Anisotropic magnetic and electronic transport measurements were carried out on large single crystals of Fe1-xCoxSb2 (0<= x <=1). The semiconducting state of FeSb2 evolves into metallic and weakly ferromagnetic by substitution of Fe with Co for x<0.5. Further doping induces structural transformation from orthorhombic Pnnm structure of FeSb2 to monoclinic P21/c structure of CoSb2 where semiconducting and diamagnetic ground state is restored again. Large magnetoresistance and anisotropy in electronic transport were observed.
We have investigated anisotropy in magnetic and electrical transport properties of Fe1-xCrxSb2 (0<= x <=1) single crystals. The magnetic ground state of the system evolves from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic with gradual substitution of Fe with Cr. Anisotropy in electrical transport diminishes with increased Cr substitution and fades away by x=0.5. We find that the variable range hopping (VRH) conduction mechanism dominates at low temperatures for 0.4<= x <=0.75.
Due to the complex interplay of magnetic, structural, electronic, and orbital degrees of freedom, biaxial strain is known to play an essential role in the doped manganites. For coherently strained La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) thin films grown on SrTiO(3) substrates, we measured the magnetotransport properties both parallel and perpendicular to the substrate and found an anomaly of the electrical transport properties. Whereas metallic behavior is found within the plane of biaxial strain, for transport perpendicular to this plane an insulating behavior and non-linear current-voltage characteristics (IVC…
We report a study of anisotropy in transport and magnetic properties of K0.64Fe1.44Se2.00 single crystals. The anisotropy in resistivity is up to one order of magnitude between 1.8 K and 300 K. Magnetic susceptibility exhibits weak temperature dependence in the normal state with decrease in temperature with no significant anomalies. The lower critical fields Hc1 of K0.64Fe1.44Se2.00 are only about 3 Oe and the anisotropy of Hc1,c/Hc1,ab is about 1. The critical currents for H||ab and H||c are about 10-10^3 A/cm2, smaller than in iron pnictides and in FeTe_{1-x}Se_{x} and nearly isotropic.
Several recent studies have shown that the anisotropy in the magnetic structure of \ECA\ plays a significant role in stabilizing the Weyl nodes. To investigate the relationship between magnetic anisotropy and Weyl physics, we present a comparative study between EuZn$_2$As$_2$ and EuCd$_2$As$_2$ that are isostructural but with different magnetic anisotropy. We performed structural analysis, electronic transport, and magnetization experiments on millimeter-sized single crystals of EuZn$_2$As$_2$, and compared the results to those of EuCd$_2$As$_2$. By combining the first principle calculations a…
The magnetic and transport properties of La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_{3-δ}$ film grown on a LaAlO$_3$ substrate by pulsed-laser deposition are studied. The properties are found to be influenced by a combined influence of the magnetic anisotropy and inhomogeneity. Magnetoresistance anisotropy is determined by the shape anisotropy and the strain-induced magnetic anisotropy due to the film-substrate lattice interaction. Indications of the temperature-driven spin reorientation transition from an out-of plane orderded state at low temperatures to an in-plane ordered state at high temperatures as a res…
A study of the anisotropy in magnetic, transport and magnetotransport properties of FeSb2 has been made on large single crystals grown from Sb flux. Magnetic susceptibility of FeSb2 shows diamagnetic to paramagnetic crossover around 100K. Electrical transport along two axes is semiconducting whereas the third axis exhibits a metal - semiconductor crossover at temperature Tmin which is sensitive to current alignment and ranges between 40 and 80K. In H=70kOe semiconducting transport is restored for T<300K, resulting in large magnetoresistance [rho(70kOe)-rho(0)]/rho(0)=2200% in the crossover tem…
Thermopower and electrical resistivity measurements transverse to the conducting chains of the quasi-one-dimensional metal Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17) are reported in the temperature range 5 K <= T <= 500 K. For T>= 400 K the interchain transport is determined by thermal excitation of charge carriers from a valence band ~ 0.14 eV below the Fermi level, giving rise to a large, p-type thermopower that coincides with a small, n-type thermopower along the chains. This dichotomy -- semiconductor-like in one direction and metallic in a mutually perpendicular direction -- gives rise to substantial transverse t…
We show the existence of an isolated soliton excitation over the topological ground state configuration in chiral helimagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia exchange and the strong easy-plane anisotropy. The magnetic field perpendicular to the helical axis stabilizes the kink crystal state which plays a role of "topological protectorate" for the traveling soliton with a definite handedness. To find new soliton solution, we use the Bäcklund transformation technique. It is pointed out that the traveling soliton carries the magnon density and a magnetic solition transport may be realized.
The recent experimental discovery of three-dimensional (3D) materials hosting a strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling calls for the theoretical investigation of their transport properties. Here we study the zero temperature dc conductivity of a 3D Rashba metal in the presence of static diluted impurities. We show that, at variance with the two-dimensional case, in 3D systems spin-orbit coupling affects dc charge transport in all density regimes. We find in particular that the effect of spin-orbit interaction strongly depends on the direction of the current, and we show that this yields strongly an…
Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate the metal-insulator transitions induced by the stripe of charge density in an interacting two-dimensional Dirac fermion system. The stripe will introduce the transport anisotropy and insulating intermediate phase into the system, accompanied by the change of band structure and a peak of density of states around Fermi energy. In the case of strong correlation, stripe exhibits competition with Coulomb repulsion through closing the energy gap and disrupting the magnetic order, and finally drives the system in Mott insulating phase b…
The temperature dependent dc resistivity of the quasi-one-dimensional organic salts (TMTTF)2X ( X = PF6, AsF6, SbF6; BF4, ClO4, ReO4) has been measured in all three crystal directions in order to investigate anisotropy, localization effects, charge and anion ordering phenomena at low temperatures. For all compounds and directions we extract the transport mechanisms in different regimes. The data are thoroughly analyzed, related to structural properties, and extensively discussed in view of previous studies and latest theories. It becomes apparent that the anions have a severe influence on the …
A quantum-mechanical description of the magnetic shape anisotropy, that is usually ascribed to the classical magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, has been developed. This is achieved by including the Breit-interaction, that can be seen as an electronic current-current interaction in addition to the conventional Coulomb interaction, within fully relativistic band structure calculations. The major sources of the magnetic anisotropy, spin-orbit coupling and the Breit-interaction, are treated coherently this way. This seems to be especially important for layered systems for which often both sources…
Artificial perovskite-oxide nanostructures possess intriguing magnetic properties due to their tailorable electron-electron interactions, which are extremely sensitive to the oxygen coordination environment. To date, perovskite-oxide nanodots with sizes below 50 nm have rarely been reported. Furthermore, the oxygen octahedral distortion and its relation to magnetic properties in perovskite oxide nanodots remain unexplored yet. Here, we have studied the magnetic anisotropy in patterned SrRuO3 (SRO) nanodots as small as 30 nm while performing atomic-resolution electron microscopy and spectroscop…
High-quality single crystals of LuB12 are grown using the induction zone melting method. The X-ray data are collected at temperatures 293, 135, 95, 50 K. The crystal structure of LuB12 can be refined with record low R-factor in the cubic Fm-3m symmetry group despite reiterated observations of the cubic symmetry distortions both in the unit-cell values and in the physical properties. A peculiar computing strategy is developed to resolve this contradiction. True symmetry of the electron-density distribution in LuB12 is proved to be much lower than cubic as a result, which correlates very accurat…
The transport properties of a large-spin molecule strongly coupled to ferromagnetic leads in the presence of transverse magnetic anisotropy are studied theoretically. The relevant spectral functions, linear-response conductance and the tunnel magnetoresistance are calculated by means of the numerical renormalization group method. We study the dependence of transport characteristics on orbital level position, uniaxial and transverse anisotropies, external magnetic field and temperature. It is shown that while uniaxial magnetic anisotropy leads to the suppression of the Kondo effect, finite tran…
The undoped three-orbital spin fermion model for the Fe-based superconductors is studied via Monte Carlo techniques in two-dimensional clusters. At low temperatures, the magnetic and one-particle spectral properties are in good agreement with neutron and photoemission experiments. Our most important results are the resistance vs. temperature curves that display all the features experimentally observed in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ detwinned single crystals (under uniaxial stress), including a low-temperature anisotropy between the two directions followed by a peak at the magnetic ordering temperature, her…
A quantitative mathematical model for the critical thickness of strained epitaxial metal films is presented, at which the magnetic moment experiences a reorientation from in-plane to perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The model is based on the minimum of the magnetic anisotropy energy with respect to the orientation of the magnetic moment of the film. Magnetic anisotropy energies are taken as the sum of shape anisotropy, magnetocrystalline anisotropy and magnetoelastic anisotropy, the two latter ones being present as constant surface and variable volume contributions. Other than anisotropy mat…
Direction-dependent anisotropic exchange is a common feature of magnetic systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we study the effect of such exchange upon macroscopic magnetic anisotropy for a face-centered-cubic model. By several theoretical techniques, we show that, both in the paramagnetic and ordered phases, the magnetic anisotropy is induced by fluctuations. Moreover, the magnetic anisotropy differs in the paramagnetic and ordered phases: in the paramagnetic phase the susceptibility is maximum along the $\langle111\rangle$ directions, while the magnetic moments orient along $\langle…
Anisotropy effects can significantly control or modify the ground-state properties of magnetic systems. Yet the origin and the relative importance of the possible anisotropy terms is difficult to assess experimentally and often ambiguous. Here we propose a technique which allows a very direct distinction between single-ion and two-ion anisotropy effects. The method is based on high-resolution neutron spectroscopic investigations of magnetic cluster excitations. This is exemplified for manganese dimers and tetramers in the mixed compounds CsMnxMg1-xBr3 (0.05\leqx\leq0.40). Our experiments provi…
We have studied the magnetic torque in uranium monosulfide (US) single crystals to explore the magnetic anisotropy in this material. Uranium monosulfide crystallizes in cubic, NaCl-type of crystal structure and exhibits the largest magneto-crystalline anisotropy observed in cubic systems. By performing detailed torque measurements we observe a strongly anisotropic behavior in the paramagnetic phase due to crystal defects and quadrupolar pair interactions. Our studies also confirm the presence of a large anisotropy in the ferromagnetic state of the US system with the <100>, <111>, and <110> dir…
Motivated by the recent measurements of Kondo resistivity in thin films and wires, where the Kondo amplitude is suppressed for thinner samples, the surface anisotropy for magnetic impurities is studied. That anisotropy is developed in those cases where in addition to the exchange interaction with the impurity there is strong spin-orbit interaction for conduction electrons around the impurity in the ballistic region. The asymmetry in the neighborhood of the magnetic impurity exhibits the anisotropy axis $n$ which, in the case of a plane surface, is perpendicular to the surface. The anisotropy e…
We discuss the spiral spin density wave model and its application to explain properties of underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. We argue that the spiral picture is theoretically well justified in the context of the extended $t-J$ model, and then show that it can explain a number of observed features, such as the location and symmetry of the incommensurate peaks in elastic neutron scattering, as well as the in-plane resistivity anisotropy. A consistent description of the low doping region (below 10% or so) emerges from the spiral formulation, in which the holes show no tendency towards any type …
The origin of the electronic nematicity and its remarkable material-dependence are famous longstanding unsolved issues in Fe-based superconductors. To attack these issues, we focus on the in-plane anisotropy of the resistivity: In the nematic state in FeSe, the relation $ρ_x>ρ_y$ holds, where $ρ_{x(y)}$ is the resistivity along the longer (shorter) Fe-Fe axis. In contrast, the opposite anisotropy $ρ_x<ρ_y$ is realized in other undoped Fe-based superconductors. Such nontrivial material dependence is naturally explained in terms of the strongly orbital-dependent inelastic quasiparticle scatterin…
Since the nature of pairing interactions is manifested in the superconducting gap symmetry, the exact gap structure, particularly any deviation from the simple d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry, would help elucidating the pairing mechanism in high-T_c cuprates. Anisotropic heat transport measurement in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} (Bi-2212) reveals that the quasiparticle populations are different for the two nodal directions and thus the gap structure must be uniquely anisotropic, suggesting that pairing is governed by interactions with a rather complicated anisotropy. Intriguingly, it is found that the "pl…
We study low temperature properties in the metallic magnets, considering the itinerant electron mediated ferromagnetism. Applying the Monte Carlo simulations to the extended double exchange model, we discuss reorientation phase transition and anisotropy field for the metallic magnets.
In the Kondo effect, a localized magnetic moment is screened by forming a correlated electron system with the surrounding conduction electrons of a non-magnetic host. Spin S=1/2 Kondo systems have been investigated extensively in theory and experiments, but magnetic atoms often have a larger spin. Larger spins are subject to the influence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy, which describes the dependence of the magnetic moment's energy on the orientation of the spin relative to its surrounding atomic environment. Here we demonstrate the decisive role of magnetic anisotropy in the physics of Kond…
Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) of BaCu2Si2O7 and a microscopic theory of the magnetic anisotropy of spin 1/2 chain compounds with folded CuO3 geometry being in good agreement with the available data are presented. The AFMR studies at 4.2 K show the existence of two gaps (40 and 76 GHz) at zero magnetic field and of two spin re-orientation transitions for H||c. The microscopic origin of the two gaps is shown to be Hund's rule coupling which leads to a "residual anisotropy" beyond the compensation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term by the symmetric anisotropy which would be valid without Hund…
Both the in-plane and the out-of-plane resistivities (ρ_{ab} and ρ_{c}) are measured in high-quality La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (LSCO) single crystals in the lightly- to moderately-doped region, x = 0.01 to 0.10, and the resistivity anisotropy is determined. In all the samples studied, the anisotropy ratio ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} quickly increases with decreasing temperature, although in non-superconducting samples the strong localization effect causes ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} to decrease at low temperatures. Most notably, it is found that ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} at moderate temperatures (100 - 300 K) is almost completely independe…
We analyse the combined effect of orbital and Pauli depairing on the superconducting state, and apply the results to the heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$. We find that: a) standard extrapolation based on the slope of $H_{c2}(T)$ in the vicinity of the transition temperature to T=0 does not always give accurate values of the orbital upper critical field; b) critical value of the Maki parameter, $α$, that determines onset of the first order transition depends on the Fermi surface shape and the symmetry of the gap, and is $α^*\approx 3$ for CeCoIn$_5$; c) the anisotropy of the thermodynamic and transport…
We investigated the in-plane anisotropy on the resistivity and thermopower of the Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} (Bi-2212) and Bi-Sr-Co-O (BiCo) single crystals. In Bi-2212, the b-axis resistivity is higher than the a-axis resistivity, and is expressed as a sum of the a-axis resistivity and an additional residual resistivity. A downward deviation due to pseudogap is observed below a characteristic temperature T^*, which is isotropic in the form of conductivity. These results suggest that the modulation structure along the b-axis works as an anisotropic scattering center, but does not affect the pseudog…
