Shell galaxies are considered the debris of recent accretion/merging episodes. Their high frequency in low density environments suggest that such episodes could drive the secular evolution for at least some fraction of the early-type galaxy population. We present here the preliminary results of ultraviolet and X-ray data for a sample of three shell galaxies, namely NGC 474, NGC 7070A and ESO 2400100. The Far UV morphology and photometry are derived using the observations obtained with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and the XMM- Newton Optical Monitor. We aim at investigating the rejuvenation processes in the stellar population using the UV information as well as at gaining information about the possible evolution with time of the X-ray emission due interaction/merging processes.
We present a comparison between the 2001 XMM-Newton and 2005 Suzaku observations of the quasar, PG1211+143 at z=0.0809. Variability is observed in the 7 keV iron K-shell absorption line (at 7.6 keV in the quasar frame), which is significantly weaker in 2005 than during the 2001 XMM-Newton observation. From a recombination timescale of <4 years, this implies an absorber density n>0.004 particles/cm3, while the absorber column is 5e22<N_H <1 1e24 particles/cm2. Thus the sizescale of the absorber is too compact (pc scale) and the surface brightness of the dense gas too high (by 9-10 orders of mag…
LMC2 has the highest X-ray surface brightness of all know supergiant shells in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The X-ray emission peaks within the ionized filaments that define the shell boundary, but also extends beyond the southern border of LMC2 as an X-ray bright spur. ROSAT HRI images reveal the X-ray emission from LMC2 and the spur to be truly diffuse, indicating a hot plasma origin. We have obtained ROSAT PSPC and ASCA SIS spectra to study the physical conditions of the hot gas interior to LMC2 and the spur. Raymond-Smith thermal plasma model fits to the X-ray spectra, constrained by …
Using a radiative transfer code (DUSTY) parameters of the circumstellar dust shells of 15 hot post-AGB stars have been derived. Combining the optical, near and far-infrared (ISO, IRAS) data of the stars, we have reconstructed their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and estimated the dust temperatures, mass loss rates, angular radii of the inner boundary of the dust envelopes and the distances to these stars. The mass loss rates (10$^{-6}-10^{-5}$M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$) are intermediate between stars at the tip of the AGB and the PN phase. We have also studied the ISO spectra of 7 of these sta…
High resolution ultraviolet spectra with HST-GHRS of two stars in the direction of the supergiant shell LMC4 unambiguously show absorption by substantial quantities of CIV gas at velocities near the the systemic velocity of the LMC. In combination with the detection of diffuse X-rays from the LMC4 by ROSAT and other supporting data, this demonstrates that the interior of LMC4 is filled with tenuous hot gas. CIV interstellar absorption is seen over a large velocity range, having at least 2 components at about 280 and 320 km/s. The strong component at 280 km/s has a width of 40 km/s and a column…
We investigate a scenario of photons scattering by electrons within a relativistic outflow. The outflow is composed of discrete shells with different speeds. One shell emits radiation for a short duration. Some of this radiation is scattered by the shell(s) behind. We calculate in a simple two-shell model the observed scattered flux density as a function of the observed primary flux density, the normalized arrival time delay between the two emission components, the Lorentz factor ratio of the two shells and the scattering shell's optical depth. Thomson scattering in a cold shell and inverse Co…
The excess of far-ultraviolet (far-UV) radiation in elliptical galaxies has remained one of their most enduring puzzles. In contrast, the origin of old blue stars in the Milky Way, hot subdwarfs, is now reasonably well understood: they are hot stars that have lost their hydrogen envelopes by various binary interactions. Here, we review the main evolutionary channels that produce hot subdwarfs in the Galaxy and present the results of binary population synthesis simulations that reproduce the main properties of the Galactic hot-subdwarf population. Applying the same model to elliptical galaxies,…
(shortened version) We show that many observations of W44, a supernova remnant in the galactic plane at a distance of about 2500 pc, are remarkably consistent with the simplest realistic model. The model remnant is evolving in a smooth ambient medium of fairly high density, about 6 cm^-3 on average, with a substantial density gradient. At the observed time it has an age of about 20,000 years, consistent with the age of the associated pulsar, and a radius of 11 to 13 pc. Over most of the outer surface, radiative cooling has become important in the post shock gas; on the denser end there has bee…
The Eskimo Nebula (NGC 2392) is a double-shell planetary nebula (PN) known for the exceptionally large expansion velocity of its inner shell, ~90 km/s, and the existence of a fast bipolar outflow with a line-of-sight expansion velocity approaching 200 km/s. We have obtained XMM-Newton observations of the Eskimo and detected diffuse X-ray emission within its inner shell. The X-ray spectra suggest thin plasma emission with a temperature of ~2x10^6 K and an X-ray luminosity of L_X = (2.6+/-1.0)x10^31 (d/1150 pc)^2 ergs/s, where d is the distance in parsecs. The diffuse X-ray emission shows notice…
The evolution of supernova remnants (SNRs) is studied, with particular attention to the effect of magnetic fields with axisymmetric two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations. The evolution of magnetic SNRs is the same as non-magnetic ones in the adiabatic Sedov stage. After a thin shell is formed, the shell is driven by the pressure of the hot interior gas (bubble). Evolution in the pressure-driven snow-plow phase is much affected by the magnetic field. The shell sweeping the magnetic field lines thickens owing to the magnetic pressure force. After $5\times 10^5{\rm yr}$ - $2\times 10^…
We report the detection of a hot companion of $η$ Carinae using high resolution spectra (905 - 1180 Å) obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (\fuse) satellite. Observations were obtained at two epochs of the 2024-day orbit: 2003 June during ingress to the 2003.5 X-ray eclipse and 2004 April several months after egress. These data show that essentially all the far-UV flux from \etacar shortward of \lya disappeared at least two days before the start of the X-ray eclipse (2003 June 29), implying that the hot companion, \etaB, was also eclipsed by the dense wind or extended atmo…
We present an analysis of the subdwarf O star Feige 67 with a fully metal-line blanketed NLTE model atmosphere based on high-resolution Far-UV (912-2000 A) and Near-UV (2000-3400 A) spectra from new ORFEUS II echelle observations and the IUE final archive. The Far-UV spectra are heavily blanketed by iron and nickel lines, preventing the detection of the stellar continuum and complicating the abundance analysis. Important points concerning the account for blanketing by millions of iron-group lines and for an accurate determination of iron and nickel abundances are discussed: The usage of all th…
NGC 4449 is an irregular galaxy with a moderately high star formation activity. The massive stars in NGC 4449 have given rise to many bright HII regions, superbubbles, supergiant shells, and "chimney-like" radial filaments. ROSAT X-ray observations of NGC 4449 have revealed four point-like sources and a wide-spread diffuse emission. The spectral properties of the diffuse component suggest that the emission originates from hot interstellar gas. We have compared deep ground-based H-alpha images with the X-ray images of NGC 4449 to determine the relationship between the hot (10^6 K) and the warm …
Deep Chandra observations (53 ks, ACIS-S3) of NGC 3077, a starburst dwarf galaxy in the M 81 triplet, resolve the X-ray emission from several supershells. The emission is brightest in the cavities defined by expanding shells detected previously in H alpha emission (Martin 1998). Thermal emission models fitted to the data imply temperatures ranging from ~1.3 to 4.9 x 10^(6) K and indicate that the strongest absorption is coincident with the densest clouds traced by CO emission. The fitted emission measures give pressures of P/k~10^(5-6) xi^(-0.5) f_(v)^(-0.5) K cm^(-3) (xi: metallicity of the h…
We present results from two {\em Chandra}/ACIS-I observations and one {\em XMM-Newton} observation of X-ray emission from the ISM and the inner radio lobes of the nearby radio galaxy Centaurus A. The ISM has an average radial surface brightness profile that is well described by a $β$-model profile with index $β$=0.40$\pm$0.04 and a temperature of $k_BT_{ISM}\sim$0.29 keV beyond 2 kpc from the nucleus. We find that diffuse X-ray emission is coincident with the outer half of the southwest radio lobe, and a bright X-ray enhancement is detected along the edge of the lobe. On the basis of energetic…
We show that interactions of fast particles with the boundary shell of the local hot bubble could make an important contribution to the 0.5-1 keV diffuse X-ray background observed with ROSAT. The bulk of these nonthermal X-rays are due to line emission from fast O ions of energies around 1 MeV/nucleon. This is the typical energy per particle in the ejecta of the supernova which is thought to have energized the bubble. We find that there is sufficient total energy in the ejecta to produce X-rays of the required intensity, subject to the details of the evolution of the fast particle population s…
We present results of observations at 47 and 95 microns from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory of several ``Vega-like'' stars. Spatial cuts and aperture photometry are presented for Beta Pictoris, Fomalhaut, and HD 135344, 139614, 142527, and 169142, four stars that had been suggested to possibly represent more distant examples of the Vega phenomenon by Walker and Wolstencroft. We have modelled the dust around beta Pic and Fomalhaut with a spatially and optically thin disk to determine the constraints our new observations place on the properites of the dust disks that are required to explain the…
We present far-IR ISO observations of three early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster. The data were recorded using the ISOPHOT instrument in both the P32 oversampled maps and the P39/37 sparse maps. The maps reach the limiting sensitivity of the ISOPHOT instrument at 60, 90, and 180$μ$m. Two of the most prominent elliptical galaxies in Virgo -- NGC 4472 and NGC 4649 -- clearly show no emission at far-IR wavelengths at a level of few tens of mJy, but NGC 4636 is detected at all three wavelengths. We have computed the far-IR emission from dust for NGC4472 and NGC4636 under the assumption that du…
We present XMM-Newton X-ray observations of two shell galaxies, NGC 7070A and ESO 2400100, and far UV observations obtained with the Optical Monitor for these and for an additional shell galaxy, NGC 474, for which we also have near and far UV data from GALEX. We aim at gaining insight on the overall evolution traced by their star formation history and by their hot gas content. The X-ray and the far UV data are used to derive their X-ray spatial and spectral characteristics and their UV luminosity profiles. We use models developed ad hoc to investigate the age of the last episode of star format…
We present a synthetic spectral analysis of IUE archival and FUSE FUV spectra of the peculiar dwarf nova WW Ceti. During the quiescence of WW Ceti, a white dwarf with Twd=26,000K can account for the FUV flux and yields the proper distance. However, the best agreement with the observations is provided by a two-temperature white dwarf model with a cooler white dwarf at Twd=25,000K providing 75% of the FUV flux and a hotter region (accretion belt or optically thick disk ring) with T=40,000K contributing 25% of the flux for the proper distance. We find from the FUSE spectrum that the white dwarf i…
We examine the evolution of inhomogeneities (fragments) of supernova ejecta in compact supernova remnants by means of hydrodynamical modeling and simplified analytical calculations. Under the influence of intense post-shock cooling the fragments become strongly compressed as they traverse the hot shocked region between the reverse and outer shocks of the remnant. We find that the most likely outcome of the interaction of fragments with the reverse shock and the hot shocked region is their disruption resulting in generation of secondary fragments. Secondary fragments arriving at the thin and de…
The interior of a planetary nebula (PN) is expected to be filled with shocked fast wind from the central star. This hot gas plays the most important role in the dynamical evolution of the PN; however, its physical conditions are not well-known because useful X-ray and far-UV observations were not available until the advent of Chandra, XMM-Newton, and FUSE. This paper reviews X-ray observations of the hot gas in PN interiors and far-UV observations of the interfaces between the hot gas and the dense nebular shells.
Diffuse X-ray emission from the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) is studied by using all the archival data of pointed ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) observations. For this purpose, contributions from the point and point-like sources in the ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) and PSPC source catalogues are eliminated and periods of high solar activity are excluded. The spectral analysis yielded characteristic temperatures of 10^6 - 10^7 K for the hot thin plasma of the ISM which extends over the whole Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The total unabs…
We present two sequences of VLBI images of SN1993J in M81, with 24 images at 8.4 GHz and 19 images at 5.0 GHz, These sequences, from 50 d to ~9 yr after shock breakout, show the evolution of the expanding radio shell of an exploded star in detail. The images are all phase-referenced to the stable reference point of the core of M81, allowing us to display them relative to the supernova explosion center. At 50 d, SN1993J is almost unresolved with a radius of 520 AU. The shell structure becomes discernible at 175 d. The brightness of the ridge of the projected shell is not uniform, but rather var…
The time variation in the water-vapour bands in oxygen-rich Mira variables has been investigated using multi-epoch ISO/SWS spectra of four Mira variables in the 2.5-4.0 micron region. All four stars show H2O bands in absorption around minimum in the visual light curve. At maximum, H2O emission features appear in the ~3.5-4.0 micronm region, while the features at shorter wavelengths remain in absorption. These H2O bands in the 2.5-4.0 micron region originate from the extended atmosphere. The analysis has been carried out with a disk shape, slab geometry model. The observed H2O bands are reprodu…
Using new XMM and Chandra observations we present an analysis of the temperature structure of the hot gas within a radius of 100 kpc of the bright nearby galaxy group NGC 5044. A spectral deprojection analysis of data extracted from circular annuli reveals that a two-temperature model (2T) of the hot gas is favored over single-phase or cooling flow (M_dot = 4.5 +/- 0.2 M_{sun}/yr) models within the central ~30 kpc. Alternatively, the data can be fit equally well if the temperature within each spherical shell varies continuously from ~T_h to T_c ~ T_h/2, but no lower. The high spatial resolutio…
We report spectroscopic redshifts for 18 microJy-radio galaxies at mean redshift of z=2.2 that are faint at both submmillimeter (submm) and optical wavelengths. While the radio fluxes of these galaxies could indicate far-infrared (far-IR) luminosities comparable to high-redshift submillimeter-selected galaxies (>10^12 Lsun), none are detected in the submm. We propose that this new population of galaxies represents an extension of the high-redshift submm galaxy population, but with hotter characteristic dust temperatures that shift the peak of their far-IR emission to shorter wavelengths, reduc…
Line ratio of $3d-2p$ transition lines in boron-like spectra of Si X, S XII, Ar XIV and Fe XXII has been investigated. Collisional-radiative model calculations reveal that the line ratio is sensitive to the electron density in ranges of $n_{\rm e}=4.0\times10^7-3.0\times10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$, $4.0\times10^8-3.0\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$, $3.0\times10^9-4.0\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$ and $2.0\times10^{12}-3.0\times10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$, respectively. This complements the K-shell diagnostics of helium-like ions. By comparison between the prediction and the measured values, effective electron densities in t…
An equation of state for 2-flavor quark matter (QM) with diquark condensation under the conditions for compact stars -$β$-equilibrium, charge and color neutrality- is presented. Trapped antineutrinos prevent the formation of the diquark condensate at moderate densities above a critical value of the antineutrino chemical potential $μ_{\bar ν_e}^c$. The following consequences are presented: 1) The star develops a 2-phase structure ($μ_{\bar ν_e}\geq μ_{\bar ν_e}^c$): a color superconducting QM core and a normal QM shell. 2)During the cooling, when the temperature is small enough ($T<1$ MeV) the …
As more cooling flow clusters of galaxies with central radio sources are observed with the Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray Observatories, more examples of "bubbles" (low-emission regions in the X-ray coincident with radio emission) are being found. These bubbles are surrounded by bright shells of X-ray emission, and no evidence of current strong shocks has yet been found. Using an analytic approach and some simplifying assumptions, we derive expressions relating the size and location of a bubble, as well as the density contrast between the bubble and the ambient medium, with the shock history of …
We have analyzed the far UV-spectrum of the globular cluster M79. We show that the nearly Gaussian mass distribution of zero-age horizontal-branch stars, as derived by Dixon et al.(1996), is able to reproduce the far-UV Hopkins Utraviolet Telescope (HUT) spectrum, if there is a luminous UV-bright star of about an effective temperature of 9,500 K within the HUT entrance slit, or, more likely, if the horizontal branch morphology becomes considerably redder in the core of M79, as observed in some other centrally condensed globular clusters. Agreement between the synthetic and observed far-UV spec…
Shell galaxies are widely considered the debris of recent accretion/merging episodes. Their high frequency in low density environment suggests that such episodes could be among the driver of the early-type galaxy secular evolution. We present far and near UV (FUV and NUV respectively hereafter) GALEX photometric properties of a sample of shell galaxies.
The current understanding of mechanical feedback is reviewed by evaluating the standard, adiabatic model for shell formation and evolution. This model is relevant to phenomena ranging from individual stellar-wind bubbles to galactic superwinds, forming the basis for our understanding of the multiphase ISM, IGM, and galactic evolutionary processes. Although significant discrepancies between the model and observation have been identified, to date there are none that require a fundamental revision. A variety of evidence, ranging over three orders of magnitude in spatial scale, is broadly consiste…
One of the keys to interpreting the character and evolution of interstellar matter in the galaxy is understanding the distribution of the low density hot (10^5 K -10^6 K) phase of the interstellar medium (ISM). This phase is much more difficult to observe than the cooler high density components of the ISM because of its low density and lack of easily observable tracers. Because gas of this temperature emits mainly in the far ultraviolet (912 angstrom - 1800 angstroms) and extreme ultraviolet (80 angstrom - 912 angstrom), and (for gas hotter than 10^6 K) X-rays, observations in these bands can …
The X-ray bright z=0.116 quasar PKS 2155-304 is frequently observed as a Chandra calibration source, with a total of 483 ksec of Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) exposure time accumulated through May 2006. Highly-ionized metal absorption lines, including numerous lines at z=0 and a putative OVIII K-alpha line at z=0.055, have been reported in past Chandra studies of this source. Using all available Chandra LETG spectra and analysis techniques developed for such z=0 X-ray absorption along other sightlines, we revisit these previous detections. We detect 4 absorption lines at >3σsignifican…
The proper motion of massive stars could cause them to explode far from the geometric centers of their wind-driven bubbles and thereby could affect the symmetry of the resulting diffuse supernova remnants. We use this fact to explain the origin of SNRs consisting of two partially overlapping shells (e.g. Cygnus Loop, 3C 400.2, etc.).
The properties of the Galactic HI shell GSH 138-01-94 are derived from data of the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey. The basic parameters of GSH 138-01-94 were determined by fitting the expansion of a thin shell to the expansion velocity field on the sky. The kinematic distance is 16.6 kpc for v_LSR=-94.2 $\pm$ 0.5 km/s. The radius is 180 $\pm$ 10 pc, the expansion velocity v_exp = 11.8 $\pm$ 0.9 km/s, and the mass 2 * 10^5 M_sun. No radio continuum counterpart of the shell was detected at 21 cm or at 74 cm. Absorption of a background continuum source constrains the spin temperature of \HI in th…
We study the consequences of antineutrino trapping in hot quark matter for quark star configurations with possible diquark condensation. Due to the conditions of charge neutrality and beta-equilibrium the flavor asymmetry increases with the number density of trapped antineutrinos such that above a critical value of the antineutrino chemical potential of 30 MeV diquark condensation is inhibited. When the quark star cools a two-phase structure occurs: a superconducting quark matter core surrounded by a shell of normal quark matter. Below the critical temperature of about 1 MeV, the antineutrino …
