Optimization of parameters of nanostructure for study inverse proximity effects on "superconductor-ferromagnetic" interface using Polarized Neutron Reflectometry in enhanced standing wave regime
This work is devoted to experimental study of influence of superconductivity (S) on ferromagnetism (FM) (inverse proximity effects) with the help of Polarized Neutron Reflectivity. Combining meausurements of specular and diffuse intensities it is possible to obtain full picture of magnetization change in S/FM layered systems like magnetization rotation, domain state formation, inducing of magnetization in S layer, etc. To increase weak magnetic signal we propose to use enhanced neutron standing wave regime (e.g. waveguides). Choose of materials, optimization of thicknesses of layers, estimation of roughnesses influence is presented in this work.
Here we report on a feasibility study aiming to explore the potential of Polarized Neutron Reflectometry (PNR) for detecting the inverse proximity effect in a single superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayer. Experiments, conducted on the V(40nm)/Fe(1nm) S/F bilayer, have shown that experimental spin asymmetry measured at T = 0.5TC is shifted towards higher Q values compared to the curve measured at T = 1.5TC. Such a shift can be described by the appearance in superconducting vanadium of magnetic sub-layer with thickness of 7 nm and magnetization of +0.8 kG.
A resonant enhancement of the neutron standing waves is proposed to use in order to increase the magnetic neutron scattering from a "superconductor/ferromagnet"(S/F) bilayer. The model calculations show that usage of this effect allows to increase the magnetic scattering intensity by factor of hundreds. Aspects related to the growth procedure (order of deposition, roughness of the layers etc) as well as experimental conditions (resolution, polarization of the neutron beam, background etc) are also discussed. Collected experimental data for the S/F heterostructure Cu(32nm)/V(40nm)/Fe(1nm)/MgO c…
Polarized neutron reflectometry is used to study the magnetic proximity effect in a superconductor/ferromagnet (SC/FM) system of composition Cu(32nm)/V(40nm)/Fe(1nm)/MgO. In contrast to previous studies, here a single SC/FM bilayer, is studied and multilayer artefacts are excluded. The necessary signal enhancement is achieved by waveguide resonance, i.e. preparing the V(40nm)/Fe(1nm) SC/FM bilayer sandwiched by the highly reflective MgO substrate and Cu top layer, respectively . A new magnetic state of the system was observed at temperatures below 0.7 TC. manifested in a systematic change in t…
A strong mutual influence of superconductors (S) and ferromagnetic (F) conductors in hybrid F/S (Ni/Al) nanostructures is observed. The magnitude of a proximity-induced conductance on the F-side is more than two orders larger than that predicted by theory. Re-entrance of the superconductors to the normal state reciprocated by changes on the F-side has been found in low applied magnetic fields with new peaks in the differential resistance as an effect of the saturation magnetisation. An analysis has been developed providing a base for a numerical description of the system. PACS numbers: 74.50.+…
We find that the dependence on temperature and magnetic field of the electrical resistance of diffusive ferromagnetic nano-wires measured with superconducting electrodes changes drastically with the distance, $L$, between the ferromagnet/superconductor contacts, however is remarkably similar for the wires with the same $L$ ranging from 300 nm to 1000 nm, prepared under identical conditions. The result gives an evidence for the long-range superconductor-induced changes in transport properties of ferromagnetic nano-wires.
$\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7/La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}$ superconducting/ferromagnetic (SC/FM) multilayers have been studied by neutron reflectometry. Evidence for a characteristic difference between the structural and magnetic depth profiles is obtained from the occurrence of a structurally forbidden Bragg peak in the FM state. The comparison with simulated reflectivity curves allows us to identify two possible magnetization profiles: a sizable magnetic moment within the SC layer antiparallel to the one in the FM layer (inverse proximity effect), or a ``dead'' region in the FM layer with zero net magnet…
We present high resolution tunneling spectroscopy data at very low temperatures on superconducting nanostructures of lead built with an STM. By applying magnetic fields, superconductivity is restricted to length scales of the order of the coherence length. We measure the tunneling conductance and analyze the phonon structure and the low energy DOS. We demonstrate the influence of the geometry of the system on the magnetic field dependence of the tunneling density of states, which is gapless in a large range of fields. The behavior of the features in the tunneling conductance associated to phon…
We have investigated the structural, magnetic and superconducting properties of [Nb(1.5nm)/Fe(x)]$_{10}$ superlattices deposited on a thick Nb(50nm) layer. Our investigation showed that the Nb(50nm) layer grows epitaxially at 800$^\circ$C on Al$_2$O$_3$(1$\bar{1}$02) substrate. Samples grown at this condition posses a high residual resistivity ratio of 15-20. By using neutron reflectometry we show that Fe/Nb superlattices with $x<$ 4 nm form a depth-modulated FeNb alloy with concentration of iron varying between 60% and 90%. This alloy has properties of a weak ferromagnet. Proximity of this we…
We review a novel approach to the superconductive proximity effect in disordered normal-superconducting (N-S) structures. The method is based on the multicharge Keldysh action and is suitable for the treatment of interaction and fluctuation effects. As an application of the formalism, we study the subgap conductance and noise in two-dimensional N-S systems in the presence of the electron-electron interaction in the Cooper channel. It is shown that singular nature of the interaction correction at large scales leads to a nonmonotonuos temperature, voltage and magnetic field dependence of the And…
Using polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) we have investigated a YBa2Cu3O7(10nm)/La2/3Ca1/3MnO3(9nm)]10 (YBCO/LCMO) superlattice grown by pulsed laser deposition on a La0.3Sr0.7Al0.65Ta0.35O3 (LSAT) substrate. Due to the high structural quality of the superlattice and the substrate, the specular reflectivity signal extends with a high signal-to-background ratio beyond the fourth order superlattice Bragg peak. This allows us to obtain more detailed and reliable information about the magnetic depth profile than in previous PNR studies on similar superlattices that were partially impeded by pro…
Proximity-effect and resistance magneto-fluctuations measurements in submicron Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3Oz (NBCO) nano-loops are reported to investigate coherent charge transport in the non-superconducting state. We find an unexpected inhibition of cooper pair transport, and a destruction of the induced superconductivity, by lowering the temperature from 6K to 250mK. This effect is accompanied by a significant change in the conductance-voltage characteristics and in the zero bias conductance response to the magnetic field pointing to the activation of a strong pair breaking mechanism at lower temperature.…
The design of artificial vortex pinning landscapes is a major goal towards large scale applications of cuprate superconductors. While disordered nanometric inclusions have shown to modify their vortex phase diagram and to produce enhancements of the critical current1,2, the effect of ordered oxide nanostructures remains essentially unexplored. This is due to the very small nanostructure size imposed by the short coherence length, and to the technological difficulties in the nanofabrication process. Yet, the novel phenomena occurring at oxide interfaces open a wide spectrum of technological opp…
We present a theoretical analysis of the proximity effect at a graphene-superconductor interface. We use a tight-binding model for the electronic states in this system which allows to describe the interface at the microscopic level. Two different interface models are proposed: one in which the superconductor induces a finite pairing in the graphene regions underneath, thus maintaining the honeycomb structure at the interface and one that assumes that the graphene layer is directly coupled to a bulk superconducting electrode. We show that properties like the Andreev reflection probability and i…
We have used spin-polarized neutron reflectometry to investigate the magnetization profile of superlattices composed of ferromagnetic Gd and superconducting Nb layers. We have observed a partial suppression of ferromagnetic (F) order of Gd layers in [Gd($d_F$)/Nb(25nm)]$_{12}$ superlattices below the superconducting (S) transition of the Nb layers. The amplitude of the suppression decreases with increasing $d_F$. By analyzing the neutron spin asymmetry we conclude that the observed effect has an electromagnetic origin - the proximity-coupled S layers screen out the external magnetic field and …
Monovalent metals contain half filled band (HFB) of s-electrons. Emphasizing importance of Coulomb repulsions in HFB in 2D and 1D monovalent systems we sketched a theory (2018) for ambient temperature granular superconductivity reported by Thapa and Pandey (2018) in Au-Ag nanostructures (updated by Thapa et al., 2019). Sharpening our theory, we suggest that \textit{Coulomb repulsions in certain structurally perturbed regions (atomic clusters, stacking faults, grain boundaries etc.) create nanoscale reservoirs of singlet electron pairs}. These low dimensional patches are hybridized to a backgro…
This article is an overview of recent experimental and theoretical work on transport in phase-coherent hybrid nanostructures, with particular emphasis on dc electrical conduction. A summary of multiple scattering theory and the quasi-classical methods is presented and comparisons between the two are made. Several paradigms of phase-coherent transport are discussed, including zero-bias anomalies, reentrant and long range proximity effects, Andreev interferometers and superconductivity-induced conductance suppression.
We report the results of a study of superconducting proximity effects in clean Ferromagnet/Ferromagnet/Superconductor (${\rm F_1F_2S}$) heterostructures, where the pairing state in S is a conventional singlet s-wave. We numerically find the self-consistent solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations and use these solutions to calculate the relevant physical quantities. By linearizing the BdG equations, we obtain the superconducting transition temperatures $T_c$ as a function of the angle $α$ between the exchange fields in $\rm F_1$ and $\rm F_2$. We find that the results for $T_c(α)$…
We have calculated the temperature dependence of the conductance variation ($δS(T)$) of mesoscopic superconductor normal metal(S/N) structures, in the diffusive regime, analysing both weak and strong proximity effects. We show that in the case of a weak proximity effect there are two peaks in the dependence of $δS(T)$ on temperature. One of them (known from previous studies) corresponds to a temperature $T_1$ of order of the Thouless energy ($ε_{Th}$), and another, newly predicted maximum, occurs at a temperature $T_2$ where the energy gap in the superconductor $Δ(T_2)$ is of order $ε_{Th}$. I…
We report an investigation of the structural and electronic properties of hybrid superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers of composition Nb/Cu$_{60}$Ni$_{40}$ prepared by magnetron sputtering. X-ray and neutron reflectometry show that both the overall interfacial roughness and vertical correlations of the roughness of different interfaces are lower for heterostructures deposited on Al$_2$O$_3$(1$\bar{1}$02) substrates than for those deposited on Si(111). Mutual inductance experiments were then used to study the influence of the interfacial roughness on the superconducting transition temperatu…
We observe large amplitude changes in the resistance of ferromagnetic (F) wires at the onset of superconductivity of adjacent superconductors (S). New sharp peaks of large amplitude are found in the magnetoresistance of the F-wires. We discuss a new mechanism for the long-range superconducting proximity effect in F/S nanostructures based on the analysis of the topologies of actual Fermi-surfaces in ferromagnetic metals.
Heterostructures consisting of a cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7x and a ruthenate/manganite (SrRuO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3) spin valve have been studied by SQUID magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonances and neutron reflectometry. It was shown that due to the influence of magnetic proximity effect a magnetic moment is induced in the superconducting part of heterostructure and at the same time the magnetic moment is suppressed in the ferromagnetic spin valve. The experimental value of magnetization induced in the superconductor has the same order of magnitude with the calculations based on the induced ma…
We study graphene ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (F/S/F) nanostructures via a microscopic self-consistent Dirac Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. We show that as a result of proximity effects, experimentally accessible spin switching phenomena can occur as one tunes the Fermi level $μ_F$ of the F regions or varies the angle $θ$ between exchange field orientations. Superconductivity can then be switched on and off by varying either $θ$ or $μ_F$ (a spin-controlled superconducting graphene switch). The induced equal-spin triplet correlations in S can be controlled by tuning $μ_F$, effective…
Many proposals to generate a time-reversal invariant topological superconducting phase are based on imposing a $π$ phase difference between the superconducting leads proximitizing a nanostructure. We show that this phase can be induced on a thin film of a topological insulator like Bi$_2$Se$_3$ in proximity to a single s-wave superconductor. In our analysis we take into account the parity degree of freedom of the electronic states which is not included in effective Dirac-like surface theories. We find that the topological phase can be reached when the induced interparity pairing dominates over…
We discuss the properties of a ferromagnet - superconductor heterostructure on the basis of a Hubbard model featuring exchange splitting in the ferromagnet and electron - electron attraction in the superconductor. We have solved the spin - polarized Hartree - Fock - Gorkov equations together with the Maxwell's equation (Ampere's law) fully self-consistently. We have found that a Proximity Effect - Fulde - Ferrell - Larkin - Ovchinnikov state is realized in such a heterostructure. It manifests itself in an oscillatory behavior of the pairing amplitude in the ferromagnet and spontaneously genera…
We study the subgap spectrum of the interacting single-level quantum dot coupled between two superconducting reservoirs, forming the Josephson-type circuit, and additionally hybridized with a metallic normal lead. This system allows for the phase-tunable interplay between the correlation effects and the proximity-induced electron pairing resulting in the singlet-doublet (0-$π$) crossover and the phase-dependent Kondo effect. We investigate the spectral function, induced local pairing, Josephson supercurrent, and Andreev conductance in a wide range of system parameters by the numerically exact …
After more than a decade, direct observation of the odd frequency triplet pairing state in super- conducting hybrid structures remains elusive. We propose an experimentally feasible setup that can unambiguously reveal the zero energy peak due to proximity-induced equal spin superconducting triplet correlations. We theoretically investigate a two dimensional Josephson junction in the diffu- sive regime. The nanostructure consists of a normal metal sandwiched between two ferromagnetic layers with spiral magnetization patterns. By applying an external magnetic field perpendicular to the junction …
We present the findings of the superconductivity in the silicon nanostructures prepared by short time diffusion of boron after preliminary oxidation of the n-type Si (100) surface. These Si-based nanostructures represent the p-type high mobility silicon quantum well (Si-QW) confined by the delta - barriers heavily doped with boron. The ESR studies show that the delta - barriers appear to consist of the trigonal dipole centers, B(+)-B(-), which are caused by the negative-U reconstruction of the shallow boron acceptors, 2B(0)=>B(+)-B(-). The temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the res…
The four-layered F/S/F$'$/S$'$ nanostructure consisting of rather dirty superconducting (S) and ferromagnetic (F) metals is studied within the theory of the proximity effect taking detailed account of the boundary conditions. The F/S structures with four F and S layers are shown to have considerably richer physics than the F/S/F trilayer (due to the interplay between the 0 and $π$ phase superconductivity and the 0 and $π$ phase magnetism) and even the F/S superlattices. The extra $π$ phase superconducting states obtained for the four-layered F/S/F$^{\prime }$/S$^{\prime }$ system are found to …
We analyze the proximity effect of superconductor/ferromagnet nanostructures and point out that the scattering of quasiparticle of spin-triplet pairs by local magnetic moments leads to large resistance peak slightly below the superconducting transition temperature of the superconductor. Both the temperature and the magnitude of the resistance peak decrease with increasing magnetic field, which agree quite well with the experimental results reported in [Nature Phys. 6, 389 (2010)].
Superconductor-ferromagnet (S-F) hybrids based on half-metallic ferromagnets, such as CrO2, are excellent candidates for superconducting spintronic applications. This is primarily due to their fully spin polarized nature, which produces significantly enhanced long-range triplet proximity effects.. However, reliable production of CrO2-based Josephson junctions (JJs) is challenging, mainly because of the difficulty to control the transparency of the S/F interface. We have grown CrO2 nanowires by chemical vapor deposition on TiO2 substrates combined with selective area growth in trenches defined …
We study proximity effects in clean nanoscale superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (S$\mid$N$\mid$S) graphene heterostructures using a self-consistent numerical solution to the continuum Dirac Bogoliubov-de Gennes (DBdG) equations. We obtain results for the pair amplitude and the local density of states (DOS), as a function of doping and of the geometrical parameters determining the width of the structures. The superconducting correlations are found to penetrate the normal graphene layers even when there is extreme mismatch in the normal and superconducting doping levels, where specular …
We have measured the transport properties of Ferromagnet - Superconductor nanostructures, where two superconducting aluminum (Al) electrodes are connected through two ferromagnetic iron (Fe) ellipsoids in parallel. We find that, below the superconducting critical temperature of Al, the resistance depends on the relative alignment of the ferromagnets' magnetization. This spin-valve effect is analyzed in terms of spin accumulation in the superconducting electrode submitted to inverse proximity effect.
We theoretically study the Josephson effect in a superconductor/normal metal/superconductor ({\it S}/{\it N}/{\it S}) Josephson junction composed of $s$-wave {\it S}s with {\it N} which is sandwiched by two ferromagnetic insulators ({\it F}s), forming a spin valve, in the vertical direction of the junction. We show that the 0-$π$ transition of the Josephson critical current occurs with increasing the thickness of {\it N} along the junction. This transition is due to the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) which induces ferromagnetic magnetization in the {\it N}. Moreover, we find that, even for fi…
We present a microscopic theory of proximity effect in the ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (F/S/F) nanostructures where S is s-wave low-T_c superconductor and F's are layers of 3d transition ferromagnetic metal. Our approach is based on the solution of Gor'kov equations for the normal and anomalous Green's functions together with a self-consistent evaluation of the superconducting order parameter. We take into account the elastic spin-conserving scattering of the electrons assuming s-wave scattering in the S layer and s-d scattering in the F layers. In accordance with the previous quasi…
With x-ray absorption spectroscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry we studied how the magnetic proximity effect at the interface between the cuprate high-$T_C$ superconductor $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}$ (YBCO) and the ferromagnet $\mathrm{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}$ (LCMO) is related to the electronic and magnetic properties of the LCMO layers. In particular, we explored how the magnitude of the ferromagnetic Cu moment on the YBCO side depends on the strength of the antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange coupling with the Mn moment on the LCMO side. We found that the Cu moment remains sizeable if the AF …
The ongoing quest for unambiguous signatures of topological superconductivity and Majorana modes in magnet-superconductor hybrid systems creates a high demand for suitable superconducting substrates. Materials that incorporate $s$-wave superconductivity with a wide energy gap, large spin-orbit coupling, and high surface quality, which enable the atom-by-atom construction of magnetic nanostructures using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope, are particularly desired. Since single materials rarely fulfill all these requirements we propose and demonstrate the growth of thin films of a high-…
The interplay between superconductivity (SC) and ferromagnetism (FM) when embedded together has attracted unprecedented research interest due to very rare coexistence of these two phenomena. The focus has been mainly put into the proximity induced effects like, coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity, higher critical current, triplet superconductivity etc. However, very little attention has been paid experimentally to the role of magnetic constituent on triggering phase slip processes in the composite films (CFs). We demonstrate that less than 1 at. % of magnetic contribution in the CFs…
We theoretically study self-consistent proximity effects in finite-sized systems consisting of ferromagnet ($\rm F$) layers coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor ($\rm S$). We consider both $\rm SF_1F_2$ and $\rm SH$ nanostructures, where the $\rm F_1 F_2$ bilayers are uniformly magnetized, and the ferromagnetic $\rm H$ layer possesses a helical magnetization profile. We find that when the $\rm F_1 F_2$ layers are weakly ferromagnetic, a hard gap can emerge when the relative magnetization directions are rotated from parallel to antiparallel. Moreover, the gap is most prominent when the thickne…
