The onset of antiprotonic X-ray transitions at high principal quantum numbers and the occurence of electronic X-rays in antiprotonic argon, krypton, and xenon has been analyzed with the help of Multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations. The shell-by-shell ionisation by Auger electron emission, characterised by appearance and disappearance of X-ray lines, is followed through the antiprotonic cascade by considering transition and binding energies of both the antiproton and the remaining electrons. Electronic lines could be attributed partly to specific states of the antiprotonic atom de-excitation.
The state dependent quenching mechanism of metastable antiprotonic He atoms by contaminants is suggested to explain existing experimental data. The effect of antiproton transfer from the antiprotonic He to noble gas contaminants is shown to play a significant role. Preliminary estimations have been done in the framework of the coupled channels model. The obtained results support the idea of strong dependence of quenching cross-sections on the antiprotonic states quantum numbers and enable to explain qualitatively existing discrepancies between experimental results, obtained for different conta…
We present accurate measurements of carrier-envelope phase effects on ionisation of the noble gases with few-cycle laser pulses. The experimental apparatus is calibrated by using atomic hydrogen data to remove any systematic offsets and thereby obtain accurate CEP data on other generally used noble gases such as Ar, Kr and Xe. Experimental results for H are well supported by exact TDSE theoretical simulations however significant differences are observed in case of noble gases.
We present theoretical studies of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in rare gases driven by plasmonic field enhancement. This kind of fields appears when plasmonic nanostructures are illuminated by an intense few-cycle laser and have a particular spatial dependency, depending on the geometrical shape of the nanostructure. We demonstrate that the strong nonhomogeneous character of the laser enhanced field plays an important role in the HHG process and significantly extends the harmonic cutoff. Our models are based on numerical solution of the time dependent Schroedinger equation (TDSE) and s…
The generalized oscillator strengths (GOS) of discrete excitations np-nd, both dipole (L=1) and octupole (L=3) are studied, the latter for the first time. We demonstrate that although the relevant transitions in the same atom are closely located in energy, the dependence of their GOS on the momentum transfer q squared, is remarkably different, so that the GOS corresponding to L=3 have at least one extra maximum as a function of q squared and dominate over those of the L=1, starting from about q=1.25$ atomic unit (a.u.). The calculations were performed in the one particle Hartree-Fock approxima…
$γ$ spectra for positron annihilation in noble-gas atoms are calculated using many-body theory for positron momenta up to the positronium-formation threshold. This data is used, together with time-evolving positron-momentum distributions determined in [arXiv:1706.01434 (2017)], to calculate the time-varying $γ$ spectra produced during positron cooling in noble gases. The $γ$-spectra and their $\bar{S}$ and $\bar{W}$ shape parameters are shown to be sensitive probes of the time evolution of the positron momentum distribution, and thus provide a means of studying positron cooling that is complem…
We demonstrate numerically that the long-wavelength nonlinear dipole moment and ionization rate versus electric field strength $F$ for different noble gases can be scaled onto each other, revealing universal functions that characterize the form of the nonlinear response. We elucidate the physical origin of the universality by using a metastable state analysis of the light-atom interaction in combination with a scaling analysis. Our results also provide a powerful new means of characterizing the nonlinear response in the mid-infrared and long-wave infrared for optical filamentation studies.
We review experimental and theoretical work on cold, trapped metastable noble gases. We em- phasize the aspects which distinguish work with these atoms from the large body of work on cold, trapped atoms in general. These aspects include detection techniques and collision processes unique to metastable atoms. We describe several experiments exploiting these unique features in fields including atom optics and statistical physics. We also discuss precision measurements on these atoms including fine structure splittings, isotope shifts, and atomic lifetimes.
Transition of an electron from a free to a bound state is critical in determining the qualitative shape of the spectrum in high-order harmonic generation (HHG), and in tomographic imaging of orbitals. We calculate and compare the recombination amplitude, from a continuum state described by a plane wave and an outgoing scattering eigenstate, to the bound state for the noble gases that are commonly used in HHG. These calculations are based on the single active electron model and the Hartree-Fock-Slater method, using both the length form and the acceleration form of the dipole matrix element. We …
When recent experimental positronium (Ps) formation cross sections in noble gases have been compared with the most up-to date theoretical studies, the agreement is qualitative, but not quantitative. In this paper we re-examine this process and show that at low energies Ps formation must be treated nonperturbatively. We also look at Ps formation with inner shell electrons.
Rydberg spectral lines of an atom are sometimes superimposed on the continuous spectrum of a different configuration. Effects of interaction among different configurations in one of these cases are theoretically investigated, and a formula is obtained that describes the behavior of absorption spectrum intensity. This offers qualitative justification of some experimental results obtained by BEUTLER in studies of absorption arc spectra of noble gases and $I^b$ spectra of some metal vapors.
A study of the gas pressure effect in the position resolution of an interacting X- or gamma-ray photon in a gas medium is performed. The intrinsic position resolution for pure noble gases (Argon and Xenon) and their mixtures with CO2 and CH4 were calculated for several gas pressures (1-10bar) and for photon energies between 5.4 and 60.0 keV, being possible to establish a linear match between the intrinsic position resolution and the inverse of the gas pressure in that energy range. In order to evaluate the quality of the method here described, a comparison between the available experimental da…
Bose-Einstein condensation is a phenomenon well known for material particles as cold atomic gases, and this concept has in recent years been extended to photons confined in microscopic optical cavities. Essential for the operation of such a photon condensate is a thermalization mechanism that conserves the average particle number, as in the visible spectral regime can be realized by subsequent absorption re-emission processes in dye molecules. Here we report on the status of an experimental effort aiming at the extension of the concept of Bose-Einstein condensation of photons towards the vacuu…
One key parameter in the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) phenomenon is the exact frequency of the generated harmonic field. Its deviation from perfect harmonics of the laser frequency can be explained considering (i) the single-atom laser-matter interaction and (ii) the spectral changes of the driving laser. In this work, we perform an experimental and theoretical study of the causes that generate spectral changes in the HHG radiation. We measured the driving laser spectral shift after high harmonic generation in long medium using a correction factor to take into account the multiple poss…
Understanding the dynamics of positron cooling in gases, including the fraction of positrons surviving to thermalisation, is critical for accurate interpretation of positron lifetime spectra, for the development of efficient positron cooling in traps and accumulators, and for a cryogenically cooled, ultra-high-energy-resolution, trap-based positron beam. Here, positron cooling and annihilation in noble gases is simulated using accurate scattering and annihilation cross sections calculated \emph{ab initio} with many-body theory. It is shown that a strikingly small fraction of positrons survive …
A detailed analysis of the bremsstrahlung spectrum at nonrelativistic electron scattering on argon and xenon is carried out. It is shown that the approximate formulas widely used for the description of bremsstrahlung spectra lead to predictions that significantly differ from the exact results. In the limit when the photon frequency tends to zero, a rigorous proof of the relationship between the spectrum of the bremsstrahlung with a transport cross section of electron scattering on an atom is given. This proof does not require any assumptions about the dependence of the scattering phases on ene…
Quantum calculation of the collision-induced line-shape effects in antiprotonic helium and the new accurate ab initio $\bar{p}$He$^{+}$-He potential energy surface
The beta-decay of $\rm^{85}Kr$ is a significant radioactive background for experiments that use liquified noble gases to search for dark matter and measure the low-energy solar neutrino flux. While there are several proposed methods for reducing Kr levels in these experiments, an independent technique is needed for measuring very low Kr levels. By selectively exciting Kr atoms to a metastable state, capturing them in a magneto-optical trap (MOT), and detecting fluorescence from the trapped atoms, individual Kr atoms can be counted with a high signal-to-noise ratio. This approach could be used …
Noble-gas spins feature hours long coherence times owing to their great isolation from the environment, and find practical usage in various applications. However, this isolation leads to extremely slow preparation times, relying on weak spin transfer from an electron-spin ensemble. Here we propose a controllable mechanism to enhance this transfer rate. We analyze the spin dynamics of helium-3 atoms with hot, optically-excited potassium atoms and reveal the formation of quasi-bound states in resonant binary collisions. We find a resonant enhancement of the spin-exchange cross section by up to s…
