We study quasi-ballistic heat transfer through air between a hot nanometer-scale tip and a sample. The hot tip/surface configuration is widely used to perform nonintrusive confined heating. Using a Monte-Carlo simulation, we find that the thermal conductance reaches 0.8 MW.m-2K-1 on the surface under the tip and show the shape of the heat flux density distribution (nanometer-scale thermal spot). These results show that a surface can be efficiently heated locally without contact. The temporal resolution of the heat transfer is a few tens of picoseconds.
The tunability of the bandgap, absorption and emission energies, photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield, exciton transport, and energy transfer in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers provides a new class of functions for a wide range of ultrathin photonic devices. Recent strain-engineering approaches have enabled us to tune some of these properties, yet dynamic control at the nanoscale with real-time and -space characterizations remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a dynamic nano-mechanical strain-engineering of naturally-formed wrinkles in a WSe2 monolayer, with real-time inve…
Optical field localization at plasmonic tip-sample nanojunctions has enabled high spatial resolution chemical analysis through tip-enhanced linear optical spectroscopies, including Raman scattering and photoluminescence. Here, we illustrate that nonlinear optical processes, including parametric four-wave mixing (4WM), second harmonic/sum-frequency generation (SHG and SFG), and two-photon photoluminescence (TPPL), can be enhanced at plasmonic junctions and spatio-spectrally resolved simultaneously with few-nm spatial resolution under ambient conditions. More importantly, through a detailed anal…
We report on the oxidation of self-assembled silicene nanoribbons grown on the Ag(110) surface using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and High-Resolution Photoemission Spectroscopy. The results show that silicene nanoribbons present a strong resistance towards oxidation using molecular oxygen. This can be overcome by increasing the electric field in the STM tunnel junction above a threshold of +2.6 V to induce oxygen dissociation and reaction. The higher reactivity of the silicene nanoribbons towards atomic oxygen is observed as expected. The HR-PES confirm these observations: Even at high exposu…
Geometric configuration and energy of a hydrogen molecule centered between two point-shaped tips of equal charge are calculated with the variational quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) method without the restriction of the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation. Ground state nuclear distribution, stability, and low vibrational excitation are investigated. Ground state results predict significant deviations from the BO treatment that is based on a potential energy surface (PES) obtained with the same QMC accuracy. The quantum mechanical distribution of molecular axis direction and bond length at a sub-nanom…
Tip-enhanced nano-spectroscopy and -imaging, such as tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL), tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), and others, have become indispensable from materials science to single molecule studies. However, the techniques suffer from inconsistent performance due to lack of nanoscale control of tip apex structure, which often leads to irreproducible spectral, spatial, and polarization resolved imaging. Instead of refining tip-fabrication to resolve this problem, we pursue the inverse approach of optimizing the nano-optical vector-field at the tip apex via adaptive optics.…
Most monolithic brittle materials are vulnerable to the failure by cracks because of a lack of intrinsic toughening mechanisms, such as the plasticity in the vicinity of the crack front. As a result, most of the efforts to mitigate the sudden failure of brittle ceramics have been focused on developing the extrinsic toughening mechanisms that hinder crack propagation behind the tip, such as the fiber bridging. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that the intrinsic toughening arises even in the brittle monolithic ceramic material such as diamond-like carbon (DLC) when its external dimens…
Ultrasonic AFM may improve fabrication technologies on the nanometer scale. In the presence of ultrasonic vibration, hard surfaces can be indented and scratched with the tip of a soft cantilever, due to its inertia. Ultrasound reduces or even eliminates friction, and hence modifies the tip-nanoparticle-surface interactions in AFM manipulation. The subsurface sensitivity of the technique makes feasible the purposed manipulation of subsurface nanoscale features by ultrasonic actuation.
