The control of Kerr nonlinearity with electric fields in an asymmetric double quantum-dot systems coupling with tunneling is investigated theoretically. It is found that,by proper tuning of two light beams and tunneling via a bias voltage, the Kerr nonlinearity can be enhanced and varied within a wide scale.
We demonstrate low-power amplification process in cavity optomechanics (COM). This operation is based on the nonlinear position-modulated self-Kerr interaction. Owing to this nonlinear term, the effective coupling highly scales with the photon number, resulting in a giant enhancement of the cooperativity. Even for small nonlinearity, the system reaches the amplification threshold for weak driving strength, leading to low-power phonon lasing. This amplifier can be phase-preserving and provides a practical advantage related to the power consumption issues. This work opens up new avenues to reali…
Nonlinearity is the key to introducing novel concepts in various technologies utilizing traveling waves. In contrast to the field of optics, where highly functional devices have been developed using optical Kerr nonlinearity, such a nonlinear effect in acoustic devices has yet to be fully exploited. Here, we show that most fundamental nonlinear phenomena of self-phase modulation (SPM), cross-phase modulation (XPM) and four-wave mixing (FWM) caused by the acoustic Kerr effect are quantitatively characterized using a newly developed platform consisting of a planar nanoelectromechanical waveguide…
We theoretically examine the role of Kerr nonlinearities for graphene plasmonics in nanostructures, specifically in nanoribbons. The nonlinear Kerr interaction is included semiclassically in the intraband approximation. The resulting electromagnetic problem is solved numerically by self-consistent iteration with linear steps using a real-space discretization. We derive a simple approximation for the resonance shifts in general graphene nanostructures, and obtain excellent agreement with numerics for moderately high field strengths. Near plasmonic resonances the nonlinearities are strongly enha…
We consider the response of a nanomechanical resonator interacting with an electromagnetic cavity via a radiation pressure coupling and a cross-Kerr coupling. Using a mean field approach we solve the dynamics of the system, and show the different corrections coming from the radiation pressure and the cross-Kerr effect to the usually considered linearized dynamics.
We analyse the combined effect of the radiation-pressure and cross-Kerr nonlinearity on the stationary solution of the dynamics of a nanomechanical resonator interacting with an electromagnetic cavity. Within this setup, we show how the optical bistability picture induced by the radiation-pressure force is modified by the presence of the cross-Kerr interaction term. More specifically, we show how the optically bistable region, characterising the pure radiation-pressure case, is reduced by the presence of a cross-Kerr coupling term. At the same time, the upper unstable branch is extended by the…
The quantum confiment of Rydberg excitons (REs) in quantum structures opens the way towards considering nonlinear interactions in such systems. We present a theoretical calculation of optical functions in the case of a nonlinear coupling between REs in a quantum well with an electromagnetic wave. Using the Real Density Matrix Approach (RDMA), the analytical expressions for a linear and nonlinear absorption are derived and numerical calculations for Cu$_2$0 quantum wells are performed. The results indicate the conditions in which quantum well confinement states can be observed in linear and non…
We propose a scheme for enhancing the optomechanical coupling between microwave and mechanical resonators by up to seven orders of magnitude to the ultrastrong coupling limit in a circuit optomechanical setting. The tripartite system considered here consists of a Josephson junction Cooper-pair box that mediates the coupling between the microwave cavity and the mechanical resonator. The optomechanical coupling can be modified by tuning the gate charge and the magnetic flux bias of the Cooper-pair box which in turn affect the Josephson capacitance of the Cooper-pair box. We additionally show tha…
We explore amplification and cross-Kerr nonlinearity by a three-level emitter (3LE) embedded in a waveguide and driven by two light beams. The coherent amplification and cross-Kerr nonlinearity were demonstrated in recent experiments, respectively, with a V and a ladder-type 3LE coupled to an open superconducting transmission line carrying two microwave fields. Here, we consider $Λ$, V, and ladder-type 3LE, and compare the efficiency of coherent and incoherent amplification as well as the magnitude of the cross-Kerr phase shift in all three emitters. We apply the Heisenberg-Langevin equations …
Two-photon loss mechanisms often accompany a Kerr nonlinearity. The kinetic inductance exhibited by superconducting transmission lines provides an example of a Kerr-like nonlinearity that is accompanied by a nonlinear resistance of the two-photon absorptive type. Such nonlinear dissipation can degrade the performance of amplifiers and mixers employing a Kerr-like nonlinearity as the gain or mixing medium. As an aid for parametric amplifier design, we provide a quantum analysis of a cavity parametric amplifier employing a Kerr nonlinearity that is accompanied by a two-photon absorptive loss. Be…
We theoretically investigate the nonlinear effects in a hybrid quantum optomechanical system consisting of two optically coupled semiconductor microcavities containing a quantum dot and a Kerr nonlinear substrate. The steady state behavior of the mean intracavity optical field demonstrates that the system can be used as an all optical switch. We further investigate the spectrum of small fluctuations in the mechanical displacement of the movable distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) and observe that normal mode splitting (NMS) takes place for high Kerr nonlinearity and pump power. In addition, we h…
We discuss, from a theoretical point of view, the four wave mixing spectroscopy on an ensemble of p-doped quantum dots in a magnetic field slightly tilted from the in-plane configuration. We describe the system evolution in the density matrix formalism. In the limit of coherent ultrafast optical driving, we obtain analytical formulas for the single system dynamics and for the response of an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble. The results are compared to the previously studied time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy on the same system. We show that the Kerr rotation and four wave mixing spectr…
We propose a scheme to induce weak-light nonlinearity in a double quantum dot. The scheme positively utilizes locality and dissipation of an external auxiliary system. As a plausible setup, we consider a complex system in which a localized plasmon field from a metallic nanotip couples with only one of the coupled quantum dots. The perturbative calculation with respect to the light intensity shows that, even by a sufficiently weak light, a dipole-forbidden two-exciton NOON state is prepared as the steady state. This result can be explained by combining the two factors: decoherence-induced quant…
We propose a scheme for dispersive readout of stored energy in one mode of a nonlinear superconducting microwave ring resonator by detection of the frequency shift of a second mode coupled to the first via a Kerr nonlinearity. Symmetry is used to enhance the device responsivity while minimizing self nonlinearity of each mode. Assessment of the signal to noise ratio indicates that the scheme will function at the single photon level, allowing quantum non-demolition measurement of the photon number state of one mode. Experimental data from a simplified version of the device demonstrating the prin…
A description of spin Faraday rotation, Kerr rotation and ellipticity signals for single- and multi-layer ensembles of singly charged quantum dots (QDs) is developed. The microscopic theory considers both the single pump-pulse excitation and the effect of a train of such pulses, which in the case of long resident-electron spin coherence time leads to a stationary distribution of the electron spin polarization. The calculations performed for single-color and two-color pump-probe setups show that the three experimental techniques: Faraday rotation, Kerr rotation and ellipticity measurements prov…
