We present a new measurement of the scaling relation between X-ray luminosity and total mass for 17,000 galaxy clusters in the maxBCG cluster sample. Stacking sub-samples within fixed ranges of optical richness, N_200, we measure the mean 0.1-2.4 keV X-ray luminosity, <L_X>, from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The mean mass, <M_200>, is measured from weak gravitational lensing of SDSS background galaxies (Johnston et al. 2007). For 9 <= N_200 < 200, the data are well fit by a power-law, <L_X>/10^42 h^-2 erg/s = (12.6+1.4-1.3 (stat) +/- 1.6 (sys)) (<M_200>/10^14 h^-1 M_sun)^1.65+/-0.13. The slope agrees to within 10% with previous estimates based on X-ray selected catalogs, implying that the covariance in L_X and N_200 at fixed halo mass is not large. The luminosity intercent is 30%, or 2σ, lower than determined from the X-ray flux-limited sample of Reiprich & Bohringer (2002), assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. This difference could arise from a combination of Malmquist bias and/or systematic error in hydrostatic mass estimates, both of which are expected. The intercept agrees with that derived by Stanek et al. (2006) using a model for the statistical correspondence between clusters and halos in a WMAP3 cosmology with power spectrum normalization sigma_8 = 0.85. Similar exercises applied to future data sets will allow constraints on the covariance among optical and hot gas properties of clusters at fixed mass.
Comments to the review "Nonthermal Phenomena in Clusters of Galaxies" by Y.Rephaeli et al. (arXiv:0801.0982 [astro-ph]) that regard the presence of a hard X-ray excess in the Coma cluster, A2199, A2163 and the Bullet cluster.
In this paper I present some recent and new results regarding the effects of the cluster environment on the star formation history of galaxies. Three main aspects are discussed: the differences in the stellar population ages of cluster ellipticals and S0 galaxies; the comparison of the spectroscopic properties of galaxies in distant clusters and in Coma; and the incidence and properties of faint post-starburst/post-starforming galaxies in the Coma cluster.
We have extended our H alpha objective prism survey of 8 low-redshift clusters (viz. Abell 262, 347, 400, 426, 569, 779, 1367 and 1656) to include a complete sample of early-type galaxies within 1.5 Abell radii of the cluster centres. Of the 379 galaxies surveyed, 3% of E, E-S0 galaxies, 6% of S0s and 9% of S0/a galaxies were detected in emission. From a comparison of cluster and supercluster field galaxies, we conclude that the frequency of emission-line galaxies (ELGs; W_lambda >/= 20 angstroms) is similar for field and cluster early-type galaxies. A similar result has previously been obtain…
A study of the globular cluster systems of 23 brightest, or central, galaxies in 19 Abell clusters has recently been completed. This Letter presents some of the newly discovered correlations of the globular cluster specific frequency $S_N$ in these galaxies with other galaxy and cluster properties and puts forth an interpretation of these results. $S_N$ is found to correlate strongly with measures of the cluster density, such as the velocity dispersion of the cluster galaxies and the cluster X-ray temperature and luminosity (especially ``local'' X-ray luminosity). Within a cluster, galaxies at…
We present a new set of deep HI observations of member galaxies of the Fornax cluster. We detected 35 cluster galaxies in HI. The resulting sample, the most comprehensive to date, is used to investigate the distribution of HI in the cluster galaxies. We compare the HI content of the detected cluster galaxies with that of field galaxies by measuring HI mass-to-light ratios and the HI deficiency parameter of Solanes et al. (1996). The mean HI mass-to-light ratio of the cluster galaxies is 0.68+/-0.15, significantly lower than for a sample of HI-selected field galaxies (1.15+/-0.10), although not…
Many clusters of galaxies contain an appreciable amount of hot gas, the intracluster medium. As a consequence, gas will be stripped from galaxies that move through the inter cluster medium, if the ram pressure exceeds the internal gravitational force. We study the interaction between the intracluster medium and an extended gas component of dwarf galaxies confined by a surrounding cold dark matter halo analytically and numerically, using axisymmetric two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations at high resolution. The results show that the gas within the dark matter halo is totally stripped in a …
Spiral galaxies that are deficient in neutral Hydrogen are observed on the outskirts of the Virgo cluster. If their orbits have crossed the inner parts of the cluster, their interstellar gas may have been lost through ram pressure stripping by the hot X-ray emitting gas of the cluster. We estimate the maximum radius out to which galaxies can bounce out of a virialized system using analytical arguments and cosmological N-body simulations. In particular, we derive an expression for the turnaround radius in a flat cosmology with a cosmological constant that is simpler than previously derived expr…
I will discuss the presence of massive star clusters in starburst galaxies with an emphasis on low mass galaxies outside the local group. I will show that such galaxies, with respect to their mass and luminosity, may be very rich in young luminous clusters.
Using cosmological N-body simulations of critical (SCDM) and open ($Ω= 0.3$, OCDM) cold dark matter models, we investigate evolution of cluster galaxies. From our numerical simulation, we construct merging history trees of the galaxies. By following their merging history, we show major merger fractions of the galaxies in cluster forming regions is roughly proportional to (1+z)^{4.5} at low redshifts (z < 2) and has a steep peak at $z \simeq 2.5$ and $z \simeq 3$ in SCDM and OCDM, respectively. We also show that the cluster galaxies are affected by tidal interaction after the clusters formed. B…
AIMS: We present in this work low and intermediate resolution spectroscopic data collected for 152 early type galaxies in 8 nearby clusters with z $\leq$ 0.10. METHODS: We use low resolution data to produce the redshift and the K-correction for every individual galaxy, as well as to give their overall spectral energy distribution, and some spectral indicators, including the 4000Åbreak, the Mg$_2$ strength, and the NaD equivalent width. We have also obtained higher resolution data for early type galaxies in three of the clusters, to determine their central velocity dispersion. RESULTS: The effec…
We present new VLBI observations of Brightest Cluster Galaxies in eight nearby Abell clusters. These data show a possible difference between Brightest Cluster Galaxies in cool core clusters (two-sided pc scale jets) and in non cool core clusters (one-sided pc scale jets). We suggest that this difference could be due to the jet interaction with the surrounding medium. More data are necessary to discuss if pc-scale properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies are influenced by their peculiar morphology and position in the center of rich clusters of galaxies.
We demonstrate that individual elliptical galaxies and clusters of galaxies form a continuous X-ray luminosity---velocity dispersion (LX-sigma) relation. Our samples of 280 clusters and 57 galaxies have LX ~ sigma^4.4 and LX ~ sigma^10, respectively. This unified LX - sigma relation spans 8 orders of magnitude in LX and is fully consistent with the observed and theoretical luminosity---temperature scaling laws. Our results support the notion that galaxies and clusters of galaxies are the luminous tracers of similar dark matter halos.
Gravitational lensing in clusters of galaxies is an efficient tool to probe the mass distribution of galaxies and clusters, high redshift objects thanks to the gravitational amplification, and the geometry of the universe. We review some important aspects of cluster lensing and related issues in observational cosmology.
Using ground-based UBVRI+Halpha CCD photometry we have been carrying out a search for young massive star clusters (YMCs) in a sample consisting of 21 nearby spiral galaxies. We find a large variety concerning the richness of the cluster systems, with some galaxies containing no YMCs at all and others hosting very large numbers of YMCs. Examples of galaxies with poor cluster systems are NGC 300 and NGC 4395, while the richest cluster systems are found in the galaxies NGC 5236, NGC 2997 and NGC 1313. The age distributions of clusters in these galaxies show no obvious peaks, indicating that massi…
We analyze photometric properties of 1384 cluster galaxies as a function of the normalized distance to cluster center. These galaxies were selected in the central region ($r/r_{200} \leq$ 0.8) of 14 southern Abell clusters chosen from the Southern Abell Cluster Redshifts Survey (SARS). For 507 of these galaxies we also obtained their luminosity profiles. We have studied the morphology-clustercentric distance relation on the basis of the shape parameter $n$ of the Sérsic's law. We also have analyzed the presence of a possible segregation in magnitude for both, the galaxy total luminosity and th…
We combine optical (HST) and UV (GALEX) imaging of two intermediate redshift galaxy clusters with spectroscopy of member galaxies, to study the relation between the formation history of cluster galaxies and the assembly history of the cluster structure itself. We identify key differences in the large-scale structure and intracluster medium properties of each cluster. In order to assess the importance of cluster substructure and the ICM in the evolution of cluster galaxies, we examine several key indicators of the recent star-formation and assembly history of cluster galaxies. We find that gala…
Data are presently available on the luminosities and half-light radii of 101 globular clusters associated with low-luminosity parent galaxies. The luminosity distribution of globulars embedded in dwarf galaxies having $M_{v} > -16$ is found to differ dramatically from that for globular clusters surrounding giant host galaxies with $M_{v} < -16$. The luminosity distribution of globular clusters in giant galaxies peaks at $M_{v} \sim -7.5$, whereas that for dwarfs is found to increases monotonically down to the completeness limit of the cluster data at $M_{v} \sim -5.0$. Unexpectedly, the power …
Stellar Clusters are identified in images and in the spectra of these star forming dwarf galaxies. These Stellar Clusters have properties similar to those observed in other violent star forming galaxies and may the elementary entities of a starburst.
Rich clusters of galaxies, the largest virialized systems known, provide a powerful tool for the study of cosmology. Some of the fundamental questions that can be addressed with clusters of galaxies include: how did galaxies and large-scale structure form and evolve? What is the amount, composition and distribution of matter in the universe? I review some of the studies utilizing clusters of galaxies to investigare, among others: - The dark matter on clusters scale and the mean mass-density of the universe; - The large-scale structure of the universe; - The peculiar velocity field on large sca…
Traditionally globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies have been distinguished by using one or more of the following criteria: (1) mass, (2) luminosity, (3) size, (4) mass-to-light ratio and (5) spread in metallicity. However, a few recently discovered objects show some overlap between the domains in parameter space that are occupied by galaxies and clusters. In the present note it is shown that ellipticity can, in some cases, be used to help distinguish between globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies.
This review focuses on how galaxies and their globular cluster systems form. I first discuss the now fairly convincing evidence that some globular clusters form in galaxy starbursts/mergers. One way these observations are valuable is they place important constraints on the physics of the formation of globular clusters. Moreover, it is natural to associate the typically metal-rich clusters forming in mergers with the substantial metal-rich population of globulars around ellipticals, thereby implying an important role for galaxy mergers in the evolution of elliptical galaxies. I also highlight s…
The fraction of star-forming galaxies in rich clusters of galaxies increases rapidly with the redshift. This is interpreted as the result of a rapid evolution of cluster galaxies, though its mechanism is not yet clear. One hypothesis is that if galaxies run into the dense intracluster medium (ICM) regions, starbursts can be induced due to compression of molecular clouds in the galaxies by a raised "external" ICM pressure. In a merging cluster, there would be dense ICM regions and some galaxies may experience a rapid increase of external pressure. Thus, if the mechanism works, starbursts would …
At the present epoch, clusters of galaxies are known to be a hostile environment for emission-line galaxies, which are more commonly found in low density regions outside of clusters. In contrast, going to higher redshifts the population of emission-line galaxies in clusters becomes progressively more conspicuous, and large numbers of star-forming late-type galaxies are observed. I present an overview of the observational findings and the theoretical expectations regarding the evolution of emission-line galaxies in dense environments, discussing the properties of these galaxies and the current …
The detection of resonance absorption lines against known objects such as individual galaxies and clusters of galaxies is a powerful approach for studying the gas content of these systems. We describe an efficient method of identifying background quasars suitable for absorption line studies. In this finding technique, we identify serendipitous X-ray sources, about 1/8 of which are suitably bright quasars at moderate redshift. We identify 16 new quasars and galaxies with active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and confirm 5 known quasars and AGNs, superimposed behind elliptical galaxies and clusters of …
A detailed description is given of the data analysis leading to the discovery of young massive star clusters (YMCs) in a sample of 21 nearby galaxies. A new useful tool, ishape, for the derivation of intrinsic shape parameters of compact objects is presented, and some test results are shown. Completeness tests for the cluster samples are discussed, and ishape is used to estimate cluster sizes. Half-light radii of 0 - 20 pc are derived for clusters in 2 of the most cluster-rich galaxies, NGC 1313 and NGC 5236, which is within the range spanned by globular clusters in the Milky Way and by YMCs i…
A significant fraction of clusters of galaxies are observed to have substructure, which implies that merging between clusters and subclusters is a rather common physical process of cluster formation. It still remains unclear how cluster merging affects the evolution of cluster member galaxies. We report the results of numerical simulations, which show the dynamical evolution of a gas-rich late-type spiral in a merger between a small group of galaxies and a cluster. The simulations demonstrate that time-dependent tidal gravitational field of the merging excites non-axisymmetric structure of the…
We present multi-fiber spectroscopy and broadband imaging of early-type galaxies in five nearby rich clusters of galaxies. The main purpose was to look for ``abnormal'' spectrum galaxies (i.e., post-starburst galaxies which have strong Balmer absorption lines and emission line galaxies) in nearby clusters that are similar to those found by Caldwell et al. (1993) in the Coma cluster. Our primary conclusion is that 15% of the early-type galaxies in these nearby rich clusters have signs of ongoing or recent star formation. Thus activity similar to that seen in distant clusters is still ongoing, a…
Clusters of galaxies are large gravitationally bound systems which consist of several observable components: hundreds of galaxies, hot gas between the galaxies and sometimes relativistic particles. These components are emitting in different wavelengths from radio to X-rays. We show that the combination of observations at different frequencies and also theoretical models is giving now a comprehensive picture of these massive objects. Topics presented here include cluster masses, baryon fractions, the dynamical state of clusters, the physical processes in clusters and cosmological parameters der…
I show that three independent methods utilizing clusters of galaxies - cluster dynamics and mass-to-light ratio, baryon fraction in clusters, and cluster evolution - all indicate the same robust result: the mass-density of the universe is low, Omega ~ 0.2, and the mass approximately traces light on large scales.
We combine dissipationless N-body simulations and semi-analytic models of galaxy formation to study the spatial and kinematic distributions of cluster galaxies in a LCDM cosmology. We investigate how the star formation rates, colours and morphologies of galaxies vary as a function of distance from the cluster centre and compare our results with the CNOC1 survey of galaxies from 15 X-ray luminous clusters in the redshift range 0.18 to 0.55. In our model, gas no longer cools onto galaxies after they fall into the cluster and their star formation rates decline on timescales of 1-2 Gyr. Galaxies i…
We investigate in this paper the error on the cluster redshift estimate as a function of: (1) the number of galaxy structures along the line of sight; (2) the morphology of the clusters (regular/substructures); (3) the nature of the observed galaxies (cD/normal galaxies); (4) the number of observed galaxies; and (5) the distance of the clusters. We find that if we use cD galaxies we have errors of less than 2% (at the 1-$σ$ level) for the cluster distances except when the clusters are very complex. In those cases when we use five redshift measurements along the cluster lines of sight to comput…
We calculate the torque on galaxies in clusters due to gravity and to dynamical friction forces in order to study the possible origin of small-scale alignment effects as the result of interactions with their environment. The equation of motion for the position angle of a galaxy is derived by using a ple model. We find that weak radial alignment effects can be produced by this mechanism involving only the most massive galaxies. We also introduce a dependence on the cluster eccentricity to our equations in order to explore the alignment of galaxies with the cluster's major axis. We find that in …
We study the evolution of galaxies in clusters by the analysis of a sample of about 3000 galaxies, members of 59 clusters from the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS). We distinguish four cluster galaxy populations, based on their radial and velocity distributions within the clusters. Using the class of ellipticals and S0's (excluding the very bright ellipticals), we determine the average cluster mass profile, that we compare with mass models available from numerical simulations. We then use this cluster mass profile to solve for the anisotropy profiles of the three other cluster galaxy po…
The main goal of this paper is to compare the relative importance of destruction by tides, vs. destruction by mergers, in order to assess if tidal destruction of dwarf galaxies in clusters is a viable scenario for explaining the origin of intracluster stars. We have designed a simple algorithm for simulating the evolution of isolated clusters. The distribution of galaxies in the cluster is evolved using a direct gravitational N-body algorithm combined with a subgrid treatment of physical processes such as mergers, tidal disruption, and galaxy harassment. Using this algorithm, we have performed…
We have investigated the effect of pressure from intracluster medium (ICM) on disk galaxies in merging clusters. The ram-pressure on the galaxies rapidly increases when two clusters collide. This leads to stripping of the interstellar medium (ISM) and decrease of star formation rate (SFR) of the galaxies. On the other hand, the increase of SFR caused by compression of ISM is less significant. Thus, cluster merger does not trigger, but weakens star formation activity of the galaxies. In the central region of the colliding clusters, blue galaxies with high velocity should exist, although most of…
Analysing the weak lensing distortions of the images of faint background galaxies provides a means to constrain the average mass distribution of cluster galaxies and potentially to test the extent of their dark matter haloes as a function of the density of their environment. The observable image distortions are a consequence of the interplay between the effects of a global cluster mass distribution and the perturbations due to individual cluster galaxies. Starting from a reconstruction of the cluster mass distribution with conventional techniques, we apply a maximum likelihood method to infer …
Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that a strong dynamical and morphological evolution of disk galaxies has occurred in clusters of galaxies. I present the result of the self-consistent high-resolution simulations of galactc dynamics in the three cosmologically formed clusters. The disks of large galaxies survive but thicken by a factor of two and cease new star formation. The dark matter halos are truncated in agreement with analytical models. The overall effect is the morphological transformation of spirals into S0 galaxies.
We present the results of an isophotal shape analysis of galaxies in the Coma and Perseus clusters. These data, together with those of two previous papers, provide two complete samples of galaxies with reliable Hubble types in rich clusters: 1) all galaxies brighter than m_b = 16.5 falling within one degree (=2.3 Mpc) from the center of the Coma cluster (187 galaxies), 2) all galaxies brighter than m_{Zwicky}=15.7 in a region of 5 deg 3' times 5 deg 27' around the center of the Perseus cluster (139 galaxies). These two complete samples cover 5 orders of magnitude in galaxy density and span are…
It appears that the dynamical status of clusters and groups of galaxies is related to the large-scale structure of the Universe. A few interesting trends have been established: (1) The Cluster Substructure - Alignment Connection, by which clusters show a strong correlation between their tendency to be aligned with their neighbors and their dynamical state (as indicated by the existence of significant substructres). (2) The Cluster Dynamics -Cluster Clustering Connection, by which dynamically young clusters are more clustered than the overall cluster population. (3) The Cluster- Supercluster Al…
Clusters of galaxies are strong emitters of EUV and soft X-rays substantially in excess of the contribution from the hot intra-cluster medium at X-ray temperatures. After the initial discovery of EUV excess emission in the Virgo cluster, the phenomenon was reported also for the Coma, A1795 and A2199 clusters. Recent reobservations confirmed the finding, and further searches on a large sample of nearby galaxy clusters are clearly revealing the cosmological impact of the discovery.
We investigate the evolution of the star formation rate in cluster galaxies. We complement data from the CNOC1 cluster survey (0.15<z<0.6) with measurements from galaxy clusters in the 2dF galaxy redshift survey (0.05<z<0.1) and measurements from recently published work on higher redshift clusters, up to almost z=1. We focus our attention on galaxies in the cluster core, ie. galaxies with r<0.7h^{-1}_{70}Mpc. Averaging over clusters in redshift bins, we find that the fraction of galaxies with strong [OII] emission is < 20% in cluster cores, and the fraction evolves little with redshift. In con…
This paper given at the meeting on "Mapping, Measuring and Modelling the Universe" presents three topics: 1) the study of the clusters and groups of galaxies found serendipitously in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) region of the ROSAT all-sky survey; 2) the highest redshift clusters found in the EMSS (up to z=0.82) and the cosmological implications of their very existence; 3) the gravitational lensing in the EMSS X-ray selected clusters of galaxies observed by the Hubble Space Telescope.
We review several aspects of clusters of galaxies and their application to cosmology. We present first results of numerical simulations of the dynamics of the intra-cluster gas and of different interaction processes between cluster galaxies and the intra-cluster gas. In particular metallicity maps are very useful to determine the importance of the different interaction processes. Also mass determination methods and possible sources for uncertainties in the measurements are shown.
We discuss a correlation between star formation activity (SFA) and luminosity of star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts of $0.2\le z\le 0.6$ in both cluster and field environments. Equivalent width (EW) of [O{\sc ii}] is used for measurement of the SFA, and $R$-band absolute magnitude, $M_R$, for the luminosity. In less-luminous ($M_R \gsim -20.7$) galaxies, we find : (1) the mean EW([O{\sc ii}]) of cluster galaxies is smaller than that of field galaxies; but (2) some cluster galaxies have as large EW([O{\sc ii}]) as that of actively star-forming field galaxies. Based on both our resu…
We study a unique proto-cluster of galaxies, the supergroup SG1120-1202. We quantify the degree to which morphological transformation of cluster galaxies occurs prior to cluster assembly in order to explain the observed early-type fractions in galaxy clusters at z=0. SG1120-1202 at z~0.37 is comprised of four gravitationally bound groups that are expected to coalesce into a single cluster by z=0. Using HST ACS observations, we compare the morphological fractions of the supergroup galaxies to those found in a range of environments. We find that the morphological fractions of early-type galaxies…
Ram pressure stripping can remove significant amounts of gas from galaxies that orbit in clusters and massive groups, and thus has a large impact on the evolution of cluster galaxies. In this paper, we reconstruct the present-day distribution of ram-pressure, and the ram pressure histories of cluster galaxies. To this aim, we combine the Millennium Simulation and an associated semi-analytic model of galaxy evolution with analytic models for the gas distribution in clusters. We find that about one quarter of galaxies in massive clusters are subject to strong ram-pressures that are likely to cau…
We have obtained spectra for 103 published globular cluster candidates in the Sculptor Group galaxies NGC 253 and NGC 55. On the basis of radial velocities and digitized plate images, 14 globular clusters are identified in NGC 253 and one probable globular cluster is identified in NGC 55. The majority of the objects in the sample appear to be background galaxies. We have obtained and analysed COSMOS plate scans of NGC 253 and NGC 55 and use these along with the spectroscopically identified clusters to define new samples of globular cluster candidates in the two galaxies which should have reduc…
Despite the rapid observational progress in the study of young massive star clusters, the formation of globular clusters still remains poorly understood. Yet, it is emerging that globular cluster formation is intimately linked to the formation of the Galaxy. I discuss a generic scenario of the cluster formation within progenitor galaxies, based on the available observational constraints. The oldest clusters formed around redshift z = 7, but the process continued at least until z = 3. Because of their high density, globular clusters survived when their progenitor galaxies were disrupted by the …
We present a photometric study of the globular cluster systems of the Fornax cluster galaxies NGC 1374, NGC 1379, and NGC 1387. The data consists of images from the wide-field MOSAIC Imager of the CTIO 4-m telescope, obtained with Washington C and Kron-Cousins R filters. The images cover a field of 36 x 36 arcmin, corresponding to 200 x 200 kpc at the Fornax distance. Two of the galaxies, NGC 1374 and NGC 1379, are low-luminosity ellipticals while NGC 1387 is a low-luminosity lenticular. Their cluster systems are still embedded in the cluster system of NGC 1399. Therefore the use of a large fi…
We report the discovery of a statistically significant radial alignment of cluster galaxies in a sample of 85 X-ray selected clusters observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The tendency for alignment is a robust feature of our sample and does not vary significantly with individual cluster or galaxy properties. We use dynamical arguments to show that a significant fraction of cluster galaxies should be undergoing a parametric tidal resonance that can cause their long axes to orient themselves towards the center of the cluster potential, and therefore tentatively ascribe the observed radial a…
We have examined the orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in poor MKW and AWM clusters and find that, like their counterparts in richer Abell clusters, poor cluster BCGs exhibit a strong propensity to be aligned with the principal axes of their host clusters as well as the surrounding distribution of nearby (< 20/h Mpc) Abell clusters. The processes responsible for dominant galaxy alignments are therefore independent of cluster richness. We argue that these alignments most likely arise from anisotropic infall of material into clusters along large-scale filaments.
We summarize several results based on the velocity data-set for cluster galaxies provided by ENACS (the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey). We describe the distribution of velocity dispersions of a complete sample of rich galaxy clusters, and compare it to the distribution of cluster X-ray temperatures, and with predictions of theoretical models. We then address the issue of the existence of a Fundamental Plane (FP) for rich clusters, first suggested by Schaeffer et al. We confirm the existence of this FP with the ENACS data-set. The cluster FP is different from the FP of elliptical galaxies, an…
Young star clusters in interacting galaxies are often found in groups or clusters of star clusters containing up to 100 single clusters. In our project we study the future fate of these clusters of star clusters. We find that the star clusters merge on time scales of a few dynamical crossing times of the super-cluster. The resulting merger object has similarities with observed dwarf ellipticals (dE). Furthermore, if destructive processes like tidal heating, dynamical friction or interaction with disc or bulge of the parent galaxy are taken into account our merger objects may evolve into object…
We made a detailed analysis of the sample of 39 cluster spiral galaxies of various types observed at H$α$ wavelength by Amram et al. (1992 to 1996), with a scanning Fabry-Perot. We plotted the outer gradient of their rotation curves as a function of the deprojected cluster-centric distance. The rotation curves of late type galaxies markedly rise far from the cluster center. This suggests evolutionary effects, since early types show no special trend. We suggest that the evolution process within a cluster leads late type galaxies to exhibit flatter curves when they get closer to the center, on t…
We propose that strong magnetic fields should be generated at shock waves associated with formation of galaxies or clusters of galaxies by the Weibel instability, an instability in collisionless plasmas. The strength of the magnetic fields generated through this mechanism is close to the order of those observed in galaxies or clusters of galaxies at present. If the generated fields do not decay rapidly, this indicates that strong amplification of magnetic fields after formation of galaxies or clusters of galaxies is not required. This mechanism could have worked even at a redshift of ~10, and …
Rich clusters of galaxies are the most massive virialized systems known. Even though they contain only a small fraction of all galaxies, rich clusters provide a powerful tool for the study of galaxy formation, dark matter, large-scale structure, and cosmology. Superclusters, the largest known systems of galaxies, extend to (approx) 100h^{-1} Mpc in size and highlight the large-scale structure of the universe. This large-scale structure reflects initial conditions in the early universe and places strong contraints on models of galaxy formation and on cosmology. Some of the questions that can be…
I present selected results from a wide-field CCD survey of the globular cluster systems of giant galaxies, including showing how measurements of the specific frequency of metal-poor globular clusters can constrain the redshift of their formation.
We investigated the evolution of clusters of galaxies using self-consistent N-body simulations. We varied the initial model of galaxies and clusters, and studied the dependence of evolution on initial conditions. We found that the growth rate of the common halo depends only weakly on galaxy models. On the other hand, the growth rate depends strongly on cluster models. Initially the growth rate is higher for cluster models with higher central density. However, this high growth rate drops in a few crossing times of the cluster, and after several crossing times, roughly half of the total mass is …
We present the results of a study of the globular cluster systems of 6 massive spiral galaxies, originally cataloged as low surface brightness galaxies but here shown to span a wide range of central surface brightness values, including two intermediate to low surface brightness galaxies. We used the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board HST to obtain photometry in the F475W and F775W bands and select sources with photometric and morphological properties consistent with those of globular clusters. A total of 206 candidates were identified in our target galaxies. From a direct comparison with the…
