Modeling friction on a mesoscale: Master equation for the earthquake-like model

The earthquake-like model with a continuous distribution of static thresholds is used to describe the properties of solid friction. The evolution of the model is reduced to a master equation which can be solved analytically. This approach naturally describes stick-slip and smooth sliding regimes of tribological systems within a framework which separates the calculation of the friction force from the studies of the properties of the contacts.

Master equation approach to friction at the mesoscale

At the mesoscale friction occurs through the breaking and formation of local contacts. This is often described by the earthquake-like model which requires numerical studies. We show that this phenomenon can also be described by a master equation, which can be solved analytically in some cases and provides an efficient numerical solution for more general cases. We examine the effect of temperature and aging of the contacts and discuss the statistical properties of the contacts for different situations of friction and their implications, particularly regarding the existence of stick-slip.

We review the present status of our research and understanding regarding the dynamics and the statistical properties of earthquakes, mainly from a statistical physical viewpoint. Interoccurrence time statistics in the two-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff earthquake model

We have numerically investigated statistical properties of the so-called interoccurrence time or the waiting time, i.e., the time interval between successive earthquakes, based on the two-dimensional (2-D) spring-block (Burridge-Knopoff) model, selecting the velocity-weakening property as the constitutive friction law. Realistic spatial and temporal earthquake distributions in a modified Olami-Feder-Christiensen model

We propose and study a modified version of the Olami-Feder-Christiensen model of seismicity, that includes a mechanism of structural relaxation. We obtain realistic features of seismicity that are not obtained with the original version, mainly: aftershocks that obey the Omori law and cluster spatially around the slip surface of the main shock, and averaged frictional properties qualitatively similar to those observed in rock friction, in particular the velocity weakening effect.

Mapping the train model for earthquakes onto the stochastic sandpile model

We perform a computational study of a variant of the ``train'' model for earthquakes [PRA 46, 6288 (1992)], where we assume a static friction that is a stochastic function of position rather than being velocity dependent. The model consists of an array of blocks coupled by springs, with the forces between neighbouring blocks balanced by static friction. Statistical Properties of the Inter-occurrence Times in the Two-dimensional Stick-slip Model of Earthquakes

We study earthquake interval time statistics, paying special attention to inter-occurrence times in the two-dimensional (2D) stick-slip (block-slider) model. Inter-occurrence times are the time interval between successive earthquakes on all faults in a region. Hypocenter interval statistics between successive earthquakes in the two-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff model

We study statistical properties of spatial distances between successive earthquakes, the so-called hypocenter intervals, produced by a two-dimensional (2D) Burridge-Knopoff model involving stick-slip behavior. The turbulence of superfluid helium is investigated numerically at finite temperature.
