We report on interferometric imaging of the CO J=1--0 and J=3--2 line emission from the controversial QSO/galaxy pair HE 0450--2958. {\it The detected CO J=1--0 line emission is found associated with the disturbed companion galaxy not the luminous QSO,} and implies $\rm M_{gal}(H_2)\sim (1-2)\times 10^{10} M_{\odot}$, which is $\ga 30% $ of the dynamical mass in its CO-luminous region. Fueled by this large gas reservoir this galaxy is the site of an intense starburst with $\rm SFR\sim 370 M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$, placing it firmly on the upper gas-rich/star-forming end of Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs, $\rm L_{IR}>10^{12} L_{\odot}$). This makes HE 0450--2958 the first case of extreme starburst and powerful QSO activity, intimately linked (triggered by a strong interaction) but not coincident. The lack of CO emission towards the QSO itself renews the controversy regarding its host galaxy by making a gas-rich spiral (the typical host of Narrow Line Seyfert~1 AGNs) less likely. Finally, given that HE 0450--2958 and similar IR-warm QSOs are considered typical ULIRG$\to $(optically bright QSO) transition candidates, our results raise the possibility that some may simply be {\it gas-rich/gas-poor (e.g. spiral/elliptical) galaxy interactions} which ``activate'' an optically bright unobscured QSO in the gas-poor galaxy, and a starburst in the gas-rich one. We argue that such interactions may have gone largely unnoticed even in the local Universe because the combination of tools necessary to disentagle the progenitors (high resolution and S/N optical {\it and} CO imaging) became available only recently.
We present a study of the dynamical evolution of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), merging galaxies of infrared luminosity >10^12 L_sun. During our Very Large Telescope large program, we have obtained ISAAC near-infrared, high-resolution spectra of 54 ULIRGs (at several merger phases) and 12 local Palomar-Green QSOs to investigate whether ULIRGs go through a QSO phase during their evolution. One possible evolutionary scenario is that after nuclear coalescence, the black hole radiates close to Eddington to produce QSO luminosities. The mean stellar velocity dispersion that we measure fr…
We examine whether the ultraluminous infrared galaxies that contain a type I Seyfert nucleus (a type I ULIRG) are in the transition stage from ULIRGs to quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). To inspect this issue, we compare the black hole (BH) mass, the bulge luminosity and the far infrared luminosity among type I ULIRGs, QSOs and elliptical galaxies. As a result, we find the following results; (1) The type I ULIRGs have systematically smaller BH masses in spite of the comparable bulge luminosity relative to QSOs and elliptical galaxies. (2) The far-infrared luminosity of most type I ULIRGs is larger…
The QSO 3C 48 and its host galaxy constitute a nearby template object of the proposed merger-driven evolutionary sequence from ULIRGs to QSOs. In this contribution multi-wavelength observations and N-body simulations studying the structural and compositional properties of this late-stage major merger will be presented. Key questions addressed will be the nature of the apparent second nucleus 3C 48A and absence of a counter tidal tail. The results will be used to review the role of 3C 48 in the ULIRG-QSO evolutionary scenario.
We present new near-infrared Keck and VLT spectroscopic data on the stellar dynamics in late stage, ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) mergers . We now have information on the structural and kinematic properties of 18 ULIRGs, 8 of which contain QSO-like active galactic nuclei. The host properties (velocity dispersion, effective radius, effective surface brightness, M_K) of AGN-dominated and star formation dominated ULIRGs are similar. ULIRGs fall remarkably close to the fundamental plane of early type galaxies. They populate a wide range of the plane, are on average similar to L*-rotating …
This paper addresses the origin of the far-infrared (FIR) continuum of QSOs, based on the Quasar and ULIRG Evolution Study (QUEST) of nearby QSOs and ULIRGs using observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope. For 27 Palomar-Green QSOs at z <~ 0.3, we derive luminosities of diagnostic lines ([NeII]12.8um, [NeV]14.3um, [OIV]25.9um) and emission features (PAH7.7um emission which is related to star formation), as well as continuum luminosities over a range of mid- to far-infrared wavelengths between 6 and 60um. We detect star-formation related PAH emission in 11/26 QSOs and fine-structure line em…
We report new K-band, radio continuum, and CO (1-0) imaging observations and 850 micron photometric observations of PDS 456, the most luminous QSO in the local universe (z<0.3). The 0.6'' resolution K-band image obtained using the Keck telescope shows three compact K~16.5 (M(K)~ -21) sources at a projected distance of ~10 kpc to the southwest, and the host galaxy of PDS 456 may be interacting or merging with one or more companions. The observations using the OVRO millimeter array has revealed a narrow CO (1-0) line (FWHM = 181 km/s) centered at z=0.1849, and 9 x 10^9 solar mass of molecular ga…
We analyse mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic properties for 19 ultra-luminous infrared quasars (IR QSOs) in the local universe based on the spectra from the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The MIR properties of IR QSOs are compared with those of optically-selected Palomar-Green QSOs (PG QSOs) and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). The average MIR spectral features from ~ 5 to 30um, including the spectral slopes, 6.2um PAH emission strengths and [NeII] 12.81um luminosities of IR QSOs, differ from those of PG QSOs. In contrast, IR QSOs and ULIRGs have comparabl…
We present results from our VLT Large Program to study the dynamical evolution of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). We have so far obtained near-infrared high-resolution ISAAC spectra of 53 local ULIRGs at several merger timescales and 12 Palomar-Green QSOs (more than half of which are IR-bright sources). We have extracted the stellar velocity dispersion and rotational velocity along our slits to derive the kinematics of the merging galaxies. These quantities enable us to answer the following questions about the evolution of ULIRGs: 1) What are the progenitor mass ratios?, 2) How do th…
We report the results from a deep HST NICMOS H-band imaging survey of a carefully selected sample of 33 luminous, late-stage galactic mergers at z < 0.3. Signs of a recent galactic interaction are seen in all of the objects in the HST sample, including all 7 IR-excess Palomar-Green (PG) QSOs in the sample. Unsuspected double nuclei are detected in 5 ULIRGs. A detailed two-dimensional analysis of the surface brightness distributions in these objects indicates that the great majority (81%) of the single-nucleus systems show a prominent early-type morphology. However, low-surface-brightness expon…
D. Reimers and H.-J. Hagen report in A&A 329, L25 (1998) that a QSO of z = .807 is a "by chance projection" on the center of a galaxy of z = .009. A considerable amount of previously published evidence would lead us to expect an active, low redshift galaxy within about one degree of such a quasar. It is shown here that, in fact, there is a bright Seyfert galaxy of z = .008 only 36.9 arcmin distance. Moreover, it turns out that a total of five quasars, plus the dwarf galaxy, are accurately aligned along the minor axis of this Seyfert with the quasars in descending order of redshift, i.e., z = 2…
We present HST WFPC2 V band imaging for 23 Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies taken from the QDOT redshift survey. The fraction of sources observed to be interacting is 87%. Most of the merging systems show a number of compact `knots', whose colour and brightness differ substantially from their immediate surroundings. Colour maps for nine of the objects show a non-uniform colour structure. Features include blue regions located towards the centres of merging systems which are likely to be areas of enhanced star formation, and compact red regions which are likely to be dust shrouded starbursts or A…
Based on the radiation hydrodynamical model for the black hole(BH) growth, incorporated with the chemical evolution of the early-type host galaxy, we construct the coevolution model of a QSO BH and the host galaxy. As a result, it is found that after a galactic wind epoch, the luminosity is shifted from the host-dominant phase to the AGN-dominant phase (QSO phase) in the timescale of a few $10^{8}$ years. The former phase corresponds to the early stage of growing BH, and can be regarded as a ``proto-QSO'' phase. It has observable characteristic properties (detail inthis paper).By comparing these …
New integral field optical fiber spectroscopy obtained with the INTEGRAL system, together with archival {\it {\it HST}} WFPC2 and NICMOS images, have been used to investigate the ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 17208$-$0014, one of the coldest and most luminous objects in the IRAS 1 Jy sample. The 2D gas velocity field identifies the {\it optically faint} K-band nucleus as the {\it true} dynamical nucleus of the galaxy, and shows that the 3 kpc, tilted (i $\sim$ 35 degree) disk is rotating at $Δ$Vsin$i$= 250 km s$^{-1}$. The kinematical, morphological and photometric evidence presented here…
We present first results from our Very Large Telescope large program to study the dynamical evolution of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), which are the products of mergers of gas-rich galaxies. The full data set consists of high resolution, long-slit, H- and K-band spectra of 38 ULIRGs and 12 QSOs (between 0.042<z<0.268). In this paper, we present the sources that have not fully coalesced, and therefore have two distinct nuclei. This sub-sample consists of 21 ULIRGs, the nuclear separation of which varies between 1.6 and 23.3 kpc. From the CO bandheads that appear in our spectra, we e…
Attempts of Magain et al (2005) to detect the host galaxy of the bright QSO HE0450--2958 have not been successful. We suggest that the supermassive black hole powering the QSO was ejected from the observed ULIRG at the same redshift and at 1.5 arcsec distance. Ejection could have either be caused by recoil due to gravitational wave emission from a coalescing binary of supermassive black holes or the gravitational slingshot of three or more supermassive black holes in the ongoing merger of galaxies which triggered the starburst activity in the ULIRG. We discuss implications for the possible hie…
We report on detections of the high-excitation CO J=6-5, J=4-3 lines in Mrk231, a prototypical Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxy (ULIRG) and Seyfert 1 QSO. These observations are combined with CO J=3-2, HCN J=4-3 (this work), and CO J=2-1, J=1-0, 13CO J=2-1, HCN J=1-0 measurements taken from the literature to provide better constraints on the properties of the molecular gas in an extreme starburst/QSO in the local Universe. We find that the CO J=4-3 and J=6-5 transitions trace a different gas phase from that dominating the lower three CO transitions, with n(H_2) ~ (1-3)x10^4 cm-3 and Tk ~ (40-70)…
We performed spectroscopic observations for a large infrared QSO sample with a total of 25 objects. The sample was compiled from the QDOT redshift survey, the 1 Jy ULIRGs survey and a sample obtained by a cross-correlation study of the IRAS Point Source Catalogue with the ROSAT All Sky Survey Catalogue. Statistical analyses of the optical spectra show that the vast majority of infrared QSOs have narrow permitted emission lines (with FWHM of Hbeta less than 4000 km/s) and more than 60% of them are luminous narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies. Two of the infrared QSOs are also classified as low ioniz…
In this paper we report on an XMM-Newton observation of the ultraluminous infrared QSO Mrk 1014. The X-ray observation reveals a power-law dominated (photon index of about 2.2) spectrum with a slight excess in the soft energy range. AGN and starburst emission models fit the soft excess emission equally well, however, the most plausible explanation is an AGN component as the starburst model parameter, temperature and luminosity, appear physically unrealistic. The mean luminosity of Mrk 1014 is about 2 times 10^44 erg s^-1. We have also observed excess emission at energies greater than 5 keV. Th…
A sample of 19 low redshift (0.03$<$z$<$0.07) very luminous infrared galaxy (VLIRG: $10^{11}L_\odot< $ L[8-1000 $μ$m] $ < 10^{12} L_\odot$) systems (30 galaxies) has been imaged in $B$, $V$, and $I$. These objects cover a luminosity range that is key to linking the most luminous infrared galaxies with the population of galaxies at large. We have obtained photometry for all of these VLIRG systems, the individual galaxies (when detached), and their nuclei, and the relative behavior of these classes has been studied in optical color-magnitude diagrams. The photometric properties of the sample are…
We present here the sensitive HCN(1-0) observations made with the VLA of two submillimeter galaxies and two QSOs at high-redshift. HCN emission is the signature of dense molecular gas found in GMC cores, the actual sites of massive star formation. We have made the first detection of HCN in a submillimeter galaxy, SMM J16359+6612. The HCN emission is seen with a signal to noise ratio of 4$σ$ and appears to be resolved as a double-source of $\approxlt 2''$ separation. Our new HCN observations, combined with previous HCN detections and upper limits, show that the FIR/HCN ratios in these high reds…
We report the results of a systematic near-infrared spectroscopic survey using the Subaru, VLT and Keck Telescopes of a sample of high redshift Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) mainly composed of submillimeter-selected galaxies. Our observations span the restframe optical range containing nebular emission lines such as H_beta, [OIII], and [OII], which are essential for making robust diagnostics of the physical properties of these ULIRGs. Using the H_alpha/H_beta emission line ratios, we derive internal extinction estimates for these galaxies similar to those of local ULIRGs:A_v~2.9+-0…
(Abridged) We present high spatial resolution ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy, obtained using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope, of nuclear structures within four `warm' Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). We find an AGN in at least three, and probably all four of our sample, hosted in a compact, optically luminous `knot'. In three cases these knots were previously identified as a putative AGN nucleus from multiband optical imaging. Three of the sample also harbor a starburst in one or more knots, suggesting that the optically luminous knot…
We have obtained a moderately long (100 kilosecond) ASCA observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 231, the most luminous of the local ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) population. In the best-fitting model we do not see the X-ray source directly; the spectrum consists of a scattered power-law component and a reflection component, both of which have been absorbed by a column N_H \approx 3 X 10^(22)/cm^2. About 3/4 of the observed hard X-rays arise from the scattered component, reducing the equivalent width of the iron K alpha line. The implied ratio of 1-10 keV X-ray luminosity to bolo…
In this paper we present results from an IRAM Plateau de Bure millimetre-wave Interferometer (PdBI) survey for CO emission towards radio-detected submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) with known optical and near-infrared spectroscopic redshifts. Five sources in the redshift range z~1-3.5 were detected, nearly doubling the number of SMGs detected in CO. We summarise the properties of all 12 CO-detected SMGs, as well as 6 sources not detected in CO by our survey, and use this sample to explore the bulk physical properties of the SMG population as a whole. The median CO line luminosity of the SMGs is <L_…
Using the IRAM 30m telescope, we report the detection of the CO(3--2), CO(4--3), CO(5--4) and CO(6--5) lines in the gravitational lensed submm galaxy SMM J16359+6612 at z=2.5. The CO lines have a double peak profile in all transitions. From a Gaussian decomposition of the spectra we show that the CO line ratios, and therefore the underlying physical conditions of the gas, are similar for the blue and the redshifted component. The CO line Spectral Energy Distribution (SED; i.e. flux density vs. rotational quantum number) turns over already at the CO(5--4) transition which shows that the molecul…
Current mm-interferometers can provide a complete view of the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in the circumnuclear disks of nearby galaxies. High-resolution CO maps are paramount in order to track down the feeding of active nuclei and quantitatively address the issue of how and for how long nuclear activity can be sustained in galaxies. Going beyond CO mapping, the use of more specific molecular tracers of dense gas can probe the feedback influence of activity on the chemistry and energy balance/redistribution in the interstellar medium of nearby galaxies, a prerequisite to interp…
