We discuss how much we can probe the effective number of neutrino species N_nu with cosmic microwave background alone. Using the data of WMAP, ACBAR, CBI and BOOMERANG experiments, we obtain a constraint on the effective number of neutrino species as 0.96< N_nu <7.94 at 95% C.L. for a power-law LCDM flat universe model. The limit is improved to be 1.39 < N_nu < 6.38 at 95% C.L. if we assume that the baryon density, N_nu and the helium abundance are related by the big bang nucleosynthesis theory. We also provide a forecast for the PLANCK experiment using a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach. In addition to constraining N_nu, we investigate how the big bang nucleosynthesis relation affects the estimation for these parameters and other cosmological parameters.
It has been recently argued that higher dimensional gravity theories may manifest themselves not only at short microscopic distances but also at large cosmological scales. We study the constraints that cosmic microwave background measurements set on such large distance modifications of the gravitational potential.
Using the values of the cosmological parameters obtained from Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and the cosmological chemical clock observed by high-redshift quasars, it is shown that star formation should have started by the redshift $z_F > 9.5$, and that $z_F$ is sensitive only to $\omegamz h^2$ in flat $Λ$CDM cosmology.
The pattern of anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background depends upon the masses and lifetimes of the three neutrino species. A neutrino species of mass greater than 10 eV with lifetime between 10^{13} sec and 10^{17} sec leaves a very distinct signature (due to the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect): the anisotropies at large angles are predicted to be comparable to those on degree scales. Present data exclude such a possibility and hence this region of parameter space. For $m_ν\simeq 30$ eV, $τ\simeq 10^{13}$ sec, we find an interesting possibility: the Integrated Sachs Wolfe peak produced…
I show that neutral lithium couples strongly to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) through its 6708A resonant transition after it recombines at z~500. At observed wavelengths of <335 micron, the CMB anisotropies are significantly altered since the optical depth for resonant scattering by neutral lithium is substantial, of order 0.5. The scattering would suppress the original anisotropies, but will generate strong new anisotropies in the CMB temperature and polarization on sub-degree scales (l>100). Observations at different wavelengths in this spectral regime can probe different thin slices…
Neutrinos that decay leave their imprint on the cosmic microwave background. We calculate the CMB anisotropy for the full range of decaying neutrino parameter space, and investigate the ability of future experiments like MAP and Planck to probe decaying neutrino physics. MAP and Planck should be able to distinguish from $Λ$CDM, eV-scale neutrinos that decay after recombination. Neutrinos that decay before recombination are distinguishable if the decays occur very much out of equilibrium; Planck should be sensitive to the border between equilibrium and out of equilibrium decays. Adding decaying…
Intracluster magnetic fields with $ \sim μG $ strength induce Faraday rotation on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization. Measurements of this effect can potentially probe the detailed structure of intracluster magnetic fields across clusters, since the CMB polarization is a continuously varying field on the sky, in contrast to the conventional method restricted by the limited number of radio sources behind or inside a cluster. We here construct a method for extracting information on magnetic fields from measurements of the effect, combined with possible observations of the Sunyaev…
We analyze WMAP 3 year data using the one-point distribution functions to probe the non-Gaussianity in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Anisotropy data. Computer simulations are performed to determine the uncertainties of the results. We report the non-Gaussianity parameter f_NL is constrained to 26<f_NL<82 for Q-band, 12<f_NL<67 for V-band, 7<f_NL<64 for W-band and 23<f_NL<75 for Q+V+W combined data at 95% confidence level (CL).
We investigate in detail the possibility of constraining neutrino decays with data from the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). Two generic decays are considered ν_H -> ν_L ϕand ν_H -> ν_L ν_L_bar ν_L. We have solved the momentum dependent Boltzmann equation in order to account for possible relativistic decays. Doing this we estimate that any neutrino with mass m > 1 eV decaying before the present should be detectable with future CMBR data. Combining this result with other results on stable neutrinos, any neutrino mass of the order 1 eV should be detectable.
We discuss the possibility to constrain the relation between redshift and temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using multifrequency Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) observations. We have simulated a catalog of clusters of galaxies detected through their SZ signature assuming the sensitivities that will be achieved by the {\it Planck} satellite at 100, 143 and 353 GHz, taking into account the instrumental noise and the contamination from the Cosmic Infrared Background and from unresolved radiosources. We have parametrized the cosmological temperature-redshift law as $T\propto (1+z)^{(1-a)…
We investigate the constraints that OH microwave transitions in megamasers and molecular absorbers at cosmological distances may place on the evolution of the fine structure constant alpha=e^2/(hbar c). The centimeter OH transitions are a combination of hyperfine splitting and lambda-doubling that can constrain the cosmic evolution of alpha from a single species, avoiding systematic errors in alpha measurements from multiple species which may have relative velocity offsets. The most promising method compares the 18 and 6 cm OH lines, includes a calibration of systematic errors, and offers mult…
It has been argued that the large-angle cosmic microwave background anisotropy has anomalies at 3-sigma level. We review various proposed ideas to explain the origin of the anomalies and discuss how we can constrain the proposed models using future observational data.
The recent discovery of a Gunn--Peterson (GP) trough in the spectrum of the redshift 6.28 SDSS quasar has raised the tantalizing possibility that we have detected the reionization of the universe. However, a neutral fraction (of hydrogen) as small as 0.1% is sufficient to cause the GP trough, hence its detection alone cannot rule out reionization at a much earlier epoch. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization anisotropy offers an alternative way to explore the dark age of the universe. We show that for most models constrained by the current CMB data and by the discovery of a GP tro…
Scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in galaxy clusters induces a polarization signal proportional to the CMB quadrupole anisotropy at the cluster's location and look-back time. A survey of such remote quadrupole measurements provides information about large-scale cosmological perturbations. This paper presents a formalism for calculating the correlation function of remote quadrupole measurements in spherical harmonic space. The number of independent modes probed by both single-redshift and volume-limited surveys is presented, along with the length scales probed by these m…
Using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method we perform a global analysis constraining the dynamics of dark energy in light of the supernova (Riess "Gold" samples), galaxy clustering (SDSS 3D power spectra and SDSS lyman-αforest information) and the latest three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations. We have allowed the dark energy equation of state to get across -1 and pay particular attention to the effects when incorrectly neglecting dark energy perturbations. We find the parameter space of dynamical dark energy is now well constrained and neglecting dark energy …
We present further observational evidence in support of our earlier proposal (Houde et al. 2000) for detecting the presence of the magnetic field in molecular clouds by comparing spectra of molecular ions with those of neutral molecules. The ion lines tend to be narrower and do not show the wings due to flows, when the magnetic field is sufficiently strong. We obtained spectra for the optically thin lines of the H13CN and H13CO+ species in a sample of ten molecular clouds and found the results to be in agreement with our previous observations of the main isotopic species, HCN and HCO+, made in…
We have studied the angular fluctuations in the speed of light with respect to the apex of the dipole of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation using the experimental data obtained with GRAAL facility, located at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble. The measurements were based on the stability of the Compton edge of laser photons scattered on the 6 GeV monochromatic electron beam. The results enable to obtain a conservative constraint on the anisotropy in the light speed variations Δc(θ)/c < 3 10^{-12}, i.e. with higher precision than from previous experiments.
Cyg X-1 was observed in the high state at the conjunction orbital phase (0) with HETG/Chandra. Strong and asymmetric absorption lines of highly ionized species were detected, such as Fe XXV, Fe XXIV, Fe XXIII, Si XIV, S XVI, Ne X, and etc. In the high state the profile of the absorption lines are composed of an extended red wing and a less extended blue wing. The red wings of higher ionized species are more extended than that of lower ionized species. The detection of these lines provides a way to probe the properties of the flow around the companion and the black hole in Cyg X-1 during the hi…
The cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) is providing important clues into the evolution of the early universe. In this Science Perspective, Joy and Carlstrom discuss one feature of the CMBR, the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, which can be used to determine the abundance and evolution of clusters of galaxies, thereby constraining key cosmological parameters such as the matter density of the universe and its expansion rate.
We use the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data on the spectrum of cosmic microwave background anisotropies to put constraints on the present amount of lepton asymmetry L, parameterized by the dimensionless chemical potential (also called degeneracy parameter) xi and on the effective number of relativistic particle species. We assume a flat cosmological model with three thermally distributed neutrino species having all the same mass and chemical potential, plus an additional amount of effectively massless exotic particle species. The extra energy density associated to these species…
A primary goal for cosmology and particle physics over the coming decade will be to unravel the nature of the dark energy that drives the accelerated expansion of the Universe. In particular, determination of the equation-of-state of dark energy, w equivalent p/rho, and its time variation, dw/dz, will be critical for developing theoretical understanding of the new physics behind this phenomenon. Type Ia supernovae (SNe) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy are each sensitive to the dark energy equation-of-state. SNe alone can determine w(z) with some precision, while CMB anisotropy…
After cosmological recombination, the primordial hydrogen gas decoupled from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and fell into the gravitational potential wells of the dark matter. The neutral hydrogen imprinted acoustic oscillations on the pattern of brightness fluctuations due to its redshifted 21cm absorption of the CMB. Unlike CMB temperature fluctuations which probe the power spectrum at cosmic recombination, we show that observations of the 21cm fluctuations at z ~ 20-200 can measure four separate fluctuation modes (with a fifth mode requiring very high precision), thus providing a uni…
Rapid progress has been made in observations of the temperature anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). These observations have enabled cosmologists to characterize the state of the universe at recombination, and observational efforts are now being directed towards obtaining the polarization map of the CMB. Here we draw an analogy between the CMB polarization map and nematic liquid crystals, pointing out that the two have similar defects. Making use of known results in the theory of defect formation we predict the statistical distribution of defects in the CMB polarization map a…
Phases of the spherical harmonic analysis of full-sky cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature data contain useful information complementary to the ubiquitous angular power spectrum. In this letter we present a new method of phase analysis on incomplete sky maps. It is based on Fourier phases of equal-latitude pixel rings of the map, which are related to the mean angle of the trigonometric moments from the full-sky phases. They have an advantage for probing regions of interest without tapping polluted Galactic plane area, and can localize non-Gaussian features and departure from statistic…
Galaxy clusters will distort the pattern of temperature anisotropies in the microwave background via gravitational lensing. We create lensed microwave background maps using clusters drawn from numerical cosmological simulations. A distinctive dipole-like temperature fluctuation pattern is formed aligned with the underlying microwave temperature gradient. For a massive cluster, the characteristic angular size of the temperature distortion is a few arcminutes and the characteristic amplitude a few micro-Kelvin. We demonstrate a simple technique for estimating the lensing deflection induced by th…
We use the newly released 182 Type Ia supernova data combined with the third-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropic Probe data (WMAP3) and large scale structure (LSS) information including SDSS and 2dFGRS to constrain the dark energy equation of state (EoS) as well as the curvature of universe $Ω_K$. Using the full dataset of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and LSS rather than the shift parameter and linear growth factor, we make a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) global fit, while paying particular attention to the dark energy perturbation. Parameterizing the EoS as $w_{DE}(a) = w_{0} + w_{1}(…
We assess the accuracy with which Omega and Lambda can be measured by combining various types of upcoming experiments. Useful expressions for the Fisher information matrix are derived for classical cosmological tests involving luminosity (eg, SN Ia), angular size, age and number counts. These geometric probes are found to be quite complementary both to each other and to inferences from cluster abundance and the cosmic microwave background (CMB). For instance, a joint analysis of SN Ia and CMB reduces the error bars by about an order of magnitude compared to a separate analysis of either data s…
We use a high-accuracy computational code to investigate the precision with which cosmological parameters could be reconstructed by future cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments, in particular the two satellite missions MAP and Planck Surveyor (COBRAS/SAMBA). We identify several parameter combinations that could be determined with a few percent accuracy with MAP and the Planck Surveyor, as well as some degeneracies among the parameters that cannot be accurately resolved with the temperature data alone. These degeneracies can be broken by other astronomical measurements. Polarization mea…
We question the global universe isotropy by probing the alignment of local structures in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. The original method proposed relies on a steerable wavelet decomposition of the CMB signal on the sphere. The analysis of the first-year WMAP data identifies a mean preferred plane with a normal direction close to the CMB dipole axis, and a mean preferred direction in this plane, very close to the ecliptic poles axis. Previous statistical anisotropy results are thereby synthesized, but further analyses are still required to establish their origin.
We derive constraint on the effective number of neutrino species N_nu from the cosmic microwave background power spectrum of the WMAP and galaxy clustering power spectrum of the SDSS luminous red galaxies (LRGs). Using these two latest data sets of CMB and galaxy clustering alone, we obtain the limit 0.9 < N_nu < 8.2 (95% C.L.) for the power-law LambdaCDM flat universe, with no external prior. The lower limit corresponds to the lower bound on the reheating temperature of the universe T_R > 2 MeV.
We investigate the accuracy attainable by forthcoming space-based observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropy in constraining the dark energy density parameter $\Oq$ and equation of state $\wq=p_{\rm Q}/ρ_{\rm Q}$. Despite degeneracies among parameters, it is possible for high precision observations such as those from WMAP and Planck to provide interesting information on the nature of the dark energy. Furthermore, we show that imposing a flat universe constraint makes it possible to obtain tight limits in the space of dark energy parameters eve…
With the latest astronomical data including Cosmic Microwave Background (WMAP three year, CBI, ACBAR, VSA), Type Ia Supernova ("gold sample"), Galaxy Clustering (SDSS 3-D matter power, Lyman-$α$ forest and Baryon Acoustic Oscillating (BAO)), we make a global fitting to constrain the mass varying neutrinos. We find that the parameter $δ$, denoting time evolving of neutrino mass, is weakly constrained and the neutrino mass limit today can be relaxed at least by a factor of two. Adding data of $0\nu2β$ decay of Heidelberg-Moscow experiment to our analysis, we find that $δ$ can be constrained tigh…
We perform a thorough analysis of oscillation signals generated by one extra sterile neutrino, extending previous analyses done in simple limiting cases and including the effects of established oscillations among active neutrinos. We consider the following probes: solar, atmospheric, reactor and beam neutrinos, Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (helium-4, deuterium), Cosmic Microwave Background, Large Scale Structure, supernovae, neutrinos from other astrophysical sources. We find no evidence for a sterile neutrino in present data, identify the still allowed regions, and study which future experiments …
