Using homogeneous CCD photometric data from the 105-cm Kiso Schmidt telescope covering a 50' x 50' field, we study the mass functions (MFs) of nine open clusters. The ages and Galactocentric distances of the target clusters vary from 16 - 2000 Myr and 9-10.8 kpc, respectively. The values of MF slopes vary from -1.1 to -2.1. The classical value derived by Salpeter (1955) for the slope of the IMF is Γ= -1.35. The MFs in the outer regions of the clusters are found to be steeper than in the inner regions, indicating the presence of mass segregation in the clusters. The MF slopes (in the outer region as well as the whole cluster) undergo an exponential decay with the evolutionary parameter τ(= age/ relaxation time). It seems that the evaporation of low-mass members from outer regions of the clusters is not significant at larger Galactocentric distances. It is concluded that the initial mass function (IMF) in the anticentre direction of the Galaxy might have been steeper than the IMF in the opposite direction. A comparison of the observed CMDs of the clusters with synthetic CMDs gives a photometric binary content of ~40%.
We have studied the photometric variability of ten SMC Be/X-ray pulsars using MACHO and OGLE-II data. For some of these systems we have found periodic behavior, including orbital outbursts and/or nonradial pulsations (NRP) of the Be star. For others we were unable to identify any clear photometric periodicity, although their longterm light curves show significant structure. We present periodograms, phase dispersion minimization (PDM) variances, and folded light curves for the systems which exhibit periodic photometric variability.
The new photometric space-borne survey missions CoRoT and Kepler will be able to detect minute flux variations in binary stars due to relativistic beaming caused by the line-of-sight motion of their components. In all but very short period binaries (P>10d), these variations will dominate over the ellipsoidal and reflection periodic variability. Thus, CoRoT and Kepler will discover a new observational class: photometric beaming binary stars. We examine this new category and the information that the photometric variations can provide. The variations that result from the observatory heliocentric …
The HST/ACS Survey of Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) is a HST Treasury project aimed at obtaining high precision photometry in a large sample of globular clusters. The homogeneous photometric catalogs that has been obtained from these data by Anderson et al. (2008) represents a golden mine for a lot of astrophysical studies. In this paper we used the catalog to analyse the properties of MS-MS binary systems from a sample of fifty GGCs. We measured the fraction of binaries (divided in different groups), studied their radial distribution and constrained the mass ratio distribution. We investi…
We present time-series photometry of nine cataclysmic variables: EI UMa, V844Her, V751 Cyg, V516 Cyg, GZ Cnc, TY Psc, V1315 Aql, ASAS J002511+1217.12, V1315 Aql and LN UMa. The observations were conducted at various observatories, covering 170 hours and comprising 7,850 data points in total. For the majority of targets we confirm previously reported periodicities and for some of them we give, for the first time, their spectroscopic orbital periods. For those dwarf-nova systems which we observed during both quiescence and outburst, the increase in brightness was followed by a decrease in the am…
Detached eclipsing binary stars provide a robust one-step distance determination to nearby galaxies. As a by-product of Galactic microlensing searches, catalogs of thousands of variable stars including eclipsing binaries have been produced by the OGLE, MACHO and EROS collaborations. We present photometric solutions for detached eclipsing binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) discovered by the OGLE collaboration. The solutions were obtained with an automated version of the Wilson-Devinney program. By fitting mock catalogs of eclipsing binaries we find that the normalized stellar radii (p…
We study photometric variability among the optical counterparts of X-ray sources in the old open cluster M67. The two puzzling binaries below the giant branch are both variables: for S1113 the photometric period is compatible with the orbital period, S1063 either varies on a period longer than the orbital period, or does not vary periodically. For the spectroscopic binaries S999, S1070 and S1077 the photometric and orbital periods are similar. Another new periodic variable is the main-sequence star S1112, not known to be a binary. An increase of the photometric period in the WUMa system S1282 …
We observed a large sample of B & Be stars in the Magellanic Clouds, respectively 176 and 344 stars, with the multi-object spectrograph GIRAFFE at ESO/VLT. We obtained spectra at different settings at various epochs. It allowed us to discover several spectroscopic binaries with short and intermediate periods. By cross-correlation in coordinates with the MACHO database, we found the light-curves for 350 stars in our samples. Among them, 19 (14 new) are photometric binaries (5 in the LMC, 14 in the SMC). Among these 19 photometric binaries 6 are also spectroscopic binaries (5 in the LMC, 1 in th…
Published measurements of distances to detached eclipsing binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud combine stellar surface areas (in absolute units) determined from photometric light and radial velocity curves with surface brightnesses from model atmospheres and observed spectra. The method does not require the stars to be normal or undistorted, and is not limited in its applicability to the well detached systems that have traditionally been considered. With this in mind we carry out semi-detached light curve solutions for SMC binaries discovered by the OGLE collaboration, identify candidates fo…
Use of the highly sensitive Hokupa'a/Gemini curvature wavefront sensor has allowed direct adaptive optics (AO) guiding on very low mass (VLM) stars with SpT=M8.0-L0.5. A survey of 39 such objects detected 9 VLM binaries. Most of these systems are tight (separation <5 AU) and have similar masses (Delta Ks<0.8 mag; 0.85<q<1.0). We find a sensitivity corrected binary fraction in the range 15+/-7% for M8.0-L0.5 stars with separations >2.6 AU. This is slightly less than the 32+/-9% measured for more massive M0-M4 dwarfs over the same separation range (Fischer & Marcy 1992). It appears M8.0-L0.5 bin…
The light-time effect method, its limitations and applications were studied. A powerful combined method of simultaneous analysis of the O-C diagrams and astrometric orbit in triple eclipsing-astrometric binaries was presented. Eleven eclipsing systems were studied in detail according to their O-C diagrams (RY Aqr, BF CMi, RW Cap, TY Cap, SS Cet, RR Dra, TY Del, TZ Eri, RV Per, UZ Sge, and BO Vul). The introduced method for studying the astrometric-eclipsing binaries was applied to QS Aql, VW Cep, Zeta Phe, V505 Sgr, HT Vir, and V2388 Oph. The algorithm for such an analysis was introduced and t…
We report on our survey for rapid (time scale of minutes) photometric variability in symbiotic binaries. These binaries are becoming an increasingly important place to study accretion onto white dwarfs since they are candidate Type Ia supernovae progenitors. Unlike in most cataclysmic variables, the white dwarfs in symbiotics typically accrete from a wind, at rates greater than or equal to 10^{-9} solar masses per year. In order to elucidate the differences between symbiotics and other white dwarf accretors, as well as search for magnetism in symbiotic white dwarfs, we have studied 35 primaril…
We present new accurate CCD uvby light curves for the LMC eclipsing binaries HV982 and HV12578, and for the SMC systems HV1433 and HV11284 obtained at the Danish 1.5m telescope at ESO, La Silla. The light curves were derived from DoPHOT photometry, and typical accuracies are between 0.007 and 0.012 mag per point. Standard uvby indices have also been established for each binary, primarily for determination of interstellar reddening and absorption. For HV982 and HV12578, accurate photometric elements have been established. Both systems consist of two detached components of comparable sizes in an…
Double-lined spectroscopic binaries which are also eclipsing provide the most accurate stellar data, and are consequently of first importance to improve stellar evolution modelling. While the mass and radius of each component of detached eclipsing binaries (EBs) can be accurately known, their temperature Teff and chemical composition ([Fe/H]) are still uncertain. To contribute to overcome these difficulties, we present metallicity-dependent Teff determinations of 11 EBs (22 individual stars) from Stromgren synthetic photometry. Inconsistencies suggesting new photometric observations are discus…
The Pisgah Survey, located at the facilities of the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute in Rosman NC, is a low cost project to acquire fully-automated I band photometry of selected areas of the sky. The survey collects multiple images of about 16.5 sq. deg. of sky per night, searching for variability in stars with apparent magnitudes brighter than I = 15. The main scientific goal of this project is to discover new low-mass detached eclipsing binaries to provide precise constraints to the mass-radius relation for the lower main sequence. In this paper we present a technical description of th…
(abridged) INTEGRAL has discovered large numbers of new hard X-ray sources, many of which are believed to be high mass X-ray binaries. However, for a significant fraction, their counterparts remain unidentified. We explore the use of photometric catalogues to find optical counterparts to high mass X-ray binaries. Candidates were selected from 2MASS photometry by means of a reddening free Q parameter. Sufficiently bright candidates were spectroscopically observed. Many of the candidates selected turned out to be moderately reddened late A or early F stars, but our method is able to identify the…
Coravel observations of 103 F5-K0 stars in the Praesepe cluster yielded 24 spectroscopic binaries (3 are non-members), and 20 orbits were determined, with periods from 4 to 7400 days. Based on a complete sample in the colour range 0.40 < B-V < 0.80 (80 stars, including KW 244 = TX Cnc), the companion star fraction CSF = 0.45. The percentage of spectroscopic binaries with P < 1000d is 20% (16/80). The combined photometric and spectroscopic analysis showed that 12 among 18 single-lined spectroscopic binaries are located within the "single" star sequence in the (V,B-V) diagram and cannot be detec…
Interstellar and atmospheric extinctions redden the observational photometric data and they should be handled rigorously. This paper simulates the effect of reddening for the modest case of two main sequence T1 = 6500K and T2 = 5500K components of a detached eclipsing binary system. It is shown that simply subtracting a constant from measured magnitudes (the approach often used in the field of eclipsing binaries) to account for reddening should be avoided. Simplified treatment of the reddening introduces systematics that reaches \~0.01mag for the simulated case, but can be as high as ~0.2mag f…
We present the results of a photometric multisite campaign on the $δ$ Scuti Pre-Main-Sequence star IP Per. Nine telescopes have been involved in the observations, with a total of about 190 hours of observations over 38 nights. Present data confirms the multiperiodic nature of this star and leads to the identification of at least nine pulsational frequencies. Comparison with the predictions of linear non-adiabatic radial pulsation models allowed us to identify only five of the nine observed frequencies, and to constrain the position of IP Per in the HR diagram. The latter is in good agreement w…
The orbits and physical parameters of three detached F and G-type eclipsing binaries have been derived combining Hipparcos H(P) photometry with 8480-8740 Ang ground-based spectroscopy, simulating the photometric+spectroscopic observations that the GAIA mission will obtain. Tycho B(T) and V(T) light curves are too noisy to be modeled for the three targets, and only mean Tycho colors are retained to constrain the temperature. No previous combined photometric+spectroscopic solution exists in literature for any of the three targets. Quite remarkably, CN Lyn turned out to be an equal masses F5 trip…
We have monitored the photometric variability of nine field L and T brown dwarfs for 10 nights during the course of one month with the Palomar 60 inch Telescope Near-Infrared Camera. Results of statistical analyses indicate that at least three of the nine targets show significant evidence for variability, and three more are possibly variable. Fractional deviations from the median flux vary from 5% to 25%. Two of the variable targets, 2MASS 0030-14 (L7) and SDSS 0151+12 (T1), have marginally significant peaks in their periodograms. The phased light curves show evidence for periodic behavior on …
Observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster SMC-NGC330 and its surrounding region were obtained with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. We investigated the B and Be star properties and proportions in this environment of low metallicity. We also searched for rapid variability in Be stars using photometric databases. With spectroscopic measurements we characterized the emission and properties of Be stars. By cross-correlation with photometric databases such as MACHO and OGLE, we searched for binaries in our sample of hot stars, as well as for short-term variability in Be sta…
Between 1996 and 2003 we have obtained 226 high resolution spectra of 16 stars in the field of the young open cluster NGC 6913, to the aim of constraining its main properties and study its internal kinematics. Twelve of the program stars turned out to be members, one of them probably unbound. Nine are binaries (one eclipsing and another double lined) and for seven of them the observations allowed to derive the orbital elements. All but two of the nine discovered binaries are cluster members. In spite of the young age (a few Myr), the cluster already shows signs that could be interpreted as evi…
In addition to constructing a Galactic matter mass function free from the bias induced by the hydrogen-burning limit, gravitational microlensing allows one to construct a mass function which is less affected by the problem of unresolved binaries (Gaudi & Gould). However, even with the method of microlensing, the photometric detection of binaries is limited to binary systems with relatively large separations of $b\gtrsim 0.4$ of their combined Einstein ring radius, and thus the mass function is still not totally free from the problem of unresolved binaries. In this paper, we show that by detect…
We present new observations of cool <6000K and low mass <1Msun binary systems that have been discovered by searching several modern stellar photometric databases. The search has led to a factor of 10 increase in the number of known cool close eclipsing binary systems.
Shaping axi-symmetric planetary nebulae is easier if a companion interacts with a primary at the top of the asymptotic giant branch. To determine the impact of binarity on planetary nebula formation and shaping, we need to determine the central star of planetary nebula binary fraction and period distribution. The short-period binary fraction has been known to be 10-15% from a survey of ~100 central stars for photometric variability indicative of irradiation effects, ellipsoidal variability or eclipses. This survey technique is known to be biased against binaries with long periods and this fact…
Quasi-periodic brightness oscillations (QPOs) with frequencies in the range 300-1200 Hz have been detected from at least nine neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. Here we summarize the sonic-point model for these brightness oscillations, which we present in detail elsewhere. If the sonic-point interpretation of kilohertz QPOs is confirmed, measurements of kilohertz QPO frequencies in low-mass X-ray binaries will provide new bounds on the masses and radii of neutron stars in these systems and new constraints on the equation of state of matter at high densities.
We present preliminary results of follow-up optical observations, both photometric and spectroscopic, of stellar X-ray sources, selected from the cross-correlation of ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) and TYCHO catalogues. Spectra were acquired with the Elodie spectrograph at the 193-cm telescope of the Haute Provence Observatory (OHP) and with the REOSC echelle spectrograph at the 91-cm telescope of the Catania Astrophysical Observatory (OAC), while UBV photometry was made at OAC with the same telescope. In this work, we report on the discovery of six late-type binaries, for which we have obtained …
Determinations of stellar mass and radius with realistic uncertainties at the level of 1% provide important constraints on models of stellar structure and evolution. We present a high-precision light curve of the A0IV star Psi Centauri, from the star tracker on board the WIRE satellite and the Solar Mass Ejection Imager camera on the Coriolis spacecraft. The data show that Psi Cen is an eccentric eclipsing binary system with a relatively long orbital period. The WIRE light curve extends over 28.7 nights and contains 41334 observations with 2 mmag point-to-point scatter. The eclipse depths are …
We present new spectroscopic and photometric data on the early-type overcontact binary TU Muscae. The analysis of the spectroscopic data shows that the line of sight to the system crosses three kinematically sharp and well-separated interstellar reddening sources and that the stars rotate synchronously. We present new radial velocities that are in good agreement with earlier optical velocities and, thus, do not confirm the systematically smaller velocities obtained from IUE spectra. The optical velocities are analyzed simultaneously with the photometric data to derive accurate absolute dimesio…
OAO1657-415 is only the seventh eclipsing X-ray pulsar known and therefore has the potential to yield only the seventh mass of a neutron star in an X-ray binary. Here we report photometric and spectroscopic observations of candidates for the optical counterpart to the system and identify a B6V or B5III star as a possible companion to the neutron star. We measure the observational parameters of the star and suggest reasons why OAO1657-415 may be unlike other high mass X-ray binaries.
