Context: The distance to the Galactic Centre (GC) is of importance for the distance scale in the Universe. The value derived by Eisenhauer et al. (2005) of 7.62 +- 0.32 kpc based on the orbit of one star around the central black hole is shorter than most other distance estimates based on a variety of different methods. Aim: To establish an independent distance to the GC with high accuracy. To this end Population-II Cepheids are used that have been discovered in the OGLE-II and III surveys. Method: Thirty-nine Pop-II Cepheids have been monitored on 4 nights spanning 14 days. Light curves have been fitted using the known periods from the OGLE data to determine the mean K-band magnitude. It so happens that 37 RR Lyrae stars are in the field-of-views and mean K-band magnitudes are derived for this sample as well. Results: The period-luminosity relation of Pop-II Cepheids in the K-band is determined, and the derived slope of -2.24 +- 0.14 is consistent with the value derived by Matsunaga et al. (2006). Fixing the slope to their more accurate value results in a zero point, and implies a distance modulus to the GC of 14.51 +- 0.12, with an additional systematic uncertainty of 0.07 mag. Similarly, from the RR Lyrae K-band PL-relation we derive a value of 14.48 +- 0.17 (random) +- 0.07 (syst.). The two independent determinations are averaged to find 14.50 +- 0.10 (random) +- 0.07 (syst.), or 7.94 +- 0.37 +- 0.26 kpc.
We present new results on RR Lyrae stars and anomalous Cepheids in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We have increased the number of double-mode RR Lyrae stars and found three new anomalous Cepheids. With period-magnitude and period-amplitude diagrams, we discuss the Oosterhoff classification of Draco. Contradictory results were found in that Draco appears to contain both Oosterhoff I and II type RR Lyrae populations.
A number of recent technical developments, including the Hipparcos satellite, the Hubble Space Telescope fine guidance sensors and long base line near-IR interferometry has made it possible to employ several largely geometrical methods to determine direct distances to RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids. The distance scale now rests on a much firmer basis and the significant differences between the distances based on RR Lyrae stars (short) and Cepheids (long) to the LMC have been largely eliminated. The effects of metalicity on the RR Lyrae period-luminosity (PL) relation in the K-band as well as on t…
By using the same algorithm in the Baade-Wesselink analyses of Galactic RR Lyrae and Cepheid variables, it is shown that, within 0.03 mag (1 sigma) statistical error, they yield the same distance modulus for the Large Magellanic Cloud. By fixing the zero point of the color-temperature calibration to those of the current infrared flux methods and using updated period-luminosity-color relations, we get an average value of 18.55 for the true distance modulus of the LMC.
Infrared and optical absolute magnitudes are derived for the type II Cepheids kappa Pav and VY Pyx from revised Hipparcos parallaxes and for kappa Pav, V553 Cen and SW Tau from pulsation parallaxes. Phase-corrected JHK mags are given for 142 RR Lyrae variables based on 2MASS data. RR Lyrae itself is overluminous compared with LMC RR Lyraes at the classical Cepheid modulus (18.39) consistent with a prediction of Catalan and Cortes. V553 Cen and SW Tau deviate by only 0.02 mag in the mean from the Matsunaga PL(K) relation for globular cluster type II Cepheids with a zero-point based on the same …
The LM method, designed to exploit the Hipparcos data to obtain luminosity calibrations, is applied to derive luminosity calibrations for RR Lyrae and classical Cepheids. From these calibrations the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is estimated. The distance moduli provided by the two calibrations are in good agreement, giving a value of 18.3m, while several previous calibrations using Hipparcos data provided inconsistent results between both types of stars. This result suggests that the Hubble constant should have a value of H_0 = 79 km s-1 Mpc-1.
We present the results of a search for short-period variable stars in Leo A. We have found 92 candidate variables, including eight candidate RR Lyrae stars. From the RR Lyraes, we measure a distance modulus of (m-M)_0 = 24.51 +/- 0.12, or 0.80 +/- 0.04 Mpc. This discovery of RR Lyraes confirms, for the first time, the presence of an ancient (> ~11 Gyr) population in Leo A accounting for at least 0.1% of the galaxy's V luminosity. We have also discovered a halo of old (> ~2 Gyr) stars surrounding Leo A, with a scale length roughly 50% larger than that of the dominant young population. We also r…
The extragalactic distance scale relies heavily on Cepheids. However, it has become clear from observations and pulsation models that the slope and zero point of their P-L relations differ from galaxy to galaxy. This makes the determination of Cepheid distances complex and calls for an independent test of their differences. The test is provided by RR Lyrae star distances of 24 galaxies which calibrate the tip of the red-giant branch (TRGB; M_I = -4.05), which in turn confirms the adopted Cepheids distances on our 2006 distance scale in 18 cases to within 0.1 mag on average. Relative SN Ia and …
We present the results of a search for variable stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Phoenix. Nineteen Cepheids, six candidate long-period variables, one candidate eclipsing binary and a large number of candidate RR Lyrae stars have been identified. Periods and light curves have been obtained for all the Cepheid variables. Their distribution in the period-luminosity diagram reveals that both Anomalous Cepheids (AC) and short-period Classical Cepheids s-pCC are found in our sample. This is the first time that both types of variable star are identified in the same system even though they likely…
We present recent results concerning distance determinations based on the two most popular primary distance indicators, namely classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae. We discuss the problems affecting the Cepheid distance scale, and in particular the dependence of fundamental Period-Luminosity (PL) and Period-Luminosity-Color (PLC) relations on the metal content. The key advantages in using the K-band PL relation of RR Lyrae stars when compared with the M_V vs [Fe/H] are also presented.
The numerical hydrodynamic modelling of beat Cepheid behavior has been a long standing quest in which purely radiative models had failed consistently. We find that beat pulsations occur naturally when {\it turbulent convection} is accounted for in our hydrodynamics code. The development of a relaxation code and of a Floquet stability analysis greatly facilitates the search for and the analysis of beat Cepheid models. The conditions for the occurrence of beat behavior can be understood easily and at a fundamental level with the help of amplitude equations.
Strange modes can occur in radiative classical Cepheids and RR Lyrae models. These are vibrational modes that are trapped near the surface as a result of a 'potential barrier' caused by the sharp hydrogen partial ionization region. Typically the modal number of the strange mode falls between the 7th and 12th overtone, depending on the astrophysical parameters of the equilibrium stellar models (L, M, \Teff, X, Z). Interestingly these modes can be linearly unstable outside the usual instability strip, in which case they should be observable as new kinds of variable stars, 'strange Cepheids' or '…
I review statistical parallax absolute magnitude determinations which employ data from the HIPPARCOS satellite for RR Lyrae and Cepheid variables, and for several other stellar classes. Five groups have studied the RR Lyrae stars, and the results are reassuringly consistent: M_V(RR) = 0.77 +- 0.13 mag at [Fe/H] = -1.6 dex. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations showed that systematic errors are small (~0.03 mag or less), and corrections for them were applied in the above result. The RR Lyrae result is thus very secure. A statistical parallax study of Cepheids found the Period--Luminosity zero-point…
Metallicities ([Fe/H]) from low resolution spectroscopy obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) are presented for 98 RR Lyrae and 3 short period Cepheids in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our metal abundances have typical errors of +/-0.17 dex. The average metallicity of the RR Lyrae stars is [Fe/H]=-1.48 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.06 on the scale of Harris (1996). The star-to-star scatter (0.29 dex) is larger than the observational errors, indicating a real spread in metal abundances. The derived metallicities cover the range -2.12 < [Fe/H] <-0.27, but there are only a few stars having [Fe/H…
Based on a search of the literature up to May 2001, the number of known variable stars in Galactic globular clusters is approximately 3000. Of these, more than 2200 have known periods and the majority (approximately 1800) are of the RR Lyrae type. In addition to the RR Lyrae population, there are approximately 100 eclipsing binaries, 120 SX Phe variables, 60 Cepheids (including population II Cepheids, anomalous Cepheids and RV Tauri) and 120 SR/red variables. The mean period of the fundamental mode RR Lyrae variables is 0.585, for the overtone variables it is 0.342 (0.349 for the first-overton…
We present a CCD survey of variable stars in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. This survey, which has the largest areal coverage since the original variable star survey by Baade & Swope, includes photometry for 270 RR Lyrae stars, 9 anomalous Cepheids, 2 eclipsing binaries, and 12 slow, irregular red variables, as well as 30 background QSOs. Twenty-six probable double-mode RR Lyrae stars were identified. Observed parameters, including mean V and I magnitudes, V amplitudes, and periods, have been derived. Photometric metallicities of the ab-type RR Lyrae stars were calculated according to the …
We present WFPC2 VI photometry of a field in the halo of IC 1613, finding 13 RR Lyraes and 11 Cepheids. Our photometry of the red giant branch tip and red clump is used to derive distances to IC 1613, which are consistent with each other and with distances based on the variable stars. We compare these values with similarly-measured distances for the Magellanic Clouds, and are able to measure metallicity dependencies of the RR Lyrae and Cepheid distances by requiring consistent relative distance measurements from the four techniques. For metallicities of [Fe/H] = -1.3 (RR Lyraes) and -1.0 (Ceph…
We review the current status of classical Cepheid and RR Lyrae distance scales. We discuss the most recent theoretical and empirical findings together with pros and cons of different methods. The use of Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars as stellar tracers are also discussed. Preliminary findings concerning the impact that GAIA will have on the calibration of distance determinations and astrophysical parameters are also presented.
(abridged) We present the results of a variable star search in Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal galaxy companion to M31, using HST/WFPC2 observations. Seventy-three variables were found, one of which is an anomalous Cepheid while the others are RR Lyrae stars. The anomalous Cepheid has properties consistent with those found in other dwarf spheroidal galaxies. For the RR Lyrae stars, the mean periods are 0.571 day and 0.363 day for the fundamental mode and first-overtone mode stars, respectively. With this fundamental mode mean period and the mean metallicity determined from the red giant branc…
We have surveyed Andromeda VI, a dwarf spheroidal galaxy companion to M31, for variable stars using F450W and F555W observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. A total of 118 variables were found, with 111 being RR Lyrae, 6 anomalous Cepheids, and 1 variable we were unable to classify. We find that the Andromeda VI anomalous Cepheids have properties consistent with those of anomalous Cepheids in other dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We revise the existing period-luminosity relations for these variables. Further, using these and other available data, we show that there is no clear differe…
We present a search for variable stars in the Fornax dwarf galaxy covering an area of 1/2 a square degree. We have ~30 epochs of VI data. We found and determined periods for more than 500 RR Lyrae, 17 anomalous Cepheids, 6 Population II Cepheids. In addition we have 85 candidate Long Period Variables, the majority of which were previously unknown. We estimated that the average metal abundance of RR Lyrae stars is [Fe/H] ~ -1.6 dex.
We present new BV time series data of the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Current data cover an area of about 0.3 square degrees around the center of the galaxy and allowed us to identify 92 variables. Among them 75 are RR Lyrae stars, 15 are "bona fide" Anomalous Cepheids, one might be a Galactic field RR Lyrae, and one is located along the Carina Red Giant Branch. Expanding upon the seminal photographic investigation by Saha, Monet & Seitzer (1986) we supply for the first time accurate estimates of their pulsation parameters (periods, amplitudes, mean magnitude and colors) on the basis of CC…
There is a serious discrepancy between the distance to the LMC derived from the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation and that obtained by using the Galactic calibration for the luminosity of RR Lyrae stars. It is suggested that this problem might be due to the fact that second parameter effects make it inappropriate to apply Galactic calibrations to RR Lyrae variables in the Magellanic Clouds, i.e. Mv(RR) could depend on both [Fe/H] and on one or more second parameters.
We give a status report of convective Cepheid and RR Lyrae model pulsations. Some striking successes can be reported, despite the use of a rather simple treatment of turbulent convection with a 1D time-dependent diffusion equation for the turbulent energy. It is now possible to obtain stable double-mode (beat) pulsations in both Cepheid and RR Lyrae models with astrophysical parameters, i.e. periods and amplitude ratios, that are in agreement with observations. The turbulent convective models, however, have difficulties giving global agreement with the observations. In particular, the Magellan…
New B, V, I photometry was obtained for a sample of 152 variables (125 RR Lyrae's, 4 anomalous Cepheids, 11 classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and a delta Scuti star) in two regions near the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We derived complete and well sampled B and V light curves, very accurate periods, epochs of maximum light, amplitudes, intensity- and magnitude-averaged apparent luminosities for about 95% of the RR Lyrae stars. All these informations are contained in the photometric catalogue. Metallicities from the Fourier decomposition of the V light curves were derived fo…
It has recently been suggested that the discrepancy between the "long" and "short" distance moduli of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), as inferred from the properties of the Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables, respectively, might be due to the action of "third parameters" between the Galaxy and the LMC, which would make the RR Lyraes in the old LMC globular clusters brighter than their Galactic counterparts by $\simeq 0.3 {mag}$. Through analysis of the RR Lyrae pulsation properties, we show that this idea is not supported by the available data. A satisfactory explanation of the problem has yet t…
Thirty eight long-period (P>10 days), apparently contact binary stars discovered by the OGLE-II project in the SMC appear to be Beta Lyrae-type systems with ellipsoidal variations of the cool components dominating over eclipse effects in the systemic light variations and in the total luminosity. A new period-luminosity- color (PLC) relation has been established for these systems; we call it the PLC-beta relation, to distinguish it from the Cepheid relation. Two versions of the PLC-beta relation - based on the (B-V)0 or (V-I)0 color indices - have been calibrated for 33 systems with (V-I)0>0.25…
A catalog of Cepheid variables is used to probe the kinematics of the Galactic disk. Radial velocities are measured for eight distant Cepheids toward l = 300; these new Cepheids provide a particularly good constraint on the distance to the Galactic center, R_0. We model the disk with both an axisymmetric rotation curve and one with a weak elliptical component, and find evidence for an ellipticity of 0.043 +/- 0.016 near the Sun. Using these models, we derive R_0 = 7.66 +/- 0.32 kpc and v_circ = 237 +/- 12 km/s. The distance to the Galactic center agrees well with recent determinations from the…
(Abridged) We present the results of variable star searches of the M31 dwarf spheroidal companions Andromeda I and Andromeda III using the Hubble Space Telescope. A total of 100 variable stars were found in Andromeda I, while 56 were found in Andromeda III. One variable found in Andromeda I and another in Andromeda III may be Population II Cepheids. In addition to this variable in Andromeda III, another four variables are anomalous Cepheids. We found 72 fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars and 26 first-overtone mode RR Lyrae stars in Andromdea I giving mean periods of 0.575 day and 0.388 day, respe…
We present a catalog of 15 RR Lyrae variable stars in the recently discovered Bootes galaxy -- the most metal-poor simple stellar population with measured RR Lyrae stars. The pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae conform closely to period-abundance trends extrapolated from more metal-rich populations and we estimate the distance of Bootes to be (m-M)_0=18.96+-0.12. The average period (0.69 days), the ratio of type c to type ab pulsators (0.53) and the RRab period shift (-0.07) indicate an Oosterhoff II classification for Bootes, a marked contrast to the other dSph galaxies, which are Oosterho…
CCD observations for 10 (6 previously known and 4 newly discovered) of the 11 RR Lyrae variables in NGC 5897 have been analysed. The period-luminosity and period-amplitude plots indicate that the population of RR Lyrae variables in NGC 5897 includes 3 fundamental mode, 4 first-overtone and 4 second-overtone variables with mean periods 0.828, 0.459 and 0.343 days respectively. The variables have properties that are similar to some of the Oosterhoff type II variables in Omega Centauri. Two of the new variables (V11 and V13) were previously considered to be possible non-variables that lie within …
We discuss recent theoretical and empirical results concerning cosmic distances and discuss the problems affecting the Cepheid and the RR Lyrae distance scales. In particular, we outline the key role that first overtone Cepheids can play to improve the accuracy of distance determinations to nearby galaxies. We also address the positive features of the K-band Period-Luminosity-Metallicity (PLZ_K) relation of RR Lyrae stars when compared to the M_V vs [Fe/H] relation. Moreover, we discuss the impact that accurate multiband data in external galaxies can have on the evolutionary properties of inte…
We present Hubble Space Telescope measurements of surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) distances to early-type galaxies that have hosted Type Ia supernovae (SNIa). The agreement in the relative SBF and SNIa multicolor light curve shape and delta-m_15 distances is excellent. There is no systematic scale error with distance, and previous work has shown that SBF and SNIa give consistent ties to the Hubble flow. However, we confirm a systematic offset of about 0.25 mag in the distance zero points of the two methods, and we trace this offset to their respective Cepheid calibrations. SBF has in the…
The RR Lyrae distance scale is reviewed. In particular, we discuss theoretical and empirical methods currently adopted in the literature. Moreover, we also outline pros and cons of optical and near-infrared mean magnitudes to overcome some of the problems currently affecting RR Lyrae distances. The importance of the K-band Period-Luminosity-Metallicity (PLZ_K) relation for RR Lyrae is also discussed, together with the absolute calibration of the zero-point. We also mention some preliminary results based on NIR (J,K) time series data of the LMC cluster Reticulum. This cluster hosts a sizable sa…
The Period - metallicity - K band luminosity (PLK) relation for RR Lyrae stars in 15 Galactic globular clusters and in the LMC globular cluster Reticulum has been derived. It is based on accurate near infrared (K) photometry combined with 2MASS and other literature data. The PLK relation has been calibrated and compared with the previous empirical and theoretical determinations in literature. The zero point of the absolute calibration has been obtained from the K magnitude of RR Lyr whose distance modulus has been measured via trigonometric parallax with HST. Using this relation we obtain a di…
[Abridged] We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope snapshot program to survey the inner region of the globular cluster NGC 6441 for its variable stars. A total of 57 variable stars was found including 38 RR Lyrae stars, 6 Population II Cepheids, and 12 long period variables. Of the RR Lyrae stars observed in this survey, 26 are pulsating in the fundamental mode with a mean period of 0.753d and 12 are first-overtone mode pulsators with a mean period of 0.365d. These values match up very well with those found in ground-based surveys. Combining all the available data for NGC 6441, we f…
We have undertaken a search for variable stars in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6388 using time-series BV photometry. Twenty-eight new variables were found in this survey, increasing the total number of variables found near NGC 6388 to ~57. A significant number of the variables are RR Lyrae (~14), most of which are probable cluster members. The periods of the fundamental mode RR Lyrae are shown to be unusually long compared to metal-rich field stars. The existence of these long period RRab stars suggests that the horizontal branch of NGC 6388 is unusually bright. This implies that the me…
We employ the very recent photometric data of the OGLE project together with stellar atmosphere and linear pulsation models to determine the distance modulus of the Small Magellanic Cloud from its double-mode Cepheids. Based on the requirement of obtaining the same distance modulus DM from the two types of variables (fundamental & first overtone and first & second overtone), we get DM=19.05 mag, with a very small statistical error (standard deviation) of 0.017 mag. Various systematic and zero point ambiguities (primarily those of the color - temperature transformation) lead to an error of +/-0…
We present an overview of our study of the short period variable stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and in the dwarf galaxies Fornax, Leo I, and NGC 6822. Light curves are presented for RR Lyrae stars, Anomalous Cepheids and, for the first time, for Dwarf Cepheids in the field and in the globular cluster #3 of the Fornax galaxy.
A summary is given of an analysis of the Hipparcos trigonometrical parallaxes and proper motions of classical Cepheids. It is possible for the first time to derive zero-points for the period-luminosity and period-luminosity-colour relations from parallaxes alone, avoiding the problems of less direct methods. The results imply an increase of 8 to 10 percent in the extragalactic distance scale based on Cepheids. The proper motions are used to derive the constants of galactic rotation. Comparison with radial velocity data leads to a confirmation of the Cepheid distance scale derived from the para…
Using the method of ``reduced parallaxes'' for the Halo RR Lyrae stars in the Hipparcos catalogue we derive a zero point of 0.77 $\pm$ 0.26 mag for an assumed slope of 0.18 in the $M_{\rm V}$-[Fe/H] relation. This is 0.28 magnitude brighter than the value Fernley et al. (1998a) derived by employing the method of statistical parallax for the {\it identical} sample and using the same slope. We point out that a similar difference exists between the ``reduced parallaxes'' method and the statistical parallax method for the Cepheids in the Hipparcos catalogue. We also determine the zero point for th…
This paper summaries the status of a large project to improve distance scales of various classes of variable stars. This is being carried out by a large group in Cape Town, Japan, England and the USA. The results are illustrated by giving the distances of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic Centre (Ro) as well as the value of the Hubble Constant, Ho, based on our current results. The classes of variables considered are; Classical Cepheids, Type II Cepheids, RR Lyrae stars, O- and C-Miras
We have identified 82 short-period variable stars in Sextans A from deep WFPC2 observations. All of the periodic variables appear to be short-period Cepheids, with periods as small as 0.8 days for fundamental-mode Cepheids and 0.5 days for first-overtone Cepheids. These objects have been used, along with measurements of the RGB tip and red clump, to measure a true distance modulus to Sextans A of (m-M)_0 = 25.61 +/- 0.07, corresponding to a distance of d = 1.32 +/- 0.04 Mpc. Comparing distances calculated by these techniques, we find that short-period Cepheids (P < 2 days) are accurate distanc…
We use double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) stars from the MACHO variable star database of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to estimate its distance, by utilizing photometric data, linear pulsation and stellar atmosphere models. If we set E_(B-V)=0.11 and [M/H]=-1.5 for LMC, we get M-m=18.52 mag, which is in agreement with the value obtained from Galactic cluster RRd stars. Although the formal statistical error (standard deviation) of M-m derived from the MACHO set is only 0.024 mag, the systematic errors are more substantial. These errors are mostly due to the zero point ambiguity of the temperature sc…
NGC 362 is a bright southern globular cluster for which no extensive variability survey has ever been done. Time-series CCD photometric observations have been obtained. Light curves have been derived with both profile fitting photometry and image subtraction. We developed a simple method to convert flux phase curves to magnitudes, which allows the use of empirical light curve shape vs. physical parameters calibrations. Using the RR Lyrae metallicity and luminosity calibrations, we have determined the relative iron abundances and absolute magnitudes of the stars. The color-magnitude diagram has…
We investigate the properties of the so-called BL Her stars, i.e., Population II Cepheids with periods shorter than 8 days, using updated pulsation models and evolutionary tracks computed adopting a metal abundance in the range of Z=0.0001 to Z=0.004. We derive the predicted Period-Magnitude (PM) and Period-Wesenheit (PW) relations at the various photometric bands and we show that the slopes of these relations are in good agreement with the slopes determined by observed variables in Galactic globular clusters, independently of the adopted M_V(RR)-[Fe/H] relation to get the cluster RR Lyrae-bas…
The catalogue of the Johnson-Cousins B,V and I light curves obtained for 162 variable stars (135 RR Lyrae, 4 candidate Anomalous Cepheids, 11 Classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and 1 delta Scuti star) in two areas close to the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud is presented along with coordinates, finding charts, periods, epochs, amplitudes, and mean quantities (intensity- and magnitude-averaged luminosities) of the variables with full coverage of the light variations. A star by star comparison is made with MACHO and OGLE II photometries based on both variable and constant stars in commo…
We present a 9 million star color-magnitude diagram (9M CMD) of the LMC bar. The 9M CMD reveals a complex superposition of different age and metallicity stellar populations, with important stellar evolutionary phases occurring over 3 orders of magnitude in number density. First, we count the non-variable supergiants, the associated Cepheids, and measure the effective temperatures defining the instability strip. Lifetime predictions of stellar evolution theory are tested, with implications for the origin of low-luminosity Cepheids. The highly-evolved AGB stars have a bimodal distribution in bri…
Results are presented of a study of the variable star populations in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I and in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822, based on time series photometry obtained with the Wide Field Imager of the 2.2 m ESO/MPI telescope (Leo I) and the Very Large Telescope (NGC 6822). We found about 250 (lower limit) variables in Leo I most of which are RR Lyrae stars. In NGC 6822 we identified 450 candidate variables among which about 20 are RR Lyrae stars, and many are low-luminosity, small-amplitude Cepheids.
We briefly describe a method of obtaining relative intrinsic stellar parameters, such as absolute magnitudes and colors from the light curves of fundamental mode RR Lyrae (RRab) stars. Absolute stellar parameters of double-mode variables (Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars) can be computed from their periods and intrinsic colors combined with stellar atmosphere and pulsation models. By using these two methods, one can determine, e.g., the distance of any RRab star, assuming that accurate multicolor photometry is available. By applying this and a related method for computing metallicity, we derive dis…
The Hipparcos proper motions of 220 galactic Cepheids, together with relevant ground-based photometry, have been analysed. The effects of galactic rotation are very clearly seen. Mean values of the Oort constants, A = 14.82 +/- 0.84 km/s/kpc, and B = -12.37 +/- 0.64 km/s/kpc, and of the angular velocity of circular rotation at the Sun, Omega_0 = 27.19 +/- 0.87 km/s/kpc, are derived. Comparison of the value of A with values derived from recent radial velocity solutions confirm, within the errors, the zero-points of the PL and PLC relations derived directly from the Hipparcos trigonometrical par…
We present a complete census of RR Lyrae stars in a halo field of the Andromeda galaxy. These deep observations, taken as part of a program to measure the star formation history in the halo, spanned a period of 41 days with sampling on a variety of time scales, enabling the identification of short and long period variables. Although the long period variables cannot be fully characterized within the time span of this program, the enormous advance in sensitivity provided by the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope allows accurate characterization of the RR Lyrae population i…
We present the first results of a variable star search in the field and in the globular clusters of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Variable stars were identified using the Image Subtraction Technique (Alard 2000) on time-series data obtained with the ESO 2.2 m and the Magellan 6.5 m telescopes. The variable star sample includes RR Lyrae stars, Dwarf Cepheids and Anomalous Cepheids. The pulsation properties (namely: periods, light curves, period-amplitude relations and classification in Oosterhoff types) of Fornax variables from the present study are discussed in some detail.
