We present experimental results on the optical absorption spectra of epitaxial graphene from the visible to the terahertz (THz) frequency range. In the THz range, the absorption is dominated by intraband processes with a frequency dependence similar to the Drude model. In the near IR range, the absorption is due to interband processes and the measured optical conductivity is close to the theoretical value of $e^{2}/4\hbar$. We extract values for the carrier densities, the number of carbon atom layers, and the intraband scattering times from the measurements.
Spin-based terahertz (THz) emitters, utilizing the inverse spin Hall effect, are ultra-modern sources for the generation of THz electromagnetic radiation. To make a powerful emitter having large THz amplitude and bandwidth, fundamental understanding in terms of microscopic models is essential. This study reveals important factors to engineer the THz emission amplitude and bandwidth in epitaxial Pt/Fe emitters grown on MgO and MgAl$_2$O$_4$ (MAO) substrates, where the choice of the substrate plays an important role. The THz amplitude and bandwidth are affected by the induced strain in the Fe sp…
Charge-density wave (CDW) is one of the most fundamental quantum phenomena in solids. Different from ordinary metals in which only single particle excitations exist, CDW also has collective excitations and can carry electric current in a collective fashion. Manipulating this collective condensation for applications has long been a goal in the condensed matter and materials community. Here we show that the CDW system of 1T-TaS2 is highly sensitive to light directly from visible down to terahertz, with current responsivities around the order of ~1 AW-1 at room temperature. Our findings open a ne…
The exchange stiffness is a central material parameter of all ferromagnetic materials. Its value controls the Curie temperature as well as the dynamic properties of spin waves to a large extend. Using ultrashort spin current pulses we excite perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSW) in ultrathin epitaxial iron layers at frequencies of up to 2.4 THz. Our analysis shows that for the PSSWs the observed exchange stiffness of iron is about 20% smaller compared to the established iron bulk value. In addition, we find an interface-related reduction of the effective exchange stiffness for layers with t…

In van der Waals bonded or rotationally disordered multilayer stacks of two-dimensional (2D) materials, the electronic states remain tightly confined within individual 2D layers. As a result, electron-phonon interactions occur primarily within layers and interlayer electrical conductivities are low. In addition, strong covalent in-plane intralayer bonding combined with weak van der Waals interlayer bonding results in weak phonon-mediated thermal coupling between the layers. We demonstrate here, however, that Coulomb interactions between electrons in different layers of multilayer epitaxial gra…
Terahertz properties of mercury telluride (HgTe) films with critical thickness are presented and discussed. The density of the charge carriers is controlled using contact-free optical doping by visible light. In the magneto-optical response of HgTe the contribution of two types of carriers (electrons and holes) can be identified. The density of the electrons can be modified by light illumination by more than one order of magnitude. As the hole density is roughly illuminationindependent, the terahertz response of the illuminated samples becomes purely electronic. In some cases, light illuminati…
Artificial semiconductor heterostructures played a pivotal role in modern electronic and photonic technologies, providing a highly effective mean for the manipulation and control of carriers, from the visible to the Terahertz (THz) frequency range. Despite the exceptional versatility, they commonly require challenging epitaxial growth procedures due to the need of clean and abrupt interfaces, which proved to be a major obstacle for the realization of room-temperature (RT), high-efficiency devices, like source, detectors or modulators, especially in the far-infrared. Two-dimensional (2D) layere…
Li metal has been deposited on the surface of a Ru(0001) single crystal containing patches of monolayer-thick epitaxial graphene islands. The use of low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction allowed us to {\em in situ} monitor the process by measuring the local work function as well as to study the system in real and reciprocal space, comparing the changes taking place on the graphene with those on the bare Ru(0001) surface. It is found that Li deposition decreases the work function of the graphene islands but to a much smaller degree than of the Ru(0001) surface, as corresponds to its in…
We present a terahertz (THz) frequency-domain spectroscopic (FDS) ellipsometer design which suppresses formation of standing waves by use of stealth technology approaches. The strategy to suppress standing waves consists of three elements \textit{geometry}, \textit{coating} and \textit{modulation}. The instrument is based on the rotating analyzer ellipsometer principle and can incorporate various sample compartments, such as a superconducting magnet, \textit{in-situ} gas cells or resonant sample cavities, for example. A backward wave oscillator and three detectors are employed, which permit op…
Semiconductor compounds are widely used for water splitting applications, where photo-generated electron-hole pairs are exploited to induce catalysis. Recently, powders of a metallic oxide (Sr$_{1-x}$NbO$_3$, 0.03 < x < 0.20) have shown competitive photocatalytic efficiency, opening up the material space available for finding optimizing performance in water-splitting applications. The origin of the visible light absorption in these powders was reported to be due to an interband transition and the charge carrier separation was proposed to be due to the high carrier mobility of this material. In…
Epitaxial low temperature grown GaAs (LT-GaAs) on silicon (LT-GaAs/Si) has the potential for terahertz (THz) photoconductive antenna applications. However, crystalline, optical and electrical properties of heteroepitaxial grown LT-GaAs/Si can be very different from those grown on semi-insulating GaAs substrates (reference). In this study, we investigate optical properties of an epitaxial grown LT-GaAs/Si sample, compared to a reference grown under the same substrate temperature, and with the same layer thickness. Anti-phase domains and some crystal misorientation are present in the LT-GaAs/Si.…
