The signal of isospin-asymmetric phase transition in the evolution of the chemical potential was observed for hot quasi-projectiles produced in the reactions 40,48Ca + 27Al confirming an analogous observation in the lighter system 28Si + 112,124Sn. With increasing mass, the properties of hot quasi-projectiles become increasingly influenced by the secondary emission. Thermodynamical observables exhibit no sensitivity to the different number of missing neutrons in the two reactions 40,48Ca + 27Al, thus providing a signal of dynamical emission of neutrons, which can be related to formation of a very neutron-rich low-density region (neck) between the projectile and target.
In [1,2]the observed decrease in spectral peak energies of IMFs emitted from hot nuclei was interpreted in terms of a breakup density that decreased with increasing energy. Subsequently, Raduta et al. [3] performed MMM simulations that showed decreasing spectral peaks could be obtained at constant density. In this letter we examine this apparent inconsistency.
The role played by the heaviest fragment in partitions of multifragmenting hot nuclei is emphasized. Its size/charge distribution (mean value, fluctuations and shape) gives information on properties of fragmenting nuclei and on the associated phase transition.
The dynamics and thermodynamics of phase transition in hot nuclei are studied through experimental results on multifragmentation of heavy systems (A>200) formed in central heavy ion collisions. Different signals indicative of a phase transition studied in the INDRA collaboration are presented and their consistency is stressed.

Recent advancement on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei is reported. It concerns i) the influence of radial collective energy on fragment partitions and the derivation of general properties of partitions in presence of such a collective energy, ii) a better knowledge of freeze-out properties obtained by means of a simulation based on all the available experimental information and iii) the quantitative study of the bimodal behaviour of the heaviest fragment charge distribution for fragmenting hot heavy quasi-projectiles which allows, for the first time, to …
Thanks to the high detection quality of the INDRA array, signatures related to the dynamics (spinodal decomposition) and thermodynamics (negative microcanonical heat capacity) of a liquid-gas phase transition have been simultaneously studied in multifragmentation events in the Fermi energy domain. The correlation between both types of signals strongly supports the existence of a first order phase transition for hot nuclei.
Recent important progress on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei, thanks to the high detection quality of the INDRA array, is reported. It concerns i) the radial collective energies involved in hot fragmenting nuclei/sources produced in central and semi- peripheral collisions and their influence on the observed fragment partitions, ii) a better knowledge of freeze-out properties obtained by means of a simulation based on all the available experimental information and iii) the quantitative study of the bimodal behaviour of the heaviest fragment distribution f…
The richness of the data set, collected by the INDRA collaboration during the last twenty years, enabled us to build a set of caloric curves for nuclei of various sizes, by using, for the first time, a single experimental set-up and a single experimental protocol. We will therefore present the different caloric curves ($E^{\ast}-T$) obtained by a new calorimetry, for Quasi-Projectiles produced by symmetric or quasi symmetric reactions at different incident energies (Au+Au, Xe+Sn, Ni+Ni). For all these systems, a clear change of the de-excitation process of hot nuclei is observed but this one i…
Today, we have a variety of reactions at hand that can be used to multi-fragment nuclei. In many of these reactions even several sources of fragments can be discerned and characterized. There is overwhelming evidence that these sources of fragments are hot. It is already less clear whether heat by itself is sufficient to initiate the fragment decay. What causes fragmentation, and when and how are the fragments (pre)formed? These questions have remained as much a challenge as the complementary class of questions to which they are related: What observations derive their significance from the liq…
The systematics of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) widths in hot and rotating nuclei are studied in terms of temperature T, angular momentum J and mass A. The different experimental data in the temperature range of 1 - 2 MeV have been compared with the thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM) in the liquid drop formalism using a modified approach to estimate the average values of T, J and A in the decay of the compound nucleus. The values of the ground state GDR widths have been extracted from the TSFM parametrization in the liquid drop limit for the corrected T, J and A for a given system and …
Clustering is a relatively widespread phenomena which takes on many guises across the nuclear landscape. Selected topics concerning the study of halo systems and clustering in light, neutron-rich nuclei are discussed here through illustrative examples taken from the Be isotopic chain.
Selected topics on halo and molecular states in light, neutron-rich nuclei are discussed. In particular, work on $xα$:X$n$ structures is briefly reviewed. The use of proton radiative capture as a probe of clustering is also presented through the example provided by the $^6$He(p,$γ$) reaction.
The JYFLTRAP mass spectrometer was used to measure the masses of neutron-rich nuclei in the region between N = 28 to N = 82 with uncertainties better than 10 keV. The impacts on nuclear structure and the r-process paths are reviewed.
A rather new approach employing Monte Carlo GEANT simulation for converting the experimentally measured fold distribution to angular momentum distribution has been described. The technique has been successfully utilized to measure the angular momentum of the compound nucleus formed in the reaction 4He + 115In --> 119Sb at E_Lab = 35 MeV. A 50 element gamma multiplicity filter, fabricated in-house, was used to measure experimentally the required fold distribution. The present method has been compared with the other ones exiting in the literature and relative merits have been discussed.
I attempt to experimentally evaluate the prospects of synthesizing new neutron- rich superheavy nuclei. I consider three possible synthetic paths to neutron- rich superheavy nuclei: (a) the use of neutron-rich radioactive beams. (b) the use of damped collisions and (c) the use of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. I consider the prospects of synthesizing new n-rich isotopes of Rf-Bh using light n-rich radioactive beams and targeted beams from ReA3, FRIB and SPIRAL2. For the damped collision path, I present the results of a study of a surrogate reaction, 160Gd + 186W. These data indicate the for…
The pairing gaps, heat capacities and level densities are calculated within the BCS-based quasiparticle approach including the effect of thermal fluctuations on the pairing field within the pairing model plus noncollective rotation along the z axis for $^{60}$Ni and $^{72}$Ge nuclei. The analysis of the numerical results obtained shows that, in addition to the pairing gap, the heat capacity can also serve as a good observable to detect the appearance of the pairing reentrance in hot rotating nuclei, whereas such signature in the level density is rather weak.
The development of nuclear shapes under the extreme conditions of high spin and/or temperature is examined. Scaling properties are used to demonstrate universal properties of both thermal expectation values of nuclear shapes as well as the minima of the free energy, which can be used to understand the Jacobi transition. A universal correlation between the width of the giant dipole resonance and quadrupole deformation is found, providing a novel probe to measure the nuclear deformation in hot nuclei.
The fragmentation of neutron-rich 132Sn nuclei produced in the fission of 238U projectiles at 950 MeV/u has been investigated at the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. This work represents the first investigation of fragmentation of medium-mass radioactive projectiles with a large neutron excess. The measured production cross sections of the residual nuclei are relevant for the possible use of a two-stage reaction scheme (fission+fragmentation) for the production of extremely neutron-rich medium-mass nuclei in future rare-ion-beam facilities. Moreover, the new data will provide a better understa…
The three-body description of two-neutron halo nuclei relies on the two-body interactions between the constituents. In order to provide constraints on calculations devoted to $^{14}$Be and $^{17}$B, neutron unbound states of $^{13}$Be and $^{16}$B have been investigated by one-proton knockout. The experimental techniques and results are discussed here.
We point out that during the supernova II type explosion the thermodynamical condition of stellar matter between the protoneutron star and the shock front corresponds to the nuclear liquid-gas phase coexistence region, which can be investigated in nuclear multifragmentation reactions. We have demonstrated, that neutron-rich hot heavy nuclei can be produced in this region. The production of these nuclei may influence dynamics of the explosion and contribute to the synthesis of heavy elements.
This review article is focused on the tremendous progress realized during the last fifteen years in the understanding of multifragmentation and its relationship to the liquid-gas phase diagram of nuclei and nuclear matter. The explosion of the whole nucleus, early predicted by Bohr [N. Bohr, Nature 137 (1936) 351], is a very complex and rich subject which continues to fascinate nuclear physicists as well as theoreticians who extend the thermodynamics of phase transitions to finite systems.
In the domain of Fermi energy, the hot nucleus temperature can be determined by using the energy spectra of evaporated light charged particles. But this method of measurement is not without difficulties both theoretical and experimental. The presented study aims to disentangle the respective influences of different factors on the quality of this measurement : the physics, the detection (a 4? detector array as INDRA) and the experimental procedure. This analysis demonstrates the possibility of determining from an energy spectrum, with an accuracy of about 10 %, the true apparent temperature fel…
The decrease in the symmetry energy of hot nuclei populated in $^{58}$Ni + $^{58}$Ni, $^{58}$Fe + $^{58}$Ni and $^{58}$Fe + $^{58}$Fe reactions at beam energies of 30, 40, and 47 MeV/nucleon, as a function of excitation energy is studied. It is observed that this decrease is mainly a consequence of increasing expansion or decreasing density rather than the increasing temperature. The results are in good agreement with the recently reported microscopic calculation based on the Thomas-Fermi approach. An empirical relation to study the symmetry energy of finite nuclei in various mass region is pr…
A production mechanism of highly excited nuclei formed in violent collisions in the Fermi energy domain is investigated. The collision of two nuclei is decomposed into several stages which are treated separately. Simplified exciton concept is used for the description of pre-equilibrium emission. A modified spectator-participant scenario is used where motion along classical Coulomb trajectories is assumed. The participant and one of the spectator zones undergo incomplete fusion. Excitation energies of both cold and hot fragment are determined. Results of the calculation are compared to recent e…
The results of measurements of the production of neutron-rich nuclei by the fragmentation of a 76-Ge beam are presented. The cross sections were measured for a large range of nuclei including fifteen new isotopes that are the most neutron-rich nuclides of the elements chlorine to manganese (50-Cl, 53-Ar, 55,56-K, 57,58-Ca, 59,60,61-Sc, 62,63-Ti, 65,66-V, 68-Cr, 70-Mn). The enhanced cross sections of several new nuclei relative to a simple thermal evaporation framework, previously shown to describe similar production cross sections, indicates that nuclei in the region around 62-Ti might be more…
Production cross sections for neutron-rich nuclei from the fragmentation of a 76Ge beam at 132 MeV/u were measured. The longitudinal momentum distributions of 34 neutron-rich isotopes of elements 13 <= Z <= 27 were scanned using a novel experimental approach of varying the target thickness. Production cross sections with beryllium and tungsten targets were determined for a large number of nuclei including 15 isotopes first observed in this work. These are the most neutron-rich nuclides of the elements 17 <= Z <= 25 (50Cl, 53Ar, 55,56K, 57,58Ca, 59,60,61Sc, 62,63Ti, 65,66V, 68Cr,70Mn). A one-bo…
In nuclear thermodynamics, the determination of the excitation energy of hot nuclei is a fundamental experimental problem. Instrumental physicists have been trying to solve this problem for several years by building the most exhaustive 4Pi detector arrays and perfecting their calorimetry techniques. In a recent paper, a proposal for a new calorimetry, called "3D calorimetry", was made. It tries to optimize the separation between the particles and fragments emitted by the Quasi-Projectile and the other possible contributions. This can be achieved by determining the experimental probability for …
The results of measurements of the production of neutron-rich nuclei by the fragmentation of a 48Ca beam at 142 MeV/u are presented. Evidence was found for the production of a new isotope that is the most neutron-rich silicon nuclide, 44Si, in a net neutron pick-up process. A simple systematic framework was found to describe the production cross sections based on thermal evaporation from excited prefragments that allows extrapolation to other weak reaction products.
Simulations based on experimental data obtained from multifragmenting quasifused nuclei produced in central 129Xe + natSn collisions have been used to deduce event by event freeze-out properties on the thermal excitation energy range 4-12 AMeV. From these properties and temperatures deduced from proton transverse momentum fluctuations constrained caloric curves have been built. At constant average volumes caloric curves exhibit a monotonous behaviour whereas for constrained pressures a backbending is observed. Such results support the existence of a first order phase transition for hot nuclei.
By using freeze-out properties of multifragmenting hot nuclei produced in quasifusion central $^{129}$Xe+$^{nat}$Sn collisions at different beam energies (32, 39, 45 and 50 AMeV) which were estimated by means of a simulation based on experimental data collected by the $4π$ INDRA multidetector, heat capacity in the thermal excitation energy range 4 - 12.5 AMeV was calculated from total kinetic energies and multiplicities at freeze-out. The microcanonical formulation was employed. Negative heat capacity which indicates a first order phase transition for finite systems is observed and confirms pr…
The production mechanism of highly excited nuclei in the Fermi energy domain is investigated. A phenomenological approach, based on the exciton model, is used for the description of pre-equilibrium emission. A model of deep inelastic transfer is employed for the peripheral collisions in the post-pre-equilibrium stage. An approach to describe more central collisions is proposed. A geometric overlap formula is employed in a way suitable for given energy domain. A simple geometric approach describing the interaction of participant and spectator zones is used to determine the incomplete fusion cha…
The fusion-by-diffusion model proposed by Swiatecki {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. C71, 014602 (2005)] has provided a simple and convenient tool to estimate evaporation residue cross sections for superheavy nuclei. I extend this model by taking into account deformation of the target nucleus, and discuss the role of orientation of deformed target in hot fusion reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. To this end, I introduce an injection point for the diffusion process over an inner barrier which depends on the orientation angle. I apply this model to the $^{48}$Ca+$^{248}$Cm reaction and sh…

Phys. A809 (2008) 111]. From these properties and the temperatures deduced from proton transverse momentum fluctuations, constrained caloric curves have been built. At constant average volumes caloric curves exhibit a monotonic behaviour whereas for constrained pressures a backbending is observed. Such results support the existence of a…
The pairing correlations in hot nuclei $^{162}$Dy are investigated in terms of the thermodynamical properties by covariant density functional theory. The heat capacities $C_V$ are evaluated in the canonical ensemble theory and the paring correlations are treated by a shell-model-like approach, in which the particle number is conserved exactly. A S-shaped heat capacity curve, which agrees qualitatively with the experimental data, has been obtained and analyzed in details. It is found that the one-pair-broken states play crucial roles in the appearance of the S shape of the heat capacity curve. …
The phonon damping model (PDM) is extended to include the effect of angular momentum at finite temperature. The model is applied to the study of damping of giant dipole resonance (GDR) in hot and noncollectively rotating spherical nuclei. The numerical results obtained for Mo88 and Sn106 show that the GDR width increases with both temperature T and angular momentum M. At T > 4 MeV and M<= 60 hbar the increase in the GDR width slows down for Sn106, whereas at M<= 80 hbar the GDR widths in both nuclei nearly saturate. By adopting the nuclear shear viscosity extracted from fission data at T= 0, i…
The improved Kelson-Garvey (ImKG) mass relations are proposed from the mass differences of mirror nuclei. The masses of 31 measured proton-rich nuclei with $7\leq A\leq41$ and $-5\leq (N-Z)\leq-3$ can be remarkably well reproduced by using the proposed relations, with a root-mean-square deviation of 0.398 MeV, which is much smaller than the results of Kelson-Garvey (0.502 MeV) and Isobar-Mirror mass relations (0.647 MeV). This is because many more masses of participating nuclei are involved in the ImKG mass relations for predicting the masses of unknown proton-rich nuclei. The masses for 144 u…
An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this abnormal production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 AMeV incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. N/Z influence was als…
The density of accessible levels at low spin in the (^3He,αγ) reaction has been extracted for the ^{161,162}Dy and ^{171,172}Yb nuclei. The entropy of the even-odd and even-even nuclei has been deduced as a function of excitation energy, and found to reach a maximum of 15 k_B before neutron evaporation. The entropy of one quasi-particle outside an even-even core is found to be 1.70(15) k_B. This quasi-particle picture of hot nuclei is well accounted for within a simple pairing model. The onset of two, four and six quasi-particle excitations in the ^{162}Dy and ^{172}Yb nuclei is discussed and …
The Green-Kubo relation and fluctuation-dissipation theorem are employed to calculate the shear viscosity $η$ of a finite hot nucleus directly from the width and energy of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) of this nucleus. The ratio $η/s$ of shear viscosity $η$ to entropy density $s$ is extracted from the experimental systematics of the GDR in copper, tin and lead isotopes at finite temperature $T$. These empirical results are then compared with the predictions by several independent models, as well as with almost model-independent estimations. Based on these results, it is concluded that the r…
Based on time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory, a new inverse quasifission mechanism is proposed to produce neutron-rich transfermium nuclei, in collision of prolate deformed actinides. Calculations show that collision of the tip of one nucleus with the side of the other results in a nucleon flux toward the latter. The role of nucleon evaporation and impact parameter, as well as the collision time are discussed.
We review the impact of nuclear forces on matter at neutron-rich extremes. Recent results have shown that neutron-rich nuclei become increasingly sensitive to three-nucleon forces, which are at the forefront of theoretical developments based on effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. This includes the formation of shell structure, the spectroscopy of exotic nuclei, and the location of the neutron dripline. Nuclear forces also constrain the properties of neutron-rich matter, including the neutron skin, the symmetry energy, and the structure of neutron stars. We first review our unde…
The di-neutron correlation is a spatial correlation with which two valence neutrons are located at a similar position inside a nucleus. We discuss possible experimental probes for the di-neutron correlation. This includes the Coulomb breakup and the pair transfer reactions of neutron-rich nuclei, and the direct two-neutron decays of nuclei beyond the neutron drip-line.
A new method is proposed to deduce the neutron radii of neutron-rich nuclei. This method requires measuring the reaction cross sections of both the neutron-rich nucleus and its stable isotope at the same energy on a proton target. Using this method and the available experimental data of $^{12,22}$C + $p$ and $^{9,14}$Be + $p$ at 40$A$ MeV, the neutron radii of $^{22}$C and $^{14}$Be have been deduced for the first time.
In the domain of Fermi energy, it is extremely complex to isolate experimentally fragments and particles issued from the cooling of a hot nucleus produced during a heavy ion collision. This paper presents a new method to characterize more precisely hot Quasi-Projectiles. It tries to take into account as accurately as possible the distortions generated by all the other potential participants in the nuclear reaction. It is quantitatively shown that this method is a major improvement respect to classic calorimetries used with a 4$π$ detector array. By detailing and deconvolving the different step…
From the experimental data on odd-even staggering of masses, we have shown that variation of pairing as a function of neutron number plays an important role in many distinctive features like occurrence of new shell closures, shell erosion, anomalous reduction of the energy of the first 2+ state and slower increase in the B(E2, 2_{+}^{1} \rightarrow 0_{+}^{1}) in the neutron-rich even-even nuclei in different mass regions. New predictions have been made in a model independent way. Results of theoretical calculations support the phenomenological findings.

Above-barrier fusion cross-sections for an isotopic chain of oxygen isotopes with A=16-19 incident on a $^{12}$C target are presented. Experimental data are compared with both static and dynamical microscopic calculations. These calculations are unable to explain the $\sim$37\% increase in the average above-barrier fusion cross-section observed for $^{19}$O as compared to $β$-stable oxygen isotopes. This result suggests that for neutron-rich nuclei existing time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations underpredict the role of dynamics at near-barrier energies. High-quality measurement of above-bar…
Insights into the equation of state of neutron rich matter obtained from the neutron skin thickness of 208Pb are in sharp conflict with earlier measurements of the electric dipole polarizability. We use a set of accurately calibrated energy density functionals to highlight the tension and to articulate how plans for a highly-intense Gamma Factory may alleviate the tension.
Background: Multi-nucleon transfer reactions have recently attracted attention as a possible path to the synthesis of new neutron-rich heavy nuclei. Purpose: We study transfer reactions involving massive nuclei with the intention of understanding if the semi-classical model GRAZING coupled to an evaporation and fission competition model can satisfactory reproduce experimental data on transfer reactions in which fission plays a role. Methods: We have taken the computer code GRAZING and have added fission competition to it (GRAZING-F) using our current understanding of $Γ_n/Γ_f$, fission barrier…
The ratio of pre-equilibrium neutrons to protons from collisions of neutron-rich nuclei is studied as a function of their kinetic energies. This ratio is found to be sensitive to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy, but is independent of the compressibility of symmetric nuclear matter and the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections. The experimental measurement of this ratio thus provides a novel means for determining the nuclear equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter.
Several neutron capture cross sections of light neutron-rich nuclei were measured in the astrophysically relevant energy region of 5 to 200 keV. The experimental data are compared to calculations using the direct capture model. The results are used for the calculation of neutron capture cross sections of unstable isotopes. Furthermore, neutron sources with energies below E_n \approx 10 keV are discussed.
Effects of the momentum-dependence of the symmetry potential in nuclear reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at RIA energies are studied using an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model. It is found that symmetry potentials with and without the momentum-dependence but corresponding to the same density-dependent symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ lead to significantly different predictions on several $E_{sym}(ρ)$-sensitive experimental observables. The momentum-dependence of the symmetry potential is thus critically important for investigating accurately the equation of state (${\rm EOS}$…
Ground-state moments of inertia (MoI) are investigated for about 1700 even-even nuclei from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line up to $Z=120$ and $N=184$. The cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equation is solved in the coordinate space. This model describes well the available experimental data of more than 300 nuclides possessing an appreciable deformation. I find that the MoI greatly increase near the drip line whereas the deformation is not as strong as estimated by the empirical relation. Systematic measurements of the excitation energy and the transition probability to the f…
We employ a variational method, in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi approximation, to study the effect of the symmetry energy on the neutron skin thickness and the symmetry energy coefficients of various neutron rich nuclei. We concentrate our interest on $^{208}$Pb, $^{124}$Sn, $^{90}$Zr, and $^{48}$Ca, although the method can be applied in the totality of medium and heavy neutron rich nuclei. Our approach has the advantage that the isospin asymmetry function $α(r)$, which is the key quantity to calculate isovector properties of various nuclei, is directly related with the symmetry energy as…
Within the framework of the Glauber diffraction theory, the differential cross sections of the elastic p6He, p8Li, and p9Li scattering were calculated at intermediate energies from 70 to 1000 MeV/nucleon. The use of realistic three-body wave functions alpha-n-n (6He), alpha-t-n (8Li) and alpha-t-2n (9Li), obtained in the framework of modern clear models, and the expansion of the Glauber operator into a series of multiple scatterings in a form that is well adapted to the three-body nuclei configuration, allows the calculation of the matrix elements, by taking into account the rescattering from …
The single particle and bulk properties of the neutron-rich nuclei constrain fundamental issues in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics like the limits of existence of quantum many body systems (atomic nuclei), the equation of state of neutron-rich matter, neutron star, nucleosynthesis, evolution of stars, neutron star merging etc.. The state of the art of Coulomb breakup of the neutron-rich nuclei has been used to explore those properties. Unambiguous information on detailed components of the ground-state wave-function along with quantum numbers of the valence neutron of the nuclei have b…
The dependence of fusion dynamics on neutron excess for light nuclei is extracted. This is accomplished by comparing the average fusion cross-section at energies just above the fusion barrier for $^{12-15}$C + $^{12}$C with measurements of the interaction cross-section from high evergy collisions. The experimental results indicate that the fusion cross-section associated with dynamics increases with increasing neutron excess. Calculations with a time-dependent Hartree-Fock model fail to describe the observed trend.

We present a theoretical study of the Maris polarization effect and its application in quasi-free reactions to assess information on the structure of exotic nuclei. We discuss the uncertainties in the calculations of triple differential cross sections and of analyzing powers due the choices of various nucleon-nucleon interactions the optical potentials and limitations of the method. Our calculations explore a large number of choices for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions and the optical potential for nucleon-nucleus scattering. Our study implies that polarization variables in (p,2p) reactio…
