A short overview about the potential of polarized beams at future colliders is given. In particular the baseline design for polarized beams at the ILC is presented and the physics case for polarized $e^-$ and $e^+$ is discussed. In order to fulfil the precision requirements spin tracking from the source to the interaction point is needed. Updates concerning the theoretical calculations as well as their implementation in simulation codes are reported.
We summarise the present status of the proton spin problem and the physics possibilities for future polarized ep and pp colliders. This summary is based on the presentations and discussion sessions at the workshop ``The Spin Structure of the Proton and Polarized Collider Physics'' (Trento, July 23-28, 2001).
We study the production cross sections for squarks and gluinos in collision of longitudinally polarized hadrons. The corresponding polarized partonic cross sections are computed in leading order supersymmetric QCD. The resulting asymmetries are evaluated for the polarized proton collider RHIC, as well as for hypothetical polarized options of the Tevatron and the LHC. These asymmetries turn out to be sizable over a wide range of supersymmetric particle masses, thus potentially opening a window to detailed sparticle spectroscopy at future polarized hadron colliders.
We study photoproduction of jets and heavy flavors in a polarized collider mode of HERA and in polarized $ep$ collisions at $\sqrt{S}\approx 30$ GeV. We examine the sensitivity of the cross sections and their asymmetries to the proton's polarized gluon distribution and to the completely unknown parton distributions of longitudinally polarized photons.
We study the inclusive production of doubly heavy baryon $Ξ_{cc}$ at polarized photon collider. Our results show that proper choice of the initial beam polarizations may increase the production rate of $Ξ_{cc}$ approximately 10%.
Parity violation induced by the chromo-anapole form factor of the bottom quark, generated from weak corrections, is studied in polarized hadron collisions. The forward-backward asymmetry in the bottom quark pair production at polarized $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ colliders is evaluated in the Standard Model and in a Two Higgs Doublet Model to examine the effects of parity violation. In the models studied, promising results are found for polarized $p\bar{p}$ colliders.
We examine the utility of employing polarized lepton (electron and muon) beams to perform indirect searches for scalar leptoquarks. We find that polarization can extend the reach in excluding leptoquark masses for both $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ machines. Polarization can also provide a diagnostic tool for determining leptoquark couplings.
Polarized e- and e+ at the International Linear Collider play an important role for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unravelling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics programme at the first energy stage at sqrt{s}=500 GeV benefits strongly from the polarization of both beams. But also at 1 TeV as well as at a possible multi-TeV design of a linear collider, CLIC, the physics output is greatly enriched by beam polarization. An overview is given of the impact of providing polarized e+ at the linear collider in addition to polarized e- for physics stud…
We study top quark pair productions at a polarized photon collider from an e(+)e(-) linear collider (LC) in various improved technicolor model, namely, the one-family walking technicolor model, the top-color-assisted technicolor model, and the top-color-assisted multiscale technicolor model. Recent constraint on the top-pion mass from the precision data of R(b) is considered. It is shown that, considering only the statistical errors, a polarized photon collider from a 500 GeV LC with an integrated luminosity of 500 inverse fb is sufficient for distinguishing the three improved technicolor mode…
Measurements of g_1 at low x and low Q^2 are expected to provide a sensitive probe of the transition from Regge to perturbative QCD dynamics, offering a new testing ground for models of small x physics. We discuss the potential of polarized ep colliders (Polarized HERA and eRHIC) to investigate this physics --- varying Q^2 between 0.01 and 1 GeV^2 --- and to constrain the high-energy part of the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum-rule for polarized photoproduction.
We discuss the sensitivity to four-fermion contact interactions of the process of fermion-pair production at the e^+ - e^- Linear Collider (LC), with E_{CM}=0.5 TeV and longitudinally polarized electron beam. The analysis is based on polarized integrated cross sections with optimal cuts. Beam polarization and optimization are shown to have a crucial role in the derivation of model-independent constraints on the new interactions from the data.
We analyze the spin correlations of the top quark pairs produced at Photon Linear Colliders. We employ the circular polarized photon beams and general spin basis for the top quark pair. We consider general spin bases to find a strong spin correlation between produced top quark and anti-top quark. We show the cross-section in these bases and discuss the characteristics of results.
We consider the possibility of observing deviations from the Standard Model gauge-boson self-couplings at a future $500$~GeV $e^+ e^-$ linear collider. We concentrate on the case in which the electroweak symmetry breaking sector is strongly interacting and there are no new resonances within reach of the collider. We find a sensitivity to the anomalous couplings that is two orders of magnitude higher than that achievable at LEP II. We also show how a polarized electron beam extends the reach of the collider, allowing experiments to probe different directions in parameter space.
The energy spectra of the lepton(s) in eebar --> ttbar --> l^{+-}X/ l^+l^- X' at next linear colliders (NLC) are analyzed a model-independent way for arbitrary longitudinal beam polarizations as a general test of possible anomalous top-quark couplings.
Using the facts that in Gauge-Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking schemes, masses of the right and the left sfermions can differ widely, and the gravitino is the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle, we show that it is possible to obtain unambiguous signatures of such schemes in a high energy $e^+e^-$ collider if one looks at the asymmetries in the cross-sections for certain final states with left-and right-polarized beams.
The four-fermion contact-interaction searches in the process $e^+e^-\toμ^+μ^-$ at a future $e^+e^-$ Linear Collider with c.m. energy $\sqrt{s}=0.5$ TeV and with both beams longitudinally polarized are studied. We evaluate the corresponding model-independent constraints on the coupling constants, emphasizing the role of beam polarization, and make a comparison with the case of Bhabha scattering.
We examine anomalous ZZH and gammaZH interactions in the process e+e- -> HZ followed by Z -> l+l- at a linear collider. We study the effects of beam polarization, both longitudinal and transverse, in probing these anomalous couplings. We study various correlations constructed out of the initial and final state lepton momenta and the spins of electron and positron. We evaluate the sensitivity of these observables to probe anomalous couplings at the linear collider.
A new handed interaction between subconstituents of quarks could be at the origin of some small parity violating effects in one-jet inclusive production. Within a few years, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) will be used as a polarized proton-proton collider. In this context, we analyse the possibilities of disentangling some new parity violating effects from the standard spin asymmetries which are expected due to the Standard Model QCD-Weak interference. We also explore the possibilities of placing some more stringent limits on the quark compositeness scale $Λ$ thanks to measurements…
We consider the production of tau pairs by electron-positron colliding beams at the maximum cross section near the threshold. At this energy tau pairs are produced mostly in the s-wave which implies that the spin of the tau pairs are almost always pointing in the beam direction independent of the production angle. When both electrons and positrons are longitudinally polarized in the same direction, for example 90%, one can obtain tau pairs with 99% polarization in the direction of the polarization vectors of the incident beams. Tests of CP violation and study of the structure of weak interacti…
In the minimal supersymmetric standard model with R-parity violation, the lepton number violating top quark interactions can contribute to the top pair production at a linear collider via tree-level u-channel squark exchange diagrams. We calculate such contributions and find that in the allowed range of these R-violating couplings, the top pair production rate as well as the top quark polarization and the forward-backward asymmetry can be significantly altered. By comparing the unpolarized beams with the polarized beams, we find that the polarized beams are more powerful in probing such new ph…
The Weizsaecker-Williams transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon distributions can be probed in the production of a hard dijet in semi-inclusive DIS. This process is sensitive not only to the conventional but also to the linearly polarized gluon distribution. The latter gives rise to an azimuthal dependence of the dijet cross section and therefore can be distinguished from the former. Feasibility study of a measurement of these TMDs through dijet production at a future electron-ion collider shows that the extraction of the distribution of linearly polarized gluons with a statistical accuracy…
A successful interpretation of the cross sections for elastic and inelastic vector meson production can be made if one assumes the underlying dynamics to be governed by hard partonic subprocesses. Extending these partonic approaches to longitudinally polarized electron-proton collisions, we estimate the expected production asymmetries at the HERA collider. The anticipated statistical errors on these asymmetries mostly turn out to be larger than the asymmetries themselves, such that an experimental observation of these asymmetries at HERA looks not feasible.
The production of $W^{\pm}$ and $Z^0$ bosons in collisions of longitudinally polarized protons allows to access various combinations of the polarized quark distributions from the study of double and single spin asymmetries. We compute the ${\cal O}(α_s)$ corrections to these asymmetries as function of the vector boson rapidity $y$ in the hadron-hadron centre-of-mass frame. Detailed studies of the numerical impact of the next-to-leading order corrections are presented. The theoretical uncertainties of an extraction of polarized quark distributions from future vector boson production data are in…
We discuss the polarization of top quarks produced at a polarized linear e^+ e^- collider. Close-to-maximal values of the top quark polarization can be achieved with longitudinal beam polarizations (h_- = -0.80, h_+ = +0.625) or (h_- = +0.80, h_+ = -0.625) at intermediate beam energies. The option (h_- = -0.80, h_+ = +0.625) has to be preferred since this choice is quite stable against variations of the beam polarization. All our quantitative results have been obtained at NLO QCD.
For contact-interaction searches at the Linear Collider, we discuss the advantages of polarizing both the electron and the positron beams as compared with polarizing only the electron beam. In particular, for the processes e^+e^-\to μ^+μ^-, τ^+τ^-, b\bar{b} and c\bar{c} at a future e^+e^- collider with \sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV we derive model-independent bounds on the four-fermion contact interaction parameters from studies of the helicity cross sections.
We study the potential of the next-generation $e^+ e^-$ linear colliders with longitudinally polarized beams, to restrict the values of the anomalous trilinear couplings $WWγ$ and $WWZ$ from the measurement of the process $e^+ e^-\to W^+ W^-$. Along with initial $e^+e^-$ polarization, we account also for the possibilities offered by cross sections for polarized final $W$, in order to disentangle the constraints on the various constants. The results show the essential role of the initial beams polarization in improving the bounds obtained from the unpolarized case.
Recently proposed idea of unparticles arising due to a scale invariant sector in the theory can give rise to effective operators with different Lorentz structures. We show that by using the different polarization options at the future linear e+e- colliders, the nature of these effective operators can be easily understood. The unique feature of a complex phase in the propagator of the unparticle can also be understood uniquely for the different spins by exploiting the initial beam polarizations at the International Linear Collider (ILC).
We study selectron production at an e-e- linear collider. With the help of transverse beam polarizations, we define CP sensitive observables in the production process e- e- --> selectron_L selectron_R. This process proceeds via t-channel and u-channel exchange of neutralinos, and is sensitive to CP violation in the neutralino sector. We present numerical results and estimate the significances to which the CP sensitive observables can be measured.
A future e+e- Linear Collider has a large physics potential for the discovery of new physics beyond the Standard Model and precision studies of the Standard Model itself. It is well suited to complement and extend the physics program of the LHC concerning the precise determination of the underlying theory. The use of polarized beams at a LC will be one of the decisive tools.
We discuss four-fermion contact-interaction searches in the processes e^+e^-\toμ^+μ^-, c{\bar c} and b{\bar b} at a future e^+e^- Linear Collider with c.m. energy \sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV and with both beams longitudinally polarized. Our analysis is based on the measurements of familiar polarized observables such as the total cross section and the forward-backward/left-right asymmetries, and accounts for the general set of contact interaction couplings as independent, non-zero, parameters thus avoiding simplifying, model-dependent, assumptions. We derive the corresponding model-independent constraints…
We discuss electron-electron contact-interaction searches in the Bhabha and Moller processes at planned Linear Colliders run in the electron-positron and electron-electron modes, with longitudinally polarized beams. Our analysis is based on the measurement, for the two processes, of polarized differential cross sections that allow to disentangle the different, independent, four-fermion couplings. We evaluate by a model-independent analysis the sensitivities to the contact coupling constants, emphasizing the role of the available beam polarization and the complementarity of the two processes in…
Top quark pair production is presented at a polarized Muon Collider above the threshold region. The off-diagonal spin basis is the natural basis for this discussion as the top quark pairs are produced in an essentially unique spin configuration for 100% polarization. Modest polarization, say 30%, can lead to 90% of all top quark pair events being in one spin configuration. This will lead to sensitive tests on anomalous top quark couplings.
Concerning new physics beyond the Standard Model we explore the discovery and analysis potentials of polarized (hadronic) experiments and we compare with the unpolarized case. For discovery, beam polarization is helpful in the case of purely hadronic new interactions. In any case, beam polarization provides us a unique piece of information on the chiral and flavour structures.
Top quark pair production by (polarized) gamma gamma collisions offers an interesting testing ground of the Standard Model and its extensions. In this Letter we present results for differential cross sections of top quark pair production and decay including QCD radiative corrections. We take into account the full dependence on the top quark spins. We give analytic and numerical results for single and double differential angular distributions of t tbar decay products which are due to top quark polarizations and spin correlations in the intermediate state.
We present a detailed investigation of the NLO polarization of the top quark in t t-bar production at a polarized linear e^+ e^- collider with longitudinally polarized beams. By appropiately tuning the polarization of the beams one can achieve close to maximal values for the top quark polarization over most of the forward hemisphere for a large range of energies. This is quite welcome since the rate is largest in the forward hemisphere. One can also tune the beam polarization to obtain close to zero polarization over most of the forward hemisphere.
The calibration QED process cross sections for experiments on planned electron-photon and photon-photon colliders for detecting the small angles scattered particles are calculated. These processes describe the creation of two jets moving sufficiently close to the beam axis directions. The jets containing two and three particles including charged leptons, photons and pseudoscalar mesons are considered explicitly. Considering the pair production subprocesses we take into account both bremsstrahlung and double photon mechanisms. The obtained results are suitable for further numerical calculations…
We study the effects of O(alpha_s) supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) corrections on the total production rate and kinematic distributions of polarized and unpolarized top-pair production in pp and p anti-p collisions. At the Fermilab Tevatron p anti-p collider, top-quark pairs are mainly produced via quark-antiquark annihilation, q anti-q -> t anti-t, while at the CERN LHC pp collider gluon-gluon scattering, g g -> t anti-t, dominates. We compute the complete set of O(alpha_s) SQCD corrections to both production channels and study their dependence on the parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standa…
We study the potential impact of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering data from a future electron-ion collider (EIC) on longitudinally polarized parton distribution (PDFs). We perform a PDF determination using the NNPDF methodology, based on sets of deep-inelastic EIC pseudodata, for different realistic choices of the electron and proton beam energies. We compare the results to our current polarized PDF set, NNPDFpol1.0, based on a fit to fixed-target inclusive DIS data. We show that the uncertainties on the first moments of the polarized quark singlet and gluon distributions are substantially …
For the processes e+e-\to μ+μ-, τ+τ-, b\bar{b} and c\bar{c} at a future e+e- collider with \sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV, we examine the sensitivity of the helicity cross sections to four-fermion contact interactions. If longitudinal polarization of the electron beam were available, two polarized integrated cross sections would offer the opportunity to separate the helicity cross sections and, in this way, to derive model-independent bounds on the relevant parameters. The measurement of these polarized cross sections with optimal kinematical cuts could significantly increase the sensitivity of helicity cro…
We discuss the potential of a $0.5\hskip 2pt TeV$ linear collider to explore manifestations of extended (or alternative) electroweak models of current interest, through measurements of the reaction $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-$ with both initial and final states polarization. Specifically, we consider the possibility to put stringent constraints on lepton mixing (or extended lepton couplings) and $Z-Z^\prime$ mixing, showing in particular the usefulness of polarization in order to disentangle these effects.
The present theoretical status of spin-dependent parton densities Delta f^γ(x,Q^2) of circularly polarized photons is briefly reviewed. It is then demonstrated that measurements of the deep-inelastic spin asymmetry A_1^γ\simeq g_1^γ/F_1^γ and of di-jet rapidity distributions at a future linear e^+e^- collider appear to be particularly suited for a determination the spin-dependent photonic quark and gluon densities, respectively. Special emphasis is devoted to a comparison of the different sources of polarized photons at a linear collider: the equivalent photon approximation and backscattered l…
We present a detailed phenomenological study of charged-current-mediated deep-inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized nucleons at a future Electron-Ion Collider. A new version of the event generator package DJANGOH, extended by capabilities to handle processes with polarized nucleons, is introduced and used to simulate charged current deep-inelastic scattering including QED, QCD, and electroweak radiative effects. We carefully explore the range of validity and the accuracy of the Jacquet-Blondel method to reconstruct the relevant kinematic variables from the measured hadronic final s…
We discuss contact-interaction searches in the processes e^+e^-\to μ^+μ^-, b\bar{b} and c\bar{c} at an e^+e^- Linear Collider with c.m. energy \sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV and with longitudinally polarized beams. The measurement of polarized cross sections allows to study the individual helicity cross sections, and consequently to derive separate, model-independent, constraints on the four-fermion contact interaction couplings. We evaluate the reach on those parameters foreseeable in the case of both electron and positron polarization fixed at some reference values, and compare it with the situation where…
Recently determined next-to-leading order sets of polarized parton distributions are used to study large-p_T $\vec{p}\vec{p}\rightarrow γ+X$ at $\sqrt{s}=38, 100 and 500 GeV$. Certain conversion terms, necessary to use the above sets, are determined. It is concluded that, to distinguish between the above sets, planned RHIC experiments should be successful, in particular at c.m. photon pseudorapidity $\simeq 1$, and that a proposed HERA-$\vec{N}$ fixed target experiment should have rather large accuracy at relatively large $x_T (=2p_T/\sqrt{s})$.
QCD motivated polarized parton distributions, evolved directly in $x$-space, are used to predict rates for prompt photon production at RHIC centre of mass energies. Various scenarios for the polarized gluon distributions are considered and compared, and the possibility of using large $p_T$ processes in polarized $pp$ collision experiments to choose between them is analyzed.
Numerous non-standard dynamics are described by contact-like effective interactions that can manifest themselves through deviations of the cross sections from the Standard Model predictions. If one such deviation were observed, one should try to identify to a given confidence level the actual source among the possible non-standard interactions that in principle can explain it. We here estimate the potential identification reach on different New Physics effective interactions, obtainable from the angular distributions of lepton pair production processes at the planned International Linear Colli…
The breaking of parity, a fundamental symmetry between left and right is best understood in the framework of left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. We show that the production of a heavy right-handed neutrino at the proposed Large Hadron-Electron Collider (LHeC) could give us the most simple and direct hint of the scale of this breaking in left-right symmetric theories. This production mode gives a lepton number violating signal with $ΔL=2$ which is very clean and has practically no standard model background. We highlight that the right-handed nature of $W_R$ exchange which defi…
We analyze different observables to study the magnetic dipole moment of the tau pairs produced by photon linear colliders. We use the circular polarized photon beam and study distributions of polarized $τ$ final pairs to define sensibly asymmetries to magnetic dipole moment.
We discuss the possibilities of testing of perturbative quantum chromodynamics through azimuthal asymmetries in polarized ep in the context of future collider and fixed target facilities, such as Electron Ion Collider and TESLA-N.
We study leptoquark production using polarized $eγ$ colliders for the center of mass energies $\sqrt s=500$~GeV and 1~TeV. We show that using polarization asymmetries the ten different types of leptoquarks listed by Buchmüller, Rückl and Wyler can be distinquished from one another for leptoquark masses essentially up to the kinematic limit of the respective colliders. Thus, if a leptoquark were discovered an $eγ$ collider could play a crucial role in determining its origins.
A number of physics arguments for a high-luminosity high energy polarized Electron- Nucleon/Nucleus-Collider (i.e. with a luminosity of at least 10^{33} cm^{-2} sec^{-1} and an invariant energy squarred of at least s >= 100 GeV^2) are presented. The main purpose of this machine would be generally speaking the investigation of QCD beyond the twist-2 level respectively of nuclear physics beyond the level of 'effective' models. Specific topics are: twist-2 and twist-3 spin-asymmetries as probes of both the internal hadron structure and the hadronization process, Off-Forward-Parton-Distributions a…
We study the sensitivity to the Z' couplings of the processes $e^+e^-\to l^+l^-,\bar{b}b$ and $\bar{c}c$ at the linear collider with $\sqrt{s}=500 GeV$ with initial beam polarization, for typical extended model examples. To this aim, we use suitable integrated, polarized, observables directly related to the helicity cross sections that carry information on the individual Z' chiral couplings to fermions. We discuss the derivation of separate, model-independent limits on the couplings in the case of no observed indirect Z' signal within the expected experimental accuracy. In the hypothesis that …
It is demonstrated that measurements of the spin asymmetry for di-jet production at future polarized colliders appear to be particularly suited for a first determination of the so far unmeasured parton densities of circularly polarized photons.
We calculate the $cos~2 ϕ$ asymmetry in $J/ψ$ production in electron-proton collision for the kinematics of the planned electron-ion collider (EIC). This directly probes the Weiszäcker-Williams (WW) type linearly polarized gluon distribution. Assuming generalized factorization, we calculate the asymmetry at next-to-leading-order (NLO) when the energy fraction of the $J/ψ$ satisfies $z<1$ and the dominating subprocess is $γ^* +g \rightarrow c + {\bar c}+g$. We use non-relativistic QCD based color singlet model for $J/ψ$ production. We investigate the small $x$ region which will be accessible at…
Contactlike nonstandard effective interactions can be revealed through deviations of observables from the Standard Model predictions. If such deviations were observed, the relevant source should be identified among the possible models that could explain them. We estimate the expected discrimination reach on the ADD model of gravity in large compactified extra dimensions, against the compositeness-inspired four-fermion contact interaction. As basic observables we take the differential cross sections for fermion-pair production at a 0.5-1 TeV electron-positron linear collider with both beams lon…
We explore the possibility of deriving model independent limits on the anomalous trilinear electroweak gauge boson couplings from high energy $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-$, by combining the cross sections for the different initial and final states polarizations integrated with suitable kinematical cuts. In the case of the CP conserving couplings the limits can be disentangled, and are given by simple mathematical expressions. Numerical results show the advantages of this approach, in particular the important role of polarization in improving the bounds.
We explore the effects of neutrino and electron mixing with exotic heavy leptons in the process e^+e^-\to W^+W^- within E_6 models. We examine the possibility of uniquely distinguishing and identifying such effects of heavy neutral lepton exchange from Z-Z' mixing within the same class of models and also from analogous ones due to competitor models with anomalous trilinear gauge couplings (AGC) that can lead to very similar experimental signatures at the e^+e^- International Linear Collider (ILC) for \sqrt{s}=350, 500 GeV and 1 TeV. Such clear identification of the model is possible by using a…
The main possibilities of investigation of leptons and bosons birth in interaction of polarized photons are considered. The usage of $γγ\to f \bar{f} [+γ]$ reactions for the luminosity measurement on linear photon collider is analyzed. The achievable precision of the luminosity measuring is considered and calculated. The first-order QED correction to $γγ\to l \bar{l}$ scattering is analyzed. Differential cross section of process $γγ\to 4l$ is calculated using the helicity amplitudes method as well as covariant method of precision calculations. All possible polarization states of interacting pa…
The present contribution reports a study of the effects of anomalous gauge and fermionic couplings in the process $e^+e^- -> W^+W^-$ at the Next Linear Collider focusing in particular on the option of polarized beams. We conclude that polarized beams with adjustable degree of polarization would constitute a very significant tool in the search for new physics.
The recent proposals concerning the usage of the real polarized gamma beam, obtained by the Compton backscattering of the laser photons off the electron beams from either the linear or circular accelerators were considered. The heavy quark photoproduction process giving a unique opportunity to measure polarized gluon distribution was investigated.
