We calculate the radiation spectrum and its time variability of the black hole accretion disk-corona system based on the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation. In explaining the spectral properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), it is often assumed that they consist of a geometrically thin, optically thick disk and hot, optically thin corona surrounding the thin disk. As for a model of the corona, we adopt the simulation data of three-dimensional, non-radiative MHD accretion flows calculated by Kato and coworkers, while for a thin disk we assume a standard type disk. We perform Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations in the corona, taking into account the Compton scattering of soft photons from the thin disk by hot thermal electrons and coronal irradiation heating of the thin disk, which emits blackbody radiation. By adjusting the density parameter of the MHD coronal flow, we can produce the emergent spectra which are consistent with those of typical Seyfert galaxies. Moreover, we find rapid time variability in X-ray emission spectra, originating from the density fluctuation produced by the magnetorotational instability in the MHD corona. The features of reflection component including iron fluorescent line emission are also briefly discussed.
Solar prominences are cool 10$^4$ Kelvin plasma clouds supported in the surrounding 10$^6$ Kelvin coronal plasma by as-yet undetermined mechanisms. Observations from \emph{Hinode} show fine-scale threadlike structures oscillating in the plane of the sky with periods of several minutes. We suggest these transverse magnetohydrodynamic waves may represent Alfvén waves propagating on coronal magnetic field lines and these may play a role in heating the corona.
Observations of transversal coronal loop oscillations very often show the excitation and damping of oscillations in groups of coronal loops rather than in individual and isolated structures. We present results on the oscillatory properties (periods, damping rates, and spatial distribution of perturbations) for resonantly damped oscillations in a system of two inhomogeneous coronal slabs and compare them to the properties found in single slab loop models. A system of two identical coronal loops is modeled, in Cartesian geometry, as being composed by two density enhancements. The linear magnetoh…
White-light observations of the solar corona show that there are two characteristic types of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) in terms of speed-height profiles: so-called fast CMEs that attain high speeds low in the corona and slow CMEs that gradually accelerate from low initial speeds. Low and Zhang (2002) have recently proposed that fast and slow CMEs result from initial states with magnetic configurations characterized by normal prominences (NPs) and inverse prominences (IPs), respectively. To test their theory, we employed a two-dimensional, time-dependent, resistive magnetohydrodynamic code …
We present a series of models for the plasma properties along open magnetic flux tubes rooted in solar coronal holes, streamers, and active regions. These models represent the first self-consistent solutions that combine: (1) chromospheric heating driven by an empirically guided acoustic wave spectrum, (2) coronal heating from Alfven waves that have been partially reflected, then damped by anisotropic turbulent cascade, and (3) solar wind acceleration from gradients of gas pressure, acoustic wave pressure, and Alfven wave pressure. The only input parameters are the photospheric lower boundary …
We present a numerical study of an idealized magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) configuration consisting of a planar wake flow embedded into a three-dimensional (3D) sheared magnetic field. Our simulations investigate the possibility for in-situ development of large-scale compressive disturbances at cospatial current sheet -- velocity shear regions in the heliosphere. Using a linear MHD solver, we first systematically chart the destabilized wavenumbers, corresponding growth rates, and physical parameter ranges for dominant 3D sinuous-type instabilities in an equilibrium wake--current sheet system. Wake…
We carried out 2.5-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations to study the effects of magnetic diffusivity on magnetically driven mass accretion and jet formation. We found that (1) when the normalized magnetic diffusivity, is small, mass accretion and jet formation take place intermittently; (2) when diffusivity is middle, the system evolves toward a quasi-steady state; and the system evolves toward a quasi-steady state; and (3) when diffusivity is large, the accretion/mass outflow rate decreases with diffusivity and approaches 0. The results of these simulations indicate magnetic …
This paper presents an initial survey of the properties of accretion flows in the Kerr metric from three-dimensional, general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accretion tori. We consider three fiducial models of tori around rotating, both prograde and retrograde, and nonrotating black holes; these three fiducial models are also contrasted with axisymmetric simulations and a pseudo-Newtonian simulation with equivalent initial conditions to delineate the limitations of these approximations.
We present a detailed study of localised magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) instabilities occuring in two--dimensional magnetized accretion disks. We model axisymmetric MHD disk tori, and solve the equations governing a two--dimensional magnetized accretion disk equilibrium and linear wave modes about this equilibrium. We show the existence of novel MHD instabilities in these two--dimensional equilibria which do not occur in an accretion disk in the cylindrical limit. The disk equilibria are numerically computed by the FINESSE code. The stability of accretion disks is investigated analytically as wel…
Warped, precessing accretion discs appear in a range of astrophysical systems, for instance the X-ray binary Her X-1 and in the active nucleus of NGC4258. In a warped accretion disc there are horizontal pressure gradients that drive an epicyclic motion. We have studied the interaction of this epicyclic motion with the magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in numerical simulations. We find that the turbulent stress acting on the epicyclic motion is comparable in size to the stress that drives the accretion, however an important ingredient in the damping of the epicyclic motion is its parametric decay …
Observations are providing increasingly detailed quantitative information about the accretion flows that power such high energy systems as X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei. Analytic models of such systems must rely on assumptions such as regular flow geometry and a simple, parameterized stress. Global numerical simulations offer a way to investigate the basic physical dynamics of accretion flows without these assumptions. For black hole accretion studies one solves the equations of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. Magnetic fields are of fundamental importance to the structur…
Radiatively inefficient accretion flows onto black holes are unstable due to both an outwardly decreasing entropy (`convection') and an outwardly decreasing rotation rate (the `magnetorotational instability'; MRI). Using a linear magnetohydrodynamic stability analysis, we show that long-wavelength modes are primarily destabilized by the entropy gradient and that such `convective' modes transport angular momentum inwards. Moreover, the stability criteria for the convective modes are the standard Hoiland criteria of hydrodynamics. By contrast, shorter wavelength modes are primarily destabilized …
A complete analytical and numerical treatment of all magnetohydrodynamic waves and instabilities for radially stratified, magnetized accretion disks is presented. The instabilities are a possible source of anomalous transport. While recovering results on known hydrodynamicand both weak- and strong-field magnetohydrodynamic perturbations, the full magnetohydrodynamic spectra for a realistic accretion disk model demonstrates a much richer variety of instabilities accessible to the plasma than previously realized. We show that both weakly and strongly magnetized accretion disks are prone to stron…
Recent work on the structure of magnetic fields in a turbulent medium gives predictions for the properties of the magnetic flux tubes as a function of the Mach number and scale of the turbulence, and the resistivity and viscosity of the fluid. Here I discuss the implications of this work for accretion disks. I show that although accretion disk flux tubes are usually almost completely evacuated, they are nevertheless less buoyant than previous estimates have suggested. I also note that vertical magnetic flux tends to be ejected from the outer edge of accretion disks, so evidence for continued m…
The theory of magnetically accelerated outflows and jets from accretion disks is reviewed at an introductory level, with special attention to problem areas like the launching conditions of the flow at the disk surface, stability of the magnetic field, and collimation mechanisms. This text will appear in R.A.M.J. Wijers, M.B. Davies and C.A. Tout, eds., Physical processes in Binary Stars, Kluwer Dordrecht, 1996 (NATO ASI series).
We discuss the results of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations, using a pseudo-Newtonian potential, of thin disk (h/r ~ 0.1) accretion onto black holes. We find (i) that magnetic stresses persist within the marginally stable orbit, and (ii) that the importance of those stresses for the dynamics of the flow depends upon the strength of magnetic fields in the disk outside the last stable orbit. Strong disk magnetic fields (alpha > 0.1) lead to a gross violation of the zero-torque boundary condition at the last stable orbit, while weaker fields (alpha ~ 0.01) produce results more aki…
We present a model for a corona above a geometrically thin standard disk around a black hole. This corona is fed by matter from the thin disk which evaporates from the cool layers underneath. An equilibrium establishes between the cool accretion stream and the hot flow. In the inner region evaporation becomes so efficient that at low accretion rates all matter flows via the corona and proceeds towards the black hole as an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF). We investigate this transition for accretion disks around stellar black holes. We derive a set of four ordinary differential equati…
We present the results of axisymmetric, time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accretion flows around black holes. The calculations begin from a rotationally supported thick torus which contains a weak poloidal field. Accretion is produced by growth and saturation of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) provided the wavelength of the fastest growing mode is less than the thickness of the torus. Using a computational grid that spans more than two decades in radius, we compare the time-averaged properties of the flow to previous hydrodynamical simulations. The net mass accretion ra…
We study the transition from the geometrically thin disk to the hot coronal flow for accretion onto black holes. The efficiency of evaporation determines the truncation of the geometrically thin disk as a function of the black hole mass and the mass flow rate in the outer disk. The physics of the evaporation was already described in detail in earlier work (Meyer et al. 2000b). We show now that the value of the viscosity parameter for the coronal gas has a strong influence on the evaporation efficiency. For smaller values of the viscosity evaporation is less efficient. For a given mass flow rat…
A review is made of recent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory and simulations of origin of jets from accretion disks. Many compact astrophysical objects emit powerful, highly-collimated, oppositely directed jets. Included are the extra galactic radio jets of active galaxies and quasars, and old compact stars in binaries, and emission line jets in young stellar objects. It is widely thought that these different jets arise from rotating, conducting accretion disks threaded by an ordered magnetic field. The twisting of the magnetic field by the rotation of the disk drives the jets by magnetically e…
We study the radial and vertical oscillations in the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion flows around black holes. General relativistic effects are taken into account by using pseudo-Newtonian potential. We find that the structure of MHD flows is changed at $3.8 r_{\rm s}\leq r\leq 6.3 r_{\rm s}$ and the two pairs of quasi-periodic oscillations (twin QPOs) are excited in that region. The time evolution of the power spectrum density (PSD) indicates that these twin QPOs are most likely to be produced by the resonance between the Keplerian frequency $ν_{\rm K}$ and the epicyclic…
Global time-dependent simulations provide a means to investigate time-dependent dynamic evolution in accretion disks. This paper seeks to extend previous local simulations by beginning a systematic effort to develop fully global three-dimensional simulations. The nonlinear development of the magnetorotational instability is investigated using a time-explicit finite difference code written in cylindrical coordinates. The equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics are solved with the assumption of an adiabatic equation of state. Both a Newtonian, and a pseudo-Newtonian potential are used. Two simpl…
A selection of results from the general relativistic MHD accretion simulations described in the previous talk are presented. We find that the magnetic field strength increases sharply with decreasing radius and is also enhanced near rapidly-spinning black holes. The greater magnetic field strength associated with rapid black hole rotation leads to a large outward electromagnetic angular momentum flux that substantially reduces both the mean accretion rate and the net accreted angular momentum per unit rest-mass. This electromagnetic stress strongly violates the traditional guess that the accre…
We present a global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) three dimensional simulation of a nonradiative accretion flow originating in a pressure supported torus. The evolution is controlled by the magnetorotational instability which produces turbulence. The flow forms a nearly Keplerian disk. The total pressure scale height in this disk is comparable to the vertical size of the initial torus. Gas pressure dominates only near the equator; magnetic pressure is more important in the surrounding atmosphere. A magnetically dominated bound outflow is driven from the disk. The accretion rate through the disk ex…
We report on the second phase of our study of slightly rotating accretion flows onto black holes. We consider magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) accretion flows with a spherically symmetric density distribution at the outer boundary, but with spherical symmetry broken by the introduction of a small, latitude-dependent angular momentum and a weak radial magnetic field. We study accretion flows by means of numerical 2D, axisymmetric, MHD simulations with and without resistive heating. Our main result is that the properties of the accretion flow depend mostly on an equatorial accretion torus which is ma…
Accretion disks are three-dimensional, turbulent, often self-gravitating, magnetohydrodynamic flows, which can be modeled in detail with numerical simulations. In this paper, we present a new algorithm that is based on a spectral decomposition method to simulate such flows. Because of the high order of the method, we can solve the induction equation in terms of the magnetic potential and, therefore, ensure trivially that the magnetic fields in the numerical solution are divergence free. The spectral method also suffers minimally from numerical dissipation and allows for an easy implementation …
We carried out two dimensional high-resolution magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of an accretion disk around a weakly magnetized neutron star. General relativistic effects are taken into account by using pseudo-Newtonian potential of Paczýnski, B., P. J. Witta (1980). When magnetic loops connect the neutron star and the accretion disk, the twist injection from the disk or from the rotating neutron star triggers expansion of the loops. Since the expanding magnetic loops prevent inflow toward the magnetic poles of the neutron star, disk matter accumulates on the boundary between the magnetos…
We present three-dimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamic simulations of radiatively inefficient spherical accretion onto a black hole. The simulations are initialized with a Bondi flow, and with a weak, dynamically unimportant, large-scale magnetic field. The magnetic field is amplified as the gas flows in. When the magnetic pressure approaches equipartition with the gas pressure, the field begins to reconnect and the gas is heated up. The heated gas is buoyant and moves outward, causing line stretching of the frozen-in magnetic field. This leads to further reconnection, and more heating and…
Outflows and convective motions in accretion flows have been intensively discussed recently in the context of advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) based on two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamical simulations. We, however, point that without proper treatments of the disk magnetic fields, a major source of viscosity, one can never derive general, firm conclusions concerning the occurrence of outflows and convection. We analyzed the 3D MHD numerical simulation data of magnetized accretion flows initially threaded by weak toroidal magnetic fields, finding large-scale co…
We develop a new method to describe the accretion flow in the corona above a thin disk around a black hole in vertical and radial extent. The model is based on the same physics as the earlier one-zone model, but now modified including inflow and outflow of mass, energy and angular momentum from and towards neighboring zones. We determine the radially extended coronal flow for different mass flow rates in the cool disk resulting in the truncation of the thin disk at different distance from the black hole. Our computations show how the accretion flow gradually changes to a pure vertically extend…
(Abridged) We present one of the first physically-motivated two-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) numerical simulations of a radiatively-cooled black-hole accretion disk. The fiducial simulation combines a total-energy-conserving formulation with a radiative cooling function, which includes bremsstrahlung, synchrotron, and Compton effects. By comparison with other simulations we show that in optically thin advection-dominated accretion flows, radiative cooling can significantly affect the structure, without necessarily leading to an optically thick, geometrically thi…
The spectral energy distributions of galactic black holes in the low/hard state and of low-luminosity AGN possess many common features, the most prominent being: compact, flat (or inverted) spectrum radio cores with high brightness temperatures; excess red and infrared emission, often correlated with the radio flux; an extremely weak (or absent) quasi-thermal hump and a hard X-ray power-law with high energy cut-off. These sources are thought to be accreting at low rates and advection (or convection) dominated accretion flows are usually considered the best candidates to explain them. Here we p…
Hypercritical accretion flows onto stellar mass black holes (BHs) are commonly considered as a promising model of central engines of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this model a certain fraction of gravitational binding energy of accreting matter is deposited to the energy of relativistic jets via neutrino annihilation and/or magnetic fields. However, some recent studies have indicated that the energy deposition rate by neutrino annihilation is somewhat smaller than that needed to power a GRB. To overcome this difficulty, Ramirez-Ruiz & Socrates (2005) proposed that high energy neutrinos from hot …
To explain the broad-band spectral energy distributions (SED) of Seyfert nuclei and QSOs, we study the emission spectrum emerging from a vertical disk-corona structure composed of a two-temperature plasma by solving hydrostatic equilibrium and radiative transfer self-consistently. Our model can nicely reproduce the soft X-ray excess with alpha (L_frequency proportional to the frequency to the power of -alpha) of about 1.5 and the hard tail extending to about 50 keV with alpha about 0.5. The different spectral slopes (alpha about 1.5 below 2 keV and about 0.5 above) are the results of different…
A 3D model intermediate between cellular automata (CA) models and the reduced magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) equations is presented to simulate solar impulsive events generated along a coronal magnetic loop. The model consists of a set of planes distributed along a magnetic loop between which the information propagates through Alfven waves. Statistical properties in terms of power-laws for energies and durations of dissipative events are obtained, and their agreement with X-ray and UV flares observations is discussed. The existence of observational biases is also discussed.
The nature of the magnetic coupling between T Tauri stars and their disks determines not only the mass accretion process but possibly the spin evolution of the central star. We have taken a recently-published surface magnetogram of one moderately-accreting T Tauri star (V2129 Oph) and used it to extrapolate the geometry of its large-scale field. We determine the structure of the open (wind-bearing) field lines, the closed (X-ray bright) field lines and those potentially accreting field lines that pass through the equatorial plane inside the Keplerian co-rotation radius. We consider a series of…
We present three-dimensional (3-D) magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of radiatively inefficient accretion flow around black holes. General relativistic effects are simulated by using the pseudo-Newtonian potential. We start calculations with a rotating torus threaded by localized poloidal magnetic fields with plasma beta, a ratio of the gas pressure to the magnetic pressure, $β=10$ and 100. When the bulk of torus material reaches the innermost region close to a central black hole, a magnetically driven jet emerges. This magnetic jet is derived by vertically inflating toroidal fields (`ma…
One of the mechanisms proposed for heating the corona above solar active regions is the damping of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. Continuing on previous work, we provide observational evidence for the existence of high-frequency MHD waves in coronal loops observed during the August 1999 total solar eclipse. A wavelet analysis is used to identify twenty 4x4 arcsec2 areas showing intensity oscillations. All detections lie in the frequency Hz (5-3 s), last for at least 3 periods at a confidence level of more than 99% and arise just outside known coronal loops. This leads us to suggest that they…
We present our first numerical results of axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic simulations for neutrino-cooled accretion tori around rotating black holes in general relativity. We consider tori of mass $\sim 0.1$--0.4$M_{\odot}$ around a black hole of mass $M=4M_{\odot}$ and spin $a=0$--$0.9M$; such systems are candidates for the central engines of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) formed after the collapse of massive rotating stellar cores and the merger of a black hole and a neutron star. In this paper, we consider the short-term evolution of a torus for a duration of $\approx 60$ ms, focusing on short-ha…
Stationary and axisymmetric ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion onto a black hole is studied analytically. The accreting plasma ejected from a plasma source with low velocity must be super-fast magnetosonic before passing through the event horizon. We work out and apply a trans-fast magnetosonic solution without the detailed analysis of the regularity conditions at the magnetosonic point, by introducing the bending angle $β$ of magnetic field line, which is the ratio of the toroidal and poloidal components of the magnetic field. To accrete onto a black hole, the trans-magnetosonic soluti…
We have studied non-stationary and non-axisymmetric perturbations of a magnetohydrodynamic accretion onto a rotating (Kerr) black hole. Assuming that the magnetic field dominates the plasma accretion, we find that the accretion suffers a large radial acceleration resulting from the Lorentz force, and becomes highly variable compared with the electromagnetic field there. In fact, we further find an interesting perturbed structure of the plasma velocity with a large peak in some narrow region located slightly inside of the fast-magnetosonic surface. This is due to the concentrated propagation of…
General relativistic numerical simulations of magnetized accretion flows around black holes show a disordered electromagnetic structure in the disk and corona and a highly relativistic, Poynting-dominated funnel jet in the polar regions. The polar jet is nearly consistent with the stationary paraboloidal Blandford-Znajek model of an organized field threading the polar regions of a rotating black hole. How can a disordered accretion disk and corona lead to an ordered jet? We show that the polar jet is associated with a strikingly simple angular-integrated toroidal current distribution $dI_ϕ/dr …
Popular models for the formation of X-ray spectra in AGN assume that a large fraction of the disk's angular momentum dissipation takes place in a hot corona that carries a small amount of the accreting mass. Here I discuss the formation of a magnetically-structured accretion disk corona, generated by buoyancy instability in the disk and the heating of localized flare regions up to the canonical X-ray emitting temperatures. I also examine the analogy between accreting disk-coronae and ADAFs and discuss the relevant emission mechanism in these two accretion models and how observational constrain…
We consider the accretion process in a disk with magnetic fields that are dragged in from the interstellar medium by gravitational collapse. Two diffusive processes are at work in the system: (1) "viscous" torques exerted by turbulent and magnetic stresses, and (2) "resistive" redistribution of mass with respect to the magnetic flux arising from the imperfect conduction of current. In steady state, self-consistency between the two rates of drift requires that a relationship exists between the coefficients of turbulent viscosity and turbulent resistivity. Ignoring any interactions with a stella…
We present a general procedure to solve numerically the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) equations within the framework of the 3+1 formalism. The work reported here extends our previous investigation in general relativistic hydrodynamics (Banyuls et al. 1997) where magnetic fields were not considered. The GRMHD equations are written in conservative form to exploit their hyperbolic character in the solution procedure. All theoretical ingredients necessary to build up high-resolution shock-capturing schemes based on the solution of local Riemann problems (i.e. Godunov-type schem…
