The role of radiation in general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) accretion simulations is discussed through axisymmetric simulations of the evolution of an initial torus seeded with a weak magnetic field. The paper compares and contrasts the rate of accretion onto a Kerr black hole and mass flux out out of the initial torus at large radii in the GRMHD code of De Villiers and Hawley and a newly developed radiative GRMHD code. This rGRMHD code currently operates in the diffusion approximation, restricting the study of radiative effects to the bound portion of the accretion disk/jet system. However, these preliminary findings suggest that radiative effects do play a potentially significant role in regulating the accretion flow.
We investigate jet formation in black-hole systems using 3-D General Relativistic Particle-In-Cell (GRPIC) and 3-D GRMHD simulations. GRPIC simulations, which allow charge separations in a collisionless plasma, do not need to invoke the frozen condition as in GRMHD simulations. 3-D GRPIC simulations show that jets are launched from Kerr black holes as in 3-D GRMHD simulations, but jet formation in the two cases may not be identical. Comparative study of black hole systems with GRPIC and GRMHD simulations with the inclusion of radiate transfer will further clarify the mechanisms that drive the …
We have carried out 2D and 3D general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of jets launched self-consistently from accretion disks orbiting Kerr black holes and applied the results to the inner engine of the collapsar model of gamma-ray bursts. The accretion flow launches energetic jets in the axial funnel region of the disk/jet system, as well as a substantial coronal wind. The jets feature knot-like structures of extremely hot, ultra-relativistic gas; the gas in these knots begins at moderate velocities near the inner engine, and is accelerated to ultra-relativistic velocities (Loren…
A new code and methodology are introduced for solving the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) equations in fixed background spacetimes using time-explicit, finite-volume discretization. The code has options for solving the GRMHD equations using traditional artificial-viscosity (AV) or non-oscillatory central difference (NOCD) methods, or a new extended AV (eAV) scheme using artificial-viscosity together with a dual energy-flux-conserving formulation. The dual energy approach allows for accurate modeling of highly relativistic flows at boost factors well beyond what has been achiev…
Bondi type hydrodynamic accretion of the surrounding matter onto Kerr black hole with an arbitrary rotational parameter is considered. The effects of viscosity, thermal conductivity and interaction with radiation field are neglected. The black hole is supposed to be at rest with respect to matter at infinity. The flow is adiabatic and has no angular momentum. The fact that usually in astrophysics substance far from the black hole has nonrelativistic temperature introduces small parameter to the problem and allows to search for the solution as a perturbation to the accretion of a cold, that is …
We present a general procedure to solve numerically the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) equations within the framework of the 3+1 formalism. The work reported here extends our previous investigation in general relativistic hydrodynamics (Banyuls et al. 1997) where magnetic fields were not considered. The GRMHD equations are written in conservative form to exploit their hyperbolic character in the solution procedure. All theoretical ingredients necessary to build up high-resolution shock-capturing schemes based on the solution of local Riemann problems (i.e. Godunov-type schem…
This paper describes the development and testing of a general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) code to study ideal MHD in the fixed background of a Kerr black hole. The code is a direct extension of the hydrodynamic code of Hawley, Smarr, and Wilson, and uses Evans and Hawley constrained transport (CT) to evolve the magnetic fields. Two categories of test cases were undertaken. A one dimensional version of the code (Minkowski metric) was used to verify code performance in the special relativistic limit. The tests include Alfvén wave propagation, fast and slow magnetosonic shocks, raref…
We present results from fully general relativistic three-dimensional numerical studies of thick-disk accretion onto a rapidly-rotating (Kerr) black hole with a spin axis that is tilted (not aligned) with the angular momentum vector of the disk. We initialize the problem with the solution for an aligned, constant angular momentum, accreting thick disk, which is then allowed to respond to the Lense-Thirring precession of the tilted black hole. The precession causes the disk to warp, beginning at the inner edge and moving out on roughly the Lense-Thirring precession timescale. The propagation of …
We extend the work by Appl and Camenzind (1988) for special relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) jets, to fully general relativistic studies of the standing shock formation for accreting MHD plasma in a rotating, stationary and axisymmetric black hole magnetosphere. All the postshock physical quantities are expressed in terms of the relativistic compression ratio, which can be obtained in terms of preshock quantities. Then, the downstream state of a shocked plasma is determined by the upstream state of the accreting plasma. In this paper sample solutions are presented for slow magnetosonic s…
We present a new geometrical approach to the study of accretion flows onto rotating (Kerr) black holes. Instead of Boyer-Lindquist coordinates, the standard choice in all existing numerical simulations in the literature, we employ the simplest example of a horizon adapted coordinate system, the Kerr-Schild coordinates. This choice eliminates boundary ambiguities and unphysical divergent behavior at the event horizon. Computations of Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto extreme Kerr black holes, performed here for the first time, demonstrate the key advantages of this procedure. We argue it offers the be…
In our program of studying numerically the so-called Bondi-Hoyle accretion in the fully relativistic regime, we present here first results concerning the evolution of matter accreting supersonically onto a rotating (Kerr) black hole. These computations generalize previous results where the non-rotating (Schwarzschild) case was extensively considered. We parametrize our initial data by the asymptotic conditions for the fluid and explore the dependence of the solution on the angular momentum of the black hole. Towards quantifying the robustness of our numerical results, we use two different geom…
We present a theoretical model for driving jets by accretion onto Kerr black holes and try to give an answer to the following question: How much energy could be extracted from a rotating black hole and its accretion disk in order to power relativistic jets in Active Galactic Nuclei?
The efficiency of thin disk accretion onto black holes depends on the inner boundary condition, specifically the torque applied to the disk at the last stable orbit. This is usually assumed to vanish. I estimate the torque on a magnetized disk using a steady magnetohydrodynamic inflow model originally developed by Takahashi et al., 1990. I find that the efficiency epsilon can depart significantly from the classical thin disk value. In some cases epsilon > 1, i.e. energy is extracted from the black hole.
In the framework of the braneworld models, rotating black holes can be described by the Kerr metric with a tidal charge representing the influence of the non-local gravitational (tidal) effects of the bulk space Weyl tensor onto the black hole spacetime. We study the influence of the tidal charge onto profiled spectral lines generated by radiating tori orbiting in vicinity of a rotating black hole. We show that with lowering the negative tidal charge of the black hole, the profiled line becomes to be flatter and wider keeping their standard character with flux stronger at the blue edge of the …
We investigate the wave properties of the Kerr black hole with isothermal plasma using 3+1 ADM formalism. The corresponding Fourier analyzed perturbed GRMHD equations are used to obtain the dispersion relations. These relations lead to the real values of the components of wave vector $\textbf{k}$ which are used to evaluate the quantities like phase and group velocities etc. These have been discussed graphically in the neighborhood of the pair production region. The results obtained verify the conclusion of Mackay et al. according to which rotation of a black hole is required for negative phase…
We study the structure and properties of hot MHD accretion onto a Kerr black hole. In such a system, the hole is magnetically coupled to the inflowing gas and exerts a torque onto the accretion flow. A hot settling flow can form around the hole and transport the angular momentum outward, to the outer edge of the flow. Unlike other hot flows, such as advection- and convection-dominated flows and inflow-outflow solutions (ADAFs, CDAFs, and ADIOS), the properties of the hot settling flow are determined by the spin of the central black hole, but are insensitive to the mass accretion rate. Therefor…
We write down and solve equations describing steady state, optically thin, advection-dominated accretion onto a Kerr black hole. The mean flow, described by the relativistic fluid equations, is axisymmetric and vertically averaged. The effect of turbulence in the flow is represented by a viscous shear stress. Our treatment differs in several important ways from earlier work: we use a causal prescription for the shear stress, we do not assume the relativistic enthalpy is unity (this is important for rapidly rotating holes), and we use a relativistic equation of state. We present several represe…
We study the influence of the tidal charge parameter of the braneworld models onto some optical phenomena in rotating black hole spacetimes. The escape photon cones are determined for special families of locally non-rotating, circular geodetical and radially free falling observers. The silhouette of a rotating black hole, the shape of an equatorial thin accretion disk and time delay effect for direct and indirect images of a radiation hot spot orbiting the black hole are given and classified in terms of the black hole rotational and tidal parameters. It is shown that rising of negatively-value…
In recent work we presented the first results of global general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of tilted (or misaligned) accretion disks around rotating black holes. The simulated tilted disks showed dramatic differences from comparable untilted disks, such as asymmetrical accretion onto the hole through opposing "plunging streams" and global precession of the disk powered by a torque provided by the black hole. However, those simulations used a traditional spherical-polar grid that was purposefully underresolved along the pole, which prevented us from assessing the behav…
An analytic solution for the accretion of ultra-hard perfect fluid onto a moving Kerr-Newman black hole is found. This solution is a generalization of the previously known solution by Petrich, Shapiro and Teukolsky for a Kerr black hole. Our solution is not applicable for an extreme black hole due to violation of the test fluid approximation. We also present a stationary solution for a massless scalar field in the metric of a Kerr-Newman naked singularity.
This paper deals with the study of the accretion of dark energy with equation of state $p=wρ$ onto Kerr-Newman black holes. We have obtained that when $w>-1$ the mass and specific angular momentum increase, and that whereas the specific angular momentum increases up to a given plateau, the mass grows up unboundedly. On the regime where the dominant energy condition is violated our model predicts a steady decreasing of mass and angular momentum of black holes as phantom energy is being accreted. Masses and and angular momenta of all black holes tend to zero when one approaches the big rip. The …
In a previous paper we have written down equations describing steady-state, optically thin, advection-dominated accretion onto a Kerr black hole (Gammie and Popham 1997, hereafter Paper I). In this paper we survey the numerical solutions to these equations. We find that the temperature and density of the gas in the inner part of the accretion flow depend strongly on the black hole spin parameter $a$. The rate of angular momentum accretion is also shown to depend on $a$; for $a$ greater than an equilibrium spin parameter $a_{eq}$ the black hole is de-spun by the accretion flow. We also investig…
Dominant processes of neutrino production and neutrino-induced \ep-pair production are examined in the model of a disk hyper-accreting onto a Kerr black hole. The efficiency of plasma production by a neutrino flux from the disk, obtained for the both cases of presence and absence of a magnetic field, is found to be no more than several tenths of percent and, therefore, not enough for the origin of cosmological gamma-ray bursts.
We explore isothermal shock formation in non-equatorial, adiabatic accretion flows onto a rotating black hole, with possible application to some active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The isothermal shock jump conditions as well as the regularity condition, previously developed for one-dimensional (1D) flows in the equatorial plane, are extended to two-dimensional (2D), non-equatorial flows, to explore possible geometrical effects. The basic hydrodynamic equations with these conditions are self-consistently solved in the context of general relativity to explore the formation of stable isothermal shock…
We examine the possibility that hyper-accretion onto newly born, black holes occurs in highly intermittent, non-asymmetric fashion favorable to gravitational wave emission in a neutrino cooled disk. This picture of near-hole accretion is motivated by magneto-rotationally induced, ultra-relativistic disk dynamics in the region of the flow bounded from below by the marginally bound geodesic radius. For high spin values, a largely coherent magnetic field in this region has the dynamical implication of compact mass segregation at the displacement nodes of the non-axisymmetric, MRI modes. When neut…
