Using a novel many-body approach, we report lattice dynamical properties of UO2 and PuO2 and uncover various contributions to their thermal conductivities. Via calculated Grueneisen constants, we show that only longitudinal acoustic modes having large phonon group velocities are efficient heat carriers. Despite the fact that some optical modes also show their velocities which are extremely large, they do not participate in the heat transfer due to their unusual anharmonicity. Ways to improve thermal conductivity in these materials are discussed.
UZr based metallic nuclear fuel is the leading candidate for next-generation sodium-cooled fast reactors in the United States. US research reactors have been using and testing this fuel type since the 1960s and accumulated considerable experience and knowledge about the fuel performance. However, most of knowledge remains empirical. The lack of mechanistic understanding of fuel performance is preventing the qualification of UZr fuel for commercial use. This paper proposes a data-driven approach, coupled with advanced post irradiation examination, powered by machine learning algorithms, to faci…
To efficiently capture the energy of the nuclear bond, advanced nuclear reactor concepts seek solid fuels that must withstand unprecedented temperature and radiation extremes. In these advanced fuels, thermal energy transport under irradiation is directly related to reactor performance as well as reactor safety. The science of thermal transport in nuclear fuel is a grand challenge due to both computational and experimental complexities. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of thermal transport research on two actinide oxides: one currently in use in commercial nuclear reactors, uranium diox…
UO2/BeO interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) is calculated by diffuse mismatch model (DMM) and the effects of ITR on UO2-BeO thermal conductivity are investigated. ITR predicted by DMM is on the order of 10-9 m2K/W. Using this ITR, UO2-BeO thermal conductivities are calculated by theoretical models and compared with experimental data. The results indicate that DMM prediction is applicable to the interface between UO2 and dispersed BeO, while not applicable to the interface between UO2 and continuous BeO. If the thermal conductivity of UO2 containing continuous BeO was to be in agreement with e…

The thermal conductivity study on the pyrochlore structured ceramics is important for utilization of these materials as an inert matrix fuel, electrolytes for oxide fuel cell and thermal barrier coating. The impact of porosity, structural defects and boundary scattering on thermal properties of the nanocrystalline Gd2Ti2O7 fabricated by spark plasma sintering followed by high energy ball milling has been investigated. The thermal conductivity has been measured in the temperature range from room temperature to 900 C using laser flash apparatus (LFA), and results were discussed by including seve…
Uranium dioxide (UO$_2$), one of the most important nuclear fuels, can accumulate excess oxygen atoms as interstitial defects, which significantly impacts thermal properties. In this study, thermal conductivities and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on UO$_2$ and UO$_{2+x}$ (x=0.3, 0.4, 0.8, 0.11) were performed at low temperatures (2-300 K). The thermal conductivity of UO$_{2+x}$ is significantly suppressed compared to UO$_2$ except near the Néel temperature TN= 30.8 K, where it is independent of x. Phonon measurements demonstrate that the heat capacities and phonon group velocities …
Magnetic response of uranium dioxide (UO2) has been investigated through temperature and magnetic field dependent dc magnetization measurements. UO2 is a paramagnet at room temperature. The magnetic susceptibility, however, deviates from Curie-Weiss (CW) like paramagnetic behavior below T = 280 K. Further down the temperature UO2 undergoes phase transition to an antiferromagnetic state below TN = 30.6 K. The zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetizations exhibit some distinct thermomagnetic irreversibility below TN. The temperature dependence of the FC magnetization is more like …
Nitride hydrides are a largely unexplored class of materials with promising applications in solid-state hydrogen fuel cells. Here, we use first-principles calculations to characterize defects and ionic mobility in Sr$_2$LiH$_2$N (SLHN), a nitride hydride with high hydride conductivity. Calculating defect formation energies, we find that SLHN contains high concentrations of hydrogen interstitials (H$_i$). H$_i^-$ migrates with very low energetic barriers, which, together with its low formation energy, implies that SLHN will have excellent hydride kinetics, potentially surpassing those of other …
Commercial nuclear power plants extensively rely on fission energy from uranium dioxide (UO2) fuel pellets that provide thermal energy; consequently, generating carbon-free power in current generation reactors. UO2 fuel incurs damage and fractures during operation due to large thermal gradients that develop across the fuel pellet during normal operation. The underlying mechanisms by which these processes take place are still poorly understood. This work is a part of our combined experimental and computational effort for quantifying the UO2 fuel fracture behavior induced by thermal shock. In th…
