We present a new approach to estimate the effect of the gluon shadowing in nucleus+nucleus collisions and its consequences on the J/psi production yield. Using kinematical information available from the measured J/psi production in proton+proton collisions at \sqrt s = 200 GeV, we build a Glauber Monte Carlo code which takes into account shadowing in two alternative ways: multiple scattering corrections or Q2 evolution of parton densities. We exploit the dependence of these different parameterizations to the J/psi transverse momentum and we give the first predictions on the resulting pT dependence of the nuclear modification factor in deuteron+gold collisions at the same energy.
We study medium modifications of J/psi production in cold nuclear media in deuterium-nucleus collisions. We discuss several parameterizations of the modifications of the parton densities in the nucleus, known as shadowing, an initial-state effect. We also include absorption of the produced J/psi by nucleons, a final-state effect. Both spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous shadowing and absorption are considered. We use the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions as a centrality measure. Results are presented for d+Au collisions at sqrt{S_{NN}} = 200 GeV and for d+Pb collisions at sqrt{S_…
We explore the effects of shadowing on inclusive J/psi and Upsilon(1S) production at AFTER@LHC. We also present the rates as a function of p_T and rapidity for p+Pb and Pb+p collisions in the proposed AFTER@LHC rapidity acceptance.
In the field theoretical Glauber-Gribov framework in the eikonal approximation, we show that, in hadron-nucleus collisions in the high-energy limit and under especific conditions, the rescattering contributions to the J/psi production cross-section vanish, leading to an A^1 dependence on the atomic number A -- except for nuclear effects in the nucleus structure function, the so-called shadowing. We show that the RHIC data on $J/ψ$ production in d-Au collisions can be described with nuclear shadowing alone (sigma_{abs} = 0). The corresponding results for Au-Au collisions are also presented and …
The gluon density in nuclei, G^A(x), is poorly constrained at all x from the current DIS and Drell-Yan data. In this paper, we point out that J/psi production measured in proton-nucleus collisions at sqrt(s)=38.8 GeV by the E866 collaboration puts stringent constraints on the x-dependence of the G^W/G^Be ratio in the x=0.02-0.1 range. The E866 data suggest a rather mild x-dependence of G^W/G^Be, and consequently tend to favour DS and HKM sets, rather than the DSg, EKS, and EPS parametrizations which exhibit a large shadowing and anti-shadowing.
We evaluate the Cold Nuclear Matter effects on J/psi production in pPb and PbPb collisions at the current LHC energy, taking into account the gluon shadowing and the nuclear absorption. We use the complete kinematics in the underlying 2 to 2 partonic process, namely $g+g \to \jpsi + g$ as expected from LO pQCD. The resulting shadowing is responsible for a large J/psi suppression in pPb and PbPb, and shows a strong rapidity dependence.
We investigate the cold nuclear matter effects on $J/ψ$ production, whose understanding is fundamental to study the quark-gluon plasma. Two of these effects are of particular relevance: the shadowing of the parton distributions and the nuclear absorption of the $c\bar{c}$ pair. If $J/ψ$'s are not produced {\it via} a $2 \to 1$ process as suggested by recent theoretical works, one has to modify accordingly the way to compute the nuclear shadowing. This naturally induces differences in the absorption cross-section fit to the data. A careful analysis of these differences however requires taking i…
Nuclear shadowing arises from multiple scattering of the hadronic fluctuations of the virtual photon in a nucleus. We predict different longitudinal and transverse shadowing and an A-dependence of R which can be up to a 50% effect. The possibility of detecting nuclear effects on R at HERA is discussed.
The effect of shadowing on the early state of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions and transverse energy production is discussed. Results are presented for RHIC Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and LHC Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.5$ TeV.
We study nuclear shadowing for transverse and longitudinal photons. The coherence length, which controls the onset of nuclear shadowing at small Bjorken-x is longer for longitudinal than for transverse photons. The light-cone Green function technique properly treats the finite coherence length in all multiple scattering terms. This is especially important in the region x>0.01, where most of the data exist. NMC data on shadowing in deep inelastic scattering are well reproduced in this approach. We also incorporate nonperturbative effects, in order to extrapolate this approach to small photon vi…
We suggest the measurement of Drell-Yan (DY) lepton pairs in p-Pb collisions at the LHC (sqrt(s)=5.02 TeV) in order to disentangle the relative contributions of shadowing and coherent energy loss in quarkonium production off nuclei. The nuclear modification of low mass DY production is computed at NLO using various sets of nuclear parton densities. It is then observed that shadowing effects strongly cancel out in the J/psi over DY suppression ratio R_{pA}^{J/psi}(y) / R_{pA}^{DY}(y), unlike the effect of coherent energy loss. Such a measurement could be performed at forward rapidity by the ALI…
The transverse mass spectra of J/psi and psi' mesons and Omega hyperons produced in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies are discussed within a statistical model used successfully for the interpretation of the SPS results. The comparison of the presented model with the future RHIC data should serve as a further crucial test of the hypothesis of statistical production of charmonia at hadronization. Finally, in case of validity, the approach should allow to estimate the mean transverse flow velocity at the quark gluon plasma hadronization.
We propose a model of suppression of $π^0$'s based on two different effects: at low $p_T$ we take into account the shadowing corrections, which are non-linear and essential for the description of the inclusive spectra, while at large $p_T$ the suppression is produced through the interaction of the large $p_T$ pion with the dense medium created in the collision. The main features of the data on $AuAu$ and $dAu$ collisions at RHIC energies are reproduced both at mid and at forward rapidities.
Within a perturbative scalar QED model recently considered by Brodsky et al., we study how leading-twist Coulomb rescatterings affect the Drell-Yan cross section at small x = x_{target}, and compare to the case of deep inelastic scattering at small x_{B}. We show that in the range where the transverse momentum transferred to the target is large compared to its minimal value $\sim \morder{x}$, Coulomb rescatterings affect the DIS cross section but not the Drell-Yan production rate. This illustrates that the leading-twist parton distribution functions become non-universal when cross sections whi…
Stringent physical constraints relate the $J/ψ$ produced at a given transverse momentum $p_T$ to the Bjorken-$x$ of the initial gluons. We present a new approach which takes them into account in order to explicitely investigate the $p_T$-dependence of the shadowing effect on the $J/ψ$ production. Using the $J/ψ$ rapidity and $p_T$ spectra extracted from $\sqrt{s}=200\mathrm{GeV}$ p + p data from PHENIX, we build a Glauber Monte-Carlo code which includes shadowing in two alternative ways: multiple scattering corrections or $Q^2$ evolution of parton densities. We present our results in d + Au co…
We summarize what is known about the transverse spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleon and its x-dependence from exclusive J/psi photo/electroproduction in e-p fixed-target and collider experiments (HERA H1 and ZEUS). This information can be used to predict the impact parameter dependence of the cross section for certain hard QCD processes (dijet production) in pbar-p and p-p collisions at the Tevatron and LHC.
Motivated by the recent results for DIS off nuclei from the HERMES experiment we have performed a systematic study of shadowing for transverse and longitudinal photons. We found that the coherence length which controls the onset of nuclear shadowing at small x_{Bj} is much longer for longitudinal than transverse photons, and is much shorter for shadowing of gluons. The light-cone Green function approach we apply properly treats shadowing in the transition region x_{Bj}>0.01. It also incorporates the nonperturbative effects and is legitimate at small Q^2. We calculate nuclear shadowing and comp…
The transverse mass spectra of Omega, J/psi and psi' in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 AGeV are studied within a hydrodynamical model of the quark gluon plasma expansion and hadronization. The model reproduces the existing data with the common hadronization parameters: temperature T=T_H = 170 MeV and average collective transverse velocity v_T = 0.2.
We show that, contrary to recent claims, the $J/ψ$ suppression resulting from its interaction with comovers does not saturate at large transverse energy $E_T$. On the contrary, it shows a characteristic structure - change of curvature near the knee of the $E_T$ distribution - which is due to the $E_T$ (or multiplicity) fluctuation, and agrees with recent experimental results.
The NRQCD factorization approach for quarkonium production at hadron colliders is reviewed. The prediction of J/psi and psi(2S) transverse polarization at large transverse momentum is confronted with recent experimental data, and potential shortcomings of the theoretical analysis are discussed.
Within the framework of the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach, we compute the cross section and polarization of prompt J/psi produced from proton-proton collisions at the center-of-momentum energy sqrt{s}=200 GeV. We present the transverse-momentum distribution in the forward-rapidity region 1.2 < |y| < 2.2 and the rapidity distribution over the transverse-momentum range 2 GeV < p_T < 20 GeV. The perturbative contributions are computed at leading order in the strong coupling constant. We predict slight transverse polarization of J/psi in the forward-rapidity region, while that for the…
The effect of shadowing on the early state of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated along with transverse energy and hard process production, specifically Drell-Yan, $J/ψ$, and $Υ$ production. We choose several parton distributions and parameterizations of nuclear shadowing, as well as the spatial dependence of shadowing, to study the influence of shadowing on relevant observables. Results are presented for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.5$ TeV.
Transverse polarization of ${}^3 S_1$ charmonium states, produced directly in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at asymptotically large transverse momentum p_t, has emerged as the most prominent test of color octet contributions and spin symmetry in quarkonium production. We present predictions for the polar angle distribution at moderate values of p_t \sim 4 - 20 GeV, covered by the Tevatron Run I data. We update the fits of NRQCD matrix elements and discuss their theoretical uncertainties. With our best fit values, no transverse polarization is expected at p_t \sim 5 GeV, but the angular distribution is…
We provide predictions for the J/psi coherent production in the peripheral heavy ion collisions at LHC and at RHIC using the leading twist model of nuclear shadowing based on the QCD factorization theorem for diffraction and the HERA hard diffraction data. We demonstrate that for the LHC kinematics this model leads to a bump-shape distribution in rapidity which is suppressed overall as compared to the expectations of the color transparency regime by a factor 6. This is significantly larger suppression than that expected within the impact parameter eikonal model. Thus we show that the interacti…
Coherence effects are important in the description of collisions with extended objects as nuclei. At fixed target energies and small x_F, the coherence length of the fluctuation containing the $c\bar c$ is small and the usual nuclear absorption model is valid. However, at higher energies and/or x_F the nucleus is seen as a whole by the fluctuation. In this case, the total, not the absorptive, $c\bar c-N$ cross section controls the suppression and also shadowing of gluons appears. We propose that the growth of the coherence length can explain the x_F-dependence of present experimental data. For…
We propose the measurement of the decay angular distribution of leptons from J/Psi's produced at high transverse momentum balanced by a photon [or gluon] in hadronic collisions. The polar and azimuthal angular distribution are calculated in the color singlet model (CSM). It is shown that the general structure of the decay lepton distribution is controlled by four invariant structure functions, which are functions of the transverse momentum and the rapidity of the J/Psi. We found that two of these structure functions [the longitudinal and transverse interference structure functions] are identic…
We study the production of the D and J/psi mesons from deconfined quark matter at CERN SPS energy. Using the MICOR microscopical coalescence model we determine the transverse momentum spectra of these charm mesons. We predict the slopes of their transverse momentum spectra in Pb+Pb collision at 158 GeV/nucleon beam energy.
The polarization of prompt J/psi at the Tevatron is calculated within the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization framework. The contribution from radiative decays of P-wave charmonium states decreases, but does not eliminate, the transverse polarization at large transverse momentum. The prediction agrees with measurements from the CDF collaboration at intermediate values of p_T, but disagrees at the large values of p_T measured.
We present baseline calculations of initial-state shadowing and final-state absorption effects on J/psi production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We show predictions for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at \sqrt{S_{NN}}=200 GeV and Cu+Cu collisions at \sqrt{S_{NN}} = 62 GeV as a function of the rapidity, y, and the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, N_{\rm coll}.
The charmonium yields are expected to be considerably suppressed if a deconfined medium is formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. In addition, the bottomonium states, with the possible exception of the Upsilon(1S) state, are also expected to be suppressed in heavy-ion collisions. However, in proton-nucleus collisions the quarkonium production cross sections, even those of the Upsilon(1S), are also suppressed. These "cold nuclear matter" effects need to be accounted for before signals of the high density QCD medium can be identified in the measurements made in nucleus-nucleus collisions. W…
Nuclear shadowing and color glass condensate are possible only at sufficiently small x where parton clouds of different nucleons overlap in the longitudinal direction. Another condition vital for these effect, an overlap of partons in impact parameters, is not easy to fulfill for gluons which are located within small spots, as follows from the observed weakness of diffractive gluon radiation (smallness of the triple-Pomeron coupling). The predicted weakness of the leading twist gluon shadowing has been confirmed recently by data for J/Psi production and Cronin effect in d-Au collisions at RHIC…
We consider the J/psi photo-production data collected at HERA in the light of next-to-leading order predictions for the color-singlet yield and polarization. We find that, while the shapes of inclusive distributions in the transverse momentum and inelasticity are well reproduced, the experimental rates are larger than those given by the color-singlet contribution alone. Furthermore, the next-to-leading order calculation predicts the J/psi's to be mostly longitudinally polarized at high transverse momentum in contrast with the trend of the preliminary data from the ZEUS collaboration.
We have carried out a wide study of Cold Nuclear Matter (CNM) effects on J/Psi production in d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. We have studied the effects of three different gluon-shadowing parametrisations, using the usual simplified kinematics for which the momentum of the gluon recoiling against the J/Psi is neglected as well as an exact kinematics for a 2 -> 2 process, namely g+g -> J/psi+g as expected from LO pQCD. We have shown that the rapidity distribution of the nuclear modification factor R_dAu, and particularly its anti-shadowing peak, is systematically shifted…
In the framework of kt-factorization approach, the production and polarization of prompt psi(2S) mesons in pp collisions at the LHC energies is studied. Our consideration is based on the non-relativistic QCD formalism for bound states and off-shell amplitudes for hard partonic subprocesses. The transverse momentum dependent (unintegrated) gluon densities in a proton were derived from Ciafaloni-Catani-Fiorani-Marchesini evolution equation or, alternatively, were chosen in accordance with Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. The non-perturbative color-octet matrix elements were first deduced from …
The observed J/psi suppression in Pb+Pb collisions shows a drop at those large values of the transverse energy E_T which arise from fluctuations. The validity of existing models for J/psi suppression can be extended into this domain of E_T by introducing an ad hoc factor proportional to E_T. We propose a formalism in which the influence of E_T fluctuations on the J/psi suppression can be calculated and discuss the conditions under which the ad hoc factor is obtained.
The polar and azimuthal angular distributions for the lepton pair arising from the decay of a J/psi meson produced at transverse momentum p_T balanced by a photon [or gluon] in hadronic collisions are calculated in the color singlet model (CSM). It is shown that the general structure of the decay lepton distribution is controlled by four invariant structure functions, which are functions of the transverse momentum and the rapidity of the J/psi. We found that two of these structure functions [the longitudinal and transverse interference structure functions] are identical in the CSM. Analytical …
CERN collaboration NA50 has measured charmonium and Drell-Yan dimuon production in Pb+Pb collisions. Parton scattering broadens the transverse momentum, p_T, distributions for these processes. We predict that the average p_T^{2} will flatten in Pb+Pb collisions as a function of the neutral transverse energy of hadrons, E_T, in contrast to the almost-linear rise seen in S+U - psi +X. If seen, such a flattening will support hadronic explanations of charmonium suppression. Figures 2 and 5 are improved and numerous typographical errors are corrected.
In the rest frame of the nucleus, shadowing is due to hadronic fluctuations of the incoming virtual photon, which interact with the nucleons. We expand these fluctuations in a basis of eigenstates of interaction and take only the $q\bar q$ component of the hadronic structure of the photon into account. We use a representation in which the $q\bar q$-pair has a definite transverse size. Starting from the Dirac equation, we develop a path integral approach that allows to sum all multiple scattering terms and accounts for fluctuations of the transverse size of the pair, as well as for the finite l…
The polarization of prompt J/psi at the Fermilab Tevatron is calculated within the nonrelativistic QCD factorization framework. The contribution from radiative decays of P-wave charmonium states decreases, but does not eliminate, the transverse polarization at large transverse momentum. The angular distribution parameter alpha for leptonic decays of the J/ψis predicted to increase from near 0 at p_T = 5 GeV to about 0.5 at p_T = 20 GeV. The prediction is consistent with measurements by the CDF Collaboration at intermediate values of p_T, but disagrees by about 3 standard deviations at the larg…
We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distributions affect production of high transverse momentum hadrons in deuteron-nucleus collisions. We calculate the charged hadron spectra to leading order using standard fragmentation functions and shadowing parameterizations. We obtain the d+Au to pp ratio both in minimum bias collisions and as a function of centrality. The minimum bias results agree reasonably well with the BRAHMS data while the calculated centrality dependence underestimates the data and is a stronger function of p_T than the data indicate.
I review the color dipole formulation of heavy quark production in the light of recent RHIC data. Since charm and bottom production directly probe the gluon density, these processes allow one to study shadowing and parton saturation at RHIC and LHC. The dipole approach provides a convenient framework to calculate these nuclear effects. I present numerical results for open charm and bottom production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions and discuss transverse momentum broadening of heavy quarkonia.
The associated production of J/psi + gamma at the LHC is studied within the NRQCD framework. The signal we focus on is the production of a J/psi and an isolated photon produced back-to-back, with their transverse momenta balanced. It is shown that even for very large values of transverse momentum (pT of the order of 50 GeV) the dominant contribution to this process is not fragmentation. This is because of the fact that fragmentation-type contributions to the cross-section come from only a q q(bar) initial state, which is suppressed at the LHC. We identify gg-initiated diagrams higher-order in …
We investigate the cos 2 phi azimuthal asymmetry in Drell--Yan and J/psi production from unpolarized ppbar scattering at GSI-HESR energies. The contribution to this asymmetry arising from the leading-twist Boer-Mulders function h_1^perp(x, k_T^2), which describes a correlation between the transverse momentum and the transverse spin of quarks in an unpolarized hadron, is explicitly evaluated, and predictions for the GSI-HESR kinematic regime are presented. We show that the cos 2 phi asymmetry is quite sizable both on the J/psi peak and in the Drell-Yan continuum region. Therefore these processe…
We have carried out a wide study of shadowing and antishadowing effects on \jpsi\ production in \dAu\ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. We have studied the effects of three different gluon nPDF sets, using the exact kinematics for a $2\to 2$ process, namely $g+g\to J/ψ+g$ as expected from LO pQCD. We have computed the rapidity dependence of \RCP\ and $R_{d\rm Au}$ for the different centrality classes of the PHENIX data. For mid rapidities, we have also computed the transverse-momentum dependence of the nuclear modification factor, which cannot be predicted with the usual $2\to 1$ simplifi…
We study the clustering of colour strings in the transverse plane of nucleus-nucleus collisions and argue that deconfinement sets in when the string density within a cluster reaches a critical value. We show that this implies a minimal cluster size at the onset of deconfinement, which in turn results in discontinuous behaviour for J/Psi suppression.
A recently developed statistical coalescence model of the J/psi production is presented. The NA50 data on the J/psi suppression pattern and the transverse mass spectra in Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS are analyzed. The model predictions for the RHIC energies are formulated. The measurements of J/psi in Au+Au collisions at RHIC are crucial for disentangling the different scenarios of charmonia formation.
The experimental ratio of $ψ'$ to $J/ψ$ is approximately a constant in $pA$ collisions, but decreases as the transverse energy increases in nucleus-nucleus collisions. These peculiar features can be explained as arising from approximately the same $c \bar c$-baryon absorption cross section for $ψ'$ and $J/ψ$ but greater disruption probabilities for $ψ'$ than for $J/ψ$ due to the interaction of the $c\bar c$ system with soft particles produced in baryon-baryon collisions.
In this work, we present more detail of the calculation on the NLO QCD corrections to polarization of direct J/psi production via color singlet at Tevatron and LHC, as well as the results for Upsilon for the first time. Our results show that the J/psi polarization status drastically changes from transverse polarization dominant at LO into longitudinal polarization dominant in the whole range of the transverse momentum $p_t$ of J/psi when the NLO corrections are counted. For Upsilon production, the p_t distribution of the polarization status behaves almost the same as that for J/psi except that…
A collision of a light meson and a charmonium produces quarks and antiquarks first, then the charm quark fragments into a charmed hadron, and finally three or more mesons are produced. This is the mechanism that we consider and propose to understand the prompt-J/psi nuclear modification factor in the range of J/psi transverse momentum from 10 GeV/c to 18 GeV/c, as measured by the CMS Collaboration and the ATLAS Collaboration. Unpolarized cross sections are derived and calculated for the reactions pion+charmonium ->H_c+X with H_c being a charmed meson. Numerical cross sections are parametrized …
One observes strong suppression effects for hard probes, e.g. the production of J/psi or high-pT particles, in nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at RHIC. Surprisingly, the magnitude of the suppression is quite similar to that at SPS. In order to establish whether these features arise due to the presence of a thermalized system of quarks and gluons formed in the course of the collision, one should investigate the impact of suppression mechanisms which do not explicitly involve such a state. We calculate shadowing for gluons in the Glauber-Gribov theory and propose a model invoking a rapidity-depe…
We give the detailed analysis of effects of flavor dependence of average transverse quark momentum inside a meson on J/psi --> P and Υ--> Bc transition form factors and two-body weak hadronic decays of J/psi and Υemploying the factorization scheme. We predict the branching ratios of semileptonic and nonleptonic weak decays of J/psi and Υmesons in Cabibbo-angle-enhanced and Cabibbo-angle-suppressed modes.
Prediction for transverse energy dependence of $J/ψ$ to Drell-Yan ratio in Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy was obtained in a model which assume 100% absorption of $J/ψ$ above a threshold density. The threshold density was obtained by fitting the NA50 data on $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energy. At RHIC energy, hard processes may be important. Prediction of $J/ψ$ suppression with and without hard processes were obtained. With hard processes included, $J/ψ$'s are strongly suppressed.
We evaluate the transverse momentum spectrum of J/Psi (up to semi-hard momenta) in pA and AA collisions taking into account only the initial state effects, but resumming them to all orders in α_s^2 A^{1/3}. In our previous papers we noticed that cold nuclear matter effects alone could not explain the experimental data on rapidity and centrality dependencies of the J/Psi yield in AA collisions indicating the existence of an additional suppression mechanism. Our present calculations indicate that the discrepancy persists and even increases at semi-hard transverse momenta, implying a significant …
We study Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production in proton(deuterium)-nucleus and in nucleus-nucleus collisions within the light-cone color dipole formalism. This approach is especially suitable for predicting nuclear effects in the DY cross section for heavy ion collisions, as it provides the impact parameter dependence of nuclear shadowing and transverse momentum broadening, quantities that are not available from the standard parton model. For p(D)+A collisions we calculate nuclear shadowing and investigate nuclear modification of the DY transverse momentum distribution at RHIC and LHC for kinema…
We discuss the transverse momentum distribution of $Z^0$ and $W^\pm$ gauge bosons at the LHC with $\sqrt s=14$ TeV for pp collisions and with $\sqrt s=5.5$ TeV for Pb+Pb collisions. Effects of power corrections and shadowing are also studied.
We study J/psi suppression in AB collisions assuming that the charmonium states evolve from small, color transparent configurations. Their interaction with nucleons and nonequilibrated, secondary hadrons is simulated using the microscopic model UrQMD. The Drell-Yan lepton pair yield and the J/psi/Drell-Yan ratio are calculated as a function of the neutral transverse energy in Pb+Pb collisions at 160 GeV and found to be in reasonable agreement with existing data.
Nuclear effects for J/Psi production in pA collisions are controlled by the coherence and color transparency effects. Color transparency onsets when the time of formation of the charmonium wave function becomes longer than the inter-nucleon spacing. In this energy regime the effective break-up cross section for a c-cbar dipole depends on energy and nuclear path length, and agrees well with data from fixed target experiments, both in magnitude and energy dependence. At higher energies of RHIC and LHC coherence in c-cbar pair production leads to charm quark shadowing which is a complement to the…
The DELPHI Collaboration has recently reported the measurement of J/Psi production in photon-photon collisions at LEP II. These newly available data provide an additional proof of the importance of colored c bar{c} pairs for the production of charmonium because these data can only be explained by considering resolved photon processes. We show here that the inclusion of color octet contributions to the J/Psi production in the framework of the color evaporation model is able to reproduce this data. In particular, the transverse-momentum distribution of the J/Psi mesons is well described by this …
We discuss the possibility of a direct access to transversity distributions by measuring the double transverse spin asymmetry A_TT in p pbar --> J/Psi + X --> l^- l^+ + X processes at future GSI-HESR experiments with polarized protons and anti-protons. In the J/Psi resonance production region, with 30 < s < 45 GeV^2, both the cross-section and A_TT are expected to be sufficiently large to allow a measurement of h_1^q(x,M^2); numerical estimates are given.
We show a new physical phenomenon expected for the ratio R_{pA} of the unintegrated gluon distribution of a nucleus over the unintegrated gluon distribution of a proton scaled up by the atomic factor A^{1/3} in the fluctuation-dominated (diffusive scaling) region at high energy. We calculate the dependence of R_{pA} on the atomic number A, the rapidity Y and the transverse gluon momentum k_{\perp}. We find that R_{pA} exhibits an increasing gluon shadowing with growing rapidity, approaching 1/A^{1/3} at asymptotic rapidities which means total gluon shadowing, due to the effect of gluon number …
Within the framework of the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization approach, we compute the polarization of prompt J/psi produced at the Brookhaven's Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider from proton-proton collisions at the center-of-momentum energy sqrt{s}=200 GeV. The perturbative contributions are computed at leading order in the strong coupling constant. The prediction reveals that the color-singlet contribution severely underestimates the PHENIX preliminary data for the differential cross section integrated over the rapidity range |y|<0.35 and its contribution is strongly transversely polar…
