We examine the effect of adding pion exchange between quarks and pion self-energy corrections to the Los Alamos Relativistic Quark model with a short distance cutoff of the Bethe form. The contributions to the nucleon and the Delta-baryon are small. We conclude that the model is stable under this change in the sense that significant changes to the model parameters are not required.
Strong pionic decays of baryons are studied in a non-relativistic quark model framework via a convergent (p/E) expansion of the transition operator. Results are compared to the ones obtained within a more conventional (p/m) expansion.
Using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, we have calculated all the diagrams up to two-loop order which contribute to the S-wave pion self-energy in symmetric nuclear matter. Some subtleties related to the definition of pion fields are discussed. The in-medium pion mass is turned out to be increased by only (5 - 6) per cents in normal nuclear matter density, without any off-shell ambiguity.
Phi meson production in pion-baryon and baryon-baryon interactions near the production threshold is studied in a boson-exchange model. Parameters in this model are either taken from the Bonn model for the nucleon-nucleon potential or determined from the measured phi meson decay width and the experimental data for the reactions $π^-p\arr ϕn$ and $pp\arr ppϕ$. The isospin-averaged cross sections for the reactions $πN\arr ϕN$, $πΔ\arr ϕN$, $NN\arr NNϕ$, which are needed in transport models to study phi meson production in heavy-ion collisions at subthreshold energies, have been evaluated. For the…
A non-perturbative s-wave renormalization of the pion in a hot and baryon rich medium is presented. This approach proceeds via a mapping of the canonical pion into the axial Noether's charge. The mapping was made dynamical in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov random phase approximation (HFB-RPA). It is shown that this approach, while order mixing, is still symmetry conserving both in the baryon free and baryon rich sectors, at zero as well as finite temperature. The systematic character of this approach is emphasized and it is particularly argued that it may constitute an interesting alternative for…
In response to Kim's comment (nucl-th/9903040) on the sum rules for pion-baryon coupling constants obtained in hep-ph/9512259 and hep-ph/9606471, we point out that our treatment of the continuum is consistent with duality and with the fact that the correlator in the presence of an external meson or field should be represented by a double dispersion relation.
Off-shell aspects of the one-pion-exchange potential and their relationship to different forms of the nonstatic (subleading-order) chiral two-pion-exchange nucleon-nucleon potential are discussed. Various types of off-shell behavior are categorized and numerous examples are given. Recently derived potentials based on chiral approaches are supplemented by a rather general form of the two-pion-exchange potential derived using old-fashioned methods. The latter is closely related to a general form of one-pion-exchange relativistic corrections and nonstatic two-pion-exchange three-nucleon forces de…
Proton-antiproton annihilation into two pions and three pions is studied in a baryon-exchange model. Annihilation diagrams involving nucleon as well as Delta-resonance exchanges are included consistently in the two- and three-pion channels. Effects from the initial-state interaction are fully taken into account. A comparison of the influence of the Delta exchange on the considered annihilation channels is made and reveals that its importance for three-pion annihilation is strongly reduced as compared to two-pion annihilation. It is found that annihilation into three uncorrelated pions can yiel…
A microscopic model for the $N\bar N\toππ$ process is presented in the meson exchange framework, which in the pseudophysical region agrees with available quasiempirical information. The scalar ($σ$) and vector ($ρ$) piece of correlated two--pion exchange in the pion--nucleon interaction is then derived via dispersion integrals over the unitarity cut. Inherent ambiguities in the method and implications for the description of pion--nucleon scattering data are discussed.
Contributions of perturbative pions around a non-trivial fixed point are studied by utilizing di-baryon fields. We calculate ${}^1S_0$ and ${}^3S_1$ phase shifts for the $np$ scattering at low energies up to one-pion-exchange contributions. We also calculate effective range parameters, $v_2$, $v_3$ and $v_4$ in the higher order of the effective range expansion, and obtain corrections of the effective range to the expressions previously reported by Cohen and Hansen. After the scattering length and the effective range are renormalized, we study the role of renormailzation scale parameter $μ$ and…
Kaon production cross sections in nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-delta and delta-delta interactions are studied in a boson exchange model. For the latter two interactions, the exchanged pion can be on-mass shell, only contributions due to a virtual pion are included via the Peierls method by taking into account the finite delta width. With these cross sections and also those for pion-baryon interactions, subthreshold kaon production from heavy ion collisions is studied in the relativistic transport model.
In this letter we study the high energy behavior of the forward differential cross section for the $^{18}O(π^+,π^-)^{18}Ne$ double charge exchange reaction. We have evaluated the sequential and the meson exchange current mechanisms. The meson exchange current contribution shows a very weak energy dependence and becomes relevant at incident pion kinetic energies above 600 MeV.
We study a hybrid chiral model for the nucleon based on the linear sigma model with explicit quarks. We solve the model using a Fock-space configuration consisting of three quarks plus three quarks and a pion as the ground state ansatz in place of the ``hedgehog'' ansatz. We minimize the expectation value of the chiral hamiltonian in this ground state configuration and solve the resulting equations for nucleon quantum numbers. We calculate the canonical set of nucleon observables and compare with previous work.
We calculate the $T$-matrices of elastic pion-nucleon ($πN$) scattering up to fourth order in SU(3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The pertinent low-energy constants are determined by fitting to $πN$ phase shifts below 200 MeV pion laboratory momentum in the physical region. The scattering lengths and scattering volumes are extracted from the chiral amplitudes, and turn out to be in good agreement with those of other approaches and the available experimental values. We also discuss the subthreshold parameters and the related issues. On the basis of the various phase shifts, the thres…
Parity nonconserving two-pion exchange in elastic pp scattering is investigated in the presence of phenomenological strong distortions in various models. Parity violation is included in the nucleon-pion vertex considering NN and N Delta(1232) intermediate states in box and crossed box diagrams. Using the derived parity nonconserving two-pion exchange potential we calculate the longitudinal analyzing power A_L in elastic $pp$ scattering. The predicted effect is of the same order as vector meson exchanges.
We have extended and applied a general QCD parameterization method to the emission of pions from baryons. We use it to calculate the strength and sign of the coupling of pions to the octet and decuplet of baryons. Certain relations between octet and decuplet couplings are pointed out.
In this paper, which is the second part in a series of two, we construct tree level baryon exchange and resonance amplitudes for $πN$ / $MB$-scattering in the framework of the Kadyshevsky formalism. We use this formalism to formally implement absolute pair suppression, where we make use of the method of Takahashi and Umezawa. The resulting amplitudes are Lorentz invariant and causal. We continue studying the frame dependence of the Kadyshevsky integral equation using the method of Gross and Jackiw. The invariant amplitudes, including those for meson exchange, are linked to the phase-shifts usi…
We study the pp \to ppπ^0 reaction near threshold based on heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. We show that the two-pion-exchange diagrams give much larger contribution than the one-pion-exchange diagram which is of lower chiral order in Weinberg's counting scheme. We also discuss the relation of our results to the momentum counting scheme.
Photocouplings for the nucleon resonances most relevant to total photoabsorption are calculated in a constituent quark model including gluon and pion exchange. The sensitivity of the results to the different ingredients of the model is discussed.
We show how to renormalize chiral two pion exchange perturbatively if one pion exchange has already been fully iterated at leading order. This particular choice corresponds to the implementation of the counting proposal of Nogga, Timmermans and van Kolck at subleading orders. We illustrate why the perturbative treatment of the two pion exchange contributions is mandatory in order to avoid certain inconsistencies in Weinberg's counting. In addition, renormalizability implies modifications of the power counting which we explore for the particular case of the singlet channel.
The chiral two-pion exchange component of the long-range pp interaction is studied in an energy-dependent partial-wave analysis. We demonstrate its presence and importance, and determine the chiral parameters c_i (i=1,3,4). The values agree well with those obtained from pion-nucleon amplitudes.
We study the perturbative renormalizability of chiral two pion exchange in nucleon-nucleon scattering for p- and d-waves within the effective field theory approach. The one pion exchange potential is fully iterated at the leading order in the expansion, a choice generating a consistent and well-defined power counting that we explore in detail. The results show that perturbative chiral two pion exchange reproduces the data up to a center-of-mass momentum of k_cm ~300 MeV at NNLO and that the effective field theory expansion convergences up to k_cm ~ 350 MeV.
The one-pion exchange current corrections to isoscalar and isovector magnetic moments of double-closed shell nuclei plus and minus one nucleon with $A=15,17,39$ and 41 have been studied in the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory and compared with previous relativistic and non-relativistic results. It has been found that the one-pion exchange current gives a negligible contribution to the isoscalar magnetic moments but a significant correction to the isovector ones. However, the one-pion exchange current doesn't improve the description of nuclear isovector magnetic moments for the concerned nu…
A cascade model has been developed to study pion induced multichannel reactions (quasielastic, SCX, DCX, absorption and pion production) at pion energies above 0.5 GeV. Special attention has been paid to pion double charge exchange. Pion production is a determinant feature in the high energy pion nucleus reactions, and the DCX signal not related to pion production is sizeable only at forward angles and for high energy outgoing pions. The contribution to DCX of the conventional mechanism, with two quasielastic SCX steps decreases very fast as a function of the energy and reaches very low values…
Dynamics of the nuclear fragmentations and the charge exchange reactions in pion-nucleus collisions near the $Δ$(1232) resonance energies has been investigated within the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics (LQMD) transport model. An isospin, momentum and density-dependent pion-nucleon potential is implemented in the model, which influences the pion dynamics, in particular the kinetic energy spectra, but weakly impacts the fragmentation mechanism. The absorption process in pion-nucleon collisions to form the $Δ$(1232) resonance dominates the heating mechanism of target nucleus. The excitation e…
The elastic backward proton-deuteron scattering is analyzed within a covariant approach based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation with realistic meson-exchange interaction. Contributions of the one-nucleon and one-pion exchange mechanisms to the cross section and polarization observables are investigated in explicit form. Results of numerical calculations for the cross section, tensor analyzing power and spin transfers are presented. The one-pion exchange contribution is essential for describing the spin averaged cross section, while in polarization observables it is found to be less important.
We derive the leading two-pion exchange contributions to the two-nucleon electromagnetic current operator in the framework of chiral effective field theory using the method of unitary transformation. Explicit results for the current and charge densities are given in momentum and coordinate space.
The leading contribution to the three-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon potential is calculated in the framework of chiral symmetry. It has pseudoscalar and axial components and is dominated by the former, which has a range of about 1.5 fm and tends to enhance the OPEP. The strength of this force does not depend on the pion mass and hence it survives in the chiral limit.
The implications of the pion (meson) degrees of freedom for baryon properties, taken at the constituent quark and baryon levels are compared. It is shown that there is a dramatic qualitative difference between two approaches.
By looking at the complex plane of the pion-mass squared we establish a dispersion relation which the static quantities, such as baryon masses, magnetic moments, polarizabilities, should obey. This dispersion relation yields insight into the differences between the heavy-baryon and relativistic calculations in the baryon sector of chiral perturbation theory.
A dynamical model for correlated two-pion and two-kaon exchange in the baryon- baryon interaction is presented, both in the scalar-isoscalar ($σ$) and the vector-isovector ($ρ$) channel. The correlations between the two pseudoscalar mesons are taken into account by means of $ππ- K\bar K$ amplitudes derived from a meson-exchange model, which is in line with the empirical $ππ$ data. It is found that correlated $K\bar K$ exchange plays an important role in the $σ$-channel for baryon-baryon states with non- vanishing strangeness. The strength of correlated $ππ$ plus $K\bar K$ exchange in the $σ$-c…
We carefully calculate the nucleon-nucleon interaction due to two pion exchange processes by properly evaluating the corresponding Feynman diagrams. In the estimation, we have made no approximation, and instead, we carry out the numerical integrations of three Feynman parameters. It is found that the two pion exchange potential gives rise to the attractive force which corresponds to the effective scalar meson with its mass of $m_s\simeq 4.7 m_π$ and its strength of ${g_s^2\over 4π}\simeq 1.45 $. There is a strong isospin dependence of $(\bmτ_1\cdot \bmτ_2)^2 $ which cannot be simulated by the …
The doubly differential cross sections for the $^4$He$(π^+,π^-) 4p$ reaction were calculated using both a two-nucleon sequential single charge exchange model and an intranuclear cascade code. Final state interactions between the two final protons which were the initial neutrons were included in both methods. At incident pion energies of 240 and 270 MeV the low-energy peak observed experimentally in the energy spectrum of the final pions can be understood only if the contribution of pion production is included. The calculated cross sections are compared with data.
The structure of the weak axial pion exchange current is discussed in various models. It is shown how the interplay of the chiral invariance and the double counting problem restricts uniquely the form of the pion potential term, in the case when the nuclear dynamics is described by the Schroedinger equation with the static nucleon-nucleon potential.
We derive the leading one-loop contribution to the one-pion exchange and short-range two-nucleon electromagnetic current operator in the framework of chiral effective field theory. The derivation is carried out using the method of unitary transformation. Explicit results for the current and charge densities are given in momentum and coordinate space.
The inclusive pion double charge exchange process on nuclei is considered in the framework of the Gribov-Glauber approach. It is shown that inelastic rescatterings related to production of two (and more) pions in the intermediate state give an important contribution to the process of double charge exchange at kinetic energies above ~ 0.5 GeV. This mechanism dominates at energies greater or about 1 GeV and allows to explain the weak energy dependence of the double charge exchange cross section observed experimentally.
A consistent analysis of relativistic pionic correlations and meson-exchange currents for electroweak quasielastic electron scattering from nuclei is carried out. Fully-relativistic one-pion-exchange electromagnetic operators are developed for use in one-particle emission electronuclear reactions within the context of the relativistic Fermi gas model. Then the exchange and pionic correlation currents are set up fully respecting the gauge invariance of the theory. Emphasis is placed on the self-energy current which, being infinite, needs to be renormalized. This is achieved starting in the Hart…
We study the perturbative renormalizability of chiral two pion exchange for the singlet and triplet channels within effective field theory, provided that the one pion exchange piece of the interaction has been fully iterated. We determine the number of counterterms/subtractions needed in order to obtain finite results when the cut-off is removed, resulting in three counterterms for the singlet channel and six for the triplet. The results show that chiral two pion exchange can be treated perturbatively up to a center-of-mass momentum of k ~ 200-300 MeV in the singlet channel and k ~ 300-400 in …
Our previous study of the near-threshold pp\to ppπ^0 reaction based on a hybrid nuclear effective field theory is further elaborated by examining the momentum dependence of the relevant transition operators. We show that the two-pion exchange diagrams give much larger contributions than the one-pion exchange diagram, even though the former is of higher order in the Weinberg counting scheme. The relation between our results and an alternative counting scheme, the momentum counting scheme, is also discussed.
We outline the progress made in the past five years by the São Paulo group in the development of a two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon potential within a Lorentz-invariant framework of (baryon) chiral perturbation theory.
The chiral two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon interaction has nowadays a rather firm conceptual basis, but depends on low-energy constants, which may be extracted from fits to data. In order to facilitate this kind of application, we present here a parametrized version of our relativistic expansion of this component of the force to $O(q^4)$, performed recently.
We consider the relationship between P-wave pi-N scattering and the strength of the P-wave two-pion-exchange three-nucleon interaction (TPE3NI). We explain why effective theories that do not contain the delta resonance as an explicit degree of freedom tend to overestimate the strength of the TPE3NI. The overestimation can be remedied by higher-order terms in these ``delta-less'' theories, but such terms are not yet included in state-of-the-art chiral EFT calculations of the nuclear force. This suggests that these calculations can only predict the strength of the TPE3NI to an accuracy of +/-25%…
The pion decay constants of the lowest orbitally excited states of the nucleon and the $Δ(1232)$ along with the corresponding axial transition form factors are calculated with Poincaré covariant constituent-quark models with instant, point and front forms of relativistic kinematics. The model wave functions are chosen such that the calculated electromagnetic and axial form factors of the nucleon represent the empirical values in all three forms of kinematics, when calculated with single-constituent currents. The pion decay widths calculated with the three forms of kinematics are smaller than t…
We discuss the two-pion exchange potential which emerges from a box diagram with one nucleon (the spectator) restricted to its mass shell, and the other nucleon line replaced by a subtracted, covariant $πN$ scattering amplitude which includes $Δ$, Roper, and $D_{13}$ isobars, as well as contact terms and off-shell (non-pole) dressed nucleon terms. The $πN$ amplitude satisfies chiral symmetry constraints and fits $πN$ data below $\sim$ 700 MeV pion energy. We find that this TPE potential can be well approximated by the exchange of an effective sigma and delta meson, with parameters close to the…
Short range meson-exchange mechanisms such as $ρ\toωπ^0$ contribute significantly to the amplitude for $pp\rightarrow ppπ^0$ near threshold in addition to pion rescattering. The uncertainty of the latter contribution, which depends on poorly determined parameters, is estimated. Allowing for this uncertainty and taking the short range meson-exchange contributions into account makes it possible to reproduce the measured cross section.
Charge-independence breaking due to the pion-mass difference in the (chiral) two-pion-exchange nucleon-nucleon force is investigated. A general argument based on symmetries is presented that relates the charge-symmetric part of that force to the proton-proton case. The static potential linear in that mass difference is worked out as an explicit example by means of Feynman diagrams, and this confirms the general argument.
We investigate quantum corrections to a classical intranuclear cascade simulation of pion single charge exchange on the deuteron. In order to separate various effects the orders of scattering need to be distinguished and, to that end, we develop signals for each order of scattering corresponding to quasi-free conditions. Quantum corrections are evaluated for double scattering and are found to be large. Global agreement with the data is good.
The renormalization, finiteness and off-shellness of short distance power like singular interactions is discussed. We show analytically that the renormalizability of the off-shell scattering amplitude relies completely on the corresponding on-shell amplitude without proliferation of new counterterms. We illustrate the result by complementary calculations both in coordinate as well as in momentum space in the simplest 1S0 channel for chiral np interactions including Two Pion Exchange.
The nucleon-nucleon interaction arising from the exchange of three pions and the excitation of $Δ(1232)$-isobars in intermediate states is studied. Approximating the $Δ$-propagator by the inverse $Δ$N mass-splitting, analytical expressions are derived for the spectral-functions of the isoscalar and isovector central, spin-spin and tensor NN-potentials in momentum-space. A trans- lation of the spectral-functions into coordinate-space potentials reveals that the main effect of these specific exchange and excitation mechanisms is a repulsive isoscalar central NN-potential.
A meson exchange model of the $ππ$ interaction which fits free $ππ$ scattering data is used to calculate the interactions of pions in nuclear matter as a function of nuclear density. Polarization of the nuclear medium by the pions results in a marked increase in the s-wave $ππ$ attraction at low energy. The influence of this effect on the nucleon-nucleon interaction is a corresponding increase with density of the $NN$ central potential due to the exchange of two correlated pions, resulting in an $NN$ interaction which fails to saturate. A possible mechanism for restoring the theoretical stabil…
The renormalization of the NN interaction with the Chiral Two Pion Exchange Potential computed using relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory is considered. The short distance singularity reduces the number of counter-terms to about a half as those in the heavy-baryon expansion. Phase shifts and deuteron properties are evaluated and a general overall agreement is observed.
Owing to the Kubo relation, the shear viscosities of pionic and nucleonic components have been evaluated from their corresponding retarded correlators of viscous stress tensor in the static limit, which become non-divergent only for the non-zero thermal widths of the constituent particles. In the real-time thermal field theory, the pion and nucleon thermal widths have respectively been obtained from the pion self-energy for different meson, baryon loops and the nucleon self-energy for different pion-baryon loops. We have found a non-monotonic momentum distributions of pion and nucleon thermal …
We consider the parity-violating two-pion-exchange potential obtained from the covariant formalism in the past and the state-of-the-art effective field theory approach. We discuss the behavior of the potential in coordinate space and its application to the parity-violating asymmetry in $\vec{n} p \to d γ$ at threshold.
In this work we explore the effect of pion cloud contributions to the mass of the nucleon and the delta baryon. To this end we solve a coupled system of Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark propagator, a Bethe-Salpeter equation for the pion and a three-body Faddeev equation for the baryons. In the quark-gluon interaction we explicitly resolve the term responsible for the back-coupling of the pion onto the quark, representing rainbow-ladder like pion cloud effects in bound states. We study the dependence of the resulting baryon masses on the current quark mass and discuss the internal struct…
We extend the renormalization of the NN interaction with Chiral Two Pion Exchange Potential to the calculation of non-central partial wave phase shifts with total angular momentum j<=5 . The short distance singularity structure of the potential as well as the requirement of orthogonality conditions on the wave functions determines exactly the number of undetermined parameters after renormalization.
We extend our previous analysis of the unitarized pion-nucleon scattering amplitude including up to fourth order terms in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. We pay special attention to the stability of the generated Delta(1232 resonance, the convergence problems and the power counting of the chiral parameters.
Using SU(3) symmetry to constrain the pion BB' couplings, assuming SU(3) breaking comes only from one-loop pion cloud contributions, and using the the covariant spectator theory to describe the photon coupling to the quark core, we show how the experimental masses and magnetic moments of the baryon octet can be used to set a model independent constraint on the strength of the pion cloud contributions to the octet, and hence the nucleon, form factors at Q2=0.
In this comment, we propose possible errors in constructing the continuum contribution in the sum rule studied by M. C. Birse and B. Krippa, Phys. Rev. C. {\bf 54} (1996) 3240.
