A good correlation has been found in star-forming galaxies between the soft X-ray and the far infrared or radio luminosities. In this work we analyze the relation between the soft X-ray and far infrared luminosities as predicted by evolutionary population synthesis models, aiming first to test the validity of the soft X-ray luminosity as a star formation rate estimator, using the already known calibration of the FIR luminosity as a proxy, and second proposing a calibration based on the predictions of evolutionary synthesis models. We have computed the soft X-ray and far infrared luminosities expected for a massive starburst as a function of evolutionary state, efficiency of the conversion of mechanical energy into soft X-ray luminosity, star formation regime (instantaneous or extended) and dust abundance, and have compared the predictions with observational values for a sample of 62 star-forming galaxies taken from the literature. The observational Lsoftx/Lfir ratios are consistent with the predictions by the models under realistic assumptions (young starbursts, efficiency in the re-processing of mechanical energy of few percent), confirming the direct relation of the diffuse soft X-ray emission with the star formation episode. The soft X-ray emission of the diffuse, extended gas surrounding massive star forming regions can be used as a Star Formation Rate estimator. The empirical calibrations presented in the literature are supported by the predictions of evolutionary synthesis models and by the analysis of a larger sample of star-forming galaxies, but it is biased towards galaxies dominated by relatively unevolved starbursts.
e present and analyze the correlations between mid-infrared (MIR), far-infrared (FIR), total-infrared (TIR), H$α$, and FUV luminosities for star-forming galaxies, composite galaxies and AGNs, based on a large sample of galaxies selected from the $Spitzer$ SWIRE fields. The MIR luminosities of star-forming galaxies are well correlated with their H$α$, TIR and FUV luminosities, and we re-scaled the MIR-derived SFR formulae according to the above correlations with differences less than 15%. We confirm the recent result by calzetti et al. (2007) that the combined observed H$α$ + 24$μ$m luminositie…
It has been known for two decades that a tight correlation exists between far-infrared (FIR) and radio (1.4 and 4.8 GHz) global fluxes/luminosities from galaxies, which may be explained in terms of massive star formation activities in these galaxies. For this very reason, a correlation might also exist between X-ray and FIR/radio global luminosities of galaxies. We analyze data from {\it ROSAT} All-Sky Survey and {\it IRAS} to show that such correlation does indeed exist between FIR (42.5$-122.5μ$m) and soft X-ray (0.1$-$2.4keV) luminosities in active star-forming galaxies (ASFGs).In order to …
The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) is used to carry out mid-IR (7 and 15 micron) and far-IR (90 micron) observations of a sample of star-forming sub-mJy radio sources. By selecting the sample at radio wavelengths, one avoids biases due to dust obscuration. It is found that the mid-IR luminosities, covering the PAH features, measure the star formation rate for galaxies with $P_{1.4 GHz} < 10^{23}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. This is further confirmed using the H$α$ luminosities. The far-IR emission is also found to trace the SFR over the whole range of radio and H$α$ luminosities. The implication of the mid…
In Paper I we showed that multi-phase gaseous halos of late-type spiral galaxies, detected in the radio continuum, in Halpha, and in X-rays, are remarkably well correlated regarding their morphology and spatial extent. In this work we present new results from a statistical analysis in order to specify and quantify these phenomenological relations. This is accomplished by investigating soft X-ray (0.3-2.0keV) luminosities, FIR, radio continuum, Halpha, B-band, and UV luminosities for a sample of 23 edge-on late-type spiral galaxies. Typical star formation indicators, such as SFRs, are determine…
Radio and far infrared luminosities of star-forming galaxies follow a tight linear relation. Making use of ASCA and BeppoSAX observations of a well-defined sample of nearby star-forming galaxies, we argue that tight linear relations hold between the X-ray, radio and far infrared luminosities. The effect of intrinsic absorption is investigated taking NGC3256 as a test case. It is suggested that the hard X-ray emission is directly related to the Star Formation Rate. Star formation processes may also account for most of the 2-10 keV emission from LLAGNs of lower X-ray luminosities (for the same F…
We present evidence that the 8 $μ$m (dust) and 24 $μ$m luminosities of star-forming galaxies are both strongly correlated with their 1.4 GHz and H$α$ luminosities over a range in luminosity of two-to-three orders of magnitude. At the bright end, the correlations are found to be essentially linear over a luminosity range of about two orders of magnitude (corresponding to star-formation rates of several-tenths to several tens of solar masses per year). However, at the faint end, there appears to be a slope change for dwarf galaxies, possibly due to the lower dust-to-gas ratios and lower metallic…
I briefly report on the X-ray detection of 10 radio sub-mJy sources in the 2 Ms Chandra observation of the Hubble Deep Field North region. These sources follow the same radio/X-ray luminosities relation which holds for nearby galaxies. Making use of this relation, X-ray number counts from star forming galaxies are predicted from the deep radio Log N-Log S's.
We modify polar cap cascade picture to include the ICS of the higher generation pairs. In such a ``full-cascade'' scenario, not only the perpendicular portion of the energy of the pairs goes to high energy radiation via SR, but the parallel portion of the energy of the pairs can also contribute to high energy emission via ICS with the soft thermal photons from either the full neutron star surface or the hot polar cap. An important output of such a scenario is that the soft tail of the ICS spectrum can naturally result in a non-thermal X-ray component which can contribute to the luminosities ob…
We report the detection of hard X-ray emission (>2 keV) from a number of point sources associated with the very young massive star-forming region IRAS 19410+2336. The X-ray emission is detected from several sources located around the central and most deeply embedded mm continuum source, which remains undetected in the X-ray regime. All X-ray sources have K-band counterparts, and those likely belonging to the evolving massive cluster show near-infrared colors in the 2MASS data indicative of pre-main-sequence stages. The X-ray luminosities around 10^{31} erg/s are at the upper end of luminositie…
We derive composite luminosity functions (LF) for galaxies in groups and examine the behaviour of the LF as a function of group luminosity (used as an indicator of group or halo mass). We consider both the entire galaxy population and split galaxies into red and blue (quiescent and star forming) samples, in order to examine possible mechanisms behind observed variations of galaxy properties with environment. We find evidence that $M^*$ brightens and $α$ steepens with group luminosity, until a threshold value where the LF parameters stabilize at those found in rich clusters. The effect is seen …
We present the first results of our HST WFPC2 F814W snapshot imaging survey, targeting virtually all sub-mJy decimetric radio-selected star-forming galaxies. The radio selection at ~1 GHz is free from extinction effects and the radio luminosities are largely unaffected by AGN contamination, making these galaxies ideal tracers of the cosmic star formation history. A sub-sample of 4 targets is presented here, selected at 1.4 GHz from the spectroscopically homogenous and complete samples of Benn et al. (1993) and Hopkins et al. (1999). The redshifts are confined to a narrow range around z~0.2, to…
We present the observed correlations between rest-frame 8, 24, 70 and 160 um monochromatic luminosities and measured total infrared luminosities L_IR of galaxies detected by Spitzer. Our sample consists of 372 star-forming galaxies with individual detections and flux measurements at 8, 24, 70 and 160 um. We have spectroscopic redshifts for 93% of these sources, and accurate photometric redshifts for the remainder. We also used a stacking analysis to measure the IR fluxes of fainter sources at higher redshifts. We show that the monochromatic mid and far-infrared luminosities are strongly correl…
We present the optical spectra and simple statistical analysis for a complete sample of 110 soft X-ray selected AGN. About half of the sources are Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), which have the steepest X-ray spectra, strongest FeII emission and slightly weaker [OIII]5007 emission than broad line Seyfert 1s (BLS1s). Kolmogorov Smirnov tests show that NLS1s and BLS1s have clearly different distributions of the X-ray spectral slope, X-ray short-term variability, and FeII equivalent widths and luminosity and FeII/H-beta ratios. The differences in the [OIII]/H-beta and [OIII] equivalent wi…
We present results of near-IR spectroscopic measurements of 7 star-forming galaxies at 2.1<z<2.5. Drawn from a large spectroscopic survey of galaxies photometrically pre-selected by their U_nGR colors to lie at z~2, these galaxies were chosen for their bright rest-frame optical luminosities (K_s<=20.0). Most strikingly, the majority of the sample of 7 galaxies exhibit [NII]/Ha nebular emission line ratios indicative of at least solar HII region metallicities, at a lookback time of 10.5 Gyr. The broadband colors of the K_s-bright sample indicate that most have been forming stars for more than a…
Observed intensities and inferred distances of soft gamma repeaters imply luminosities in excess of the nominal (electron-scattering opacity) Eddington limit by four to six orders of magnitude. I review the physical basis of this limit. Accretional luminosities may exceed it if energy is hydrodynamically coupled from accreting matter to closed field lines where it forms a pair gas. This magnetically confined pair gas radiates roughly a black body spectrum with $k_B T_e \approx 23$ KeV, consistent with observations, at a luminosity up to $\sim 3 \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for a surface field …
A systematic study of a large sample of sources, covering a wide range in galactocentric distances, masses and luminosities, is a fast and efficient way of obtaining a good overview of the different stages of high-mass star formation. With these goals in mind, we have started a survey of 40 color selected IRAS sources south of -20 degrees declination with the APEX telescope on Chajnantor, Chile. Our first APEX results already demonstrate that the selection criteria were successful, since some of the sources are very rich in molecular lines.
We consider the fuelling of the central massive black hole in Active Galactic Nuclei, through an inhomogeneous accretion flow. Performing simple analytical treatments, we show that shocks between elements (clumps) forming the accretion flow may account for the UV and X-ray emission in AGNs. In this picture, a cascade of shocks is expected, where optically thick shocks give rise to optical/UV emission, while optically thin shocks give rise to X-ray emission. The resulting blue bump temperature is found to be quite similar in different AGNs. We obtain that the ratio of X-ray luminosity to UV lum…
The Palomar Integral Field Spectrograph was used to probe a variety of environments in nine nearby galaxies that span a range of morphological types, luminosities, metallicities, and infrared-to-blue ratios. For the first time, near-infrared spectroscopy was obtained for nuclear or bright HII regions in star-forming galaxies over two spatial dimensions (5.7"x10.0") in the [FeII] (1.257um), [FeII] (1.644um), Paschen beta (1.282um), H2 (2.122um), and Brackett gamma (2.166um) transition lines. These data yield constraints on various characteristics of the star-forming episodes in these regions, i…
A search for star forming objects belonging to tidal tails has been carried out in a sample of deep Halpha images of 16 compact groups of galaxies. A total of 36 objects with Halpha luminosity larger than 10^38 erg s-1 have been detected in five groups. The fraction of the total Halpha luminosity of their respective parent galaxies shown by the tidal objects is always below 5% except for the tidal features of HCG95, whose Halpha luminosity amounts to 65% of the total luminosity. Out of this 36 objects, 9 star forming tidal dwarf galaxy candidates have been finally identified on the basis of th…
We report results of a Chandra observation of the X-ray luminous star-forming galaxy Arp299 (NGC3690/IC694). We detect 18 discrete X-ray sources with luminosities above ~10^39 erg\s (0.5-8.0 keV band), which contribute ~40% of the total galactic emission in this band. The remaining emission is associated with a diffuse component spatially coincident with regions of widespread star-formation. We detect X-ray emission from both nuclei. One of the discrete sources within the complex nuclear region of NGC 3690 is found to have a very hard spectrum and therefore we associate it with the origin of t…
We present results from the cross-correlation of the spectroscopic atlas of Ho etal (1995) with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalogue, in an attempt to understand the X-ray emission mechanisms in nearby galaxies. The resulting sample of 45 galaxies consists predominantly of AGN. However, there are several starforming galaxies spanning a wide range of X-ray luminosities (~10^{38} - 10^{42} erg s^{-1}). We have analyzed ROSAT and ASCA data for the two most luminous star-forming galaxies, namely NGC3310 and NGC3690. We find that their 0.1-10 keV X-ray spectra can be fitted by a soft th…
Rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) luminosities form the `backbone' of our understanding of star formation at all cosmic epochs. FUV luminosities are typically corrected for dust by assuming that extinction indicators which have been calibrated for local starbursting galaxies apply to all star-forming galaxies. I present evidence that `normal' star-forming galaxies have systematically redder UV/optical colors than starbursting galaxies at a given FUV extinction. This is attributed to differences in star/dust geometry, coupled with a small contribution from older stellar populations. Folding in d…
(ABRIDGED) AIMS: We searched for X-ray signatures of AGN in a sample of star-forming, relatively early-type, nearby spiral galaxies. Such galaxies are likely to host nuclear super-massive black holes. METHODS: For 9 sources from the Ho et al. optical sample, we isolated 10 individual Chandra X-ray sources closest to the optical position and calculated X-ray luminosities, Lx, X-ray colours, and, using Halpha luminosities, star formation rates. For 4 sources with sufficient counts, we extracted X-ray spectra and fitted standard spectral models. We assessed the significance of adding an Fe K alph…
In neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries the transitions between the two spectral states, hard and soft, signals the change between accretion via a hot advection-dominated flow(ADAF) and disk accretion. In a few cases the hard/soft transition were observed during the rise to the nova outburst, mostly only the soft/hard transition during the luminosity decrease. Surprisingly the luminosities at the second transition is always lower by a factor of 3 to 5. A model for this hysteresis was presented in a preceding paper: It was shown that this switch in the accretion mode at different mass acc…
Using the multiwavelength photometric and spectroscopic data covering the CDF-S obtained within the GOODS, we investigate the rest-frame UV properties of galaxies to z~2.2, including the evolution of the luminosity function, the luminosity density, star formation rate (SFR) and galaxy morphology. We find a significant brightening (~ 1 mag) in the rest-frame 2800A characteristic magnitude (M*) over the redshift range 0.3<z<1.7 and no evolution at higher redshifts. The rest-frame 2800A luminosity density shows an increase by a factor ~4 to z~2.2. We estimate the SFR to z~2.2 from the 1500A and 2…
The association of some short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with elliptical galaxies established that their progenitors, unlike those of long GRBs, belong to an old stellar population. However, the majority of short GRBs appear to occur in star forming galaxies, raising the possibility that some progenitors are related to recent star formation activity. Here we present optical spectroscopy of these hosts and measure their luminosities, star formation rates, and metallicities. We find luminosities of L_B~0.1-1.5 L*, star formation rates of SFR~0.2-6 M_sun/yr, and metallicities of 12+log(O/H)…
New NTT/EMMI spectrophotometry of single WN2-5 stars in the Magellanic Clouds are presented, from which HeII 4686 line luminosities have been derived, and compared with observations of other Magellanic Cloud WR stars. SMC WN3-4 stars possess line luminosities which are a factor of 4 times lower than LMC counterparts, incorporating several binary SMC WN3-4 stars. Similar results are found for WN5-6 stars, despite reduced statistics, incorporating observations of single LMC WN5-9 stars. CIV 5808 line luminosities of carbon sequence WR stars in the SMC and IC1613 (both WO subtypes) are a factor o…
We use HST NICMOS continuum and Pa-alpha observations to study the near-infrared and star-formation properties of a representative sample of 30 local (d ~ 35-75Mpc) luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs, infrared 8-1000um luminosities of L_IR=11-11.9[Lsun]). The data provide spatial resolutions of 25-50pc and cover the central ~3.3-7.1kpc regions of these galaxies. About half of the LIRGs show compact (~1-2kpc) Pa-alpha emission with a high surface brightness in the form of nuclear emission, rings, and mini-spirals. The rest of the sample show Pa-alpha emission along the disk and the spiral arms e…
We present UV (2300 Ang) images, obtained with the HST Faint Object Camera, of the central 20'' of five galaxies containing circumnuclear star-forming rings. The five galaxies are from a well-defined sample of 103 normal, nearby galaxies we have observed with HST. At the HST resolution (0.05''), the rings break up into discrete star-forming clumps, each composed of many luminous and compact ($R \ltorder 5$ pc) star clusters. These objects are similar to those that have been recently reported in colliding and starburst galaxies, and in several other circumnuclear rings. A large fraction, 15%--5…
Extragalactic water vapor masers with 50, 1000, 1, and 230 solar (isotropic) luminosities were detected toward Mrk1066 (UGC2456), Mrk34, NGC3556 and Arp299, respectively. The interacting system Arp299 appears to show two maser hotspots separated by 20 arcsec. A statistical analysis of 53 extragalactic H2O sources indicates (1) that the correlation between IRAS Point Source and H2O luminosities, established for individual star forming regions in the galactic disk, also holds for AGN dominated megamaser galaxies, (2) that maser luminosities are not correlated with 60/100 micron color temperature…
The study of massive star formation needs some basic tools, among which reliable SFR tracers are crucial ones. We are presently revising the calibration of SFR tracers at different wavelength ranges using last generation evolutionary population synthesis codes. The FIR luminosity produced by the heated dust in star forming regions is commonly used to characterize a starburst. The X-ray luminosity has been found to show a narrow correlation with it, and therefore it has been proposed as an additional tracer of potential interest for high $z$ galaxies, whose FIR emission is redshifted to the sub…
Extended, soft X-ray emission from the halo of a very large disk galaxy has been detected out to r~20-40 kpc. The luminosity and surface brightness distribution is in very good agreement with predictions by recent, cosmological galaxy formation models. Predictions of Ly-alpha emission, associated with ``cold'' accretion of filamentary gas onto galaxies, are presented. In particular these predictions are compared to the properties of a recently detected Ly-alpha ``blob'', which shows no obvious continuum counter-part in any of 12 broad-bands, from X-rays (Chandra) to infrared (Spitzer). Finally…
An important parameter for the distinction of X-ray flashes, X-ray rich bursts and Gamma-ray bursts in the rest frame is the distance to the explosion site. Here we report on the spectroscopic redshift determination of the host galaxy of XRF/GRB 030528 using the ESO VLT FORS2 instrument. From the strong oxygen and hydrogen emission lines the redshift was measured to be z=0.782+-0.001. Obtaining the line luminosities and ratios we find that the host is consistent with being an actively star forming galaxy with sub-solar metallicity. With a stellar mass of ~10E10 Msun the host is placed among th…
We present preliminary results of H_alpha near-infrared spectroscopy of six galaxies with redshifts z ~ 1 drawn from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey. The spectra have been taken with the multi-slit mode of LIRIS (Long-slit Intermediate Resolution Infrared Spectrograph) installed at the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. This is a pilot study for a larger program to obtain H_alpha luminosities of about 50 star-forming galaxies at z ~ 1, with the aim of deriving the corresponding star formation rates (SFRs) from H_alpha as well as studying the relationship with other SFR indicators. The new gala…
We present maps of seven sources selected from Klaassen & Wilson (2007a) in SiO (J=8-7) and HCO$^+$ and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (J=4-3) which were obtained using HARP-B on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find that four out of our seven sources have infall signatures based on their HCO$^+$ emission profiles. From our maps, we have determined the extent of both the outflowing and infalling regions towards these sources, and constrained the amount of infalling and outflowing mass as well as the mass infall rate for each massive star forming region. From our SiO observations, we estimate the source l…
We modify the conventional curvature radiation (inverse Compton scattering) + synchrotron radiation polar cap cascade model by including the inverse Compton scattering of the higher generation pairs. Within the framework of the space-charge-limited-flow acceleration model with frame-dragging proposed by Harding & Muslimov (1998), such a full polar cap cascade scenario can well reproduce the $L_γ\propto (L_{\rm sd})^{1/2}$ and the $L_x \sim 10^{-3} L_{\rm sd}$ dependences observed from the known spin-powered pulsars. According to this model, the ``pulsed'' soft ROSAT-band X-rays from most of th…
We have examined ROSAT soft X-ray observations of a complete, distance-limited sample of Seyfert and LINER galaxies. X-ray data are available for 46 out of 60 such objects which lie within a hemisphere of radius 18 Mpc. We have constructed radial profiles of the nuclear sources in order to characterize their spatial extent and, in some cases, to help constrain the amount of flux associated with a nuclear point source. PSPC data from ROSAT have been used to explore the spectral characteristics of the objects with sufficient numbers of detected counts. Based on the typical spectral parameters of…
(Abridged) We have used optical spectroscopy to investigate the radio- selected active galaxy populations in a sample of 20 nearby Abell clusters. The spectra were used to characterize the galaxies as AGN or galaxies forming stars at rates comparable to or greater than the Milky Way. A significant population of star forming galaxies with large amounts of nuclear dust extinction were revealed. This extinction eliminates bluer emission lines such as [OII], meaning their star formation could easily be overlooked in studies which focus on such features. Around 20% of cluster star forming galaxies …
We present the rest-frame optical and infrared colours of a complete sample of 1114 z<0.3 galaxies from the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic Legacy Survey (SWIRE) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We discuss the optical and infrared colours of our sample and analyse in detail the contribution of dusty star-forming galaxies and AGN to optically selected red sequence galaxies. We propose that the optical (g-r) colour and infrared log(L_{24}/L_{3.6}) colour of galaxies in our sample are determined primarily by a bulge-to-disk ratio. The (g-r) colour is found to be sensitive to the …
Hydrogen cyanide emission in the J=1-0 transition has been detected at redshift z=2.2858 in IRAS F10214+4724 using the Green Bank Telescope . This is the second detection of HCN emission at high redshift. The large HCN line luminosity in F10214 is similar to that in the Cloverleaf (z=2.6) and the ultra-luminous infrared galaxies Mrk231 and Arp220. This is also true of the ratio of HCN to CO luminosities. The ratio of far-infrared luminosity to HCN luminosity, an indicator of the star formation rate per solar mass of dense gas, follows the correlation found for normal spirals and infrared lumin…
An enigmatic, small class of IR and X-ray luminous sources, named ``Composite'' starburst/Seyfert galaxies, has been defined from IRAS and RASS data. The objects have optical spectra dominated by the features of HII galaxies (plus, in some cases, weak Seyfert signatures) but X-ray luminosities higher than expected from starbursts and more typical of Seyfert nuclei. The true nature of this class of objects is still unknown. We present Chandra data of four of these galaxies that were obtained to investigate the nature of the X-ray source. The X-ray spectrum, the lack of any significant extended …
Rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) luminosities form the `backbone' of our understanding of star formation at all cosmic epochs. These luminosities are typically corrected for dust by assuming that the tight relationship between the UV spectral slopes and the FUV attenuations of starburst galaxies applies for all star-forming galaxies. Data from seven independent UV experiments demonstrates that quiescent, `normal' star-forming galaxies deviate substantially from the starburst galaxy spectral slope-attenuation correlation, in the sense that normal galaxies are redder than starbursts. Spatially r…
We report the detection of water maser emission from four nearby galaxies hosting ultradense HII (UDHII) regions, He 2-10, the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039), NGC 4214, and NGC 5253, with the Green Bank Telescope. Our detection rate is 100%, and all of these H2O "kilomasers" (L(H2O) < 10 L_sun) are located toward regions of known star formation as traced by UDHII regions and bright 24 micron emission. Some of the newly discovered H2O masers have luminosities 1-2 orders of magnitude less than previous extragalactic studies and the same order of magnitude as those typical of Galactic massive …
Formic acid is much more abundant in the solid state, both in interstellar ices and cometary ices, than in the interstellar gas (ice/gas ~ 10^{4}) and this point remains a puzzle. The goal of this work is to experimentally study ionization and photodissociation processes of HCOOH (formic acid), a glycine precursor molecule. The measurements were taken at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), employing soft X-ray photons from toroidal grating monochromator TGM) beamline (200 - 310 eV). Mass spectra were obtained using photoelectron photoion coincidence (PEPICO) method. Kinetic ener…
We report results of soft gamma-ray observations of the ultraluminous infrared galaxies Arp 220, Mrk 273, and Mrk 231 in order to test whether the infrared radiation from these sources originates from buried active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Only upper limits are measured, implying that the emergent soft gamma-ray luminosities are 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than the infrared luminosities. Monte Carlo simulations of radiation transport through tori are used to infer the minimum column densities $N_H$ required to block transmission of soft gamma-rays from a buried AGN, assuming that spectra of…
We present a new model for computing consistently the line and continuum emission from galaxies, based on a combination of recent population synthesis and photoionization codes. We use effective parameters to describe the HII regions and the diffuse gas ionized by single stellar generations in a galaxy [...]. We calibrate the nebular properties of our model using the observed [OIII]/Hbeta, [OII]/[OIII], [SII]/Halpha, and [NII]/[SII] ratios of a representative sample of nearby spiral and irregular, starburst, and HII galaxies. To compute whole (line plus continuum) spectral energy distributions…
We analyzed the regions of star formation in the spiral galaxies NGC 3184 and NGC 3938 from archive images at multiple wavelengths (NUV from GALEX, H-alpha from JKT and KPNO, 8 and 24 um from Spitzer, and CO from BIMA). We used the Clump Find Algorithm to extract the properties of the star forming tracers shown as emission regions at each wavelength. We obtained a power-law relation between the luminosity and the emission region volume that scales as expected, $L proportional to V, for the H-alpha and NUV emission; but much faster for the dust (8 and 24 um) and molecular gas emitting regions i…
Emission line spectra from HII regions are often used to study properties of the gas in star-forming regions, as well as temperatures and luminosities of the ionising sources. Empirical diagnostics for the interpretation of observational data must often be calibrated with the aid of photoionisation models. Most studies so far have been carried out by assuming spherical or plane-parallel geometries, with major limitations on allowed gas and dust density distributions and with the spatial distribution of multiple, non-centrally-located ionising sources not being accounted for. We present the fir…
To help understand the effects of galaxy interactions on star formation, we analyze Spitzer infrared and GALEX ultraviolet images of the interacting galaxy pair Arp 82 (NGC 2535/6), and compare to a numerical simulation of the interaction. We investigate the UV and IR properties of several star forming regions (clumps). Using the FUV/NUV colors of the clumps we constrain the ages. The 8 micron and 24 micron luminosities are used to estimate the far-infrared luminosities and the star formation rates of the clumps. We investigate possible gradients in the UV and IR colors. See Smith et al. (2006…
We report the discovery of several new OB/X-ray accreting binary candidates. These massive systems were found by cross-correlating in position SIMBAD OB star catalogues with the part of the ROSAT all-sky survey located at low galactic latitudes (|b| < 20d) and selecting the early type stars which apparently displayed the most significant excess of X-ray emission over the `normal' stellar level. The present search is restricted to stars earlier than B6 and X-ray luminosities > 10^31 erg/s. Follow-up optical and X-ray observations allowed to remove misidentified OB stars and spurious matches wit…
We tabulate the luminosities of the soft-to-hard state transitions of all X-ray binaries for which there exist good X-ray flux measurements at the time of the transition, good distance estimates, and good mass estimates for the compact star. We show that the state transition luminosities are at about 1-4% of the Eddington rate, markedly smaller than those typically quoted in the literature, with a mean value of 2%. Only the black hole candidate GRO J~1655-40 and the neutron star systems Aql X-1 and 4U 1728-34 have measured state transition luminosities inconsistent with this value at the 1$σ$ …
We present results of optical spectroscopic and photometric observation of the pre-main sequence stars associated with the cometary shaped dark cloud Lynds 1622, and 12CO and 13CO observations of the cloud. We determined the effective temperatures and luminosities of 14 pre-main sequence stars associated with the cloud from their positions in the Hertzsprung--Russell diagram, as well as constructed their spectral energy distributions using optical, 2MASS and Spitzer IRAC and MIPS data. We derived physical parameters of L1622 from the molecular observations. Our results are not compatible with …
The existence or otherwise of X-ray luminous star-forming galaxies has been an open question since the era of the Einstein satellite. Various authors have claimed the discovery of X-ray luminous star-forming galaxies but in many cases more careful spectroscopic studies of these objects have shown that many of them are in fact obscured AGN. In order to investigate the possibility that such a class of galaxies do exist, we have carried out a cross-correlation between optical and IRAS samples of galaxies which are known to contain large numbers of star-forming galaxies and catalogs of sources det…
Evolution of galaxies through cosmic time has been widely studied at high redshift, but there are a few studies in this field at lower redshifts. However, low-redshifts studies will provide important clues to the evolution of galaxies, furnishing the required link between local and high-redshift universe. In this work we focus on the metallicity of the gas in spiral galaxies at low redshift looking for signs of chemical evolution. We analyze the metallicity contents of star forming galaxies of similar luminosities at different redshifts, we studied the metallicity of star forming galaxies from…
(abridged) The present work is a first step to collect homogeneous abundances and near-infrared (NIR) luminosities for a sample of dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies, located in nearby groups. The use of NIR luminosities is intended to provide a better proxy to mass than the blue luminosities commonly used in the literature; in addition, selecting group members reduces the impact of uncertain distances. Accurate abundances are derived to assess the galaxy metallicity. Optical spectra are collected for Hii regions in the dIrrs, allowing the determination of oxygen abundances by means of the temper…
The cluster DC0107-46 (Abell 2877) lies within the Phoenix Deep Survey, made at 1.4 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Of 89 known optical cluster members, 70 lie within the radio survey area. Of these 70 galaxies, 15 (21%) are detected, with luminosities as faint as 10^20 W/Hz. Spectroscopic observations are available for 14/15 of the radio-detected cluster galaxies. Six galaxies show only absorption features and are typical low-luminosity AGN radio sources. One galaxy hosts a Seyfert 2 nucleus, two are star-forming galaxies, and the remaining five may be star-forming galaxies, A…
The decimetric radio continuum luminosity of a star-forming galaxy appears to be directly proportional to the rate of formation of supernovae in the galaxy. Since decimetric radiation does not suffer significant extinction and is not directive, radio luminosities may thus provide a particularly straightforward way to determine the current rate of star formation. Using a sample of over 700 local galaxies we confirm the utility of the radio luminosity as a measure of star formation rate by showing concordance with the rates predicted by U-band, H-alpha, and far-infrared luminosites. We also show…
We report on infrared K- (2-2.5 micron) and L-band (2.8-4.1 micron) slit spectroscopy of 23 Seyfert 1 galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature at 3.3 micron in the L band is primarily used to investigate nuclear star-forming activity in these galaxies. The 3.3 micron PAH emission is detected in 10 sources (=43%), demonstrating that detection of nuclear star-formation in a significant fraction of Seyfert 1 galaxies is now feasible. For the PAH-detected nuclei, the surface brightness values of the PAH emission are as high as those of typ…
