X-shooter is the first second-generation instrument for the ESO Very Large Telescope and will be installed in 2008. The adaptive optics MACAO has been implemented in 6 focii of the VLT observatory, in three different flavors. We present in this paper the results obtained during the commissioning of the last of these units, MACAO-CRIRES. CRIRES is a high-resolution spectrograph, which efficiency will be improved by a factor two at least for point-sources observations with a NGS brighter than R=15. During the commissioning, Strehl exceeding 60% have been observed with fair seeing conditions, and a general description of the performance of this curvature adaptive optics system is done.

We describe MIFS, a second generation integral-field spectrograph for the VLT, operating in the visible wavelength range. It combines a 1'x1' field of view with the improved spatial resolution provided by multi-conjugate adaptive optics and covers a large simultaneous spectral range (0.6-1.0 microns). We present a special science case for an intermediate resolution multi-object IR spectrograph for the VLT. We have constructed new models for massive Population III stars and metal-free stellar populations (see Schaerer 2001). The properties of individual stars and integrated populations, including their ionising fluxes and SEDs are discussed. We also study their dependence on the poorly known IMF and the star formation history. We propose a new methodology for probing the cosmological variability of alpha from pairs of FeII lines (SIDAM, single ion differential alpha measurement) observed in individual exposures from a high resolution spectrograph. As we move towards the era of ELTs, it is timely to think about the future role of the 8-m class telescopes. Under the OPTICON programme, novel technologies have been developed that are intended for use in multi-object and integral-field spectrographs. We report on low-resolution spectroscopy of GX339-4 during its current, extended X-ray `off' state in May 2000 (r=20.1) obtained with the VLT Focal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS1). Although we do not positively detect the secondary star in GX339-4 we place an upper limit of 30 percent on the contribution of a ``normal'' K-type secondary star spectrum to the observed flux. Using this limit for the observed magnitude of the secondary star, we find a lower limit for the distance of GX339-4 to be 5.6 kpc.
We introduce a new survey of massive stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds using the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) instrument at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). MAXIMUS (MAXimum MUltiplex Spectrograph) will fully exploit the multiplexing capabilities of the OzPoz fibre positioner in order to extend and complement FLAMES and VIMOS in covering observational parameter space, and to meet the increasing demand for multi-object spectroscopy by ESO users in the next decade.
There are four less prominent compact sources east of IRS5, the natures of which were unclear until now. We present near-infrared K-band long slit spectroscopy of the four sources east of IRS5 obtained with the ISAAC spectrograph at the ESO VLT in July 2005. We analyzed the CI lines associated with the damped Ly-alpha system observed at zabs = 1.15 in the spectrum of HE 0515-4414 to derive the 12C/13C ratio. The spectrum was obtained by means of the UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The obtained lower limit 12C/13C > 80 (2sigma C.L.) shows for the first time that the abundance of 13C in the extragalactic intervening clouds is very low. We report on high-resolution observations ($\Re \simeq 45000$) of the Hubble Deep Field South QSO J2233-606 obtained with the VLT UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES). We present spectral data for the wavelength region $3050 < λ< 10000$ Å. The $S/N$ ratio of the final spectrum is about 50 per resolution element at 4000 Å, 90 at 5000 Å, 80 at 6000 Å, 40 at 8000 Å. We report on a new spectroscopic analysis of the very metal deficient star G 64-12 ([Fe/H]=-3.3), aimed at determining, for the first time, its Be content. The spectra were observed during the Science Verification of UVES, the ESO VLT Ultraviolet and Visible Echelle Spectrograph. We report on low-resolution multi-object spectroscopy of 30 faint targets (R \~ 24-25) in the HDF-S and AXAF deep field obtained with the VLT Focal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS1). Eight high-redshift galaxies with 2.75< z < 4 have been identified. The spectroscopic redshifts are in good agreement with the photometric ones with a dispersion $σ_z = 0.07$ at z<2 and $σ_z = 0.16$ at z>2.
