This letter describes how to perform searches over the complete kinematically-allowed parameter space for new pair-produced color octet particles that each subsequently decay into two jets plus missing energy at the Tevatron. This letter shows that current searches can miss otherwise discoverable spectra of particles due to CMSSM-motivated cuts. Optimizing the HT and MET cuts expands the sensitivity of these searches.
A very light gluino ($m_{\tilde g} \lsim 2 \gev$) is still consistent with experimental data and is attractive from a theoretical standpoint. This has been shown to lead to a small gluino content of the proton. We use this effect to demonstrate that such a light gluino could lead to a striking enhancement, at Tevatron, of monojets accompanied by large missing momentum. A reanalysis of the existing data may thus rule out a light gluino for a common squark mass of upto $\sim 600 \gev$.
Present data indicates that the gluino (if it exists) must be heavier than about 95~GeV. During the next few years as the Tevatron integrated luminosity increases, gluino searches will be able to probe the mass range between 100 and 200~GeV. For masses in this range, a variety of gluino decay modes can provide viable signatures for gluino detection. Apart from the classic missing transverse energy signal, the detection of high transverse momentum like-sign dileptons may be the cleanest signature for gluino production. Other signatures such as the production of a hard photon in the gluino casca…
We calculate the production cross-sections for the vector and pseudoscalar bound states of two gluinos. It is shown that existing and future colliders imply a realistic chance of observing gluinonium as a narrow peak in the two-jet invariant mass spectrum. With an integrated luminosity of 0.2 fb$^{-1}$ at the Tevatron, and the high efficiency for tagging heavy quark jets at CDF, one should be able to detect vector gluinonium for gluino masses up to about 170 GeV; or up to about 260 GeV for an upgraded Tevatron with a centre of mass energy of 2 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$. T…
The effects of light, long-lived gluinos on $2\to 2$ processes at hadron colliders are examined. Such particles can mediate single squark resonant production via $q\glu\to\sq\to q\glu$ which would significantly modify the dijet data sample. We find that squark masses in the range $130<m_{\tilde q}< 694, 595, 573$ GeV are excluded for gluino masses of $0.4, 1.3, 5.0$ GeV from existing UA2 and Tevatron data on dijet bump searches and angular distributions. Run II of the Tevatron has the capability of excluding this scenario for squark masses up to $\sim 1$ TeV.
The CDF inclusive jet transverse energy cross section at 1.8 TeV suggests anomalous behavior at both low and high transverse energies. In addition the scaled ratio of the 0.63 TeV to 1.8 TeV data lies significantly below the standard model prediction and suggests structure not attributable to standard model processes. These anomalies are in line with what would be expected in the light gluino scenario. We perform a unified fit and extrapolate to two TeV to predict the results at run II.
The next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of gluino pairs at the Tevatron are presented in this paper. Similar to the production of squark-antisquark pairs, the dependence of the cross section on the renormalization/factorization scale is reduced considerably by including the higher-order corrections. The cross section increases with respect to the lowest-order calculation which, in previous experimental analyses, had been evaluated at the scale of the invariant energy of the partonic subprocesses.
We consider single squark production in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1800$ Gev in the light gluino scenario, where production is dominated by the parton subprocess $qg\rightarrow \tilde{q}\tilde{g}\rightarrow q\tilde{g}\tilde{g}$. Computed are the total production cross-sections as well as the contribution of such production to the dijet mass distribution. We compare our cross-sections to the experimental data from the CDF collaboration with integrated luminosity of $19 pb^{-1}$.
Within the supergravity framework, sleptons are expected to be considerably lighter than squarks if gluinos and squarks are approximately degenerate. This can lead to a significant enhancement in leptonic branching ratio for neutralinos, and sometimes, charginos. Using ISAJET 7.0/ISASUSY 1.0, we evaluate the multilepton signals from cascade decays of gluinos and squarks produced at the Fermilab Tevatron $p\bar p$ collider assuming squark and slepton masses are related as in supergravity models. We find observable cross sections for spectacular event topologies: $m$-lepton + $n$-jet + $\eslt$ e…
We present the cross sections for the hadroproduction of gluinos by taking into account the CP odd dipole operators in supersymmetric QCD. The dependence of the cross sections on these operators is analyzed for the hadron colliders the Tevatron ($\sqrt S$=1.8 TeV) and the Cern LHC ($\sqrt{S}$=14 TeV). The enhancement of the hadronic cross section is obviously mass dependent and for a 500 GeV gluino, is up to 16 % (over 73 pb) at the LHC while it is 8 % (over 0.63 fb) at the Tevatron.
We investigate the collider phenomenology of gluino-bino co-annihilation scenario both at the Tevatron and 7 TeV LHC. This scenario can be realized, for example, in a class of realistic supersymmetric models with non-universal gaugino masses and t-b-τYukawa unification. The NLSP gluino and LSP bino should be nearly degenerate in mass, so that the typical gluino search channels involving leptons or hard jets are not available. Consequently, the gluino can be lighter than various bounds on its mass from direct searches. We propose a new search for NLSP gluino involving multi-b final states, aris…
We examine the discovery potential for SUSY new physics at a p{\bar p} collider upgrade of Tevatron with \sqrt s = 5.4 TeV and luminosity L ~= 4\times 10^{32} cm^{-2}s^{-1} (the Tripler). We consider the reach for gluinos and squarks using the experimental signatures with large missing transverse energy (\met) of jets + \met and 1l + jets + \met (where l=electron or muon) within the framework of minimal supergravity. The Tripler's strongest reach for the gluino is 1060 GeV for the jets + \met channel and 1140 GeV for the 1l + jets + \met channel for 30 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity (approxi…
In supersymmetric models where the magnitude of the GUT scale gaugino mass parameter M_3 is suppressed relative to M_1 and M_2, the lightest neutralino can be a mixed higgsino-bino state with a thermal relic abundance in agreement with the WMAP central value for Ω_{\rm CDM} h^2 and consistent with all other phenomenological constraints. In these models, the gluino can be as light as 200 GeV without conflicting with the LEP2 bounds on the chargino mass. Thus, gluino pair production can be accessible at the Fermilab Tevatron at high rates. In this framework, gluinos decay radiatively with a larg…
Simple SUSY GUT models based on the gauge group SO(10) require t-b-τYukawa coupling unification, in addition to gauge coupling and matter unification. The Yukawa coupling unification places strong constraints on the expected superparticle mass spectrum, with scalar masses \sim 10 TeV while gluino masses are much lighter: in the 300--500 GeV range. The very heavy squarks suppress negative interference in the q\bar{q}\to\tg\tg cross section, leading to a large enhancement in production rates. The gluinos decay almost always via three-body modes into a pair of b-quarks, so we expect at least four…
We derive Feynman rules for the interactions of a single gravitino with (s)quarks and gluons/gluinos from an effective supergravity Lagrangian in non-derivative form and use them to calculate the hadroproduction cross sections and decay widths of single gravitinos. We confirm the results obtained previously with a derivative Lagrangian as well as those obtained with the non-derivative Lagrangian in the high-energy limit and elaborate on the connection between gauge independence and the presence of quartic vertices. We perform extensive numerical studies of branching ratios, total cross section…
The possibility in supersymmetric scenarios that the dark matter candidate is a Higgsino-like neutralino means that its production can be associated with Higgs bosons. Taking advantage of this fact, we propose a LHC search strategy for gluinos with $τ$ leptons in the final state, coming from the decay of a Higgs boson. We consider the strong production of a pair of gluinos, one of which decays into the Higgsino plus jets while the other decays into the bino plus jets. In turn, this bino decays into the Higgsino plus a Higgs boson which finally decays into a $τ$-lepton pair. Therefore, the expe…
The dimuon and dielectron data from the Tevatron $\bar pp$ collider are used to probe for heavy quarks, which decay dominantly via flavour changing neutral current. Depending on whether the $FCNC$ decay occurs at the tree or loop level, one gets a lower mass limit of 85 or 75 GeV. The former applies to singlet, vector doublet and mirror type quarks while the latter applies to a lefthanded quark doublet of the fourth generation.
We show that, if decaying gravitino dark matter is responsible for the PAMELA and ATIC/PPB-BETS anomalies in the cosmic-ray electron and positron fluxes, both a reheating temperature and a gluino mass are constrained from above. In particular, the gluino mass is likely within the reach of LHC, if the observed baryon asymmetry is explained by thermal leptogenesis scenario.
Light bottom squarks and gluinos have been invoked to explain the b quark pair production excess at the Tevatron. We investigate the associated production of ttbb at hadron colliders in this scenario, and find that the rates for this process are enhanced over the Standard Model prediction. If light gluinos exist, it may be possible to detect them at the Tevatron, and they could easily be observed at the LHC.
The calculation of the next-to-leading order SUSY-QCD corrections to the production of squarks, gluinos and gauginos at the Tevatron is reviewed. The NLO corrections stabilize the theoretical predictions of the various production cross sections significantly and lead to sizeable enhancements of the most relevant cross sections for scales near the average mass of the produced massive particles. We discuss the phenomenological consequences of the results on present and future experimental analyses.
A Higgs boson with mass below 150 GeV has a total decay width of less than 20 MeV into accessible Standard Model states. This narrow width means that the usual branching fractions for such a light Higgs boson are highly susceptible to any new particles to which it has unsuppressed couplings. In particular, there are many reasonable and interesting theoretical ideas that naturally imply an invisibly-decaying Higgs boson. The motivations include models with light supersymmetric neutralinos, spontaneously broken lepton number, radiatively generated neutrino masses, additional singlet scalar(s), o…
We study the sensitivity of the Tevatron and the 7 TeV LHC to a leptoquark S coupling to a top quark and a charged lepton L (= e, mu, or tau). For the Tevatron, we focus on the case m_S < m_t, where the leptoquark pair production cross section is large, and the decay is three-body: S --> W b L^{\pm}. We argue that existing Tevatron observations could exclude m_S \lsim 160 GeV. For m_S > m_t, we show that the LHC experiments with low integrated luminosity could be sensitive to such leptoquarks decaying to tl^{\pm} with l= mu or tau.
We consider the possibility that the lightest supersymmetric particle is a heavy gluino. After discussing models in which this is the case, we demonstrate that the gluino-LSP could evade cosmological and other constraints by virtue of having a very small relic density. We then consider how neutral and charged hadrons containing a gluino will behave in a detector, demonstrating that there is generally substantial apparent missing momentum associated with a produced gluino-LSP. We next investigate limits on a (heavy) gluino-LSP deriving from LEP, LEP2 and RunI Tevatron experimental searches for …
We show that the LEP lower bound on the chargino mass, in conjunction with the well motivated theoretical requirement of radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, imply an upper bound on the lightest Higgs boson mass ($m_h\lsim62\GeV$) in a supersymmetry breaking scenario where the gluino mass is a few GeV. Moreover, Higgs searches at LEP in the context of this model require $m_h\gsim61\GeV$. The remaining experimentally allowed region in the five-dimensional parameter space of this light gluino model is severely fine-tuned (with $\tanβ=1.88-1.89$ and $m_t=114.0-114.3\GeV$) and cosmologically t…
In topcolor assisted technicolor, topgluons are massive gluons which couple mainly to top and bottom quarks. We estimate the mass reach for topgluons decaying to t anti-t at the Tevatron as a function of integrated luminosity. The mass reach for topgluons decreases with increasing topgluon width, and is 1.0 - 1.1 TeV for Run II (2 fb^-1) and 1.3-1.4 TeV for TeV33 (30 fb^-1).
In topcolor assisted technicolor, topgluons are massive gluons which couple mainly to top and bottom quarks. We estimate the mass reach for topgluons decaying to b anti-b at the Tevatron as a function of integrated luminosity. The mass reach for topgluons decreases with increasing topgluon width, and is 0.77 - 0.95 TeV for Run II (2 fb^-1) and 1.0-1.2 TeV for TeV33 (30 fb^-1).
Squarks and gluinos have been searched for at hadron colliders in events with multiple jets and missing transverse energy. No excess has been observed to date, and from a comparison of experimental cross section limits and theoretical cross section predictions one can deduce lower bounds on the squark and gluino masses. We present an improved analysis of squark and gluino mass bounds which is based on state-of-the-art cross section calculations including the summation of large threshold corrections. For illustration, we consider experimental data obtained by the CDF collaboration at the Fermil…
In most of the models beyond the Standard Model, the top quark is expected to be polarized when produced in the decay of some heavier particle, like the gluino or the stop. The polarization is constructed, in an experiment or in simulations, through the distribution of top decay products. Here, we propose an estimator of top quark polarization that depends only on the kinematics of it's mother particle, apart from its decay couplings to top quarks, and is given in terms of the top polarization expected in the rest frame of the decaying particle. This estimator allows one to estimate the top po…
We present numerical calculations of the production cross section of a heavy Z' resonance in hadron-hadron collisions with subsequent decay into top-antitop pairs. In particular, we consider the leptophobic topcolor Z' discussed under Model IV of hep-ph/9911288 which has predicted cross sections large enough to be experimentally accessible at the Fermilab Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. This article presents an updated calculation valid for the Tevatron and all proposed LHC collision energies. Cross sections are presented for various Z' widths, in p-pbar collisions at \sqrt{s}=…
The first 1/fb of LHC searches have set impressive limits on new colored particles decaying to missing energy. We address the implication of these searches for naturalness in supersymmetry (SUSY). General bottom-up considerations of natural electroweak symmetry breaking show that higgsinos, stops, and the gluino should not be too far above the weak scale. The rest of the spectrum, including the squarks of the first two generations, can be heavier and beyond the current LHC reach. We have used collider simulations to determine the limits that all of the 1/fb searches pose on higgsinos, stops, a…
The Higgs and some of the Standard Model superpartners may have been copiously produced at LEP and the Tevatron without being detected. We study a novel scenario of this type in which the Higgs decays predominantly into a light hidden sector either directly or through light SUSY states. Subsequent cascades increase the multiplicity of hidden sector particles which, after decaying back into the Standard Model, appear in the detector as clusters of collimated leptons known as lepton jets. We identify the relevant collider observables that characterize this scenario, and study a wide range of LEP…
We examine the possibility of distinguishing a supersymmetric gluino from a Kaluza-Klein gluon of universal extra dimensions (UED) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We focus on the case when all kinematically allowed tree-level decays of this particle are 3-body decays into two jets and a massive daughter (typically weak gaugino or Kaluza-Klein weak gauge boson). We show that the shapes of the dijet invariant mass distributions differ significantly in the two models, as long as the mass of the decaying particle mA is substantially larger than the mass of the massive daughter mB. We present a…
We study the production and decays of top squarks (stops) at the Tevatron collider in models of low-energy supersymmetry breaking. We consider the case where the lightest Standard Model (SM) superpartner is a light neutralino that predominantly decays into a photon and a light gravitino. Considering the lighter stop to be the next-to-lightest Standard Model superpartner, we analyze stop signatures associated with jets, photons and missing energy, which lead to signals naturally larger than the associated SM backgrounds. We consider both 2-body and 3-body decays of the top squarks and show that…
Recent theoretical developments have shown that gauge mediation has a much larger parameter space of possible spectra and mixings than previously considered. Motivated by this, we explore the collider phenomenology of gauge mediation models where a general neutralino is the lightest MSSM superpartner (the NLSP), focusing on the potential reach from existing and future Tevatron searches. Promptly decaying general neutralino NLSPs can give rise to final states involving missing energy plus photons, Zs, Ws and/or Higgses. We survey the final states and determine those where the Tevatron should ha…
The constraints on neutralino dark matter χobtained from accelerator searches at LEP, the Fermilab Tevatron and elsewhere are reviewed, with particular emphasis on results from LEP 1.5. These imply within the context of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model that m_χ\ge 21.4 GeV if universality is assumed, and yield for large tanβa significantly stronger bound than is obtained indirectly from Tevatron limits on the gluino mass. We update this analysis with preliminary results from the first LEP 2W run, and also preview the prospects for future sparticle searches at the LHC.
We analyze the Tevatron and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) reach for the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) in the presence of explicit CP-violation. Using the most recent studies from the Tevatron and LHC collaborations, we examine the CPX benchmark scenario for a range of CP-violating phases in the soft trilinear and gluino mass terms and compute the exclusion/discovery potentials for each collider on the $(M_{H^+}, \tanβ)$ plane. Projected results from Standard Model (SM)-like, non-standard, and charged Higgs searches are combined to maximize the statistical signi…
If all the supersymmetry particles (sparticles) except a light Higgs boson are too heavy to be directly produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Tevatron, a possible way to reveal evidence for supersymmetry is through their virtual effects in other processes. We examine such supersymmetric QCD effects in bottom pair production associated with a light Higgs boson at the LHC and Tevatron. We find that if the relevant sparticles (gluinos and squarks) are well above the TeV scale, too heavy to be directly produced, they can still have sizable virtual effects in this process. For large $\tan…
We present a proposal for performing model-independent jets plus missing energy searches. Currently, these searches are optimized for mSUGRA and are consequently not sensitive to all kinematically-accessible regions of parameter space. We show that the reach of these searches can be broadened by setting limits on the differential cross section as a function of the total visible energy and the missing energy. These measurements only require knowledge of the relevant Standard Model backgrounds and can be subsequently used to limit any theoretical model of new physics. We apply this approach to a…
We analyze the decays to muons of a light dilaton produced via vector boson fusion at the LHC. We investigate models in which the electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered by a spontaneously broken, approximately conformal sector. Taking into account the possibility of shifts in the dilaton Yukawa couplings to muons, we find a rather promising scenario for the conformal model search in the channel, with the possibility for a dilaton discovery at a delivered luminosity of 100 fb-1 at the LHC or, alternatively, for an extension of the exclusion zone in the model parameter space, until now fixed…
Searches for light charged Higgs bosons (H^\pm) in the decay of top quarks, t -> H^\pm b, are being carried out at the LHC and at the Tevatron. It is assumed that the dominant decay channels for such an H^\pm state are either H^\pm -> τνor H^\pm -> cs, and separate searches are performed with comparable sensitivity to the parameters m_{H^\pm} and tanbeta of the scalar potential. The branching ratio for the decay H^\pm -> cb can be as large as 80% in the Aligned Two Higgs Doublet Model and in models with three or more Higgs doublets with natural flavour conservation, while satisfying the constr…
In the presence of even minuscule baryonic R-parity violation, the stop can be the lightest superpartner and evade LHC searches because it decays into two jets. In order to cover this interesting possibility, we here consider new searches for RPV stops produced in gluino cascades. While typical searches for gluinos decaying to stops rely on same-sign dileptons, the RPV cascades usually have fewer hard leptons, less excess missing energy, and more jets than R-parity conserving cascades. If the gluino is a Dirac fermion, same-sign dilepton signals are also often highly depleted. We therefore exp…
We explore the discovery prospects for B'\bar{B}' pair production followed by direct decays B'->bX, where B' is a new quark and X is a long-lived neutral particle. We develop optimized cuts in the (m_B', m_X) plane and show that the 7 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 1 (10) fb^-1 may exclude masses up to m_B' ~ 620 (800) GeV, completely covering the mass range allowed for new quarks that get mass from electroweak symmetry breaking. This analysis is applicable to other models with b\bar{b}+MET signals, including supersymmetric models with bottom squarks decaying directly to neutralinos,…
We explore the implications of 7 TeV LHC searches for a scenario in which one of the stops is the next-to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). The NLSP stop (\tilde{t}_1) is assumed to decay exclusively into neutralino and charm quark. We consider processes where the stops are pair produced together with a hard QCD jet. We also consider stop quarks from gluino decays, \tilde{g}\to t\tilde{t}_1^\ast+\bar{t}\tilde{t}_1. We show that the monojet ATLAS and CMS searches corresponding to 1 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity are sensitive to stop masses of up to 160 GeV, with the 20% neutralino-sto…
Weak-scale supersymmetry remains to be one of the best-motivated theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. We evaluate the sensitivities of the High Luminosity (HL) and High Energy (HE) upgrades of the LHC to gluinos and stops, decaying through the simplified topologies $\tilde{g} \to q \bar{q} χ^0$, $\tilde{g} \to t \bar{t} χ^0$ and $\tilde{t} \to t \tildeχ^0$. Our HL-LHC analyses improve on existing experimental projections by optimizing the acceptance of kinematic variables. The HE-LHC studies represent the first 27 TeV analyses. We find that the HL-(HE-)LHC with 3 ab$^{-1}$ (15 ab$^{-…
The first search for supersymmetry from ATLAS with 70/nb of integrated luminosity extends the Tevatron' s reach for colored particles that decay into jets plus missing transverse energy. For gluinos that decay directly or through a one step cascade into the LSP and two jets, the mass range m_g < 205 GeV is disfavored by the ATLAS searches, regardless of the mass of the LSP. In some cases the coverage extends up to m_g ~ 295 GeV, already surpassing the Tevatron's reach for compressed supersymmetry spectra.
A Higgs boson lighter than 2 m_W that decays mostly into invisible channels (e.g., dark matter particles) is theoretically well-motivated. We study the prospects for discovery of such an invisible Higgs, h_inv, at the LHC and the Tevatron in three production modes: (1) in association with a Z, (2) through Weak Boson Fusion (WBF), and (3) accompanied by a jet. In the Z+h_inv channel, we show that the LHC can yield a discovery signal above 5 sigma with 10 fb-1 of integrated luminosity for a Higgs mass of 120 GeV. With 30 fb-1 the discovery reach extends up to a Higgs mass of 160 GeV. We also stu…
