(Abridged). We present a sample of 1716 galaxies with companions within Delta v < 500 km/s, r_p < 80 kpc and stellar mass ratio 0.1 < M_1/M_2 < 10 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 4 (DR4). In agreement with previous studies, we find an enhancement in the star formation rate (SFR) of galaxy pairs at projected separations < 30--40 kpc. In addition, we find that this enhancement is highest (and extends to the greatest separations) for galaxies of approximately equal mass, the so-called `major' pairs. However, SFR enhancement can still be detected for a sample of galaxy pairs whose masses are within a factor of 10 of each other. In agreement with the one previous study of the luminosity-metallicity (LZ) relation in paired galaxies, we find an offset to lower metallicities (by ~ 0.1 dex) for a given luminosity for galaxies in pairs compared to the control sample. We also present the first mass-metallicity (MZ) relation comparison between paired galaxies and the field, and again find an offset to lower metallicities (by ~ 0.05 dex) for a given mass. The smaller offset in the MZ relation indicates that both higher luminosities and lower metallicities may contribute to the shift of pairs relative to the control in the LZ relation. We show that the offset in the LZ relation depends on galaxy half light radius, r_h. Galaxies with r_h < 3 kpc and with a close companion show a 0.05-0.1 dex downwards offset in metallicity compared to control galaxies of the same size. Finally, we study the AGN fraction in both the pair and control sample and find that whilst selecting galaxies in different cuts of color and asymmetry yields different AGN fractions, the fraction for pairs and the control sample are consistent for a given set of selection criteria.
We evaluated new colour-transformations for the Sloan photometry by 224 standards and used them to revise both the equations for photometric parallax estimation and metallicity calibration cited by Karaali et al. (2003). This process improves the metallicity and absolute magnitude estimations by [Fe/H]<=0.3 dex and M^{H}_{g} <= 0.1 mag respectively. There is a high correlation for metallicities and absolute magnitudes derived for two systems, UBV and Sloan, by means of the revised calibrations.
We use a large sample of 174 Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to study whether and how the slope of the stellar initial mass function depends on metallicity. We calculate for each object its oxygen abundance according to which we divide our sample into four metallicity subsamples. For each subsample, we then measure three quantities: the equivalent width of \hb emission line, the equivalent width of WR bump around 4650Å, and the WR bump-to-\hb intensity ratio, and compare to the predictions of the same quantities by evolutionary synthesis models of Schaerer & Va…
Current X-ray observatories, archival X-ray data, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) represent a powerful combination for addressing key questions about active galactic nuclei (AGN). We describe a few selected issues at the forefront of X-ray AGN research and the relevance of the SDSS to them. Bulk X-ray/SDSS AGN investigations, X-ray weak AGN, red AGN, hard X-ray selected AGN, high-redshift AGN demography, and future prospects are all briefly discussed.
The ``AGN Physics with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey'' conference was held at Princeton University in July 2003 to bring together groups working inside and outside of the SDSS collaboration at radio through X-ray wavelengths to discuss the common goal of better understanding the physics of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Although we still do not have a full understanding of AGN, much progress has been made in recent years. In this conference summary, we concentrate on those topics discussed at the meeting where we believe that there has been significant change or where there is a new standard of …
We have conducted a systematic search of AGNs with IMBHs from the SDSS DR4. As results we found 245 candidates of broad-line AGN with M_{BH}<10^6 \Msun estimated from the luminosity and width of the broad Halpha component. Compared to the pioneer Greene & Ho (2004) sample of 19 IMBH AGNs, our sample has improved in covering a larger range of the Eddington ratio, as well as black hole mass and redshift, taking the advantage of our AGN-galaxy spectral decomposition algorithm. Among these, thirty-six have L_{bol}/L_{Edd} < 0.1, hinting that a significant fraction of IMBHs might exist with weak or…
We present the two--point correlation function (2PCF) of narrow-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected within the First Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using a sample of 13605 AGN in the redshift range 0.055 < z < 0.2, we find that the AGN auto--correlation function is consistent with the observed galaxy auto--correlation function on scales 0.2h^{-1}Mpc to >100h^{-1}Mpc. The AGN hosts trace an intermediate population of galaxies and are not detected in either the bluest (youngest) disk--dominated galaxies or many of the reddest (oldest) galaxies. We show that the AGN 2PCF is …
We present two samples of $\hii$ galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic observations data release 3. The electron temperatures($T_e$) of 225 galaxies are calculated with the photoionized $\hii$ model and $T_e$ of 3997 galaxies are calculated with an empirical method. The oxygen abundances from the $T_e$ methods of the two samples are determined reliably. The oxygen abundances from a strong line metallicity indicator, such as $R_{23}$, $P$, $N2$, and $O3N2$, are also calculated. We compared oxygen abundances of $\hii$ galaxies obtained with the $T_e$ method, $R_{23}$ me…
We have derived element abundances in 310 emission-line galaxies from the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) for which the [O {\sc iii}] 4363 emission line was detected, allowing abundance determination by direct methods. We found no extremely metal-deficient galaxy (Z<Zsun/12), probably as a consequence of selection effects in the SDSS sample. The oxygen abundance 12 + log O/H of the SDSS galaxies sample lies in the range from ~7.6 (Zsun/12) to ~8.4 (Zsun/2). This sample is merged with a sample of ~100 blue compact dwarf galaxies with high quality spectra containing som…
We present the observed fraction of galaxies with an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) as a function of environment in the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using 4921 galaxies between 0.05 <= z <= 0.095, and brighter than M_r* = -20.0 (or M* +1.45), we find at least ~ 20% of these galaxies possess an unambiguous detection of an AGN, but this fraction could be as high as ~40% after we model the ambiguous emission line galaxies in our sample. We have studied the environmental dependence of galaxies using the the distance to the 10^th nearest neighbor. As expected, we observ…
Type II quasars are luminous AGNs whose central engines and broad-line regions are obscured by intervening material; such objects only recently have been discovered in appreciable numbers. We study the multiwavelength properties of 291 type II AGN candidates (0.3 < z < 0.8) selected based on their optical emission line properties from the spectroscopic database of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This sample includes about 150 objects luminous enough to be classified as type II quasars. We matched the sample to the FIRST (20 cm), IRAS (12-100 micron), 2MASS (JHK_S) and RASS (0.1-2.4 keV) surveys.…
We correlate the positions of 13,240 Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) with 0.1 <= z <= 0.3 from the maxBCG catalog with radio sources from the FIRST survey to study the sizes and distributions of radio AGN in galaxy clusters. We find that 19.7% of our BCGs are associated with FIRST sources, and this fraction depends on the stellar mass of the BCG, and to a lesser extent on the richness of the parent cluster (in the sense of increasing radio loudness with increasing mass). The intrinsic size of the radio emission associated with the BCGs peaks at 55 kpc, with a tail extending to 200 kpc. The r…
We have compared the optical emission line ratios of type 2 quasars from Zakamska et al. with standard AGN photoionization model predictions, Seyfert 2s, HII galaxies, and narrow line FRII radio galaxies. Moderate to high ionization narrow line radio galaxies and Seyfert 2s are indistinguishable from type 2 quasars based on their optical line ratios. The standard AGN photoionization models, widely discussed for other type 2 AGNs, can reproduce successfully the loci and trends of type 2 quasars in some of the main diagnostic diagrams. These models are not exempt of problems and the discrepancie…
We consider the techniques to distinguish normal star forming (NSF) galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosts using optical spectra. The observational data base is a set of 20000 galaxies extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, for which we have determined the emission line intensities after subtracting the stellar continuum obtained from spectral synthesis. Our analysis is based on photoionization models computed using the stellar ionizing radiation predicted by Starburst 99 and, for the AGNs, a broken power-law spectrum. We explain why, among the four classical emission line diagn…
We investigate faint radio emission from low- to high-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Their radio properties are inferred by co-adding large ensembles of radio image cut-outs from the FIRST survey, as almost all of the sources are individually undetected. We correlate the median radio flux densities against a range of other sample properties, including median values for redshift, [OIII] luminosity, emission line ratios, and the strength of the 4000A break. We detect a strong trend for sources that are actively undergoing star-formation…
We have compiled a large sample of low-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGN) identified via their emission line characteristics from the spectroscopic data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Since emission lines are often contaminated by stellar absorption lines, we developed an objective and efficient method of subtracting the stellar continuum from every galaxy spectrum before making emission line measurements. The distribution of the measured H$α$ Full Width at Half Maxima values of emission line galaxies is strongly bimodal, with two populations separated at about 1,200km s$^{-1}$. This feat…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has discovered a z=2.4917 radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) with a luminous, variable, low-polarization UV continuum, H I two-photon emission, and a moderately broad Lyman-alpha line (FWHM = 1430 km/s) but without obvious metal-line emission. SDSS J113658.36+024220.1 does have associated metal-line absorption in three distinct, narrow systems spanning a velocity range of 2710 km/s. Despite certain spectral similarities, SDSS J1136+0242 is not a Lyman-break galaxy. Instead, the Ly-alpha and two-photon emission can be attributed to an extended, low-metallicity…
Current emission-line based estimates of the metallicity of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at both high and low redshifts indicate that AGN have predominantly solar to supersolar metallicities. This leads to the question: do low metallicity AGN exist? In this paper we use photoionization models to examine the effects of metallicity variations on the narrow emission lines from an AGN. We explore a variety of emission-line diagnostics that are useful for identifying AGN with low metallicity gas. We find that line ratios involving [NII] are the most robust metallicity indicators in galaxies where t…
We describe further results of a program aimed to yield ~10^4 fully characterized optical identifications of ROSAT X-ray sources. Our program employs X-ray data from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), and both optical imaging and spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). RASS/SDSS data from 5740 deg^2 of sky spectroscopically covered in SDSS Data Release 5 (DR5) provide an expanded catalog of 7000 confirmed quasars and other AGN that are probable RASS identifications. Again in our expanded catalog, the identifications as X-ray sources are statistically secure, with only a few …
Under the unified model for active galactic nuclei (AGNs), narrow-line (Type 2) AGNs are, in fact, broad-line (Type 1) AGNs but each with a heavily obscured accretion disk. We would therefore expect the optical continuum emission from Type 2 AGN to be composed mainly of stellar light and non-variable on the time-scales of months to years. In this work we probe the spectroscopic variability of galaxies and narrow-line AGNs using the multi-epoch data in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 6. The sample contains 18,435 sources for which there exist pairs of spectroscopic observations…
We have re-evaluated empirical expressions for the abundance determination of N, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar and Fe taking into account the latest atomic data and constructing an appropriate grid of photoionization models with state-of-the art model atmospheres. Using these expressions we have derived heavy element abundances in the $\sim$ 310 emission-line galaxies from the Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)with an observed Hbeta flux F(Hbeta)> 1E-14 erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} and for which the [O III] 4363 emission line was detected at least at a 2sigma level, allowing abundance determinatio…
We explore how the local environment is related to the redshift, type, and luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Recent simulations and observations are converging on the view that the extreme luminosity of quasars is fueled in major mergers of gas-rich galaxies. In such a picture, quasars are expected to be located in regions with a higher density of galaxies on small scales where mergers are more likely to take place. However, in this picture, the activity observed in low-luminosity AGN is due to secular processes that are less dependent on the local galaxy density. To test this hypoth…
We apply the stellar population synthesis code by Cid Fernandes et al. to model the stellar contribution for a sample of 209 type II AGNs at $0.3<z<0.83$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The reliable stellar velocity dispersions ($σ_{*}$) are obtained for 33 type II AGNs with significant stellar absorption features. According to the $L_{\rm [O III]}$ criterion of $3\times 10^{8} \Lsolar$, 20 of which can be classified as type II quasars. We use the formula of Greene & Ho to obtain the corrected stellar velocity dispersions ($σ_{*}^c$). We also calculate the supermassive black holes masses fr…
Using a sample of the $Spitzer$ SWIRE-field galaxies whose optical spectra are taken from the Data Release 4 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we study possible correlations between the Mid-InfraRed (MIR) dust emission from these galaxies and both their metallicities and AGN activities. We find that both metallicity and AGN activity are well correlated with the following ratios: PAH(Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon)-to-star, VSG(Very Small Grain)-to-star and PAH-to-VSG, which can be characterized by $νL_ν[8μm({\rm dust})]/νL_ν[3.6μm]$, $νL_ν[24μm]/νL_ν[3.6μm]$, and$νL_ν[8μm({\rm dust})]/νL_ν[24μ…
We present template spectra of low-mass (M0-L0) dwarfs derived from over 4,000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra. These composite spectra are suitable for use as medium-resolution (R ~ 1,800) radial velocity standards. We report mean spectral properties (molecular bandhead strengths, equivalent widths) and use the templates to investigate the effects of magnetic activity and metallicity on the spectroscopic and photometric properties of low-mass stars.
A sample of 2712 radio-luminous galaxies is defined from the second data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) by cross-comparing the main spectroscopic galaxy sample with two radio surveys: the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimetres (FIRST) survey. The comparison is carried out in a multi-stage process and makes optimal use of both radio surveys by exploiting the sensitivity of the NVSS to extended and multi-component radio sources in addition to the high angular resolution of the FIRST images. A radio source sample with 95% completenes…
Many open questions in X-ray astronomy are limited by the relatively small number of objects in uniform optically-identified samples, especially when rare subclasses are considered, or subsets isolated to search for evolution or correlations between wavebands. We describe initial results of a program aimed to ultimately yield 10^4 X-ray source identifications--a sample about an order of magnitude larger than earlier efforts. The technique employs X-ray data from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), and optical imaging and spectroscopic followup from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Optical obj…
The well known relationship between metallicity and luminosity in AGN is addressed by introducing new metallicity measurements (based on the method of Hamann & Ferland 1993; HF93) for a sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies. Our new results, based on a sample of 162 AGN, including 9 NLS1s, indicate that, while broad-line AGN trace a metallicity--luminosity power law with an index of ~0.2, NLS1s deviate significantly from this relationship at low luminosities. Adopting the HF93 method based on the N V/C IV line ratio, we find that NLS1 metallicities are similar to those of some high-r…
We present Washington photometry of a field central to the Bootes I dwarf spheroidal galaxy, which was discovered as a stellar overdensity in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (DR5). We show that the Washington filters are much more effective than the Sloan filters in separating the metal-poor turn-off stars in the dwarf galaxy from the foreground stars. We detect 165 objects in the field, and statistically determine that just over 40% of the objects are non-members. Our statistical analysis mostly agrees with radial velocity measurements of the brighter stars. We find that that there is a distinct…
We present observations at 250 GHz (1.2 mm), 43 GHz, and 1.4 GHz of a sample of 41 QSOs at z > 3.7 found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We detect 16 sources with a 250 GHz flux density greater than 1.4 mJy. The combination of centimeter and millimeter wavelength observations indicates that the 250 GHz emission is most likely thermal dust emission. Assuming a dust temperature of 50 K, the implied dust masses for the 16 detected sources are in the range 1.5e8 to 5.9e8 Msun, and the dust emitting regions are likely to be larger than 1 kpc in extent. The radio-through-optical spectral energy dis…
The emission line luminosity function of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is measured from about 3000 AGN included in the main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey within a redshift range of $0<z<0.15$. The $\Ha$ and [OIII]$λ5007$ luminosity functions for Seyferts cover luminosity range of $10^{5-9}$$L_\odot$ in H$α$ and the shapes are well fit by broken power laws, without a turnover at fainter nuclear luminosities. Assuming a universal conversion from emission line strength to continuum luminosity, the inferred B band magnitude luminosity function is comparable both to the AGN luminosit…
We use a sample of 43,690 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 to study the systematic effects of specific star formation rate (SSFR) and galaxy size (as measured by the half light radius, r_h) on the mass-metallicity relation. We find that galaxies with high SSFR or large r_h for their stellar mass have systematically lower gas phase-metallicities (by up to 0.2 dex) than galaxies with low SSFR or small r_h. We discuss possible origins for these dependencies, including galactic winds/outflows, abundance gradients, environment and star formation rate efficiencies.
We report on the distribution of metallicities, [Fe/H], for very metal-poor stars in the halo of the Galaxy. Although the primary information on the nature of the Metallicity Distribution Function (MDF) is obtained from the two major recent surveys for metal-poor stars, the HK survey of Beers and collaborators, and the Hamburg/ESO Survey of Christlieb and collaborators, we also discuss the MDF derived from the publicly available database of stellar spectra and photometry contained in the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR-3). Even though the SDSS was not originally pla…
In order to contribute to the general effort aiming at the improvement of our knowledge about the physical conditions within the Broad Line Region (BLR) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), here we present the results achieved by our analysis of the spectral properties of a sample of 90 broad line emitting sources, collected at the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database. By focusing our attention mainly onto the Balmer series of hydrogen emission lines, which is the dominant feature in the optical wavelength range of many BLR spectra, we extracted several flux and profile measurements, which we …
We have compiled a sample of 21 low redshift (z < 0.3), luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) with large Balmer decrements (Halpha/Hbeta > 7) using the galaxy and QSO catalogs of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release. Using this sample we attempt to determine the fraction of quasars with large internal absorption. We find that these AGN have Strong [O III] and broad Halpha emission, and that starlight dominates the spectra in the blue band, suggesting that these objects are heavily reddened. Their narrow emission line ratios are similar to those of Seyfert 2 galaxies, yet the average…
The determination of the bulk metallicity and the abundance mixture of various elements is very difficult in quasars and AGNs because only a few lines are observed and the ionization correction is unknown. Most abundance studies of AGNs assume the N/C ratio scales as metallicity (nitrogen goes as metallicity squared) and so serves as a metallicity indicator. We present an accurate metallicity determination of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Markarian 1044, using O VI column density measurements from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) together with C IV, N V, and H I from…
We present short \chandra observations of twelve bright (i<18) z_em~1.5 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey chosen to have significantly redder optical colors than most quasars at the same redshift. Of the five quasars with optical properties most consistent with dust reddening at the quasar redshift, four show indirect evidence of moderate X-ray absorption (inferred N_H~10^22 cm^-2) with a dust-to-gas ratio <1% of the SMC value. The remaining seven objects show no evidence for even moderate intrinsic X-ray absorption. Thus, while optically red quasars are marginally more likely to show …
Type II quasars are the long-sought luminous analogs of type II (narrow emission line) Seyfert galaxies, suggested by unification models of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and postulated to account for an appreciable fraction of the cosmic hard X-ray background. We present a sample of 291 type II AGN at redshifts 0.3<Z<0.83 from the spectroscopic data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These objects have narrow (FWHM<2000 km/s), high equivalent width emission lines with high-ionization line ratios. We describe the selection procedure and discuss the optical properties of the sample. About 50% of th…
We have carried out a search for Wolf-Rayet galaxies in all galaxies with EW(Hb)>2AA in the SDSS DR6. We identify Wolf-Rayet features using a mixture of automatic and visual classification and find a total of 570 galaxies with significant Wolf-Rayet (WR) features and a further 1115 potential candidates, several times more than even the largest heterogeneously assembled catalogues. We discuss in detail the properties of galaxies showing Wolf-Rayet features with a focus on their empirical properties. We are able to accurately quantify the incidence of Wolf-Rayet galaxies with redshift and show t…
We present spectra of a large sample of low-metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxies which exhibit broad components in their strong emission lines, mainly in Hbeta, [O III]4959, 5007 and Halpha. Twenty-three spectra have been obtained with the MMT, 14 of which show broad emission. The remaining 21 spectra with broad emission have been selected from the Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The most plausible origin of broad line emission is the evolution of massive stars and their interaction with the circumstellar and interstellar medium. The broad emission with the lowest H$α$ lumin…
We perform population synthesis modelling of a magnitude-limited sample of 4391 Luminous Red Galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4). We fit measured spectral indices using a large library of high resolution spectra, covering a wide range of metallicities and assuming an exponentially decaying star-formation rate punctuated by bursts, to obtain median-likelihood estimates for the light-weighted age, metallicity, stellar mass and extinction for the galaxies. The ages lie in the range 4-10 Gyr, peaking near 6 Gyr, with metallicities in the range -0.4<[Z/H]<0…
The Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) contains 150 Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, most of them previously unknown. We present here the study of the X-ray emission from two of these active galaxies (SDSS J030639.57+000343.2 and SDSS J141519.50-003021.6), based upon XMM-Newton observations. The spectral and timing characteristics of the two sources are presented and compared against the typical properties of known NLS1 galaxies. We found that these two NLS1 are within the dispersion range of the typical values of this class of AGN, although with some interesting f…
Using a sample of 57,377 star-forming galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we study the relationship between gas-phase oxygen abundance and environment in the local Universe. We find that there is a strong relationship between metallicity and environment such that more metal-rich galaxies favor regions of higher overdensity. Furthermore, this metallicity-density relation is comparable in strength to the color-density relation along the blue cloud. After removing the mean dependence of environment on color and luminosity, we find a significant residual trend between metallicity and…
The [O II] 3727 emission line is often used as an indicator of star formation rate in extragalactic surveys, and it can be an equally effective tracer of star formation in systems containing luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In order to investigate the ongoing star formation rate of the host galaxies of AGNs, we measured the strength of [O II] and other optical emission lines from a large sample (~ 3600) of broad-line (Type 1) AGNs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We performed a set of photoionization calculations to help evaluate the relative contribution of stellar and nonst…
We describe the algorithm for selecting quasar candidates for optical spectroscopy in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Quasar candidates are selected via their non-stellar colors in "ugriz" broad-band photometry, and by matching unresolved sources to the FIRST radio catalogs. The automated algorithm is sensitive to quasars at all redshifts lower than z=5.8. Extended sources are also targeted as low-redshift quasar candidates in order to investigate the evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at the faint end of the luminosity function. Nearly 95% of previously known quasars are recovered (based…
(Abridged) We perform an analysis of spectra and photometry for 22,770 stars included in the third data release (DR3) of the SDSS. We measure radial velocities and, based on a model-atmosphere analysis, derive estimates ofthe atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and [Fe/H]) for each star. Stellar evolution models are then used to estimate distances. The SDSS sample covers a range in stellar brightness of 14 < V < 22, and comprises large numbers of F- and G-type stars from the thick-disk and halo populations (up to 100 kpc from the galactic plane), therefore including…
Recently, Zakamska et al. (2003) selected 291 high-ionization narrow emission-line AGN in the redshift range 0.3-0.83 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic data. The sample includes both Seyfert II galaxies and their higher luminosity "cousins", Type II quasar candidates. Here we present the results on the X-ray properties of 17 of these objects for which archival X-ray data (ROSAT and XMM-Newton) are available. Three sources have been significantly (>6 sigma) detected, one being the most radio-loud source of the sample; its X-ray emission, possibly enhanced by jet emission, is consi…
We present a mid-infrared analysis of 35 quasars with spectroscopic redshifts selected from the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic Survey (SWIRE). We discuss their optical and mid-infrared (MIR) colors, and show that these quasars occupy well defined regions in MIR color-color space. We examine the issue of type-I AGN candidate selection in detail and propose new selection methods based on mid-IR colors. The available multi-band data allows us to construct two new, well-sampled quasar templates, covering wavelengths from the ultraviolet to the MIR.
We present new near infrared spectroscopic measurements of the H_beta region for a sample of 29 luminous high redshift quasars. We have measured the width of H_beta in those sources, and added archival H_beta width measurements, to create a sample of 92 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for which H_beta width and rest-frame UV measurements of N V λ1240 and C IV λ1549 emission-lines are available. Our sample spans six orders of magnitude in luminosity and includes 31 radio-loud AGNs. It also includes 10 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies and one broad absorption-line quasar. We find that metallicity, i…
We present results on over 100 high-redshift quasars found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), using automated selection algorithms applied to SDSS imaging data and with spectroscopic confirmation obtained during routine spectroscopic operations of the Sloan 2.5-m telescope. The SDSS spectra cover the wavelength range 3900--9200 Angstroms at a spectral resolution of 1800, and have been obtained for 116 quasars with redshifts greater than 3.94; 92 of these objects were previously uncataloged, significantly increasing the current tally of published z>4 quasars. The paper also reports observa…
Recent X-ray surveys with Chandra and XMM-Newton have found several genuine Type II quasars, the long sought-after population of high-luminosity (high-redshift) Seyfert 2 galaxies, and a sizable number of Type II quasar candidates. However, at present it is hard to know whether the on-going X-ray surveys are providing a reliable and nearly complete census of the Type II quasar population. In order to address this open issue and shed light on the broad-band properties of Type II quasars, we used the sample of 291 high-ionization narrow emission-line AGN at z=0.3-0.83 selected from the Sloan Dig…
For a sample of 25 dwarf irregular galaxies with distances D < 5 Mpc and measured oxygen abundances, we present results derived from stellar masses and galaxy luminosities from near-infrared imaging with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We have constructed the appropriate luminosity-metallicity (L-Z) and mass-metallicity (M-Z) relations, and compared these relations with their corresponding relations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We obtain the following results. 1. The dispersion in the near-infrared L-Z relation is reduced with respect to the dispersion in the optical L-Z rela…
We study the evolution of 82302 star-forming (SF) galaxies from the SDSS. Our main goals are to explore new ways of handling star formation histories (SFH) obtained with our publicly available spectral synthesis code STARLIGHT, and apply them to investigate how SFHs vary as a function of nebular metallicity (Zneb). Our main results are: (1) A conventional correlation analysis shows how global properties such as luminosity, mass, dust content, mean stellar metallicity and mean stellar age relate to Zneb. (2) We present a simple formalism which compresses the results of the synthesis into time-d…
We report on efforts to identify large samples of very and extremely metal-poor stars based on medium-resolution spectroscopy and ugriz photometry obtained during the course of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and its extension, SDSS-II, which includes the program SEGUE: Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration. To date, over 8000 stars with [Fe/H] <= -2.0 and effective temperatures in the range 4500K < T_eff < 7000K have been found, with the expected numbers in this temperature range to be well over 10,000 once SEGUE is completed. The numbers roughly double when one incl…
We have derived the oxygen abundance for a sample of nearby galaxies in the Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) which possess at least two independent spectra of one or several HII regions with a detected [OIII]4363 auroral line. Since, for nearby galaxies, the [OII]3727 nebular line is out of the observed wavelength range, we propose a method to derive (O/H)_ff abundances using the classic Te method coupled with the ff relation. (O/H)_7325 abundances have also been determined, based on the [OII]7320,7330 line intensities, and using a small modification of the standard Te met…
We use the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) to study the soft X-ray properties of a homogeneous sample of 46,420 quasars selected from the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Optical luminosities, both at rest-frame 2500Å($L_{2500}$) and in [OIII] ($L_{[\rm{OIII}]}$) span more than three orders of magnitude, while redshifts range over $0.1<z<5.4$. We detect 3366 quasars directly in the observed 0.1--2.4 keV band. Sub-samples of radio-loud and radio-quiet objects (RLQs and RQQs) are obtained by cross-matching with the FIRST catalogue. We study the distribution of X-ray luminos…
Evolution of galaxies through cosmic time has been widely studied at high redshift, but there are a few studies in this field at lower redshifts. However, low-redshifts studies will provide important clues to the evolution of galaxies, furnishing the required link between local and high-redshift universe. In this work we focus on the metallicity of the gas in spiral galaxies at low redshift looking for signs of chemical evolution. We analyze the metallicity contents of star forming galaxies of similar luminosities at different redshifts, we studied the metallicity of star forming galaxies from…
