We argue that a fundamental (conjectured) property of memoryless quantum channels, namely the strong superadditivity, is intimately related to the decreasing property of the quantum relative entropy. Using the latter we first give, for a wide class of input states, an estimation of the output entropy for phase damping channels and some Weyl quantum channels. Then we prove, without any input restriction, the strong superadditivity for several quantum channels, including depolarizing quantum channels, quantum-classical channels and quantum erasure channels.
Losses in quantum communication lines severely affect the rates of reliable information transmission and are usually considered to be state-independent. However, the loss probability does depend on the system state in general, with the polarization dependent losses being a prominent example. Here we analyze biased trace decreasing quantum operations that assign different loss probabilities to states and introduce the concept of a generalized erasure channel. We find lower and upper bounds for the classical and quantum capacities of the generalized erasure channel as well as characterize its de…
In this paper, we examine the superadditivity of convex roof coherence measures. We put forward a theorem on the superadditivity of convex roof coherence measures, which provides a sufficient condition to identify the convex roof coherence measures fulfilling the superadditivity. By applying the theorem to each of the known convex roof coherence measures, we prove that the coherence of formation and the coherence concurrence are superadditive, while the geometric measure of coherence, the convex roof coherence measure based on linear entropy, the convex roof coherence measure based on fidelity…
Given a quantum channel $Φ$ in a Hilbert space $H$ put $\hat H_Φ(ρ)=\min \limits_{ρ_{av}=ρ}Σ_{j=1}^{k}π_{j}S(Φ(ρ_{j}))$, where $ρ_{av}=Σ_{j=1}^{k}π_{j}ρ_{j}$, the minimum is taken over all probability distributions $π=\{π_{j}\}$ and states $ρ_{j}$ in $H$, $S(ρ)=-Trρ\logρ$ is the von Neumann entropy of a state $ρ$. The strong superadditivity conjecture states that $\hat H_{Φ\otimes Ψ}(ρ)\ge \hat H_Φ(Tr_{K}(ρ))+\hat H_Ψ(Tr_{H}(ρ))$ for two channels $Φ$ and $Ψ$ in Hilbert spaces $H$ and $K$, respectively. We have proved the strong superadditivity conjecture for the quantum depolarizing channel in…

The continuity properties of the convex closure of the output entropy of infinite dimensional channels and their applications to the additivity problem are considered. The main result of this paper is the statement that the superadditivity of the convex closure of the output entropy for all finite dimensional channels implies the superadditivity of the convex closure of the output entropy for all infinite dimensional channels, which provides the analogous statements for the strong superadditivity of the EoF and for the additivity of the minimal output entropy. The above result also provides in…
The property of superadditivity of the quantum relative entropy states that, in a bipartite system $\mathcal{H}_{AB}=\mathcal{H}_A \otimes \mathcal{H}_B$, for every density operator $ρ_{AB}$ one has $ D( ρ_{AB} || σ_A \otimes σ_B ) \ge D( ρ_A || σ_A ) +D( ρ_B || σ_B) $. In this work, we provide an extension of this inequality for arbitrary density operators $ σ_{AB} $. More specifically, we prove that $ α(σ_{AB})\cdot D({ρ_{AB}}||{σ_{AB}}) \ge D({ρ_A}||{σ_A})+D({ρ_B}||{σ_B})$ holds for all bipartite states $ρ_{AB}$ and $σ_{AB}$, where $α(σ_{AB})= 1+2 || σ_A^{-1/2} \otimes σ_B^{-1/2} \, σ_{AB} …
We simplify some conjectures in quantum information theory; the additivity of minimal output entropy, the multiplicativity of maximal output p-norm and the superadditivity of convex closure of output entropy. We construct a unital channel for a given channel so that they share the above additivity properties; we can reduce the conjectures for all channels to those for unital channels.
We study subadditivity of the minimum output entropy ($H_{min}$) of quantum multiple access channels (MACs). We provide an example of violation of the additivity theorem for $H_{min}$ known in classical information theory. Our result is based on a fundamental property of $MACs$ i.e. independence of each sender. The channels used in the example can be constructed explicitly. On the basis of subadditivity of $H_{min}$ we also provide an example of extremal superadditivity (super activation) of the classical capacity region of MACs.
In this Letter, two counterexamples show that the superadditivity inequality of relative entropy is not true even for the full-ranked quantum states. Thus, an inequality of quantum channels and complementary channels is not also true. Finally, a conjecture of weak superadditivity inequality is presented.
We show that for the tensor product of an entanglement-breaking quantum channel with an arbitrary quantum channel, both the minimum entropy of an output of the channel and the Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland capacity are additive. In addition, for the tensor product of two arbitrary quantum channels, we give a bound involving entanglement of formation for the amount of subadditivity (for minimum entropy output) or superadditivity (for channel capacity) that can occur.
We obtained the estimation from below for the output entropy of a tensor product of the quantum phase-damping channel with an arbitrary channel. It is shown that from this estimation immediately follows that the strong superadditivity of the output entropy holds for this channel as well as for the quantum depolarizing channel.
In this paper, we consider the minimal entropy of qubit states transmitted through two uses of a noisy quantum channel, which is modeled by the action of a completely positive trace-preserving (or stochastic) map. We provide strong support for the conjecture that this minimal entropy is additive, namely that the minimum entropy can be achieved when product states are transmitted. Explicitly, we prove that for a tensor product of two unital stochastic maps on qubit states, using an entanglement that involves only states which emerge with minimal entropy cannot decrease the entropy below the min…
We define the coherence non-generating channel as the completely positive trace-preserving map which does not generate quantum coherence from an incoherent state. The incoherent operations are the strict subset of the coherence non-generating channels. We prove that the relative entropy of coherence is monotonically decreasing under the coherence non-generating channels, while the coherence of formation may increase under such channels. Interestingly, by combining mathematically the coherence of formation to the entanglement of formation, we show that the coherence of formation of a single-qub…
We provide an upper bound on the quasi-relative entropy in terms of the trace distance. The bound is derived for two cases: 1) any operator monotone decreasing function and full rank mixed qubit or classical states; 2) a large class of operator monotone decreasing function and any mixed qubit or classical states. Moreover, we derive an upper bound for the Umegaki and Tsallis relative entropies in the case of any finite-dimensional states. The bound for the relative entropy improves the known bounds for some states in any dimensions larger than four. The bound for the Tsallis entropy improves t…
We make a number of simplifications in Gour and Friedland's proof of local additivity of minimum output entropy of a quantum channel. We follow them in reframing the question as one about entanglement entropy of bipartite states associated with a $d_B \times d_E $ matrix. We use a different approach to reduce the general case to that of a square positive definite matrix. We use the integral representation of the log to obtain expressions for the first and second derivatives of the entropy, and then exploit the modular operator and functional calculus to streamline the proof following their und…
We study relative entropy in QFT, comparing the vacuum state to a special family of purifications determined by an input state and constructed using relative modular flow. We use this to prove a conjecture by Wall that relates the shape derivative of relative entropy to a variational expression over the averaged null energy of possible purifications. This variational expression can be used to easily prove the quantum null energy condition. We formulate Wall's conjecture as a theorem pertaining to operator algebras satisfying the properties of a half-sided modular inclusion, with the additional…

Recently, a substantial amount of debate has grown up around a proposed quantum resolution to the `arrow of time dilemma' that is based on the role of classical memory records of entropy-decreasing events. In this note we show that the argument is incomplete and furthermore, by providing a counter-example, argue that it is incorrect. Instead of quantum mechanics providing a resolution in the manner suggested, it allows enhanced classical memory records of entropy-decreasing events.
We reduce the number of open additivity problems in quantum information theory by showing that four of them are equivalent. We show that the conjectures of additivity of the minimum output entropy of a quantum channel, additivity of the Holevo expression for the classical capacity of a quantum channel, additivity of the entanglement of formation, and strong superadditivity of the entanglement of formation, are either all true or all false.
It is shown that in order for the solutions of the Lindblad equation never to give a decreasing von Neumann entropy, it is necessary and sufficient that the operators appearing in this equation should be unitary linear combinations of their adjoints. In this case, these operators may be replaced with Hermitian operators, without changing the evolution of density matrices.
We study the dynamics of quantum memory assist entropy uncertainty for qutrit system coupled to an environment modeled by random matrices. The results show that the effect of relative coupling strength on entropy uncertainty is opposite in Markov region and non-Markov region, and the influence of a common environment and independent environments in Markov region and non-Markov region is also opposite. One can reduce the entropy uncertainty by decreasing relative coupling strength or puting the system in two separate environments in the Markov case. In the non-Markov case, the entropy uncertain…
The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the entropy of a closed system is non-decreasing. Discussing the Second Law in the quantum world poses new challenges and provides new opportunities, involving fundamental quantum-information-theoretic questions and novel quantum-engineered devices. In quantum mechanics, systems with an evolution described by a so-called unital quantum channel evolve with a non-decreasing entropy. Here, we seek the opposite, a system described by a non-unital and, furthermore, energy-conserving channel that describes a system whose entropy decreases with time. We pr…
A quantum coordinate-entropy formulated in quantum phase space has been recently proposed together with an entropy law that asserts that such entropy can not decrease over time. The coordinate-entropy is dimensionless, a relativistic scalar, and it is invariant under coordinate and CPT transformations. We study here the time evolution of this entropy. We show that the entropy associated with coherent states evolving under a Dirac Hamiltonian is increasing. However, for the collisions of two particles, where each is evolving as a coherent state, as they come closer to each other their spatial e…
We investigate the Weyl channels being covariant with respect to the maximum commutative group of unitary operators. This class includes the quantum depolarizing channel and the "two-Pauli" channel as well. Then, we show that our estimation of the output entropy for a tensor product of the phase damping channel and the identity channel based upon the decreasing property of the relative entropy allows to prove the additivity conjecture for the minimal output entropy for the quantum depolarizing channel in any prime dimesnsion and for the "two Pauli" channel in the qubit case.
Negative quantum conditional entropy states are key ingredients for information theoretic tasks such as superdense coding, state merging and one-way entanglement distillation. In this work, we ask: how does one detect if a channel is useful in preparing negative conditional entropy states? We answer this question by introducing the class of A-unital channels, which we show are the largest class of conditional entropy non-decreasing channels. We also prove that A-unital channels are precisely the completely free operations for the class of states with non-negative conditional entropy. Furthermo…
Consider an ensemble of pure quantum states |ψ_j>, j=1,...,n taken with prior probabilities p_j respectively. We show that it is possible to increase all of the pairwise overlaps |<ψ_i|ψ_j>| i.e. make each constituent pair of the states more parallel (while keeping the prior probabilities the same), in such a way that the von Neumann entropy S is increased, and dually, make all pairs more orthogonal while decreasing S. We show that this phenomenon cannot occur for ensembles in two dimensions but that it is a feature of almost all ensembles of three states in three dimensions. It is known that …
We numerically analyze the dynamical generation of quantum entanglement in a system of 2 interacting particles, started in a coherent separable state, for decreasing values of $\hbar$. As $\hbar\to 0$ the entanglement entropy, computed at any finite time, converges to a finite nonzero value. The limit law that rules the time dependence of entropy is well reproduced by purely classical computations. Its general features may then be explained by simple classical arguments, which expose the different ways entanglement is generated in systems which are classically chaotic or regular.
The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that temporal evolution of an isolated system occurs with non-diminishing entropy. In quantum realm, this holds for energy-isolated systems the evolution of which is described by the so-called unital quantum channel. The entropy of a system evolving in a non-unital quantum channel can, in principle, decrease. We formulate a general criterion of unitality for the evolution of a quantum system, enabling a simple and rigorous approach for finding and identifying the processes accompanied by decreasing entropy in energy-isolated systems. We discuss two examp…
We consider entangled state production utilizing a full optomechanical arrangement, based on which we create entanglement between two far three-level V-type atoms using a quantum repeater protocol. At first, we consider eight identical atoms (1; 2;...; 8), while adjacent pairs (i; i + 1) with i = 1; 3; 5; 7 have been prepared in entangled states and the atoms 1, 8 are the two target atoms. The three-level atoms (1,2,3,4) and (5,6,7,8) distinctly become entangled with the system including optical and mechanical modes by performing the interaction in optomechanical cavities between atoms (2,3) a…

It is well known in the realm of quantum mechanics and information theory that the entropy is non-decreasing for the class of unital physical processes. However, in general, the entropy does not exhibit monotonic behavior. This has restricted the use of entropy change in characterizing evolution processes. Recently, a lower bound on the entropy change was provided in the work of Buscemi, Das, and Wilde~[Phys.~Rev.~A~93(6),~062314~(2016)]. We explore the limit that this bound places on the physical evolution of a quantum system and discuss how these limits can be used as witnesses to characteri…
The scattering amplitude in simple quantum graphs is a well-known process which may be highly complex. In this work, motivated by the Shannon entropy, we propose a methodology that associates to a graph a scattering entropy, which we call the average scattering entropy. It is defined by taking into account the period of the scattering amplitude which we calculate using the Green's function procedure. We first describe the methodology on general grounds, and then exemplify our findings considering several distinct groups of graphs. We go on and investigate other possibilities, one that contains…
We determine the minimum Wehrl entropy among the quantum states with a given von Neumann entropy, and prove that it is achieved by thermal Gaussian states. This result determines the relation between the von Neumann and the Wehrl entropies. The key idea is proving that the quantum-classical channel that associates to a quantum state its Husimi Q representation is asymptotically equivalent to the Gaussian quantum-limited amplifier with infinite amplification parameter. This equivalence also permits to determine the p->q norms of the aforementioned quantum-classical channel in the two particular…
I show that non-decreasing entropy provides a necessary and sufficient condition to convert the state of a physical system into a different state by a reversible transformation that acts on the system of interest and a further "catalyst" whose state has to remain invariant exactly in the transition. This statement is proven both in the case of finite-dimensional quantum mechanics, where von~Neumann entropy is the relevant entropy, and in the case of systems whose states are described by probability distributions on finite sample spaces, where Shannon entropy is the relevant entropy. The result…
The issue of the Gibbs paradox is that when considering mixing of two gases within classical thermodynamics, the entropy of mixing appears to be a discontinuous function of the difference between the gases: it is finite for whatever small difference, but vanishes for identical gases. The resolution offered in the literature, with help of quantum mixing entropy, was later shown to be unsatisfactory precisely where it sought to resolve the paradox. Macroscopic thermodynamics, classical or quantum, is unsuitable for explaining the paradox, since it does not deal explicitly with the difference bet…
Given a locally consistent set of reduced density matrices, we construct approximate density matrices which are globally consistent with the local density matrices we started from when the trial density matrix has a tree structure. We employ the cavity method of statistical physics to find the optimal density matrix representation by slowly decreasing the temperature in an annealing algorithm, or by minimizing an approximate Bethe free energy depending on the reduced density matrices and some cavity messages originated from the Bethe approximation of the entropy. We obtain the classical Bethe …
