Neutrino Astrophysics in the cold: Amanda, Baikal and IceCube

This talk review status and results from the two presently operating underwater/ice neutrino telescopes, NT-200 in Lake Baikal and Amanda-II at the South Pole. It also gives a description of the design and the expected performance of Icecube, the next-generation neutrino telescope at South Pole.

The primary motivation for building neutrino telescopes is to open the road for neutrino astronomy, and to offer another observational window for the study of cosmic ray origins. Simulation of a Hybrid Optical/Radio/Acoustic Extension to IceCube for EeV Neutrino Detection

Astrophysical neutrinos at $\sim$EeV energies promise to be an interesting source for astrophysics and particle physics. Detecting the predicted cosmogenic (``GZK'') neutrinos at 10$^{16}$ - 10$^{20}$ eV would test models of cosmic ray production at these energies and probe particle physics at $\sim$100 TeV center-of-mass energy. While IceCube could detect $\sim$1 GZK event per year, it is necessary to detect 10 or more events per year in order to study temporal, angular, and spectral distributions. Neutrino Physics with the IceCube Detector

IceCube is a cubic kilometer neutrino telescope under construction at the South Pole. The primary goal is to discover astrophysical sources of high energy neutrinos. We describe the detector and present results on atmospheric muon neutrinos from 2006 data collected with nine detector strings.

Sensitivity of the IceCube Detector to Astrophysical Sources of High Energy Muon Neutrinos

We present the results of a Monte-Carlo study of the sensitivity of the planned IceCube detector to predicted fluxes of muon neutrinos at TeV to PeV energies. A complete simulation of the detector and data analysis is used to study the detector's capability to search for muon neutrinos from sources such as active galaxies and gamma-ray bursts. IceCube: The Cubic Kilometer Neutrino Telescope at the South Pole

Search for ultra high-energy neutrino induced reactions, as part of a comprehensive probe of the neutrino sky and also investigation of the particle nature of the dark matter, with unique sensitivity to cold dark matter particles are described. We present a description of the design, scientific motivation and goals, performance and status of the IceCube experiment.

IceCube : Toward a km^3 Neutrino Telescope

Since the end of the 2005-2006 austral summer, the IceCube detector consists of an array of 9 strings, deployed between 1450 m and 2450 m of depth and containing 540 digital optical sensors and 16 IceTop surface stations with 64 sensors. With the integrated AMANDA-II experiment this is the world's largest neutrino telescope in operation. The construction status of IceCube is presented along with an update on physics performance study for the detection of high energy neutrinos. The potential of the full km^3-scale telescope in the search for astrophysical sources is also addressed.

IceCube: The state of the art

In this paper we describe the performance of the 9 instrumented IceCube strings and 16 surface IceTop stations taking data at the Geographical South Pole after 2 deployment seasons. We will focus on the description of the array and on the construction and data analysis status. The expected full array performance is discussed and compared to other results for the relevant physics studies using high energy neutrinos for astrophysical neutrino searches.

Recent $ν$s from IceCube

IceCube is a 1 km$^3$ neutrino detector now being built at the South Pole. Its 4800 optical modules will detect Cherenkov radiation from charged particles produced in neutrino interactions. IceCube will search for neutrinos of astrophysical origin, with energies from 100 GeV up to $10^{19}$ eV. It will be able to separate $ν_e$, $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$. In addition to detecting astrophysical neutrinos, IceCube will also search for neutrinos from WIMP annihilation in the Sun and the Earth, look for low-energy (10 MeV) neutrinos from supernovae, and search for a host of exotic signatures. IceCube: A Cubic Kilometer Radiation Detector

IceCube is a 1 km^3 neutrino detector now being built at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. It consists of 4800 Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) which detect Cherenkov radiation from the charged particles produced in neutrino interactions. IceCube will observe astrophysical neutrinos with energies above about 100 GeV. IceCube will be able to separate ν_μ, ν_e and ν_τinteractions because of their different topologies. IceCube construction is currently 50% complete.
