Context. Blue Stragglers Stars (BSSs) are thought to form in globular clusters by two main formation channels: i) mergers induced by stellar collisions and ii) coalescence or mass-transfer between companions in binary systems. The detailed study of the BSS properties is therefore crucial for understanding the binary evolution mechanisms, and the complex interplay between dynamics and stellar evolution in dense stellar systems. Aims. We present the first comparison between the BSS specific frequency and the binary fraction in the core of a sample of Galactic globular clusters, with the aim of investigating the relative efficiency of the two proposed formation mechanisms. Methods. We derived the frequency of BSSs in the core of thirteen low-density Galactic globular clusters by using deep ACS@HST observations and investigated its correlation with the binary fraction and various other cluster parameters. Results. We observed a correlation between the BSS specific frequency and the binary fraction. The significance of the correlation increases by including a further dependence on the cluster central velocity dispersion. Conclusions. We conclude that the unperturbed evolution of primordial binaries could be the dominant BSS formation process, at least in low-density environments.
In this paper we report on the most significant results from a statistical analysis of the main properties of globular cluster blue straggler stars (BSS) extracted from the HST snapshot database of photometrically homogeneous CMDs (Piotto et al. 2002). The BSS relative frequency presents a significant anticorrelation with the collisional rate and with the cluster total absolute luminosity.
The formation of blue stragglers is still not completely understood, particularly the relationship between formation environment and mechanism. We use a large, homogeneous sample of blue stragglers in the cores of 57 globular clusters to investigate the relationships between blue straggler populations and their environments. We use a consistent definition of "blue straggler" based on position in the color-magnitude diagram, and normalize the population relative to the number of red giant branch stars in the core. We find that the previously determined anti-correlation between blue straggler fr…
We present a spectroscopic analysis of HST/STIS and FOS low- and intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of 55 stars (turn-off stars, horizontal branch stars and blue stragglers) in four globular clusters (47 Tucanae, M3, NGC6752, and NGC6397). Stars were analyzed with non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium model atmospheres, and values for their effective temperatures and gravities and some rotation rates were obtained. Using photometric fluxes, we also obtained radii, luminosities and spectroscopic masses.
In this paper, we present the simulations for the primordial blue stragglers in the old open cluster M67 based on detailed modelling of the evolutionary processes. The principal aim is to discuss the contribution of mass transfer between the components of close binaries to the blue straggler population in M67. First, we followed the evolution of a binary of 1.4M$_\odot$+0.9M$_\odot$. The synthetic evolutionary track of the binary system revealed that a primordial blue straggler had a long lifetime in the observed blue straggler region of color-magnitude diagram. Second, a grid of models for cl…
We investigate the effects of changes in the blue straggler formation rate in globular clusters on the blue straggler distribution in the color-magnitude diagram. We find that the blue straggler distribution is highly sensitive to the past formation rate. Comparing our models to new UBV observations of a region close to the core of 47 Tucanae suggests that this cluster may have stopped forming blue straggler formation several Gyr ago. This cessation of formation can be associated with an epoch of primordial binary burning which has been invoked in other clusters to infer the imminence of core …
We study the post-main sequence evolution of products of collisions between main sequence stars (blue stragglers), with particular interest paid to the horizontal branch and asymptotic giant branch phases. We found that the blue straggler progeny populate the colour-magnitude diagram slightly blueward of the red giant branch and between 0.2 and 1 magnitudes brighter than the horizontal branch. We also found that the lifetimes of collision products on the horizontal branch is consistent with the numbers of so-called "evolved blue straggler stars" (E-BSS) identified by various authors in a numbe…
We present high-precision VI photometry of stars from the middle of the giant branch to about 5 magnitudes below the main-sequence turnoff in the globular cluster Palomar 13 based on images obtained with the Keck II 10m telescope. We tabulate a complete sample of blue stragglers in the cluster out to about 18 core radii. The blue straggler population is significantly more centrally concentrated than the giant star sample, which is in turn significantly more centrally concentrated than the main-sequence star sample. Palomar 13 has one of the highest specific frequencies of blue stragglers of an…
Recent HST observations of a large sample of globular clusters reveal that every cluster contains between 40 and 400 blue stragglers. The population does not correlate with either stellar collision rate (as would be expected if all blue stragglers were formed via collisions) or total mass (as would be expected if all blue stragglers were formed via the unhindered evolution of a subset of the stellar population). In this paper, we support the idea that blue stragglers are made through both channels. The number produced via collisions tends to increase with cluster mass. In this paper we show ho…
We examine the blue straggler populations of 13 low-luminosity (M_V_t >~ -6) globular clusters and 2 old open clusters. These clusters test blue straggler formation in environments intermediate between higher luminosity (and usually higher density) clusters and the Galactic field. The anti-correlation between the relative frequency of blue stragglers (F_BSS = N_BSS / N_HB) and cluster luminosity continues to the lowest luminosity clusters, which have frequencies meeting or exceeding that of field stars. In addition we find that the anti-correlation between straggler frequency and central densi…
We report on new WFPC2 observations of the globular cluster NGC 288, focusing our attention on peculiar stars. A very pronounced binary sequence, paralleling the ordinary Main Sequence (MS) is clearly observed in the Color Magnitude Diagram (CMD) and a huge relative fraction of Blue Straggler Stars is measured. The dataset offers the opportunity of studying the evolution of a large population of binaries (and binary evolution by-products) in a low density environment, where the evolution of such systems is not dominated by collisions and encounters. Three (very) Extreme Horizontal Branch Stars…
We have used the results of recent smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations of colliding stars to create models appropriate for input into a stellar evolution code. In evolving these models, we find that little or no surface convection occurs, precluding angular momentum loss via a magnetically-driven stellar wind as a viable mechanism for slowing rapidly rotating blue stragglers which have been formed by collisions. Angular momentum transfer to either a circumstellar disk (possibly collisional ejecta) or a nearby companion are plausible mechanisms for explaining the observed low rotation ve…
We investigate the distribution of Blue Straggler stars in the field of three open star clusters. The main purpose is to highlight the crucial role played by general Galactic disk fore-/back-ground field stars, which are often located in the same region of the Color Magnitude Diagram as Blue Straggler stars. We analyze photometry taken from the literature of 3 open clusters of intermediate/old age rich in Blue Straggler stars, and which are projected in the direction of the Perseus arm, and study their spatial distribution and the Color Magnitude Diagram. As expected, we find that a large port…
We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary OGLEGC-228 (V228) to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. Based on measured systemic velocity, proper motion and distance, the system is a blue straggler member of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Our analysis shows that V228 is a semi-detached Algol. We obtain M=1.512 +/- 0.022 Msun, R=1.357 +/- 0.019 Rsun, L=7.02 +/- 0.050 Lsun for the hotter and more luminous primary component and M=0.200 +/- 0.007 Msun, R=1.238 +/- 0.013 Rsun, L=1.57 +/- 0.09 Lsun for the Roche lobe filling secondary.
We have surveyed the blue straggler star population of the Galactic globular cluster M5 using high-resolution images of the core along with wide-field ground-based images reaching to more than 19 core radii. To gauge M5's relative efficiency of producing stragglers, we compared our sample to five studies of other globular clusters (mainly Ferraro et al. 1997b; Ferraro et al 2003; and Piotto et al. 2004). Using a "bright" sample selected in the same way as Ferraro et al. 1997b, we found a bimodal radial distribution similar to those found in three other luminous clusters. When the radial distri…
By combining high-resolution HST and wide-field ground based observations, in ultraviolet and optical bands, we study the Blue Stragglers Star (BSS) population of the galactic globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904) from its very central regions up to its periphery. The BSS distribution is highly peaked in the cluster center, decreases at intermediate radii and rises again outward. Such a bimodal distribution is similar to those previously observed in other globular clusters (M3, 47Tucanae, NGC6752). As for these clusters, dynamical simulations suggest that, while the majority of BSS in M5 could be ori…
The recent observation (Ferraro et al. 2003b) of the blue straggler population in 47 Tucanae gives the first detailed characterization of their spatial distribution in the cluster over its entire volume. Relative to the light distribution, blue stragglers appear to be overabundant in the core and at large radii. The observed surface density profile shows a central peak, a zone of avoidance and a rise beyond twenty core radii. In light of these findings we explored the evolution of blue stragglers mimicking their dynamics in a multi-mass King model for 47 Tucanae. We find that the observed spat…
We have used a proper combination of multiband high-resolution {\it HST-WFPC2} and wide-field ground based observations to image the galactic globular cluster NGC 6266 (M62). The extensive photometric data set allows us to determine the center of gravity and to construct the most extended radial profile ever published for this cluster including, for the first time, detailed star counts in the very inner region. The star density profile is well reproduced by a standard King model with an extended core ($\sim 19''$) and a modest value of the concentration parameter ($c=1.5$), indicating that the…
A primary production mechanism for blue stragglers in globular clusters is thought to be collisionally-induced mergers, perhaps mediated by dynamical encounters involving binary stars. We model the formation and evolution of such blue stragglers, and produce theoretical distributions of them in the colour-magnitude diagram. We use a crude representation of cluster dynamics and detailed binary-single star encounter simulations to produce cross sections and rates for a variety of collisions. The results of the collisions are determined based on SPH simulations of realistic star models. The evolu…
We have analyzed high-resolution spectra of relatively cool blue stragglers and main sequence turnoff stars in the old open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). We attempt to identify blue stragglers whose spectra are least contaminated by binary effects (contamination by a binary companion or absorption by circumstellar material). These ``best'' stragglers have metallicities ([Fe/H] = -0.05) and abundance ratios of the blue stragglers are not significantly different from those of the turnoff stars. Based on arguments from hydrodynamical models of stellar collisions, we assert that the current upper limits…
Combination of high-precision photometry and spectroscopy allows the detailed study of the upper main sequence in open clusters. We are carrying out a comprehensive study of a number of clusters containing Be stars in order to evaluate the likelihood that a significant number of Be stars form through mass exchange in a binary. Our first results show that most young open clusters contain blue stragglers. In spite of the small number of clusters so far analysed, some trends are beginning to emerge. In younger open clusters, such as NGC 869 and NGC 663, there are many blue stragglers, most of whi…
We investigate the structure and evolution of blue stragglers stars which were formed from direct stellar collisions between main sequence stars in globular clusters. In particular, we look at the rotational evolution of the products of off-axis collisions. As found in previous work, such blue stragglers initially have too high an angular momentum to contract down to the main sequence. We consider angular momentum loss through either disc locking or locking to an outflowing wind and show that both methods allow the merged object to shed sufficient angular momentum to contract down to the main …
We have used high resolution WFPC2-HST and wide field ground-based observations to construct a catalog of blue straggler stars (BSS) in the globular cluster 47 Tuc spanning the entire radial extent of the cluster. The BSS distribution is highly peaked in the cluster center, rapidly decreases at intermediate radii, and finally rises again at larger radii. The observed distribution closely resembles that discovered in M3 by Ferraro et al (1993,1997). To date, complete BSS surveys covering the full radial extent (HST in the center and wide field CCD ground based observations of the exterior) have…
We report radial velocity studies of five candidate metal-poor field blue stragglers, all known to be deficient in lithium. Four of the five stars are single-lined spectroscopic binaries, with periods ranging from 302 to 840 days, and low orbital eccentricities, in agreement with similar behavior found for other blue straggler candidates by Preston & Sneden (2000) and Carney et al. (2001). The limited data available for lithium abundances indicate that all blue straggler candidates have depleted lithium abundances. Our results show higher values of v(rot) sin i for the binary stars than compar…
We use two stellar populations in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae to trace its dynamical history: blue stragglers and low mass main sequence stars. We assumed that the blue stragglers were formed through stellar collisions in all regions of the cluster. We find that in the core of the cluster, models of collisional blue stragglers agree well with the observations as long as blue stragglers are still continuing to form and the mass function in the cluster is extremely biased towards massive stars (x=-8 where a Salpeter mass function has x=+1.35). We show that such an extreme mass function is su…
Recent observations of blue stragglers by De Marco et al. (2004) have revealed continuum deficits on the blue side of the Balmer discontinuity, leading these authors to infer the presence of discs around the stars. This intriguing possibility may throw light on aspects of the mechanisms responsible for at least some of these objects; current theories of blue straggler formation invoke stellar collisions or interacting binaries, both of which appear capable of forming a circumstellar disc. However, by synthesizing photospheric spectra for models of rotating blue stragglers, we demonstrate that …
We have used a combination of ACS-HST high-resolution and wide-field SUBARU data in order to study the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) population over the entire extension of the remote Galactic globular cluster NGC 2419. The BSS population presented here is among the largest ever observed in any stellar system, with more than 230 BSS in the brightest portion of the sequence. The radial distribution of the selected BSS is essentially the same as that of the other cluster stars. In this sense the BSS radial distribution is similar to that of omega Centauri and unlike that of all Galactic globular clu…
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of the blue straggler S1082 in the open cluster M67. Our observations confirm the previously reported 1.07 day eclipse light curve and the absence of large radial-velocity variations of the narrow-lined star. However, we find two more spectral components which do vary on the 1.07 day period. We conclude that the system is triple. We fit the light and radial-velocity curves and find that the total mass of the inner binary is more than twice the turnoff mass and that the outer companion to the binary is a blue straggler on its own account. We brie…
Integrated spectroscopy is the method of choice for deriving the ages of unresolved stellar systems. However, hot stellar evolutionary stages, such as hot horizontal branch stars and blue straggler stars (BSSs), can affect the integrated ages measured using Balmer lines. Such hot, "non-canonical" stars may lead to overestimations of the temperature of the main sequence turn-off, and therefore underestimations of the integrated age of a stellar population. Using an optimized Hbeta index in conjunction with HST/WFPC2 color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we show that Galactic globular clusters exhibi…
We report the discovery of a variable blue straggler in the core of the globular cluster M5, based on a 12-hour long series of images obtained with the Planetary Camera aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. In addition, we present the light curves of 28 previously unknown or poorly studied large-amplitude variable stars (all but one are RR Lyrae) in the cluster core. A (V, U-I) color-magnitude diagram shows 24 blue stragglers within 2 core radii of the cluster center. The blue straggler population is significantly more centrally concentrated than the horizontal branch and red giant stars.
The astrometric data on the runaway star BD+43 3654 are consistent with the origin of this O4If star in the center of the Cyg OB2 association, while BD+43 3654 is younger than the association. To reconcile this discrepancy, we suggest that BD+43 3654 is a blue straggler formed via a close encounter between two tight massive binaries in the core of Cyg OB2. A possible implication of this suggestion is that the very massive (and therefore apparently very young) stars in Cyg OB2 could be blue stragglers as well. We also suggest that the binary-binary encounter producing BD+43 3654 might be respon…
We present data for four ultra-Li-deficient, warm, halo stars. The Li deficiency of two of these is a new discovery. Three of the four stars have effective temperatures Teff ~ 6300 K, in contrast to previously known Li-deficient halo stars which spanned the temperature range of the Spite Plateau. In this paper we propose that these, and previously known ultra-Li-deficient halo stars, may have had their surface lithium abundances reduced by the same mechanism as produces halo field blue stragglers. Even though these stars have yet to reveal themselves as blue stragglers, they might be regarded …
Using HST-WFPC2 observations in two ultraviolet (UV) filters (F225W and F336W) of the central region of the high density Galactic Globular cluster (GGC) M80 we have identified 305 Blue Straggler Stars (BSS) which represents the largest and most concentrated population of BSS ever observed in a GGC. We also identify the largest, clean sample of evolved BSS yet found. The high stellar density alone cannot explain the BSS, and we suggest that in M80 we are witnessing a transient dynamical state, during which stellar interactions are delaying the core-collapse process leading to an exceptionally l…
We perform evolutionary calculations of binary stars to find progenitors of system with parameters similar to the eclipsing binary system V228. We show that a V228 binary system may be formed starting with an initial binary system which has a low main sequence star as an accretor. We also show that the best fitting model implies loss of about 50 per cent of initial total orbital momentum but only 5 per cent of initial total mass.
Binary population synthesis shows that mass transfer from a giant star to a main-sequence (MS) companion may account for some observed long-orbital period blue stragglers. However, little attention {\bf is paid to this blue straggler formation scenario} as dynamical instability often happens when the mass donor is a giant star. In this paper, we have studied the critical mass ratio, $q_{\rm c}$, for dynamically stable mass transfer from a giant star to a MS companion using detailed evolution calculations. The results show that a more evolved star is generally less stable for Roche lobe overflo…
We present a state-of-the-art N-body code which includes a detailed treatment of stellar and binary evolution as well as the cluster dynamics. This code is ideal for investigating all aspects relating to the evolution of star clusters and their stellar populations. It is applicable to open and globular clusters of any age. We use the N-body code to model the blue straggler population of the old open cluster M67. Preliminary calculations with our binary population synthesis code show that binary evolution alone cannot explain the observed numbers or properties of the blue stragglers. On the oth…
We present wide-field BVI photometry for about 11,500 stars in the low-metallicity cluster NGC 5466. We have detected the red giant branch bump for the first time, although it is at least 0.2 mag fainter than expected relative to the turnoff. The number of red giants (relative to main sequence turnoff stars) is in excellent agreement with stellar models from the Yonsei-Yale and Teramo groups, and slightly high compared to Victoria-Regina models. This adds to evidence that an abnormally large ratio of red giant to main-sequence stars is not correlated with cluster metallicity. We discuss theore…
Blue straggler stars present as secure members in the Galactic open clusters form a major challenge to the conventional picture of evolutionary population synthesis based on the stellar evolution theory of single stars, as illustrated in our previous work. Expansion of our sample in the current work to include younger age clusters provides a larger data base to expose the question raised for the simple stellar population model. The working sample now includes 97 Galactic open clusters of ages ranging from 0.1 to several Gyrs. The contributions of blue straggler stars to the integrated light of…
We have used high resolution WFPC2-HST and wide field ground-based observations to construct a catalog of blue straggler stars (BSS) which spans the entire radial extent of the globular cluster NGC 6752. The BSS sample is the most extensive ever obtained for this cluster. Though NGC 6752 is a high density cluster with a large binary population, we found that its BSS content is surprisingly low: the specific number of BSS is among the lowest ever measured in a cluster. The BSS distribution is highly peaked in the cluster center, shows a rapid decrease at intermediate radii, and finally rises ag…
We review recent 3D hydrodynamic calculations of stellar collisions using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, and we discuss the implications of the results for the formation and evolution of blue stragglers in globular clusters. We also discuss the construction of simple analytic models for merger remnants, approximating the mass loss, shock heating, mixing, and angular momentum transport during a collision with simple algorithms that can be calibrated using our 3D hydrodynamic results. The thermodynamic and chemical composition profiles predicted by these simple models are comp…
We have used multi-band high resolution HST WFPC2 and ACS observations combined with wide field ground-based observations to study the blue straggler star (BSS) population in the galactic globular cluster NGC 6388. As in several other clusters we have studied, the BSS distribution is found to be bimodal: highly peaked in the cluster center, rapidly decreasing at intermediate radii, and rising again at larger radii. In other clusters the sparsely populated intermediate-radius region (or ``zone of avoidance'') corresponds well to that part of the cluster where dynamical friction would have cause…
We use smoothed-particle hydrodynamics to examine differences between direct collisions of single stars and binary star mergers in their roles as possible blue straggler star formation mechanisms. We find in all cases that core helium in the progenitor stars is largely retained in the core of the remnant, almost independent of the type of interaction or the central concentration of the progenitor stars. We have also modelled the subsequent evolution of the hydrostatic remnants, including mass loss and energy input from the hydrodynamical interaction. The combination of the hydrodynamical and h…
We show that the X-ray source W31 in the core of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae is physically associated with the bright blue straggler BSS-7. The two sources are astrometrically matched to 0.061\arcsec, with a chance coincidence probability of less than 1%. We then analyse optical time-series photometry obtained with the {\em Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) and find that BSS-7 displays a 1.56 day periodic signal in the I band. We also construct a broad-band (far-ultraviolet through far-red) spectral energy distribution for BSS-7 and fit this with single and binary models. The binary model is a…
The central regions of six Galactic Globular Clusters (GGCs) (M3, M80, M10, M13, M92 and NGC 288) have been imaged using HST-WFPC2 and the ultraviolet (UV) filters (F255W, F336W). The selected sample covers a large range in both central density and metallicity ([Fe/H]). In this paper, we present a direct cluster-to-cluster comparison of the Blue Stragglers Stars (BSS) population as selected from (m_{255},m_{255}-m_{336}) Color Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs). We have found:(a) BSS in three of the clusters (M3, M80, M92) are much more concentrated toward the center of the cluster than the red giants;…
In the context of dwarf spheroidal galaxies it is hard to firmly disentangle a genuine Blue Stragglers (BSS) population from a normal young main (MS) sequence. This difficulty is persistent. For a sample of 9 non-star forming Local Group dwarf galaxies we compute the ``BSS frequency'' and compare it with that found in the Milky Way globular/open clusters and halo. The comparison shows that the BSS-frequency in dwarf galaxies, at any given Mv, is always higher than that in globular clusters of similar luminosities. Moreover, the estimated BSS-frequency for the lowest luminosity dwarf galaxies i…
We present an analysis of optical HST/STIS and HST/FOS spectroscopy of 6 blue stragglers found in the globular clusters M3, NGC6752 and NGC6397. These stars are a subsample of a set of ~50 blue stragglers and stars above the main sequence turn-off in four globular clusters which will be presented in an forthcoming paper. All but the 6 stars presented here can be well fitted with non-LTE model atmospheres. The 6 misfits, on the other hand, possess Balmer jumps which are too large for the effective temperatures implied by their Paschen continua. We find that our data for these stars are consiste…
By combining high-resolution HST and wide-field ground based observations, in ultraviolet and optical bands, we study the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) population of the low density galactic globular cluster M55 (NGC 6809) over its entire radial extent. The BSS projected radial distribution is found to be bimodal, with a central peak, a broad minimum at intermediate radii, and an upturn at large radii. Similar bimodal distributions have been found in other globular clusters (M3, 47 Tucanae, NGC 6752, M5), but the external upturn in M55 is the largest found to date. This might indicate a large frac…
The evolution of stellar collision products in cluster simulations has usually been modelled using simplified prescriptions. Such prescriptions either replace the collision product with an (evolved) main sequence star, or assume that the collision product was completely mixed during the collision. It is known from hydrodynamical simulations of stellar collisions that collision products are not completely mixed, however. We have calculated the evolution of stellar collision products and find that they are brighter than normal main sequence stars of the same mass, but not as blue as models that …
Stellar collisions are an important formation channel for blue straggler stars in globular and old open clusters. Hydrodynamical simulations have shown that the remnants of such collisions are out of thermal equilibrium, are not strongly mixed and can rotate very rapidly. Detailed evolution models of collision products are needed to interpret observed blue straggler populations and to use them to probe the dynamical history of a star cluster. We expand on previous studies by presenting an efficient procedure to import the results of detailed collision simulations into a fully implicit stellar …
We use high-resolution spectra obtained with the ESO Very Large Telescope to measure surface abundance patterns of 43 Blue Stragglers stars (BSS) in 47 Tuc. We discovered that a sub-population of BSS shows a significant depletion of Carbon and Oxygen with respect to the dominant population. This evidence would suggest the presence of CNO burning products on the BSS surface coming from a deeply peeled parent star, as expected in the case of mass-transfer process. This is the first detection of a chemical signature clearly pointing to a specific BSS formation process in a globular cluster.
We present an analysis of over 2200 V images taken on 14 nights at the Mt. Laguna 1 m telescope of the open cluster M67. Our observations overlap but extend beyond the field analyzed by Gilliland et al. (1991), and complement data recently published by van den Berg et al. (2002) and Stassun et al. (2002). We show variability in the light curves of all 4 of the known W UMa variables on timescales ranging from a day to decades (for AH Cnc). We have modeled the light curve of AH Cnc, and the total eclipses allow us to determine q = 0.16 +0.03/-0.02 and i = 86 +4/-8 degrees. The position of this s…
Aims: This paper presents a new homogeneous catalogue of blue straggler stars (BSS) in Galactic open clusters. Methods: Photometric data for 216 clusters were collected from the literature and 2782 BSS candidates were extracted from 76 of them. Results: We found that the anticorrelation of BSS frequency vs. total magnitude identified in similar studies conducted on Galactic globular clusters extends to the open cluster regime: clusters with smaller total magnitude tend to have higher BSS frequencies. Moreover, a clear correlation between the BSS frequency (obtained normalising the total number…
We present a reanalysis of far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the globular cluster NGC 2808 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. These data were first analyzed by Brown and coworkers, with an emphasis on the bright, blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in this cluster. Here, our focus is on the population of fainter FUV sources, which include white dwarfs (WDs), blue stragglers (BSs) and cataclysmic variables (CVs). We have therefore constructed the deepest FUV-NUV colour-magnitude diagram of NGC 2808 and also searched for variability among our FUV sources. Overall, we have found approx. …
The core of the Galactic Globular Cluster M3 (NGC 5272) has been observed with the WFPC2 through the filters F255W, F336W, F555W, and F814W. Using these observations along with a thorough reanalysis of earlier catalogs, we have produced a catalog of blue straggler stars (BSS) spanning the cluster. Earlier studies and the fainter part of our sample suffer severe selection biases. Our analysis is based on a more reliable bright global sample of 122 BSS. We confirm earlier suggestions that the radial BSS distribution in M3 is bimodal. It is strongly peaked in the center, has a clear dip 100--200"…
Abridged... Blue stragglers (BSS) are thought to be the product of either primordial or collisional binary systems. In the context of dwarf spheroidal galaxies it is hard to firmly disentangle a genuine BSS population from young main sequence (MS) stars tracing a ~1-2 Gyr old star forming episode. Assuming that their blue plume populations are made of BSS, we estimate the BSS frequency for 8 Local Group non star-forming dwarf galaxies, using a compilation of ground and space based photometry. Our results can be summarized as follows: (i) The BSS frequency in dwarf galaxies, at any given Mv, is…
