The dynamic resistance of a sphere with a general inhomogeneous slip boundary condition is analysed in Newtonian unbounded uniform flow at low Reynolds number. The boundary condition is treated as a perturbation to a homogeneous sphere, assuming that the slip length magnitude b is much smaller than the sphere radius a. To first order, the effect of inhomogeneous slip is the same as that of a radial deformity of magnitude b. Full resistance tensors are presented and the dynamics of a hemispherical inhomogeneous sphere, such as a Janus particle, are explicitly calculated.
The motion and deformation of a droplet suspended in an unbounded fluid with an arbitrary, but Stokesian, imposed flow is investigated when there is a slip at the interface between the two liquids. The boundary condition at the interface is accounted by means of a simple Navier slip condition. Expressions are derived considering the effect of slip on the velocity and the shape deformation of the droplet for any arbitrary imposed flow field, and results are presented for the specific cases of shear flow and Poiseuille flow with the results of Hetsroni and Haber (J. Fluid Mech., 1970, vol. 41(04…
Stochastic roughness is widespread feature of natural surfaces and is an inherent by-product of most fabrication techniques. In view of rapid development of microfluidics, the important question is how this inevitable evil affects the low-Reynolds flows which are common for micro-devices. Moreover, one could potentially turn the flaw into a virtue and control the flow properties by means of specially "tuned" random roughness. In this paper we investigate theoretically the statistics of fluctuations in fluid velocity produced by the waviness irregularities at the surface of a no-slip wall. Part…
We propose a numerical approach to regularize the contact line singularity appearing in the computation of viscous capillary-gravity waves with moving contact line in cylindrical containers. The linearized Navier-Stokes equations are complemented by a macroscopic Navier-like slip condition on the container side wall, with a depth-varying slip-length bridging a free-slip condition at the contact line to a no-slip condition further away from the meniscus. In accordance with suggestions from the literature, this characteristic penetration depth is chosen as the typical Stokes layer thickness pert…

We study the forces and torques experienced by pill-shaped Janus particles of different aspect ratios where half of the surface obeys the no-slip boundary condition and the other half obeys the Navier slip condition of varying slip lengths. Using a recently developed boundary integral formulation whereby the traditional singular behaviour of this approach is removed analytically, we quantify the strength of the forces and torques experienced by such particles in a uniform flow field in the Stokes regime. Depending on the aspect ratio and the slip length, the force transverse to the flow direct…
Boundary conditions at a liquid-solid interface are crucial to dynamics of a liquid film coated on a fibre. Here a theoretical framework based on axisymmetric Stokes equations is developed to explore the influence of liquid-solid slip on the Rayleigh-Plateau instability of a cylindrical film on a fibre. The new model not only shows that the slip-enhanced growth rate of perturbations is overestimated by the classical lubrication model, but also indicates a slip-dependent dominant wavelength, instead of a constant value obtained by the lubrication method, which leads to larger drops formed on a …
Using numerical simulations of the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations with swirl on a no-slip flat boundary, Hsu-Notsu-Yoneda [J. Fluid Mech. 2016] observed the creation of a high-vorticity region on the boundary near the axis of symmetry. In this paper, using a differential geometric approach, we prove that such flows indeed have a destabilizing effect, which is formulated in terms of a lower bound on the $L^\infty$-norm of derivatives of the velocity field on the boundary.
Motivated by experimental evidence of violations of the no-slip boundary condition for liquid flow in micron-scale geometries, we propose a simple, complementary experimental technique that has certain advantages over previous studies. Instead of relying on externally-induced flow or probe motion, we suggest that colloidal diffusivity near solid surfaces contains signatures of the degree of fluid slip exhibited on those surfaces. To investigate, we calculate the image system for point forces (Stokeslets) oriented perpendicular and parallel to a surface with a finite slip length, analogous to B…
In a recent paper by Lasseux, Valdés-Parada and Porter (J.~Fluid~Mech. \textbf{805} (2016) 118-146), it is found that the apparent gas permeability of the porous media is a nonlinear function of the Knudsen number. However, this result is highly questionable, because the adopted Navier-Stokes equations and the first-order velocity-slip boundary condition are first-order (in terms of the Knudsen number) approximations of the Boltzmann equation and the kinetic boundary condition for rarefied gas flows. Our numerical simulations based on the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic equation and regularized …
It is shown how the variable density model (VDM) that governs the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) for the miscible mixing of two incompressible fluids can be transformed into a diffusive version of the inhomogeneous, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations forced by gradients of the composition density $ρ$ of the mixing layer. This demonstrates how buoyancy-driven flows drive and enhance Navier-Stokes turbulence. The role of the potential vorticity $q = ω\cdot\nablaρ$ is also discussed.
The basic concepts and equations of classical fluid mechanics are presented in the form necessary for the formulation of Newtonian cosmology and for derivation and analysis of a system of the averaged Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations. A special attention is paid to the analytic formulation of the definitions and equations of moving fluids and to their physical content.

The basic concepts and equations of Newtonian Cosmology are presented in the form necessary for the derivation and analysis of the averaged Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations. A particular attention is paid to the physical and cosmological hypotheses about the structure of Newtonian universes. The system of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations governing the cosmological dynamics of Newtonian universes is presented and discussed. A reformulation of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations in terms of the fluid kinematic quantities is given and the structure of this system of equations is analyzed.
We investigate theoretically on the basis of the steady Stokes equations for a viscous incompressible fluid the flow induced by a Stokeslet located on the centre axis of two coaxially positioned rigid disks. The Stokeslet is directed along the centre axis. No-slip boundary conditions are assumed to hold at the surfaces of the disks. We perform the calculation of the associated Green's function in large parts analytically, reducing the spatial evaluation of the flow field to one-dimensional integrations amenable to numerical treatment. To this end, we formulate the solution of the hydrodynamic …
