The classical confinement condition of test particles to a brane universe in the absence of non-gravitational forces is transformed using the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. The transformed condition provides a direct criterion for selecting in a cosmological scenario 5D bulk manifolds wherein it is possible to obtain confinement of trajectories to 4D hypersurfaces purely due to classical gravitational effects.
We consider the motion of test particles in a thick brane version of Randall-Sundrum type II model. It is known that gravity alone cannot explain the confinement of test particles in this kind of brane. In this paper we show that a stable confinement in a domain wall is possible by admitting a direct interaction between test particles and a scalar field. This interaction is implemented by a modification of the Lagrangian of the particle which is inspired by a Yukawa-type interaction between fermions and scalar fields.
We investigate test particle trajectories in warped spacetimes with a thick brane warp factor, a cosmological on--brane line element and a time dependent extra dimension. The geodesic equations are reduced to a first order autonomous dynamical system. Using analytical methods, we arrive at some useful general conclusions regarding possible trajectories. Oscillatory motion, suggesting confinement about the location of the thick brane, arises for a growing warp factor. On the other hand, we find runaway trajectories (exponential-like) for a decaying warp factor. Variations of the extra dimension…
We consider (thin) braneworlds with conical singularities in six-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a bulk cosmological constant. The Gauss-Bonnet term is necessary in six dimensions for including non-trivial brane matter. We show that this model for axially symmetric bulks does not possess isotropic braneworld cosmological solutions.
This work focuses on an unexplored aspect of non-symmetric geometry where {\it only} the off-diagonal metric components along the extra dimension, in a 5-dimensional spacetime, are non-symmetric. We show that the energy densities of the stationary non-symmetric models are similar to that of brane models thereby mimicking the thick-brane scenario. We find that the massive test particles are confined near the location of the brane for both growing and decaying warp factors. This feature is unique to the non-symmetric nature of our model. We have also studied the dynamical models where standard 4…
A family of deformed black branes is employed to examine the confinement/deconfinement phase transition in AdS/QCD. The holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) plays the role of the order parameter driving the confinement/deconfinement phase transition. The binding energy of quark-antiquark bound states and the critical length that makes a null variation of the HEE, together with the critical temperature separating the deconfined quark-gluon plasma to the confined hadronic phase, are discussed in the deformed black brane background, matching current experimental hadronic data.
A model is constructed for the confinement of test particles moving on a brane. Within the classical framework of this theory, confining a test particle to the brane eliminates the effects of extra dimensions, rendering them undetectable. However, in the quantized version of the theory, the effects of the gauge fields and extrinsic curvature are pronounced and this might provide a hint for detecting them. As a consequence of confinement the mass of the test particle is shown to be quantized. The condition of stability against small perturbations along extra dimensions is also studied and its r…
We consider a higher-dimensional hard wall model with an infrared (IR) cut-off in asymptotically AdS space and investigate its thermodynamics via the holographic renormalization method. We find a relation between the confinement temperature and the IR cut-off for any dimension. It is also shown that the entropy of $p$-branes with the number of coincident branes (the number of the gauge group) $N$ jumps from leading order in $\cal O$($N^0$) at the confining low temperature phase to $\cal O$($N^{\frac{p+1}{2}}$) at the deconfining high temperature phase like $D3$-branes ($p=3$) case. On the othe…
A wormhole solution is presented on a braneworld scenery, the material source is given by a perfect fluid on brane that does not violate the energy conditions. we propose an ansatz for the state equation resulting in a family of solutions that satisfy necessary conditions over the free parameters of the solution. The effect of projecting the 5D Weyl tensor components on the brane, give the conditions to have a wormhole satisfying the NEC, besides simultaneously guaranteeing the absence of horizons. Furthermore, our model predicts an astronomical bound for the wormhole throat.
We study vector perturbations about four-dimensional brane-world cosmologies embedded in a five-dimensional vacuum bulk. Even in the absence of matter perturbations, vector perturbations in the bulk metric can support vector metric perturbations on the brane. We show that during de Sitter inflation on the brane vector perturbations in the bulk obey the same wave equation for a massless five-dimensional field as found for tensor perturbations. However, we present the second-order effective action for vector perturbations and find no normalisable zero-mode in the absence of matter sources. The s…
There have been some recent claims that brane-worlds of co-dimension two in a 6D bulk with compact extra dimensions may lead to self-tuning of the effective 4D cosmological constant. Here we show that if a phase transition occurs on a flat brane, so as to change its tension, then the brane will not remain flat. In other words, there is really no self-tuning in such models, which can in fact be understood in four-dimensional terms and are therefore subject to Weinberg's no-go theorem.
In the braneworld scenario ordinary standard model matter and on-gravitational fields are confined by some trapping mechanism to the 4-dimensional universe constituting the D3-branes which are embedded in a (4 + n)-dimensional manifold referred to as the bulk (n being the number of extra dimensions). The notion of particle confinement is necessary for theories with non-compact extra dimensions, otherwise, the particles would escape from our 4-dimensional world along unseen directions. In this paper, we have considered a five-dimensional warped product space-time having an exponential warping f…
We investigate the dynamics of a spherically symmetric vaccum on a Randall and Sundrum 3-brane world. Under certain natural conditions, the effective Einstein equations on the brane form a closed system for spherically symmetric dark radiation. We determine exact dynamical and inhomogeneous solutions, which are shown to depend on the brane cosmological constant, on the dark radiation tidal charge and on its initial energy configuration. We identify the conditions defining these solutions as singular or as globally regular. Finally, we discuss the confinement of gravity to the vicinity of the b…
Recently there has been an interest in studying the role that geometry may play in the problem of confining fermions to our four-dimensional spacetime. In general, the focus is on non-Riemannian geometries which possess fields like torsion and non-metricity. In this paper, the degrees of freedom present in the spin connection in a Riemannian manifold are used to confine fermions. It turns out that one can use this connection to trap these particles inside a brane.
We investigate the cosmological properties of an "induced gravity" brane scenario in the absence of mirror symmetry with respect to the brane. We find that brane evolution can proceed along one of four distinct branches. By contrast, when mirror symmetry is imposed, only two branches exist, one of which represents the self-accelerating brane, while the other is the so-called normal branch. This model incorporates many of the well-known possibilities of brane cosmology including phantom acceleration (w < -1), self-acceleration, transient acceleration, quiescent singularities, and cosmic mimicry…
We show that, in the absence of matter in the bulk, the Einstein equations and the Gauss-normal form of the metric place stringent restrictions on the form of the event horizon in a brane world. As a consequence, the off-brane extension of the standard 4-D Schwarzschild horizon in the Randall-Sundrum $AdS_5$ spacetime, as it is viewed from the brane can only be of a tubular shape, instead of a pancake shape. When it is viewed from the $AdS_5$ horizon, such a tubular horizon is absent.
We review a construction of holographic geometries dual to N=4 SYM theory on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background and in the presence or absence of a gluon condensate and instanton density. We find the most general solution with arbitrary scale factor and show that it is diffeomorphic to topological black holes. We introduce a time-dependent boundary cosmological constant λ(t) and show energy-momentum conservation in this background. For constant λ, the deconfinement properties of the temporal Wilson loop are analysed. In most cases the Wilson loop confines throughout cosmological evolution…
Taking the Randall-Sundrum models as background scenario, we derive generalized Israel-Lanczos-Sen thin-shell junction conditions for systems in which several bulk scalar fields are non-minimally coupled to gravity. We demonstrate that the form of the junction conditions (though arguably not the physics) depends on the choice of frame. We show that generally (in any frame except the Einstein frame) the presence of a thin shell induces discontinuities in the normal derivative of the scalar field, even in the absence of any direct interaction between the thin shell and the scalar field. For some…
We review the circumstances under which test particles can be localized around a spacetime section Σ_0 smoothly contained within a codimension-1 embedding space M. If such a confinement is possible, Σ_0 is said to be totally geodesic. Using three different methods, we derive a stability condition for trapped test particles in terms of intrinsic geometrical quantities on Σ_0 and M; namely, confined paths are stable against perturbations if the gravitational stress-energy density on M is larger than that on Σ_0, as measured by an observed travelling along the unperturbed trajectory. We confirm o…
We construct a warm inflation model with inflaton field non-minimally coupled to induced gravity on a warped DGP brane. We incorporate possible modification of the induced gravity on the brane in the spirit of $f(R)$-gravity. We study cosmological perturbations in this setup. In the case of two field inflation such as warm inflation, usually entropy perturbations are generated. While it is expected that in the case of one field inflation these perturbations to be removed, we show that even in the absence of the radiation field, entropy perturbations are generated in our setup due to non-minima…
