We present a study of the old globular clusters (GC) using archival F606W and F814W HST/ACS images of 19 Magellanic-type dwarf Irregular (dIrr) galaxies found in nearby (2 - 8 Mpc) associations of only dwarf galaxies. All dIrrs have absolute magnitudes fainter than or equal to the SMC (Mv = -16.2 mag). We detect 50 GC candidates in 13 dIrrs, of which 37 have (V-I) colors consistent with "blue" (old, metal-poor) GCs (bGC). The luminosity function (LF) of the bGCs in our sample peaks at Mv = -7.41 +/- 0.22 mag, consistent with other galaxy types. The width of the LF is sigma = 1.79 +/- 0.31 which is typical for dIrrs, but broader than the typical width in massive galaxies. The half-light radii and ellipticities of the GCs in our sample (rh ~ 3.3 pc, e ~ 0.1) are similar to those of old GCs in the Magellanic Clouds and to those of "Old Halo" (OH) GCs in our Galaxy, but not as extended and spherical as the Galactic "Young Halo" (YH) GCs (rh ~ 7.7 pc, e ~ 0.06). The e distribution shows a turnover rather than a power law as observed for the Galactic GCs. This might suggest that GCs in dIrrs are kinematically young and not fully relaxed yet. The present-day specific frequencies (SN) span a broad range: 0.3 < SN < 11. Assuming a dissipationless age fading of the galaxy light, the SN values would increase by a factor of ~ 2.5 to 16, comparable with values for early-type dwarfs (dE/dSphs). A bright central GC candidate, similar to nuclear clusters of dEs, is observed in one of our dIrrs: NGC 1959. This nuclear GC has luminosity, color, and structural parameters similar to that of wCen and M54, suggesting that the latter might have their origin in the central regions of similar Galactic building blocks. A comparison between properties of bGCs and Galactic YH GCs, suspected to have originated from similar dIrrs, is performed.
Observations of rich LMC and SMC clusters reveal an increasing spread in core radius with age. This trend likely represents real physical evolution in these systems. Old Magellanic Cloud clusters appear either extended or compact. Similar core radius distributions are observed for the Fornax and Sagittarius dSph cluster systems and in the ``young'' halo Milky Way subsystem. These observations have implications for both the formation of the Galaxy and the dynamical evolution of globular clusters.
We present our analysis of Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 observations in F555W (broadband V) and F450W (broadband B) of the globular cluster Hodge 11 in the Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy. The resulting V vs. (B-V) color-magnitude diagram reaches 2.4 mag below the main-sequence turnoff (which is at V_TO = 22.65 +- 0.10 mag or M_V^TO = 4.00 +- 0.16 mag). Comparing the fiducial sequence of Hodge 11 with that of the Galactic globular cluster M92, we conclude that, within the accuracy of our photometry, the age of Hodge 11 is identical to that of M92 with a relative age-diffe…
We present accurate integrated-light photometry in Johnson/Cousins V, R, and I for a sample of 28 globular clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. The majority of the clusters in our sample have reliable age and metallicity estimates available in the literature. The sample encompasses ages between 50 Myr and 7 Gyr, and metallicities ([Fe/H]) between -1.5 and 0.0 dex. The sample is dominated by clusters of ages between roughly 0.5 and 2 Gyr, an age range during which the bolometric luminosity of simple stellar populations is dominated by evolved red giant branch stars and thermally pulsing asymptoti…
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has a unique cluster formation history in that nearly all of its globular clusters were formed either $\sim$ 13 Gyr ago or less than $\sim$ 3 Gyr ago. It is not clear what physical mechanism is responsible for the most recent cluster formation episode and thus the mysterious age gap between the LMC clusters. We first present results of gas dynamical N-body simulations of the evolution of the LMC in the context of its Galactic orbit and interactions with the SMC, paying special attention to the effect of tidal forces. We find that the first close encounter betwe…
We present {\it Hubble Space Telescope} {\it V,I} photometry of the central region of the LMC cluster NGC 1866, reaching magnitudes as faint as V=27 mag. We find evidence that the cluster luminosity function shows a strong dependence on the distance from the cluster center, with a clear deficiency of low luminosity stars in the inner region. We discuss a {\it global} cluster luminosity function as obtained from stars in all the investigated region, which appears in impressive agreement with the prediction from a Salpeter mass distribution. We also revisit the use of NGC 1866 as a probe for det…
We present BV CCD-data for 11 intermediate-age LMC clusters; the main conclusions are: 1. in the (V_to, V_cl,m) and (V-to, (V_to-V_cl,m)) planes the models yield a good overall description of the data; 2. with the current sample, it is impossible to firmly choose between "classical" and "overshooting" models; 3. the separation in colour between the MS band and the Red He-burning Clump is smaller than predicted by theoretical tracks; 4. the existence of the so-called "RGB phase-transition (Renzini and Buzzoni 1986) seems to be confirmed.
We present Hubble Space Telescope ACS deep photometry of the intermediate-age globular cluster NGC 1783 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. By using this photometric dataset, we have determined the degree of ellipticity of the cluster ($ε$=0.14$\pm$0.03) and the radial density profile. This profile is well reproduced by a standard King model with an extended core (r_c=24.5'') and a low concentration (c=1.16), indicating that the cluster has not experienced the collapse of the core. We also derived the cluster age, by using the Pisa Evolutionary Library (PEL) isochrones, with three different amount …
We report the results of the observations in the JHK bands of 12 globular clusters in the LMC, and present CMDs down to K=16 for about 450 stars. We merge the data with the BV ones presented in paper I and use the merged data to study the evolution of integrated magnitudes and colours of SSPs. We find that the AGB contributes about 60 percent of integrated clusters light in K, while the contribution from RGB is correlated with the age of the cluster. The age at which the first appearance of the RGB takes place depends on the models adopted ranging from about 600 Myr in the "classical" models t…
H2 column densities towards CO clouds in the LMC and SMC are estimated from their far-infrared surface brightness and HI column density. N(H2)/I(CO) conversion factors are X(LMC) = 1.3 and X(SMC) = 12 (unit: 10**21 mol cm**-2 (K km/s)**-1). LMC and SMC contain total (warm) H2 masses of 1.0 and 0.75 x 10**8 M(sun) respectively. Similar local H2/HI mass ratios are found in the magellanic irregulars NGC 1569 (X = 16), NGC 55, 4214 and 6822 (X = 3--6) and in NGC 4449 as well as the extragalactic HII regions NGC 604, 595 and 5461 in M 33 and M 101 (X = 1--2). The CO--H2 conversion factor X depends …
We have used deep high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope ACS observations to image the cluster NGC 1978 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This high-quality photometric data set allowed us to confirm the high ellipticity (~0.30+-0.02) of this stellar system. The derived Color Magnitude Diagram allowed a detailed study of the main evolutionary sequences: in particular we have detected the so called Bump along the Red Giant Branch (at V_{555}=19.10+-0.10). This is the first detection of this feature in an intermediate-age cluster. Moreover the morphology of the evolutionary sequence and their popula…
We have observed ten red giant stars in four old Large Magellanic Cloud globular clusters with the high-resolution spectrograph MIKE on the Magellan Landon Clay 6.5-m telescope. The stars in our sample have up to 20 elemental abundance determinations for the alpha-, iron-peak, and neutron-capture element groups. We have also derived abundances for the light odd-Z elements Na and Al. We find NGC 2005 and NGC 2019 to be more metal-rich than previous estimates from the Ca II triplet, and we derive [Fe/H] values closer to those obtained from the slope of the red giant branch. However, we confirm p…
Using data from the EROS2 microlensing survey, we report the discovery of two blue objects with irregular photometric behaviour of $ΔV \sim 0.1$-0.4 mag on time scales of 20 to 200 days. They show a bluer when fainter behaviour. Subsequent spectra taken with the ESO 3.6m telescope show spectral type B4eIII and B2eIV-V with strong $H α$ emission. These objects resemble the Herbig AeBe but also classical Be stars. At this stage, it is not possible to distinguish unambiguously between pre-main sequence and classical Be nature. If we favour the pre-main sequence interpretation, they are more lumin…
We discuss structural and kinematical properties of the stellar halo and the old globular cluster system (GCS) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) based on numerical simulations of the LMC formation. We particularly discuss the observed possible GCS's rotational kinematics (V/sigma > 2) that appears to be significantly different from the stellar halo's one with a large velocity dispersion (~50 km/s). We consider that both halo field stars and old GCs can originate from low-mass subhalos virialized at high redshifts (z >6). We investigate the final dynamical properties of the two old components…
We present a new deep (down to V ~ 24) photometry of a wide region (6'x 6') around the LMC globular cluster NGC1866: our sample is complete, down to 3 mag below the brightest MS star. Detailed comparisons with various theoretical scenarios using models computed with the evolutionary code FRANEC have been done reaching the following conclusions: both standard models (i.e. computed by adopting the Schwarzschild criterion to fix the border of the convective core) and models with an enlarged convective core (overshooting) lead to a fair fit of the MS but are not able to reproduce the luminosity an…
Presently unaccounted but quite probable "chemical factor" may be responsible for the formation of old metal-rich globular clusters (MRGCs) in spheroids, as well as of their conterparts, young (intermediate-age) massive star clusters (MSCs) in irregulars. Their formation presumably occurs at the same stage of the host galaxies' chemical evolution and is related to the essentially increased SF activity in the hosts around the same metallicity, Zsol/3 ([Fe/H]~-0.5). It is achieved very soon in massive spheroids, later in lower-mass spheroids, and (much) more later in irregulars.

Based on the earlier work of Gunn and McCrea we model the formation of globular clusters in merging galaxies. Neutral hydrogen observations of dwarf irregular galaxies as well as more luminous systems are used to provide the key parameters of the model. The observations indicate that clusters with the mass of globular clusters should still be forming today. The model is incorporated into a phenomenological picture of galaxy evolution making use of a simple chemical evolution model. These results are compared to recent observations of the metallicity distributions of F and G stars from a recent…
We discuss the origin of physical properties of globular cluster systems (GCSs) in galaxies in terms of galaxy formation and evolution processes. Based on numerical simulations of dynamical evolution of GCSs in galaxies, we particularly discuss (1) the origin of radial density profiles of GCSs, (2) kinematics of GCSs in elliptical galaxies, (3) transformation from nucleated dwarf galaxies into GCs (e.g., omega Centauri), and (4) the origin of GCSs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC).
The stellar content of the Im galaxy NGC 2366 is discussed on the basis of CCD BVR photometry. The three brightest blue and red stars have been used to estimate its distance, obtaining a balue of 2.9 Mpc. The spatial distribution of the young stellar population is discussed in the light of the integrated color indices and the color-magnitude diagrams of different zones of the galaxy. A generalized star formation burst seems to have taken place about 50 Myr ago. The youngest stars are preferentially formed in the South-West part of the bar, where the giant HII complex NGC 2363 is located, being…
The radial velocities of the 13 globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud have a dispersion of 28 km s$^{-1}$ relative to the HI rotation curve of the LMC, compared to a dispersion of 30 km s$^{-1}$ with regard to the mean globular cluster velocity. This shows that, contrary to a suggestion by Schommer et al. (1992), one cannot yet rule out the possibility that the LMC globular clusters formed in a pressure supported halo, rather than in rotating disk. The globular clusters in the LMC may therefore, after all, exhibit a relationship between age and kinematics that is similar to that of t…
Peak metallicities of metal-rich(MR) populations of GCs belonging to spheroids of different mass fall within the somewhat conservative -0.7<=[Fe/H]<=-0.3 range. Indeed, if possible age effects are taken into account, this metallicity range might become smaller. Irregulars, like the LMC, with longer timescales of their formation and lower star formation (SF) efficiency do not contain the old MRGCs with [Fe/H]>-1.0,but they are observed to form populations of young/ intermediate-age massive star clusters (MSCs) with masses exceeding 10^4 Msol. Their formation is widely believed to be accidental p…
We present low-resolution Keck spectroscopy for the globular cluster H VIII in the Local Group dIrr galaxy NGC 6822. We find the metallicity of the cluster to be [Fe/H]= -1.58 +/- 0.28 and the age of the cluster to be 3-4 Gyr, slightly older than but consistent with previous age estimates. H VIII seems to be more metal-poor than most intermediate-age globular clusters in the Local Group, and appears most similar to the anomalous Small Magellanic Cloud clusters Lindsay 113 and NGC 339.
We report the discovery of 5 new Herbig Ae/Be candidate stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud in addition to the 2 reported in Beaulieu et al. (2001). We discuss these 7 HAeBe candidate stars in terms of (1) their irregular photometric variability, (2) their near infrared emission, (3) their Halpha emission and (4) their spectral type. One star has the typical photometric behaviour that is observed only among Pre-Main Sequence UX Orionis type stars. The objects are more luminous than Galactic HAeBe stars and Large Magellanic Cloud HAeBe candidates of the same spectral type. The stars were discov…
The discovery of multiple MSs in NGC2808 and Omega Centauri, and multiple SGBs in NGC1851 and NGC6388 has challenged the long-held paradigm that GCs consist of simple stellar populations. This picture has been further complicated by recent studies of the LMC intermediate-age clusters, where the MSTO was found to be bimodal or broadened. We have undertaken a study of archival HST images of LMC and SMC clusters with the aim of measuring the frequency of clusters with evidence of multiple or prolonged star formation events and determining their main properties. In this paper, we analyse the CMD o…
We have used archival ROSAT data to present X-ray images of thirty-one supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have classified these remnants according to their X-ray morphologies, into the categories of Shell-Type, Diffuse Face, Centrally Brightened, Point-Source Dominated, and Irregular. We suggest possible causes of the X-ray emission for each category, and for individual features of some of the SNRs.
As first Paper of a series devoted to study the old stellar population in clusters and fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud, we present deep observations of NGC121 in the F555W and F814W filters, obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches ~3.5 mag below the main-sequence turn-off; deeper than any previous data. We derive the age of NGC121 using both absolute and relative age-dating methods. Fitting isochrones in the ACS photometric system to the observed ridge line of NGC121, gives ages of 11.8 +- 0.5 Gyr (Teramo),…
Taken together, key latest observations assume that (i) old metal-rich globular cluster populations (MRGCPs) in bulges were able to form due to essentially increased, self(internally)-induced star formation rate (SFR) in the hosts, while galaxy merging played an additional role; (ii) massive star cluster populations (MSCPs) in irregulars may be young, less prominent counterparts of the old MRGCPs in spheroids.
We report measurements of He I 5876 emission from the ionized gas outside the HII regions in three Magellanic irregular galaxies. The mean reddening-corrected He I / H-alpha intensity ratio is 0.041 independent of spatial location within each galaxy. This value is much higher than that measured in the warm ionized medium of the Milky Way and implies the DIG is ionized by radiation harder than that from a 40,000 K star.
The Pyxis globular cluster is a recently discovered globular cluster that lies in the outer halo (R_{gc} ~ 40 kpc) of the Milky Way. Pyxis lies along one of the proposed orbital planes of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and it has been proposed to be a detached LMC globular cluster captured by the Milky Way. We present the first measurement of the radial velocity of the Pyxis globular cluster based on spectra of six Pyxis giant stars. The mean heliocentric radial velocity is ~ 36 km/sec, and the corresponding velocity of Pyxis with respect to a stationary observer at the position of the Sun …
The structure of a very bright (MV = -10.9) globular cluster in NGC 1023 is analyzed on two sets of images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. From careful modeling of King profile fits to the cluster image, a core radius of 0.55+/-0.1 pc, effective radius 3.7+/-0.3 pc and a central V-band surface brightness of 12.9+/-0.5 mag / square arcsec are derived. This makes the cluster much more compact than Omega Cen, but very similar to the brightest globular cluster in M31, G1 = Mayall II. The cluster in NGC 1023 appears to be very highly flattened with an ellipticity of about 0.37, even higher t…
Metallicities for six double mode RR Lyrae's (RRd's) in the Large Magellanic Cloud have been estimated using the DeltaS method. The derived [Fe/H] values are in the range [Fe/H] = -1.09 to -1.78 (or -0.95 to -1.58, adopting a different calibration of [Fe/H] vs DeltaS). Two stars in our sample are at the very metal rich limit of all RRd's for which metal abundance has been estimated, either by direct measure (for field objects) or on the basis of the hosting system (for objects in globular clusters or external galaxies). These metal abundances, coupled with mass determinations from pulsational …
We compare the distribution of stars of different spectral types, and hence mean age, within the central SMC and find that the asymmetric structures are almost exclusively composed of young main sequence stars. Because of the relative lack of older stars in these features, and the extremely regular distribution of red giant and clump stars in the SMC central body, we conclude that tides alone are not responsible for the irregular appearance of the central SMC. The dominant physical mechanism in determining the current-day appearance of the SMC must be star formation triggered by a hydrodynamic…
A great burst of cluster formation increased the rate at which open clusters were formed in the Large Magellanic Cloud 3-5 Gyr ago by at least an order of magnitude. On the other hand the rate of star formation ~ 4 Gyr appears to have increased by a factor of only 2-4. This shows that the rate of cluster formation is not a good tracer of the rate at which stars are formed. Normalized to the same rate of star formation, the Large Cloud is presently forming / 600 times more star clusters than the Local Group dwarf irregular IC 1613. The high rate of cluster formation in merging gas-rich galaxies…
As part of a large HST project to study the formation and evolution of rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we present results for the Galactic bulge metal-rich globular cluster NGC6553. HST observations using WFPC2, NICMOS and STIS were obtained for this cluster. The primarily reason for studying NGC6553 is to allow the possibility to transform our NICMOS and STIS magnitudes directly into stellar masses. This is particularly important for determining the low mass end of the IMF. NGC 6553 was chosen because its metallicity, [Fe/H]$=-0.22\pm 0.05$, is representative of the metallic…
We present internal velocity dispersion determinations from high-resolution spectroscopic observations of a sample of nine globular clusters in M31. Comprehensive numerical simulations are used to show that the typical uncertainty of our velocity dispersion measurements is about 5%. Using these new velocity dispersions together with structural parameters derived from HST observations, we estimate the mass-to-light ratios of these clusters and find that they are typical of those measured for Galactic clusters. We show relations between velocity dispersion, luminosity and physical scales for glo…
We report on the first high-resolution spectroscopy of 10 giants in LMC Globular Clusters in a wide age range, obtained with the newly commissioned spectrograph UVES at VLT UT2. These observations are used to derive oxygen and iron content of these clusters, and the abundances are then used to cast a more precise view, not only on the age-metallicity relation in the LMC, but also on the chemical evolution of this dwarf irregular galaxy.
We are conducting a project aimed at surveys and repeated observations of red variables (or long-period variables) in globular clusters. Using the IRSF/SIRIUS near-infrared facility located at South Africa, we are observing 145 globular clusters that are accessible from the site. In this contribution, we present our observations and preliminary results. We have discovered many red variables, especially in the Bulge region, whose memberships to the clusters remain to be confirmed. Using a sample of all red variables (both already known and newly discovered ones) in globular clusters except thos…
We present details of the database from a large Cycle 7 HST project to study the formation and evolution of rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (see Elson et al., this volume). Our data set, which includes NICMOS, WFPC2 and STIS images of the cores and outer regions of 8 clusters, will enable us to derive deep luminosity functions for the clusters and to investigate the universality of the stellar initial mass function. We will look for age spreads in the youngest clusters, quantify the population of binary stars in the cores of the clusters and at the half-mass radii, and follow …
We present the results of a survey, the deepest to date, for HI emission at 21 cm and OH emission at 18 cm (lines at 1612, 1665, 1667 and 1720 MHz) in the direction towards the Galactic globular clusters M 15, M 2, NGC 6934, NGC 7006 and Pal 13. The aim is to measure the amount of hydrogen in the intra-cluster medium (ICM), and to find OH masers in the circumstellar envelopes of globular cluster red giants. We present a tentative detection of 0.3 Msun of neutral hydrogen in M 15 and possible detections of neutral hydrogen in M 2 and Pal 13. We derive upper limits to the neutral hydrogen conten…
(Abridged) We present the results of photometric measurements from images of the LMC globular clusters NGC 1928, 1939 and Reticulum taken with ACS on HST. F555W and F814W exposures result in high accuracy CMDs for these three clusters. This is the first time that CMDs for NGC 1928 and 1939 have been published. All three clusters possess CMDs with features indicating them to be >10 Gyr old, including main sequence turn-offs at V~23 and well populated HBs. We use the CMDs to obtain metallicity and reddening estimates for each cluster. NGC 1939 is a metal poor cluster, with [Fe/H] = -2.10 +/- 0.1…
We present high S/N integrated spectra of 24 star clusters in the LMC obtained using the FLAIR spectrograph at the UK Schmidt. The spectra have been placed onto the Lick/IDS system in order to test the calibration of Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models. We have compared the SSP-predicted metallicities of the clusters with literature Ca-Triplet values, and find that there is good agreement in the range --2.10 < [Fe/H] < 0. However, the magnesium indices systematically predict higher metallicities than iron, among the possible explanations for this are that the LMC clusters possess [alpha/Fe]…
The structures of globular clusters (GCs) reflect their dynamical states and past histories. High-resolution imaging allows the exploration of morphologies of clusters in other galaxies. Surface brightness profiles from new Hubble Space Telescope observations of 34 globular clusters in M31 are presented, together with fits of several different structural models to each cluster. M31 clusters appear to be adequately fit by standard King models, and do not obviously require alternate descriptions with relatively stronger halos, such as are needed to fit many GCs in other nearby galaxies. The deri…
We use the results from recent computations of updated non-linear convective pulsating models to constrain the distance modulus of Galactic globular clusters through the observed periods of first overtone RRc pulsators. The resulting relation between the mean absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars <M_V(RR)> and the heavy element content [Fe/H] appears well in the range of several previous empirical calibrations, but with a non linear dependence on [Fe/H] so that the slope of the relation increases when moving towards larger metallicities. On this ground, our results suggest that metal-poor ([Fe/…
We present spectroscopic observations of a massive globular cluster in the dwarf irregular galaxy Sextans B, discovered by us on Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (HST WFPC2) images. Long-slit spectra were obtained with the SCORPIO spectrograph on the the 6-m telescope at the Special Astrophysical observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. We determine age, metallicity and alpha-element abundance ratio for the globular cluster to be $ 2 \pm 1$ Gyr, $-1.35 \pm 0.25$ dex, and $ 0.1 \pm 0.1$ dex, respectively. Main photometric and structural parameters of it were deter…
We argue that globular clusters (GCs) are good candidates for gravitational lenses in explaining quasar-galaxy associations. The catalog of associations (Bukhmastova 2001) compiled from the LEDA catalog of galaxies (Paturel 1997) and from the catalog of quasars (Veron-Cetty and Veron 1998) is used. Based on the new catalog containing 8382 pairs, we show that one might expect an increased number of GCs around irregular galaxies of types 9 and 10 from the hypothesis that distant compact sources are gravitationally lensed by GCs in the halos of foreground galaxies. The King model is used to deter…
We have identified a small globular cluster in M31 located approximately 4 arcseconds northwest of the M31 globular cluster G185. While several multiple globular clusters have been observed in the Magellanic Clouds none have been found in the Galaxy or in M31. We estimate the probability of such a chance line-of-sight alignment occuring near the nucleus of M31 to be 0.09 +/- 0.03 and find no obvious indication of any tidal deformation in either cluster, as would be expected if the clusters were interacting. Two-dimensional modelling suggests G185 has a King (1966) [AJ, 71, 64] concentration of…
As part of an effort to enlarge the number of well-studied Magellanic-type galaxies, we obtained broadband optical imaging and neutral hydrogen radio synthesis observations of the dwarf irregular galaxy ESO 364-G 029. The optical morphology characteristically shows a bar-like main body with a one-sided spiral arm, an approximately exponential light distribution, and offset photometric and kinematic centers. The HI distribution is mildly asymmetric and, although slightly offset from the photometric center, roughly follows the optical brightness distribution, extending to over 1.2 Holmberg radii…
We present the results of a search for clusters in dwarf irregular galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Cluster using HST WFPC2 snapshot data. The galaxy sample includes 28 galaxies, 11 of which are confirmed members of the Virgo and Fornax clusters. In the 11 confirmed members, we detect 237 cluster candidates and determine their V magnitudes, V-I colors and core radii. After statistical subtraction of background galaxies and foreground stars, most of the cluster candidates have V-I colors of -0.2 and 1.4, V magnitudes lying between 20 and 25th magnitude and core radii between 0 and 6 pc. Using H…
We used the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope during the March 1995 Astro-2 mission to obtain a deep far-UV image of the globular cluster NGC 362, which was formerly thought to have an almost entirely red horizontal branch (HB). 84 hot (T_eff > 8500 K) stars were detected within a radius of 8'.25 of the cluster center. Of these, 43 have FUV magnitudes consistent with HB stars in NGC 362, and at least 34 are cluster members. The number of cluster members is made uncertain by background contamination from blue stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). There are six candidate supra-HB stars which ha…
We present deep J,H,Ks photometry and accurate Color Magnitude Diagrams down to K ~18.5, for a sample of 13 globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This data set combined with the previous sample of 6 clusters published by our group gives the opportunity to study the properties of giant stars in clusters with different ages (ranging from ~80 Myr up to ~3.5 Gyr). Quantitative estimates of star population ratios (by number and luminosity) in the Asymptotic Giant Branch, the Red Giant Branch and the He-clump, have been obtained and compared with theoretical models in the framework of pro…
We have identified 26 new globular cluster candidates in the inner 3 kpc of NGC 5128 (Cen A), the nearest known large galaxy being the probable product of a merger. The clusters are selected on the basis of their structural parameters (observed core diameters and ellipticities), as measured from archival WFPC HST images. IR photometry obtained with IRAC2B at the ESO/MPI 2.2-m telescope is combined with the optical HST photometry. Most of these clusters have normal colors typical of old globular clusters like those found in the Milky Way and M31. We estimate their metal abundances based on the …
High precision trigonometric parallaxes from the HIPPARCOS satellite and accurate metal abundances ([Fe/H], [O/Fe], and [alpha/Fe]) from high resolution spectroscopy for about 30 local subdwarfs have been used to derive distances and ages for a carefully selected sample of nine globular clusters. We find that HIPPARCOS parallaxes are smaller than the corresponding ground-based measurements leading, to a longer distance scale (~ 0.2 mag) and to ages ~ 2.8 Gyr younger. The relation between the zero age horizontal branch (ZAHB) absolute magnitude and metallicity for the nine programme clusters is…
That the RR Lyrae star period -- K-band luminosity relation is a promising tool as a distance indicator in the Milky Way and Local Group of Galaxies is apparent on observational and theoretical grounds in the literature. Less clear is the sensitivity of the relation, and consequently the physics of horizontal branch stars, to differences in stellar environment. In this paper, the first measurement of the (fundamental) period -- K-band luminosity relation for the central region of a globular cluster is presented. It is based on a sample of seven RR Lyrae stars imaged with adaptive optics. In ad…
We identify the rich Carbon star population of the Magellanic-type dwarf irregular galaxy WLM (Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte) and study its photometric properties from deep near-IR observations. The galaxy exhibits also a clear presence of Oxygen rich population. We derive a Carbon to M-star ratio of C/M=0.56(+/-0.12), relatively high in comparison with many galaxies. The spatial distribution of the AGB stars in WLM hints at the presence of two stellar complexes with a size of a few hundred parsecs. Using the HI map of WLM and the derived gas-to-dust ratio for this galaxy we re-determined the distance…
We present three types of chemical evolution models for irregular galaxies: closed-box with continuous star formation rates (SFRs), closed-box with bursting SFRs, and O-rich outflow with continuous SFRs. We discuss the chemical evolution of the irregular galaxies NGC 1560 and II Zw 33, and a ``typical'' irregular galaxy. The fraction of low-mass stars needed by our models is larger than that derived for the solar vicinity, but similar to that found in globular clusters. For our typical irregular galaxy we need a mass fraction of about 40% in the form of substellar objects plus non baryonic dar…
A sample of carbon-rich stars (C-stars) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was selected from the combined 2MASS and DENIS catalogues on the basis of their $J-K_s$ colour. This sample was extended to include confirmed C--stars from the Rebeirot et al. (1993) spectroscopic atlas. In this combined sample (N = 1152), a smaller number (N = 1079) were found to have MACHO observations. For this sub--sample, light curves were determined and 919 stars were found to have high quality light-curves with amplitudes of at least 0.05 mag. Of these stars, only 4% have a well--defined single period -- most of…
We determine the X-ray spectral properties of a sample of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) which reside in globular clusters of M31, as well as five LMXBs in Galactic globular clusters and in the Large Magellanic Cloud using the ROSAT PSPC. We find a trend in the X-ray properties of the LMXBs as a function of globular cluster metallicity. The spectra of LMXBs become progressively softer as the metallicity of its environment increases. The one M31 globular cluster LMXB in our sample which has a metallicity greater than solar has spectral properties similar to those of LMXBs in the bulge of M31, …
Recent observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) have revealed that the HI gas shows a significant amount of rotation (V_c 60 km/s), while no or little rotation is evident for the old stellar populations. We suggest that this unique kinematical difference between these components in the SMC can be caused by a major merger event which occurred in the early stage of the SMC formation. Our simulations show that dissipative dwarf-dwarf merging can transform two gas-rich dwarf irregulars into a new dwarf, which consists of a spheroidal stellar component and a rotating extended HI disk. The r…
We present a study of the old globular cluster (GC) population of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1427A using multi-wavelength VLT observations in U, B, V, I, H_alpha, J, H, and Ks bands under excellent observing conditions. We applied color and size selection criteria to select old GC candidates and made use of archival ACS images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope to reject contaminating background sources and blended objects from the GC candidates' list. The H_alpha observations were used to check for contamination due to compact, highly reddened young star clusters whose colors and sizes…
We have used the latest HI observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Parkes telescope, to re-examine the kinematics of this dwarf, irregular galaxy. A large velocity gradient is found in the HI velocity field with a significant symmetry in iso-velocity contours, suggestive of a differential rotation. A comparison of HI data with the predictions from tidal models for the SMC evolution suggests that the central region of the SMC corresponds to the central, disk- or bar-like, component left from the rotationally supported SMC dis…
