1 dimensions (the massive chiral Gross-Neveu model) are studied in the limit of an infinite number of flavors. The baryon mass is evaluated for a wide range of bare fermion masses and filling fractions, combining analytical asymptotic expansions with a full numerical Hartree-Fock calculation.
We study a particular class of Abelian gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models with global U_L(N)xU_R(N) symmetry, where N is the number of fermion flavors. We show, by treating the gauge interaction in the ladder approximation and four-fermion interactions in the leading order of the 1/N expansion, that the renormalization-group beta function of the U(1) gauge coupling has ultraviolet stable fixed points for sufficiently large N. This implies the existence of a nontrivial continuum limit.
We consider the "two flavour" Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in the presence of a vector and an axial external chemical potentials and study the phase structure of the model at zero temperature. The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model is often used as a toy replica of QCD and it is therefore interesting to explore the consequences of adding external vector and axial chemical potentials in this model, mostly motivated by claims that such external drivers could trigger a phase where parity could be broken in QCD. We are also motivated by some lattice analysis that attempt to understand the nature of the so-cal…
The dual quark condensate $Σ^{(n)}$ proposed recently as a new order parameter of the spontaneous breaking of the ${\mathbb Z}_3$ symmetry are evaluated by the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, where $n$ are winding numbers. The Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model well reproduces lattice QCD data on $Σ^{(1)}$ measured very lately. The dual quark condensate $Σ^{(n)}$ at higher temperatures is sensitive to the strength of the vector-type four-quark interaction in the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and hence a good quantity to determine the strength.
We propose an axionic QCD string scenario based on the original flux-tube model by Kogut and Susskind, and then incorporate it into a gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Axial anomaly is studied by a new topological coupling from the string side, and by the 't Hooft vortex from the NJL side, respectively. The nontrivial phase distribution of the quark condensate plays an important role in this scenario.
We study inverse magnetic catalysis in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model beyond mean field approximation. The feed-down from mesons to quarks is embedded in an effective coupling constant at finite temperature and magnetic field. While the magnetic catalysis is still the dominant effect at low temperature, the meson dressed quark mass drops down with increasing magnetic field at high temperature due to the dimension reduction of the Goldstone mode in the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme.
A recently proposed new mechanism of D-term triggered dynamical supersymmetry breaking is reviewed. Supersymmetry is dynamically broken by nonvanishing D-term vacuum expectation value, which is realized as a nontrivial solution of the gap equation in the self-consistent approximation as in the case of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and BCS superconductivity.
Various aspects of the Generalised Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model for QCD in four dimensions are reviewed. The properties of mesonic excitations are discussed in detail, with special attention paid to the chiral pion. The spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the vacuum and the effective chiral symmetry restoration in the spectrum of highly excited mesons and baryons are described microscopically.
A detailed analysis is performed for the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model coupled with constant (external) magnetic and/or electric fields in two, three, and four dimensions. The infrared cut-off is essential for a well-defined functional determinant by means of the proper time method. Contrary to the previous observation, the critical coupling remains nonzero even in three dimensions. It is also found that the asymptotic expansion has an excellent matching with the exact value.
The mechanism of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is studied in the Abelian version of the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in four dimensions. The most interesting feature of the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is the appearance of relevant (renormalizable) four-fermion interactions near a critical curve separating a chiral symmetric and a dynamically chiral symmetry broken phase. The first three chapters of the thesis are introductory. Chapter 4 is based on hep-th/9712123. In an attempt to go beyond standard mean field approximations for four-fermion interactions, the 1/N expansion is utili…
We analyze the chiral phase transition of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in the cold and dense region on the lattice developing the Grassmann version of the anisotropic tensor renormalization group algorithm. The model is formulated with the Kogut--Susskind fermion action. We use the chiral condensate as an order parameter to investigate the restoration of the chiral symmetry. The first-order chiral phase transition is clearly observed in the dense region at vanishing temperature with $μ/T\sim O(10^3)$ on a large volume of $V=1024^4$. We also present the results for the equation of state.
In this paper we discuss Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model as a classical model for dynamical mass generation and symmetry breaking. In addition we discuss the possible supersymmetric extensions of this model resulting from interaction terms with four chiral superfields that may be regarded as a supersymmetric generalization of the four-fermion interactions of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. A four-superfield interaction terms can be constructed as either dimension 6 or dimension 5 operators. Through analyzing solutions to the gap equations, we discuss the dynamical generation of superfield Dirac mass, i…
We show that the renormalization group beta functions in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model identically vanish in all order due to the compositeness condition. Accordingly the effective coupling constants are entirely fixed and do not run with the renormalization scale.
A generalization to any dimension of the fermion field transformation which allows to derive the solution of the massless Schwinger model in the path integral framework is identified. New arguments based on this transformation for a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) like model as the low energy limit of a gauge theory in dimension greater than two are presented. Our result supports the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking picture conjectured by Nambu many years ago and the link between QCD, NJL and chiral models.
The infrared dynamics in the (3+1)-dimensional supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a constant magnetic field is studied. While at strong coupling the dynamics in these two models is essentially different, it is shown that the models become equivalent at weak coupling. In particular, at weak coupling, as the strength of the magnetic field goes to infinity, both the supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models are reduced to a continuum set of independent (1+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu models, labeled by the coordinates in the plane perpendicular t…
It is recently shown that in 4D $SU(N)$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type models, the $SU(N)$ symmetry breaking into its special subgroups is not special but much more common than that into the regular subgroups, where the fermions belong to complex representations of $SU(N)$. We perform the same analysis for $SO(N)$ NJL model for various $N$ with fermions belonging to an irreducible spinor representation of $SO(N)$. We find that the symmetry breaking into special or regular subgroups has some correlation with the type of fermion representations; i.e., complex, real, pseudo-real representations.
Dynamical symmetry breaking is investigated for a four-fermion Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in external electromagnetic and gravitational fields. An effective potential is calculated in the leading order of the large-N expansion using the proper-time Schwinger formalism. Phase transitions accompanying a chiral symmetry breaking in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model are studied in detail. A magnetic calalysis phenomenon is shown to exist in curved spacetime but it turns out to lose its universal character because the chiral symmetry is restored above some critical positive value of the spacetime curvatur…
The mean field approach to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is developed systematically. Approximate mean field action is obtained, based on the study of divergencies in the mean field action. A special scalar case of the approximate motion equations is studied and inhomogenouous solutions are discussed. It is shown that the model can have inhomogeneous vacuum configurations which leads to bound fermionic states.
We investigate the renormalization group flow of the Yukawa model with a fixed momentum cutoff at the leading order in 1/N, where N is the number of the fermion species. We demonstrate the scale invariance of coupling constants of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model.
We employ the method of differential regularization to calculate explicitly the one-loop effective action of a bosonized $U_L(3)\times U_R(3)$ extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model consisting of scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial vector fields.
The mass generation in the (3+1)-dimensional supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a constant magnetic field is studied. It is shown that the external magnetic field catalyzes chiral symmetry breaking.
The method of differential regularization is applied to calculate explicitly the one-loop effective potential of a bosonized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model consisting of scalar and pseudoscalar fields. The regularization scheme independent relation for the $σ$ mass sum rule is obtained. This method can be readily applied to extended NJL models with gauge fields.
Inhomogeneous solutions of the gap equation in the mean field approach to Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model are studied. An approximate Ginzburg-Landau-like gap equation is obtained and the domain wall solution is found. Binding of fermions to the domain wall is demonstrated. Compact domain wall with bound fermions is studied and stabilisation by fermion pressure is demonstrated which opens a possibility for existence of "soap bubble" hadronic states.
Using the full conformal bootstrap method an analytic expression is given in d-dimensions for the anomalous dimension of the fermion at O(1/N^3) in a large N expansion of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with SU(2) x SU(2) continuous chiral symmetry.
We write down the anomalous dimensions of the fields of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model or chiral Gross Neveu model with a continuous global chiral symmetry for the two cases $U(1)$ $\times$ $U(1)$ and $SU(M)$ $\times$ $SU(M)$ at $O(1/N^2)$ in a $1/N$ expansion.
The mechanism of a confining medium is investigated within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) approach. It is shown that a confining medium can be realized in the bosonized phase of the NJL model due to vacuum fluctuations of both fermion and Higgs (scalar fermion-antifermion collective excitation) fields. In such an approach there is no need to introduce Dirac strings.
We argue that the spontaneous breakdown of symmetry in the chirally symmetric Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model which was supposed to illustrate the origin of the low mass of pions in hadron physics does not occur due to strong fluctuations in the sigma - pi field space. Although quarks acquire a constituent mass, sigma and pi turn out to have equal heavy masses of the order of the constituent quark mass.
We analyze the presence of an ambiguity in the pion electromagnetic form factor within a renormalizable version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We found out that the ambiguity present on the evaluation of the form factor decouples from its transversal part, confirming previous results obtained ignoring the ambiguity. This result helps us to understand the role played by finite but undetermined quantities in Quantum Field Theories.
The condensation of a dual-vector field is investigated in the dual Monopole Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with dual Dirac strings. The condensate of a dual-vector field is calculated as a functional of a shape of a dual Dirac string. The obtained result is compared with the gluon condensate calculated in a QCD sum rules approach and on lattice.
We discuss how inflation can emerge from a four-fermion interaction induced by torsion. Inflation can arise from coupling torsion to Standard Model fermions, without any need of introducing new scalar particles beyond the Standard Model. Within this picture, the inflaton field can be a composite field of the SM-particles and arises from a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio mechanism in curved space-time, non-minimally coupled with the Ricci scalar. The model we specify predicts small value of the r-parameter, namely $r\sim 10^{-4} ÷10^{-2}$, which nonetheless would be detectable by the next generation of expe…
The phase structure of the $d=3$ Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in curved spacetime is considered to leading order in the $1/N$--expansion and in the linear curvature approximation. The possibility of a curvature-induced first-order phase transition is investigated numerically. The dynamically generated fermionic mass is calculated for some values of the curvature.
We investigate the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in curved spacetime at the large $N_c$ limit and in slow-roll approximation. The model can be described by the renormalization group corrected gauge-Higgs-Yukawa theory with the corresponding compositeness conditions. Evaluating the renormalization group (RG) improved effective action, we show that such model can produce CMB fluctuations and find inflationary parameters: spectral index, tensor-to-scalar-ratio and running of the spectral index. We demonstrate that the model can naturally satisfy the Planck 2015 data and maybe considered as an a…
We review various connections between condensed matter systems with the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model and nonlinear sigma models. The field theoretical description of interacting systems offers a systematic framework to describe the dynamical generation of condensates. Resent findings of a duality between the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model and the nonlinear sigma model enables us to investigate various properties underlying both theories. In this review we mainly focus on inhomogeneous condensations in static situations. The various methods developed in the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model reveal the inhomogeneo…
In order to investigate dynamical symmetry breaking, we study Nambu$\cdot$Jona-Lasinio model in the large-N limit in the stochastic quantization method. Here in order to solve Langevin equation, we impose specified initial conditions and construct ``effective Langevin equation'' in the large-N limit and give the same non-perturbative results as path-integral approach gives. Moreover we discuss stability of vacuum by means of ``effective potential''.
The Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with the mass matrix which appears in a deconstruction model is investigated. We consider two models. In Model A, a mass matrix belonging to a type used in dimensional deconstruction is introduced. In Model B, the four-fermion interaction has a structure of the matrix of the type of dimensional deconstruction. In these models, we find that generation of a dynamical fermion mass spectrum occurs in a strong coupling case.
We study a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type model with two-flavor quark matter in $β$-equilibrium. It turns out that the system develops instabilities in the dispersion relations of the diquark fields, i.e., the velocity squared $v^2$ becomes negative in a certain region of the electron chemical potential. The critical point is the same as that of the chromomagnetic instability. The results imply the existence of spatially inhomogeneous diquark condensates in the genuine vacuum. We also discuss gauge equivalent classes between the inhomogeneous diquark condensates and gluon condensates.
We solve the gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at leading order in the large $N$ expansion by computing the anomalous dimensions of all the fields of the model and other gauge independent critical exponents by examining the scaling behaviour of the Schwinger Dyson equation. We then restrict to the three dimensional model and include a Chern Simons term to discover the $θ$-dependence of the same exponents where $θ$ is the Chern Simons coupling.
In this article, the gap equation for the constituent quark mass in the U(2)*U(2) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model for the 1/Nc approximation is investigated. It is shown that taking into account scalar isovector mesons plays an important role for the correct description of quark masses in this approximation. The role of the Ward identity in calculations of 1/Nc corrections to the meson vertex functions is shortly discussed.
We investigate the effect of an external gravitational fields to the chiral symmetry breaking in the SUSY (supersymmetric) NJL (Nambu-Jona-Lasinio) model non-minimally interacting with external supergravity. Evaluating the effective potential in the leading order of the $1/N_{c}$-expansion and in the linear curvature approximation it is found the possibility of the chiral symmetry breaking in the SUSY NJL model in an external gravitational fields. In the broken phase the dynamically generated mass is analytically and numerically calculated.
Interquark confinement potential is calculated in the dual Monopole Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with dual Dirac strings as a functional of a dual Dirac string length. The calculation is carried out by the explicit integration over quantum fluctuations of a dual-vector field (monopole-antimonopole collective excitation) around the Abrikosov flux line and string shape fluctuations. The contribution of the scalar field (monopole-antimonopole collective excitation) exchange is taken into account in the tree approximation due to the London limit regime.
We propose a new iterative method to directly calculate the spontaneous mass generation due to the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. We can conclude the physical mass definitely without recourse to any other consideration like the free energy comparison.
Recently proposed by Battistel et al. "predictive formulation of the NJL model" is discussed and its connection with the differential regularization is noted. The principal problem of this formulation is a non-physical singularity (Landau pole) in meson propagators. A modification of the formulation, which is free of the Landau pole and conserves main features of the approach, is proposed.
We construct the Lagrangian of the ${\cal N}=1$ four-dimensional generalized supersymmetric Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio (SNJL) model, which has ${\cal N}=1/2$ supersymmetry (SUSY) on non(anti)commutative superspace. A special attention is paid to the examination on the nonperturbative quantum dynamics: The phenomenon of dynamical-symmetry-breaking/mass-generation on the deformed superspace is investigated. The model Lagrangian and the method of SUSY auxiliary fields of composites are examined in terms of component fields. We derive the effective action, examine it, and solve the gap equation for self…
The phase structure of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with N-component fermions in curved space-time is studied in the leading order of the 1/N expansion. The effective potential for composite operator $\barψψ$ is calculated by using the normal coordinate expansion in the Schwinger proper-time method. The existence of the first-order phase transition caused by the change of the space-time curvature is confirmed and the dynamical mass of the fermion is calculated as a simultaneous function of the curvature and the four-fermion coupling constant. The phase diagram in the curvature and the coupling con…
The magnetic monopole condensate is calculated in the dual Monopole Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with dual Dirac strings suggested in Refs.[1,2] as a functional of the dual Dirac string shape. The calculation is carried out in the tree approximation in the scalar monopole-antimonopole collective excitation field. The integration over quantum fluctuations of the dual-vector monopole-antimonopole collective excitation field around the Abrikosov flux line and string shape fluctuations are performed explicitly. We claim that there are important contributions of quantum and string shape fluctuations to…
Recently a mechanism to generate mass from gravitational interaction, based on Mach principle, according to which the inertia of a body is a property of matter as well as of the background provided by the rest-of-the-universe was presented in \cite{novello} \cite{novello2}. In these papers such an idea was realized for scalar and spinor fields treating the rest-of-the-universe in its vacuum state. In the present paper, using an extended version of Mach principle, the same strategy will be applied to show how the Heisenberg-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio non-linear equation for fermions $Ψ$ arises as a con…
