We present a theoretical study of spin-3/2 hole transport through mesoscopic rings, based on the spherical Luttinger model. The quasi-one-dimensional ring is created in a symmetric two-dimensional quantum well by a singular-oscillator potential for the radial in-plane coordinate. The quantum-interference contribution to the two-terminal ring conductance exhibits an energy-dependent Aharonov-Anandan phase, even though Rashba and Dresselhaus spin splittings are absent. Instead, confinement-induced heavy-hole - light-hole mixing is found to be the origin of this phase, which has ramifications for magneto-transport measurements in gated hole rings.
We study the spin-dependent geometric phase effect in mesoscopic rings of charge-density-wave(CDW) materials. When electron spin is explicitly taken into account, we show that the spin-dependent Aharonov-Casher phase can have a pronounced frustration effects on such CDW materials with appropriate electron filling. We show that this frustration has observable consequences for transport experiment. We identify a phase transition from a Peierls insulator to metal, which is induced by spin-dependent phase interference effects. Mesoscopic CDW materials and spin-dependent geometric phase effects, an…
An electron interferometer was designed and fabricated via a normal metal/insulator/ferromagnet non-local lateral spin valve with a ring-shaped normal metal/insulator spacer, and spin current interference was observed. A very high spin signal of 200 m$Ω$ was found in a device with 2 $μ$m injector-detector distance and magnetic field swept parallel to the plane. With a perpendicular magnetic field sweep, a Hanle effect measurement showed both spin precession and $h/e$ oscillation. Because of the non-adiabatic nature of the precessing spins at low fields as they traverse the normal metal ring, t…
We have calculated the persistent spin current of an open ring induced by the Aharonov-Casher phase. For unpolarized electrons there exist no persistent charge currents, but persistent spin currents. We show that, in general, the magnitude of the persistent spin current in a ring depends on the direction of the direct current flow from one reservoir to another. The persistent spin current is modulated by the cosine function of the spin precession angle. The nonadiabatic Aharonov-Casher phase gives anomalous behaviors. The Aharonov-Anandan phase is determined by the solid angle of spin precessi…
We have investigated the Aharonov-Bohm effect in mesoscopic semiconductor GaAs/GaAlAs rings in low magnetic fields. The oscillatory magnetoconductance of these systems is systematically studied as a function of electron density. We observe phase-shifts of $π$ in the magnetoconductance oscillations, and halving of the fundamental $h/e$ period, as the density is varied. Theoretically we find agreement with the experiment, by introducing an asymmetry between the two arms of the ring.
We show theoretically that strong electron coupling to circularly polarized photons in non-singly-connected nanostructures results in the appearance of an artificial gauge field that changes the electron phase. The effect arises from the breaking of time-reversal symmetry and is analogous to the well-known Aharonov-Bohm phase effect. It can manifest itself in the oscillations of conductance as a function of the intensity and frequency of the illumination. The theory of the effect is elaborated for mesoscopic rings in both ballistic and diffusive regimes.
The time reversal Aharonov-Casher (AC) interference effect in the mesoscopic ring structures, based on the experiment in Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{97}, 196803 (2006), is studied theoretically. The transmission curves are calculated from the scattering matrix formalism, and the time reversal AC interference frequency is singled out from the Fourier spectra in numerical simulations. This frequency is in good agreement with analytical result. It is also shown that in the absent of magnetic field, the Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak type (time reversal) AC interference retains under the influence of strong…
A new class of topological mesoscopic phenomena in absence of external magnetic field (meso-nucleo-spinics)is predicted, which is based on combined action of the nonequilibrium nuclear spin population and charge carriers spin-orbit interaction . As an example, we show that Aharonov-Bohm like oscillations of the persistent current in GaAs/AlGaAs based mesoscopic rings may exist, in the absence of the external magnetic field, provided that a topologically nontrivial strongly nonequilibrium nuclear spin population is created. This phenomenon is due to the breaking, via the spin-orbit coupling, of…
We report measurements of the amplitude of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a mesoscopic diffusive gold ring as a function of the DC bias voltage V. The amplitude of the h/e oscillations increases with V once the Thouless energy Ec and thermal energy are exceeded, and decreases at higher values of V. The increase of the amplitude is interpreted in terms of a superposition of the statistically independent contributions of eV/Ec energy intervals, whereas its decrease at high V could be attributed to enhanced inelastic scattering processes.
Mesoscopic solid state Aharonov-Bohm interferometers have been used to measure the "intrinsic" phase, $α_{QD}$, of the resonant quantum transmission amplitude through a quantum dot (QD). For a two-terminal "closed" interferometer, which conserves the electron current, Onsager's relations require that the measured phase shift $β$ only "jumps" between 0 and $π$. Additional terminals open the interferometer but then $β$ depends on the details of the opening. Using a theoretical model, we present quantitative criteria (which can be tested experimentally) for $β$ to be equal to the desired $α_{QD}$…
We present a detailed analysis of the Aharonov-Bohm interference oscillations manifested through transmission of an electron in a mesoscopic ring with a magnetic impurity atom inserted in one of its arms. The electron interacts with the impurity through the exchange interaction leading to exchange spin-flip scattering. Transmission in the spin-flipped and spin-unflipped channels are explicitly calculated. We show that the spin-flipper acts as a dephasor in spite of absence of any inelastic scattering. The spin-conductance (related to spin-polarized transmission coefficient) is asymmetric in th…
The magnetization of a system of many mesoscopic rings under non-equilibrium conditions is considered. The corresponding disorder-averaged current in a ring is shown to be a sum of the `thermodynamic' and `kinetic' contributions both resulting from the electron-electron interaction. The thermodynamic part can be expressed through the diagonal matrix elements of the current operator in the basis of exact many-body eigenstates and is a generalization of the equilibrium persistent current. The novel kinetic part is present only out of equilibrium and is governed by the off-diagonal matrix element…
The Fano effect, which occurs through the quantum-mechanical cooperation between resonance and interference, can be observed in electron transport through a hybrid system of a quantum dot and an Aharonov-Bohm ring. While a clear correlation appears between the height of the Coulomb peak and the real asymmetric parameter $q$ for the corresponding Fano lineshape, we need to introduce a complex $q$ to describe the variation of the lineshape by the magnetic and electrostatic fields. The present analysis demonstrates that the Fano effect with complex asymmetric parameters provides a good probe to d…
We study electron decoherence by measuring the temperature dependence of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations in quasi-1D rings, etched in a high-mobility GaAs/GaAlAs heterostructure. The oscillation amplitude is influenced both by phase-breaking and by thermal averaging. Thermal averaging is important when the temperature approaches the energy scale, on which the AB oscillations shift their phase. For the phase-breaking, it is demonstrated that the damping of the oscillation amplitude is proportional to the length of the interfering paths. For temperatures $T$ from 0.3 to 4 $\rm K$ we find the pha…
We study the amplitude of mesoscopic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) diffusive rings. We consider first the low-temperature limit of a fully coherent sample. The variance of oscillation harmonics is calculated as a function of the length of the leads attaching the ring to reservoirs. We further analyze the regime of relatively high temperatures, when the dephasing due to electron-electron interaction suppresses substantially the oscillations. We show that the dephasing length L_phi^AB governing the damping factor exp(-2pi R /L_phi^AB) of the oscillations is parametric…
Mesoscopic systems have provided an opportunity to study quantum effects beyond the atomic realm. In these systems quantum coherence prevails over the entire sample. We discuss several novel effects related to persistent currents in open systems which do not have analogues in closed systems. Some phenomena arising simultaneously due to two non-classical effects namely, Aharonov-Bohm effect and quantum tunneling are presented. Simple analysis of sharp phase jumps observed in double-slit Aharonov-Bohm experiments is given. Some consequences of parity violation are elaborated. Finally, we briefly…
We present a detailed analysis of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference oscillations manifested through transmission of an electron in a mesoscopic ring with a magnetic impurity atom inserted in one of its arms. The spin polarization transport is also studied. The electron interacts with the impurity through the exchange interaction leading to exchange spin-flip scattering. Transmission in the spin-flipped and spin-unflipped channels are explicitly calculated. We show that the entanglement between electron and spin-flipper states lead to a reduction of AB oscillations in spite of absence of any …
The matrix-valued Aharonov-Casher phase factor $F_{\text{AC}}$ (related to the c-number Aharonov-Casher phase $λ_{\text{AC}}$) plays an important role in the physics of mesoscopic systems in which spin-orbit coupling is relevant. Yet, its relation to experimental observables is rather elusive. Based on the SU(2)-gauge-invariant formulation of the Schroedinger equation, we relate $F_{\text{AC}}$ to measurable quantities in electronic interferometers subject to electric fields that generate Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. Specifically, we consider electron transmission through (i) a s…
Taking into account the spin precession caused by the spin-orbit splitting of the conduction band in semiconductor quantum wells, we have calculated the Fourier spectra of conductance and state-density correlators in a 2D ring, in order to investigate the structure of the main peak corresponding to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. In narrow rings the peak structure is determined by the competition between the spin-orbit and the Zeeman couplings. The latter leads to a peak broadening, and produces the peak splitting in the state-density Fourier spectrum. We have found an oscillation of the peak inte…
We report measurements of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in normal metal rings in the presence of high frequency electromagnetic fields. The power dependence of the decoherence time scale tau_phi(P) agrees well with the anticipated power law tau_phi proportional to P^(-1/5) when the field-induced decoherence rate tau_ac^(-1) is large compared to the intrinsic decoherence rate tau_o^(-1), measured in the absence of external fields. As theoretically expected, we observe a decline in field-induced decoherence when tau_ac^(-1)<=tau_o^(-1). The frequency dependence of tau_phi shows a minimum in the osc…
The Aharonov-Casher (AC) oscillations of spin current through a 2D ballistic ring in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction and external magnetic field has been calculated using the semiclassical path integral method. For classically chaotic trajectories the Fokker-Planck equation determining dynamics of the particle spin polarization has been derived. On the basis of this equation an analytic expression for the spin conductance has been obtained taking into account a finite width of the ring arms carrying large number of conducting channels. It was shown that the finite width results i…
We study the effect of an electric charge in the middle of a ring of electrons in a magnetic field such as $ν= 1/2$. In the absence of the central charge, a residual current should appear due to an Aharanov-Bohm effect. As the charge varies, periodic currents should appear in the ring. We evaluate the amplitude of these currents, as well as their period as the central charge varies. The presence of these currents should be a direct signature of the existence of a statistical gauge field in the $ν=1/2$ quantum Hall effect. Numerical diagonalizations for a small number of electrons on the sphere…
Two important features of mesoscopic Aharonov-Bohm (A-B) electronic interferometers are analyzed: decoherence due to coupling with other degrees of freedom and the coupled transport of charge and heat. We first review the principles of decoherence of electronic interference. We then analyze the thermoelectric transport in a ring threaded by such a flux, with a molecular bridge on one of its arms. The charge carriers may also interact inelastically with the molecular vibrations. This nano-system is connected to three termi- nals; two of them are electric and thermal, held at slightly different …
The reduction of the amplitude of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a ballistic one-channel mesoscopic interferometer due to charge fluctuations is investigated. In the arrangement considered the interferometer has four terminals and is coupled to macroscopic metallic side-gates. The Aharonov-Bohm oscillation amplitude is calculated as a function of temperature and the strength of coupling between the ring and the side-gates. The resulting dephasing rate is linear in temperature in agreement with recent experiments. Our derivation emphasizes the relationship between dephasing, ac-transport and cha…
A careful study on the mesoscopic PC in a Luttinger liquid ring is carried out. It is shown that discreteness plays an important role in calculating the PC caused by the magnetic flux. At zero temperature, the current is shown to be independent of the interaction even when $g=g_2-g_4$ is not zero. The current becomes enhanced at finite temperatures comparing to the non-interacting case, when the parameter g is positive.
The conventional unpolarized current injected into a {\em quantum-coherent} semiconductor ring attached to two external leads can be modulated from perfect conductor to perfect insulator limit via Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling. This requires that ballistic propagation of electrons, whose spin precession is induced by the Aharonov-Casher phase, takes place through a single conducting channel ensuring that electronic quantum state remains a pure separable one in the course of transport. We study the fate of such spin interference effects as more than one orbital conducting channel becomes avai…
We study the persistent currents induced by both the Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher effects in a one-dimensional mesoscopic ring coupled to a side-branch quantum dot at Kondo resonance. For privileged values of the Aharonov-Bohm-Casher fluxes, the problem can be mapped onto an integrable model, exactly solvable by a Bethe ansatz. In the case of a pure magnetic Aharonov-Bohm flux, we find that the presence of the quantum dot has no effect on the persistent current. In contrast, the Kondo resonance interferes with the spin-dependent Aharonov-Casher effect to induce a current which, in the str…
An interacting quantum dot inserted in a mesoscopic ring is investigated. A variational ansatz is employed to describe the ground state of the system in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm flux. It is shown that, for even number of electrons with the energy level spacing smaller than the Kondo temperature, the persistent current has a value similar to that of a perfect ring with the same radius. On the other hand, for a ring with odd number electrons, the persistent current is found to be strongly suppressed compared to that of an ideal ring, which implies the suppression of the Kondo-resonant t…
Motivated by a recent experiment by Buks et al. [Nature 391, 871 (1998)] we consider electron transport through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with a quantum dot in one of its arms. The quantum dot is coupled to a quantum system with a finite number of states acting as a which-path detector. The Aharonov-Bohm interference is calculated using a two-particle scattering approach for the joint transitions in detector and quantum dot. Tracing over the detector yields dephasing and a reduction of the interference amplitude. We show that the interference can be restored by a suitable measurement on …
We investigate parametric pumping of spin and charge currents in a mesoscopic ring interrupted by a tunnel barrier in presence of Aharonov-Casher (AC) effect and Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux along the axis of the same ring. Generation of a dc current is achieved by tuning the tunnel barrier strength and modulating in time either a radial(transverse) electric field or the magnetic flux. A pure spin current is generated by the interplay of breaking spin reversal symmetry, due to AC effect, and time-reversal symmetry breaking, intrinsic in parametric pumping procedure. We analyze the conditions for op…
Electron transport through mesoscopic, one-dimensional rings with asymmetric injection into the arms of the ring is studied, in the presence of a Aharonov-Bohm flux, by means of an appropriate $\boldsymbol{S}$ matrix. This matrix is expressed in terms of two parameters one of which ($λ$) accounts phenomenologically for this asymmetric injection into the arms of the ring. In addition, the effect of a scatterer placed in one arm of the ring is considered. Explicit expressions are obtained for the transmission as a function of the incident electron energy, the magnetic field, the asymmetry parame…
The nonlinear electronic transport properties of a ballistic Aharonov-Bohm ring are investigated. It is demonstrated how the electronic interaction breaks the phase rigidity in a two-probe mesoscopic device as the voltage bias is increased. The possibility of studying interference effects in the nonlinear regime is addressed. The occurrence of magnetic feld symmetries in higher order conductance coefficients is analyzed. The results are compared with recent experimental data.
Quantum interference in Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring structure provides additional control of spin at mesoscopic scale. We propose a scheme for spin filter by studying the coherent transport through the AB structure with lateral magnetic modulation on both arms of the ring structure. Large spin polarized current can be obtained with many energy channels.
We study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot embedded in a mesoscopic ring taking into account intradot spin-flip scattering $R$. Based on the finite-$U$ slave-boson mean-field approach, we find that the Kondo peak in the density of states is split into two peaks by this coherent spin-flip transition, which is responsible for some interesting features of the Kondo-assisted persistent current circulating the ring: (1) strong suppression and crossover to a sine function form with increasing $R$; (2) appearance of a "hump" in the $R$-dependent behavior for odd parity. $R$-induced reverse of the per…
Edge states of the quantum Hall fluid provide an opportunity to study mesoscopic effects in a highly correlated electron system that is both experimentally accessible and theoretically tractable. In this paper we review recent work on the persistent current and Aharonov-Bohm magnetoconductance oscillations in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime.
We derive non equilibrium statistical ensembles for a ballistic Aharonov-Bohm loop connected to several electrodes connected to reservoirs with different chemical potentials. A striking consequence of these non trivial ensembles is the emergence of quantum zero point fluctuations of the persistent current around the loop. Detailed predictions for the low frequency noise power are given.
We propose an idea to investigate persistent current in individual arms of a multi-arm mesoscopic ring. Following a brief description of persistent current in a traditional Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring, we examine the behavior of persistent currents in separate arms of a three-arm mesoscopic ring. Our analysis may be helpful in studying magnetic response of any complicated quantum network.
We consider a flux-threaded Aharonov-Bohm ring with an embedded quantum dot coupled to two normal leads. The local Rashba spin-orbit interaction acting on the dot electrons leads to a spin-dependent phase factor in addition to the Aharonov-Bohm phase caused by the external flux. Using the numerical renormalization group method, we find a splitting of the Kondo resonance at the Fermi level which can be compensated by an external magnetic field. To fully understand the nature of this compensation effect, we perform a scaling analysis and derive an expression for the effective magnetic field. The…
A mesoscopic ring subject to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and sequentially coupled to an interacting quantum dot, in the presence of Aharonov-Bohm flux, is proposed as a flux tunable tunneling diode. The analysis of the conductance by means of the nonequilibrium Green's function technique, shows an intrinsic bistability at varying the Aharonov-Bohm flux when 2U > πΓ, U being the charging energy on the dot and Γthe effective resonance width. The bistability properties are discussed in connection with spin-switch effects and logical storage device applications.
We study the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in two-dimensional mesoscopic frame in hole systems. We show that differing from the AB effect in electron systems, due to the presence of both the heavy hole and the light hole, the conductances not only show the normal spin-unresolved AB oscillations, but also become spin-separated. Some schemes for spin filter based on the abundant interference characteristics are proposed.
We study the effect of the electron-electron interaction on the amplitude of mesoscopic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) diffusive rings. We show that the dephasing length L_phi^AB governing the damping factor exp(-2piR / L_phi^AB) of the oscillations is parametrically different from the common dephasing length for the Q1D geometry. This is due to the fact that the dephasing is governed by energy transfers determined by the ring circumference 2piR, making L_phi^AB R-dependent.
We have measured transport through mesoscopic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) rings with two different four-terminal configurations. While the amplitude and the phase of the AB oscillations are well explained within the framework of the Landaur-Büttiker formalism, it is found that the probe configuration strongly affects the coherence time of the electrons, i.e., the decoherence is much reduced in the configuration of so-called nonlocal resistance. This result should provide an important clue in clarifying the mechanism of quantum decoherence in solids.
We study the coherent transport in multi-terminal mesoscopic Aharonov-Bohm ring with a quantum dot embedded in an arm. Employing the Friedel sum rule for the effective single-particle levels in the quantum dot, we explain some anomalous features which have been observed in the experiment. We attribute these anomalies to the result of nontrivial quantum interference of the quantum dot with the attached ring. Further, we propose a new feature of conductance oscillations which can be a test for the validity of our model.
We analyze the posibility of employing the mesoscopic-nanoscopic ring of a normal metal in a doubly degenerate persistent current state with a third auxihilary level and in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm flux equal to the half of the normal flux quantum $\hbar c/e$ as a qubit. The auxiliary level can be effectively used for all fundamental quantum logic gate (qu-gate) operations which includes the initialization, phase rotation, bit flip and the Hadamard transformation as well as the double-qubit controlled operations (conditional bit flip). We suggest a tentative realization of the mechani…
We calculate the average polarisability of two dimensional mesoscopic rings in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm flux. The screening is taken into account self-consistently within a mean-field approximation. We investigate the effects of statistical ensemble, finite frequency and disorder. We emphasize geometrical effects which make the observation of field dependent polarisability much more favourable on rings than on disks or spheres of comparable radius. The ratio of the flux dependent to the flux independent part is estimated for typical GaAs rings.
We study the quantum interference effects induced by the Aharonov-Casher phase in asymmetrically confined two-dimensional electron and heavy-hole ring structures systems taking into account the electrically tunable spin-orbit (SO) interaction. We have calculated the non-adiabatic transport properties of charges (heavy-holes and electrons) in two-probe thin ring structures and compare how the form of the SO coupling of the carries affects it. We show that both the SO splitting of the bands and the carrier density can be used to modulate the conductance through the ring. We show that the depende…
The persistent currents driven by the pure Aharonov-Bohm type magnetic field in mesoscopic normal metal or semiconducting cylinders are studied. A two-dimensional (2D) Fermi surfaces are characterized by four parameters. Several conditions for the coherence and enhancement of currents are discussed. These results are then generalized to a three-dimensional (3D) thin-walled cylinder to show that under certain geometric conditions on the Fermi surface, a novel effect - the appearance of spontaneous currents is predicted.
Response of the electronic current through an Aharonov-Bohm ring after a two-level-system is switched on is calculated perturbatively by use of non-equilibrium Green function. In the ballistic case the amplitude of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation is shown to decay to a new equilibrium value due to scattering into other electronic states. Relaxation of Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillation in diffusive case due to dephasing effect is also calculated. The time scale of the relaxation is determined by characteristic relaxation times of the system and the splitting of two-level-system. Oscillation pha…
We report a study of the Aharonov-Bohm effect, the oscillations of the resistance of a mesoscopic ring as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field, in a GaAs two-dimensional hole system with a strong spin-orbit interaction. The Fourier spectra of the oscillations reveal extra structure near the main peak whose frequency corresponds to the magnetic flux enclosed by the ring. A comparison of the experimental data with results of simulations demonstrates that the origin of the extra structure is the geometric (Berry) phase acquired by the carrier spin as it travels around the ring.
We study the spin-dependent magneto conductance in mesoscopic rings subject to an inhomogeneous in-plane magnetic field. We show that the polarization direction of transmitted spin-polarized electrons can be controlled via an additional magnetic flux such that spin flips are induced at half a flux quantum. This quantum interference effect is independent of the strength of the nonuniform field applied. We give an analytical explanation for one-dimensional rings and numerical results for corresponding ballistic microstructures.
We propose a novel spin-optronic device based on the interference of polaritonic waves traveling in opposite directions and gaining topological Berry phase. It is governed by the ratio of the TE-TM and Zeeman splittings, which can be used to control the output intensity. Because of the peculiar orientation of the TE-TM effective magnetic field for polaritons, there is no analogue of the Aharonov- Casher phase shift existing for electrons.
We investigate the properties of the electron spin-transmission through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with an embedded multilevel quantum dot containing magnetic impurities. A suitable formalism is developed. The amplitude and the phase of the flip- and nonflip-transmittance are calculated numerically as function of the magnetic field and the gate potential applied on the dot. The effects induced by the exchange interaction to spin-dependent magnetoconductance fluctuations and transmittance phase are shown.
This is a review of electronic quantum interference in mesoscopic ring structures based on graphene, with a focus on the interplay between the Aharonov-Bohm effect and the peculiar electronic and transport properties of this material. We first present an overview on recent developments of this topic, both from the experimental as well as the theoretical side. We then review our recent work on signatures of two prominent graphene-specific features in the Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations, namely Klein tunneling and specular Andreev reflection. We close with an assessment of experimental an…
In order to understand how screening is modified by electronic interferences in a mesoscopic isolated system, we have computed both analytically and numerically the average thermodynamic and time dependent polarisabilities of two dimensional mesoscopic samples in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm flux. Two geometries have been considered: rings and squares. Mesoscopic correction to screening are taken into account in a self consistent way, using the response function formalism. The role of the statistical ensemble (canonical and grand canonical), disorder and frequency have been investigated. W…
We propose a mesoscopic circuit in the quantum Hall effect regime comprising two uncorrelated single-particle sources and two distant Mach-Zehnder interferometers with magnetic fluxes, which allows in a controllable way to produce orbitally entangled electrons. Two-particle correlations appear as a consequence of erasing of which path information due to collisions taking place at distant interferometers and in general at different times. The two-particle correlations manifest themselves as an Aharonov-Bohm effect in noise while the current is insensitive to magnetic fluxes. In an appropriate t…
The present work proposes an idea to remove the long standing controversy between the calculated and measured current amplitudes carried by a small conducting ring upon the application of an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux $ϕ$. Within a mean field Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation we numerically calculate persistent current, Drude weight, low-field magnetic susceptibility and related issues. Our analysis may be inspiring for studying magnetic response in nano-scale loop geometries.
In a recent letter, Yi et al. PRL 78, 3523 (1997), have considered the stability of a Charge Density Wave in a one-dimensional ring, in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm flux. This comment shows that, in one dimension, the stability of the Charge Density Wave depends on the parity of the number of electrons in the ring. This effect is similar to the parity effect known for the persistent current in one-dimensional rings.
We develop a Luttinger liquid theory of the Coulomb drag of persistent currents flowing in concentric mesoscopic rings, by incorporating non-linear corrections to the electron dispersion relation. We demonstrate that at low temperatures, interactions between electrons in different rings generate an additional phase and thus alter the period of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. The resulting nondissipative drag depends strongly on the relative parity of the electron numbers. We also show that interactions set a new temperature scale below which the linear response theory does not apply at certain val…
We demonstrate the time reversal Aharonov-Casher (AC) effect in small arrays of mesoscopic semiconductor rings. By using an electrostatic gate we can control the spin precession rate and follow the AC phase over several interference periods. We show that we control the precession rate in two different gate voltage ranges; in the lower range the gate voltage dependence is strong and linear and in the higher range the dependence in almost an order of magnitude weaker. We also see the second harmonic of the AC interference, oscillating with half the period. We finally map the AC phase to the spin…
