The basic idea of jet tomography is to infer information about the density evolution of the medium created in heavy-ion (A-A) collisions by studying the suppression of hard probes in an A-A environment as compared to the baseline process known from p-p collisions. The suppression of back-to-back correlations in heavy-ion collisions allows, due to a different geometrical bias, a view into the medium which is qualitatively different from the one offered by single hadron suppression. A control parameter for the suppression corresponding to a systematic variation of in-medium pathlengths and density can be obtained by studying collisions at finite impact parameter b. A systematic variation of pathlength can then be introduced by studying the suppression pattern as a function of the angle phi with the reaction plane. Using a 3-d hydrodynamical evolution model for the medium and a Monte-Carlo model which has been shown to successfully reproduce the measured suppression of back-to-back correlations in central collisions of Au-Au at 200 AGeV, we compute the suppression as a function of phi for b of 2.4 fm. 4.5 fm, 6.3 fm and 7.5 fm. Given that this involves variations in both control parameters b and phi a comparison with data should eventually allow to place strong constraints on the combination of energy loss model and medium evolution model.
In the context of the hybrid strong/weak coupling model for jet quenching, we perform a global fit to hadron and jet data in the most central bins both at RHIC and LHC. The qualitative and quantitative success of the analysis is attributed to the fact that the model correctly captures the fact that wider jets lose, on average, more energy than the narrower ones, to which high energy hadrons belong. We show how one can understand the relative jet and hadron suppression by analyzing the jet fragmentation functions, and also discuss the role of plasma finite resolution effects.
The suppression of heavy quarkonia e.g. $J/ψ$, $Υ$ etc. is considered as a suitable probe to identify the nature of the matter created in heavy ion collisions. Recently we have presented a modified colour screening model for $J/ψ$ suppression in the quark gluon plasma (QGP) using quasiparticle model as the equation of state. In this paper, we extend our model to calculate the anomalous suppression of various states of $Υ$ arising due to QGP medium alone. We obtain the suppression patterns of different bottomonia states with respect to centrality at various available collision energies and comp…
In this study, we systematically investigate deformed Xe-Xe collisions at 5.44 TeV center of mass energy. We exploit the Monte Carlo HYDJET++ model to compute transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) distribution, nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and relative suppression in terms of $R_{CP}$ as a function of transverse momentum and centrality of collision of charged hadrons in body-body and tip-tip geometrical configurations, respectively. We have compared HYDJET++ model results to those from ALICE experimental data and AMPT model (String-Melting version) results. Minimum bias Xe-Xe collisions show a…
Deconfined QCD matter in heavy-ion collisions has been a topic of paramount interest for many years. Quarkonia suppression in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments indicate the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation in such collisions. Recent experiments at LHC has given some indications of hot matter effect in asymmetric p$-$Pb nuclear collisions. Here, we employ a theoretical model to investigate the bottomonium suppression in Pb$-$Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$, $5.02$ TeV, and in p$-$Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV center-of-m…
The role of hadronic matter in the suppression of open heavy flavored mesons has been studied. The heavy-quarks (HQs) suppression factors have been calculated and contrasted with the experimental data obtained from nuclear collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadronic Collider (LHC) experiments. It is found that the suppression in the hadronic phase at RHIC energy is around $20%-25%$ whereas at the LHC it is around $10%-12%$ for the D meson. In case of B meson the hadronic suppression is around $10%-12%$ and $5%-6%$ at RHIC and LHC energies respectively. Present study…
A kinetic equation approach is applied to model anomalous J/psi suppression at RHIC and SPS by absorption in a hadron resonance gas which successfully describes statistical hadron production in both experiments. The puzzling rapidity dependence of the PHENIX data is reproduced as a geometric effect due to a longer absorption path for J/psi production at forward rapidity.
We examine whether it is possible to simultaneously describe the experimental data from RHIC and LHC on nuclear suppression of light hadrons and non-photonic single electrons in the pQCD picture of parton energy loss. We perform calculations accounting for both radiative and collisional energy loss. We show that once the coupling constant is fixed from comparison with data on the nuclear modification factor for light hadrons it gives a satisfactory agreement with data on the electron R_{AA} and azimuthal anisotropy v_2. Our results show that the collisional mechanism is only of marginal signif…
We had been gradually working towards building a comprehensive quarkonia suppression formalism to explain all 3 dependencies of quarkonium suppression obtained from heavy-ion collision experiments. We present here the improved version of quarkonia suppression framework. It assumes bottomonia produced in the early stage which dissociates due to color screening, gluonic dissociation, and collisional damping in addition to the shadowing as an initial state effect. The QGP medium formed in the collisions is assumed to evolve under ($3+1$)-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamics which is mod…
We compare fully perturbative and fully nonperturbative pictures of high-pT energy loss calculations to the first results from LHC. While over-suppressed compared to published ALICE data, parameter-free pQCD predictions based on the WHDG energy loss model constrained to RHIC data simultaneously describe well the preliminary CMS hadron suppression, ATLAS charged hadron v2, and ALICE D meson suppression; we also provide for future reference WHDG predictions for B meson RAA. However, energy loss calculations based on AdS/CFT also qualitatively describe well the RHIC pion and non-photonic electron…
In this paper, our goal is to make a simultaneous analysis of the high- and low-P_T parts of the charged-hadron P_T spectrum measured by the ALICE collaboration in central Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), based on models which have been successfully applied and constrained in Au-Au collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). For the hydrodynamical modeling with which we obtain the low-P_T spectrum, we have computed the initial conditions based on perturbative QCD (pQCD) minijet production and saturation. The sensitivity of the obtained charged-…
The parton and hadron cascade model PACIAE based on PYTHIA was utilized to systematically investigate the strange particle production in pp collisions at the RHIC and LHC energies. Taking the mechanism of reduction of the strange quark suppression into account the STAR and ALICE data of strange particle production in pp collisions are well reproduced. It turned out that the K/π ratio as a function of reaction energy in pp collisions shows slightly increasing from sqrt(s)=0.2 to 0.9 TeV and then turning to saturation.
We present an analysis of data on light flavour hadron production as function of event multiplicity at LHC energies measured by the ALICE collaboration. The strangeness-canonical approach within the framework of the THERMUS statistical hadronisation model is used for a simultaneous description of pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions. The rapidity window dependence of the strangeness correlation volume is addressed and a value of $Δy = 1.33 \pm 0.28$ is found. With the exception of the $ϕ$-meson, an excellent description of the experimental data is found.
Hadron resonance gas models provide a good description of the equation of state of quantum chromodynamics determined by lattice QCD calculations at temperatures $T \sim 100-155$ MeV. In this paper we investigate the effects of an exponentially increasing hadron mass spectrum (Hagedorn spectrum) on the azimuthal anisotropy of the rapidly expanding matter formed in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. If the temperature at which the conversion from fluid degrees of freedom to hadrons is sufficiently close to the Hagedorn temperature, the production of Hagedorn resonances suppresses the differ…
In this work we study the interactions of bottom mesons which lead to $Υ$ production and absorption in hot hadronic matter. We use effective Lagrangians to calculate the $Υ$ production cross section in processes such as $ \bar{B}^{(*)} + B^{(*)} \to Υ+ (π, ρ)$ and also the $Υ$ absorption cross section in the corresponding inverse processes. We update and extend previous calculations by Lin and Ko, introducing anomalous interactions. The obtained cross sections are used as input to solve the rate equation which allows us to follow the time evolution of the $Υ$ multiplicity. In contrast to previ…
We present a global fit to all data on the suppression of high energy jets and high energy hadrons in the most central heavy ion collisions at the LHC for two different collision energies, within a hybrid strong/weak coupling quenching model. Even though the measured suppression factors for hadrons and jets differ significantly from one another and appear to asymptote to different values in the high energy limit, we obtain a simultaneous description of all these data after constraining the value of a single model parameter. We use our model to investigate the origin of the difference between t…
The suppression of high transverse momentum P_T hadron production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion (A-A) collisions as compared to the scaled expectation from proton-proton (p-p) collisions expressed as the nuclear modification factor R_AA is experimentally well established and can be traced back to interactions between the hard parton shower and the soft bulk matter. Physical intuition suggests that the medium modification should cease to be important when the hard scale of parton production is much larger than the typical momentum scale in the medium (e.g. the temperature T) and that consequen…
The production of charmonium in heavy-ion collisions is investigated based on Boltzmann-type transport model for charmonium evolution and langevin equation for charm quark evolution. Charmonium suppression and regeneration in both quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and hadron phase are considered. Charm quarks are far from thermalization, and regeneration of charmonium in QGP and hadron gas is neglectable at SPS and FAIR. At peripheral collisions, charmonium suppression with hadron gas explains the experimental data well. But at central collisions, additional suppression from deconfined matter (QGP) is …
Nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}(p_{T})$ for large transverse momentum pion spectra in $Pb+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV is predicted within the NLO perturbative QCD parton model. Effect of jet quenching is incorporated through medium modified fragmentation functions within the higher-twist approach. The jet transport parameter that controls medium modification is proportional to the initial parton density and the coefficient is fixed by the RHIC data on suppression of large $p_{T}$ hadron spectra. Data on charged hadron multiplicity $dN_{ch}/dη=1584 \pm 80$ in central $Pb+Pb$ colli…
The drag force of charm quarks propagating through a thermalized system of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) has been considered within the framework of both conformal/non-conformal Anti de Sitter (AdS) correspondence. Newly derived Einstein Fluctuation-Dissipation relation has been used to calculate the heavy flavor diffusion coefficients. Using the drag and diffusion coefficients as inputs Langevin equation has been solved to study the heavy flavor suppression factor. It has been shown that within conformal AdS correspondence the D-meson suppression at LHC energy can be reproduced where as the non-co…
The bottomonium states due to their varying binding energies dissolve at different temperatures and thus their nuclear modification factors and relative yields have potential to map the properties of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). We estimate the suppression of bottomonia states due to color screening in an expanding QGP of finite lifetime and size with the conditions relevant for PbPb collisions at LHC. The properties of $Υ$ states and recent results on their dissociation temperatures have been used as ingredient in the study. The nuclear modification factors and the ratios of yields of $Υ$ states…
The suppression of high-pT single-hadron spectra in heavy-ion collisions is usually interpreted as due to parton energy-loss of high-momentum quarks and gluons propagating in the plasma. Here, we discuss to what extent this partonic picture must be complemented by a picture of medium-modified hadronization. In particular, we show how color-exchange with the medium modifies the properties of color singlet-clusters arising from the parton branchings, producing a softening of the hadron spectra.
We show that the recently observed suppression of the yield ratio of deuteron to proton and of helium-3 to proton in p+p collisions compared to those in p+Pb or Pb+Pb collisions by the ALICE Collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can be explained if light nuclei are produced from the coalescence of nucleons at the kinetic freeze-out of these collisions. This suppression is attributed to the non-negligible sizes of deuteron and helium-3 compared to the size of the nucleon emission source in collisions of small systems, which reduces the overlap of their internal wave functions with th…
Nuclear modification factors of single hadrons and dihadrons at large transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are studied in a next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative QCD parton model. Parton fragmentation functions (FFs) in $A+A$ collisions are modified due to jet energy loss which is proportional to the jet transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ characterizing the interaction between the parton jet and the produced medium. By confronting 6 current sets of NLO parton FFs for large $p_{\rm T}$ hadron productions, we extract $\hat{q}$ quantitatively via a global fit to d…

The thermal multihadron production observed in different high energy collisions poses many basic problems: why do even elementary, $e^+e^-$ and hadron-hadron, collisions show thermal behaviour? Why is there in such interactions a suppression of strange particle production? Why does the strangeness suppression almost disappear in relativistic heavy ion collisions? Why in these collisions is the thermalization time less than $\simeq 0.5$ fm/c? We show that the recently proposed mechanism of thermal hadron production through Hawking-Unruh radiation can naturally answer the previous questions. Ind…
We analyze the reliability of several techniques for computing jet and hadron spectra at different collision energies. This is relevant for discovering energy loss in the upcoming oxygen-oxygen (OO) run at the LHC, for which a reference pp run is currently not planned. For hadrons and jets we compute the ratio of spectra between different pp collision energies in perturbative QCD, which can be used to construct a reference spectrum. Alternatively, it can be interpolated from measured spectra at nearby energies. We estimate the precision of both strategies for the spectra ratio relevant to the …

The production length l_p of a leading (large z_h) hadron produced in hadronization of a highly virtual high-p_T parton is short because of the very intensive vacuum gluon radiation and dissipation of energy at the early stage of process. Therefore, the main part of nuclear suppression of high-p_T hadrons produced in heavy ion collisions is related to the survival probability of a colorless dipole propagating through a dense medium. This is subject to color transparency, which leads to a steep rise with p_T of the nuclear ratio R_{AA}(p_T), in good agreement with the recent data from the ALICE…
Studying the pathlength dependence of high P_T hadron suppression in heavy-ion collisions by measuring the dependence of hard hadron production on the angle phi with the reaction plane in non-central collisions has so far been one of the most successful tools in constraining the microscopical picture of leading parton energy loss. With the imminent start of the LHC heavy-ion program and the possibility of full jet reconstruction, the focus has shifted to models which are capable of simulating full in-medium parton showers rather than tracing the leading parton only. Yet, on the level of single…
We show that strangeness suppression in hadronic and nuclear collisions is fully determined by the initial energy density of the collision. The suppression factor $γ_s(s)$, with $\sqrt s$ denoting the collision energy, can be expressed as a universal function of the initial energy density $ε_0(s)$, and the resulting pattern is in excellent agreement with data from $p-p,~p-Pb,~Cu-Cu,~Au-Au$ and $Pb-Pb$ data over a wide range of energies and for different centralities.
Two approaches to treat the chemical freeze-out of strange particles in hadron resonance gas model are analyzed. The first one employs their non-equillibration via the usual γ_s factor and such a model describes the hadron multiplicities measured in nucleus-nucleus collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies with χ^2/dof = 1.15. Surprisingly, at low energies we find not the strangeness suppression, but its enhancement. Also we suggest an alternative approach to treat the strange particle freeze-out separately, but with the full chemical equilibration. This approach is based on the conservation la…
