We report precision measurements of the Feynman-x dependence, and first measurements of the transverse momentum dependence, of transverse single spin asymmetries for the production of π^0 mesons from polarized proton collisions at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV. The x_F dependence of the results is in fair agreement with perturbative QCD model calculations that identify orbital motion of quarks and gluons within the proton as the origin of the spin effects. Results for the p_T dependence at fixed x_F are not consistent with pQCD-based calculations.
With proton-proton collisions at PHENIX a variety of direct channels are used to probe the proton substructure. Of the many channels available at PHENIX, charged pion measurements are expected to have sensitivity of Delta g and thus help in the global analysis that will constrain it. We present a measurement of mid-rapidity charged pion production double longitudinal spin asymmetries (ALL) at the pT range of 5-10 GeV/c at collision energies of sqrt(s) = 200 GeV.
We present measurements of Collins asymmetries in the inclusive process e+e- -->pi pi X, where pi stands for charged pions, at a center-of-mass energy of 10.6 GeV. We use a data sample of 468 fb-1 collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II B factory at SLAC, and consider pairs of charged pions produced in opposite hemispheres of hadronic events. We observe clear asymmetries in the distributions of the azimuthal angles in two distinct reference frames. We study the dependence of the asymmetry on several kinematic variables, finding that it increases with increasing pion momentum and moment…
Transverse single spin asymmetries of particles produced in $p+p^{\uparrow}$ collisions provide insight on the partonic spin and momentum structure of hadrons; heavy flavor electrons provide access to initial state spin-momentum correlations of gluons in the proton, while charged pions provide access to initial and final state transverse spin effects. Charged particles are measured at midrapidity at PHENIX using the silicon vertex detector and central arm spectrometer, made of an electromagnetic calorimeter, a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector, and drift and pad chambers. Recent results for both…
We present a preliminary measurement of the Collins asymmetries in the inclusive process e^+e^- --> qqbar --> pi pi X at center-of-mass energy near 10.6 GeV. We use a data sample of 468 fb^(-1) collected by the BABAR experiment, and we consider pairs of charged pions produced in opposite jets in hadronic events. We confirm a non-zero Collins effect as observed by previous experiments, and we study the Collins asymmetry as a function of pion fractional energies and transverse momenta, and as a function of the polar angle of the analysis axis.
For the first time single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive pion production are measured by the HERMES experiment with a transversely polarised hydrogen target. Two different sine-modulations are extracted which can be related to the transversity δq(x) and Sivers f_{1T}^{\perp q}(x) quark distribution functions. The extracted sine-moments still contain small sub-leading twist contributions which can be extracted from HERMES data combining the results from the transversely polarised hydrogen target with previously measured results from a longitudinally polarised hydrogen target.
We present the measurement of Single Beam-Spin Azimuthal Asymmetries in pion electroproduction off hydrogen in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). The measurement was made using the HERMES spectrometer with an internal gas target and the polarized 27.6 GeV electron(positron) beam of HERA using the data taken during the years 1996-2000. The $\sinϕ$ modulation of the azimuthal asymmetry was measured for semi-inclusive $π^+,π^-$ and $π^0$. The dependence of the asymmetry on the Bjorken $x$, pion relative ($z$) and transverse ($P_T$) momentum is presented. Results are compared to the…
We present a preliminary study from Fermilab experiment E791 of Lambda^0 / Lambda^0 bar, Xi^- / Xi^+ and Omega^- /Omega^+ production asymmetries from pi^- nucleus interactions at 500 Gev/c. The production asymmetries for these particles are studied as a function of x_F and pt^2. We observed an asymmetry in the target fragmentation region for Lambda^0's larger than that for Xi's, suggesting diquark effects. The asymmetry for Omega's is significatively smaller than for the other two hyperons consistent with the fact that Omega's do not share valence quarks with either the pion or the target part…
A complete, fundamental understanding of the proton must include knowledge of the underlying spin structure. The transversity distribution, $h_1\left(x\right)$, which describes the transverse spin structure of quarks inside of a transversely polarized proton, is only accessible through channels that couple $h_1 \left(x\right)$ to another chiral odd distribution, such as the Collins fragmentation function ($Δ^N D_{π/q^\uparrow}\left(z,j_T\right)$). Significant Collins asymmetries of charged pions have been observed in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data. These SIDIS asymmetrie…
A measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of pions produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off protons is presented. The measurement was performed using the {HERMES} spectrometer with a hydrogen gas target and the longitudinally polarized 27.6 GeV positron beam of HERA. The sinusoidal amplitude of the dependence of the asymmetry on the angle $ϕ$ of the hadron production plane around the virtual photon direction relative to the lepton scattering plane was measured for $π^+,π^-$ and $π^0$ mesons. The dependence of this amplitude on the Bjorken scaling va…
A single-spin asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of neutral pions relative to the lepton scattering plane has been measured for the first time in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons off longitudinally polarized protons. The analysing power in the sin(phi) moment of the cross section is 0.019 +/- 0.007(stat.) +/- 0.003(syst.). This result is compared to single-spin asymmetries for charged pion production measured in the same kinematic range. The pi^0 asymmetry is of the same size as the pi^+ asymmetry and shows a similar dependence on the relevant kinematic variables. The asymmetry is d…
Single-spin asymmetries have been measured for semi-inclusive electroproduction of $π^+$, $π^-$, $π^0$ and $K^+$ mesons in deep-inelastic scattering off a longitudinally polarised deuterium target. The asymmetries appear in the distribution of the hadrons in the azimuthal angle $ϕ$ around the virtual photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The corresponding analysing powers in the $\sin ϕ$ moment of the cross section are $0.012 \pm 0.002 {(stat.)} \pm 0.002 {(syst.)}$ for $π^+$, $0.006 \pm 0.003 {(stat.)} \pm 0.002 {(syst.)}$ for $π^-$, $0.021 \pm 0.005 {(stat.)} \pm 0.003 {…
A set of measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in the production of pairs of identified hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised $^6$LiD (deuteron) and NH$_3$ (proton) targets is presented. All available data collected in the years 2002-2004 and 2007/2010 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/$c$ at the CERN SPS were analysed. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity distribution functions via a fragmentation function that in principle may be independently obtained from $e^+e^-$ annihilation data. Results are presented, discussed an…
Inclusive Lambda, Antilambda and K0s production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb^-1. Differential cross sections, baryon to antibaryon asymmetry and baryon to meson production have been measured in the laboratory system for Q2 > 25 GeV^2.
The transverse single-spin asymmetries of neutral pions and non-identified charged hadrons have been measured at mid-rapidity in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The data cover a transverse momentum (p_T) range 0.5-5.0 GeV/c for charged hadrons and 1.0-5.0 GeV/c for neutral pions, at a Feynman-x (x_F) value of approximately zero. The asymmetries seen in this previously unexplored kinematic region are consistent with zero within statistical errors of a few percent. In addition, the inclusive charged hadron cross section at mid-rapidity from 0.5 < p_T < 7.0 GeV/c is prese…
Recently, the RHICf Collaboration measured the transverse single-spin asymmetries of the very forward neutral pion in polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV, produced at large pseudorapidity ($η\gtrsim 6$). The data show large asymmetries both in longitudinal momentum fraction $x_F$ and transverse momentum $p_T$ at $p_T<1\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$. Employing baryonic triple Regge exchanges, we describe the complete RHICf data for the first time and show that the neutral pion production at low $p_T$ can be interpreted as a diffractive one.
Single target-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive two-pion production were measured for the first time by the HERMES experiment, using a longitudinally polarized deuterium target. These asymmetries relate to the unknown transversity distribution function $h_1(x)$ through, also unknown, interference fragmentation functions. The presented results are compared with a model for the dependence of one of these interference fragmentation functions on the invariant mass of the pion pair.
A primary goal of the STAR Spin program at RHIC is the measurement of the polarized gluon distribution function $ΔG$, which can be obtained from a global analysis incorporating measurements of the double spin asymmetry A_{LL} in various final state channels of polarized p+p collisions. Final states with large production cross sections such as inclusive jet and hadron production are analyzed as the program moves towards the measurement of A_{LL} in the theoretically clean channel of prompt photon production. The channels p+p -> pi^{+/-} + X are unique in that the ordering of the measurements of…
We study the single-spin asymmetries of pions produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on the longitudinally polarized nucleon targets. We particularly consider the effects of the twist-3 transverse-momentum dependent distribution functions $f_L^\perp$ and $h_L$ to the asymmetry. We calculate the asymmetric moment $A_{UL}^{\sinϕ_h}$ for $π^+$, $π^-$ and $π^0$ produced off the proton target at HERMES and compare the results with the HERMES data. We also present the prediction of the same asymmetries for different pions at the kinematics of CLAS 5.5 GeV on a proton target, as well as…
We present a study on the beam single spin asymmetries $A_{LU}^{\sinϕ_h}$ of $π^+$, $π^-$ and $π^0$ production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process, by considering Collins effect and the $g^\perp D_1$ term simultaneously. We calculate the twist-3 distributions $e(x, \bm k_T^2)$ and $g^\perp(x,\bm k_T^2)$ for the valence quarks inside the proton in a spectator model. We consider two different options for the form of diquark propagator, as well as two different choices for the model parameters in the calculation. Using the model results, we estimate the beam spin asymmetries $A_{L…
We present measurements of the branching fractions and a search for CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into two-body final states of kaons and pions. The results are based on a data sample of approximately 23 million BB(bar) pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. We find the following branching fractions: BF(B0-->pi+pi-)= (4.1+/-1.0+/-0.7) x 10^{-6}, BF(B0-->K+pi-)=(16.7+/-1.6+/-1.3) x 10^{-6}, BF(B+-->K+pi0)=(10.8^{+2.1}_{-1.9}+/-1.0) x 10^{-6}, BF(B+-->K0pi+)=(18.2^{+3.3}_{-3.0}+/-2.0) x 10^{-6}, BF(B0-->K0pi0)=…
Results are presented for the transverse single-spin asymmetries of direct photons, neutral pions, and eta mesons for $|η|<0.35$ from $p^\uparrow + p$ collisions with $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV at PHENIX. As hadrons, $π^0$ and $η$ mesons are sensitive to both initial- and final-state effects and at midrapidity probe the dynamics of gluons along with a mix of quark flavors. Because direct photon production does not include hadronization, the direct photon TSSA is only sensitive to initial-state effects and at midrapidity provides a clean probe of the gluon dynamics in transversely polarized protons. …
Longitudinally polarized $p+p$ scattering experiments provide access to gluon polarization via measurement of the double helicity asymmetry, $A_{LL}$. At the completion of the 2013 RHIC running period, a significant dataset of $π^{0}$s corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 46 $\text{pb}^{-1}$ (2012) and 8 $\text{pb}^{-1}$ (2013) produced from polarized $p+p$ scattering at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV with an average beam polarization of approximately $50\%$ was acquired. The $π^{0}$ kinematics were measured via isolation cones by the STAR Forward Meson Spectrometer, an electromagnetic calorimeter…
The distribution of the azimuthal angle of charged and neutral hadrons relative to the lepton plane has been studied for neutral current deep inelastic $ep$ scattering using an integrated luminosity of 45 pb-1 taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The measurements were made in the hadronic centre-of-mass system. The analysis exploits the energy-flow method, which allows the measurement to be made over a larger range of pseudorapidity compared to previous results. The dependence of the moments of the azimuthal distributions on the pseudorapidity and minimum transverse energy of the final-state …
Beam-helicity asymmetries for the two-pion-photoproduction reaction gamma + p --> p pi+ pi- have been studied for the first time in the resonance region for center-of-mass energies between 1.35 GeV and 2.30 GeV. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer using circularly polarized tagged photons incident on an unpolarized hydrogen target. Beam-helicity-dependent angular distributions of the final-state particles were measured. The large cross-section asymmetries exhibit strong sensitivity to the kinematics and dynamics of the reaction. The data a…
We evaluate the single target-spin sin(phi_h) and sin(2ϕ_h) azimuthal asymmetries in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off longitudinally polarized proton target under HERMES kinematic conditions. A good agreement with the HERMES data can be achieved using only the twist-2 distribution and fragmentation functions.
The SciBooNE Collaboration has measured neutral current neutral pion production by the muon neutrino beam at a polystyrene target (C8H8). We obtained (7.7+- 0.5(stat.)+0.4-0.5 (sys.)) x 10^-2 as cross section ratio of the neutral current neutral pion production to total charged current cross section at the mean neutrino energy of 1.16 GeV. This result is consistent with the Monte Carlo prediction based on the Rein-Sehgal model
We report the first evidence for a non-zero beam-spin azimuthal asymmetry in the electroproduction of positive pions in the deep-inelastic region. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 4.3 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The amplitude of the $\sinϕ$ modulation increases with the momentum of the pion relative to the virtual photon, $z$, with an average amplitude of $0.038 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.003$ for $0.5 < z < 0.8$ range.
CP asymmetries have been measured recently by the LHCb collaboration in three-body $B^+$ decays to final states involving charged pions and kaons. Large asymmetries with opposite signs at a level of about 60% have been observed in $B^\pm\to π^\pm({\rm or} K^\pm)π^+π^-$ and $B^\pm \to π^\pm K^+K^-$ for restricted regions in the Dalitz plots involving $π^+π^-$ and $K^+K^-$ with low invariant mass. U-spin is shown to predict corresponding $ΔS=0$ and $ΔS=1$ asymmetries with opposite signs and inversely proportional to their branching ratios, in analogy with a successful relation predicted thirteen…
Using the Belle detector operating at the KEKB e+e- storage ring, we have measured the mean multiplicity and the momentum spectrum of neutral pions from the decays of the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We measure a mean of 4.70 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.22 neutral pions per Upsilon(4S) decay.
We study the single-spin asymmetries with the $\sinϕ_S$ and $\sin(2ϕ_h -ϕ_S)$ angular dependences for charged and neutral pions produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering on the transversely polarized proton target. The theoretical interpretations of the two asymmetries are presented in terms of the convolution of the twist-3 quark transverse momentum dependent distributions and twist-2 fragmentation functions. Specifically, we investigate the role of the distributions $f_T$, $h_T$ and $h_T^\perp$ in the $\sinϕ_S$ asymmetry, as well as the role of the distributions $f_T^\perp$, $h_T$…
We perform a calculation of Sivers function in a light-cone SU(6) quark-diquark model with both scalar diquark and vector diquark spectators. We derive the transverse momentum dependent light-cone wave function of the proton by taking into account the Melosh-Wigner rotation. By adopting one-gluon exchange, we obtain a non-vanishing Sivers function of $down$ quark from interference of proton spin amplitudes. We analyze the $\frac{|P_{h\perp}|}{M}$ weighted Sivers asymmetries in $π^+$, $π^-$ and $π^0$ electroproduction off transverse polarized proton target, averaged and not averaged by the kine…
Bose-Einstein correlations of both neutral and like-sign charged pion pairs are measured in a sample of 2 million hadronic Z decays collected with the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is performed in the four-momentum difference range 300 MeV < Q < 2 GeV. The radius of the neutral pion source is found to be smaller than that of charged pions. This result is in qualitative agreement with the string fragmentation model.
We present measurements of the branching fraction and CP-violating asymmetries for neutral B decays to D*+-D-+. The measurement uses a data sample of approximately 88 million Y(4S) --> B Bbar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory. We measure the branching fraction to be (8.8 +- 1.0 +- 1.3) x 10^-4 and the time-integrated CP-violating asymmetry between the rates to D*+D- and D*-D+ to be A = -0.03 +- 0.11 +- 0.05. We also measure the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry parameters to be S-+ = -0.24 +- 0.69 +- 0.12, C-+ = -0.22 +- 0.37 +- 0.10 fo…
SciBooNE, located in the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab, collected data from June 2007 to August 2008 to accurately measure muon neutrino and anti-neutrino cross sections on carbon below 1 GeV neutrino energy. SciBooNE is studying charged current interactions. Among them, neutral pion production interactions will be the focus of this poster. The experimental signature of neutrino-induced neutral pion production is constituted by two electromagnetic cascades initiated by the conversion of the neutral pion decay photons, with an additional muon in the final state for CC processes. In this pos…
We study the impact of future measurements of lepton-charge and forward-backward asymmetries on PDF determination. These results have been obtained employing standard profiling procedures and the open-source platform xFitter. The potential of the combination of charged-current and neutral-current Drell-Yan asymmetries in regions of transverse and invariant masses near the W/Z bosons peaks to improve the PDF uncertainties has also been explored.
Neutral pion number fluctuations have been measured in proton interactions at U-70 accelerator (IHEP, Protvino). The experiment is carried out on the SVD-2 setup. Charged and neutral particles are registered simultaneously. The reconstruction of $π^0$-mesons is fulfilled by means of observed gamma quanta at the electromagnetic calorimeter. The corrections on the setup acceptance, triggering, efficiencies of detectors and the reconstruction algorithm are included. The multiplicity distributions of the neutral pions have permitted to define the scaled variance, $ω$, for $π^0$-mesons. The reveale…
We present a preliminary measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetries in decays of neutral B mesons to the final states D*pi using approximately 82 million BBbar events collected by the BaBar experiment at the PEPII storage ring. Events containing these decays are selected with a partial reconstruction technique, in which only the high momentum pion and the low momentum pion from the D* decay are reconstructed. The flavor of the other B meson in the event is tagged using the information from kaon and lepton candidates. We measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry A = -0.063 +/- 0.024 (stat.)…
With the OPAL detector at LEP we measured at energies around the Z0 peak the Bose-Einstein Correlations (BECs) of neutral pion pairs. We compare the results of this measurement with former results obtained at LEP for hadrons including those obtained from Fermi-Dirac Correlations (FDCs).
Azimuthal spin asymmetries, both for charged and neutral pion production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of unpolarized charged lepton beams on longitudinally and transversely polarized nucleon targets, are analyzed and calculated. Various assumptions and approximations in the quark distributions and fragmentation functions often used in these calculations are studied in detail. It is found that different approaches to the distribution and fragmentation functions may lead to quite different predictions on the azimuthal asymmetries measured in the HERMES experiments, thus their effe…
We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23 million Upsilon(4S)-->B-anti-B decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events where one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay…
Single-spin asymmetries for semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons are measured for the first time with transverse target polarization. The asymmetry depends on the azimuthal angles of both the pion ($ϕ$) and the target spin axis ($ϕ_S$) about the virtual photon direction and relative to the lepton scattering plane. The extracted Fourier component $\cmpi$ is a signal of the previously unmeasured quark transversity distribution, in conjunction with the so-called Collins fragmentation function, also unknown. The Fourier component $\smpi$ of th…
A Fourier analysis of double-spin azimuthal asymmetries measured at HERMES in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized leptons off tranversely polarized protons is presented for pions and charged kaons. The extracted amplitudes can be interpreted as convolutions of transverse momentum-dependent distribution and fragmentation functions and provide sensitivity to, e.g., the poorly known worm-gear quark distribution.
The work presents the studies of the polarization observables in the single pion production (SPP) induced by the interaction of the muon neutrino (antineutrino) with nucleons. The SPP cross-sections and spin asymmetries are computed within two phenomenological models. One is basing on the nonlinear sigma model \cite{Hernandez:2007qq}; the other has origin in linear sigma model~\cite{Fogli:1979cz}. Firstly, we show that the final nucleon polarization and target spin asymmetries are good observables to obtain information about the $C_5^A$ axial form factor. Secondly, we demonstrate that the nucl…
Azimuthal single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in semi-inclusive electroproduction of charged pions and kaons in deep-inelastic scattering of positrons on a transversely polarised hydrogen target were observed. SSA amplitudes for both the Collins and the Sivers mechanism are presented.
The NA62 experiment at CERN collected a large sample of charged kaon decays with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons in 2007. The kaon beam represents a source of tagged neutral pion decays in vacuum. A measurement of the electromagnetic transition form factor slope of the neutral pion in the time-like region from $1.05\times10^6$ fully reconstructed $π^0$ Dalitz decay is presented. The limits on dark photon production in $π^0$ decays from the earlier kaon experiment at CERN, NA48/2, are also reported.
We find a new $CP$-violation effect in charm decays into neutral kaons, which results from the interference between two tree (Cabibbo-favored and doubly Cabibbo-suppressed) amplitudes with the mixing of final-state mesons. This effect, estimated to be of an order of $10^{-3}$, is much larger than the direct $CP$ asymmetries in these decays, but missed in the literature. It can be revealed by measuring the difference of the time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in the $D^{+}\toπ^{+}K_S^0$ and $D_{s}^{+}\to K^{+} K_S^0$ modes, which are accessible at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. If confirmed, th…
Single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering from transversely and longitudinally polarized proton targets are combined to evaluate the subleading-twist contribution to the longitudinal case. This contribution is significantly positive for (π^+) mesons and dominates the asymmetries on a longitudinally polarized target previously measured by \hermes. The subleading-twist contribution for (π^-) mesons is found to be small.
We report results on time-dependent CP asymmetries in $B \to D^{*\mp}π^{\pm}$ decays based on a data sample containing 657 {\times} $10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We use a partial reconstruction technique, wherein signal $B \to D^{*\mp}π^{\pm}$ events are identified using information only from the fast pion from the B decay and the slow pion from the subsequent decay of the $D^{*\mp}$, where the former (latter) corresponds to $D^{*+} (D^{*-})$ final states. We obtain CP violation parameters $S…
The possibilities to measure lepton forward--backward asymmetries at the LHC in the reaction pp(qqbar) --> l+l- are studied for dilepton events with masses above 400 GeV. It is shown that such measurements allow accurate tests of the neutral current interference structure up to about 2 TeV center of mass energies. The sensitivity of asymmetries at the LHC to new physics is demonstrated within the context of quark compositeness and exotic Z' scenarios.
We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of 29.7 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and 3.9 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons, which are produced in pairs at the $Υ(4S)$, is fully reconstructed in the CP decay modes $J/ψK^0_S$, $ψ(2S) K^0_S$, $χ_{c1} K^0_S$, $J/ψK^{*0}$ ($K^{*0}\to K^0_Sπ^0$) and $J/ψK^0_L$, or in flavor-eigenstate modes involving $D^{(*)}π/ρ/a…
The atmospheric neutrino background for proton decay to positron and neutral pion in ring imaging water Cherenkov detectors is studied with an artificial accelerator neutrino beam for the first time. In total, about 314,000 neutrino events corresponding to about 10 megaton-years of atmospheric neutrino interactions were collected by a 1,000 ton water Cherenkov detector (KT). The KT charged-current single neutral pion production data are well reproduced by simulation programs of neutrino and secondary hadronic interactions used in the Super-Kamiokande (SK) proton decay search. The obtained prot…
We have measured the moment $A_{LU}^{\sinϕ}$ corresponding to the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in SIDIS. $A_{LU}^{\sinϕ}$ is a twist-3 quantity providing information about quark-gluon correlations. Data were taken with the CLAS Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab using a 5.498 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target. All three pion channels ($π^+$, $π^0$ and $π^-$) were measured simultaneously over a large range of kinematics within the virtuality range $Q^2 \approx$ 1.0-4.5 GeV$^2$. The observable was measured with better than 1% statistical pr…
The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has measured the single-spin transverse asymmetry ($A_{N}$) for neutral pion and non-identified charged hadron production at $x_{F}\sim 0$ over a transverse momentum range of $\sim$ 0.5 to 5.0 GeV/c from polarized proton-proton interactions at a center of mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) of 200 GeV. The asymmetries observed are consistent with zero.
The SciBooNE Collaboration reports inclusive neutral current neutral pion production by a muon neutrino beam on a polystyrene target (C8H8). We obtain (7.7 \pm 0.5(stat.) \pm 0.5 (sys.)) x 10^(-2) as the ratio of the neutral current neutral pion production to total charged current cross section; the mean energy of neutrinos producing detected neutral pions is 1.1 GeV. The result agrees with the Rein-Sehgal model implemented in our neutrino interaction simulation program with nuclear effects. The spectrum shape of the neutral pion momentum and angle agree with the model. We also measure the rat…
The ALICE collaboration at the LHC has measured the transverse momentum spectra of neutral pions via their two photon decay in pp and Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV over a broad transverse momentum range with different subsystems: with the electromagnetic calorimeters PHOS and EMCAL and with photon conversions in the inner material of the detectors using $e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs reconstructed with the Central Tracking System. In this report, neutral pions production is compared between pp and Pb$-$Pb collisions measured with conversion photons in terms of the nuclear modification fac…
We consider single-inclusive forward pion production in high-energy proton-proton collisions at RHIC energies. A good baseline description of the transverse momentum distributions at high rapidity is obtained within Mueller's dipole formalism with an anomalous dimension incorporating an ``extended geometric scaling'' window between the saturation and DGLAP regimes. We then formulate pion production for transversely polarized projectiles within the same approach. We assume that an azimuthal, spin-dependent asymmetry arises from the so-called Sivers effect and investigate the single transverse-s…
Many extensions of the standard model predict the existence of extra neutral vector bosons, generically referred as $Z^\prime$. This boson may be discovered at the LHC but in this case it will be necessary to study the respective parameters in order to discriminate to which model it belongs to. This is a task for a much clean lepton linear collider as the future ILC. In this paper we develop an exemplary study of the capability of several asymmetries on and off $Z^\prime$ peak in discriminating among those extensions with (almost) no ambiguities.
Measurements of the production of forward high-energy pi0 mesons from transversely polarized proton collisions at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV are reported. The cross section is generally consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The analyzing power is small at x_F below about 0.3, and becomes positive and large at higher x_F, similar to the trend in data at \sqrt{s}<=20 GeV. The analyzing power is in qualitative agreement with perturbative QCD model expectations. This is the first significant spin result seen for particles produced with p_T>1 GeV/c at a polarized proton collide…
Transverse single-spin asymmetries of very forward neutral pions generated in polarized $p + p$ collisions allow us to understand the production mechanism in terms of perturbative and non-perturbative strong interactions. During 2017 the RHICf Collaboration installed an electromagnetic calorimeter in the zero-degree region of the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and measured neutral pions produced at pseudorapidity larger than 6 in polarized $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 510 GeV. The large non-zero asymmetries increasing both in longitudinal momentum fraction $x…
U-spin symmetry predicts equal CP rate asymmetries with opposite signs in pairs of $ΔS=0$ and $ΔS=1$ $B$ meson decays in which initial and final states are related by U-spin reflection. Of particular interest are six decay modes to final states with pairs of charged pions or kaons, including $B_s \to π^+K^-$ and $B_s\to K^+K^-$ for which asymmetries have been reported recently by the LHCb collaboration. After reviewing the current status of these predictions, highlighted by the precision of a relation between asymmetries in $B_s \to π^+K^-$ and $B^0\to K^+π^-$, we perform a perturbative study …
