The thermal conductivity of nanoparticles colloidal suspensions, submitted to the action of an external force field has been calculated by non equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. For driven forces in the radio frequency and microwave ranges, we show that the thermal conductivity of nanofluids can be strongly enhanced without cluster formation.
We evaluate the thermal conductivity of a model nanofluid at various volume fractions of nanoparticles with equilibrium (EMD) and non-equilibrium (NEMD) molecular dynamics simulations. The Green-Kubo formalism is used for the EMD simulations while a net heat flux is imposed on the system for the NEMD simulations. The nanoparticle-nanoparticle, fluid-fluid and fluid-nanoparticle interactions are all taken as Lennard-Jones potentials. An empirical parameter is added to the attractive part of the potential to control the hydrophilicity of the nanoparticles, hence controlling how well dispersed ar…
Determination of zeta-potential of nanofluids based on electrolyte solutions from the measurements by the methods of electrical spectroscopy and laser correlation spectroscopy
At nonlinear orders in the electric field, the vanishing of the Hall conductivity does not prevent the nonlinear component of the current from being transverse for selected field directions. We study electrons on $\mathcal{C}_{3v}$-symmetric honeycomb lattice for which the Hall conductivity vanishes at first and second order. Nevertheless, the second-order current component is transverse for fields perpendicular to the three mirror lines. The $\mathcal{C}_{3v}$ symmetry constrains the first-order and second-order conductivity tensors to have only one independent component each, which we calcul…
The kagome lattice antiferromagnets Mn$_3$X(= Sn, Ge) have a noncollinear 120$^\circ$ ordered ground state, which engenders a strong anomalous Hall response. It has been shown that this response is linked to the magnetic order and can be manipulated through it. Here we use a combination of strain and spin-transfer torques to control the magnetic order and hence switch deterministically between states of different chirality. Each of these chiral ground states has an anomalous Hall conductivity tensor in a different direction. Furthermore, we show that a similar manipulation of the strained samp…
Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) are generally designed to avoid negative differential conductivity (NDC) in the vicinity of the operation point in order to prevent instabilities. We demonstrate, that the threshold condition is possible under an inhomogeneous distribution of the electric field (domains) and leads to lasing at an operation point with a voltage bias normally attributed to the NDC region. For our example, a Terahertz QCL operating up to the current maximum temperature of 199 K, the theoretical findings agree well with the experimental observations. In particular, we experimentally o…
We analyze intrinsic nonlinearities in two-dimensional polaritonic materials interacting with an optical wave. Focusing on the case of graphene, we show that the second-order nonlinear optical conductivity due to carrier density fluctuations associated with the excitation of a plasmon polariton is closely related to the ponderomotive force due to the oscillating optical field. This relation is first established through an elegant thermodynamic approach for a Drude-like plasma, in the frequency range where intraband scattering is the dominant contribution to conductivity. Subsequently, we exten…
