We investigate whether angular momentum transport due to unstable pulsation modes can play a significant role in the rotational evolution of massive stars. We find that these modes can redistribute appreciable angular momentum, and moreover trigger shear-instability mixing in the molecular weight gradient zone adjacent to stellar cores, with significant evolutionary impact.
To improve the understanding of the pulsational instabilities of some of the PG1159-type pre-white dwarfs we performed detailed stability analyses on helium star evolutionary models. With the canonical chemical compositions, pulsational instabilities were encountered for all stellar masses considered (0.57, 0.63, 0.7 M_sol). The blue boundary agrees satisfactorily with observations. The red edge, on the other hand, is found to extend lower temperatures than presently admitted by observers. The dependence of the pulsational instabilities on helium or even hydrogen abundance in the stellar envel…
(Abridged) The Cataclysmic Variable (CV) population harbors a diverse range of donor stars and accreting white dwarfs (WDs). A range of WD masses is expected, from low mass Helium core WDs, to massive WDs which have previously accreted at rates high enough for Hydrogen to burn steadily. Furthermore, a wide range of Helium enrichment is expected in the accreted material depending on the degree to which the donor star is evolved. We investigate the impact of this diversity on the range of effective temperatures ($T_{\rm eff}$) for which g-modes are unstable. The critical $T_{\rm eff}$ below whic…
We report the first comprehensive investigation of the line profile variation caused by non-radial pulsation in a magnetic oscillating chemically peculiar star. Spectrum variation of the well-known roAp star HR 3831 is detected using very high-resolution high signal-to-noise spectroscopic time-series observations and are followed through the whole rotation cycle of the star. We confirm outstanding diversity of pulsational behaviour of different lines in the HR 3831 spectrum and attribute this phenomenon to an interplay between extreme vertical chemical inhomogeneity of the HR 3831 atmosphere a…
We present a study of instabilities occuring in thick magnetized accretion disks. We calculate the growth rates of these instabilities and characterise precisely the contribution of the magneto-rotational and the convective mechanism. All our calculations are performed in radially stratified disks in the cylindrical limit. The numerical calculations are performed using the appropriate local dispersion equation solver discussed in Blokland et al. (2005). A comparison with recent results by Narayan et al. (2002) shows excellent agreement with their approximate growth rates only if the disks are …
We investigate the evolutionary behavior of stellar structures with metallicity Z=0.04 in order to disclose theoretical expectations for both evolutionary and pulsational behaviors of Super-Metal-Rich (SMR) objects, which are found in the solar neighborhood, in the Galactic bulge and in elliptical galaxies. We find that at the exhaustion of central helium SMR stars definitely undergo the gravonuclear instabilities previously found in some He burning structures with solar metallicity (Bono et al. 1997b). On the basis of the evolutionary scenario, we investigate the expected pulsational behavior…
We consider the combined role of the thermal ionization, magneto-rotational and gravitational instabilities in thin accretion disks around supermassive black holes. We find that in the portions of the disk unstable to the ionization instability, the gas remains well coupled to the magnetic field even on the cold, neutral branch of the thermal limit cycle. This suggests that the ionization instability is not a significant source of large amplitude time-dependent accretion in AGN. We also argue that, for accretion rates greater than 10^{-2} solar masses per year, the gravitationally unstable and…
We present new results of a stability analysis of realistic models of post-extreme horizontal branch stars. We find that g-mode instabilities develop in some of these models as a result of a potent epsilon-mechanism associated with the presence of an active H-burning shell. The epsilon-process drives low order and low degree g-modes with typical periods in the range 40-125 s. The unstable models populate a broad instability strip covering the interval 76,000 K > ~ T_eff >~ 44,000 K, and are identified with low-mass DAO white dwarfs. They descend from stars that reach the zero-age "extended" ho…
Angular momentum transport must have occurred in the Sun's radiative zone to explain its current solid body rotation. We survey the stability of the early Sun's radiative zone with respect to diffusive rotational instabilities, for a variety of plausible past configurations. We find that the (faster rotating) early Sun was prone to rotational instabilities even if only weak levels of radial differential rotation were present, while the current Sun is not. Stability domains are determined by approximate balance between dynamical and diffusive timescales, allowing generalizations to other stella…
We extend our previous pulsational stability analyses of PG 1159 stars by modeling the hybrid PG 1159 type star Abell 43. We show that the standard kappa-mechanism due to the ionization of C and O in the envelope of this H-rich PG 1159 star is perfectly able to drive g-mode pulsations. Thus, contrary to a recent suggestion, there is no need to invoke any new or exotic mechanism to explain the pulsational instabilities observed in this particular star. Our expected instability band for l = 1 modes extends in period from ~ 2604 s to ~ 5529 s, which is consistent with the available photometric ob…
We undertook a multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cephei star Nu Eridani. More than 600 hours of differential photoelectric uvyV photometry were obtained with 11 telescopes during 148 clear nights. The frequency analysis of our measurements shows that the variability of Nu Eri can be decomposed into 23 sinusoidal components, eight of which correspond to independent pulsation frequencies between 5 - 8 c/d. Some of these are arranged in multiplets, which suggests rotational m-mode splitting of nonradial pulsation modes as the cause. If so, the rotation period of the star must be between…
Since the use of high-resolution high signal-to-noise spectroscopy in the study of massive stars, it became clear that an ad-hoc velocity field at the stellar surface, termed macroturbulence, is needed to bring the observed shape of spectral lines into agreement with observations. We seek a physical explanation of this unknown broadening mechanism. We interprete the missing line broadening in terms of collective pulsational velocity broadening due to non-radial gravity-mode oscillations. We also point out that the rotational velocity can be seriously underestimated whenever the line profiles a…
We report on the first three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of secular and dynamical non-axisymmetric instabilities in collapsing, rapidly rotating stellar cores which extend well beyond core bounce. The resulting gravitational radiation has been calculated using the quadrupole approximation. We find that secular instabilities do not occur during the simulated time interval of several 10 ms. Models which become dynamically unstable during core collapse show a strong nonlinear growth of non-axisymmetric instabilities. Both random and coherent large scale initial perturbations eventually g…
A core-collapse supernova might produce large amplitude gravitational waves if, through the collapse process, the inner core can aquire enough rotational energy to become dynamically unstable. In this report I present the results of 3-D numerical simulations of core collapse supernovae. These simulations indicate that for some initial conditions the post-collapse inner core is indeed unstable. However, for the cases considered, the instability does not produce a large gravitational-wave signal.
To what extent can pulsational instabilities resolve the mass-loss problem of massive stars? How important is pulsation in structuring and modulating the winds of these stars? What role does pulsation play in redistributing angular momentum in massive stars? Although I cannot offer answers to these questions, I hope at the very least to explain how they come to be asked.
The delta Scuti star X Caeli has been the target of a simultaneous photometric (14 consecutive nights) and spectroscopic campaign (8 consecutive nigths). From the analysis of light curves we were able to pick up 17 frequency components, most of which were already detected in two previous campaigns. The comparison with the results of the previous campaigns shows that while some terms are rather stable (in particular the dominant mode at 7.39 c/d) others have conspicuous amplitude variations. 14 photometric terms have been also detected in the radial velocity curve or in the analysis of the line…
We present analytical and numerical studies of magnetorotational instabilities occuring in magnetized accretion disks. In these studies we make use of the linearised compressible MHD equations. These calculations are performed for general radially stratified disks in the cylindrical limit. In particular, we investigate the influence of nonvanishing toroidal magnetic field component on the growth rate and oscillation frequency of magnetorotational instabilities in Keplerian disks. We find the persistence of these instabilities in accretion disks close to equipartition. Our calculations show tha…
One interesting class of gravitational radiation sources includes rapidly rotating astrophysical objects that encounter dynamical instabilities. We have carried out a set of simulations of rotationally induced instabilities in differentially rotating polytropes. An $n$=1.5 polytrope with the Maclaurin rotation law will encounter the $m$=2 bar instability at $T/|W| \gtrsim 0.27$. Our results indicate that the remnant of this instability is a persistent bar-like structure that emits a long-lived gravitational radiation signal. Furthermore, dynamical instability is shown to occur in $n$=3.33 poly…
Recent developments on the rotational instabilities of relativistic stars are reviewed. The article provides an account of the theory of stellar instabilities with emphasis on the rotational ones. Special attention is being paid to the study of these instabilities in the general relativistic regime. Issues such as the existence relativistic r-modes, the existence of a continuous spectrum and the CFS instability of the w-modes are discussed in the second half of the article.
We report a multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cephei star 12 Lacertae. 750 hours of high-quality differential photoelectric Stromgren, Johnson and Geneva time-series photometry were obtained with 9 telescopes during 190 nights. Our frequency analysis results in the detection of 23 sinusoidal signals in the light curves. Eleven of those correspond to independent pulsation modes, and the remainder are combination frequencies. We find some slow aperiodic variability such as that seemingly present in several Beta Cephei stars. We perform mode identification from our colour photometry, de…
To explain the origin of Herbig Ae/Be stars activity, it has been recently proposed that strong mass-losses trigger rotational instabilities in the envelope of fast rotating stars. The kinetic energy transferred to turbulent motions would then be the energy source of the active phenomena observed in the outer atmosphere of Herbig Ae/Be stars (Vigneron et al. 1990; Lignieres et al. 1996). In this paper, we present a one-dimensional model of angular momentum transport which allows to estimate the degree of differential rotation induced by mass-loss. Gradients of angular velocity are very close t…
The stability of metal-free very massive stars ($Z$ = 0; $M = 120 - 500 \msol$) is analyzed and compared with metal-enriched stars. Such zero-metal stars are unstable to nuclear-powered radial pulsations on the main sequence, but the growth time scale for these instabilities is much longer than for their metal-rich counterparts. Since they stabilize quickly after evolving off the ZAMS, the pulsation may not have sufficient time to drive appreciable mass loss in Z = 0 stars. For reasonable assumptions regarding the efficiency of converting pulsational energy into mass loss, we find that, even f…
We present nonlinear three-dimensional simulations of the stably-stratified portion of the solar tachocline in which the rotational shear is maintained by mechanical forcing. When a broad toroidal field profile is specified as an initial condition, a clam-shell instability ensues which is similar to the freely-evolving cases studied previously. After the initial nonlinear saturation, the residual mean fields are apparently too weak to sustain the instability indefinitely. However, when a mean poloidal field is imposed in addition to the rotational shear, a statistically-steady state is achieve…
PG 1605+072 has unique pulsational properties amongst the members of the new class of pulsating sdB (EC 14026) stars. It has the longest periods and the richest, most puzzling frequency spectrum (55 periods). We present a quantitative analysis of a Keck HIRES spectrum using NLTE and LTE model atmospheres. Atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, log(He/H)), metal abundances, and the rotational velocity are determined. He, C, N and O are subsolar as well as the intermediate mass elements Mg and Si, whereas Ne and Fe are solar. This abundance pattern is caused by diffusion. PG 1605+072 displays cons…
The processes contributing to the evolution of an initially weak magnetic field in a differentially rotating star are reviewed. These include rotational smoothing (akin to convective expulsion) and a list of about 5 instabilities, among them magnetorotational instability, byoyancy instability, and pinch-type instabilities. The important effects of thermal and magnetic diffusion on these instabilities are analyzed in some detail. The first instability to set in is a pinch-type instability. It becomes important in modifying the field configuration before magnetic buoyancy-driven instabilities se…
We carry out 3-D numerical simulations of the dynamical instability in rapidly rotating stars initially modeled as polytropes with n = 1.5, 1.0, and 0.5. The calculations are done with a SPH code using Newtonian gravity, and the gravitational radiation is calculated in the quadrupole limit. All models develop the global m=2 bar mode, with mass and angular momentum being shed from the ends of the bar in two trailing spiral arms. The models then undergo successive episodes of core recontraction and spiral arm ejection, with the number of these episodes increasing as n decreases: this results in …
We examine pulsational stability of low $m$ $r$ modes in SPB stars by calculating fully nonadiabatic oscillations of uniformly rotating stars, where $m$ is an integer representing the azimuthal wave number around the rotation axis. $R$ modes are rotationally induced, non-axisymmetric, oscillation modes, whose oscillation frequency strongly depends on the rotation frequency $Ω$ of the star. They are conveniently classified by using two integer indices $m$ and $l^\prime\ge |m|$ that define the asymptotic oscillation frequency $2mΩ/[l^\prime(l^\prime+1)]$ in the limit of $Ω\to 0$. We find low $m$…
The timescale of de-leptonization by neutrino loss and associated contraction of a proto-neutron star is short compared to the time to progagate a shock through the helium core of a massive star, and so the de-leptonization phase does not occur in the vacuum of space, but within the supernova ambiance whether or not there has been a successful explosion. Dynamical non-axisymmetric instabilities (NAXI) are predicted for sufficiently strongly differentially rotating proto-neutron stars. Some modes are unstable for small values of the ratio of rotational kinetic energy to binding energy, T/|W| > …
A one-armed spiral instability has been found to develop in differentially rotating stellar models that have a relatively stiff, $n=1$ polytropic equation of state and a wide range of rotational energies. This suggests that such instabilities can arise in neutron stars that are differentially, although not necessarily rapidly, rotating. The instability seems to be directly triggered by the presence of a corotation resonance inside the star. Our analysis also suggests that a resonant cavity resulting from a local minimum in the radial vortensity profile of the star plays an important role in am…
On the basis of our new simultaneous photometry and spectroscopy (885 uvby differential measurements in 11 nights and 154 spectrograms of the FeII 4508 A region in 5 nights), we can detect 12 probable periodicities in the variability pattern of this star, determining the frequencies of 7 without any ambiguity. Through a direct fit of pulsational models to our data, we estimate the inclination of rotational axis to be about 50 deg. and get a reliable identification of 4 modes as well as useful bits of information about the others: no retrograde mode is visible, whereas the star seems to show a …
We present the preliminary results of a detailed theoretical investigation on the hydrodynamical properties of Red Supergiant (RSG) stars at solar chemical composition and for stellar masses ranging from 10 to 20 M_sun. We find that the main parameter governing their hydrodynamical behavior is the effective temperature, and indeed when moving from higher to lower effective temperatures the models show an increase in the dynamical perturbations. Also, we find that RSGs are pulsationally unstable for a substantial portion of their lifetimes. These dynamical instabilities play a key role in drivi…
We study the nature of non-axisymmetric dynamical instabilities in differentially rotating stars with both linear eigenmode analysis and hydrodynamic simulations in Newtonian gravity. We especially investigate the following three types of instability; the one-armed spiral instability, the low T/|W| bar instability, and the high T/|W| bar instability, where T is the rotational kinetic energy and W is the gravitational potential energy. The nature of the dynamical instabilities is clarified by using a canonical angular momentum as a diagnostic. We find that the one-armed spiral and the low T/|W|…
We derive expressions and develop a numerical technique for the analysis of the line profile moment variations for stars pulsating in oblique non-radial modes. This represents an extension of the widely used spectroscopic moment mode identification method to the oblique distorted pulsations observed in rapidly oscillating Ap stars. We demonstrate that a non-axisymmetric superposition of the pulsation and rotation velocity fields results in a qualitatively new behaviour of some of the line profile characteristics. It is found that for the majority of roAp stars the second moment varies with the…
In two previous publications$^{1,2}$, we have demonstrated that stationary rotation of magnetized plasma about a compact central object permits an enormous number of different MHD instabilities, with the well-known magneto-rotational instability as just one of them. We here concentrate on the new instabilities found that are driven by transonic transitions of the poloidal flow. A particularly promising class of instabilities, from the point of view of MHD turbulence in accretion disks, is the class of {\em trans-slow Alfven continuum modes}, that occur when the poloidal flow exceeds a critical…
