We present a simple construction that maps quantum circuits to graphs and vice-versa. Inspired by the results of D.A. Lidar linking the Ising partition function with quadratically signed weight enumerators (QWGTs), we also present a BQP-complete problem for the additive approximation of a function over hypergraphs related to the generating function of Eulerian subgraphs for ordinary graphs. We discuss connections with the Ising partition function.
We study the complexity of approximately evaluating the Ising and Tutte partition functions with complex parameters. Our results are partly motivated by the study of the quantum complexity classes BQP and IQP. Recent results show how to encode quantum computations as evaluations of classical partition functions. These results rely on interesting and deep results about quantum computation in order to obtain hardness results about the difficulty of (classically) evaluating the partition functions for certain fixed parameters. The motivation for this paper is to study more comprehensively the com…
We investigate quantum computational complexity of calculating partition functions of Ising models. We construct a quantum algorithm for an additive approximation of Ising partition functions on square lattices. To this end, we utilize the overlap mapping developed by Van den Nest, Dür, and Briegel [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 117207 (2007)] and its interpretation through measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC). We specify an algorithmic domain, on which the proposed algorithm works, and an approximation scale, which determines the accuracy of the approximation. We show that the proposed algorit…
We propose an efficient algorithm for partitioning Pauli strings into subgroups, which can be simultaneously measured in a single quantum circuit. Our partitioning algorithm drastically reduces the total number of measurements in a variational quantum eigensolver for a quantum chemistry, one of the most promising applications of quantum computing. The algorithm is based on the Ising model optimization problem, which can be quickly solved using an Ising machine. We develop an algorithm that is applicable to problems with sizes larger than the maximum number of variables that an Ising machine ca…
We compute the expected randomized benchmarking sequence fidelity for a system subject to Gaussian time-correlated noise. For single qubit benchmarking we show that the expected sequence fidelity is given by the partition function of a long-range coupled spin-one Ising model, with each site in the Ising model corresponding to a free evolution interval. For d-state systems, the expected sequence fidelity is given by an Ising-like model partition function whose site variables are given by the weights of the adjoint representation of SU(d). A high effective temperature expansion for the partition…
We exploit a recently constructed mapping between quantum circuits and graphs in order to prove that circuits corresponding to certain planar graphs can be efficiently simulated classically. The proof uses an expression for the Ising model partition function in terms of quadratically signed weight enumerators (QWGTs), which are polynomials that arise naturally in an expansion of quantum circuits in terms of rotations involving Pauli matrices. We combine this expression with a known efficient classical algorithm for the Ising partition function of any planar graph in the absence of an external …
We present an algorithm to compute the number of solutions of the (constrained) number partitioning problem. A concrete implementation of the algorithm on an Ising-type quantum computer is given.
We present elementary mappings between classical lattice models and quantum circuits. These mappings provide a general framework to obtain efficiently simulable quantum gate sets from exactly solvable classical models. For example, we recover and generalize the simulability of Valiant's match-gates by invoking the solvability of the free-fermion eight-vertex model. Our mappings furthermore provide a systematic formalism to obtain simple quantum algorithms to approximate partition functions of lattice models in certain complex-parameter regimes. For example, we present an efficient quantum algo…
It is shown that the canonical problem of classical statistical thermodynamics, the computation of the partition function, is in the case of +/-J Ising spin glasses a particular instance of certain simple sums known as quadratically signed weight enumerators (QWGTs). On the other hand it is known that quantum computing is polynomially equivalent to classical probabilistic computing with an oracle for estimating QWGTs. This suggests a connection between the partition function estimation problem for spin glasses and quantum computation. This connection extends to knots and graph theory via the e…
Studying the zeroes of partition functions in the space of complex control parameters allows to understand formally how critical behavior of a many-body system can arise in the thermodynamic limit despite various no-go theorems for finite systems. In this work we propose protocols that can be realized in quantum simulators to measure the location of complex partition function zeroes of classical Ising models. The protocols are solely based on the implementation of simple two-qubit gates, local spin rotations, and projective measurements along two orthogonal quantization axes. Besides presentin…
Two objects can be distinguished if they have different measurable properties. Thus, distinguishability depends on the Physics of the objects. In considering graphs, we revisit the Ising model as a framework to define physically meaningful spectral invariants. In this context, we introduce a family of refinements of the classical spectrum and consider the quantum partition function. We demonstrate that the energy spectrum of the quantum Ising Hamiltonian is a stronger invariant than the classical one without refinements. For the purpose of implementing the related physical systems, we perform …
A scheme for measuring complex temperature partition functions of Ising models is introduced. In the context of ordered qubit registers this scheme finds a natural translation in terms of global operations, and single particle measurements on the edge of the array. Two applications of this scheme are presented. First, through appropriate Wick rotations, those amplitudes can be analytically continued to yield estimates for partition functions of Ising models. Bounds on the estimation error, valid with high confidence, are provided through a central-limit theorem, which validity extends beyond t…
Small numbers of qubits are one of the primary constraints on the near-term deployment of advantageous quantum computing. To mitigate this constraint, techniques have been developed to break up a large quantum computation into smaller computations. While this work is sometimes called circuit knitting or divide and quantum we generically refer to it as circuit cutting (CC). Much of the existing work has focused on the development of more efficient circuit cutting schemes, leaving open questions on the limits of what theoretically optimal schemes can achieve. We develop bounds by breaking up pos…
Instantaneous quantum polynomial-time (IQP) computation is a class of quantum computation consisting only of commuting two-qubit gates and is not universal in the sense of standard quantum computation. Nevertheless, it has been shown that if there is a classical algorithm that can simulate IQP efficiently, the polynomial hierarchy (PH) collapses at the third level, which is highly implausible. However, the origin of the classical intractability is still less understood. Here we establish a relationship between IQP and computational complexity of the partition functions of Ising models. We appl…
We give efficient quantum algorithms to estimate the partition function of (i) the six vertex model on a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice, (ii) the Ising model with magnetic fields on a planar graph, (iii) the Potts model on a quasi 2D square lattice, and (iv) the Z_2 lattice gauge theory on a three-dimensional square lattice. Moreover, we prove that these problems are BQP-complete, that is, that estimating these partition functions is as hard as simulating arbitrary quantum computation. The results are proven for a complex parameter regime of the models. The proofs are based on a mapping r…
We prove that the 2D Ising model is complete in the sense that the partition function of any classical q-state spin model (on an arbitrary graph) can be expressed as a special instance of the partition function of a 2D Ising model with complex inhomogeneous couplings and external fields. In the case where the original model is an Ising or Potts-type model, we find that the corresponding 2D square lattice requires only polynomially more spins w.r.t the original one, and we give a constructive method to map such models to the 2D Ising model. For more general models the overhead in system size ma…
We show that the two dimensional Ising model is complete, in the sense that the partition function of any lattice model on any graph is equal to the partition function of the 2D Ising model with complex coupling. The latter model has all its spin-spin coupling equal to iπ/4 and all the parameters of the original model are contained in the local magnetic fields of the Ising model. This result has already been derived by using techniques from quantum information theory and by exploiting the universality of cluster states. Here we do not use the quantum formalism and hence make the completeness r…
We study the problem of approximating the Ising model partition function with complex parameters on bounded degree graphs. We establish a deterministic polynomial-time approximation scheme for the partition function when the interactions and external fields are absolutely bounded close to zero. Furthermore, we prove that for this class of Ising models the partition function does not vanish. Our algorithm is based on an approach due to Barvinok for approximating evaluations of a polynomial based on the location of the complex zeros and a technique due to Patel and Regts for efficiently computin…
We present an algorithm to approximate partition functions of 3-body classical Ising models on two-dimensional lattices of arbitrary genus, in the real-temperature regime. Even though our algorithm is purely classical, it is designed by exploiting a connection to topological quantum systems, namely the color codes. The algorithm performance is exponentially better than other approaches which employ mappings between partition functions and quantum state overlaps. In addition, our approach gives rise to a protocol for quantum simulation of such Ising models by simply measuring local observables …
We study mappings between distinct classical spin systems that leave the partition function invariant. As recently shown in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 110501 (2008)], the partition function of the 2D square lattice Ising model in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field, can specialize to the partition function of any Ising system on an arbitrary graph. In this sense the 2D Ising model is said to be "complete". However, in order to obtain the above result, the coupling strengths on the 2D lattice must assume complex values, and thus do not allow for a physical interpretation. Here we show h…
Optimally mapping a parallel application to compute and communication resources is increasingly important as both system size and heterogeneity increase. A similar mapping problem exists in gate-based quantum computing where the objective is to map tasks to gates in a topology-aware fashion. This is an NP-complete graph isomorphism problem, and existing task assignment approaches are either heuristic or based on physical optimization algorithms, providing different speed and solution quality trade-offs. Ising machines such as quantum and digital annealers have recently become available and off…
We provide Ising formulations for many NP-complete and NP-hard problems, including all of Karp's 21 NP-complete problems. This collects and extends mappings to the Ising model from partitioning, covering and satisfiability. In each case, the required number of spins is at most cubic in the size of the problem. This work may be useful in designing adiabatic quantum optimization algorithms.
A linear-time algorithm is presented for the construction of the Gibbs distribution of configurations in the Ising model, on a quantum computer. The algorithm is designed so that each run provides one configuration with a quantum probability equal to the corresponding thermodynamic weight. The partition function is thus approximated efficiently. The algorithm neither suffers from critical slowing down, nor gets stuck in local minima. The algorithm can be A linear-time algorithm is presented for the construction of the Gibbs distribution of configurations in the Ising model, on a quantum comput…
