The discovery potentials of non-standard physics (NSP) which might be possessed by neutrinos are examined by taking a concrete setting of Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea (T2KK) two detector complex which receives neutrino superbeam from J-PARC. We restrict ourselves into ν_μ and \barν_μ disappearance measurement. We describe here only the non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter and the quantum decoherence. It is shown in some favorable cases T2KK can significantly improve the current bounds on NSP. For NSI, for example, epsilon_{μτ} < 0.03, which is a factor 5 severer than the current one.
In this paper, I present the implications of the large value of θ_13 on the Tokai to Kamioka and Korea setup (T2KK). I study the sensitivity of T2KK when using a 750 kW beam (the design luminosity of T2K planned to be achieved by 2017) and a potential 1.66 MW upgraded beam. In addition I compare the capability of the T2KK setup with the T2HK letter of intent.
We study the earth matter effects in the Tokai-to-Kamioka-and-Korea experiment (T2KK), which is a proposed extension of the T2K (Tokai-to-Kamioka) neutrino oscillation experiment between J-PARC at Tokai and Super-Kamiokande (SK) in Kamioka, where an additional detector is placed in Korea along the same neutrino beam line.By using recent geophysical measurements, we examine the earth matter effects on the oscillation probabilities at Kamioka and Korea. The average matter density along the Tokai-to-Kamioka baseline is found to be 2.6 g/cm^3, and that for the Tokai-to-Korea baseline is 2.85, 2.98…
This paper updates and improves the study of electron neutrino appearance in the framework of two far detectors at different oscillation maxima, specifically, Tokai-To-Kamioka-to-Korea. We used a likelihood based on reconstructed quantities to distinguish charged current $ν_e$ interactions from neutral current background. We studied the efficiency of the likelihood for a 20% photo-coverage in comparison of a 40% photo-coverage. We used a detailed neutrino event simulation to estimate the neutral current background. With these analysis tools we studied the sensitivity of the proposed experiment…
Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) succeeds the very successful Super-K experiment and will consist of a large detector filled with 260~kton purified water and equipped with 40\% photo-coverage. Physics program of Hyper-K is broad, covering from particle physics to astrophysics and astronomy. The Hyper-K 1$^{st}$ detector will be built in Japan, and the 2$^{nd}$ detector is considered to be built in Korea because locating the 2$^{nd}$ detector in Korea improves physics sensitivities in most cases thanks to the longer baseline ($\sim$1,100~km) and larger overburden ($\sim$1,000~m) for Korean candidate …
The ``baseline setup'' for a possible, beyond T2K, next generation long baseline experiment along the J-PARC neutrino beam produced at Tokai, assumes two very large deep-underground Water Cerenkov imaging detectors of about 300 kton fiducial each, located one in Korea and the other in Kamioka but at the same off-axis angle. In this paper, we consider the physics performance of a similar setup but with a single and smaller, far detector, possibly at shallow depth, composed of a 100 kton next generation liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber. The potential location of the detector could be in the …
The T2K neutrino oscillation experiment will start in 2009. In this experiment the center of the neutrino beam from J-PARC at Tokai village will go through underground beneath Super-Kamiokande, reach the sea level east of Korean shore, and an off-axis beam at $0.5^{\circ}$ to $1.0^{\circ}$ can be observed in Korea. We study physics impacts of putting a 100 kt-level Water \cerenkov detector in Korea during the T2K experimental period. For a combination of the $3^{\circ}$ off-axis beam at SK with baseline length L = 295 km and the $0.5^{\circ}$ off-axis beam in the east coast of Korea at L = 100…
We study the discovery potential for the mixing of heavy isospin-singlet neutrinos in extensions of the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment: The Tokai-to-Hyper-Kamiokande (T2HK), the Tokai-to-Hyper-Kamiokande-to-Korea (T2HKK), and a plan of adding a new detector at Oki Islands to the T2HK. We parametrize the mixing of heavy neutrinos in terms of a non-unitary mixing matrix acting on active flavors. It is shown that in the T2HK and T2HKK, the sensitivity to heavy neutrino mixing deteriorates for some values of $CP$-violating phases in the standard and the non-unitary mixing matrices, but the dete…
Oki Island is located between Japan and Korea along the Tokai-To-Kamioka (T2K) baseline. The distance from J-PARC to Oki Island is about 653km, which is twice that of the T2K experiment (L=295km). When the off-axis angle of the neutrino beam from J-PARC is 3.0^\circ (2.0^\circ) at Super-Kamiokande (SK), the off-axis beam (OAB) with 1.4^\circ (0.6^\circ) reaches at Oki Island. We examine physics case of placing a far detector in Oki Island during the T2K experimental period. We estimate the matter density profile along the Tokai-to-Oki baseline by using recent seismological measurements. For a …
In this talk, we show the physics impacts of putting a large Water Cerenkov detector in Korea during the T2K experimental period. The T2K experiment which will start in 2009 plans to use the high intensity conventional neutrino beam from J-PARC at Tokai village, Japan. The center of this beam will reach the sea level between Japan and Korea, and an off-axis beam at 0.5^o to 1.0^o can be observed in Korea. For a combination of the 3^o off-axis beam at SK with baseline length L=295km and the 0.5^o off-axis beam in the east coast of Korea, near Gyeongju, at L=1000km, we find that the neutrino mas…
I discuss why and how powerful is the two-detector setting in neutrino oscillation experiments. I cover three concrete examples: (1) reactor θ_{13} experiments, (2) T2KK, Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea two-detector complex for measuring CP violation, determining the neutrino mass hierarchy, and resolving the eight-fold parameter degeneracy, (3) two-detector setting in a neutrino factory at baselines 3000 km and 7000 km for detecting effects of non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos.
We revisit the sensitivity study of the Tokai-to-Kamioka-and-Korea (T2KK) and Tokai-to-Kamioka-and-Oki (T2KO) proposals where a water Cerenkov detector with the 100 kton fiducial volume is placed in Korea ($L = 1000$ km) and Oki island ($L = 653$ km) in Japan, respectively, in addition to the Super-Kamiokande for determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy and leptonic CP phase ($δ_{CP}$). We systematically study the running ratio of the $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ focusing beams with dedicated background estimation for the $ν_e$ appearance and $ν_μ$ disappearance signals, especially improving treatm…
We have shown in a previous paper that two identical detectors with each fiducial mass of 0.27 megaton water, one in Kamioka and the other in Korea, which receive the (anti-) muon neutrino beam of 4 MW power from J-PARC facility have potential of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy and discovering CP violation by resolving the degeneracies associated with them. In this paper, we point out that the same setting has capability of resolving the θ_{23} octant degeneracy in region where sin^2 2θ_{23} \lsim 0.97 at 2 standard deviation confidence level even for very small values of θ_{13}. Altog…
The Kamioka-Korea two detector system is a powerful experimental setup for resolving neutrino parameter degeneracies and probing CP violation in neutrino oscillation. In this paper, we study sensitivities of this same setup to several nonstandard neutrino physics such as quantum decoherence, tiny violation of Lorentz symmetry, and nonstandard interactions of neutrinos with matter. In most cases, the Kamioka-Korea two-detector setup is more sensitive than the one-detector setup, except for the Lorentz symmetry violation with CPT violation, and the nonstandard neutrino interactions with matter. …
We study physics potential of placing a far detector in the east coast of Korea, where the off-axis beam from J-PARC at Tokai village for the T2K project has significant intensity at a few GeV range. In particular we examine the capability of determining the mass hierarchy pattern and the CP phase of the lepton-flavor-mixing matrix when a 100 kt water Cerenkov detector is placed at various locations in Korea for the off-axis beam (OAB) of 2.5 deg. and 3 deg. at the Super-Kamiokande site. The best results are found for a combination of 3 deg. OAB at SK (L = 295 km) and 0.5 deg. OAB at L = 1000k…
It has been pointed out that the mixing of an eV-scale sterile neutrino with active flavors can lead to loss of sensitivity to the $θ_{23}$ octant (sign of $\sin^2θ_{23}-1/2$) in long baseline experiments, because the main oscillation probability $P_0=4\sin^2θ_{23}\sin^2θ_{13}\sin^2Δ_{31}$ can be degenerate with the sum of the interferences with the solar oscillation amplitude and an active-sterile oscillation amplitude in both neutrino and antineutrino oscillations, depending on CP phases. In this paper, we show that the above degeneracy is resolved by measuring the same beam at different bas…
I discuss some theoretical aspects of how to observe leptonic CP violation. It is divided into two parts, one for CP violation due to Majorana, and the other more conventional leptonic Kobayashi-Maskawa (KM) phases. In the first part, I estimate the effect of Majorana phase to observable of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments by paying a careful attention to the definition of the atmospheric scale Delta m^2. In the second part, I discuss Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea two detector complex which receives neutrino superbeam from J-PARC as a concrete setting for discovering CP violation due to the…
Hyper-Kamiokande consists of two identical water-Cherenkov detectors of total 520~kt with the first one in Japan at 295~km from the J-PARC neutrino beam with 2.5$^{\textrm{o}}$ Off-Axis Angles (OAAs), and the second one possibly in Korea in a later stage. Having the second detector in Korea would benefit almost all areas of neutrino oscillation physics mainly due to longer baselines. There are several candidate sites in Korea with baselines of 1,000$\sim$1,300~km and OAAs of 1$^{\textrm{o}}$$\sim$3$^{\textrm{o}}$. We conducted sensitivity studies on neutrino oscillation physics for a second de…
The Tokai-to-Kamioka-and-Korea (T2KK) neutrino oscillation experiment under examination can have a high sensitivity to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy for a combination of relatively large (\sim 3.0^circ) off-axis angle beam at Super-Kamiokande (SK) and small (\sim 0.5^circ) off-axis angle at L \sim 1,000km in Korea. We elaborate previous studies by taking into account smearing of reconstructed neutrino energy due to finite resolution of electron or muon energies, nuclear Fermi motion and resonance production, as well as the neutral current π^0 production background to the nu_mu to nu_e …
The muon decay-at-rest ($μ$-DAR) facility provides us with an ideal platform to probe purely muonic charged-current nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSIs). We propose to probe this class of NSI effects using antineutrinos from a $μ$-DAR source in conjunction with neutrinos from the future Tokai to Kamioka superbeam experiment with megaton Hyper Kamiokande detector (T2HK). Even though muonic NSIs are absent in neutrino production at T2HK, we show that our proposed hybrid setup comprising $μ$-DAR and T2HK helps in alleviating the parameter degeneracies that can arise in data. Analytic consider…
The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) long-baseline neutrino experiment consists of a muon neutrino beam, produced at the J-PARC accelerator, a near detector complex and a large 295km distant far detector. The present work utilizes the T2K event timing measurements at the near and far detectors to study neutrino time of flight as function of derived neutrino energy. Under the assumption of a relativistic relation between energy and time of flight, constraints on the neutrino rest mass can be derived. The sub-GeV neutrino beam in conjunction with timing precision of order tens of ns provide sensitivity to…
We perform a detailed combined fit to the $\overline ν_e \rightarrow \overline ν_e$ disappearence data of the Daya Bay experiment and the appearance $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_{e}$ and disappearance $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_μ$ data of the Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) one in the presence of two models of new physics affecting neutrino oscillations, namely a model where sterile neutrinos can propagate in a large compactified extra dimension and a model where non-standard interactions (NSI) affect the neutrino production and detection. We find that the Daya Bay $\oplus$ T2K data combination constrains the largest ra…
Having a far detector in Korea for the J-PARC neutrino beam in addition to one at Kamioka has been shown to be a powerful way to lift neutrino parameter ($Δm^2$ and mixing angles) degeneracies. In this talk, I report the sensitivity of the same experimental setup to nonstandard neutrino physics, such as quantum decoherence, violation of Lorentz symmetry (with/without CPT invariance), and nonstandard neutrino interactions with matter. In many cases, two detector setup is better than one detector setup at SK. This observation makes another support for the two detector setup.
We explore the possibility of simultaneous determination of neutrino mass hierarchy and the CP violating phase by using two identical detectors placed at different baseline distances. We focus on a possible experimental setup using neutrino beam from J-PARC facility in Japan with beam power of 4MW and megaton (Mton)-class water Cherenkov detectors, one placed in Kamioka and the other at somewhere in Korea. We demonstrate, under reasonable assumptions of systematic uncertainties, that the two-detector complex with each fiducial volume of 0.27 Mton has potential of resolving neutrino mass hierar…
The three neutrino model has 9 physical parameters, 3 neutrino masses, 3 mixing angles and 3 CP violating phases. Among them, neutrino oscillation experiments can probe 6 parameters: 2 mass squared differences, 3 mixing angles, and 1 CP phase. The experiments performed so far determined the magnitudes of the two mass squared differences, the sign of the smaller mass squared difference, the magnitudes of two of the three mixing angles, and the upper bound on the third mixing angle. The sign of the larger mass squared difference (the neutrino mass hierarchy pattern), the magnitude of the third m…
I try to give an overview of future prospects of the experimental exploration of the unknowns in the neutrino mass pattern and the lepton flavor mixing. Because of the nature of the lectures on which this manuscript is based, I give some pedagogical discussions to prepare for the presentation in the later part. I start from measuring θ_{13} by reactors and accelerators as a prerequisite for proceeding to search for leptonic CP violation. I then discuss how CP violation can be uncovered, and how the neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined. I do these by resolving so called the ``parameter deg…
If the atmospheric neutrino oscillation amplitude, sin^2 2theta_atm is not maximal, there is a two fold ambiguity in the neutrino parameter space: sin^2 theta_atm>0.5 or sin^2 theta_atm<0.5. In this article, we study the impact of this degeneracy, the so-called octant degeneracy, on the T2KK experiment, which is a proposed extension of the T2K (Tokai-to-Kaimoka) neutrino oscillation experiment with an additional water cherenkov detector placed in Korea. We find that the degeneracy between sin^2 theta_atm= 0.40 and 0.60 can be resolved at the 3sigma level for sin^2 2theta_rct>0.12 (0.08) for th…
In this paper, we consider the physics performance of a single far detector composed of a 100 kton next generation Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) possibly located at shallow depth, coupled to the J-PARC neutrino beam facility with a realistic 1.66 MW operation of the Main Ring. The new far detector could be located in the region of Okinoshima islands (baseline $L\sim 658$ km). Our emphasis is based on the measurement of the $θ_{13}$ and $δ_{CP}$ parameters, possibly following indications for a non-vanishing $θ_{13}$ in T2K, and relies on the opportunity offered by the LAr TPC t…
If the flavor dependent non-standard interactions (NSI) in neutrino propagation exist, then the matter effect is modified and the modification is parametrized by the dimensionless parameter $ε_{αβ}~(α,β=e, μ, τ)$. In this paper we discuss the sensitivity of the T2HKK experiment, whose possibility is now seriously discussed as a future extension of the T2K experiment, to such NSI. On the assumption that $ε_{αμ}=0~(α=e, μτ)$ and $ε_{ττ}=|ε_{eτ}|/(1+ε_{ee})$, which are satisfied by other experiments to a good approximation, we find that, among the possible off-axis flux configurations of $1.3^\ci…
